MARTIN COUNTY — Two state senators and two state representatives, dozens of constituents, along with plenty of issues, all gathered in the same room earlier this week. On Monday, Dec. 8, state senators Denise Grimsley and Joe Negron, along with state representatives Gayle Harrell and MaryLynn “ML” Magar, held a legislative-delegation meeting at the Stuart City Hall. They’re preparing for the 2015 session of the Florida Legislature, which will be from March to May. Laurie Gaylord, superintendent of the Martin County School District, had a lot of requests of the local legislative delegation. Among them was more time to get everyone up to speed on the Florida Assessment Standards
before making more rules. “One of our priorities, we ask for no new mandates,” she told the county’s legislative delegation. Gaylord said that school districts have had about 30 changes in assessment standards in the last three years — enough to make a lot of uncertainties that need to get ironed out. Gone are the days of parents and students hating the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, FCAT. Now student performance is getting measured by the Florida Assessment Standards and end-ofcourse exams for every class. The only remnant of FCAT 2.0 left is the fifth- and eighthgrade science portions, and a handful of older students who need to retest in order to graduate high school. Students these days will be taking the Florida

That’ll be at 4:30 p.m. The center will have a second menorah kindling at Kiwanis Park, Southeast Colorado Avenue and East 5th Street, Stuart. That’ll be on Sunday, Dec. 21, at 3 p.m. “Those are community events in the public domain,” Rabbi Shlomo Uminer, said. “They’re for the community, for anyone who wants to come and join us.” The Festival of Lights is an eight-day celebration commemorating the rededication of

LEGISLATORS from page 1 Standards Assessment for English language arts, grades 3 to 11, and math, grades 3 to 8. Florida Standards Assessment is based upon the controversial Common Core Standards. Supporters of the changes say rote knowledge simply won’t cut it like before. They say the Florida Assessment Standards emphasize proving research and problem-solving skills. That means a lot of multiple-choice testing is going by the wayside and narrated answers are taking its place. Gaylord said several things were left out of consideration when recent changes were implemented. For example, she said there are no end-of-course test standards to speak of. She said Martin’s students could end up taking much more rigorous end-of-course exams than those in, say, Orange County, and that could affect what colleges and universities some can get into. “There’s not a continuity among the districts,” she said. In an interview before the meeting, Negron — whose wife is a member of the Martin County School Board — said he’d like to see education reform during the 2015 session. “I heard during the campaign, knocking on doors, parents support testing, but there’s a delicate balance of how much testing we should do,” he said. Negron added, “I think there’ll be a top-to-bottom look at how we do our (student-progress) measuring.” At the meeting, Gaylord also asked the delegation to eliminate the tuition costs districts pay for dual-enrollment students. Martin

students in dual enrollment attend one to a semester full of classes at Indian River State College. The issue for districts is that since they cannot know how many students are going to qualify for and take advantage of dual enrollment each year, it’s impossible for them to budget for it. “We fully support dual enrollment, but the cost of that has been very high for public school districts,” Gaylord said. Among the cost generators, Gaylord said, are textbooks. She asked the delegation to support requirements that colleges and universities keep textbooks for dual-enrollment students for at least three years. College textbooks are generally much more expensive than high-school textbooks, and change more frequently. Additionally, the superintendent asked the local legislators to support repealing a 2006 law that prohibits districts from opening school more than two weeks before Labor Day. The 2004 hurricane season originally prompted the law. That year four hurricanes struck Florida — Charlie, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne — from mid-August to late September. The Florida Legislature enacted the school-opening rule in hopes of reducing the number of days students are disrupted by hurricanes. In 2004, many districts had opened in early August. Gaylord said that local school districts are best suited to understand the needs of their students. “Allow local flexibility to determine the opening date of schools,” she said. There have been numerous unsuccessful attempts to repeal the law since 2007.

EVENTS from page 3 the second temple in Jerusalem after the Maccabean Revolt, in the second century B.C.E. Uminer said that a courageous by motley crew of devote Jews rose up against Antiochus IV Epiphanes, who’d erected a statue of Zeus in the temple and prohibited the practice of Judaism. After the revolt, Jews wished to rededicate their temple, but needed undefiled, pure olive oil for the menorah. They had a single flask, which was enough for about a day. It would take eight to get more. “The oil for the one day lasted for the full eight days,” Uminer said. Hence the kindling of candles for eight days to commemorate a miracle. “The celebration is more than about the victory against the Greeks,” Uminer said. “It’s good over bad and freedom of religion.” Hanukkah is anything but a stuffy, dry affair. This year, the menorah will be made of golf clubs. “Because we’re in Florida and we wanted to add a taste of contemporariness,” Uminer said. “It’s Florida flavor.” Uminer said that the menorah kindlings will include kids Hanukkah crafts, face painting, food, drinks and, at the second one, the Amazing Xtreme Team,
an acrobatic basketball demonstration team. The center is at 2809 S.W. Sunset Trail, Palm City. It’s on the web at www.chabadmsl.com. New Beginnings Community Church, 8163 S.W. Citrus Blvd., is inviting people home for Christmas on Saturday, Dec. 13. “We have what we call Home for Christmas,” Pastor John Bartz, said. “It’s a fun evening where we do some Christmas songs.” He said attendees get a “living room atmosphere,” and chances to share Christmas memories. “Then we do a soup and dessert dinner,” he said. That starts at 6 p.m. On Sunday, Dec. 14, at 10 a.m., the Clubhouse Children’s Ministry has a holiday program. “The kids are going to be sharing the Christmas story with a play they do,” the minister said. And there’ll be a Christmas Eve candlelight service at 6 p.m. The church is on the web at www. nbccpalmcity.com.
The Episcopal Church of the Advent will have its candlelight Christmas Eve service at 7 p.m. with a music special. “We have family pictures taken as folks arrive,” Beth Shires, ministries coordinator, said. “They just let us know if they like it emailed or hard copy, and we give them a complimentary copy.” The church will have a Christmas service at 10 a.m. It’s at 4484 SW Citrus Blvd., Palm City. Its website is www.adventpalmcity.org. Pastor Larry Sarver, said Calvary Chapel of Palm City, 1633 S.W. 34th St., will have a candlelight Christmas Eve service from 6 to 7 p.m. with traditional carols, a children’s presentation and an “encouraging biblical message.” He said the service is made for people busy with last-minute holiday preparations and family. “Most of the people dress casual,” he said. In addition to a live cast with more than 60 actors, “The Grand Miracle” will also have animals, music and narration. Merritt said that the senior pastor, Gary Durham, and he had seen similar productions and wanted New Hope to take the idea and build on it. “We passed it around until someone caught the vision, and that was Rebecca Negron,” he said. Negron has a slightly different recollection. “It bounced around a few people who liked the idea, but didn’t want to be in charge,” she said. Some of that reluctance likely had to do with the size of the commitment. Negron said volunteers start work for the annual presentation in March. Additionally, whoever took on being the producer had to be artistic and organized with a lot of people skills. Negron said she knew nothing about putting on a church play, especially one of this magnitude, but knew a bunch about big jobs. Her husband, State Senator Joe Negron, has been running for state offices s ince 1999. “I sew and do crafty things,” she said. “Early on, I did a lot of work on Joe’s campaigns, which is working with a lot of people.” In 2012, Rebecca ran for and won a seat on the Martin County School Board. But, back to “The

impossible to figure out how many volunteer hours go into the production. Both said it involves innumerable people doing everything from sewing costumes at home to building sets at the church. Then there are the actors. Negron said “The Grand Miracle” has two shifts of actors, and many filling roles in each shift. Negron said one of the big reasons for that is authenticity. “We split up the shifts for people with babies,” she said. “People don’t want to drive by in cars and see baby dolls.” They’re more certain about how many visitors will likely go. “I know the last couple years, we averaged 3.5 people per car, and last year we had upwards to 600 and some cars,” Merritt said. Making “The Grand Miracle” one of the largest annual events in Palm City, possibly eclipsed only the Palm City Chamber of Commerce’s Palm City Fall Festival and Car Show. Merritt said there’s always a spike in attendance at New Hope after the annual production. He said New Hope is careful to make sure visitors know they’re welcome to head to services, too, but not at the expense of other churches. “From the very beginning, the vision we cast for this was we wanted something for the Palm City community that we could
tion, Merritt said. The manger, he said, isn’t the grand finally of “The Grand Miracle.” “It doesn’t stop with the manger scene and the Baby Jesus,” Merritt said. Among other things, visitors will be treated to a glimpse at the eighth day of Jesus’ life. Merritt said it’s very important for numerous reasons. They’ll also get to see when the unknown number of Magi actually arrived — likely from Persia — with their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. It wasn’t when Jesus was born, according to the Bible, no matter how many nativity sets say otherwise. “The last thing is a scene of the tomb after the resurrection of Christ,” Merritt said. “From a Christian perspective, it’s a story of the life of Christ, not just the birth.” After that, visitors will have a chance to park their cars and enter the indoor, walk-through Galilean village with live performances, period food, handcrafted items, historical demonstrations, a petting zoo, and the most popular annual feature. “I’m amazed every year how people are willing to stand in a long line to have a family picture with a baby goat,” Merritt said. Negron and Merritt said it’s

TREASURE COAST — Brooke Thabit’s daily routine is drastically different than it was two years ago after becoming paralyzed, but she still finds ways to stay active. While she was spending time with some friends on a dock on Labor Day 2012, Brooke dove into the water. She was unable to judge how deep the cloudy water was, though. The water was just knee-high, and she broke her neck, leaving her instantly paralyzed. Before the tragedy, the 19-yearold former Stuart resident was always active. After school, she said she’d normally spend her free time doing cross-fit training

or practicing surfing. “I was a sponsored surfer, so I was surfing all the time,” Brooke said. Martin County-based Ohana Surf Shop owner Jordan Schwartz sponsored her soon after meeting her when she stopped in the store, he said. “She was really funny and sweet, and that’s a big reason why we wanted her on the team. She was probably one of the top two surfers in the area, but her personality is really what did it for us,” Schwartz said. She then worked for the store for about two years until the accident. The team hasn’t left her side, helping with several fundraisers, including “Bad Haircuts for Brooke” and the “Bulls for

As a Top Ten National Finalist for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, IRSC is one of 15 outstanding colleges in the Aspen 2020 Completion Collective who attended the White House event. “Indian River State College has always made student success the top priority and we are very excited about participating in the White House summit to help more students graduate from college,” Massey said. “This national initiative spotlights programs around the country that will play an important part in restoring the U.S. as the world’s top producer of college graduates.” Participants were asked to commit to new action in one of four areas: building networks of colleges around promoting completion, creating K-16 partnerships around college readiness, investing in high school counselors as part of the First Lady’s Reach Higher initiative, and increasing the number of college graduates in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The president announced new steps on how his administration is helping to support these actions, including announcing $10 million to help promote college completion and a $30 million AmeriCorps program that will

The event is the second College Opportunity Day of Action, and will include a progress report on the commitments made at the first day of action on Jan. 14, 2014. Expanding opportunity for more students to enroll and succeed in college, especially low-income and underrepresented students, is vital to building a strong economy and a strong middle class. Today, only 9 percent of those born in the lowest family income quartile attain a bachelor’s degree by age 25, compared to 54 percent in the top quartile. In an effort to expand college access, the Obama Administration has increased Pell scholarships by $1,000 a year, created the new American Opportunity Tax Credit worth up to $10,000 over four years of college, limited student loan payments to 10 percent of income, and laid out an ambitious agenda to reduce college costs and promote innovation and competition.

TREASURE COAST — The Highwaymen are a local staple; a famous group of mostly selftaught African-American artists who began painting and selling directly to the public amid a horrid time for blacks in the Florida ‘50s. They painted landscapes Floridians are accustomed to seeing — striking sunrises and soothing sunsets with different types of trees scattered in the foreground and rippled rivers and motionless marshes with those same skylines reflecting off the clear water — the kinds of sights people plan vacations around to see, if only for a short time. Vienna Trading Antique Mall will be having its fourth annual Florida Highwaymen Art Show and Sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in Fort Pierce for those interested in viewing or owning Highwaymen paintings. More than 350 paintings will be available, along with free food and drinks and a raffle for a free Highwaymen painting. At their Highwaymen shows, the antique mall’s co-owner, Elizabeth Mendez, said three or four Highwaymen typically attend, although she’s not sure who will show up just yet to share their history. “We fell in love with the story of the Highwaymen,” Elizabeth said. “It’s amazing, and the paintings tell you it’s Florida

YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS • PALM CITY & TESORO • DECEMBER 12, 2014 • 19 Since suffering her spinal cord injury more than two years ago, Brooke Thabit’s condition has improved. She can use her arms more extensively and needs less assistance at rehabilitation. There will be a ‘Benefit for Brooke’ wine tasting and raffle event from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 12 at the Bottle Shock along Northwest St. Lucie West Boulevard for people to donate toward her recovery.

BENEFIT from page 10 Brooke” fishing tournament, to help fund her recovery. Schwartz said he tells others to help Brooke because that’s what she would do for them. “She did. She was a huge part of our Surfers for Autism team, and she helped with our Special Olympics surfing team. She always did those things, no questions asked,” Schwartz said. Brooke’s mother, Alison Thabit, said, although her daughter is progressing, it’s been a long road toward recovery, and the family could use some more help. For some time, Brooke was labeled as a C6 quadriplegic, unable to use her arms or legs and needing four rehabilitation specialists to help her stand, her mom said. Today, Brooke can stand with just one specialist’s help. She can also engage some muscles and walk on a treadmill with some assistance from a machine that helps her move her legs. “It’s one of my favorite parts of my day. Before my accident, I was really active, and it was always really important to me,” Brooke said. The family now lives in Boca Raton, and rehabilitation sessions and medical equipment cost quite a bit, Alison said. She listed just a fraction of what she and her husband bought: a frame to help Brooke stand for $8,000, stem cell harvesting to help Brooke make new pathways from her brain to her muscles for $12,000 and $400 a day for rehab, which she goes to about four days a week. She needs more help, though. The bills are adding up, and the
funds are running out. “Doctors believe they can make a difference in her life … We need to keep her in rehab because we believe a cure is on the horizon, and we need her to be healthy for when it comes,” Alison said. There will be a “Benefit for Brooke” wine tasting and raffle event from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 12 at the Bottle Shock along Northwest St. Lucie West Boulevard. Tickets are $5, and attendees can sample more than 20 wines. Alison said she’d like to get Brooke an addition to her wheelchair that would make it into a power chair. That runs about $3,500. The money would also help cover hyperbaric chamber treatments Brooke used to go to that helped relieve swelling in her spine. Despite her obstacles, Brooke graduated from Jensen Beach High School on time in 2012, and is an inspiration for many. Red Bull took notice, and she was selected as an ambassador for its Wings for Life World Run program that helps fund spinal cord injury research. She raises awareness by attending Wings for Life events and has told her story on Red Bull’s YouTube channel, getting nearly 60,000 views. She also went sky-diving with Wings for Life on Nov. 4 to show others that this injury isn’t going to hold her back. She now attends Palm Beach State College classes online, but hopes to get to a point where she can attend college in a classroom. She’s not sure what field she wants to go into, but she wants to be physically active in whatever she does. “I just don’t want to sit behind a desk all day,” Brooke said.

Travelers who carry firearms on a regular basis know full well the variant nature of this situation. A routine traffic stop for a speeding violation could turn into a nightmare journey through the criminal justice system if the traveler isn’t aware of the proper way to carry or transport his firearms in a vehicle. Attorney J. Scott Kappas uses case law and statutory authority to render plain English advice as to how a traveler should carry firearms while visiting the many states of our country.

HIGHWAYMEN from page 14 paint something for a whole day and sell it for $25, instead of going to the orange groves.” The artists would sell their pieces roadside, often while the paint was still wet. While they sometimes sold enough work to sustain themselves, their work didn’t catch on in the mainstream until the mid-‘90s. “A lot of people bought the paintings because they felt bad for them and didn’t care for the art,” Elizabeth said.
Since then, their work has caught quite a following, and each of the artists were inducted into the Florida Artist Hall of Fame in 2004. Many paintings by Harold Newton, Alfred Hair and James Gibson fetch upwards of $3,000, though many by others can be had for a more modest price. Mendez said many of the paintings will be listed for a few hundred dollars at the show. “It’s a good investment. People can enjoy their painting for a while and cash in on it later.”

“My dad had Alzheimer’s disease for years, and Vivian and I took care of him in our home. A friend told me how Treasure Coast Hospice can help. They provided Dad’s medications, a wheelchair, a shower chair and oxygen. The RN and hospice aide showed us their love and patience as they helped us give Dad all the care he needed. We suggest calling Treasure Coast Hospice as early as possible.”

Applying to college an art in itself Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
PALM CITY — Katie Rodgers is outnumbered. The Pine School senior has four brothers, three of them older than she. They are a sports-minded family; dad Mark Rodgers is a sports agent who represents Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. Katie broke the mold. “I went into ballet and started at StarStruck (Performing Arts Center) in third grade,” she said. “My family would come to my shows. I introduced the arts to my family.” Now, Katie Rodgers is applying to college. The programs that feature degrees in performing arts have as rigorous an application regimen as they do a curriculum. In an occasional series, we’ll follow Katie Rodgers as she navigates the road to her dream, acceptance into an elite performing arts program. In addition to being an honor student, Katie still studies at StarStruck, taking voice and piano lessons with Peter Jones and acting lessons with Jennifer Jones. She is starring in the StarStruck production of “Hello, Dolly” this weekend. She also studies modern and contemporary dance, jazz, tap and ballet. All of this is to prepare her for doing what she loves. “I love performing,” she said. “I loved how I could be myself or whoever I wanted to be. People (at StarStruck) were just like me. I fell in love with the creative atmosphere and performing and being on stage. I love becoming

another character.” When Katie was in ninth grade, her dad and mom, Karen Rodgers, took her to New York City at Christmas time. “I fell in love,” she said. “We went to see Sutton Foster in ‘Anything Goes,’ and from the moment of the first chord, I was in awe. It was, ‘My gosh, I want to do this. I can do this. After that, I took it seriously. I had this drive.” It was seeing “Cinderella,” that was her ‘aha’ moment. “It was so magical,” she said. “That was the moment I knew I could do what they were doing.” It’s not quite that easy. To keep up with her schedule, Katie says she must keep focused and disciplined, characteristics she says she developed in her theater work. “I go to school from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.,” she said. “I’m in AP and Honors classes. I want to get an education and keep open as many doors as possible. The Pine School is so supportive. They understand and you can Skype with teachers. They have small classes. I love learning. Learning history and English supplements my performances.” After school, Katie goes home and does her homework. “I try to make the schedule with one free night a week to catch up at StarStruck,” she said. “All the cares and tests and drama of life melt away. I’m with people I love. It’s my second home. Friday nights are rehearsals and that’s my social time. My friends are there and they have the same passion. It’s a good

Local actor in ‘Fiddler’ at Maltz
When the persecution of Jews became intolerable, they left in a wagon with all their possessions. Years later, when the musical “Fiddler on the Roof” came to Broadway, my mother and aunt wanted to take my grandmother. She refused for a time, saying, ‘I lived it.” She later saw the musical and fell in love with it, as so many others did. The beloved story of Tevye and his daughters in the town of Anatevka is at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre through Dec. 21. This production is directed by Marcia Milgrom Dodge, nominated for a Tony for her revival of “Ragtime.” Tevye is played by Rob Petkoff, who recently appeared on Broadway in “Anything Goes. The cast has a local performer, as well. Jay Garcia, a graduate of Port St. Lucie High School, still has family in St. Lucie West. His father has owned Jay’s Fine Jewelry for 20 years. The younger Garcia, who lives in New York, makes his Maltz Jupiter debut as the Rabbi in ‘Fiddler.’ Garcia has toured in national and New York productions of “West Side Story,” “Legally Blonde,” “Avenue Q (in Las Vegas,) and “Altar Boyz.”
The character he plays, the Rabbi, is a much older man. Garcia did not specifically audition for that part. “When I auditioned, the director told me about an actor in the 1960s, Arte Johnson, who played older character roles. She told me to Google him.” The fact that the director would tell him that at the audition gave him confidence that he might well be cast in the show. The job then was to make him resemble a much older man. Prosthetics were the first step. “I grew a beard, but they still thought I looked too young,” he said. “The wig guy designed and built a wig that looks amazing. When I look in the mirror at myShelley Koppel self, it’s a little surreal.” Staff writer Garcia noted that the show, in Garcia spoke recently about what which he is appearing for the first it means to perform before a time, has a wonderful score, with hometown crowd. songs that people connect with. “For me, it’s truly a blessing to “There’s ‘If I Were a Rich Man,’ come back home at the holidays, ‘Tradition,’ and ‘Sunrise, Sunfor Thanksgiving and Christmas,” set’,” he said. “My personal he said. “They’re able to see the favorite, since I love ballads, is show with a 45-minute drive. Be‘Little Bird,” sung to the daughter ing away from the city in Florida who is moving outside the Jewish is not too bad this time of year.” community. It’s such a great show. “It feels like family.” It makes so much sense.”

Garcia had a thrill the night before the show opened, when friends and family came to see it. Patrick Madden, drama director at Port St. Lucie High School, came to see his former student. “It was nice to see him,” Garcia said. “It was cool.” The Maltz Jupiter Theatre, located at 1001 E. Indiantown Road, presents “Fiddler on the Roof” through Dec. 21. Tickets are $54-$83. For additional information, visit the website, www.jupitertheatre.org or call (561) 575-2223.

balance. My family is my rock. They’re so supportive. This year I discovered I love writing and painting and music. It keeps me balanced.” Katie has had the advantage of watching other students, including older brother Andrew, a student in theater at Indiana University, go through the process of applying to schools. She completed her applications and essays this past summer because she knew that she had to leave time for auditions. For some of the schools, the student has to be accepted before the audition can even take place. Katie would like to find a school where she can study singing, acting, dancing and general education. She wants to meet students in other disciplines and plans to minor in business so she can understand the business of her own career. She is considering 17 schools, including Carnegie-Mellon, the University of Michigan, Penn State, Florida State, New York University, Pace University, Ithaca College, Syracuse University, the University of Miami, American University and the Hartt School. She recently added Vassar to the list because of her love of writing. “I might major in creative writing and theater,” Katie said. “It’s
what Meryl Streep did.” For the audition process, many schools have joined together in a process called Unifieds, where representatives from many schools come to hear students. There are four locations: New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. “Instead of traveling to all the schools, you can knock off certain schools,” Katie said. “I’m choosing to travel to Michigan and Carnegie-Mellon. They’re the most competitive. The Chicago Unifieds are Feb. 2-4. NYU and Pace are in New York and Ithaca and Syracuse go to New York (for auditions.) Recently, Katie went to the University of Miami to see the program there. “I didn’t expect to love it so much,” she said. “It’s laid back. Everyone was so nice. I was nervous. I thought, ‘This is happening.’ It was a great feeling. I realized that I was so prepared that I didn’t have to be as nervous. There was a Q-and-A for the whole group to ask about the program. They nurture their kids and mentor you. I’d be happy to go to Miami, but I want to go north. If I only get in there, I’ll be happy there.” Many of the highly selective schools Katie has chosen prescreen students because their programs are so competitive. She
www.YourVoiceWeekly.com submitted videotapes of a monologue, song and dance to those schools and has gotten call backs from, Penn State, Michigan, Florida State, and Pace. She has not yet heard from several others. She will travel to Carnegie-Mellon Jan. 17, NYU Jan. 23 and cover Pace and Syracuse the same weekend as the NYU audition. She will miss a week of school to cover FSU and the University of Michigan and will fill in the weeks with the other schools. “I’m not going to make a decision based on the name,” she said “I want to see how I work with people and if they like me and I like them.” If she had to pick a dream school, it would be the University of Michigan. “It has the balance of 75 percent singing, acting and dancing and 25 percent general education, writing and business. It’s a small program, and there’s football. It’s a small family in a big university.” Arduous as the process is, Katie Rodgers is having a ball. “It’s what I love and what I want to do for the rest of my life,” she said. “This is what I love. I’m so excited. It’s applying to college twice. You have to get in first and then audition. I love auditions. They excite me. It’s what I’ve always dreamed. It’s one step closer to my dream.”

Chamber Kicks off the Holiday Season in Style with 19th Annual Holiday Trade Show! The start of the holidays began with the Annual Holiday Trade Show and after hours, as more than 350 chamber members, vendors and friends enjoyed the beautiful Kane Center as its backdrop, on the evening of November 12th. The night was spent admiring art work, tasting locally made chocolates, chatting over cheer, power mingling, dining on delicious gourmet foods
provided by our local chefs and picking up early shopping ideas from over 40 unique vendors. The Annual Holiday Trade Show was made possible by our major sponsors; The Kane Center, Bluewater Editions, Southeastern Printing, Villar Plastic Surgery, Kim Melzer: RV Johnson Insurance, Cove Gardens, Silver Platter Catering, Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers
and Your Voice. A special thank you to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office and the helpful Transportation Deputy that kept all our guests safe.
