During the first day of competition, the Junior Pee Wee cheer team earned an impressive fourth-place in the division, while to the Level 3 Junior Midget team finished as the national runner-up. County Commissioners set to take over the CRA MARTIN COUNTY – Weeks after new council members were sworn into office, the Martin County Board of County Commissioners are on the verge of disbanding the Community Redevelopment Agency. As part of the agenda for the regular Board of County Commissioners meeting on Dec. 18, a public hearing is set that will consider an amendment to Chapter 39 of the General Ordinances of Martin County, establishing the Board of County Commissioners as the Community Redevelopment Agency. With the public hearing set, all future Neighborhood Advisory Committee meetings have been suspended indefinitely. The current CRA has been in existence since 2010. The CRA is an independent seven-member board, where the members represent each of the Martin County’s redevelopment districts (Old Palm City, Golden Gate, Hobe Sound, Indiantown, Jensen Beach, Port Salerno and Rio) that work or reside in. As members of their respective communities, they gather to construct ways to revitalize their area based on a budget approved by the commission. The CRA members are not paid for their efforts. However, from the outset in power, the board and its two new commissioners have made it clear that they want back control that they

The county commission and CRA have a philosophical difference over who should lead the revitalization of these communities. As members of office voted in by the people of Martin County, the commission feels it’s ultimately its responsibility planning projects in the community. The members of the CRA are appointed, not elected. “We can look at the CRA and the projects in the community in a very neutral way to do what’s best in favor for the taxpayers,” new District 5 commissioner John Haddox said. “I am confident that we would be able to handle business.” “My outlook is to take a slow, patient, deliberate look at the CRA in conjunction with the larger picture of economic development in the county.” The current CRA has several concerns with the BCC takeover, namely questions over the possible future decisions made on the basis of political gain, the affects that a swift transition may have on existing projects, knowl-

edge of their communities and the amount of attention that will be placed on the redevelopment project. “My deep concern is that the commissioners will not give (the communities) the attention and time that it needs,” Old Palm City CRA representative Stacy Ranieri said. “The commissioners have a lot on their plate.” With the CRA garnering little criticism, Ranieri is confused over the push for change. “I don’t really know what their real agenda is because no one complained directly,” Ranieri said. “I have not had anyone complain to me in the almost three years I have served on this board.” “I’ve only heard positive things about the job that we’ve done.” Even with the philosophical differences, Community Development director Kevin Freeman said either direction would work. “I think we can be successful either way,” Freeman said. “People say to me that I don’t look too concerned about one way or another. That’s because I’m not.” “I’m more concerned about the economy of the county then I am of how the CRA is working. We can work either way.” The public hearing will be held during the regular Board of County Commissioners meeting at 9 a.m. on Dec. 18. The hearing will be held in the Commission Chambers at the Martin County Administrative Center in Stuart.

Martin Downs Golf Club’s comeback swing Six weeks into ownership, investment group works toward revitalizing the struggling golf club

PALM CITY – When Brian Wenrick began explaining his plan to reinvigorate what was previously known as Martin Downs Country Club, he couldn’t help but channel the film, “Field of Dreams.” “If we build it, they will come,” Wenrick said when describing his two-phase plan to draw members to what he hopes will become one of the pre-eminent golf destina-

tions in the area. After nearly five years of ownership, the Polo North Country Club completed a deal on Oct. 25th to sell land to Wenrick and his Greenwood Investment Group LLC. The property deal included ownership of the two golf courses at what is now being named the Martin Downs Golf Club. “The investment group was formed for the purchase of Martin Downs Golf Club and to invest in other businesses in the Martin

County area,” said Wenrick, the primary stockholder of the Greenwood Investment Group. While under ownership of the Polo North Country Club, the Crane Creek Golf Course closed in 2010. Wellington developer Glenn Straub, owner and president of the Polo North Country Club, could not be reached for comment. When Wenrick made the purchase, maintenance and refur-

bishments were needed not only at the closed Crane Creek golf course, but at the facility that remained opened, the Osprey Golf Course. “There’s a lot of work that goes into maintaining a golf course,” Wenrick said. “You can just mow it or really maintain it, and there’s a difference.” Short-term improvements have since followed in the six weeks

of time. “Our teams have grown very quickly since our inception in 2010,” Perez said. “In just under two years, we are getting them to play at a high level; it’s scary.” “The kids have really grasped what the coaching staff has been

teaching them. It’s very gratifying to watch your players execute what we coach them every day in practice.” The Dick’s Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions will be held from Dec. 29-31 in Wesley Chapel.

The girls spent up to six hours of practice a week. “These girls worked so hard,” Appleton said. “With the dedication that not only the girls, but the coaches, assistant coaches and team moms gave throughout the season, it has allowed us to become a big family.” “It really showed through all the adversity that we had.” After their u13 and u15 teams placed second in the 2012 Derek Pieper Memorial Cup held in Wesley Chapel in mid-November, the Stampede Lacrosse Club, based in Palm City, will return to Wesley Chapel to participate in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions, the nation’s biggest youth lacrosse event. December bridge update Completion of the Veterans Memorial Bridge is eight months away By Patrick Bernadeau Staff writer PALM CITY – Time continues to tick toward the summer of 2013, the expected completion date of the Veterans Memorial Bridge. In the month of December, plans include preparing for first deck placement, setting and bracing end blocks on the bridge and forming and pouring for sidewalks, barrier wall footer and light pedestals at the mechanically stabilized earth wall. Originally known as the Indian Street Bridge, before being renamed in 2011 during the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, the Veterans Memorial Bridge is located in Old Palm City. The bridge will be financed by the Federal Highway Administration and the Florida Department of Transportation. Martin County will own, operate and maintain the bridge. After being contracted in 2009, the project which connects Stuart to Palm City, will provide drivers an alternative way to enter and leave the two locations. Although a small segment of residents are concerned with the new segment of traffic filtering into the area, project administrator George Denti doesn’t see much reason to worry. “These aren’t new people who will be utilizing the bridge,” Denti

“The reason why we’ve done all of the enhancements is that when someone comes to play here, we want them to walk out of here saying ‘Wow, that was fun,’ ” Wenrick said. “If they walk out of here saying that, they will be back.” Wenrick’s long-term vision focuses on Phase 2 of his plan. The hope is to transition the eventual solid foundation, created with community functions and tournament play at the professional and junior golf level held at the Osprey Golf Course, into the reopening of the Crane Creek Golf Course. “We are more excited about Phase 2 than we are Phase 1,” Wenrick said. “Phase 2 is just fixing up someone else’s mistakes. Phase 2 is all about creation, vision and passion.” “We intend to make Martin Downs Golf Club a true golf club, where it is a premier place to play golf.”

since the Green Investment Group purchase, as Wenrick estimates to have spent more than $1 million in maintenance and renovations. On the course, the fairways and tee boxes have been enlarged. The greens have been expanded back to their original size. New tee markers have been placed and the sand in the bunkers has been rotated. Off the course, the golf proshop has been remodeled. All the golf carts and golf equipment have been replaced. With the revitalization of the club restaurant, bar and banquet area, the club has been able to add 47 full-time jobs. The enhancements made are to help drive in memberships, as the club is accepting members outside of the community and golfers who are members of golf clubs elsewhere.

Graduation rates Spam-a-lot improve across Treasure Coast Martin, St. Lucie see jumps in high graduation rate in 2012 By Patrick Bernadeau Staff writer TREASURE COAST – At the conclusion of the 2012 school year, more high school seniors graduated in Martin and St. Lucie counties compared to the previous year. According to a report released by the Florida Department of Education released on Nov. 30, Martin County went from an 82.4 percent graduation rate to a rate of 84.5. St. Lucie County went from 65.4 percent rate to 70.6 while Indian River County saw the biggest increase of the three, leaping from 71.7 percent to 80.9 percent. “We are very excited that we

have an increase,” Martin County High School Principal Al Fabrizio said. “It’s certainly a testament to how hard our teachers in our entire school community work to make sure our kids are successful.” Four hundred and seventy nine students graduated from Martin County High School last year. The school had an 86.21 percent graduation rate in 2012, a 6.17 percentage leap from 2011. Fabrizio points toward the developmental of instructional strategies as a starting point behind the improvement at his school. “It starts at the general classroom level, with us working with our teachers through professional developmental on instructional strategies that increase the rigor and relevance in the classroom, enhancing the process of student

That’s a resume strong enough to make any program in any sport satisfied, but with the expectation of winning every year, the Lady Tigers understand that there’s more work to do. “There is a certain level of expectations for success amongst the girls going into the season and into games,” Moberg said. “They’ve always had high expectations.” What drives the Lady Tigers is that despite success in the regular season and district tournament, Martin County has not won a regional playoff game in the six regional appearances made under Moberg. “We don’t go into the season hoping to play well at districts,” Moberg said. “We go into the season expecting to play well in districts and then trying to figure how to win games in the regional tournament.” “That’s our team’s goal.”

GRADUATION from page 7

TIGERS from page 8 Although the true test for the Lady Tigers still remains once postseason play starts, the girls have responded well to their own expectations two-thirds into the regular season. Through their first 13 matches, Martin County has dropped only one game. The Lady Tigers have beaten teams by more three goals five times while only once allowing their opponent to score more than one goal in a game. Senior Morgan Bowman and junior Emily Spears have combined for 22 goals while senior keeper Madison Provines has recorded six shutouts. It’s that balance of attacking offense and solid defense that has Moberg believing that this season can be a breakthrough year. “Overall, this is one of the better teams that I have had the privilege of coaching in my eight-year tenure at Martin County High School,” Moberg said. “A lot of their success stems from pure determination and aggressiveness on the ball. They play off of each other extremely well and their communication and distribution have given us opportunities to win games.” “Hopefully, we will be able to finish strong at the end of the season.”

engagement,” Fabrizio said. “We know that when students are more engaged, they are more likely to attend school on a regular basis.” Fabrizio also points toward the culture set by him and his fellow educators at the school. “A very large of part of it is that there has to be a culture of high expectations, the expectation that student is going to be successful,” Fabrizio said. “With that, we are going to support our students with the goal in mine to get each one of them to accomplish their goals.” Although better graduation rates are steps in the right direction, there is still work to be done. “Even with the increase, we won’t be satisfied until we graduate 100 percent of our students because that’s the ultimate goal, Fabrizio said. “Anything short of that signifies that we are reaching each one of our students.” “That will always be our goal to reach each and every one of our students.” The increase along the Treasure Coast follows the trend of gradual improvement across the state. “Overall, I think really it’s

just a matter of schools getting really smart at using data and training strategies that match the kid’s needs,” St Lucie West Centennial High School Principal Kim Stephanic said. St. Lucie West Centennial High School had a 78.19 percent graduation rate in 2012, a 5.41 percentage jump from 2011. Stephanic credits schools in St. Lucie County focusing on the transition a student makes from middle school to high school, setting them up for success as upperclassmen. “All of St. Lucie County high schools have a ninth grade academy in place which, by design, is created to provide a transition into high school,” Stephanic said. “That transition has yielded positive results for kids earning valuable credits in ninth grade, which means they are better poised for success in grades 10-12.” Florida’s graduation rate has consistently been one of the worst in the country, finishing in the bottom seven of states in the country in 2011. However, the Sunshine State this year saw a 3.9 percentage increase from its 70.6 percentage in 2011. The 74.5 percent graduation rate in 2012 is an 18 percent increase since 2003.

Schroff heard, “Excuse me, lady, do you have any spare change? I am hungry,” and it marked the beginning of an extraordinary friendship that ultimately transformed two lives. YOLO!

GREAT YEAR!

It’s been a ...

experience a healthy quarter and the best locations will be selling. My advice: get the location, location, location you have always dreamed to own. Now is the best time to own on the Treasure Coast. Remember you can always change the kitchen, flooring, a bathroom or paint but, you can’t change the location. Now is the best time to own the best location you have ever dreamed of owning. Do it now...my daughter in college, Sarah, has taught me a new word YOLO. “You only live once ..Daddy.” My daughter is so right. We in this life ..only do live once. Make your dreams come true. There is a window of opportunity right now ...so get the location you have always dreamed of owning. In the next few months buyers will look back and say... If only I hada...I wish I shoulda...I coulda. Remember what I am saying now. Three to Four months from now buyers ,who I call fence sitters , will look back and wished that they had not hesitated to purchase the prime locations available now. These locations will be sold and once gone will never be able to be acquired again.

SO

I am asked where ever I go, “how is the real estate market?” Today’s current real estate market for the Treasure Coast is unbelievable. People are surprised when I tell them that our team is selling a home almost every day. What consumers need to realize is every county is and will be different as well as state to state. The Treasure Coast, Martin and St Lucie Counties, once discovered, becomes home to visitors. Once visitors drive over our bridges and see our unique waterways, visit the beach or experience our parks and infrastructure, they are sold on the area. The unique 4 story height limitation in Martin County resembled what Miami Beach looked like in the 1970s before the towering skyscrapers took over Dade and Broward counties. Our traffic is tolerable and has a steady flow unlike the counties south of us. Our education system and health care system are in the top rating in the State. Our weather is not too cold in the winter , unlike counties north of us, and is one of the best locations in SE Florida. I acknowledge our Sheriff, Police and Judicial system for keeping our area safe and their hard work to keep crime to a minimum. Crime does not pay and criminals are convicted thanks to their hard work. The Treasure Coast is unique and unlike no other. It is for these reasons it is my prediction that we will continue

Christmas show caps special year By Shelley Koppel Staff writer STUART – Jazz saxophonist Mindi Abair has had the kind of year of which other artists dream. As mentor to “American Idol” winner Phillip Phillips, she caught the eye of judge Steven Tyler. That led to a summer touring with Aerosmith and even a jam with “The Boss,” Bruce Springsteen, at a charity event. Now, the self-described “Christmas dork” returns to the Lyric Theatre for a tradition: “A Peter White Christmas,” featuring guitarist Peter White, trumpet player Rick Braun and Ms. Abair. The concert, on Dec. 15, brings Abair back to Florida, where

she grew up. In fact, when she phoned in for the interview, she was kicking back on a beach near St. Petersburg, taking a break before the busy touring season. She was thrilled to talk about her year of living fabulously. “Touring with Aerosmith was an incredible life experience,” she said. “I never thought I’d tour with them because they’d never toured with a saxophone. “ After the finale of “American Idol,” Abair got a call from Mr. Tyler, who said he’d always wanted to have a saxophone player in the band. “I went into his trailer and we were playing and singing,” Abair said. “He was about a foot away from my face-that voice-we went

back and forth, playing and singing. He asked me to go on tour.” For Abair, it was the fulfillment of a dream. “They’re one of my favorite bands and one of the most iconic rock ’n roll bands in American history,” she said. “I soaked it in. I grew up on Aerosmith and rock ‘n roll. I took me awhile to come to jazz.” Abair also had the opportunity to play with Bruce Springsteen, in tribute to his long-time saxophonist, Clarence Clemons, who died in 2011. “It’s still a tragedy to lose him,” Abair said. “I put out a post on Facebook about how much he influenced me. When Springsteen needed a sax player who knew

Clarence’s part, Max Weinberg, Springsteen’s drummer, knew that I knew Clarence Clemons’ solos note for note. “I hopped on a plane. It was a dream for me. I never thought I’d play with Bruce Springsteen. It’s a moment I’ll always remember. My heart was pounding in my chest, to step into Clarence’s shoes and play with Bruce the things that Clarence played. Now it’s Christmas time, and for Mindi Abair, that should include a trip to Stuart. “We can’t do the Christmas show and not have it in Stuart,” she said. “I do all my Christmas shopping there. This is a tra-

ABAIR from page 17 ditional, very endearing show. It’s one of the very few shows I’ve been a part of that every age group gets into and loves. “There’s amazing Christmas music and ‘dorky’ moments. None of us is afraid to poke fun at each other and ourselves. The musicianship is stellar and there’s a lot of new things we’re adding.” Abair is still surprised by the year that just passed. She had no idea what her appearance on “American Idol” would lead to and how her art would change. “I never saw it all coming,” she said. “It was beautiful. This

year, I reached outside my usual box by playing songs I’ve written. Playing outside my comfort zone has been a gift. It’s brought me to different places as a performer and a writer. My shows and records will be different. It’s been a real year of growth. Life is a total journey. It’s fun to see what’s next.” “A Peter White Christmas” comes to the Lyric Theatre, 59 S.W. Flagler Ave., Stuart on Dec. 15 for shows at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $45. Call the box office at (772) 286-7827 or order online at www.lyrictheatre.com.

How a HealtHy MoutH Could Save your Heart . Your mouth may not come to mind when you ponder the health of your heart, but research is growing that suggests periodontal (gum) disease may be closely linked to instances of cardiovascular disease. Red, swollen, and bleeding gums, which are characteristic of gum disease, offer an ideal pathway for the over 600 different kinds of bacteria in your mouth to enter your bloodstream. Stuart dentist Dr. Michael Sohl discusses two popular theories that may explain the connection between gum disease and heart disease
