PALM CITY — After being on hiatus a couple years, the Copeland Christmas is back. “We have the outdoor lights that are synchronized to music,” Danielle Copeland said. “We have the whole inside of the house decorated.” Danielle said visitors this year are treated to 30,000 dancing lights performing to “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas,” a compilation of traditional and top-40 Christmas music, and— “We’ve got a Trans-Siberian Orchestra song called, ‘Wish Lizst (Toy Shop Madness).’” That’s a driving piano duet accompanied by electric guitar. What else would you expect from the Trans-Siberian Orchestra? If you didn’t catch it, Liszt is a reference to Franz Liszt, a Hungarian composer who lived in the 1800s. The light show is about 10 minutes. The Copelands entertained Palm City with their extravagant light shows and home tours from 2006 to 2011 on 24th Lane. During the break, they’ve moved six doors down. In addition to the synchronized light show, they’ve opened their new home for visitors to see it adorned for the advent season. Some nights they serve punch, too. This year, there’s something new. “We took everything out of the garage and created what we call

MARTIN COUNTY — When firefighters, police, emergency medical personnel and others responded on Sept. 11, 2001, they encountered destruction and unspeakable horrors. For many, the day marked one of the worst 24 hour periods in United States history. Out of that tragedy, a group of 911 responders formed in Martin County, determined to keep the memory alive, but also to show that there is good in society. Dennis McKenna, a member of USA 911 First Responders, said he’s been involved in creating memorials for those who died on Sept. 11, 2001. But, he said, that while people remember that time, they are more focused on looking forward, to try to make some

positive experiences emerge from so much destruction and loss. So besides remembering the event, the group has worked to help people in the community to improve life. “We’re always doing something for someone,” he said. That can include taking a homeless person shopping, taking Haitian children from Fort Pierce on a field trip to Lion Country Safari, providing lifts for people with disabilities, helping kids in single parent families and providing assistance in other ways. McKenna said he helped one young woman who had been using drugs. Now, he said, she is moving on in life and furthering her education. One of the more recent efforts to help people shows that “there are caring people out there volunteering their time and services to make this community a better place,” McKenna said. McKenna said he was contacted by Mary Harris, the grandmother

The workshop has a U.S.A. tree, and a nearby flight school for young reindeer aspiring to pull Santa’s Sleigh. “All of our tools have been put into the hands of little elves,” Danielle said. “It’s really cute.” John and Danielle Copeland brought the extravagant holiday show to Palm City back in 2006. It’s a family tradition stretching back three generations in Palm Beach County. “John’s grandparents started decorating their house a lot,” Danielle said. “Inside and outside. It became, accidentally, the place where people would hang out every December. That’s not what they set out for, but that’s what it became.” So John’s grandparents bowed to fate and started deliberately decorating to give the community a show. The Christmas custom passed to John’s parents, and then to his brother, Jim, and him. Danielle said that some of the decorations they have on display date back to John’s grandparents. “I love the old stuff,” she said. Danielle added, “The old dolls have such a different look on their face (than modern ones). They’re adorable. They’re in our living room.” Additionally, while the Copelands

The Copelands have inspired others, including David Castle, who lights up Palm City with a nearly 80,000-light show created on a 9,000-channel computer program. “The actual inspiration for the computerized display is from another family here in Palm City, the Copeland family,” David told Your

coached her son. “It’s about time he was recognized for his selfless dedication to the children of Martin County,” said White. White’s nomination was bolstered by letters from Martin County Parks and Recreation (MCPR) director Kevin Abbate, former Martin County commissioner Ed Ciampi, and a former student, David Marsh, who was recently appointed 2016 U.S. Women’s Olympic Swim Team Head Coach. Toner’s talent is highlighted by his patience and dedication, says Duff Daily, a former student and close friend for nearly 50 years. Toner has been particularly successful coaching special needs, blind, and paralyzed children. According to Toner, he just started teaching one day, and the kids began to respond. Nearly 5 decades later, he is still in awe of his students. “It’s really humbling,” he says. “The kids make me look good. The coaches and instructors that are with me make me look good. I’m in the front, but in the meantime they’re the ones who help make this whole program.” Before moving to Palm City in 1992, Toner was a high school history teacher and swim coach in Miami, where he founded Aquakids. Once he arrived in Martin County he introduced a

similar program at Martin Downs Country Club called H20 kids. This quickly evolved to Toner making house calls and administering private lessons at his own home until 2012, when the Aquatic Athletics Center at Sailfish Splash was built. Toner still gives private and group lessons and helps prepare competitors for swim meets. He has hundreds of younger students ranging from 18 months to 2 years old, but he says he also coaches many adults. Toner and his wife were instrumental in rallying support and providing consultation for the athletic center’s development. In Ed Ciampi’s letter of nomination, the former commissioner says

Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer Holly Laiben, director of Character Counts! through the United Way of Martin County, presented swim coach Pat Toner, of Palm City, with the ‘2015 Pillar of Character Award before a meet he was facilitating at Sailfish Splash in Stuart Thursday, Dec. 10. Toner has been coaching swimming to children and young adults for over 40 years. “[Toner] proved to be invaluable in the very daunting efforts involved in planning, designing, constructing and finally opening Sailfish Splash. I am certain that without Pat’s guidance, the entire project would not be near as successful as it has become.” It was enough that the olympic-sized, championship pool is completely funded by proceeds from the waterpark and has never once dipped into county coffers.

The entire complex also brings in a profit of up to $200,000 a year, approximately 5 to 10 percent of overall revenue for the park, according to MCPR marketing manager Craig Anderson. That profit is used for operational expenses, capital repairs and minor enhancements. Looming on the distant horizon is the purchase of a new diving well which will expand

Ask the Anytime Gal Expert Answers to your Health & Fitness Questions

Q

uestion: I want to join a gym, but how do I know which one is right for me?

Answer: If you’ve ever joined the wrong gym, you pretty much know right away. Your first clue is that you never, ever go. A gym can be wrong for many reasons — wrong location, wrong type of services, wrong hours or just the wrong vibe. Whatever it is, we often blame ourselves for not going without realizing what’s actually standing in our way. Exercise is hard enough — if you have to drive miles out of your way or the atmosphere makes you feel uncomfortable, that just adds to your lack of motivation. First of all, find a gym close to home or work. Make sure their hours are compatible with yours. If you like to work out very early in the morning or very late at night and they close early and open late — wrong choice for you! If you try to squeeze in your workouts on the way to or from work and your gym is so overcrowded at that time that you have to wait for every piece of equipment — wrong choice for you! If you like to use the free weight area, but your gym is crawling with giant bodybuilders who monopolize the equipment for hours — wrong choice for you! If you are a middle aged family man or woman who just wants a friendly, comfortable place to work out and your gym is filled with people who are dressed up, wearing makeup and look like

YOUR

Linda Lawrence they’ve never broken a sweat… wrong gym for you! My suggestion: ask for a guest pass and try the club out BEFORE you join. In a few days, you will know if you are in a club that will keep you motivated or make you want to stay on the couch! Question: When I use the treadmill, is it OK to hold onto the handrails or should I be moving my arms like I do when I walk outside? Or does it really matter either way? Answer: Don’t rely on the handrails! There are only two reasons to hold onto the handrails. First, if you have balance issues. In that case, grasp the handrails lightly to steady yourself and make sure you are safe. Second, it’s OK if you are learning how to use the treadmill. In that case, hold on until you feel comfortable, then let go. You move more naturally and your workout is more effective if you swing your

VIEW

arms freely. In fact, you’re working at too high a level if you have to imitate a water-skier. In other words, if you need to hold onto the front rails and lean back. This is a common phenomenon among people who incline the treadmill to a level that is more than they can handle. This position is bad news for the user and for the machine. This position stresses your arms and elbows, and completely defeats the purpose of inclining the treadmill in the first place. If you are holding on, you’re burning far fewer calories than the readout indicates. You will get more out of your workout if you reduce the incline to a point where you can walk or run without holding on. The same is true for the elliptical. The handrails on your gym’s elliptical trainers are for safety, not for bearing your weight. If you lean your weight into the handrail, you are shorting yourself on the calorie burn. Go light on the handrails and maximize your results! Question: Every once in a while my knees ache and I need to take a break from performing exercises like squats and lunges. Are there any other good leg exercises I can do to strengthen my legs without putting stress on my knees?

Answer: The hip bridge is a great body-weight exercise that you can do to strengthen your glutes and hamstrings all while working your core and stretching your hip flexors. This exercise can be done anywhere and with no equipment necessary. Lie on your back, knees bent, feet flat on the floor hip-width apart, arms relaxed at your sides. Squeeze and lift your glutes (bum) off the floor, pushing with your heels. Your body should be in a straight line from your knees to your shoulders. Hold this position for two seconds, then lower back down to the floor. Repeat for 3 sets of 15 repetitions. The hip bridge can also be performed with one leg by keeping one foot on the floor, lifting and holding the opposite knee towards the chest, and raising your glutes off the ground. Try it. This is a great alternative exercise! Linda Lawrence is the owner of Anytime Fitness in Palm City. To submit a question for future articles, please contact Linda at palmcityfl@anytimefitness.com. OUR MISSION We are here to provide our readers with completely unbiased news coverage. Fun and entertaining features about the communities in which they live. For our advertising partners we pledge to provide the most complete consultative and marketing programs possible for the best return on their investments.

Why you should enter your creations in the fair... Each year, folks bring their jams, cakes, paintings photos, and sculptures to exhibit in the fair. They get the thrill of winning a ribbon at the county fair, participating in their community, and getting a few dollars as premium money. But why is it important? Not just for fun, but because it helps promote skills and talents and keeps kids interested in learning and preserving the culture. If today’s youth doesn’t get a chance to see and touch a macrame piece for example, there’s a good chance the word “macrame” won’t exist in the dictionary in 10 years. Skills such as knitting, crochet, quilting and making jellies are becoming a lost art in young people. By bringing your entry to display at the fair, kids can see it and ask questions. If you are willing to come demon-

strate how you do it, the kids will stop and watch you. There are other areas that also could Jay Spicer use some help. Steam engines, iron lungs, blacksmithing, and glass blowing, are all great show stoppers that people will be interested in. We owe it to our kids to promote culture and keep youth interested in things other than video games. Have a fair day! Jay Spicer is the Fair Manager for Martin County Fair and a resident of Palm City.

Tiny Santas celebrate their birthdays together and raise donations STAFF WRITER

PALM CITY — The Fano children say they like getting things, but they were happy to donate their birthday parties to the White Doves Holiday Project this year. The three were all born in autumn and elected to have one party to raise toys for the United Way of Martin County’s annual Toys for Tots drive. “For kids who don’t have toys,” 4-year-old Emily said. The Fano family, which includes parents Dennis and Oksana, hosted the birthday bash donation drive on Saturday, Dec. 12. Dozens of families attended, filling a donation box to overflowling and then some. Nicholas said the toy-raising merriment met that most important requirement for children — it was “cool.” “I feel bad for the other kids who don’t have any stuff,” he said. So does his brother, Anthony. “It kind of made me feel good thinking about all the kids that’ll receive toys,” he said. Oksana said that while the children were enthusiastic Santa’s

The children want to make it an annual event. “Yeah, definitely, every year,” Anthony said. The family agreed to let Your Voice News & Views tell the story of the children’s selfless donation of their birthday parties to White Doves to inspire others to give as well. Every year the United Way gets requests and referrals for about 1,200 families in need. There’s a fun way in Palm City to give to Toys for Tots and get something in return: The Copeland Christmas.

File photo Congressman Patrick Murphy, Dennis McKenna and local officials take part in the ribbon cutting dedication. The memorial, which features a beam from the World Trade Center debris, was dedicated in 2014. The monument stands at the Peter & Julie Cummings Library in Palm City.

911 from page 2 of Holly Harris, who was legally blind and had cerebral palsy, which restricted her movement. Harris told McKenna that it was difficult to move Holly from her bed to a pool, which would help Holly in her physical therapy. The 911 responders group raised money for a lift that would make it easier for Holly to get in and out of her pool. Since then Holly has died and the decision was made to provide her lift to another person. That person turned out to be a New York City first responder, Bill Walsh. McKenna said that Bill Walsh, a retired New York City fireman, injured his leg in 1966 while responding to a fire in which 12 firemen died and 23 were injured. Walsh later worked as a deputy for the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. Over time, McKenna said,

Walsh’s leg deteriorated. “Being he was injured in the line of duty and suffered this traumatic loss, he became our first priority,” McKenna said. Walsh also told members of the 911 group that his sister, Rosemary Walsh, suffers from Arthrogryposis, which makes her unable to get in and out of her pool. It’s a situation in which a person has problems in movement because of their joints. The 911 organization ended up giving, at Thanksgiving, lifts for both Bill Walsh and Rosemary Walsh. Pools by Greg of Port St. Lucie installed the lifts at both homes at no cost. Alan Garrett, who is paralyzed and got involved with the organization, owns Access Able Designs in Vero Beach. Garrett provided the battery packs for the lifts. The Walsh family said the experience with the USA 911 First Responders has been life changing.

the facility to three pools and will attract higher profile international events. For about 15 years, Toner tried to convince city planners that the park was “first of all needed, and that it was going to make money, and not take money away from the county. Because it was built with the recreation center,” continued Toner, “there is a money flow that pays for everything. But as competition and colleges come in, the other side begins to pay for itself.” This holiday season, the College Swim Coach Association of America’s Winter Training Forum will utlize the center’s facilities for training and swim meets, drawing an expected revenue of several hundreds of thousands for Martin County. Every November as well, Florida High School Athletic Association holds swimming and diving championships at the athletic center which contribute to the local economy. Toner is still very much involved in all of the center’s regular meets and competitions. Character Counts!, which began in Martin County 20 years ago, is a program that promotes “six pillars of character” in the community: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring,

and citizenship. Pat Toner is one of nine recipients to receive the Employee Pillar of Character award this year. Each recipient is awarded a $50 gift certificate to a local restaurant in addition to the honor, sponsored by the Firefly Group. Character Counts! also recognizes Martin County high school seniors and seventh and eighth graders with the Joe Kordick Youth Character Awards, which are combined with a $1,000 prize for each distinguished senior. For the last 5 years, Character Counts! has also teamed up with the Business Development Board of Martin County to honor local businesses for virtuous character. This year’s Business of Character award went to Crary Buchanan Law, and last year’s to Martin Health System. In addition to the awards, the United Way division allocates $10,000 annually in mini-grants to local businesses for ethical enterprises. Thursday’s accolade was the first recognition of Coach Toner’s 47 year long career as “swim whisperer,” as White calls him. As Toner lined up for a photo-op with several of his students, the children seemed eager to repay the support and devotion that Toner has shown them over the years. The crowd beamed with pride and love for this one individual in their midst.

MARTIN COUNTY — The Martin Health System Board of Directors has announced the successor for Mark Robitaille, president and chief executive officer, who will retire within the next year. After an extensive evaluation and search process, Rob Lord, currently Martin Health’s senior vice president and chief operating office, has been selected to serve as the organization’s next president. An ad hoc committee comprised of the Martin Health Board members, medical staff president, medical staff president-elect, and the chair of the Martin Health Foundation Board of Directors, was established to evaluate options for Robitaille’s successor. Korn Ferry International, a recognized leader in executive succession planning and recruitment, provided assistance in the process of identifying and selecting a successor. “Rob’s leadership, vision, commitment to excellence and inter-

PALM CITY – Each year, a Florida woman over the age of 60 is crowned pageant queen of the “Ms. Senior Florida” contest. This year, Florida’s current crown holder, a singer and Angel Flights assistant from Palm City, was able to represent the state on a national stage, at the “Ms. Senior America” pageant held in Atlantic City, N.J. In a contest centered around women’s inner beauty, talents and “philosophy of life,” Judith DeSantis was one of 37 women who competed for the national title. “It was a terrific opportunity that not too many people are able to have, and I was very grateful for it,” DeSantis said. DeSantis decided to compete in the State pageant following the loss of her mother in 2014. “I had taken care of her for 14 years,” DeSantis said of her mother. “After she was gone, I felt I needed something to get myself back on track. She had always loved pageants and I had been in two of them when I was a teenager. I did it for her.” The Ms. Senior Florida competition was held in March, and DeSantis was awarded first runner-up to first place winner Julie Lendon Stone of Fort Pierce. Shortly before Stone was scheduled to be in Atlantic City for the National Pageant in October, she had to bow out due to circumstances in her personal life. DeSantis received the phone call asking her to take Stone’s place only three weeks before the big pageant. “It was pretty challenging getting ready for that,” DeSantis said. Instead of worrying about the short notice, she buckled down and got back to work preparing herself for another pageant. “We had to give a lot of thought to our philosophy of life and then condense it to 35 seconds,” DeSantis said. With 60-plus years to look back on, DeSantis said narrowing down a lifetime’s worth of lessons is a tough task. For her 35 second memorized speech, DeSantis knew she would have to speak clearly and say something that would impact

transport ill and injured patients with financial need to medical facilities around the southeast region of the country. Overall, DeSantis said she participated in the state and national pageant because she believes it is a good way to inspire her peers to keep making an impact on the world around them, and to set an example for younger generations of what the “age of elegance” should look like. “Many women, after 60, sometimes lose their willingness to compete,” DeSantis said. “Some can fall into a time of depression. They ask ‘What do I do now with myself? What comes next?’” DeSantis said sharing her philosophy of life and putting herself on the pageant stage is one way to show women her age that there is plenty they can still do and still look forward to. “It’s a way to encourage senior women to keep going and to reach out to others that still need them very much,” DeSantis said. State Pageant Director Hedi Headley is seeking women to compete for the Ms. Senior Florida 2016 title. To be eligible, contestants must be at least 60 years of age and residents of Florida for at least three months prior to the contest

young people. “Most women who have reached the age of elegance have been through all kinds of family crisis,” DeSantis said. Many of them have wisdom to share about raising families, facing illness and suffering loss, she added. The two points DeSantis most wanted to convey in her philosophy of life speech was holding on to a love of family and helping other people. In addition to their “philosophy of life,” pageant participants were judged on a talent competition, evening gown presentation and personal interviews. DeSantis’ life-long love of singing and dancing led her to perform “O Mio Babbino Caro” from the opera Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini, at the Florida competition. In Atlantic City, she chose a Broadway piece, singing “Maybe This Time” from the film Cabaret. During her interview, DeSantis answered five minutes of general questions and questions about her personal life. Judges inquired about her involvement with nonprofit group Angel Flight, in which she and her husband, a retired American Airlines pilot, donate their time, airplane and money to help

PALM CITY — Three years after emerging from a difficult bankruptcy reorganization, Meridian Marina & Yacht Club seems to be healthy and vibrant again. The 11.75-acre marina on the west bank of the St. Lucie River at Southwest Chapman Way was originally built in 1988, but had fallen into disrepair. Partly because of the recession and partly because of the marina’s poor condition, the marina’s 300-boat capacity dry stack storage facility had barely 100 boats stored. Co-owner and managing partner Tim Mullen said last week the marina currently is at 90 percent capacity, or 270 boats. Mullen’s partner, Steven Brown, a real estate developer based in Chatsworth, California, was in town last weekend for the “captain’s meeting,” a party for his customers, and the Stuart Boat Parade the following night. The Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which Brown and his previous partner blamed on each other,

After taking full control of the marina in November 2009, Brown has invested at least $500,000 to improve the windstorm rating of the marina’s storage building, renovate the dock office, upgrade the fire suppression system and rebuild the service department. Brown said he is pleased with the progress, though “it could have gone faster.” “It’s a learning curve,” he said. “You make mistakes, you correct them and move forward.”

Palm City resident Greg Westberry, a marina customer since 2001, said, “Since the marina changed management, they’ve done an excellent job cleaning the place up.” Another Palm City resident, Brian Tobia, said he started storing his 23-foot Boston whaler at the marina in the middle of the bankruptcy process. “It was really dirty as sin here and wasn’t kept up well,” Tobia said. “The new management cleaned it up and the service is

to get me out of the weather.” Pat Grassick, who has lived at the adjoining Admiralty condos for 25 years and is president of the 22-slip Admiralty Yacht Club, said he has seen “tremendous changes” over that time from when it was the Martin County Marina, “some really good changes, some really bad.” When Brown and Mullen took over operations, the marina “was on a downswing because money had been tight,” Grassick said. “Tim (Mullen) keeps the place really clean; he keeps it with a sense of pride and he really works at it.” Brown said, “What we’re promoting is a boating lifestyle. “We have a community of boaters that participate together and that has made us successful,” he said.

good.” Martin County Commissioner John Haddox said he’s glad to see the marina successful again because of the role the marina plays in the Palm City community. “To me, it’s not only that they renovated the marina and brought it up to a very high standard, even more important is his community involvement,” Haddox said. “For example, they provide dock space for the Martin County Sheriff’s Office and the Coast Guard Auxiliary as well as hosting other community events such as movie nights and this year’s boat parade.” Blair Kuckie, a part-time Stuart resident who operates Pocket Hopper Boat Rides out of Port Salerno’s Manatee Pocket, keeps his personal boat at Meridian after bringing it down from Lake Michigan in October. Kuckie said he looked at “every marina in Martin County” before choosing Meridian, but “very few had indoor slips for my size boat. At first, Mullen didn’t have a spot to store his 30-foot day cruiser indoors, either, Kuckie said. “Two days before I was flying back to Chicago, they called me and said they’d have a spot opening up in two weeks that I could have,” he said. “In the meantime, they kept my boat in a service bay

PALM CITY — Helping People Succeed’s 2nd Annual Pinot & Picasso evening of fine wine and art presented the “2016 Art for Living Calendars,” signed by 13 artists featured in the calendar and their latest art from beach scenes, birds and Florida citrus to a turn of the century downtown hotel location, all presented at The Floridian country club in Palm City. Thanks to the support of host Bill Lichtenberger, who coordinated the evening for the second year, more than 150 guests were on hand to view the art work, bid on silent and live auction items from additional art works from the artists and specialty items such as a trip to NASA and lunch with an astronaut, to a foursome with noted Florida PGA champion Larry Laoretti of Palm City and a, Day on the Floridian, full day fishing charter. Enjoying the evening at the meet and greet event for the calendar artists were Denise Jenkins, Carol Kepp, Val Lally, Pam Patterson, Ginny Jones, Dan Mackin, Cristina de la Vega, Linda Relis, Sharon Ferina, Julia Kelly, Sue Ann Mosley-Saleeby, Marian Vitale and Yolanda Luce. Five of the artists were new to the calendar, another four had not participated for

several years and the remaining artists are featured each year. A special framed painting, the last of noted local artist Jane Blatt, who died in February, was available through a live auction to recognize her many contributions to Helping People Succeed through her participations in the calendar, in the annual White Shirt Night and other programs hosted by the nonprofit organization. Helping People Succeed works with more than 4,500 families in Martin, St. Lucie and Okeechobee counties. Among its many programs and services are Baby Steps, the BRAIN (Building Readiness Among Infants Now) program, Healthy Families, Behavioral Health Services, Community Connections and Employment Options. In addition, the organization provides after-school elementary, middle and high school programs for students with autism spectrum disorder, as well as serving young adults with disabilities looking to achieve a college degree. STUART — Get out your platform shoes, your bell bottoms, your mood rings and your polyester body-hugging shirts. It’s the 1970s and the best music is on the radio. Now “On the Radio-The Sounds of ‘70s” relives that era in a show at the Lyric Theatre Dec. 29. The show, produced by Kevin Black, creator of “Ballroom: South Beach Style” and “Cirquesco,” stars Mimi J, a former backup singer with Bobby McFerrin and Gloria Estefan. She and her dancers will perform dozens of hits from the 1970s by everyone from ABBA to Carole King to Stevie Wonder to Gloria Gaynor. The audience is invited to sing along, and who could help it? Mimi J spoke recently about the show and why she put it together. “It’s a revue,” she said, “It’s a bunch of ‘70s songs I grew up listening to and wanted to be part of the show.” While disco makes an appearance, this is not a show about white suits, disco balls and the Hustle.

Magic is no illusion for artist Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

STUART — Brad Ross says he is an illusionist, not a magician. When an intrepid reporter asks him the difference, he replies, “An illusionist gets paid about 20 percent more.” Actually, Ross is a student of the ancient art of magic and takes it quite seriously. “An illusionist is a magician who specializes in magic on a grand scale,” he said. “I started out as a kid, doing card and coin tricks. I wanted to perform on the stage and television and I focused on large illusions, with people levitating and disappearing.” You can see the difference in style when Brad Ross brings his show, “Unbelievable” to the Lyric Theatre Dec. 30. Ross, who grew up admiring David Copperfield and reading about Harry Houdini, spoke recently about his long love affair with the art of prestidigitation. “There is a long line of people with big dreams in magic,” he said. “It’s an art form unlike any-

thing else. It’s a niche area in the entertainment world. A select few get bitten by the magic bug as a child and I was able to pursue it. The show, “Unbelievable,” is (my) life story. The audience comes back in time to carve out the career path to where we are today.” Ross spent six years touring the world with Disney, and “Unbelievable” is a new show for this tour. “We’re in our second month,” he said. “We’re super-excited to spend the holidays in the Sunshine State.” Ross grew up in New Jersey, but spent some of the year at his family’s vacation home in Florida. He also attended the University of Miami, where he was a television and film major with a double major in performance theater. “Initially, my mom was worried that I was in a tough business,” Ross said. “Her first words, when I said I was going to become an illusionist, were, ‘What kind of life is that?’ They were very supportive through high school and college as long as I had a backup

plan. I’m turning 35 in December and I never had to resort to a backup. Magic has made my wildest dreams come true.” Ross is very excited about the new show. “It’s a modern collection of astounding wonders,” he said. “It’s a chance to experience the classical art of magic. There are six dancers, dazzling choreography and Broadway-caliber sets. The production values will rival anything in Las Vegas or Broadway. I’ll be debuting some never-before-seen world-class illusions. “It’s relatable to everyone, from the 5-year-old dreaming of being a MVP All-Star to the 65-year-old dreaming of something not yet done, the show is inspirational. It’s about not just following your dream, but to appreciate the magic that’s all around. “The message is that magic on stage is an illusion, but seeing the magic that exists all around us (is not.) We get so caught up in the digital frenzy. Magic allows people to appreciate something in front of you. It’s an impossibility turned possible.” Ross said that the beauty of magic is that it challenges the mind. Among his acts, he saws not one, but two women in half, with a surprise twist.

Magic allows people to appreciate something in front of you. They may figuratively or maybe literally float out of there.” Brad Ross’ Family Magic Show, “Unbelievable,” comes to the Lyric Theatre, 59 S.W. “In this show, I wanted to give people an idea of other styles of music,” she said. “It’s not all about disco. I wanted to showcase the other genres that were so pivotal. I love the soul section, with Gladys Knight. I love the Carole King medley. She was a phenomenal songwriter. There’s Fleetwood Mac and Tina Turner. It’s hard to say what is your favorite. I compiled all of my favorites. It’s like trying to choose your favorite child. They’re all different, but you love them all the same.” The show has ballads and upbeat songs and the audience is cordially invited to join in. “It’s a party,” Mimi J said. “Throw theater etiquette out the window and get up and dance. I’m going to be getting down and dancing with them. Let loose. The number one rule is to have a great time. That’s my purpose and goal in doing this show.” The singer has a musical theater background and performed in national and international touring companies of several Broadway shows. “I was a background singer,” she said. Singing in the background morphed into getting roles in the forefront. I was

always afraid of that. When I got the first try, I was scared out of my wits. I kept getting cast in the lead.” Most performers would consider that an enviable position. Mimi J said her friends and family urged her to create her own show. “I said, ‘You’ve got to be kidding.’ Then I said that it was not too bad an idea, to pick things I am comfortable with. It reminds me of being in my house and dancing in front of the mirror or with a broomstick. That’s what centers me. I feel most comfortable in the privacy of my own home. I still get jitters. If you don’t have a little stage fright, it’s time to retire.” The singer said that the Lyric audiences are wonderful. “They’re respectful and polite, but there’s love from that audience. They’re rocking out.” So come to Mimi’s house and join the party. It’s gonna be groovy. “On the Radio-The Sounds of the ‘70s” will be presented at the Lyric Theatre, 59 S.W.
