I have 10 on display.” Carbone said Sexy Sleeves are not the only artistic item making a hit with holiday shoppers this year. “We do hand-painted wine glasses and hand-painted martini glasses,” Carbone said. “They go well. We also have hand-painted ornaments and shot glasses, too.” Vine & Barley Palm City is at 2951 S.W. High Meadow Ave.. Monday-Thursday, it’s open 2 p.m. to midnight. On Fridays and Saturdays, it opens at the same time, and closes at 1 a.m. On Sundays, the shop opens at 4 and closes at 11 p.m. Its phone is (772) 781-1717. It’s on the web at www.vineandbarleypalmcity.com. Across town, Peter’s Hardware and Paint Center is also enjoying a good holiday season. Peter Wernick, owner, said while the number of folks stopping by the store is about the same as last year, they’re spending more. He said holiday shoppers seem interested in two things: the unusual,
and quality. “We have these fire pits,” he said. “They’re a new style. They look traditional, with bricks, but they’re lightweight. We put them out, they sell. We put them out, they sell.” Wernick said another big seller is a line of sturdy furniture his store carries. “They call it ‘forever wood,’” he said. “You leave it in your will. You die, and the furniture goes to your kids. Peter’s is open daily 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The phone is (772) 600-5088. It’s at 1105 S.W. Martin Downs Blvd., Palm City. It’s on the web at www.petershardware.com. Heading into Stuart, Steve Klaassen, owner, said Colorado Pawn & Jewelry, 2275 S. Kanner Highway, said shoppers are definitely going bigger than they have in recent years. “We’ve been doing good,” he said. “The main thing we focus on is jewelry.” Klaassen said shoppers seem to looking for the unusual, and upscale in everything, such as Cannondale bicycles and Beats headphones. “You never know what treasures you’re going to find (here),” he said. “You come here and find

PALM CITY — The Martin County Sheriff’s Office’s annual Festival of Trees raises a lot of money and presents to help families and charities struggling over the holidays. Usually the folks at the county’s animal control division pitched in with other departments to help out families. Not this year. For the first time in anyone’s memory, animal control is using the Sheriff’s Office’s unusual fundraiser to help an animal-rescue organization: Nala’s New Life Rescue in Palm City. “I’m glad they’re getting extra help,” Jordan Grose, a five-year veteran at the animal control division, said. “Any animal that’s rescued needs extra help.” But the story of the donation-raising Christmas tree starts with one of a dog, Francine. Back around August, animal control officers tracked Francine, a hound mix, from South Fork High School to Tres Belle Estates in Stuart. After a long dog hunt, Fran-

our Voice and sister publication Veteran Voice are gearing up to go 100 miles for the Lance Cpl. Justin J. Wilson (U.S. Marines) Memorial Foundation. We want you to join us. The Palm City charity is better known as Justin’s Wings. Frances “Fran” and Lance Wilson formed it after their son died in an IED attack in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He’d just turned 24. Its primary mission, from their website, is “to do whatever it takes to make sure that no member of our armed forces ever leaves or returns to this country feeling alone.” The charity’s largest fundraiser is an annual bicycling event: Riding for Heroes, co-sponsored by the Treasure Coast Cycling Association. On Sunday, March 22, 2015 — the fifth anniversary of Justin’s death — partners in Veteran Voice Ted Wilson and Sharon Elkins — along with their spouses, Linda Wilson and Marine Vietnam vet Ted Elkins — and I, are going to take off from Lance Cpl. Justin Wilson Park, 2050 S.W. Mapp Road, Palm City, and ride up to 104 miles to support Justin’s Wings. That’s a “century” in bicycle speak. “A century is just riding longer, keeping your butt on the seat longer,” Ted Wilson said. “That’s what gets to you more than anything — the butt on the seat, and the neck (fatigue).” Ted’s in his 60s. He’s “ridden a bike for a number of years.” Ted

ride. Sharon used to live in Atlanta, where she did a stationary bike to keep in shape. “When I moved to Sarasota, I saw that I could ride outside,” she said. I’m 47 and started seriously cycling around 1989, but about five years later took a long hiatus as I raised children and built a journalism career. I’d ridden a few centuries before then. When editor Tammy Raits asked me to relocate from DeLand to work for Your Voice and sister publication Veteran Voice, I decided to leave my car behind and start biking again to get in shape. The folks at DeLand Cyclery put me on a commuter bicycle, a Trek 720. I rode that bike 40 miles in the 2014 Riding for Heroes. After that, I quit riding so much and picked up a bunch of weight. I decided a couple months ago that training to do the full 100mile route at the 2015 Riding for Heroes would peel those extra pounds off me. The problem was that my commuter bike wasn’t made for 40-mile ride, let alone 100. Coincidences started following my decision. It all feels so Jungian synchronicity, really. Shortly after deciding I wanted to ride the full century, I spotted a vintage Bridgestone Synergy, a road bike that I seriously considered buying instead of a Nishiki back in ’90, ‘91. The neglected bike was on my fiancé’s friend’s
garage wall. She sold it to me for next to nothing, or about what I can afford. I rode the bike to a Veteran Voice team meeting, and mentioned to Ted that I’d like to wear a Veteran Voice T-shirt at Riding for Heroes. That’s when I found out that Sharon and he are also cyclists. Ted said he’d get us some Veteran Voice cycling jerseys, and we’ll ride together. You see, the Jungian synchronicity was doing its thing. As my SEAL friends would say, “Hooyah!” Fran told me that she got the idea for Justin’s Wings after a bit of family joshing during a phone call when Justin was in Afghanistan. “(Justin) said, ‘You guys are going to be here when I get off the bus, right?’” she said. Lance and Fran teased that the return from deployment was on the same say as Justin’s sister’s prom, so they wouldn’t make it. Fact is the whole family had every intention to see him when he returned home. After realizing the family would be at his homecoming, Justin said words that inspired his mother after his death. “He said, ‘A lot of these guys don’t have anybody to be there when they get home,’” Fran said. Lance and Fran decided that no service member should miss family over money, so they started

Give a man a fish ... onald Reagan stated, “We should measure welfare’s success by how many people leave welfare, not by how many are added.” Social welfare programs are a necessity of a civilized society, yet care needs to be taken by that society not to create a dependent class of citizens who no longer seek employment, no longer seek self-sufficiency, and tend to settle for the subsidized squalor that our welfare system has a potential to create. Our own federal wildlife agencies prevent us from feeding animals in the wild so as to inhibit an animal’s natural ability to find food on their own, but when it comes to our own citizens, the same government has created layers upon layers of programs that can have the same inhibiting effect on one’s desire and ambition to care for themselves and their families. We have all seen how children who are given everything grow into spoiled adults who are granted the “failure to launch” status by helicopter parents. We are keenly aware of the disservice that is done to a child to be supplied their every need, yet we are not so aware of what we do to our
Bill Hughes fellow man by creating a dependent class. We give housing, transportation, food, health care, day care, et al, not only to those who need it, but also to those who could succeed without these things, if they were not so dependent upon them. There is nothing wrong with someone desiring things, but when someone’s wants become more important than someone else’s, the rights of the others are trampled. If someone elevates their desires as being more important than others, the result breeds an arrogant, ego-driven, childish person.

This type person usually lacks in kindness, understanding, charity and compassion. Their world becomes wrapped in “what have you done for me lately,” and life becomes cheapened. When one always looks to others to gain what they should provide for themselves, individuality, self-respect and moral dignity is lost along the way. Our leaders tell people that the reason they are doing without is because someone else has in essence “stolen” their money and material possessions. People are told that the only reason they are poor is because others are so rich. People are told that they are being mistreated if they have a smaller, older car, live in a poorer part of town or don’t have the creature comforts of those better off than they are. How far of a stretch is it to imagine the entitlement mentality going and taking what they want when they are continuously told these things? Another harmful effect of building an entitlement class is that we take away the learning process of people. Life has its struggles, and if we take away the struggles, people do not learn

cine traded in her freedom for some Cheez Whiz. “She kept us hopping for several weeks,” Dawn Hicks, animal control officer, said. After Francine gave up life on the lam and went to the shelter, she showed signs of a serious respiratory infection. The medical bill Nala’s New Life Rescue racked up taking care of Francine was about $1,000. That’s how much animal control is trying to raise by offering bone-shaped ornaments folks can write their pets’ names on when making donations. They’re going on the sheriff’s Christmas tree for $5 each. The animal control folks have the tree at the Sheriff’s Office, 2401 S.E. Monterey Road, Stuart. On Dec. 23, they’ll deliver it to Nala’s, along with the cash and other donations. The animal control folks are asking the community to donate animal food, along with new and gently used blankets, toys and dog and cat carriers. “In the end, that tree with all the (pet) names will go to Nala’s,” Hicks said. Sheriff’s spokeswoman Christine Christofek Weiss said the first three to donate $100 or more will be named on “Top Dog” stockings. The relationship between law-enforcement and animals runs deep. Departments have used horses and dogs for centuries to assist in their missions. Indeed, K-9 officers that have died in the line of duty are often named on law enforcement memorials. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office has six K-9 officers, including one who works marine patrol. Sheriff William Snyder said his department feels the bond between the animals and his officers. “In the hustle and bustle of taking care of children, we want to remember the animals,” he said. Animal control officers said one of the best things families can do for all God’s creatures during Christmas is to remember that adopting pets is taking on an important responsibility that should be done without holiday blindness. Officer Michele Thonney said the entire family should meet perspective pets and look at personalities, not just fur. “You need to match the right people to the right dog,” she said. “I tell people, try to pick a dog that picks you.” They said that animals mismatched to families’ personalities — say a laid-back dog in a household full of on-the-go people — are likely to end up at shelters when they show their frustration, often tearing up furniture and curtains. Snyder said he’s seen families make rash holiday pet-adoption decisions and later regret it. “Christmas comes and goes,” he said. “The dog is still there.” Thonney said a common mistake pet adopters make is separating puppies from their mothers weeks earlier than they should. She said puppies should be with their mothers for at least 12 weeks. She said those separated earlier than that don’t get their full identity maturation. “They have the instinct of a dog, but the mind of a child,” she said. They’re inclined to bite children to establish their places in social order. She said if a family is adopting a puppy, leave it with the mother the full 12 weeks. Hicks said another common mistake pet adopters make during the holidays is expecting animals not to get curious and excited by the Christmas tree and presents. She advises placing Christmas trees behind children’s gates to avoid animal disasters. The folks at Nala’s were unable to talk to Your Voice News & Views, due to a family emergency. The animal-rescue organization said it’s grateful to the Sheriff’s Office for the fundraiser More about Nala’s New Life Rescue is at www.nalasrescue.org. MCLS offers survey to public regarding expansion of operation hours FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
For over 23 years, Santa’s helpers had been shopping at Teachers Pet and More located in Stuart and Fort Pierce for some fantastic “Stocking Stuffers” for children, adults and their favorite teachers. Now, they are shopping at the wonderful, relocated teacher-parent store in Port St. Lucie or on-line since the owners, the Walter’s have consolidated their two stores into one and are still doing business as… Teacher’s Pet and more. All educators know that learning should be fun and that “Toys” that teach will launch kids into education and it will last a lifetime! Lorraine Walter has always believed that our community deserved having their own teacher store and has continued the tradition that was started nearly 30 years ago. So help your kids and show your support by giving your favorite teacher a gift certificate or purchasing their learning games, puzzles, workbooks as gifts for the kids. Not only for Christmas but for Birthdays as well.

The store also sells supplies for the History and Science Display Projects.

“What is the best library time for you?” The Martin County Library System wants all members of the community to answer this question through a survey that is available now. While the survey’s main targets are residents that currently cannot or do not use the library, MCLS encourages existing users to complete it as well. The MCLS Library Hours Survey can be found electronically at www.library.martin.fl.us under
the “Library News” section of the homepage, as well as in paper format at any Martin County library location. The Martin County Library System believes everyone in the community needs access to a library. They urge residents to tell them when you need a library open so they can work towards making that a reality. For more information about this event or to learn more about the Martin County Library System, call (772) 221-1403 or visit www. library.martin.fl.us.

HUGHES from page 7 how to cope in times of stress and trouble. Innovation, creativity and drive are taken away when we supply everything to someone as a lifestyle. Charities are neglected by those paying taxes because we feel that we have given enough through our taxes. We know that there are so many agencies created to help others through our taxes that we lose our duty to help others out of our bounty. The entitlement state has “delivered” the rest of society from our guilty feelings of lack of charitable giving. I am not advocating doing away with help where help is truly needed, but we are turning what

hankfully the 2014 election cycle is over!! I’m not sure we could have handled much more negative rhetoric, which seems to intensify with each cycle. God helps us the 2016 campaign should start sooner than we expect. The 1 cent/1 percent sales tax was defeated by 72 votes. Many believe the wording discrepancy (“one cent/one percent”) caused confusion and perhaps could account for its defeat. Many of our members as well as our neighbors’ (non-chamber members) protested, criticizing our political action committee (C-PAC) for supporting the sales tax, citing it condones bad government and misuse of our tax dollars by lending our support to the tax. We certainly can’t disagree; however, we saw it as an opportunity to fix many of our roads/bridges in disrepair without a property tax increase. The backlog is $250 billion in maintenance alone. We will have to play catch up for many years, if ever, to garner those dollars through a tax increase; however, most believe there is no other solution. What’s unfortunate is nearly 50 percent of us (voters) agreed to

Q
uestion: As a senior citizen, I want to live the healthiest, longest life possible. With that in mind, should my focus be on weight loss, calorie counting or BMI? Answer: When it comes to longevity, a focus on weight loss may be misplaced, because BMI isn’t actually a very reliable indicator of life span. A more useful measure, some physicians say, might be muscle mass. Researchers analyzed BMI and muscle mass data from more than 3,600 seniors in a long-term study and they tracked which seniors had died, a decade later. Turns out BMI wasn’t much good at predicting chance of death. But muscle mass was: more muscle meant better odds of survival. The study appears

ANYTIME from page 12 gevity in Older-Adults]. My recommendation: Get up and start moving. Focus on trying to maintain the maximum amount muscle mass through resistance training that you can, and stop worrying so much about dropping weight and counting calories. Question: Do you have any hints to help avoid packing on the pounds over the holidays? Answer: Here are five simple tips to help you avoid holiday weight gain. 1. Start your January health push NOW. If you wait for the perfect time to start exercising and eating healthy, it will NEVER arrive! 2. Eat BEFORE the parties. Have you ever heard the phrase “never go grocery shopping on an empty stomach”? The same applies to holiday parties. 3. It is also helpful to log your calories/carbs BEFORE you eat them. This will force you to see exactly what you are about to eat and you may decide it’s not worth the extra pounds. 4. Eat vegetables and meat FIRST. Limit your desire for junk food by eating healthy food first. Eat two servings of vegetables and your meat, then wait five minutes before finishing off the rest of
your plate. Fill your stomach with the good stuff and, if you absolutely CANNOT resist the cornbread dressing (like myself), then have a bite or two when you’re too full to overeat. 5. Earn your feast by exercising before you go the parties. Most importantly, accept that every party is NOT a reason to over-indulge. Question: I have been following a training program to prepare for my first 5k run. I’m ready to race, but I want to enter an event that will benefit an organization in my community. Any suggestions on how to begin searching for an event? Answer: Entering a local fitness event (running, biking, swimming, etc.) that benefits a cause is such a great way to give back. Begin by searching for “nonprofit” organizations in your local area. These types of organizations will most likely have a variety of events, such as races, fundraisers, and community gatherings to support their company mission. The American Red Cross, your local alzheimer’s association, March of Dimes, and Goodwill Industries are examples of these types of nonprofit organizations. Many organizations have races

“If investors insist on trying to time their participation in equities, they should try to be fearful when others are greedy and greedy only when others are fearful.” Trying to “time” the market — that is, attempting to buy when prices are low and sell when prices are high — is a difficult task. Too many people do just the opposite: They try to “cut their losses” by selling when the market is down and then go after the “hot” investment whose price may already be as high as it’s going to go. Buffet clearly is not in favor of a market timing approach, and those who try to do it, he says, are probably better off by going against the crowd. Keep in mind, though, that even when holding investments rather than trying to time the market, investing in equities does involve risk, including

arren Buffet, the “Oracle from Omaha,” is considered one of the most successful investors in history. Yet while the investment world may seem complex, Buffet’s advice is actually pretty simple. Here are a few Buffet quotes, along with some suggestions on putting them to use: “Whether we’re talking about socks or stocks, I like buying quality merchandise when it is marked down.” Essentially, this means you should look for good investment vehicles whose price may have dropped. A “bear” market tends to drag down many stocks — even those with strong fundamentals and favorable prospects. These stocks might then be considered “bargains.” One way to determine whether a stock is “expensive” or “cheap” is by looking at its priceto-earnings ratio (P/E). For example, if Company “A” has a share price of $20 and earnings per share of $4, then it has a P/E of 5. On the other hand, if Company “B” has the same share price of $20, but has earnings per share of $2, its P/E would be 10. So it would be considered more expensive than Company “A.” Be aware, though, that the P/E ratio works better as a measure of cost when you are comparing two companies in the same industry. “Time is the friend of the wonderful business, the enemy of the mediocre.” Be prepared to own quality stocks for the long term; over time, your confidence may be rewarded. On the other hand, if an investment is not of high quality, its flaws will be revealed over the years.

MARTIN COUNTY — A New Year and a New Art Exhibit at Molly’s House features five talented local artists as part of Molly’s House Art and Healing program. Never, Buffet says. And while this endless holding period may not be possible for all of us, you get the idea: the longer you keep a good investment, the better off you may be when you do sell. “The line separating investment and speculation, which is never bright and clear, becomes blurred still further when most market participants have recently enjoyed triumphs. A long run-up in the market can increase your wealth, but it may also make you prone to risky behavior if you think that all your investments will rise indefinitely. Since the project, she wrote letters to friends, children, husbands, teachers, cousins, neighbors and anyone she could think of. Some she has mailed. And some letters are still sitting in her “to be tossed” pile. “The Letter Writing Project” helped her peel back the layers and figure out what is important in life. Wolff has found out through letter writing what she loves and what she doesn’t love. Some letters she will never have any addresses for, yet she still wrote the letter. With most of her letters, Wolff eliminated the possibility that if tragedy should strike again, she will never be left

Your Voice reporter to lead writing group
STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
PALM CITY – Calling all writers! Beginning Jan. 3, and on the first Saturday of each month thereafter, Patrick McCallister, a staff writer for Your Voice News & Views, will facilitate the Write Club, a writer’s group at the Cummings Library in Palm City. McCallister is a 20-year journalist who as written nonfiction and fiction as well as screenplays. “The group is wide open,” he said. “It’s a writer’s group for people of all ages, genres and interests in writing. I hope folks will bring some of their recent writing to read or have read, so others can offer their thoughts. I would like people to offer gentle and honest thoughts on others’ writing. I’ve learned you don’t need to be cruel to be helpful.” McCallister said that teens and adults should bring works of fiction, non-fiction, short stories, poems chapters of books and anything else they’re working on. “My hope is that over time, the group will define itself,” he said. “I don’t care why people are writing. A lot of writers’ groups have, as their goal, to get everything published. I don’t care if it’s for recreation, publication or leaving a memoir or legacy. They don’t have to know why they’re writing it. Whether they’re writing for publication, recreation or
therapy, they’re welcome to bring it in.” McCallister said the group is about one thing, “It’s about the art and science of writing,” he said. “I’ve been involved with writers’ groups off and on for the last 20 years. I’ve seen the good and the bad. There are two hazards. One is that people want the group to write something for them and the other is people who want to write for everyone else. I’ll gently sway the group away from that. I can be forthright and gentle in expressing my thoughts.” McCallister said that credit for the group belongs as much to Caroline Smith, director of the Cummings Library, as it does to him. “She told me there were a number of writing groups in the area, but they were all specialized in genres like romance or science fiction,” McCallister said. “My experience is that the best writing emerges from writers exposing themselves to a wide range of genres. A science fiction writer should expose him- or herself to legal dramas, romance and action/adventure and every legal drama writer should read a lot of other genres. “It keeps a writer from getting trapped in the clichés of the genres. If you look at ‘Star Wars,’ a lot of the story is a really classic war story, complete with espionage and governmental intrigue. It’s also a great Western, with

The next session is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 14. good versus evil and a gunfight in a ‘Star Wars’ kind of way. A good story incorporates a lot of aspects of different genres.” McCallister illustrated his point with the plot of a science-fiction story he wrote. “It involved our first contact with an alien and his accidental arrest in the dark,” he said. “It became a legal drama. The prosecutor had a murder scene, weapon and suspect. That meant a murder trial. The defense had to get past the profound fear of being in the room with an alien and the communication barriers

to get the story to defend him. The question was whether — if the killer isn’t human — our definition of murder applies. If the being is not human, does our system of justice have a place? These questions have a broader application than science-fiction.” For Caroline Smith at the Cummings, McCallister and the library are a good fit. “We were sitting around, talking about National Novel Writing Month activities at the Cummings

GROUP from page 25 that had just finished,” she said. “It just came together. At the library, groups are open and very inclusive. He had done (these groups) previously and came up with a great format of a fellowship of writers that is supportive, rather than critical. “It’s a really good fit for what we do. Writers are readers. The library in Martin County is a community library, and informal place to come together. I love the approach the writing can be just for your family, a family history.” All of this brings McCallister full-circle back to journalism. “Even nonfiction writers need to know about fiction writing,” he said. “Telling someone’s story is telling someone’s story, whether it’s a real person or someone you created in your mind.” McCallister said that writers’ groups also help teach some of the tools of the trade. He keeps a copy of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, published by the American Psychiatric Association, to help with characterization. “When I create characters, I pattern them on known psychological profiles. It keeps them consistent with whom they are. You can understand the motivation of why they’ve done what they’ve done.”
Patrick McCallister For McCallister, who hasn’t done much creative writing of late, the group gives him, and, he hopes, others, the motivation to do what they love in a spirit of camaraderie and professionalism. The Write Club meets at the Cummings Library, 2551 S.W. Matheson Ave, Palm City, on the first Saturday of the month, from 10:30-12:30 p.m. Participation is free. For more information, contact Patrick McCallister at (772) 4860940.
