TREASURE COAST — Some folks might have popped the corks a little early this year. “Wow! Merry Christmas,” Odaly Victorio, communications coordinator for CareerSource Research Coast, said when she looked at the latest state jobs report. On Friday, Dec. 19, the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity released its last monthly employment report of the year. The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.8 percent in November, taking the state

It’s refreshing to see that number come down.” The state’s unemployment rate started 2014 at 6.1 percent. By October it finally dipped to 6 percent. The state had been slightly above the national average for a few months, but in November was identical with the nation. In November, the not sea-

A Castle Christmas that will go on through New Year’s Day Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PALM CITY — America gets 50 percent brighter around Christmas time, according to NASA. Probably that’s because of A Castle Christmas, a 50,000- to 60,000-light animated holiday display in the heart of Palm City. “I just do it to make people happy,” David Castle said. “I see a lot of families come by; it’s something free and fun to do together.” Oh, about that NASA remark, earlier this month the space agency reported that its Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership Satellite has been peeking on America from the Friday after Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day for a while, and found that some areas get 20 to 50 percent brighter during the holiday season — all those Christmas lights. Florida is among the most holiday-lighted states, the agency said. Either that or it’s one of the few places where holiday lights aren’t buried under snow.

But, back to A Castle Christmas. “It runs until Jan. 1, as long as weather permits,” Castle said. A Castle Christmas is a 64-channel, 25-minute animated holiday show with lights dancing to a wide variety of music, from hip-hop holiday songs to the theme of “2001: A Space Odyssey.” “This year, because I added so many new elements to the display, I nearly doubled it this year,” Castle said. And word is getting out. “It seems like I’ve had a couple few hundred (visitors) the last few nights,” Castle said. “A couple hundred a night on weekend nights.” Castle wouldn’t — more likely couldn’t — estimate how much the display costs. There’s everything from the lights and materials to build things to put them on, to the computer program needed to coordinate music and the dancing display. But, he admitted that his wife, Beth, and their three children have, eagerly, sacrificed for it. “Enough that I actually asked

Peck said that about 65 percent of adult Floridians, and a third of children, are overweight to obese. Health professionals use the body mass index to determine appropriate weight ranges for adults. There are a number of widgets on the Internet for finding out one’s BMI. The formula for determining BMI is taking one’s weight in pounds and multiplying it by 703. Take the sum and divide it by his or her height in inches, and divide that sum by height in inches again. The ending number is that person’s BMI. It’s generally considered heathy if an adult’s BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9. Between 25 and 29.9 is generally considered overweight. Over 30 is obese. Body builders and other athletes must account for muscle density, and it’s better for them to use body fat counts. It’s usually better for the elderly to have a BMI between 25 and 27. Peck said that telephone surveys commissioned by the state health department reveal that about 39.9 percent of Martin County’s adults are overweight, and another 21.1 percent are obese. In other words, the county is slightly

Nevertheless, Peck said, Martin needs to make some modifications to improve its health. “Rather than losing weight, we need to focus on exercise and better eating,” Peck said. She said there are a number of excellent organizations and businesses specializing in weightand fitness-management, so the Health Department only works on gathering and reporting information, along with making tips. Peck said that folks can adopt the 5, 2 and 0 parts of the plan as they research area programs to decide which will best suit their needs to fulfill the one hour of daily exercise. Something else. “They’re finding out in studies that people who don’t get a good night’s sleep are heavier than those who do,” Peck said.

display?’” The children unanimously voted for the display. So did Beth, the one who spends hours building stands and arranging lights on the cords. By the way, the whole thing was, at first, David’s idea. “When I was a kid, we grew up in a lower income family, but we had a lot of Christmas spirit,” he said. His family bought used lights and displays at thrift shops. “A neighbor down the street had a display I really liked,” Castle said. “I have an uncle, he’s extreme in his decorating, even though it was tacky, but as a kid, I loved it.” The Castles moved to the area five years ago, and saw the renowned Copeland Christmas display, an elaborate holiday spectacle that included tours inside the Copelands’ Palm City home. Castle kicked into animated-display mode and that was that. The Copelands, he said, kind of passed the local Christmas-display torch to him. This is the Castles’ third year and things just keep getting bigger, better, more elaborate, and — “I kind of went overboard,” Castle said. “I have to rent a storage unit just for my Christmas display,” he added. “It’s my hobby. I’m not big into fishing or golfing.”

Helping People Succeed has help for adults with autism Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TREASURE COAST — Imagine being able to talk in detail about neutron stars, but being inept at seeing when listeners are bored. Being capable of comprehending statistical data and turning it into usable market forecasts, but unable to add two single-digit numbers if there’s a clock ticking in the room. Being able to describe how nutrients metabolize, but unable to make a lunch. How would you get along in the world? Pam Christofori, vice president of behavioral health at Stuart’s Helping People Succeed, said too often high-functioning autistic adults answer that question by cloistering in their childhood homes. She said adults with autism spectrum disorder are usually highly intelligent, but too frequently that does little to help them build productive lives. The reasons for that are complex and rooted in the three areas autism affects: sensory processing, social skills and executive functioning. “They’re getting lost,” she said. “They’re ending up in their bedrooms playing video games, or

on the Internet.” Helping People Succeed, HPS, recently started a life-transitioning program for autistic adults. Christofori said the program is 12 hours a week and the cost is based on a means-tested sliding scale from $0 to $36 an hour. “We just opened Dec. 5 and we have five clients,” she said. “Right now, we’re working on getting people in and the word out.” Christofori added, “Right now we have two guys who are 26 and 29. The program is open to those 18 and older.” All five live in Martin and St. Lucie counties, and none received HPS’s services when they were minors. The 26-yearold was only recently diagnosed with autism, although, Christofori said, the family suspected it for years. In addition to starting the adult services, the agency is looking for state, or grant, funding to start diagnostic services for children, Suzy Hutcheson, CEO, said. “Families have to go as far away as Miami and Orlando to get a diagnosis to get any services,” Hutcheson said. “You can get a diagnosis from a variety of different doctors, but to get a comprehensive evaluation

Living with autism spectrum disorder: an inside view

I

’m twice divorced, and can’t count the number of jobs, and friends, I’ve lost and don’t understand why. Autism has a lot to do with

this. Stuart-based Helping People Succeed is working on two projects. One is up and running: an adult transitional service to help those with autism function as adults. With high-functioning autism, a 25-year-old can have the intellect of an astrophysics professor, the emotions and social savvy of a middle-schooler, and the environmental sensitivity of an infant. Additionally, Helping People Succeed — which serves Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties — is working on starting up diagnostic services on the Treasure Coast that can help autistic children get detected, evaluated and the right services. All autism isn’t equal. It’s a very individualized condition. And, in my case, a very personal one. I hope my story helps you understand why Helping People Succeed’s efforts are important to children of on the Treasure Coast. “You have Asperger syndrome,” the psychiatrist told me in his book-lined office. “Very rare.” It was 1993. I’d moved from Florida to western New York with a girlfriend — whom I’d later marry — about six months earlier. At 25, I had my first failed marriage behind me. My girlfriend and I had disputes. That’s not unusual. But she’d follow me from room to room, yelling and touching me after I told her I had to back away from quarrels. That often ended with me repeatedly, methodically hitting myself in the head with heavy objects. Sometimes to unconsciousness. Here’s the thing — I didn’t know I was doing it. When the environmental and emotional stress combined and hit a certain level, something inside me switched and I became inexplicably self-injurious. I later learned there’s a name for it: the autistic meltdown. I had these autistic meltdowns in childhood when my mom kept yelling at and touching me, but they seemed to stop in my mid-teens when I was separated from her. But there I was one freezing, snowy night in an emergency room with head trauma. The emergency doctor directed me get psychiatric services. Over several weeks a psychi-

atrist had me take multitudes of written exams. Many asked me to rate myself against “most people.” I argued that I couldn’t rate myself against most people, since the world population was approaching six billion and I had experience with only a few hundred. I told the doctor that there were cultural variables of behavioral norms I couldn’t account for either. So, how in the world did the authors of these exams propose that I rate myself against “most people?” I now know that this literalism and rigid thinking are part of high-functioning autism and they were likely were the final straws that led to the psychiatrist’s declaration of Asperger’s. These days the World Health Organization and American Psychiatric Association place the pervasive developmental disorder that strongly inhibits emotional and social growth onto the autism spectrum. Unfortunately, the psychiatrist didn’t tell me what Asperger syndrome was. He didn’t tell me about my hyper-sensitivity to sounds, touch, smells. He didn’t tell me about how social development was impeded, leaving me unable to understand basic non-verbal cues. In the lack of information, I thought I was average, that everybody experienced things much as I did. Whatever it was, I remember thinking, “Asperger” and “syn-

MCCALLISTER from page 6 drome” had really bad rings; I just figured the doctor was using fancy language because he could and didn’t think about it. The doctor never referred me to any services. There may have been none to refer me to. The psychiatrist put me on a medication that I now understand was never going to stop autistic meltdowns. I needed education and strategies, not meds. Fortunately through trial and success I learned how to avoid the autistic meltdowns and haven’t experienced one since 2001. Still, I had a second failed marriage. Both the women I married said many of the same things about me. “You’re so sensitive to every little sound.” “Everybody thinks you’re hostile.” “You get so fixated on things that there’s no communicating with you.” All things teachers wrote on progress reports. In my case, lack of progress reports. When I was 8 or 9, a psychologist had my mother take me to a neurologist for an electroencephalograph, EEG. I don’t remember why, but I believe it was because I was sensitive to every little sound, people thought I was hostile and I got fixated on things to the point that there was no communicating with me. I remember the neurologist tell-

ing my mom, “I can’t believe that he can even sit in a classroom” Apparently he saw my brain waves showing the hyper-sensitivity to routine sounds, like finger snaps. But in the late ‘70s there was very little known about high-functioning autism. I was declared learning disabled and sent to a school that specialized in teaching LD students. The school did a lot of things right for a high-functioning autistic child, and I did pretty well. When I hit junior high, I was back to public schools with no services, or accommodations. I barely passed class after class, grade after grade. I got innumerable teacher lectures about how I was among the brightest students they ever taught, but I wasn’t living up to my potential. None of them understood how clamorous their classrooms were. Of course they didn’t. What neither the teachers nor I understood was that normal noise to most is cacophonous pandemonium to me. In 2007, I went to a psychologist to get an evaluation done, because of renewed involvement in family court. I knew eventually that someone would file court papers to get an evaluation. I decided to get it out of the way ahead of that. For the second time I sat in a book-lined office and heard a

man with letters behind his name say, “Asperger syndrome.” I hit the Internet and found lots of scary misinformation about Asperger’s. I decided to never tell anyone I have the disorder. I came up with all kinds of stilted ways to tell people about my environmental sensitivities and inability to read facial expressions and other social cues without the words “Asperger” or “autism.” After years of that, I slowly started being more honest and finally said, “I have Asperger syndrome. My life slowly got better. After decades of frustration, I’ve now got a fiancé who worked with autistic children and read up on Asperger’s early in our relationship. She understands that when I say I’ve got to have solitude, it’s about me, not her or us. She understands that I need to wear earplugs when we go to Walmart and restaurants. After decades of workplace frustrations, I now have an employer that lets me wear earplugs and sit in a back office faced away from the door, small accommodations that make a huge difference. Dr. Temple Gradins — an autistic scientist many credit with revolutionizing the process of getting beef to dinner tables — has a story so astonishing that it

to give you an idea of what that child needs, you need a full-scale evaluation.” Hutcheson said that Helping People Succeed has a leg up in starting the proposed new autism-detection program: a building for housing those services. “We have the space,” she said. “We have an office. What we’re looking for is a year’s worth of (operation) dollars.” Autism spectrum disorder is a broad category within pervasive developmental disorders, according to the “Fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,” published by the American Psychiatric Association. On one end of the spectrum, there are non-communicative autistics, those unable to verbally communicate. On the other, there are high-functioning autistics. Most of them can be verbose about favorite subjects, but struggle with routine conversation, small talk, because they can’t read non-verbal cues very well. While the effects of autism vary widely, some things are common. For example, most autistics — even intelligent, high-functioning ones — have noticeable deficits in executive function, the ability to plan and manage small and large tasks, from cooking meals to buying homes. Christofori said autistics tend to compensate for that by trying to keep things the same. “The inability to organize, people get stuck in rigidity,” she said. “With that executive function, that rigidity really interferes with your ability to interpret what’s happening around you.” She said this often translates to autistic high-school students who have the grades to go to college shunning it instead. They feel ill-equipped to handle change and the unfamiliar.

Autistics also have in common sensory issues. “Noises that we pay no attention to, make their spines tingle,” Christofori said. “Particular decibels of sound and (wavelengths). We have a young man who, if it goes above a certain pitch, he cringes and has to leave the room.” Christofori said the adult transitioning services helps clients identify how autism affects them and come up with solutions, along with teaching life-management skills, such as budgeting. The ultimate aim is to get the autistic adults in the workforce. She said that very often autistics go through lifetimes of losing jobs over easily solvable issues, because they fail to discuss them with their employers. “The other thing we spend a lot of time on is self-advocacy,” she said. “These guys, a lot of them have never stopped and talked about, ‘I’m on the spectrum.’” Hutcheson said HPS has about 5,000 clients in four counties — Indian River and Okeechobee, in addition to St. Lucie and Martin. She said a minority are autistic. “We’re just getting started,” Hutcherson said. “At most, we serve 75 to 100. This is a brand new effort on our part.” However, Hutcheson said that only recently has there been growing science about autism spectrum disorder, and Helping People Succeed has likely had many autistic clients without knowing it. “We’ve probably served people with autism,” she said. “The organization has been around for 50 years.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 1 in 68 children have autism spectrum disorder, 1 in 42 boys. To learn more about the adult transitioning services, call Christofori at (772) 320-0772. Helping People Succeed is on the web at www.hpsfl.org.

sonally adjusted unemployment rate for the CareerSource Research Coast region — St. Lucie, Martin, Indian River and Okeechobee counties — was 6.4 percent, a 1.8 percent drop over the previous year. Martin County turned in the best employment performance for the area in November with a 5.7 percent not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate. St. Lucie was a percentage point higher, 6.7 percent. In October, Martin had a not seasonally adjusted rate of 6 percent, also the lowest in the region for that month. St. Lucie was at 7.1 percent in October. The Port St. Lucie Metropolitan Statistical Area, MSA, — St. Lucie and Martin counties — dropped from 6.7 percent in October to 6.4 percent in November. The area had about 131,700 jobs in November, up about 1,700 over the previous month. October to May is typically the best employment period for the Treasure Coast, due to its tourist season. However, while the area gained in six industries, it lost about 500 jobs over the year in leisure and hospitality. That was the only industry that lost jobs.

“Having broken into the sixes is reason to celebrate, but there are still almost 18,000 people in (the CareerSource Research Coast area) who are unemployed,” Victorio said. The unemployment rate is calculated using a variety of methods. Among them are telephone interviews with workers. Those that are able to work and report not having jobs, but looking for employment in the previous 30 days are counted as unemployed. Discouraged workers — those who are able to work and want jobs, but have not sought employment in the previous 30 days — are not counted in the unemployment figure. Many call this “shadow unemployment,” and it’s inherently difficult to track due to variations for why people don’t seek jobs.

PALM CITY — Eight Girl Scout troops and a 4-H Club spruced up the holidays for nine area families, some badges, and a bit of fun. The Friday after Thanksgiving the girls decorated nine Christmas trees at Pinder’s Nursery, 5500 S.W. Martin Highway. For about a month, customers voted for their favorites. On Thursday, Dec. 18, those tress and their decorations headed to families involved with the Children’s Home Society of Florida. “We donate the trees; they donate the decorations,” office manager Malissa Werder said. This was the fifth year that Pinder’s and area Girl Scouts have had the badge-earning project. Roxy Goodman, 11, has been part of the decorating for four years. Her Cadette Troop No. 30143, is at Hidden Oaks Middle School. Roxy said she loves the annual event. “I was feeling happy, because I was with my friends decorating a tree for Christmas time,” she said. The troops have to pick tree themes every year. The Brownies decorated their tree with ribbons representing different fundraising causes, ranging from autism and diabetes to leukemia and breast cancer. The girls put an angel on top to represent guardian angels watching over those suffering from the conditions. “There’s only one girl in the troop who doesn’t have a family member with cancer,” Debby Artman, troop leader, said. As volunteers and professional musicians, we believe in the power of music and the importance of passing along a legacy of music to students. That’s why you’ll find volunteers from the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society working all year long, donating their time, talent, and treasure to help ensure that there are always plenty of terrific opportunities for music here on the Treasure Coast. It’s also why we encourage individuals to put a small donation in the hat we pass around to help ensure that there will be scholarships for bright, promising young musicians who want to learn more about music. And it’s why we’re so grateful to the Treasure Coast for supporting our mission and enjoying the music we share every Tuesday evening at the Sunrise Black Box Theatre in historic downtown Fort Pierce, and every other Wednesday evening at the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens. The History of New Years Celebration

The celebration of the new year on January 1st is a relatively new phenomenon. The earliest recording of a new year celebration is believed to have been in Mesopotamia, c. 2000 B.C. and was celebrated around the time of the vernal equinox, in mid-March. A variety of other dates tied to the seasons were also used by various ancient cultures. The Egyptians, Phoenicians, and Persians began their new year with the fall equinox, and the Greeks celebrated it on the winter solstice. Early Roman Calendar: March 1st Rings in the New Year

January Joins the Calendar

The first time the new year was celebrated on January 1st was in Rome in 153 B.C. (In fact, the month of January did not even exist until around 700 B.C., when the second king of Rome, Numa Pontilius, added the months of January and February.) The new year was moved from March to January because that was the beginning of the civil year, the month that the two newly elected Roman consuls—the highest officials in the Roman republic—began their one-year tenure. But this new year date was not always strictly and widely observed, and the new year was still sometimes celebrated on March 1.

Julian Calendar: January 1st Officially Instituted as the New Year

In 46 B.C. Julius Caesar introduced a new, solar-based calendar that was a vast improvement on the ancient Roman calendar, which was a lunar system that had become wildly inaccurate over the years. The Julian calendar decreed that the new year would occur with January 1, and within the Roman world, January 1 became the consistently observed start of the new year.

Middle Ages: January 1st Abolished

In medieval Europe, however, the celebrations accompanying the new year were considered pagan and unchristian like, and in 567 the Council of Tours abolished January 1 as the beginning of the year. At various times and in various places throughout medieval Christian Europe, the new year was celebrated on Dec. 25, the birth of Jesus; March 1; March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation; and Easter.

Gregorian Calendar: January 1st Restored

In 1582, the Gregorian calendar reform restored January 1 as new year’s day. Although most Catholic countries adopted the Gregorian calendar almost immediately, it was only gradually adopted among Protestant countries. The British, for example, did not adopt the reformed calendar until 1752. Until then, the British Empire —and their American colonies— still celebrated the new year in March.

The early Roman calendar designated March 1 as the new year. The calendar had just ten months, beginning with March. That the new year once began with the month of March is still reflected in some of the names of the months. September through December, our ninth through twelfth months, were originally positioned as the seventh through tenth months (septem is Latin for “seven,” octo is “eight,” novem is “nine,” and decem is “ten.”

Marriage and music a family affair STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

MARTIN COUNTY — Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. are show business rarities. In a world that is known for fleeting fame and short-term marriages, they have defied the odds. They have performed together since 1966 and the two have been married for 45 years. McCoo met Davis in 1966, when he established the 5th Dimension, first known as the Versatiles. They had a hit in 1967 with the Jimmy Webb song, “Up, Up and Away,” which won four Grammy Awards. The pair remained with the 5th Dimension until 1975, and had hits with “Stone Soul Picnic,” “Wedding Bell Blues, and “I Didn’t Get to Sleep at All.” A medley fron the musical “Hair,” “Aquarius”/”Let the Sunshine In,” won the Grammy for Record of the Year.” As a duo, they recorded “You Don’t Have to Be a Star,” which earned them a gold single and gold album, and a Grammy. They were the first African-Americans couple to host a network television series, “The Marilyn McCoo and Bill Davis Jr. Show,” in the summer of 1977. They have had successful solo careers as musicians and actors. McCoo and Davis come to the Lyric Theatre Jan. 7 for two

shows, with opening act comedian Stewie Stone. In a telephone interview, they spoke their lengthy careers and marriage. Music, they both said, was always a part of their dreams. “It’s what we wanted to do as kids,” McCoo said. “Growing up in St. Louis, I wanted to perform since I was 5, Davis added. “God gave me an opportunity.” For McCoo, singing was always a family affair. “I started singing with my parents and older sister at church in Los Angles,” she said. “Get us around the piano and we sing harmony. I thought it was awesome: ‘Look at me, I held my note!’ I was 7 years old and I didn’t know it was unusual to sing harmony. I was singing in elementary and junior and senior high school in talent shows.” Davis also took every opportunity to perform. “If that’s your passion, jump in when you can be seen,” he said. When the two began singing professionally, the Versatiles, sang in clubs and brought in musicians. “All of us had day jobs,” Davis said. “At the end of the night, after we paid the musicians, we had $35, but we sang and got paid for it.” Success came fairly quickly, but it carried its own worries. “Every song was not a No. 1, and we knew it, but we had

When we won it, we were so satisfied.” The couple said they enjoy the Lyric, although they have not seen it since its recent renovations. “We have been to the Lyric and the audiences are great,” McCoo said. “We love coming back. We do the hits and freshen up our show with new and unexpected stuff.” “We look forward to it,” Davis said. “We greet the snowbirds.” In the last few years, the duo has found themselves in the record business. “We’re releasing our own product,” McCoo said. “We’re taking a lesson from the younger artists and not waiting for record compa-

What’s in a name? In Fresh Catch’s, it’s accuracy STAFF WRITER

bzerisr@YourVoiceWeekly.com

MARTIN COUNTY — Fresh Catch Seafood Grill certainly lives up to its name. Owners Eric and Jocelyn Olsen opened up shop in April 2013, looking to provide the freshest fish of any restaurant along the Treasure Coast. Just by visiting their website, you can get an idea of Eric’s passion for buying the freshest fish. During a lunch trip Dec. 19, I spoke with him about where he gets his fish from as he was making rounds talking to staff and patrons. He said he’s a Florida boy, fishing all his life. Over the years, he’s made numerous connections with fisherman, who he buys directly from, along Florida’s coasts. “The only way I can dictate that my fish is fresh is to buy it right off the boat,” he said. “I’m very

picky about my fish and how it’s handled.” That day, he said they had fresh grouper, and the staff were busy slicing more than 120 pounds of snapper in the back. Sold. My guest and I started by sampling a few appetizers. The wait was short, and the view was pleasant. Fresh Catch’s brick walls make the restaurant inviting and the televisions and artwork — done by Jocelyn herself — kept me interested. There’s also a patio people can dine in. Fresh Catch also uses it for live music every Thursday night from 6 – 10 p.m. Jocelyn brought us our assortment. We had the firecracker shrimp, fried calamari, crab cakes and ahi tuna nachos. The nachos were topped with lettuce, tomatoes, seared ahi and a creamy wasabi sauce. They were visually striking with all of

FRESH from page 27 the different colors. They tasted great, too. I’m not fond of wasabi, but the sauce was what made the dish shine. It had a hint of wasabi rather than overwhelming the dish. The firecracker shrimp, a customer favorite, Jocelyn called them, had nice balance between creamy and spicy — probably not too much for someone who may think twice after reading “firecracker” on the menu. The calamari wasn’t chewy as I had expected, and the breading was light and delightful. I usually don’t order crab cakes because I tend to be disappointed with them, but these were phenomenal. Loaded with blue crab, you know you’re getting the real deal. And the dijon honey mustard sauce was nice touch. Again, the sauce wasn’t overpowering — a nice theme here. For soup and chowder lovers, Fresh Catch has a shrimp and corn chowder daily and other specials throughout the week. On this day, they had a lobster bisque. Jocelyn said it’s always best to ask what the daily specials are

because the catch of the day and new offerings are too unpredictable to put on a regular menu. For my main course, I went with the catch of the day: a blackened grouper fillet with mashed red potatoes and a squash, zucchini and carrot blend. The grouper wasn’t overly fishy tasting, something indicative of old fish, and the blackened seasoning added a nice, spicy bite to it. The mash was hearty, and the vegetable were seasoned well. My guest had the shrimp taco and said it was the best he’s had, noting the fresh veggies that topped it and firecracker sauce he got on the side. Fresh Catch offers a quality meal at a reasonable price with menu items ranging from $3.95 $18.95. There’s also a full-size bar with 12 beers on draft, a list of specialty drinks and a bourbon and scotch section on the menu. Fresh Catch is open from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. – 10 Friday and Saturday. They are located at 1411 S.E. Indian St. For more information, call (772) 286-6711 or visit freshcatchstuart. com.
