Community band always looking for new talent Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

MARTIN COUNTY — The Stuart Community Concert Band is celebrating its centennial this season. Maybe. “Last report, I think this is our 100th year,” director Christopher Kalwa said. “There was a book (at the Stuart Heritage Museum) that had a picture of us 1914, 1915. We’ve been around forever.” Centennial or not, the band will have its last 2014 performance on Saturday, Dec. 13, at the Blake Library, 2351 S.E. Monterey Road, Stuart. There’re two concert times: 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The shows are free. Kalwa said the community band attracts performers with a wide range of skill from a wide area. About 15 hail from Palm City. “We have 45 regulars,” Kalwa said. “Forty, 45, give or take a couple. Some Northern people come down and play with us when they can.”

philanthropic people who make him look good. “To me, it’s just like, well, I’ve got great friends,” he said. Flora’s company distributes Boar’s Head deli products to area Publix and other stores. Keith Muniz, president and CEO of ARC, said it’s true that Flora has surrounded himself with generous people, but said the man embodies giving and inspires others’ goodness. “They came up with the idea of putting on an annual holiday party for the staff, volunteers and people in our programs,” Muniz said. That’s not as simple a task as it might seem. ARC serves a diverse community of people with various intellectual and other developmental disorders. They’re not equal. For example, within just autism spectrum disorder there are non-communicative children and adults whose intellectual development is likely near normal and others who become verbose experts at particular subjects, but are years if not decades behind in social development. It’s one thing to entertain a room. It’s quite another to entertain a room full of people with particular sensory preferences

and problems. Yet, Muniz said, Treasure Coast Provisions sets a party that all enjoy. “They do everything from decorating it, to catering, to serving, to clean-up,” Muniz said. “All ARC has to do is show up and enjoy one of our biggest nights a year. Considering the quality of it, and everything involved and the decorations, you can bet it’s a significant investment of time and money to put that on.” Palm City’s Rachel Miller — whose teenage son, John Gordon, is a non-communicative autistic with social anxiety — said the folks at Treasure Coast Provisions do an amazing job. Her family has gone to the ARC holiday party for years. “We have a blast,” she said. Miller added, “I take my typical kids, and it’s always a fun kick-off to the holidays.” Flora said when the company was in Fort Pierce, it helped The Arc of St. Lucie County. He said it started when one of its clients went into the office asking for donor sponsors for a walkathon-style event. Flora, who has family members with developmental disorders, said the fellow was a born salesman. “Really charming guy,” Flora

He’s Catholic. “We have to take care of ourselves and others,” he said. “Especially the least of us.” He said growing up in church sensitized him to the needs of the community. “Even as a child, if I came upon anyone with a disability or handicap, or the poor, I was aware,” he said. Flora said his company and he can only do so much for the community. He hopes his award inspires others to give. To give not just to the ARC of Martin County, but to any of the many good organizations doing important works. “All that stuff is important,” Flora said. “We need to do more of these kinds of things for each other. At the end of the day, if we’re going to be Christian, Christ taught us to love.”

Kalwa said the band performs a wide variety of music, but there are some favorites in Martin County. “We play mostly marches,” he said. “Stuff you would know from when you were a kid — this is mostly for the older generation.” He said most members are in their 50s and older, but there are younger members as well. Kalwa is among them. The St. Petersburg native has been the director for six years. He got a degree in music education from Florida State University, then moved to Martin to work as the band director at Stuart Middle, and an assistant director at Jensen Beach High School. Shortly after getting his feet on the Treasure Coast, he looked into joining the Stuart Community Concert Band. “I got in touch with the old band director for the community band and kind of ended up taking over for him,” Kalwa said. The saxophone player said he can’t get enough of being around musicians of all ages and skill and creating beautiful sounds. “To me it’s just what I like to

Hundreds do the Mutt March strut to raise funds for shelter animals FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

MARTIN COUNTY — Lions and tigers and bears were among the creatures at the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast’s 12th annual Mutt March at Memorial Park in Stuart. Of course, it was the creatively crafted costumes that set these animals apart. Underneath the masks and outfits, there were fun-loving dogs that walked through the park with their proud owners. The proceeds raised from this event totaled more than $30,000 and donations are still being accepted. U.S. Congressman Patrick Murphy and Humane Society president and CEO Frank Valente led the walk around the park. Jennifer Ross of Sunny 107.9 emceed the event and announced Misty’s Pet Pals as the top “pack” fundraiser, with the Woof Pack and The White Family following. The top “individual” fundraisers were Humane Society volunteers Milena and Austin Gifford and Shaun Kelly. Luck was with George and Dana Coates during the random raffle drawing. They won the $1,000 American Express gift card, while Terri Paiva won a $500 card and Nicole Grow won $250. The pet costume contest generated plenty of oohs, ahs and laughs, and prizes were awarded. Best of Show went to Shaun Kelly, Brenda Woolston, and Lisa Barrett, who dressed up as the

DELEGATION from page 4 ocratic challenger Bruno Moore to keep his Florida Senate seat, District 32. The district covers the eastern halves of St. Lucie and Martin counties, along with a northeast section of Palm Beach, and southeast part of Indian River counties. Districtwide, Negron got 66.79 percent of the 175,505 votes cast in the race. In Martin, Negron got 40,756 votes against Moore’s 13,865. That’s 74.25 against 25.38 percent in a race that 87.44 percent of voters who cast ballots participated in. Likely that had a lot to do with the Indian River Lagoon. Negron headed up the Florida Senate’s Select Committee on Indian River Lagoon and Lake Okeechobee that put forth an ambitious wish list during the 2014 session for Everglades restoration and water-cleaning efforts with a $220 million price tag spread over three years. Instead it got about $232 million, about $12 million more than requested, out of a $77.1 billion budget the Florida Legislature approved the last session. However, Negron said in a phone interview that getting the appropriations was only the first step. His top priority for the 60-day 2015 Florida Legislature session? “The first is following through

with the projects we funded for the Indian River Lagoon and Lake Okeechobee,” he said. The session starts on March 3, and continues until May. Negron said he’ll make certain the funded projects don’t sit on anyone’s desk. Martin County is split between two House districts, 82 and 83. Rep. MaryLynn Magar represents District 82, which covers most of Martin County, and part of Palm Beach. Rep. Gayle Harrell represents the northeast section of Martin, along with part of St. Lucie County. Negron said passage of Amendment 1 will give the Florida Legislature millions more dollars to commit to buying lands for sending waters from Lake Okeechobee southward, rather than releasing it toward the Indian River Lagoon. Under Amendment 1, a third of the money raised by state real-estate transaction fees — documentary stamps or “doc stamps” — will be mandatorily reserved to the state’s Land Acquisition Trust Fund for the next 20 years. Doc stamps were created in 1968 to fund conservation-land purchases, but the Florida Legislature later shunted the money to the general fund and used it for other purposes through the decades. “Because of Amendment 1, I think we’ll be developing a strategy statewide on water projects,”

Negron

Magar

Negron said. Additionally, the Senator — whose wife is a member of the Martin County School Board — said he’d like to see education reform during the 2015 session. “I head (out) during the campaign, knocking on doors. Parents support testing, but there’s a delicate balance of how much testing we should do,” he said. Negron added, “I think there’ll be a top-to-bottom look at how we do our (student-progress) measuring.” Attendees at the meeting will

have an opportunity to address Harrell, Magar, and Negron. The Senator said the public meetings are a good opportunity for the public. He noted that the annexation of Beau Rivage from St. Lucie to Martin County started when a member of the community spoke at a delegation meeting. “We do pay attention and there are laws that came from delegation meetings,” Negron said. For more, call Negron’s local office, (772) 219-1665.

PALM CITY — Mary C. Phillips is a familiar sight around town. The avid walker regularly hikes over the 3,100-foot Veterans Memorial Bridge. It’s quite appropriate. She’s the chief of voluntary service at the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center, and is regularly helping folks do more than talk about supporting military veterans. She puts them to work. Phillips moved here almost 20 years ago. She came to be part of opening the VA’s West Palm Beach Medical Center. “I moved here to work at this medical center,” she said. “I was born and raised in Miami. I was living in Ann Arbor (Mich.) at the time working as chief of recreation (at the Ann Arbor VA Medi-

Mary Phillips cal Center).” More than 140,000 folks give about 11 million hours a year

at the Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers throughout the nation. There’s something unique about those volunteers. “We’re probably one of the only areas in the community that have more male volunteers than women volunteers,” Phillips said. “Why is that? Because many of our volunteers are veterans themselves.” Phillips said that West Palm — which serves Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, Palm Beach, Glades, Hendry and Okeechobee counties — has about 775 regularly scheduled volunteers. Of those, 348 were women. In all, volunteers gave about 98,800 hours to the local VA last fiscal year. “Volunteers are rated under an index factor,” Phillips said. “Voluntary service here, (last fiscal year was valued at) $2,227,917.45.” Phillips added, “That is the hourly contribution. If that was to convert to fulltime employees, that reflects 63 positions here at this hospital.” In addition to the adult volunteers, the West Palm VA has 177 youth volunteers, ages 14 to 17, through the Student Volunteer Program. Many are aiming toward careers in the military or health care.

Next to youth, the largest bloc of volunteers are those ages 61 to 70. There are 151 at West Palm facilities. Amazingly, 31 of the regular volunteers have passed their 91st birthdays. Phillips credits the good care many of those same volunteers get at veterans at the VA for their endurance. “That’s because of the good health and care and healthy living of veterans in South Florida,” she said. There are 138 volunteers who are ages 71 to 80. Another 115 are ages 81 to 90. “We have over 140 different assignments volunteers can work in,” Phillips said. “They’re on the clinical and administrative sides.” One of the biggest things volunteers do at the VA is help veterans keep in shape and have a bit of fun. “My largest block is actually recreation therapy,” Phillips said. Nationwide volunteering for recreation therapy includes many grand activities, such as repairing racing equipment at the National Veterans Wheelchair Games. But, recreation therapy doesn’t have to be that grand, or mechanically demanding. “(Volunteers) may take patients out in the community and provide (them) a luncheon at their

VOLUNTEERS from page 9 posts,” Phillips said. She said a lot of the volunteers create jobs at the VA no one had considered. For example, West Palm has a unique offering among VA medical centers thanks to the local members of the Telephone Pioneers of America. “We have a volunteer-based computer training program for our veterans,” Phillips said. The medical center opened in 1995, the year Windows 95 launched and changed everything personal computing and made the PC a household appli-

ance. About 3,800 veterans have learned how to use computers through the program. There are advance classes now, too. But— “We found out people didn’t have a computer once they left the class,” Phillips said. “A part of our program became a refurbishment of donated computers.” That was thanks to some Pratt & Whitney engineers. They approached the VA and asked what they could do for the veterans with their unusual skills. Phillips suggested fixing donated computers and preparing them for veterans. “We’ve issue over 3,300 refur-

bished computers to the 3,800 veterans who’ve taken the class,” Phillips said. She added, “Most of them, we find out, is they’re looking into the computer to stay in touch with their grandchildren.” Additionally, Phillips said there are people who want to help at the VA, but don’t have much time to offer. “We receive donations, either monetary, non-monetary or activity donations,” she said. Last year, folks gave about $387,000 in non-monitory donations to West Palm. They also gave cash, however. “This year we received about $165,000 in monetary donawww.edwardjones.com

tions,” Phillips said. “All of those funds have to be used for direct patient care.” Phillips explained, “Donors have the ability to make a donation and earmark it (for particular uses). Last year, we introduced e-donations. They can go on the web site and make a donation by credit card.” Among the non-monetary donations— “Our biggest need is non-perishable food items for homeless and indigent veterans,” Phillips said. However, she said donations of books and magazines are always a hit. There’s a growing need at the VA as more veterans these days are young women. “We have two baby showers every year here for our mothers to be,” Phillips said. “My volunteers go crazy making things for the baby showers.” Members of the American Legion Riders donate gift cards to the West Palm VA. Those go to veterans in financial need to help them shop for needed supplies at Walmarts. Most of the recipients are younger, recently discharged and trying to get their civilian lives going. Many of them also head over to the Veterans Job Search Workshop, a monthly two-part class. That, too, was a created volunteer opportunity. “I had a gentleman come to see me who was part of naval intelligence for 28 years,” Phillips said. After he left the service, he did work in human resources. “He came to us, and said, ‘I’d like to offer a class to help the veterans coming back,’” she said. Volunteers must pass background checks and attend an orientation class. The next will be in January. Phillips said the latest volunteer opportunity is helping patients in the cancer facility. Many just need people to talk with and help with minor tasks. “They can call our office and we will get them an application to start the process,” Phillips said. That number is (561) 422-7373. Phillips is in the office weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Whatever you’re craving, there’s a good chance Skewers Brazilian Steakhouse along Port St. Lucie Boulevard has something to fulfill it. Owner Frank Poma brought a unique type of dining experience to Port St. Lucie in July after Tutto Fresco left the building. After going to a Brazilian Steakhouse seven years ago, Poma thought it would be a great idea to open one locally. Skewers offers two types of dining. They can get the “Rodizio” for $29.95, in which guests start by heading to the salad bar, if they choose, then are served a slew of meats. Or guests can order by the pound — $9.99 for each pound. “You can’t cook at home like this for this price,” Poma said. “Not everyone can afford to spend $29.95 every night, so I wanted to do something more affordable.” The Rodizio is all-you-can-eat, but drinks and desserts aren’t included in the Rodizio price. From 5 – 8 p.m. drinks are sold two for the price of one, each night, however. And, if you prefer, you can sit at their full bar with an extensive collection of bottles on display. Calling it a salad bar doesn’t exactly do it justice, though. On

The soup of the day was creamed corn and bacon chowder, which was phenomenal. Going with the theme, it had a lot of meat in it. We flipped our tokens to green, and the gauchos offered us two medium-rare filet mignons. Tender and juicy, they were a hit. Having never had picanha, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was delightful. The sirloin had a nice outer crust, seasoned with salt and garlic. The beer-marinated wings were also a nice switch from the traditional, deep-fried variety. I’ll probably be going back to get some by the pound for a football game, soon. After having sampled a few other things, we were given a slice of pineapple, slow roasted in rum and brown sugar. That piece of fruit may have been worth the trip alone. Then came a dessert tray. I didn’t think we had room. My guest had a slice of three leches cake, and I had a piece of dulce de leche drizzled cheesecake. Each were nicely done and topped with fresh fruit. For a nice night out, paired with a large appetite, Skewers offers a lot of options. Located at 1184 S.E. StarStruck Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

MARTIN COUNTY — “Hello, Dolly!” is one of Broadway’s most beloved musicals. The show, with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman, is based on Thornton Wilder’s farce, “The Merchant of Yonkers,” which Wilder revised and retitled, “The Matchmaker.” The show opened on Broadway in 1946 and won 10 Tony Awards, a record number that held for 35 years. The story of the meddling widow Dolly Gallagher Levi was offered to Ethel Merman and Mary Martin, who each turned it down. Both later played the role. It finally went to Carol Channing, and she went on to make the role her own. The Teens Stars at StarStruck Academy will present the popular musical Dec. 11-14. Jennifer Jones, who is directing the production, spoke about her star, Katie Rodgers, and why she loves this show. “It could be Katie’s last show,” Jones said. “She’s a senior (at The Pine School) and she’s auditioning all over the country, I’m very excited for her. She has embraced the character and made it her own. Streisand was in the movie and Channing on Broadway. Katie has created her own Dolly with a lot of Streisand: calm, cool, with an incredible voice and smart, with some sass. I played the role in Stuart in 2006 and I’m quite specific about how I want to see the role played.” Jones is a fan of the composer, Jerry Herman, who also wrote “Mame,” “La Cage aux Folles,” and “Mack & Mabel.” “I love the music of Jerry Herman,” she said. “He

presents ‘Dolly’ writes music that can be loved by everyone, older and younger. We tell stories about the characters, about how we are feeling. I watch the kids feel it. With some composers, the actor has to dig deep to find the connection. Jerry Herman writes so well, it’s easy for the audience and actors to feel what’s going on. That’s fun. It’s a musical everyone can enjoy. It’s something fun, with meaning. I love to send a message.” Jones cites the monologue Dolly speaks before the song, “When the Parade Passes By.” “She’s tired of being alone and is ready to rejoin the human race,” Jones said. “It’s about being a widow. It’s intense, but inspirational. Katie’s doing an incredible job. She’s so happy in her life, but she’s itching to go to college and get on with the next stage in her life.” In addition to Katie Rodgers as Dolly, the principal cast includes Jack Zuver as Horace Vandergelder, Max Prissert as Cornelius Hackl, Aaron Simons as Barnaby Tucker, Becca Suskauer as Irene Molloy, Madison Bailey as Minnie Faye, Michael Stern as Ambrose Kemper, Sydney Wolff as Ermengarde, Audrey Millet as Ernestina, Jessica Gray as Rudy Reisenweber, Victoria Bartolotta as Mrs. Rose and River Hassett as the Judge. For Jones, who considers herself an educator first and foremost, watching the students develop is the point of the exercise. “As a director, it’s seeing their acting chops Katie Rodgers of grow and watching them being able to take Palm City plays their own experiences to tap into a character. the part of Dolly It’s rewarding for me as an actor and director.” Mitch Kloorfain chief StarStruck Academy Teen Stars present “Helphotographer lo, Dolly” Dec. 11-14 at the theater, located at 2101 S. Kanner Highway, Stuart. Performances are Dec. 11-13 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $19.99-$36.99.
