By Shelley Koppel Staff writer PALM CITY — Fran Wilson is proud to be a Gold Star mother, but it’s a title she never wanted. She became a Gold Star mom when her son, Marine Lance Cpl. Justin Wilson, was killed by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan on March 22, 2010. He was 24. Fran Wilson was there when her son boarded his bus for deployment. She was able to hug him and tell him she loved him. He told her how much it meant to him to have her there and asked her to be there when he returned. She promised she would be there

Pro-choice, pro-life activists face off at Treasure Coast NOW event By Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer ST. LUCIE WEST — As the Treasure Coast Chapter of the National Organization for Women commenced last week at Good Times in St. Lucie West to commemorate the 40th anniversary of a controversial court case that preserved the right to choose, members were met by equal opposition from pro-life protestors who gathered outside. During its first official event, the newly formed chapter marked the 1973 Roe v. Wade case in which the Supreme Court recognized that the right to privacy “is broad enough to encompass a woman’s decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy.” Pro-life protestor and Palm City resident Ed Daccarett gathered, sign in hand, with more than two dozen others. “There’s no halo over my head.
No one here claims to be a saint,” said Daccarett, who said there are other options than abortion. “Women who have had an abortion will say that the psychological, the emotional and the physical scars are for life,” he said. “There is help throughout the state of Florida. There are many agencies whether it be adoption, a maternity home, prenatal care and postnatal care. Most of it is free given by volunteers.” St. Lucie West resident Peggy Steffel said she and her husband became emotional before the event. “When we heard an organization was meeting to celebrate Roe v. Wade and the 55 million babies that have died since, we cried,” Steffel said. Inside, chapter president and Tradition resident Mindi Fetterman said the opposition only fuels her members to fight harder
for reproductive and gay rights. “One of the reasons that people who believe in our issues can’t get together is because they’ve been bullied by the people outside,” she said. “We don’t have to be afraid anymore to go out in public and say, ‘I’m a feminist, I’m pro-choice, I believe in equality, I believe in letting young people be who they want to be in their schools, I believe men can love men, women can love women and women should have access to reproductive health care,” Fetterman said. Port St. Lucie resident and representative from Emergency Medical Assistance Inc., Sonya Holbrook, said women and men must continue to assemble to ensure gender and pro-choice rights are preserved. The West Palm Beach-based nonprofit, founded in 1975, helps an annual average of 300 women and girls have access to “high-quality abortion services.” Holbrook said the service assists women with fetal anomalies,

STUART — American master jeweler and gemologist Terry Rieger sells hand-crafted custom masterpieces out of an unassuming Stuart storefront. Upon entering Diamonds by Terry, located along Dixie Highway in the Country Club Plaza, customers are instantly transported to a world of Old English splendor, where authentic high tea is served in antique china and jewels twinkle from glass cases. It’s conservative to say that buying from Terry isn’t a typical shopping trip – it’s a memorable experience. The married mother of two moved to Port St. Lucie 19 years ago and opened her Stuart shop shortly after. The Renaissance woman designs one-of-a-kind pieces without the aid of computer programming and can sketch a blue print of a design in less than 10 minutes, she said. Her designs include traditional jewelry staples from engagement rings, pendants and bracelets with precious gems to diamond encrusted animal and sea life. In her lifetime, Terry estimates she’s made more than a million pieces. Her store includes
Terry Reiger 4,126 pieces which range in price from $200 to $750,000. “It’s a wide range. There’s some-
thing for everybody,” Terry said. “Each client gets a totally different piece.” The walls of her store and tea room are adorned with plaques and awards of recognition from a number of local charities she supports. Terry cooks every reasonably priced dish on the menu, which includes freshly baked scones, Boston lobster cakes, chicken piccata and homemade spaghetti and meatballs. The menu changes every day, she said. “I want everyone to have a lovely experience and for the food to not only taste good, but look beautiful,” Terry said. “We use a lot of organic ingredients and everything is baked here. When you sit down, everything you order is cooked for you.” The Philadelphia native with an Italian heritage started as a painter in her teenage years. In her 20s, Terry, now 65, moved on to creating confectionary works of art from custom wedding cakes to sugar Easter eggs with 3-D panoramas inside. The occupants of the whimsical windowed eggs were meticulously detailed, right

WILSON from page 1 and she was, when his body was returned home. Fran Wilson and other family members wanted to make sure that all deploying soldiers had someone to see them off and greet them when they returned. She started the Lance Cpl. Justin Wilson Memorial Foundation to raise funds for family members or friends who could not afford the trip to see service members deploy or see them return. She wants to honor Justin’s wish that no member of the armed services leaves or returns home feeling alone. The Foundation has guidelines for giving assistance. The serviceman must make the request through a commanding officer or chaplain, to ensure that the request is legitimate. The service member can request family or friends. “They can have whoever they want,” Wilson said. “We’ve brought a mother and brother and a mother and sister. One trip was to San Diego and one to Camp Lejeune.” The foundation is small for now. Wilson has help from her husband and her brother, but basically, she is making the arrangements. “I don’t want to get overwhelmed,” she said. “We’re starting off small, to work out the kinks. I’m booking the airline tickets and hotels.” Wilson would welcome volunteer assistance from travel professionals. She doesn’t have much notice about dates of deployment and return and reservations often have to be changed. Having professional assistance might make it possible to help more families

To raise funds, the Foundation is planning a Riding for Heroes bicycle ride on March 10. There will be rides of 104, 60 and 40 miles, all beginning at Justin Wilson Memorial Park in Palm City. There will be family activities at the park, including a bike rodeo, music by DJ JON, fire rescue demonstrations, an egg hunt, magician and surprises. Wilson’s goal is to raise $10,000. Sponsors for the event include the Martin County Commission-
ers, Hair Cuttery, Publix, Martin County Fire Rescue and the Martin county Sheriff’s Office. Wilson’s goal is to raise $10,000. For Fran Wilson, it is all about honoring Justin’s wishes. “If I can help one or two families a year, I’ve kept Justin’s dream alive and given them a gift I never got to have,” she said. She said that unifying various economic-development efforts would help create direction for the area. “Our community — in terms of its economic-development strategy, and we as a community — needs to decide what we’re going to be. Are we a bedroom community, or do we want to be a vibrant community? Communities can be successful either way, but can’t be both.” Dougher said that Bryant also noted that economic development is more than attracting new businesses to an area. “The ones that are here, they do have the opportunity to leave,” Dougher said. “You need to have things on the table to keep them here.”

BODIE from page 4 and graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University with a dual degree in secondary education and English She was the first of her family to attend college. “I was thinking I’d jump into teaching,” she said. “Teaching jobs were relatively tight, so I relocated to California. My first job, I worked for a California brokerage firm. I was on the 44th floor on top of the San Andreas Fault.” After two years, she got a call about a position teaching English in New Jersey. It was a temporary position in her old high school and she decided to take it. “I had to work an extracurricular position,” she said. “The teacher I was replacing was the football coach. I was put in charge of the dramatics program. I loved it; it was the perfect combination. The position became available (permanently) and I thought I’d be doing it for the rest of my life.” Life, as so often happens, intervened. “My husband was offered the opportunity to take a job in Florida with an up-and-coming biotech firm,” she said. “We both love tropical weather and boating, so it was a no-brainer. I had a feeling I’d stay in teaching, but this was 34 years ago and I was shocked at the different standards and salaries from New Jer-

It was poor in comparison.” Bodie spoke to teachers from Miami-Dade County, where they were living. “I’d never been exposed to disciplinary problems and violence,” she said. “They were telling me stories and my eyes were getting bigger and bigger. I was horrified, hearing the war stories. As much as I loved the profession, I didn’t want to deal with a pay cut or the urban problems.” Bodie, a planner and problem-solver, made a list of her strengths. She decided her skill set fit human resources, even though she had no experience in the field. “I made a list of the top 10 companies in Miami that had vice presidents for human resources,” she said. “I told them I wasn’t looking for a job, but wanted guidance. I asked for 20 minutes of their time. Not one turned me down and I got three job interviews. When I jump into something, I give it my all.” The Bodies bought a home on the Treasure Coast in 2001 and commuted to work for two years. “We had always decided it was a two-year plan,” she said. “We knew we’d retire in 2003. We retired on the same day.” Now, Bodie had time for her dream. “Ever since I was 5, I was convinced I’d write five best-sellers,” she said. “While I was working,
I’d written short stories, poetry, newsletters and even training manuals. I always had my hand in printing, no matter how small. The game plan was that once Not The Same I retired, I’d do it full time. My passion was to write the ‘Great As Having More Money.. There are countless women and girls that experience a burden to simply access abortion services due to a lack of financial means.” “As we revel in the passing of the fourth decade of Roe v. Wade, let’s consider what we can do on a personal level to ensure that this fundamental right is ac-
tually accessible to all women,” Holbrook said. Cory Pfister, president of gay rights organization PRIDE of the Treasure Coast, said Roe v. Wade opened the door to the beginning of equal rights for heterosexuals, gays and lesbians alike. “In 1960 contraception and homosexuality was illegal,” Pfister said. “By 1964, contraception was available to married couples and then opened up to unmarried couples.”

Master Jeweler and Gemologist Terry Rieger’s 40 year career had an unusual beginning. As a traditional artist in her early 20’s Terry’s culinary hobby provided her artistic talent. She delighted in designing confectionery masterpieces. If she wasn’t creating exquisite decorated wedding cakes for friends and family, she was sculpting whimsical, mouthwatering candies, or designing sugar Easter eggs with complete 3-D panoramas inside. The occupants of those windowed eggs were meticulously detailed, right down to microscopic whiskers on the tiny Easter bunnies. One of those Easter eggs, a gift to a family friend, is responsible for launching her lifelong career in jewelry. The family friend was a jeweler, and so taken with her artistry was he, that he insisted her designs must be produced in gold. Her mentor, refusing to take no for an answer, arranged for a full compliment of jewelers tools to be delivered, and arranged for her to be the first and only student ever tutored by noted Russian jeweler Constance Osmanki. Terry found herself commuting back and forth to Europe for the next twelve Years. Studying and perfecting her craft in London’s famed diamond quarter Hatton Garden. Designing Horses, is a sad passion, as a child Terry rode her favorite horse Rusty, however years later she was diagnosed with allergic asthma and cannot be near a horse. So she designs them in gold. And as you can see they look exactly like the live ones. Terry’s passion remains custom jewelry: however, and her exquisite designs range from the extraordinarily graceful to the wonderfully whimsical.

Seacoast National Bank educates students on saving For Your Voice News & Views When Seacoast National Bank’s Cove Road branch recently formed a partnership with Murray Middle School to educate the children on the importance of saving, they did not anticipate the level of participation or the enthusiasm the children would show. But in the months since partnership was formed, the school has distributed information to more than 800 students, including signature cards to open a savings account geared toward younger customers. The math department has agreed to head up the initiative and there are several contests designed to increase interest and encourage children to save. “Murray Middle School is the most enthusiastic partner I’ve ever encountered,” said Dale Martinez, vice president/branch manager with Seacoast Nation-

The fact that the school administration considers us their partner in helping to educate the children is very gratifying.” Martinez and Amy Ondrovic, assistant branch manager, have both been invited to serve on the Student Advisory Council for the school. In addition to the savings program, Seacoast provided the math department with mock checkbooks so the children can learn life skills like how to write checks, how to keep a register, and balance their accounts. “I have to give credit to Principal Doug Peterson, his staff and teachers. They have helped to encourage participation and has been very supportive of the opportunity,” Martinez said. “This commitment is why Seacoast has

binations have the distinction of being eligible for Federation training programs and for consideration to compete abroad, after meeting specific criteria. Heather and her pony team have driven their way onto the list in the Four-In-Hand Pony Team discipline. For the Pony Four-In-Hand division, the Driver Training Long List is drawn up by the Federation on the basis of a driver/horse/pony combination achieving a total of 200 penalties or less in a national competition at the advanced level in the United States, a European CAI, or a national European competition (for which the Driving High Performance Committee has given approval). This qualifying score must have been achieved in any of the previous two calendar years, which indicates that those driver/horse/pony combinations are the strongest candidates for future teams. Heather has just come off a successful year in 2012; she brought
home the bronze medal from the U.S. National Driving Championships in Lexington,ky. She also finished with top honors at both Sunshine State and Live Oak International Events in Ocala, with her team of Welsh and German ponies owned by herself and husband, David Schneider. Along with competing her team of ponies, Heather is active in the local driving community as well. Together, she and David operate a private competition stable in Palm City Farms, known as “Team Wind Chase Farm.” They offer lessons for the beginner to the seasoned pleasure driver. They also host European clinicians, local pleasure and recreational drives, and beginner driving clinics. Heather and Team Wind Chase Farm have all eyes set for the upcoming 2013 World Pony Championships in Pau, France in Oct. First they will have prove their abilities and compete at selection trials in Florida, North Carolina and Bromont, Canada. PRACTICE ALIGNMENT STICKS
Two alignment sticks can be purchased at your local golf/pro shop for a nominal fee. I use 2 sticks – one I put along my intended line of play and the other along my toe line. I keep the ball within 6” of the intended line with ball inside of stick – that will make you swing the club back and thru on a fairly straight line. A bad player will swing the club outside the stick going back and way to the left coming thru causing a slice.

s p i T f l o G ’s y r r La of the Week
A good player will come inside the stick and go across the stick to the right causing a push or hook. The toe line stick will keep you parallel to your line – not closed and not open. It is always nice to know that you’re hitting the ball where you are aiming. Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer Colleen Broome, 15, of Palm City stepped into the role of Deb in ‘Ordinary Days’ and hit it out of the park during a four-performance run at the Lyric Flagler Theatre last week. ‘Ordinary Days’ was presented by Curtain Call Productions.

She gifted an egg to a family-friend in Illinois where she lived. The friend, who was also a jeweler, insisted she craft the eggs in gold. The rest is history. “When I handed it to him, he said, ‘Oh my God, this is wonderful. You have such talent. Let me buy you tools and send you to school,” Terry said. “He bugged me for six months.” After much convincing on the jeweler’s part, Terry obliged and accepted the tools. She became the first and only student ever tutored by famed Russian jeweler Constance Osmanski and for the next 12 years, commuted back and forth from the U.S. to London’s famed diamond quarter, Hatton Garden, where she studied. During her studies, Terry learned jewelry repair and how to cast, a process of making jewelry pieces that involves the pouring of liquid alloy into a mold. “All of these things were never done by a woman ... the equip-

Now, after a career as an actor, writer, director and producer, Brochu brings his one-man play about actor Zero Mostel, “Zero Hour,” to the Lyric Theatre on Feb. 15-16. His performance on the New York stage won him several awards, including the prestigious Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo Performance and the Helen Hayes Award. In a phone interview from his home in New York, Jim Brochu talked about the play and its challenging subject. Brochu met Zero Mostel when he was 14. Another of his father’s clients was David Burns, an actor performing in “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” Mr. Mostel had a starring role and the young Brochu, in his uniform from LaSalle Military Academy, literally ran into Mostel on stage. The imposing actor made a lasting impression on the teen. “I saw him in ‘Fiddler (on the Roof’) and it was monumental,” Brochu said. “I sat first row center. It was astonishing. He was extraordinary in it.” Brochu went on to other things and lost touch with Mostel. Then the famed actor came to see him in a play. “I ran into him on a street corner at 50th and Broadway,” Brochu said. “I asked him for a photo and he screamed, ‘You’re not worthy.’ When I got to the theater, there was a picture that said, ‘To Jimmy, with admiration.’” Brochu first thought about a Zero Mostel play when he was in his mid-50s. Mostel died at 62 and Brochu felt the timing was right. “If I’m going to do it, now is the time,” he said. “I read everything and watched everything. I rested for six months and then I started to write the play. It wrote itself in 10 days. I met a guy at a cocktail party who offered to produce it.

We opened in L.A. for six weeks and then in New York. We got incredible reviews and it ended up as 12 months.” Capturing the essence of such a complex, mercurial man was not easy. “There were two Zeros, when people were around and when he was alone,” Brochu said. “Alone, he was a painter who acted to earn money to buy paint. He spent hours in his studio on 28th Street. The play takes place in his studio. “Then there was Zero on stage, when even one other person was there. He was larger than life and outrageous. He’d make you gasp.” Part of the play deals with the Hollywood Blacklist of the 1950s. Mostel was blacklisted for refusing to name names before the House Un-American Activities Committee. His best friend, Phil Loeb, committed suicide after being blacklisted. “Zero was called to appear,” Brochu said. “I recreate seven minutes of his testimony. He took on the committee in a crazy, funny way. He baited them and made a mockery of them in honor of Phil Loeb. He testified six weeks after Loeb died.” Brochu said that even at serious, scary times, Mostel was funny. “The play is funny because Zero was very funny,” he said. He attacked everything with a sense of humor. He commanded a stage and filled up theaters with his personality. “He overcame obstacles both physical and professional. He was in an accident and almost lost his leg. He was in pain the whole time he was performing. He was a great example for us all. I think the audience will laugh and cry and come home with sweet memories of Zero and, hopefully, myself.” Jim Brochu stars in “Zero Hour” at the Lyric Theatre, 59 S.W. Flagler Ave., Stuart, on Feb 15 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 16 at 4 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $45. Call the box office at (772) 286-7827 or order online at www. lyrictheatre.com.

Solo artist Michael Claren, German born, has impacted the art world in South Florida. His use of color, photography and diverse subject matter and layers of texture creates powerful works that make the audience step back and think “Wow, amazing!” Much of the audience has had the pleasure of meeting Claren whose life is being made into a movie in Europe. Meet this artist who like so many others faces the choice of continuing to impact the Martin County art scene or return home because of the challenges here as a working artist. Diverse and intellectual, spiritual and outside the box, a founding
member of the internationally known and well-established “Inklings Society for Literature and Aesthetics,” Michael is indeed a master of his craft. His life story is compelling, his avantgard approach and creative genius will all be revealed, as we proudly present Michael Claren “This Is My World.” The opening reception is from 6 p.m-9 p.m. on Feb. 1. Prior to the opening there will be a silent auction from 1p.m- 5 p.m. Proceeds will go to Building Bridges to Youth, a nonprofit organization, managed by Ollie Harvey in east Stuart. Live jazz and a great ambiance await you at Osceola32 Gallery & Wine Bar.
