Turnpike toll troubles By Patrick McCallister For Your Voice News & Views Beverly Knapp wasn’t having a good week, and the Florida Turnpike made it worse. Her 13-yearold son had been hospitalized for a few days. On Saturday, April 28, last year, he was going home after a few days of in-patient care. “I wasn’t even attempting to get on the turnpike, but was going to the hospital,” Knapp said. “I took
the wrong turn. Where I ended up at was the turnpike, so I got on the turnpike.” And paid too much for a short trip. “I got on in Palm City, and got off in Fort Pierce,” she said. “I didn’t have a (SunPass) and I didn’t get (an entry ticket). When I got to Fort Pierce, I told them where I got on, and they told me $9 or so. I paid at the booth. That’s what she told me I had to pay for not having the ticket.” Knapp paid the too-high charge, because either the tollbooth attendant told her, or she assumed, that the Florida Highway Patrol would respond if she didn’t. Knapp can’t remember if the attendant said or implied that law

enforcement would get involved if she didn’t pay. Knapp said the exchange is largely a memory blur, because of her son’s medical concerns. Knapp is not alone in paying higher tolls than she should have. About a dozen folks recently responded to a Facebook query saying they, too, have paid a maximum charge when they didn’t get, or lost, their entry tickets onto the Florida Turnpike. “It happened to us and we paid it,” Karen Rinelli said in a response to the Facebook post. “Crazy. We got on at (the Becker Road interchange) and got off the following exit. Crazy!”

How do they do it? Teen recognized for achievements at Boys & Girls Club Youth of Year ceremony By Sydney Sabol For Your Voice News & Views By the age of 18, most people are lucky to have a few accomplishments under their belt, but for the members of the Boys & Girls Clubs, it may be a different story. The Boys & Girls Club is an organization dedicated to helping children reach their full potential and become model citizens. Every year, the Martin County branch of this organization picks one participant from each other five clubs in Martin County to participate in the Youth of the Year competition. This compe-
tition is to raise recognition for kids between the ages of 14 to 18 who have not only dedicated their time to the community, but have also accomplished many wonderful things like having more than 100 community service hours at a young age. This year, the honor was effortlessly bestowed upon five girls: Bria Anderson (East Stuart branch), Coleen Chan (Hobe Sound branch), Bridget Duignan (Port Salerno branch), Kadesha Singleton (Indiantown branch), and Lovely Davilmar, a 17-yearold from the Palm City branch. Lovely attends Clark Advanced Learning Center as a junior, and a dual enrollment student at Indian River State College. She has many big goals for herself, such as graduating with her high school diploma, Associate of Arts, Associate of Science in Nursing, and Associate in Busi-

TESTOSTERONE SUPPLEMENTATION: GOOD MEDICINE FOR THOSE IN NEED Many people think that males using Testosterone are simply looking for bodybuilder physiques. This is far from the truth. As males age, many hormone levels in the body decrease. Testosterone is one of the few that medical science has not adjusted for these level changes based upon the aging process and other factors. Decreased Testosterone can be linked to increased body fat, particularly around the mid-section. It can also be linked to sleep problems, decreased libido, decreased muscle size and strength, as well as changes in red blood cell counts. All of these can lead to serious health conditions as well as changes in lifestyle habits. Between the ages of 25-30, males start decreasing natural Testosterone production. Normal levels vary between 350 and 900. Dr. Libman notes, “ I have treated many patients who have come in with levels in the 100’s. They were tired all of the time, not wanting sex, and in some cases, caused borderline depression. Once their levels got into the 500 range, it was like they were new men again. It is quite amazing to see from a practitioner’s standpoint.”
Mitch Kloorfain chief photographer
Dr. Libman orders a set panel of blood tests to determine base line levels of Testosterone and other hormones to rule out other causes of the patient’s symptoms. Depending on the levels, age of the patient, activity level, and overall health, Dr. Libman may prescribe a topical Testosterone cream or injections of a compounded testosterone. Because there can be side effects, it is important to follow up with your doctor regularly, usually every 2-3 months initially.
A LAW FIRM OF GOLDSTEIN, SCHMITT AND WADE, PL is pleased to announce that the firm is expanding our areas of practice to include Social Security Disability claims as well as Workers’ Compensation.
There are many doctors jumping on the bandwagon of preventative medicine and anti-aging medicine. Make sure you get your Testosterone evaluation and follow up from a physician like Dr. Libman experienced in this area of medicine. “Be wary of doctors that charge you a flat monthly rate for treatment” says Dr. Libman. Testosterone supplementation, like other hormone replacement therapy, is not an exact science and you are probably overpaying for services in this manner. Insurances usually cover the initial evaluation, however, only certain plans will cover the medications. We work with our patients to get the lowest cost possible for medications.
We are pleased to welcome KELLY CAMBRON to our firm.

TURNPIKE from page 1 Sonyha Rodriguez-Miller said these turnpike users shouldn’t have paid the higher tolls. “The thing is, when a toll collector asks for that amount, if the customer says ‘I entered at this toll place,’ the toll collector is supposed to give the customer the number for the regional toll office,” Sonyha Rodriquez-Miller, public information officer for the Florida Department of Transportation, said. In other words, no calls to the Florida Highway Patrol as Knapp feared. Rodriguez-Miller said that a turnpike user can, and usually will, get a downward adjustment to an unwarranted high toll if he or she calls a regional office. Your Voice News & Views editor, Tammy Raits, did just that – called for a toll adjustment after she accidently turned onto the turnpike at Becker and went through the Stuart toll plaza. The attendant asked for more than $10. Raits didn’t pay it. Raits called the regional office to get an adjustment and pay the correct toll. No answer at two numbers. About 1.8 million motorists use the 460 miles of the Florida Turnpike system every day. “The tolls are based on two factors,” Rodriguez-Miller said. “The distance traveled and the number of axles on the vehicle. Think of it as, you park your car. If you lose your parking ticket, the attendant doesn’t know when you entered the garage. It’s the same when you entered the turnpike.” So the plaza attendant will ask for the maximum possible toll for that plaza. Most turnpike drivers won’t encounter lost
tickets for one simple reason, Rodriguez-Miller said. “The vast majority of our customers use SunPass,” she said. “Right now we have a participation with SunPass at about 80 percent.” SunPass transponders cost $4.99 to $25. Users pay slightly lowered tolls. The transponders are free to people with certain disabilities. The Florida Department of Transportation isn’t the toll collectors’ employer. Faneuil of Hampton, Va., is. They can’t adjust tolls. “Since (Raits) felt she was being asked to pay more that she owed and we do not leave it up to the discretion of toll collector to adjust the toll amount the customer should pay, our policy is for the collector to give the customer the contact information for the regional toll office,” Rodriguez-Miller said in an e-mail response to queries. The company employs about 2,000 toll collectors among several states. According to the company’s website, it’s the largest private toll-collection company in the United States. The company didn’t respond to requests for an interview by press time. Knapp said she’s certain that the toll collector she encountered didn’t offer a phone number to call for an adjustment to her high toll last year. “It didn’t matter to the lady,” Knapp said. “It was a matter of that’s her job, and that’s what she was going to do. Me paying the just amount wasn’t a concern.” Rodriguez-Miller said if turnpike drivers have already overpaid, they can get refunds by calling the Florida Turnpike regional office at (407) 264-3700.

Homecoming to the plate Lady Tiger legend leads the softball team as season gets under way By Patrick Bernadeau For Your Voice News & Views PALM CITY — The greatest Lady Tiger to ever grace a softball diamond has returned to lead the prowl. Following an appearance in the Florida High School Athletic Association regional playoffs in 2012, the Tigers begin the 2013 campaign with former Martin County High School softball star and Palm City native Jennifer Gladding entering her first year as coach. Gladding spent the last six years an assistant softball coach with the Florida Gators. The reason behind Gladding’s return is centered on the urge to come back to the place she has called home for most of her life. “I had been coaching at the University of Florida for the last six years, but I just decided it was time for a change,” Gladding said. “I was ready to come back to my home town, be close to family and start the next chapter of my life.” Gladding graduated from Martin County High School in 2000. As a freshman, Gladding collected a shutout victory in the state title game as she led the Lady Tigers to the 5A state championship in 1997. Gladding spent the first two years of her collegiate playing

She completed her playing career at the University of Florida, where she set a number of career and single-season school records, including career opponent batting average, most strikeouts and best winning percentage in a single season.

The greatest challenge Gladding faces in leading her ball club this season is re-acclimating herself with the nuances of high school level softball after spending more than a decade playing and coaching collegiately. “Trying to figure out the differences in coaching from college to high school has been the biggest challenge,” Gladding said. “The players are different. The skill
levels amongst the players are different, so the goal is to assimilate them all into one team.” In addition to the players, the Gladding is learning on the fly about her competition and the teams in the area. “I’m still trying to get to know the district and the strengths of the teams within the district,”

The winner was chosen at a ceremony which took place on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the IRSC Chastain Campus in Stuart. The award went to Bria Anderson, a 17-year-old student from Jensen Beach High School. This was Bria’s second win, as she won the award in 2011 as well. Bria has been a part of the East Stuart Boys & Girls Club for 11 years and counting. Although she grew up without a father, she found comfort in the Boys & Girls Club. “The Boys & Girls Club was a safe haven that always stayed the same, and something that I could always look forward to every day after school.” From here, Bria will go on to compete at the state level. Although Lovely did not win, she plans to achieve her dream of becoming a neonatal nurse practitioner.
Allstarz, which is a fusion of hiphop and dance. “From the time she was growing, I knew she was going to be a leader,” Lovely’s mother, Macdalie Oumoithe, said proudly. Just this past year, she was nominated as the president of Keystone Club, a community service club run by the teams of the Boys & Girls Club. “As my primary role in Keystone club, I just keep the club informed and involved throughout the community for opportunities and connections for them.” Lovely stated. With all of her great achievements, it’s no surprise that this was Lovely’s second time being nominated for Youth of the Year, so when it came time to stand before the judges, she was confident and composed.

Stuart dentist creates smiles, lessens anxiety By Shelley Koppel Staff writer
decay and gum disease is a lot easier than treating it. It’s also better for overall health. “It’s the simplest things,” he said. “Eat a nutritious diet with fruits, vegetables and adequate protein. Have lots of fluids. Our diets have way too much carbs, sugars and processed foods. “Spend enough time brushing and flossing. You need to spend three minutes brushing. See your dentist at least twice a year. Periodontal disease is so prevalent that a good many should see the dentist even more. We have a lot of avenues to treat periodontal disease, but what they do at home has a big influence on health.”
STUART — There is a grand piano in Dr. Michael Sohl’s dental office. It’s a player piano that plays music to soothe the most anxious of patients. Occasionally, a patient will sit down at the piano, hit the keys and sing. “We try to do everything we can to make patients relax,” Dr. Sohl said. “It is well-documented that relaxed patients are easier to treat and those who are relaxed tend to do much better. The anesthesia lasts longer and we are able to do more in an appointment.” That latter benefit is important because it means that patients make fewer visits to the dentist. It’s more efficient for everyone. Dr. Sohl and his team stress the importance of preventive care, but the office’s emphasis is on the placing and restoring of dental implants. “This is not your typical dentistry office,” Dr. Sohl said. “In most situations, the implant is done by one doctor and the restoration by another. From the patient’s point of view, (having it done at one office) simplifies things quite a lot.” Of course, Dr. Sohl reminds patients that preventing tooth

Dr. Sohl said that dentistry has changed a great deal in his 30 years in practice. “There been an improvement in the material,” he said. “The bonding agents are really good at bonding porcelain to the teeth. The digital age happened. X-rays are digitally generated and we make digital impressions. That’s had a big impact on implant placement. When I started, there was no dental CT scan. It allows us to be precise in diagnosis, treatment, planning and placement of implants.” For those accustomed to old-fashioned dentures, implants are a great step forward. “Dentures are like a rotary phone,” he said. “The gums got sore and they moved around. The implants are ti-
tanium cylinders that are placed in the jawbone. You can do one tooth or a full set of teeth. They work because the body senses the bone is wounded and makes bone that traps the titanium the tooth is attached to. The implant foundation is secure.” Dr. Sohl also does cosmetic and restorative dentistry and he is as meticulous in the planning as in the execution. “The key thing is to evaluate the facial profile and nuances of the person to make sure the restoration fits the mouth,” he said. “The smile should look like theirs.” He also uses Botox and fillers, particularly for the creases that develop around the mouth. For Dr. Sohl, the practice of dentistry is still challenging. “In the almost 30 years I’ve been practicing, it gets more exciting every year. There are a lot of new things. Patients need to do homework. They should have a consultation, even to pick a dentist. They should be able to talk to the dentist and understand the services,” he said. “S” Corporation Shareholder? • Earlier this year the IRS affirmed its authority to re-characterize distributions as salary for shareholder-employees of S corporations. • If your CPA or tax advisor has you taking a salary which is only a fraction of your total distributions you could be facing huge tax liabilities, penalties and interest. • If you are not paying yourself what the IRS considers “reasonable compensation” IRS will say you are intentionally avoiding employment taxes and they could be right. • We will review your situation at no cost or obligation.

mentioned above are certainly not insignificant, they also aren’t the key determinants of investors’ success. While these types of stories dominate the headlines, they also tend to obscure some of the factors that frequently do play a bigger role in the investment world. And right now, these factors are actually somewhat encouraging. Consider the following: The economy continues to grow. The economy isn’t going “gangbusters,” but it is growing. And thanks to historically low interest rates, consumer debt payments have dropped significantly, leaving people with more money to spend elsewhere. Typically, this higher spending tends to contribute to future economic growth. Corporate earnings remain solid. Many companies have shown strong earnings over the past couple of years — and earnings tend to be a key driver of stock prices. When their earnings

n Europe, the financial crisis drags on. China’s economic growth has slowed from “wow” to “ho-hum.” Here at home, we’ve seen heated political debates over taxes, spending and deficit reduction. Taken together, these
factors have created a “fog of uncertainty” that has left many investors in the dark about their next moves. But is this “fog” really impenetrable — or can you, as an individual investor, see through it to a place of clarity? To do so, you first need to realize that while the events

CHAPOGAS from page 8 held by the public — which means that even if profits remain the same, the earnings per share should increase. Stocks are still attractively priced. As measured by the price-to-earnings ratio, stocks are still priced relatively well. While no one can predict stock market performance, this may be a good buying opportunity. Of course, all these indicators of today’s investment environment can change over time; at some point, they may well be not so positive. But if you truly want to see through the fog of uncertainty that always develops with unsettling political or economic news, you’ll want to follow these basic, “all-weather”

guidelines: • Stay diversified. A diversified portfolio can help protect you from the harshest effects of market volatility. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification, can’t guarantee profits or protect against loss.) • Rebalance your portfolio. Over time, your investment mix can shift, even without your intent. For example, some of your holdings can appreciate so much in value that they take on a greater percentage of your portfolio than you had intended. That’s why it’s important to periodically rebalance your portfolio so that it fits your investment objectives and risk tolerance. • Stay focused on the long term. When confronted with short-term market fluctuations or scary headlines, many people
overreact and make ill-advised investment decisions. You can avoid these behaviors by staying focused on the long term. Invest in companies that are charting their own course. When investing for the equity portion of your portfolio, look for companies with the ability to prosper in all economic environments. With patience and perseverance, and by focusing on the key factors outlined above, you can navigate the fog of uncertainty and concentrate on your long-term investment goals. So don’t be afraid to “set sail.” Jamie Chapogas is a financial advisor with Edward Jones, 2200 S.W. Town Center Way in Palm City. A crown jewel in the area’s community chest is getting a fresh shine as a new group of officers at the Palm City Civic Organization reaches out to residents. The organization has long been a hidden treasure, with a 63-year-old classic meeting hall on 34th Street just off Cornell. The newly-elected board has a goal of expanding membership, its services and its public profile. “We’re kind of off the beaten path,” said treasurer Pauline Becker. “People who have lived here for years sometimes aren’t aware that we’re here.” The nonprofit organization makes its 1,500-square-foot facility available to private, civic, community and political groups for a fraction of the cost of comparable public facilities. “We set our rates based on what we really need to cover our operating costs,” said secretary Kathie Smith. “Anybody can rent it. We don’t discriminate against anyone.” The building is immaculately clean with shining Miami/Dade pine ceilings that belie the fact that they were installed during the Truman administration. Becker and Smith said the structure, with small kitchen facilities, was appropriate for a variety of group activities including weddings, christenings, showers, graduation parties, exercise, art and adult education classes, garden clubs, political, religious and conservation groups, card and bingo parties and rummage sales.
“We want to start a community garden and we’re starting to clear out some of the exotics that grow here. We want to create a place where people in the community can plant and tend to their vegetables and flowers.”

After her presentation, there will be a question and answer session and comments from the audience. Frank Valente, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast, said, “We are
sponsoring the Animal Welfare Summit because our community should have an opportunity to hear about planned legislation impacting animal welfare. Our humane society and all of the co-sponsoring organizations work every day to provide humane care for animals in need in our area. We are pleased to provide this forum to other concerned groups and individuals along the Treasure Coast.” Co-sponsors for this event are the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County, Dogs and Cats Forever, Florida Trac Thoroughbred Retirement and Adoptive Care Program, Nala’s New Life Rescue, Mastiff Rescue of Florida and the Hobe Sound Animal Protection League. The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast is a private, nonprofit humane agency caring for more than 6,500 animals a year and relies solely on private donations. It has no affiliation with the Humane Society of the United States. Use of the library meeting rooms does not imply library endorsement of the aims, policies, or activities of any group using the room.

Highlights from 2012 ‘Dancing with the Martin Stars’
Last year, Scripps Treasure Coast Newspaper columnist Eve Samples won “Best Overall” with her flawless footwork in the Argentine Tango, and Tom Hall with Seacoast Bank won “Overall Fundraiser” after raising more than $16,000. Dr. Ed Lippsich of Lippisch and Engebretsen Oral Surgery and Dental Implants impressed the crowd with the Samba and helped raise more than $12,000. “While it was definitely a big commitment of time, it was so worth it! It was very rewarding to be part of such a fun, well produced event while raising money for a really important purpose,” Lippisch said. In 2012, the event raised more than $45,000 and brought in a crowd of more than 400 people who became better connected to the mission of Martin County Healthy Start through the event. ARE YOU READY FOR LAORETTI?
s p i T f l o G ’s y r r a L of the Week The punch shot is basically used in cross winds or winds that blow into your face or the direction you are hitting. Most players try to hit the punch with a very hard swing which will cause the ball to go higher. You should take one club more and swing slower putting less spin on the ball. A couple of keys hitting low shots – 1. Position the ball towards the back foot. 2. Keep club going back low to the ground and finish with the club low to the ground. Remember low to low keeps ball flight low. High to high keeps the ball high.
More tips to follow in coming weeks.

We’re just flying out to Stuart to do this. It’s really for our audience at the Lyric and it’s not going anywhere else. I start back at Branson on March 12, getting the new company in.” Lord said that Lyric audiences have always been very honest about what they like and don’t like. “We’re out of Dallas, but audiences in Stuart think of it as their show,” he said. “I listen to them.” While the other shows have always had a storyline and elaborate sets and costumes, the music has always been the focus. That’s true for this show, as well. “It’s always been about the singing,” Lord said. “It’ll be funny and a lot more intimate. It will like a ‘Night at the Improv’ with a whole lot of music. There’ll be a lot less talking and a lot more music.” John Loesser is thrilled to have the group in Stuart. “We are excited to have the Rednecks back again,” he said. “This time, it’s unplugged and they’re doing what they do best, singing.” 3 Redneck Tenors: Unplugged, comes to the Lyric Theatre, 59 S.W. Flagler Ave., Stuart, on March 2-3. Performances are March 2 at 4 and 8 p.m. and March 3 at 3 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $40. Call the box office at (772) 286-7827 or order online at www. lyrictheatre.com. For more information about 3 Redneck Tenors, visit the website, www.3rednecktenors.com.

the four Redneck Tenor shows, including Broadway and opera favorites and some things audiences have come to expect, like the greatest television theme songs. Lord promises some surprises, as well. Part of the impetus for this show came from a performance in Branson, Mo., when the power went out. “The audiences held up lights from the phones,” Lord said. “We all have operatic training. For the first 28 years of my career, I didn’t use microphones. We sang a cappella to flashlight. Classical training makes a difference, and I decided to go back to what I did for 28 years.” Lord has been busy with the show in Branson and with a new Redneck Tenor show he’s writing for 2014. “We’re never going to get serious, but it’s a little more virtuosic,” he said. The boys have been in Branson for awhile, and Lord is putting a show that will stay in Branson. Then the group hits the road for several months, starting in September. First, though, there’s a stop in Stuart. “The Lyric was one of the first theaters that took us,” Lord said. “We debuted the Broadway show at the Lyric. John is wonderful and he has been pushing for this (concert) for a couple of years.

Dr. Michael Sohl is “The Gold Standard” on the Treasure Coast
nO anxiEty • nO pain • nO StrESS
Imagine actually looking forward to a dental appointment. Imagine coming out of your dental visit relaxed and refreshed. Dr. Michael Sohl and his expert team have brought dentistry innovation and your comfort to a whole new level, providing gentle sleep for all implant, cosmetic, and general dentistry. From the simplest to the most sophisticated dental procedures. Performed with expertise, delivered with a deep commitment to personal attention and caring.
Are Dental Implants Right for You?
Now, you have more options. Implant-retained dentures are permanent, and they look, feel, and function like natural teeth. You can smile and eat without fear of slippage. You can go to sleep at night and wake up in the morning with your teeth in place.

Dr. Sohl is on the forefront of implant placement. He has a dental CAT scan unit on premises for computer guided implant placement protocols for Nobel Biocares All-on Four/Teeth in a DayTM procedures. All-on-Four/Teeth in a DayTM was developed to minimize the number of implants required to anchor a complete set of dentures. A full arch can be replaced with four implants in a single visit, as opposed to as many as eight implants and multiple office visits.
