PALM CITY — The Chamber of Commerce is starting up community town hall meetings on Wednesday, March 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. “As we go forward and things change, I wanted to give people the chance to have their say,” Niki Norton, president of the chamber, said. “The town hall gives everyone the same playing

Among the expected panelists are Martin County Commissioner John Haddox, the county’s community development director, Kevin Freeman, and Michael DiTerlizzi, former commissioner and now School Board member.

And it’s not like the extra 32 trains will quietly make their ways through the county every day if the company’s plans are realized. The rail tracks they’ll use cross a bridge over the St. Lucie River, and freight trains will continue to cross there, too. That’s a very important bridge. Normally it’s left open so river

Magician makes fire safety magical Shelley Koppel Staff writer

PALM CITY — Jack Durjan fought fires for the United States Air Force and, for 25 years, as a Martin County firefighter. Some 25 years ago, the Lake Worth native became fascinated by magic. A tragedy turned the fascination into a lifelong vocation. Durjan was called to a car crash in which someone was killed. He didn’t get home until 2:30 a.m. and he couldn’t sleep. He turned on the Home Shopping Network, where the host was talking to a magician and selling magic sets. “I ordered one and started working with different tricks,” he said. “I also taught fire and safety at elementary schools and churches and started using the art of illusion. You can have fun and learn life-saving ideas through the art of magic.” Durjan said that teachers were skeptical that he’d last more than 10 minutes. “I said I needed 30 and it never failed me,” he said. “I began teaching the teachers how to do

FREE Clinical Hearing Evaluation No Obligation - No High Pressure sales Tactics We Just Want To Help You Hear Better. After 22 years in Law Enforcement Joe decided to refocus his career path. Joe knew he would need to be involved in helping people and searched for a new career that would allow him to move in that direction. After some considerable research Joe decided to move forward in the hearing healthcare field. After Joe completed his training and schooling he ended his highly decorated career in Law Enforcement and retired from the St. Lucie County Sheriff ’s Office. Joe was licensed in 2002 by the State of Florida as a Hearing Aid Specialist and opened his first practice in St. Lucie West in 2003 and today, continues to help people as he has done his entire professional career. Tammy, in her career as a professional care giver, had seen far too many times the heartbreak of hearing loss. How the loss would impact not just the patient but the loved ones around them as well. Joe worked, went to school, studied and became a Florida State Licensed Hearing Aid Specialist. He knew that improving and restoring hearing to those in need would become his passion and his quest. He also knew that he could think of no one he would rather tackle this challenge with then his trusted best friend, Tammy. Today and for the past 11 years Mutters Hearing Center has been giving back the gift of hearing to friends and neighbors from around the Treasure Coast.
Joe Mutter and his patient care coordinator /Tammy Shearer Carpenter
Please Read what Richard Hallett has to say. My doctor sent me to Joe for my hearing loss. At first I was a little concerned because I have heard so many negative things about hearing aids and I was not all that excited about my visit to Mutter’s Hearing Center. Nonetheless I went to see Joe, from the moment I walked in the door I was made to feel at home by Tammy who met me and walked me through some very simple paperwork I had to fill out. Joe did a very complete hearing test and I decided to get hearing aids from him. After Joe explained my options I decided to get myself good hearing aids. It was after that, when I found out that the people that had gotten hearing aids somewhere else were fooled by the come on ads and bought the cheap hearing aids that were the ones that they complained about how they didn’t work and just made things louder. Joe spent quite a bit of time with me to help me understand my hearing loss and I love my new hearing aids that I got from Joe. I cannot thank my doctor enough for sending me to Joe!

I tell them fire doesn’t care who you are. The bills disappear. If you practice fire prevention, I say, ‘You really didn’t lose it,’ and pull them out from behind the ear.” Durjan teaches more than fire safety. He also talks about poison safety, playground safety, gun safety and stranger danger. Illusion is particularly useful in teaching the latter to younger children “It’s amazing how kids adapt to it so well,” he said. “I have them look at a picture of a frog and I wave a piece of silk in front of it. It becomes a picture of a horse. Durjan also works with those with special needs, including the developmentally disabled. He works with therapists using a program, Project Magic, developed by magician David Copperfield for head trauma patients. It helps to stimulate the brain and aids in physical dexterity and coordination as well as self-esteem. Durjan is a member of the Don Lea Assembly of the Society of American Magicians, based in Stuart. The group meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month at the St. Lucie Lanes in Port St. Lucie. Meetings begin at 7 p.m. with the discussion of a special magic trick, and then, after a short business meeting, members work on their own styles of magic and get constructive criticism from their peers. Members range in age from teens to 85. Durjan noted that magic and magicians have a storied history. “It’s the world’s oldest fraternity,” he said. TREASURE COAST — A gaping hole remains in the hearts of the Morales family. The ache in their cores hasn’t dulled with days
passed. It’s just as agonizing as the day their husband, father, brother, uncle and son was violently ripped away from them a year ago today. The brother of slain Sherriff’s Sgt. Gary Morales said the old adage “time heals all wounds” is false. The searing pain hasn’t quelled one bit. “Maybe because I’m the older brother and I’ve seen my brothers

come into our lives – my three brothers grow up to be young men – so for me, it’s been very hard. The pain is still there as if it happened yesterday,” said Brian Morales, the eldest of his four brothers. The only way for the elder Morales brother to feel a sense of normalcy is to banish his younger sibling from his mind. “As selfish as it sounds, the only way to cope with it is I don’t think about Gary,” Brian Morales said. “I try not to think about him and that’s the only way I can cope with it right now.” The family’s agony began on Feb. 28, 2013 when Sgt. Gary Morales, a married father of two called in a traffic stop near Oleander Avenue. “And so he’s taking off on me.” Those are among the last words Sgt. Gary Morales, 35, said to dispatchers minutes before he was gunned down in broad daylight. The sheriff’s sergeant radioed in the stop and pursuit on a maroon, late-model Toyota Corolla near Oleander Avenue at 9:28 a.m. According to dispatch chatter, 1 minute and 57 seconds later, shots were fired on Naylor Terrace. Morales, who was seated in his patrol cruiser, gun still holstered, was fatally wounded. He was shot in the side of the head, neck and arm. Morales died on that dirt road, where a small tribute of dusty flowers and a flag still stands today. Brian Morales mustered up the
strength to visit the hallowed ground. “It was just emptiness and still disbelief that my brother’s last moments were on that road at that location,” Brian Morales said. St. Lucie County Sherriff Ken Mascara also made the emotional trip. “We had someone very close to us pay the ultimate sacrifice right there at that very location. I feel somewhat angered by the fact that someone in that community actually was the suspect who did that … I also have an appreciation that someone continues, almost one year later, to put little trinkets and little flowers.” The man from the community who unleashed a string of bullets at point-blank range on the sheriff’s deputy, who according to police reports, had no time to react is Fort Pierce resident Eriese Tisdale, 26. Tisdale, who is awaiting trial in a Martin County jail is facing the death penalty in Morales’ death. Tisdale said the shooting was self-defense during police interrogation the day of the shooting. Tisdale, a convicted felon stemming from a 2010 drug charge, had a gun in the car and was driving on a suspended license. Evidence also suggests Tisdale may have been selling crack to a homeless man minutes before the stop.

Public defender and Tisdale’s attorney Diamond Litty said she can’t speculate when Tisdale’s trial will begin. On behalf of her client, Litty declined an interview with Your Voice News & Views. Brian Morales said he has found it in his soul to forgive his brother’s killer. Other family members have, too. “There is forgiveness there. We are Christians we do not want to teach our children hate ... Immediately we wanted people to know there was forgiveness for such a heinous, unspeakable act,” Brian Morales said. “At the same time, people need to understand there is anger and a lot of sadness and a great sorrow over family events we’ve had this past year.” Holidays were especially hard for Gary Morales’ two young daughters Brooklynn and Jordan, but the two stay connected to their father in a special spiritual way, Brian said. “When they speak about their father, it’s like they’re having a two-way conversation from heaven down to wherever they are,” Brian said. “They’ll say ‘Oh yeah I showed daddy my dress,’ they basically speak as if their daddy is in another country and they can speak to him at any time.” Brian Morales said life just isn’t the same without his younger brother’s presence. When asked what he misses the most about his brother, he replied “Everything.” “Just being with him and his smile and his laugh. That laugh.” Mascara said he treasures every moment he shared with Gary Morales, especially one. During

Yarboro Center for the Performing Arts at Martin County High School. One of the featured authors will be Mary E. Dawson, whose debut novel “The River Way Home” is a historical adventure set in Martin County in 1914, the year the city of Stuart was created. It tells the fictional tale of three young teens, a Cracker boy, a young Seminole, and an African-American girl who lose their boat in a storm on Lake Okeechobee, have a run-in with John Ashley and his gang, and make their way down the St. Lucie River by dugout canoe to Stuart and the Gilbert”s Bar House of Refuge. Using a wealth of old photographs, government studies and magazine articles, Dawson takes readers back in time in Martin County; canvassing the land and legends, capturing the essence of real people and their inspirational stories. “Every character and every adventure in the story is based on something I’ve read about or seen in person,” Dawson said, “and readers tell me they particularly enjoy the fact that I’ve included a section of old photos and short historical essays revealing real people and events along the Treasure Coast that inspired them.” As part of the Stuart Centennial Celebration, Dawson will also be giving an expanded presentation of local history, called “Alligators!

Negron: Army Corps shouldn’t have all the say Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer

TREASURE COAST —Who should control the dirty Lake Okeechobee water once precipitation begins to fall in May and the flood gates need unleashing? In a Feb. 18 letter, Florida State Senator Joe Negron, R-Stuart, chair of the Senate Select Committee on the Indian River Lagoon and Lake Okeechobee Basin, called on Florida’s Congressional Delegation to push for federal legislation to remove the Army Corps of Engineers’ sole jurisdiction over Lake Okeechobee releases and to include authorization of the C-43 Reservoir project in the federal Water Resources Development Act of 2014, also known as WRDA. “Over the last few months, the Army Corps has demonstrated a willingness to be more proactive and coordinate with the South Florida Water Management District to manage lake levels. This experience demonstrates the state water managers and the Army Corps can work effectively together,” Negron wrote. “However, the fact remains the Army Corps has sole ju-

MORALES from page A7 painfully noticeable. “He was such an integral part of a lot of things that went on in the office. He was a member of the SWAT team, he was a very big member of our training unit, plus he was a road sergeant,” Mascara said. “We, as an office, got to see him quite a bit, and he had an infectious smile and every time you saw him, he had that smile.” “In this last year, we just don’t see him anymore. It’s a great loss for the office.” For his ultimate sacrifice, Sgt. Gary Morales will always be remembered in the hearts and minds of those who knew of him as a dedicated father and honest law enforcement officer. Sometime before Law Enforcement Memorial Week in May, Sgt. Gary Morales’ name will be permanently etched on the Florida’s Sheriffs Law Enforcement Memorial Wall in Tallahassee and the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., Mascara said. Once the Sheriff’s Office finishes constructing a memorial wall of its own, Gary Morales will be memorialized there, too. The Sheriff’s Office will have a private luncheon for the Morales family on Feb. 28. No public events have been scheduled.

Secret Gardens Tour kick-off gala is March 5 FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
The Secret Gardens Tour kickoff gala is sponsored by Sandhill Cove Retirement Living. This charitable event is on Wednesday, March 5 from 5– 7 p.m. Attendees will savor on elegant hors d’oeuvres, while enjoying a brief presentation from county commissioners John Haddox and Sarah Heard.
TOWN HALL from page A1 Norton will moderate the discussion that’s expected to include discussions about proposed construction on Mapp Road. “I feel like if we have more informed people in our community we can get more support, get more done,” Norton said. Haddox said he’s excited that the chamber is starting a series of town hall meetings, and he plans to attend them to hear Palm City residents’ concerns. He was planning on doing some, however Haddox said it’s better for the chamber to host them than him. “Success will be determined by how it is ran,” Haddox said. “If it becomes the growth-no-growth thing, it will be a disaster.” Turns out that the chamber has done town hall meetings before, Carolyn Davi, the chamber’s executive director, said. “We did them probably about 15, 16 years ago,” Davi said. “What we did them on at that point was about the (then proposed) bridge, Veterans Memorial Bridge. To

bring people up to date on what was happening with it. They were very well received.” Norton said with the opening of the new bridge it’s more important than ever that Palm City maintain an identity and personality. She said that the chamber seemed well positioned to help residents do that. “I felt the chamber should reach out to the community as well,” Norton said. She hopes some large community events originate in the town hall meetings. “I eventually see Mapp Road becoming our midway (for a parade or block party), being closed down perhaps,” Norton said. She added, “I think people would stay on our side of the bridge if there was more to do.” The next town hall is scheduled for April 9. The chamber’s web site is www. palmcitychamber.com. For more about the town hall meetings, follow the chamber’s Facebook page, or call Davi at (772) 2868121.

PALM CITY — It’s not your imagination. There’s less traffic on Mapp Road between Martin Highway and Martin Downs Boulevard since the Veterans Memorial Bridge opened in December. That is a reduction from about 13,500 trips a day on that stretch of road to 11,000. But, Lisa Wichser, Martin County’s development review administrator, said that traffic is up on Martin Highway by about 40 percent between Mapp and High Meadows Avenue. Traffic counts done after the opening of the Veterans Memorial Bridge show patterns generally similar to what traffic engineers expected. Wichser said that motorists take about 16,200 trips a day over the new bridge. That’s far fewer for now than what the Florida Department of Transportation projected — about 25,800 trips a day over the bridge the first year it’s open. “My feeling is the reason is because once you’re on the Palm City side of that bridge, you’re down to a two-lane road,” Wichser said. “Right now, that’s backing up.” Wichser isn’t speaking just as a traffic engineer. She lives on the west side of the St. Lucie River, and works on the east side. “I come in (to work) on the Veterans Memorial Bridge and go

home on the Palm City Bridge for that reason,” she said. “I don’t think I’m the only person doing that.” Martin Highway from the new bridge to Mapp Road is four lanes. That expansion was part of the about $120 million roadand-bridge construction. Wichser said there’re few roads motorists divert onto between the bridge and Mapp, causing a bottleneck when Martin goes to two lanes at that intersection. Complicating the matter is Hidden Oaks Middle School, 2801 S.W. Martin Highway, which has about 1,100 students. Wichser said the school’s student hours, 9:06 a.m. to 3:55 p.m. coincide poorly with traditional peak traffic hours, about 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. and 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. The FDOT plans to start expanding Martin Highway somewhere between the spring and summer of this year. Betsy Jeffers, design project manager, said in previous interviews the proposed widening will continue in portions until at least 2017. The county’s Community Redevelopment Agency is also eyeing roadwork on Mapp that’s likely to start in 2015. While the traffic on Veterans Memorial is falling short of expectations, its opening has fulfilled one promise — to ease traffic on the Palm City Bridge. Wichser said between Jan. 9 and Feb. 5

Fish with lesion stirs concerns, but didn’t make it to lab Patrick McCallister Staff writer
pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com
PALM CITY — News that a local fisherman caught a sheepshead fish with a large lesion in Bessey Creek earlier this month got a lot of folks talking about 1998. That’s a year many remember for innumerable sick and dying fish in the St. Lucie River. Indeed, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission had verified reports of 17 fish with lesions in Palm City that year. Science eventually pinned Army Corps of Engineers’ discharges of nutrient-rich water into the river system as the likely culprit.
“We were sending them all kinds of samples of (fish with lesions) in ‘98,” Mark Perry, executive director of the Florida Oceanographic Society, said. The commission runs the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, St. Petersburg. That lab investigates diseased and mysteriously dead fish, among other things. The recently-caught diseased fish never made its way to that lab for analysis to see what caused its lesions, said Catalina Brown, fish kill hotline coordinator at the commission. “This sample never made it to our lab,” Brown said. “We saw a Facebook post of the fish with a tumor on it.”

risdiction and authority over lake levels and acts within that authority even when those actions conflict with the state water managers’ better judgment. We need your help to permanently and officially rebalance this delegation of responsibility and authority.” Negron contended that the Corps’ authority derived from Congress, is failing to maintain the dike. The water release schedule is also a failure to the Treasure Coast’s estuaries, human health in the area and the economy. Negron also called on Congress to designate funds to repair the dike and set aside more money for vital water projects in Florida. “With the wet season scheduled to begin in just a few months, federal action is needed to address several recommendations designed to better manage lake levels, regulatory releases and water quality,” Negron said. Would the state drown under such responsibility if Negron’s request is granted? “Until the South Florida Water Management District comes out and says that they can handle and afford to manage the lake, I don’t think we should be moving one problem from here to another,” U.S Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Jupiter said during a scheduled appearance at Nature Fest in Fort Pierce on Feb. 22. “Unfortunately, they agree with that schedule.” Nyla Pipes of One Florida Foundation has some doubts “I would want to look at how. I would want to look at the plan. I have some reservations,” Pipes said. “I’m concerned that it’s an opportunity to take charge as a state when things are good, but shove the blame back to the Army Corps when they’re not.” Don Voss, of One Florida Foundation said it’s an option that needs to be further explored. “I don’t think we could do a worse job … the Army Corps was asked to come into Florida in the late 1920s by a referendum. They don’t seem to be doing their job very well,” Voss said. “I would suggest another referendum asking them to leave might be the way to go.” “And when we started shopping that idea around was the
first time they ever sat down and starting talking to us at the table.” St. Lucie County Commissioner Chris Dzadvosky shared some of Pipes’ reservations. “I think the state is qualified enough on the water quality side. My concern with the idea is who is going to pay to maintain (the dike) and fix it? It all will be in the nuts and bolts of the final agreement,” Dzadovsky said. “Will the federal government provide the funding over a 20 year period, 50 year period? Because I don’t think the state of Florida has that ability. That would be my first concern. And how that transfer occurs needs to be written in the details.” “If we fix the dike that changes everything,” he said. “We have to stop bringing water in from the north,” Dzadovsky said. “So stormwater treatment areas to the north and more lake storage has to be part of the big picture.” More federal funding is needed for dike improvements and Everglades restoration, including some projects north of the lake, Murphy said. Last week Murphy and U.S. Rep Tom Rooney, R-Okeechobee, drafted a letter to the United States Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works) Jo-Ellen Darcy in support of the Army Corps making the final policy decisions necessary for the Kissimmee River Restoration Project to be completed. “Once the Kissimmee River Restoration Project is complete, more than 40 square miles of the river’s floodplain ecosystem will be restored, including almost 20,000 acres of wetlands and 44 miles of historic river channel,” the letter read. “Additionally, the project has the potential to add 100,000 acre feet of storage to the watershed, which will help alleviate water flows into Lake Okeechobee by raising the levels of Lakes Kissimmee, Cypress and Hatchinehaw another 1.5 feet. The project also maintains the flood reduction benefits of the original Kissimmee River channeling,” the letter read. “What that will do is help slow down the rate in which the water from Orlando gets to the lake, so that ratio doesn’t fill up so quickly, so they can manage and better predict,” Murphy said.

ABOARD from page A1 traffic can pass through. It closes to let trains pass. Generally, trains and boats can’t pass at the same time. Darrell Brand — Palm Cove Golf & Yacht Club Marina Committee member — said local boating is suffering greatly from Army Corps of Engineers discharges of nutrient-rich waters from Lake Okeechobee and other stresses. He said All Aboard Florida could drive it to near extinction, because the bridge closings will frequently block a major water thoroughfare for most boats.
“That bridge is right at the intersection of the North Fork and South Fork of the (St. Lucie River) there,” Brand said. “This bridge, it’s not a very tall bridge. The only thing that fit under it is an inflatable dingy.” Palm City resident K.C. Traylor started a Facebook page opposing All Aboard Florida. It’s named Florida Not All Aboard. Additionally, she’s involved with an online petition against the proposed rail at www.change.org, and an opposition web site, www.floridanotallaboard.com. She said opposition to the proposed passenger rail service is widespread.

“We launched (the petition) this Friday afternoon, and we’re already up to 300 signatures on (change.org),” Traylor said. At press time, the online petition had about 550 signatures. Brand’s is among them. Kim DeLaney, spokeswoman, said the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council generally approves of more passenger rail, but has some heartburn over All Aboard Florida’s proposals. “What’s been suggested by the company is high-speed express service with limited stations, which by definition is limited access for Treasure Coast resi-

dents,” she said. DeLaney said the company claims it can open and close the train bridge crossing the St. Lucie, beside the Roosevelt Bridge in Stuart, in less than 15 minutes. Haddox, Brand and others are skeptical about that claim. DeLaney said even going with best-case numbers, the planning council still sees problems with the extra train traffic. “All Aboard Florida has indicated it takes about 14 minutes each time that bridge is closed,” she

Pastels with a Twist
FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
On Wednesday, March 12, the Palm City Art Associates will introduce its third professional artistic presenter of the 2014 season. Deborah LaFogg-Docherty comes all the way from Boynton Beach to present “Pastels with a Twist.” Even if you’re not a pastel artist, you won’t want to miss this demonstration in which LaFogg-Docherty explores different forms of underpainting, application techniques, and illustrates how light, color, contrast, composition, texture, and especially ATMOSPHERE make any painting in any medium luminous and breath-taking. LaFogg-Docherty’s art combines her two great loves: her love of nature and her love of painting. She studies then paints wildlife in its natural habitat to give viewers a realistic and empathetic glimpse of how animals live in the wild, raise their young, court and survive. Her quest has taken her across the United States from the Everglades National Park in Florida all the way to Denali National Park in Alaska to depict the
secret world of wildlife that most people never get a chance to see. Although Deb paints with acrylics and oils, a trip to Paris to see Degas’ Impressionistic paintings first-hand reminded her why she loves the pastels so much. Visit deb-lafoggdocherty.artistwebsites.com or simply Google images of Deborah LaFogg-Docherty to see her stunning realistic portrayals of our wildlife world. She paints anything and everything found in nature, running the gamut from underwater turtles, turkeys, wolves, white-tailed deer, and herons to pet kittens, dogs, and horses — even lions and tigers and giraffes. For those readers familiar with this author’s artwork, you will understand why her spoonbill painting, “Pink Wings Over the Everglades” and “The Flirt Painting” of a parrot are my personal favorites. LaFogg-Docherty is a signature member of Artists for Conservation and of the Pastel Society of America, received the Masters Circle award from the International Association of Pastel Societies, and is also a member of Oil Painters of Amer-

TRAFFIC from page A14 in 2013 the traffic on the Palm City Bridge exceeded its capacity. Veterans Memorial has Palm City Bridge back to acceptable traffic. “The average there was 46,670 (trips a day). That’s on average, including weekends. In 2014 for that same period, it’s 35,115.” A four-lane bridge is at its capacity when it nears 40,000 trips a day on it. The second span of the Palm City Bridge, which took it from two to four lanes, opened in 1991. Terry Rauth, deputy county engineer, said planning for the Veterans Memorial Bridge started shortly after the Palm City Bridge hit about 43,000 trips a day. That was in 1996, about five years after the four-laning was done. On the eastern side of the Palm City Bridge, the stretch of Monterey Road from the bridge to Kanner Highway, dropped from about 27,500 trips a day to 24,500. Additional trips across the Palm City Bridge originate on Old Palm City Road, Stuart. Also affected by the opening of Veterans Memorial is High Meadows. Wichser said the stretch between Martin Highway and Martin Downs has had about a 14 percent reduction in traffic.

FISH from page A15 To Ann Forstchem, biologist, that tumor looked familiar. “This is a blast from the past,” Forstchem said. “I was involved in a diseased-fish investigation in the late ‘90s.” Yes, she’s talking about the St. Lucie River sick-fish investigation. Fortstchem said without study it’s impossible to know whether the recently-found diseased sheepshead was a victim of polluted waters. She said there are numerous causes of lesions. “One lesioned fish does not make the whole estuary sick,” Fortstchem said. Perry agreed. However, he said there have been at least eight large events of fish with lesions in the St. Lucie in memory, and they struck more than 30 kinds of fish. “If it’s an isolated incident, then

you say, ‘Well, let’s keep our eyes open,’” Perry said. However, Perry said he wished that the fisherman had experts investigate the diseased sheepshead. His tip to others if they catch diseased fish? “They should freeze that fish, put it on ice, and send it to Ann Forstchem,” he said. “If they start catching more of them, bag them up and send them to the lab.” Brown said the more information the commission has about what causes diseased fish, the better the state can respond to human-made problems. “If we don’t get the samples and we don’t get the calls, we can’t have that data,” she said. “Even if it’s one fish once in a while, we don’t get the data.” To report visibly sick or mysteriously-dead fish, call (800) 6360511, or visit research.myfwc. com/fishkill/submit.asp.

Nino’s adds a generous portion of fun to every dish Staff writer
pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com
STUART — There’s an ingredient no restaurant can buy or sell, but it’s the most important for them to flavor every dish with. Fun. I headed to Nino’s Italian Cucina & Pizzeria Café with my girlfriend, Lisa Cody, expecting Italian food. Perhaps I’m a bit restaurant jaded; the thought of finding fun on the menu didn’t much cross my mind. Lots of restaurants seem to try to artificially generate fun. That doesn’t work. Fun is a mysterious quality that can’t be canned, only fostered. Nino’s owner, Gaetano “Guy” D’Anna, took a few minutes to talk with us before we started entrees. We found out that Guy started working in the restaurant business when he was a teenager. That was in the late ‘70s. His is a real American success story about finding and pursuing a passion to success. “I’ve done everything in the restaurant business,” Guy told us. Starting with bussing tables and washing dishes. Before long, Guy
was making pizzas and waiting on customers. He spent as much time in the kitchen as he could those days. “I always wanted to be the best waiter, so I went back to the kitchen to watch them (prepare food), and learned every ingredient,” he said. While we were talking, stuffed mushrooms with tomato, parmesan cheese, eggplant and peppers flavored with Marsala wine arrived, along with a plate of mozzarella caprese with tomato and a delicious dressing. Ah, the dressing. There’s a story behind that. “I (first) made the dressing by mistake,” Guy told us. A happy accident. It’s become the Brooklyn Guy’s Original Creamy Balsamic Dressing, and finds its ways to several of Nino’s dishes. While Lisa and I sampled the entrees, Connie Tracy and Chris Sheppard got our attention. They were sitting nearby. The two traveled from Port St. Lucie where they’d first tried Nino’s. The restaurant opened there in 2008. It needed more space, so moved to Stuart where it could open a pizzeria and bar, too.

NINO’S from page B1
Gaetano “Guy” D’Anna enjoys laughs with customers at Nino’s Italian Cucina & Pizzeria Café, Stuart.
Connie was enjoying a plate of the lobster ravioli, with its generous garnishment of tomato, onion and vodka sauce. Chris was enjoying the shrimp francese. When they’d noticed me writing and taking pictures, the two wanted to rave about Nino’s. At the heart of their praise was that word: “fun.” I headed to the pizzeria with Guy to see Gaetano Traina making a Brooklyn Guy Original with mushrooms, bacon, banana peppers and, of course, that Brooklyn Guy’s Original Creamy Balsamic Dressing. When I got back to the table more than ready for a bit of that pizza, Lisa was smiling. While I was gone, the woman who’d minutes earlier been dedicated to retaining her dislike for seafood tried the clams casino with bacon, pepper, eggplant and pancetta. “I had a clam,” she told me. “First one in my entire life. It was good.” Not long after, Lisa sampled the lobster ravioli. “This is amazing,” she said. Being a guy, I had to go for that pizza. Of course, what’s pizza without a great beer? Federico

NINO’S from page B2 Kou brought me a Samuel Adams Winter Lager with an orange slice from the Lion’s Den Bar. I found out that Federico worked at the original Nino’s in Brooklyn, New York. Guy’s father-in-law owned it. Federico started there about the same time Guy did. He followed Guy to Florida to keep working for the family. OK, the fun was starting to make sense. Guy’s pretty good at finding and keeping folks who want restaurant careers, then training them for as far as they want to go in the business. That’s
because he spends a lot of time at the restaurant. “This is my house,” he told Lisa and me. “When people come to your house, you want to have a good time.” Nino’s is at 2500 S.E. Federal Highway, Regency Square Plaza, in Stuart. It’s open Sundays to Mondays 3:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays to Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. On Fridays and Saturdays, it’s open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The phone is (772) 340-3800. Nino’s takes reservations for parties of four or more. Visit the website at www.ninosofstuart.com.

STUART — The musical “Curtains,” has an impressive pedigree. Based on an idea by Peter Stone, it has a book by Rupert Holmes, with music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb, the creative forces behind “Cabaret” and “Chicago.” As with other Kander and Ebb shows, this is set in the past, this time in 1959 Boston. While “Curtains” didn’t achieve the legendary Broadway success of those two classics, it won a Tony for David Hyde Pierce as police detective Frank Cioffi, a theater fan sent to solve the murder of the leading lady during an opening night curtain call. The Barn Theatre will present “Curtains” as its musical March 7-23. John Sayers, who is directing the show as well as performing in it, spoke recently about the production. “It’s a great show,” he said. “It’s absolutely hilarious, a funny, fall-down-in-the-aisles show. It’s a murder mystery musical and it’s a show-within-a show. A theater company is putting on out-of-town previews in Boston of ‘Robbin’ Hood.’ It’s a loose take-off on ‘Oklahoma,’ and the opening number is ‘Wide Open Spaces, ending by spelling out K-A-N-S-A-S. “On opening night, the star, Jessica Cranshaw, is murdered in front of everyone during the bows. It has to be said that no one misses her. She’s a faded star. They bring in Lieutenant Cioffi, who’s played by a familiar

face at the Barn, Tom Farley.” Tom Farley has appeared in area community theater for many years and Sayers is very pleased with his star. “In my opinion, Tom does it entirely differently from David Hyde Pierce,” he said. “You can like both or pick one or the other. I love Tom, but I’m prejudiced. One aspect of directing is that I can tell the cast, ‘Don’t go onto YouTube and look at the video. We want to see what you do with the part.’ My advice falls on deaf ears.” In addition to Farley, the cast of 20 includes Liz Elliott as Jessica Cranshaw, the victim; Althea Wilson as Carmen Bernstein, the hard-nosed New York producer; Tony Richards as Christopher Belling, the British producer; Mary Murphy as Georgia Hendricks, the lyricist who becomes the star when Cranshaw is murdered; and Sayers as Aaron Fox, Hendricks’ ex-husband and the composer of the show. Sayers said that the idea of a musical murder mystery is what drew him in. “It fascinated me,” he said. “I’ve done Agatha Christie, the typical murder mystery. I’ve never done a musical one. We’ve been in rehearsal for a month and we still haven’t figured out who did it.” Sayers said that the audience should expect to have a good time. “It’s a typical musical comedy out of the 1950s,” he said. “There’s a lot of singing and dancing and a lot of fun, despite the seriousness of two murders and

CURTAINS from page B9 two attempted murders. The dialogue is so well-written. I had a read-through at the beginning to get the laughter out so we could rehearse seriously. The dialogue is so funny and witty that they can’t help themselves.” At the end of the playbill, there is a note that tells the tale: ‘It’s okay to take your playbill home and show people the names and faces of our crew and cast.
But whatever you do, don’t reveal who killed who, or it might just be curtains for you.’ Consider yourself warned. The Barn Theatre, 2400 E. Ocean Blvd., Stuart, presents “Curtains” March 7 -23. IS ALL ABOARD FLORIDA 100% PRIVATELY FUNDED? NO All Aboard Florida applied for a federally guaranteed loan (RRIF) from the Federal Railroad Administration in March 2013. This is the same type of financing scheme that was behind the housing finance crisis that came tumbling down in 2008. Taxpayers would be left holding the bag when the RRIF loan goes into default. We ask if Amtrak is running just four trains per day from Miami to Orlando, how can All Aboard Florida justify 32 trips? How can this be viable? “No privately run train offering passenger service has operated successfully since the automobile became the main choice of travelers. Government typically helps pay for mass-transit systems because they are so expensive to build and operate.” - Orlando Sentinel, March 18, 2013 Why has Senator Brandes filed SB 642 bill on January 15, 2014 repealing the authority of the Auditor General to conduct audits of transportation corporations authorized under the Florida Transportation Corporation Act? If AAF is using taxpayer’s money for a loan, shouldn’t they be audited??? Is this a money grab from taxpayers?
Transportation Corporation Act General Bill
by Brandes Florida Transportation Corporation Act: Repealing a provision relating to the authority of the Auditor General to conduct audits of transportation corporations authorized under the Florida Transportation Corporation Act; repealing a provision relating to the type, structure, and income of an authorized transportation corporation; repealing a provision relating to the contract between the Department of Transportation and an authorized transportation corporation; repealing a provision relating to the board of directors and advisory directors of an authorized transportation corporation, etc.

WHAT IS ALL ABOARD FLORIDA? THIRTY-TWO passenger trains traveling daily from Miami to Orlando, through our towns, between 7:00 a.m.—11:00 p.m. There are no scheduled stops between West Palm Beach and Orlando! All Aboard Florida (AAF) will simply pass through our towns 32 times per day! Expect traffic congestion, noise pollution, as well as property values and access to the ocean from the west side of the bridge to be severely impacted.
