Golf legends come to town By Patrick Bernadeau For Your Voice News & Views PALM CITY — Some of the greatest athletes the sports universe has ever seen gathered on Super Bowl Sunday to compete against one another. However, the gathering wasn’t in New Orleans and the festivities did not take place on the football gridiron. Many of golf’s most triumphant names took to the tees on Sunday to participate in the Devo Strong PGA Tour Champions Pro-Am Charity at the Floridian Golf Club in Palm City. The star-studded field of players was composed of legends, he-

roic figures in the golf world for more than half a century. Names such as Jack

Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite headlined a field held in golf lore. The numbers alone are staggering. The participants have comJack Nicklaus was one of several legendary golfers at Palm City’s Floridian to participate in the Devo Strong PGA Champions Pro-Am event Sunday, Feb. 3. Beth Zsoka, public information officer, said she’s had numerous requests for presentations about the new bridge from area organizations. “We’re happy to do presentations for any group that wants us to come,” she said. Later this month, the Port St.

Highway Administration is funding the $65 million construction through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. It was slated to be finished by summer, but there have been some delays. Construction started in April 2011. “We are now working on the superstructure, that is the beams and riding surface,” Denti said. “The riding surface is called the deck. Out of 19 (sections forming the deck), we have poured six. The beams, or girders, what supports those decks – of the 20 of those, 19 spans have completed beam installation.” When done, the bridge is projected to carry about 28,000 trips a day, relieving traffic from the Palm City Bridge. Additionally, the new bridge will help Martin poise to get some development going again. The Palm City Bridge has been over capacity for about a decade, preventing some new construction. In addition to four lanes with additional turning lanes at the ends, the bridge’s 120-foot girth will sport 10-foot shoulders for pedestrians and bicyclists. Fishing, however, will be prohibited, because of a lack of parking. Denti said the bridge won’t affect navigation on the St. Lucie River. “A boater can be guaranteed 55 feet (clearance) under any condi-

The last Congress was that sort of ‘my way or the highway’ mentality. Not this Congress. This is all about working together and bipartisanship.” Murphy stressed that bipartisanship is key in solving the country’s issues. Murphy also said he met with fellow first-time House Dem-

ocrats and Republicans to draft a letter to leadership, highlighting their focus. “All of the issues that we have with the economy, with the debt, with what’s going on overseas and with guns can be tackled if we work together on them,” Murphy said. “I think you’re going to see some progress out of D.C. I hope to be a big part of that.” “This freshman class is here to work in a (bipartisanship) manner,” Murphy added. “No. 2, we want common sense solutions. We’re going to get over the rhetoric. We’re not going to point a finger at Bush or Obama or Clinton. And three, we’re not there to get re-elected. Our job is to get some-

thing done.” Port St. Lucie Mayor JoAnn Faiella said she was pleased Murphy accepted her invitation to address local officials. “It’s very important that elected officials alter their schedules to meet with their constituents, especially the ones who voted them in,” Faiella said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a Democrat, Republican or Independent. We have to put party lines aside and focus on the issues and come together as one to help each other out.” The Treasure Coast Regional League of Cities consists of municipalities from St. Lucie, Martin, Indian River and Okeechobee counties. Its purpose is to promote communication among the municipalities and represent Treasure Coast area governments to the state league of cities, the state legislature and other state agencies. Stuart Mayor Eula Clarke, Ocean Breeze Vice President Ann G. Kagdis, Fellsmere Vice Mayor Joel Tyson, Stuart Commissioner James Christie and Fort Pierce Mayor Linda Hudson all attended. Christie voiced concerns about Lake Okeechobee discharges into the St. Lucie River. “One of the problems in Martin County is the dying of the St. Lucie River with the releases. That’s a concern for me,” Christie said. “The Indian River Lagoon is an important part of the economy in our area. We talked to the (Army) Corps with no positive response.” Murphy said the environment and the health of the St. Lucie River is on the top of his to-do list. “Locally, one of my top priorities is the environment and ensuring we find that balance between businesses and the environment. We can all acknowledge and recognize a little bit of money invested on our environment – whether it’s inlets or beach renourishment – come back 4-1. So much of our economy throughout Florida and certainly on the Treasure Coast is tourism.” Murphy added he has already met with Army Corps officials and

GOLF from page 1 bined for 827 professional victories from the PGA, Champions and European tours, including 62 Major championships. The field, which included 10 Hall of Famers, came down to Palm City for a good cause. On Nov. 30, 2011, Devon Quigley, the 28-year old son of PGA Champions Tour player Dana Quigley, was involved in a life-threatening car accident in Riviera Beach. While currently incapable of walking or talking, Devon is rehabilitating in Rhode Island, continuing to show fight and progress 14 months after the accident, when doctors gave him a slim chance of survival. “Devon is doing good right now,” Dana Quigley said. “He’s in the home he grew up in and is making small improvements every day.” “It’s probably going to be a lifetime process. Doctors never gave him a chance after the accident, but they just don’t know how strong and powerful our Lord is. He is by his side all the time. He’s not going to leave him and neither are we.” The game of golf is generally deemed an individual sport. A golfer, his caddy and his golf clubs does battle with fellow golfers, the golf course and the weather conditions. However, on a sunny, cloudless day, these individuals stood together as a team to help one of their own. “It’s just a great tribute to what we as professional golfers stand for, coming to the aid of a fallen comrade,” Quigley said. “It’s humbling, mind-blowing and it just knocks the wind out of me to think that this group of guys took time out of their schedule to do this.”

“We aren’t individuals today. Of course we compete, but when it comes down to it, we are just one big family.” Despite being one of the last golfers to arrive after flying in from his West Palm Beach home, the biggest attraction was surely Jack Nicklaus. The Golden Bear, owner of a record 18 Major championships, spoke on how the uniqueness of golf offers opportunities for charity events that no other sport can match. “I think other sports would love to be able to do what we have the ability do in golf,” Nicklaus said. “It’s pretty difficult for football players to go out to football stadiums and basketball players to go out to basketball courts to do something like this. “We have a unique platform to showcase all of our people for a cause. So to have the ability to come out here and help other golfers is pretty neat. We just hope this helps Devon in his recovery.” Before the 11 a.m. shotgun start, Palm City resident and Floridian club member Jack Meyering stood toward the back of the driving range, watching in awe of the number of legends practicing in his sight. “I’ve seen some of these guys here before, but not so many of them all at one time,” Meyering said. “These guys are out here hitting the ball a ton and it’s a pleasure to watch. “This is a great day for Palm City and the Floridian.” Before the golfers took their majestic swings to the Floridian greens and fairways, a special dinner and auction was held Saturday evening at Nicklaus’ Palm Beach home. Although the final totals have not been counted, Hollis Cavner, event organizer with Pro Link Sports, estimates more that $1 million was raised over the weekend to assist with Devon’s medical bills.

Arts teacher honored as Teacher of the Year By Patrick McCallister For Your Voice News & Views MARTIN COUNTY — LaRhonda Brown, a visual arts teacher at Port Salerno Elementary, has two questions. “Who, me?” she said. “What did I do?” On Friday, Feb. 1, Brown was named Martin County Teacher of the Year at the Education Foundation of Martin County’s Teacher of the Year Awards Celebration, sponsored by Publix. She was also named Martin County’s Elementary Teacher of the Year. The honors put her in contention for Florida Department of Education’s Teacher of the Year competition. If Brown is named the state’s teacher of the year, she has one hope. “I think a paramedic should be standing there when they tell me,” she said. The last Martin County teacher named as the state’s Teacher of the Year was Jensen Beach High School’s Conney Dahn in 2007.

LaRhonda Brown

Brown said her work to get students involved in their community seems to have gotten a lot of attention from her fellow educators. “I think, just from hearing what my peers are saying, it’s my ability to take what I’m teaching in the classroom and move it outside the classroom,” she said. Last April, Brown’s students held Empty Bowls, an art show that raised about $1,500 for the Treasure Coast Food Bank, which serves Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee, and St. Lucie counties. “I teach them that they’re powerful enough to make change, and responsible to make change,” Brown said. “It was their work that did it. They made bowls. They invited parents and I invited community members.” The children’s artistic bowls sold for $15 each. The show was such a success, it’ll return on April 30. The second annual Empty Bowls

will be at the school, 3260 S.E. Lionel Terrace, Stuart. Lisa Rhodes, executive director of the education foundation, said that this year’s nominees were a strong field from a school system with many excellent educators. “There are many outstanding teachers,” she said, “I’m happy not to sitting on that judging panel. It is difficult (to choose); they all do so much.” Brown graduated from Florida State University and started teaching 10 years ago. She’s taught reading and art in Martin County for eight. The 33-year-old had tips for parents, new teachers and students. “Don’t be afraid to be involved,” she said to parents. “I think a lot of parents are intimidated to go to school, or to try to teach children new things. Don’t be afraid to jump in there at the school.” For young teachers… “All kids have needs,” Brown said. “Really, teachers, you find what that need is and you meet it. You do what you need to do, and you find the energy to do it.” She said poet Maya Angelou inspires her advice to students, be they in kindergarten or college. “The world is waiting for your greatness, and you owe it to deliver,” Brown said. “You were born for a reason and the world is waiting for you to show us that reason.”

Thousands show support for firefighter Residents from around the Treasure Coast attend fundraiser for Jahwann McIntyre By Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer MARTIN COUNTY — Lake Charles resident Scott Van Duzer raised $19,000 for injured Martin County firefighter Jahwann McIntyre, 22, of Port St. Lucie, who was badly burned while battling a house fire at a foreclosed home in

western Stuart on Dec. 27. More than 50 percent of McIntyre’s body was burned in the blaze police are calling arson. Martin County Sheriff’s deputies arrested the home’s owner Joseph Haas, in connection with the suspicious fire. Van Duzer said the enormous showing speaks volumes about the community. “Every time I ask for support, I never take it for granted,” Van Duzer said. “This is the best community in the U.S.” McIntyre’s mother, Ann McIntyre,

briefly left her son’s bedside at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami to attend the event and thank the more than 2,000 who attended and donated. She said the donations will go toward paying for her son’s medical expenses. “It’s amazing. Everybody is so supportive,” she said. “It’s been really overwhelming how many have showed their love for Jahwann.” McIntyre said despite her son’s injuries and numerous surgeries, which included skin grafts, Jahwann is slowly but surely recov-

ering and is already talking about getting back to work. “Every day he’s progressing,” she said. “It’s going to be a long and painful recovery, but he’s maintaining an upbeat spirit.” McIntyre’s cousin Corey McIntyre, a fullback for the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, donated a pair of cleats for auction. McIntyre said Jahwann is a warrior at heart. “He’s doing good and hanging in there,” said McIntyre, who graduated from South Fork High School

MURPHY from page 4 plans to draft an environmental bill with the help of Republican Rep. Tom Rooney of District 17. “I had a meeting at the Pentagon last week with some of the top people of the Army Corps and told them our priorities – what we need to do and where our investments need to be,” Murphy said. “We really want to get things like beach renourishment on a cycle. Same thing with the inlets and how they’re going to dredge them,

so we’re not up in arms, we know when it’s coming and we have the money allocated.” Regarding the nation’s mending economy, Murphy said the U.S. needs to take swift action. “We have to address the reality of our fiscal house and make sure we have a sustainable future for generations to come. Right now what’s happening in the world – with Asia slowing down, Europe is still in a recession, South America is slowing down – we have a real opportunity to get our fiscal house in order and lead the way.”

PALM CITY — Growing up in Palm City, Jason Giovando had plenty of pets. “We always had cats and dogs,” he said. “I was a big animal lover.” He was also a Boy Scout, working on his veterinary science merit badge, when he had the opportunity to work with a veterinarian. That’s when he decided on his future career. “I asked a vet to go over some things and to get a feel for a day in his shoes,” Giovando said. “We spent that day and got to go behind-the-scenes. I was hooked.” Giovando graduated from Martin County High School and started college at what was then Indian River Community College. He continued his undergraduate degree at Florida Atlantic University and then went to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville for veterinary school.

Jason Giavando Now, the young vet has returned to Palm City. He has joined veterinarian Karol Poderski at Marin Downs Animal Hospital, with a specialty in small animals. He spoke recently about his love for animals and for his hometown.

Master Jeweler and Gemologist Terry Rieger’s 40 year career had an unusual beginning. As a traditional artist in her early 20’s Terry’s culinary hobby provided her artistic talent. She delighted in designing confectionery masterpieces. If she wasn’t creating exquisite decorated wedding cakes for friends and family, she was sculpting whimsical, mouthwatering candies, or designing sugar Easter eggs with complete 3-D panoramas inside. The occupants of those windowed eggs were meticulously detailed, right down to microscopic whiskers on the tiny Easter bunnies. One of those Easter eggs, a gift to a family friend, is responsible for launching her lifelong career in jewelry. The family friend was a jeweler, and so taken with her artistry was he, that he insisted her designs must be produced in gold. Her mentor, refusing to take no for an answer, arranged for a full compliment of jewelers tools to be delivered, and arranged for her to be the first and only student ever tutored by noted Russian jeweler Constance Osmanki. Terry found herself commuting back and forth to Europe for the next twelve Years. Studying and perfecting her craft in London’s famed diamond quarter Hatton Garden. Designing Horses, is a sad passion, as a child Terry rode her favorite horse Rusty, however years later she was diagnosed with allergic asthma and cannot be near a horse. So she designs them in gold. And as you can see they look exactly like the live ones. Terry’s passion remains custom jewelry: however, and her exquisite designs range from the extraordinarily graceful to the wonderfully whimsical.

Giovando decided on Tennessee because he had good interview and he got a good feeling about the school. “It turned out to be a great decision,” he said. “I enjoyed my time there, but I always knew I was coming back here. This is my home. I could take this education anywhere, but being here in my hometown, I can forge bonds with pet owners and it gives me a greater sense of community and satisfaction.” The veterinary program is four years. Three are spent in the classroom and laboratory and the last is hands-on experience learning surgical techniques and diagnostic techniques. The study includes both large farm animals and smaller animals that are usually kept as pets. Surprisingly, there are areas of specialization, including ophthalmology, or eye care; oncology, or cancer treatment; a surgical rotation; orthopedics; soft tissue injuries; behavior issues; and nutrition. Giovando decided he wanted to work primarily with dogs and cats. “I think it’s a personal decision,” he said. “It’s where you feel the most comfortable. It comes from where your passion is. I love horses. I’d never been around them until I went to Tennessee, but the bond has always been with small animals. My area of profession-

al interest is oncology. My mother passed away from brain caner when I was in college. I was taking biology and I became interested in cancer and chemotherapy. “I’m also interested in internal medicine, when pets aren’t doing well and we don’t know why. I like the challenge of the hard cases. Ultrasonography is new to veterinary medicine and it’s another way to look inside the animal. The X-ray is general, but with ultrasound, you can see tissue structure, the bladder, the liver and the heart. It’s a really nice tool.” Vets are often asked about the difficulties in treating patients who can’t tell them where it hurts. “One of the neat things about veterinary medicine is that you have to think about the animal and its history,” he said. “That includes the age, species, breed and if it’s neutered. It’s an investigation with pieces of information. That’s fascinating.” Vets also know that pets come with people, people who are often very attached to their animals. People think vets become vets so they don’t have to deal with people,” Giovando said. “Ultimately, it’s people we share the knowledge with. That’s the rewarding part of it, to diagnose an animal with a treatable condition or explain and give peace of mind (if we can’t help.) Euthanasia is

Dance Company fuses modern dance with Latin flair By Shelley Koppel Staff writer STUART — Ballet Hispanico has already had a special year. On Jan. 20, the company, under the direction of Eduardo Vilaro, was part of an Inauguration celebration of Latino arts and culture at the Kennedy Center. Created by Eva Longoria, the event featured legends such as Rita Moreno and Chita Rivera. “What an honor it was to be part of the Inauguration,” Vilaro said. “It was electric. There was so much energy. We brought our students as well as the company and traveled down by bus, with parents. It was a family event. We’re returning to the Kennedy Center next December.” Ballet Hispanico makes a stop at the Lyric Theatre on Feb. 20.

Eduardo Vilaro spoke from New York about the company. “The word ‘ballet’ for us, just means dance,” he said. “We are ballet-trained dancers. We are a contemporary dance company fused with a Latin flair. We focus on beautiful dances, fused with Latino cultures. It stands us apart and focuses us and the work we do.” Vilaro is a native of Cuba who came to New York City when he was 6. He began studying dance as a scholarship student at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center and also studied at the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance. He has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Adelphi University on Long Island and was a dancer with Ballet His-

He received a master’s degree in interdisciplinary art from Columbia College in Chicago and served as artist-in residence at the Dance Center. In 2007, he was named Chicagoan of the Year. Vilaro returned to New York to become artistic director of the company in 2009. “I think the impetus (for my return) was continuing Tina’s legacy. I’m a New Yorker through and through and it was a wonderful opportunity to come back home. Dr. Michael Sohl is “The Gold Standard” on the Treasure Coast

nO anxiEty • nO pain • nO StrESS

Imagine actually looking forward to a dental appointment. Imagine coming out of your dental visit relaxed and refreshed. Dr. Michael Sohl and his expert team have brought dentistry innovation and your comfort to a whole new level, providing gentle sleep for all implant, cosmetic, and general dentistry. From the simplest to the most sophisticated dental procedures. Performed with expertise, delivered with a deep commitment to personal attention and caring.

Are Dental Implants Right for You?

Now, you have more options. Implant-retained dentures are permanent, and they look, feel, and function like natural teeth. You can smile and eat without fear of slippage. You can go to sleep at night and wake up in the morning with your teeth in place.

He has a dental CAT scan unit on premises for computer guided implant placement protocols for Nobel Biocares All-on Four/Teeth in a DayTM procedures. All-on-Four/Teeth in a DayTM was developed to minimize the number of implants required to anchor a complete set of dentures. A full arch can be replaced with four implants in a single visit, as opposed to as many as eight implants and multiple office visits.
