Luke Kendall (No. 15) scores for Martin County High School while being defended by Logan Bach (No. 13) of Jensen Beach High School during a match Friday, March 15 in Jensen Beach. The Martin County Tigers lost the district match 7-4.

By Patrick Bernadeau For Your Voice News & Views MARTIN COUNTY — South Florida is becoming a lacrosse region. The sport is predominately played in the Northeast, but its popularity has spread throughout the state, particularly on the Treasure Coast. Many schools have added lacrosse programs, including Martin County High School. The boys’ lacrosse team is in the middle of its fourth season. That might not seem like long to build a program, but the Tigers have not taken baby steps over that period of time. In their first season, Martin County only won once in 13 games. The next season, the Tigers upped their win total to seven and earned their

Engineer builds gardens, one seed at a time By Shelley Koppel Staff writer PALM CITY — Tom Wiegerink is a modern-day Johnny Appleseed. The graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy is an estimator for an asphalt company from Monday to Friday. He also helps out with security at the Lyric Theatre. On the weekends, he tends to Victory Garden International, an organization he has founded. His goal is to teach families and individuals to grow their own food gardens, collect seeds and replant

them so they can be self-sustaining. Wiegerink came up with the idea for the gardens two years ago, when the economy was so bad. He saw the statistics on hunger in the United States and wanted to do something. He took the name for his plan from the Victory gardens citizens grew during World

Park to become ‘Maggy’s Hammock’ By Patrick McCallister For Your Voice News & Views Editor’s note: Due to a production error, several paragraphs of this story were cut off in last week’s edition when it was originally published. We are republishing the story in its entirety. Your Voice News & Views regrets the error. MARTIN COUNTY — Maggy Hurchalla vigorously denies stories that her sister — Janet Reno, former attorney general — and she hunted alligators when they were young. They wrestled them. “Not big ones,” she said. “We’re talking 2, 4 feet.” The two did, however, join their brother in hunting a wide variety of Florida’s poisonous snakes to sell — alive. Hurchalla plays down the whole hunting-poisonous-snakes thing, claiming the most exciting thing that happened was the time she almost sat on a bagful of them. She was trying to imagine how to explain that to an emergency-room doc-

tor. These days, Hurchalla takes things a bit slower and contents herself by petting moray eels. “It took me years and years and years to work up the nerve to do that,” she said. She had plenty of years under water to work up that nerve. “My first job was teaching SCUBA at 12 in Miami,” Hurchalla said. “(The customers) didn’t know I was 12, because I was 6 feet tall.” Fitting then that at its last regular meeting — Tuesday, March 5 — the Martin County Board of Commissioners honored the bigger-than-life resident by renaming Rocky Point Hammock Park in Stuart to Maggy’s Hammock Park. “No individual has made a greater contribution to what Martin County looks like and feels like than Maggy,” Chairwoman Sarah Heard of Port Salerno said before the unanimous vote. Commissioner John Haddox, Palm City, quickly made the motion to rename the park. In an interview after the meeting, he said Hurchalla was one of the first public figures he learned about when he moved to the area. “When I first came to Florida in

ST. LUCIE WEST — Despite the tears and anguish, a still-grieving Morales family said it’s caught a glimmer of a silver lining thanks to the enormous show of community support displayed during the close-knit unit’s most trying time. Brian Morales, 42, who said coping with his younger brother’s loss has been devastating, said the unexpected and expansive support has been a huge emotional crutch. “For days we congregated at my parent’s house (in Lake Charles),” Brian Morales said. “People would bring food, cold cuts and letters

of support. It’s just awesome.” During St. Lucie County Sheriff Sgt. Gary Morales’s March 4 funeral, which attracted more than 4,000 from around the state and country, Brian Morales often looked on in awe. “It was a nice, warm feeling,” he said. “We saw all of the people who took the time out of their schedules to honor my brother and what he stood for.” Sgt. Gary Morales was fatally shot in the line of duty on Feb. 28. Authorities say Eriese Tisdale, 25, is the man who pulled the trigger. Tisdale is being held on a murder charge in the death penalty-eligible case, the state

HURCHALLA from page 3 documents that have helped Martin County stay on the preservation side of development. She continues to help the county commission craft preservation policies. Hurchalla was a county commissioner from 1974 to 1994, five terms. She took to the commission a sort of pre-development South Florida sensibility. The kind gained from going on a family camping trip up one side of Florida and down the other — in a converted horse trailer. That was in ’47. The family went from the Everglades to Pensacola, across the Panhandle to Jacksonville and back down the East Coast. “It was back when there were dirt roads in downtown Tallahassee,” she said. ‘Round about 1980, property owner Bob Krauss approached Hurchalla about getting the county to buy some environmentally sensitive land he had. “He was a strong political supporter of mine and owned property on Rocky Point,” Hurchalla said. “He was getting older and thought it should be saved.” Krauss was willing to sell the land for less than its value, but had to get something from it.

LACROSSE from page 1 first non-losing season last year. Sitting at a record of 4-3 at the time this story went to press, second year Martin County varsity head coach Justin Van Tassel believes his team’s depth will result in wins in the near and distant future. “We are getting better every day and starting to see the building of a program,” Van Tassel said. “At every position, there are seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen. We have seniors who do the right things and who all the others look up to. We also have freshman who can flat-out play.” “It’s not like we are going to graduate kids next year and not have kids stepping right in. I like the mix of players we have now and for the upcoming years.” The local lacrosse climate is getting brighter despite the children not growing up with it. Lacrosse is hockey on grass, but Florida isn’t exactly hockey country. While there are two NHL teams, the lack of exposure and interest in hockey shows when kids start playing lacrosse. “Kids, more than anything else, struggle with their lacrosse IQ,” says Van Tassel. “They don’t grow up watching hockey or lacrosse like the kids up North. They have trouble with the knowledge of the game, knowing where to be, where to move and get to an open area. “But that understanding comes with playing. The more they play the game, the more they get it.” Youth lacrosse travel clubs have been formed in recent years, allowing kids the chance to gain valuable experience on the field.

Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer Anthony Pellegrino (No. 2) of Martin County High School makes a defensive move against Mason Harris (No. 7) of Jensen Beach High School during a match Friday, March 15 in Jensen Beach. The Martin County Tigers lost the district match 7-4. Based in Palm City, the Stampede Lacrosse Club provides many Tigers a home to get better, including junior midfielder Anthony Pellegrino and senior midfielder Matt Stone. “High school lacrosse is where all of our stats are kept, but travel ball gives us the chance to play under many coaches,” Stone said. “Getting instruction from different coaches, giving a new perspective on your game is always good.” Pellegrino values travel ball for

the opportunity to measure himself against his peers. “Travel ball is always good, because it gets us prepared for the season,” Pellegrino said. “It allows us to do some scouting on the competition because we play a lot

of the same guys we will be going against in the season.” Martin County will have played at Satellite High School on March 20 before hosting John Carroll High School on March 22 at 6 p.m.

attorney’s office said. An especially poignant time, Brian Morales said, was during the 26-mile-long processional drive from Fort Pierce’s Westside Baptist Church to Forest Hills Memorial Park in Palm City, where the public servant and father of two was laid to rest. Brian Morales said he’ll never forget the scores who lined the streets waving flags for the fallen hero. “Words can’t explain it. It put a smile on our faces,” he said. “When we saw all those people, we were crying for joy, not sadness.” Brian Morales said a simple gesture like a hug or an understanding nod from a passerby would have sufficed. But he said he’s forever grateful for the compassionate community which has gone above and beyond. Brian Morales said his brother’s two young daughters, Brooklynn, 8, and Jordan, 6, are handling their father’s death differently and age-appropriately. “Brooklynn understands it,” he said. “We’ve had a couple of talks with Jordan. One moment she understands. Then four hours later, she’ll say, ‘Mommy, Daddy

“Words can’t explain it. It put a smile on our faces. When we saw all those people, we were crying for joy, not sadness.” Brian Morales and Brooklynn are taking me to the zoo. Are you coming too?’” Brian Morales said if they’re anything like their father, they will be fine one day. “Jordan is tough like Daddy,” he said. “They both have good hearts.” Brian Morales said he’s also thankful for the numerous fundraising events set up in his brother’s honor, including one at American Top Team Legacy gym in St. Lucie West that raised more than $6,000 to aid Sgt. Gary Morales’s widow, Holly and her two girls. Brian Morales said he wants his brother to be remembered as a loving and caring person. “I want them (the public) to know he was good hearted,” he said. “He kept his heart on his sleeve. He would give anyone the shirt off of his back at the drop of a hat if they needed it.” “That’s just something my parents instilled in me and my brothers … the fantastic four.”

HURCHALLA from page 5 Hurchalla got on the phone to friends involved in land preservation. They told her about federal grants the county could apply for. “About half of (the property) is tropical hammock and the other half is sand pine scrub,” she said. “We got 15 acres for less than $100,000, and half was paid for by an outdoor-recreation grant.” Recreation, as in trails. As in the trails that Hurchalla and a friend hand-cut with machetes, clippers, and sheer determination. “Trail building is an art form,” she said. “If you do it by designing and bidding it, it gets ridiculously expensive and time-consuming.” These days Hurchalla tries to limit her activities, due to a protracted illness and caring for her ailing sister. Nevertheless, she’s still enjoying whitewater rafting, and looking for the very rare American crocodiles in nature. She came across one not too long ago. “It was exciting after 72 years to see a natural crocodile,” she said. The park is at 3854 S.E. Kubin Ave, Stuart.

Multi-talented performer gives back to community By Shelley Koppel Staff writer PALM CITY — Lynn Mozena Kreps is skilled with a camera and a microphone. Four years ago, she put both talents to good use, starting her own company, Avenue Entertainment. Her company provides mobile disc jockey work and event photography for weddings, private parties and office functions as well as for nonprofit fundraisers. The latter is her way of giving back to the community. “There’s a real need for the nonprofits looking for fundraisers,” she said. “Entertainment is

expensive. It’s great to take it off the budget, to have vendors who will volunteer or cut prices. Since I’m mobile, I can set up shop anywhere.” For Kreps, working as DJ MO is an extension of her performing career. She is known for her performances in community theater and recently completed a run at the Barn Theatre as Ginger in “The 1940s Radio Hour.” “I’ve always been an entertainer,” she said. “The transition to DJ is a natural one. I was approached by another DJ who said I’d be great at it. I tried it out and things just moved up.”

GARDENS from page 1 War II to help in the war effort. “My grandfather and uncles were farmers,” he said. “I was growing vegetables since I was old enough to dig a hole. I started it in my backyard, collecting seeds from everyone.” Members of Palm City Presbyterian Church contributed seeds and he put out requests for additional seeds to grow corn, beans, tomatoes and just about anything that could be sent to his post office box. He prefers that they not be hybrids, as hybrids do not give off seeds. “I started growing seedlings and took them to East Stuart and Indiantown,” he said. “I partnered with Habitat Angel.” On its website, Habitat Angel, based in Stuart, describes itself as a faith-based nonprofit that initiates an annual neighborhood restoration project each year. They do an “Extreme Makeover” in the designated community and Wiegerink is collecting and growing the seeds for a community garden. This year’s Extreme Makeover, held in February and March, was in Booker Parker in Indiantown. “The Angels introduced me to the volunteers who will maintain the garden and distribute the food,” Wiegerink said. “I’m there to build it, not to run it.” Eventually, Wiegerink hopes every

home will have a garden. “If you take a green pepper and open it, there may be 100 seeds,” he said. “If you grow 100 plants, it multiplies and it is self-sustaining. People share seeds. The great thing about Florida is that you can grow anything. There would be a seed bank, because not everybody likes everything.” Wiegerink has several goals for his organization. “I’d like to teach people how to grow their own food,” he said. “If I can buy land and have it self-sustaining, I can give away food as well as teach people to grow their own. I’d like to have a produce truck and drive around, giving away, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers. Produce will get more expensive. People should buy local and I’ll distribute locally.” For Wiegerink, collecting seeds is the important first step, because you can’t grow anything without them. From then, it’s on to planting. “I’m focusing on building gardens, one garden at a time,” he said. Donations of seeds may be sent to P.O. Box 2114, Palm City, FL 34990. For more information about Habitat Angel, visit the website www.habitatangel.org or call (772) 678-0357. Donations of tools, including shovels, rakes and tillers are needed. Visit Tom Wiegerink’s Facebook page, Victory Garden International, in the Groups section

Tom Wiegerink started Victory Garden International and began teaching people how to grow food from seeds after reading statistics about hunger in America in today’s improverished economy. The nonprofit sector is dominated by women, so it’s a natural progression to have a female DJ (at events.) When women get together, everyone gets excited. Put a microphone in my hand and I’m ready to go,’ says Lynn Mozena Kreps, otherwise known as DJ MO.

At an event, she will either take the pictures or spin the discs. Her goal is the same. “My job is to make sure that behind-the-scene things are running smoothly,” she said. “I never approach a client with a problem. I approach with a solution.” Wearing different hats allows her greater insight into how an event runs. “One thing about being able to do both is that I have an understanding of what the photographer needs. I can help facilitate that and let them know when certain things will happen. When I’m taking the pictures, I understand the timing. Like any good production, there is a sense of timing and flow.” Kreps, who married her husband Sean last year, said that wedding receptions have become more like

They may have a bridal dance with the wedding party. They want to keep things lively. My job is to make sure it’s special to what this family wants.” There are few female DJs and Kreps is pleased to be a role model. She also said that being a woman makes a difference in how she makes an event special. “I bring a different perspective,” she said. “I approach events in a different way. Over the holidays, they called me in to take photos of on-site residents. My heart was bursting. It was so great to be there and interact.” Kreps is also involved with the Woman’s Club of Stuart, the American Cancer Society, the Treasure Coast Food Bank and SafeSpace. First Serve serves up country club atmosphere for all By Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer nrodriguez@yourvoiceweekly.com

Violinist thinks outside the box By Shelley Koppel Staff writer STUART — Canadian violinist Lara St. John has an impressive resume. She began her musical studies when she was 3. At the age of 10, she made her European debut in Lisbon. She entered the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia at 13 and, at 17, was the youngest post-graduate student at the Moscow Conservatory. She has performed with orchestras around the world. Now 42, Lara St. John comes to the Lyric Theatre on March 27. She spoke recently from her home in New York about her career, which has taken unconventional turns. St. John started her own recording label, Ancalagon, when she was 28. “I wanted independence,” she said. “Integrity is important to me. “I wanted to be the one who chose the repertoire. I wanted to make sure if I put something out there, that I was completely behind the project. Sometimes it’s been a bit of a hard slog. When you make mistakes, they’re your mistakes. “I’m very happy being a label-owner. I never ran into trouble as a woman in a man’s business of label-running. I’m 6 feet tall. It’s not a disadvantage as I’m bigger than most men.” St. John has recorded the works of many of the world’s classical masters. In 2010, she recorded several concertos by Mozart with her brother Scott. The recording won a Juno award, the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy. However, St. John also has a less convention-

companied by Martin Kennedy on the piano. “I’ll be playing Franck’s epic “Violin and Piano Concerto,” she said. “Everybody loves it. That’s the only standard. I’ll be playing a piece by Martin Kennedy that’s a world premiere and a bunch of pieces written for me, based on Eastern European themes. There’s a Greek tune that’s a lot of fun as well as a Yiddish tune and a Serbian tune.” St. John will also present a piece by noted composer John Corigliano that was written for her. “I grew up in Canada and Celtic fiddling is big in the Ottawa Valley,” she said. “I gave him some of the traditional ways of doing the violin and the piece has a lot of bluegrass and Appalachian sounds.” St. John said that this sort of recital is her favorite kind. “All of this is very enjoyable,” she said. “I’d much rather hear a recital like this. I’ve always programmed things I’d want to go hear myself. We intend to have a good time.” Lara St. John comes to the Lyric Theatre, 59 S. W. Flagler Ave., Stuart, on March 27 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $45. Call the box office at (772) 286-7827 or order online at www.lyrictheatre.com.

al side. In 2012, St. John and an ensemble called Polkastra released a CD called “I Do: The Wedding Album.” It presents music from the processional to the end of the last dance and includes new, often funny, takes on everything from Clarke’s “Trumpet Voluntary,” known here as a “Flumpet Voluntary” and played on the hybrid flugelhorn-trumpet; to Pachelbel’s “Canon,” known as “The Canon in D, Mostly” and featuring cannons. The group also performs the “Kosher Chicken Dance” and folk tunes from around the world. “We certainly had a lot of fun,” St. John said. “When I was doing the research, there are wedding compilation albums, with rather bad compilations. Our first album in 2008 made people get up and dance and laugh. A wedding is one place where everybody gets up and dances. Older folks and toddlers just start shaking their booties.” St. John has also been a pioneer in the use of the Internet and iTunes. “I’ve had a website since 1993 and iTunes has been very good to me,” she said. “They contacted me in 2004 to ask for my Bach Concerto album. I actually said, ‘OK, what are iTunes?’ That’s only nine years ago. That’s how quickly everything is changing. “ITunes is great for classical music. People can browse and listen and buy it. I have heard that the percentage of classical music sold on iTunes is much higher than those sold in stores.” For her Lyric concert, St. John will be ac-

With the country club atmosphere, they assume it’s a private place and they can’t come in, but it’s open to the public,” Owen said. The indoor and outdoor space offers up the perfect spot to host an event, Owen said. “It’s the perfect venue to have a fashion show, wedding parties, private parties and functions,” Owen said. “We’ve done several catering events.” “We’ve had weddings, first holy communions, bridal showers, birthday parties of every age group and end of the year school parties,” Owen said. And then there’s the individual servings for private dining. “Everything on the menu is delicious. Our chef is very talented,” waitress Bobbi Trotto said. “The shrimp tempura is to die for. And we have really good burgers.” A highly recommended starter dish is the crispy tempura Trotto touted. The appetizer comes with

Owen said every dish is prepared with fresh and organic products. “Everything we make, even the soup, is homemade,” Owen said. “I really want things that are made from scratch ...
