I don’t need the money.”

TREASURE COAST — Ilya Katz is running Republican, but if elected to fill the 18th Congressional District seat he says that he’ll be independent. “It is not Republican; it is not Democrat,” Katz said. “I’m completely independent. I’m running as a Republican because a long time ago I worked for Ronald Reagan.” There might be a big rub for some Treasure Coast voters. Katz is not a resident of the district, which covers St. Lucie, Martin and part of Palm Beach counties. He lives in Broward County. “I am moving to my district,” Katz said. Katz said he planned on moving to the district earlier this year, but was delayed by medical problems. “Personally I don’t believe we need an enlarged government, or an enlarged tumor, and those are my two problems,” he said. A spokeswoman at the Florida
Illya Katz Department of State said there are no rules against running for Congress in a district one doesn’t reside in. “A state may not impose any further restrictions on qualifying for U.S. Representative than those found in the Constitution,” Brittany Lesser said in an emailed response to queries. “Thus, a person need not reside in the Congressional district in which they
are running.” The Constitution requires that a Representative be a citizen of the United States for at least seven years, be at least 25, and reside in the state from which her or she is elected to the House. Katz, who is Russian, said he has lived in the United States since the ‘70s, and in Florida for 36 years. Katz has not yet responded to Your Voice News & Views about whether he’ll move into the district whether or not he’s elected to represent it, among other questions. So far eight Republican hopefuls have put announced candidacies for the district. Democrat Patrick Murphy now holds the seat, and is running for it again. So far no other Democrats have challenged him. In addition to Katz, the Florida Division of Elections
lists Republican candidates Carl Domino, Beverly Joy Hires, Brian Lara, Alan Schlesinger, Calvin Deon Turnquest and Nick Robert Wukoson. Qualifying for congressional races is April 28 to May 2. The fee is $10,440, or 4,764 petition signatures in the 18th District. The division charges a 10 cent examination fee for each petition signature submitted. Every time you listen to the news, you hear someone talking about a ‘false economy,’ that we could have another recession.” Catrabone said he’s certain that the local recovery is on solid footing. Odaly Victorio, CareerSource’s communications coordinator, said that job numbers reflect that businesses are in an increasingly good mood for hiring, and she expects that to continue. “It is absolutely cause for optimism,” she said. “We’ve been sustaining an improved employment number for two years now.” Nevertheless, St. Lucie is lagging far behind the state and nation in job recovery. Those that report not having jobs and looking for employment in the previous 30 days are counted as unemployed. Discouraged workers — those who are able to work and want jobs, but have not sought employment in the previous 30 days — are not counted in the unemployment figure. Many call this “shadow unemployment,” and it’s inherently difficult to track due to variations for why people don’t seek jobs. CareerSource Research Coast was formally known as Workforce Solutions. The state has 24 regional workforce-development organizations under what used to be Workforce Florida, the state’s workforce-development program under the Department of Economic Opportunity. Each of the 24 is an independent agency, and all used different names. Victorio said the Florida Legislature enacted a bill in 2012 to unify them to a common name. The federal and state January employment reports are released in March because of “benchmarking,” a process for revising previous employment reports to improve their accuracy. The state will release February’s job numbers on Friday, March 28.

PALM CITY — Katey Foote Bourgeois has joined the Martin Grade Scenic Highway Team. The Martin Grade Scenic Highway Project is a grass-roots effort to have 12 miles of Martin Highway in western Martin County, which is locally known as The Martin Grade, designated a Flori-
da Scenic Highway. The effort began in 2007, when regional traffic planners proposed widening the road to four lanes, which would have destroyed the magnificent tree canopy that lines it. Local residents formed a Corridor Advocacy Group to protect this iconographic image of Martin County history and environment by having it admitted into the Florida Scenic Highway Program.

With an audible shake in her voice, Fran thanked the bicyclists for participating in the second Riding for Heroes, then led them in the Pledge of Allegiance. It was Sunday, March 23. Fran and Lance were standing in the park where their son spent time before joining the Marine Corps. It was also four years and a day after losing him to a roadside bomb less than a week after his 24th birthday. Lance Cpl. Justin Wilson died in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, while serving in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The bicyclists would leave and return to the park that the Martin County Commission renamed in 2011 in honor of Martin County’s first casualty in OEF. The county would lose another son in that war in 2013, Army Sgt. Justin Johnson Sr. of Hobe Sound. The ride, which also had 80-, 56- and 40-mile routes, benefited the LCpl. Justin J. Wilson (U.S. Marines) Memorial Foundation. Fran prefers to call it Justin’s Wings. The organization’s mission is straightforward: help families that need financial assis-

Fran said she got the idea for Justin’s Wings after a bit of family joshing during a phone call when Justin was in Afghanistan. “(Justin) said, ‘You guys are going to be here when I get off the bus, right?’” she said. Lance and Fran teased that the return from deployment was on the same say as Justin’s sister’s prom, so they wouldn’t make it. Fact is the whole family had every intention to see him when he returned home, which was scheduled for less than two months after Justin’s death. After realizing the family would be at his homecoming, Justin said words that inspired his mother after his death. “He said, ‘A lot of these guys don’t have anybody to be there when they get home,’” Fran said. Lance and Fran decided that no service member should miss family over money, so they started the foundation. Justin’s Wings has helped three families attend deployments and homecomings so far. Fran said the family has been learning how to run a notfor-profit. “I only do one fundraiser a year,”

Kayak Fishing Seminar is returning to Stuart just in time to launch the kayak fishing season for 2014. Want to learn the secrets of catching more fish from a kayak? The Katch Em Up! TREASURE COAST —PGA Golf Club today unveiled a friendly, yet sophisticated, state-of-the-art online reservation system, that enables golfers to easily “Book Online and Save” on advanced tee times via the web and mobile-phone applications. Resort golf customers are now able to reserve their rounds at the facility as much as six months in advance, a tremendous expansion from the previous 45-day booking window. Designed by Golfswitch, the new yield management system is similar in its structure to what is used in both the hotel and airline industries, which will enable golfers instant access to discounts during times of excess supply.
When offered, these discounts can vary depending on season, weather and even time of day. Children’s Services Council supports programs to keeps kids off the streets this summer FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE WEST — Hundreds of local children will have a safe and educational place to go over their summer break, thanks to the Children’s Services Council of St. Lucie County. For 15 years, the Children’s Services Council has dedicated funding to allow for additional summer opportunities for children. This year, seven programs will receive much-needed funding to assist children in our area. A total of $200,000 will help support full-time summer programs that run at least eight weeks of the summer break. The goal is two-fold — to enhance our community by keeping kids in a safe,
positive environment over the summer and keeping them engaged in learning activities to help avoid any potential learning loss. A total of 15 programs from all over St. Lucie County applied for financial help from the Children’s Services Council, with proposals totaling more than $478,000. Staff reviewed and prioritized the requests based upon feasibility to accomplish stated goals, focus on mitigation of summer learning loss, length of summer program, hours of operation, population to be served, planned activities including recreational and educational, location, and the number of children to be served. Environmental Studies Center hosts Earth Day Celebration & Native Plant Sale April 12 FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

MARTIN COUNTY — The Environmental Studies Council will be hosting their Annual Earth Day celebration and Native Plant Sale on Saturday, April 12 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. The Center, located at 2900 N.E. Indian River Drive in Jensen Beach, features saltwater aquariums, hands on learning, and is home to a releasable juvenile loggerhead sea turtle. This year’s event theme is “Celebrating Sea Turtles.” The free event features 15 minutes Sea Turtle Talks on topics like How Sea Turtles Got Their “Head Start”— The Ross Witham Story and Sea Turtle Nesting on Hutchinson Island, a “Create Your Own Wildlife” Corridor with members of the Martin County Chapter of the Florida Native

Plant Society, storytelling, games, crafts, face painting, and scavenger hunt, and more family-friendly fun. Guests can also tour the wet labs, butterfly gardens, and native plant hammock. Winners of the Youth Driven Cinema recycled art projects will be on display. Light refreshments are available for purchase. Live music will be provided by The Hot Sauce Boys. The Martin County Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society will be on-site with the not-to-bemissed Native Plant sale, benefiting the Environmental Studies Council. Monterey Road, Stuart, seasoned sea captain Don Cramer will provide viewers with tales from his voyages in the Mid-Atlantic over a 50-year career, in correspondence with his autobiography Summer Place: 101 Year History of Fishing & Wreck Diving. Hear about the zany characters who boarded his vessels, enjoy the explorations of Maryland and Virginia dive clubs,
who ventured out with Don, visiting wrecks such as the Varranger, King Cobia, The MoonStone and Jacob Jones. Hear first-hand accounts of rescued treasure. The stories of the Cramer clan unwind through emerging sea towns and the ups and downs of marriage, life at sea and love and loss. This is event is presented in partnership with Journey Stories. Donald Cramer is a 3rd generation captain. Loving the open seas, and the thrill of the “find” Don captained an oyster boat from the mid 1950’s to 1970’s before en-
tering the dangerous world of wreck diving. He chartered treasure hunters on decades of voyages out of the Hereford Inlet in New Jersey. Don is one of a handful of captains to hold an Active Commercial License. With an astute memory, he retells his tales of treasure, woe and humor in his book Summer Place: 101 Year History of Fishing & Wreck Diving. ‘Guys, dolls’ take stage at Lyric Staff writer

STUART — The musical “Guys and Dolls” is one of the bestloved in musical theater. A Tony-winner for Best Musical when it debuted in 1950, it has had several successful Broadway revivals. The book is by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows and the lyrics, those wonderful lyrics, are by Frank Loesser. The Lyric Theatre will stage a concert version of the musical April 10-13 with a cast of Lyric favorites including Lorrianna Colozzo as Sarah Brown, Karin Leone as Adelaide, Nestor Torres as Sky Masterson and Sarge as Nathan Detroit. Local celebrity Greg Rice will play Big Jule. The Lyric’s executive director, John Loesser, has dubbed them “The Lyric All-Stars.” If the name Loesser sounds familiar, John Loesser is, indeed, Frank Loesser’s son and he knows something about staging this show. “I’ve produced versions of it before, but this is the first time in concert,” he said. “It will be the whole show without sets and costumes. It will be all the music, with an orchestra, and all the dialogue. Only a narrator is added to tell us why we’re going where we are.” Veteran journalist Knight Kiplinger, head of the Kiplinger
financial media company and a singer in the Washington Chorus, will serve as narrator. Loesser said there will also be surprises along the way. “We intend to embellish it a little bit,” he said. “Nestor Torres, who is known for his flute work, does sing. We are going to give him some liberties with the Havana number to jump on his flute. Nestor is very musical and should do a great job. The minute I met Sarge, he was a natural Nathan to me. I designed the casting with local hometown favorites and he’s been playing at the Lyric for many years. He’s making his musical comedy stage debut.” The two female leads, Lorrianna Colozzo and Karin Leone, are also well-known to Lyric audiences. Colozzo, who is an opera singer, has given concerts at the Lyric for several years. Leone, the Lyric’s director of operations and education, has appeared in many area productions. Colozzo is excited about playing Sarah Brown, the prim and proper missionary trying to save souls in New York City. “I get to be a singer and play a part,” she said. “Lately, I’ve been in my own shows. Out’s nice to be in a well-written musical like “Guys and Dolls. Sarah Brown is a role I’m so excite to take on. She’s a great character, as strong

She learns a lot about herself and gets what she wants. “I’ve always loved that musical and Frank Loesser’s music is some of my favorite. To work closely on this project with his son is really an honor. It’s a great role for my vocal range. I love, ‘If I Were a Bell.’ It’s so beautifully written, it brings you back to the great American Broadway writing. I’m (also) going to be working opposite some great people.” Karin Leone, who plays Adelaide, has some of the best songs in the show, including “Adelaide’s Lament,” and “Take Back Your Mink.” It’s a role any female performer would relish, as she struggles to get Nathan Detroit to end their lengthy engagement and marry her. “She’s fun,” Leone said. “She’s a tortured woman in a difficult sort of way.” John Loesser noted that just as an organization like the Salvation Army is integral to the plot, so will it be integral to this production. The Martin County Salvation Army will be on stage,” he said. “It’s a partial fundraiser for them. This was a natural and we’re happy they’re participating.”

The show is produced by John Loesser, the Lyric’s executive director and Frank Loesser’s son. Just before this production’s rehearsals take place, Loesser will be going to New York City for a concert version of “Guys and Dolls” at Carnegie Hall. It’s a benefit concert and he sees this as a trend. “Musicals are expensive to produce,” he said. “It’s a way of getting them out there. It’s for more economical and contained. I might pick up a trick or two.” Loesser said that the emphasis in the show is on fun and good music.
“I’m thrilled with the cast,” he said. “I’m very happy we were able to cast it with hometown favorites at the Lyric. It will be a lot of fun.” The Lyric Theatre, 59 S.W. STUART — You have to love a show with a song, “What Do You Do with a B.A. in English.” That song, from the musical, “Avenue Q,” encapsulates every liberal arts major’s angst at a future that seems to hold the promise of offering fries with that burger. Jake Sanders, artistic direction of Curtain Call Productions, has brought “Avenue Q” to Flagler Place. It will run from April 4-13 with Heidi Condon directing and Sanders starring as Princeton, a recent college grad trying to find his place in the world. While “Avenue Q” is definitely an adults-only show, it has an interesting twist. The cast consists of several humans and

several puppets, voiced by the same actors on stage as characters. “It has the same feel as ‘Sesame Street,’ where people are on stage with the puppets and no one seems to acknowledge that they are puppets,” Sanders said. “It doesn’t feel forced. It feels like a show that is working hard to get a story across and the puppets are the perfect modality. Almost everyone can relate to one of these characters.” The ensemble cast includes Jenna Pinchbeck, a 2007 South Fork High School graduate who just completed a run in an off-Broadway show. MARTIN COUNTY-- Molly’s Gallery will be filled with plenty of artwork and champagne bubbles on Thursday, April 3, 5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m. at the Gallery’s final exhibit the season. Four artists will display their works of art during the month of April at Molly’s Gallery located at Molly’s House, 430 S.E. Osceola St., Stuart. Featured artists for April are Marjorie Wolfson, Janice Rogers, Madaline Reilly and Harry McVay. Janice Rogers will unveil a special portrait of Molly Sharkey at the Gallery Champagne Reception at 6 p.m. The evening will include hors d’oeuvres, wine, champagne, music provided by Joett’s String Duo and the opportunity to meet the artists. Portrait artist Janice Rogers has been working on a portrait of Molly Sharkey since last fall. The portrait will be unveiled at 6 p.m. at the Gallery Opening on April 3. The portrait will be hung in the gallery for all to enjoy in the future. Harry McVay captures every detail in his plein air watercolor,

She is a prize-winning, published poet. Most of her images in photography and watercolor come from her travels. Her work features landscapes, flora, fauna, lighthouses and waterfalls. Madaline Reilly has been painting for 10 years. Her mediums are watercolor, acrylics and oils. Her work features landscapes and flora. Janice Rogers’ love of art has expanded from her youth to today. In 1999, she and her husband moved to Palm City, after growing up in Deerfield Beach. For many years she studied with various artists developing her own style to include landscapes, still life, decorative arts and the love of portraits. The champagne reception includes art, complimentary hors d’oeuvres and wine, a chance to meet and mingle with the artists while listening to live music. High school student Ally Fleischer will be selling books during the champagne receptions to raise money for Molly’s House. Proceeds benefit the Molly’s House Adopt-A-Family program. MARTIN COUNTY — The Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast has been selected for “Heart Your Park,” a program introduced as part of Macy’s “Secret Garden” campaign that aims to raise awareness and dollars for local parks across the country. From now until March 31, customers at Macy’s in the Treasure Coast Square Mall can donate $1 or more at the register, with 100 percent of the donations benefiting The Children’s Museum in Indian Riverside Park. To further spread the love, Macy’s will match the total customer donation across all stores, dollar for dollar, up to $250,000 in total. The Children’s Museum is one of more than 550 organizations
nationwide that will benefit from Macy’s “Heart Your Park” this spring. In partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), the national nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of community parks, recreation and conservation, Macy’s stores across the country have each selected a local park or green space in their community to support through the program. Sanders also portrays Rod, a puppets struggling with his sexuality and Keith Lawson plays Nicky. He also plays Trekki Monster, an Internet ‘sexpert’ who is one of the Bad Idea Bears. “Rod and Nicky are a riff on Bert and Ernie,” Sanders said. “Rod is coming to terms with his sexuality. Everyone knows that he’s gay before he does.” Rounding out the cast are Phil Isme as Brian, Michelle Lucey as Christmas Eve and Hadiyyah Noelle Smith as former child star Gary Coleman. Don’t ask.
