Gabby Carbo of Palm City is used to bringing home trophies and has been particpating in barrel racing for years. MARTIN COUNTY — Josh Ferraro read disturbing news that got him in the run for the Martin County School Board District 5 seat. “I decided to run when I learned that 47 percent of children in Martin County are not reading at grade level by the third grade,” he said. “That’s an astonishing figure to me, and it was astounding to people I told who were not aware of it.” The Palm City man believes he knows some things that the district can do to combat the problem. He’s a board member of the not-for-profit Tykes & Teens, which offers counseling and other services to children. “We can get to the point where 95 to 100 percent of the children are reading at grade level,” Ferraro said. He said that in his work for the children’s charity he’s learned that a student’s ability to read at grade level at critical stages is largely determined long before he or she enters school. “One of the things we learned that 70 percent of a child’s brain is formed by the time they’re 5-yearsold,” Ferraro said. So to get elementary students reading at grade level it’s import-

PALM CITY — The passion of the four Carbo sisters from Palm City seems more like something out of a Louisa May Alcott novel than real life. Sydney, Gabby, Faith, and Keira are amazing young ladies who are singularly driven and deeply committed to each other and their community.
Recently the eldest, 19 yearold Sydney, was invited as a guest singer at this year’s Junior Achievement Watch a Rising Star (JAWRS) competition, held Feb. 13 at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach. Last year, she took home their 2nd place prize with her rendition from “Wicked” and a performance of Andrea Bocelli’s “Time to Say Goodbye.” Her devotion to her craft and talent were so palpable, that JAWRS, a competition for high school se-
nior vocalists from the Treasure Coast, couldn’t help but bring her back as a featured artist. Less than a month before, on Jan. 30, Sydney’s talent was recognized by the Gold Coast chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). In the freshmen women’s division, she won 1st place awards in classical music and musical theater. Now she has the oppor-

MARTIN COUNTY — “Pray that it never happens, but be ready if it does,” says Martin County Sheriff William Snyder, referencing the danger of the active shooter attacks that have lately renewed a front-page anxiety for local communities, since the Paris massacre in November 2015 and San Bernardino shootings in December 2015. While Snyder’s statement may seem common-sensical, how many of us are truly prepared for such an attack? Late January, the Sheriff’s Department began offering training for local businesses to better prepare them for active-shooter crisis management. Many small businesses have begun to line up for the training, from insurance companies to retail businesses, as well as a private school. “The worst thing for people to do

is to put their head in the sand, and hope it goes away,” says Snyder. “It probably never will happen (here), but if it does, be prepared. “Ever since San Bernardino, a clear illustration of just how dangerous homegrown terrorism can be, we started formulating a strategy to train businesses on how to act if they encounter an active shooter,” says Snyder. “Our team will come out and go through a lesson plan, teaching the principles of run, hide or fight — the backbone of what we do. We suggest ways to make the business safer, whether to secure a door, emphasize the right exits, or lots of other little things that are cost-efficient, that every business can do.” In January, Martin County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) were their own guinea pigs, testing their lesson plan among their own staff. YOU’RE NOT JUST A NUMBER Habitat for Humanity going strong for 30 years and building faith Cynthia Warren
FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
MARTIN COUNTY — On Friday, March 11, Habitat for Humanity in Martin County will celebrate 30 years of building on faith. Since 1986, Habitat for Humanity has helped local people own their own home. Some may wonder, how did such a gracious organization start? In 1976, the foundation was laid for Habitat for Humanity International, by Millard and Linda Fuller from Georgia. According to habitat.org, “former President Jimmy Carter and his wife started the Jimmy Carter Work Project in 1984, which kicked off with a trip to New York
City.” Ten years after Habitat International, Martin County residents were fortunate to have leaders from the Methodist Church on Kanner Highway, such as Larry Crary, to lead the way in helping others with repair work and organizing Habitat for Humanity locally. Margot Graff, Habitat’s executive director said, “We don’t give a hand out, we give a hand up.” Over the past 30 years, Habitat in Martin County has completed 120 new and rehabbed homes. In addition, 193 homes have been brushed with kindness. “A Brush with Kindness” involves

PALM CITY — Cassandra Davilmar is a busy junior at Martin County High School, but she has accumulated hundreds of hours of community service at the Boys & Girls Club of Martin County’s Palm City branch. She has been a member there since she was 9 and now helps mentor younger kids. At the Club, she has served as president of the Torch and Keystone Clubs and hosted the September 11 tribute to law enforcement. She also volunteers at the Treasure Coast Food Bank, the Children’s Museum and other organizations. Her high standards and dedication to the community are two of the reasons why the Palm City club has nominated her for Youth of the Year in Martin County. She will compete against youngsters from other Martin County branches. The Martin County native takes honors classes and is in the Health Sciences program to get her nurse’s aide certification before she graduates from high school. She hopes to attend in state and plans to major in biology and become a pediatrican. Cassie, as she is known, is active in a number of school clubs and societies. She is a member of the Health Occupations Student Association, the service club Key Club, National Honor Society and Sigma Phi, another service organization. The young woman spoke recently about the honor of being nominated. “I started at the Boys & Girls Club when I was young,” she
said. “My mom put me there. Hopefully, (now,) I am a mentor. During Power Hour, I help the kids with homework. I volunteer during Healthy Habits, where we talk about healthy foods and snacks.” Cassie credits her mother, Macdalie Aumoithe, of Port St. Lucie, and her father, Gaspard Davilmar of Stuart, with helping her and her two sisters, one older and one younger, find the right path. “They taught me to keep my eye on the prize and to know where I’m going,” she said. “Make the right choices, and if you put your mind to it, you’ll succeed.” Barbara Cross, branch manager for the Palm City Boys & Girls Club, nominated Cassie for the award. In her letter of recommendation, Cross spoke about details Cassie was too modest to mention. “She is an amazing role model for our younger members and shows patience when volunteering and assisting Club members with homework and projects. Cassie has been integral to the success of our teen program. Over the summer, she was able to assist staff with its implementation, due to her knowledge of the program. “I highly recommend Cassie Davilmar for Youth of the Year. She shows true leadership and good character in our Club every day. Cassie will reach her full potential due to her drive and determination.” So often we all wring our hands and talk about youngsters in the same breath as we talk about bad news. There are other outstanding young people like Cassie Davilmar. If you know of one, please let me know. Each story deserves to be told.

Natural gas pipeline prompts questions Letter to the Editor: I am responding to Bruno Moore’s article titled “Proposed natural gas pipeline will fuel Martin Clean Energy” (February 26, 2016, edition). According to the article, FPL says the pipeline is a pivotal tool in meeting the demand for natural gas in Florida. The Southeast Market Pipeline Project is a 126mile extension of the Sabal Trail Transmission that will carry natural gas from a Central Florida Hub to FPL’s Indiantown plant. The Sabal Trail Transmission, a joint venture of a subsidiary of FPL’s parent company, NextEra Ener-
gy Inc. and Spectra Energy, will consist of 480 miles of pipeline stretching between Alabama and Florida. As an aside, according to the United States Department of Energy, the Floridian Natural Gas Storage facility in Indiantown will receive natural gas from the Gulfstream and FPL lateral pipelines. The gas will be liquefied for transport by rail and truck to Florida’s deep water ports for export. Our neighbors to the north have serious concerns about the Sabal Trail pipeline and the risks it presents to our environment, especially in view of a report published by the United States Environmental Protection Agen-
cy. According to the Report, the pipeline route is not appropriate and the risk of the environmental impact of the route outweighs any benefits. The EPA notes that there are numerous locations in the state of Florida that are specifically identified as being at high risk and subject to profound adverse impact, including the Echo Plantation/ Suwannee River HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling) crossing, including the State Park, the Falmouth Springs and cave system, among many others. The EPA Report expressly finds that there is a significant risk to the Floridan Aquifer, to essential karst formations, and to numerous other environmentally sensitive areas, including wetlands, protected State lands and conservation areas. The Report found that there is a meaningful risk of collapsing or cratering major rivers in the state of Florida through HDD in areas of significant karst terrain and that, if this occurs, the entire
river flow can be altered and the aquifer for entire regions altered. Numerous other findings spoke to the deficiency of assurances provided to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection that the proposed pipeline is in the interest of the people and environment of Florida. The rights of the citizens of Florida must be protected. While the Southeast Market Pipeline Project is meeting the demand for natural gas in Florida, the people who live, work and raise our families here also have a right to demand clean water. What good is plenty of hot water if you can’t drink or bathe in it? (References from United States Environmental Protection Agency, Region 4, Atlanta, Georgia, Report to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, October 26, 2015). Cecile Scofield Palm City
Palm City resident speaks out about Costco Letter to the Editor: Costco is planning to open a huge, over 150,000 square foot facility in the small bedroom community of Palm City. A store
of this type and size does not belong in Palm City. In addition, they are planning to build a 16 pump gas station with a 90,000 gallon fuel storage capacity close to Bessey Creek.

OUR MISSION We are here to provide our readers with completely unbiased news coverage. Fun and entertaining features about the communities in which they live. For our advertising partners we pledge to provide the most complete consultative and marketing programs possible for the best return on their investments.
The location being considered is in no way, shape or form a commercial/retail area and sits smack in the middle of many residential communities and is close to a middle school. There are no similar stores in all of Palm City. Great care was taken when Palm City was developed to keep residential and commercial areas separate from one another. The proposed location also contains sensitive wetlands which will have to be disturbed in order to complete this project. This primarily residential community will be inundated by many trucks and tractor trailers daily to keep the store adequately stocked. There will be thousands of cars coming into the neighborhood each day from areas as far away as Jupiter, Port St Lucie, Okeechobee, Vero Beach and Sebastian as this store will be the
only Costco located between the one in Lake Park and the store located in Winter Park. Costco prides itself in being what’s considered being a good neighbor in areas where they build their stores. If this is true, they will choose another location for this store. I implore the County Commissioners, Growth Management personnel, school board members and all residents of Palm City to do everything in their power to stop this project. Costco belongs on US 1 where stores such as BJ’s Wholesale Club, Lowes Home Improvement, Target, Sam’s Club Home Depot and Walmart are located. Over 1700 people have joined the Facebook page “Stop Costco at 714 and High Meadow”. Jim Serra Palm City resident

HABITAT from page 3 things like weatherization, door and window repairs, and exterior preservation. There is sweat equity for home owners regardless of the program. New owners work side-by-side with volunteers. In addition, Habitat helps seniors with critical repairs, aging in place, and ramps, to enable them to stay in their homes. “Everyone should have a decent place to live,” said Graff. It takes an average of 1,500 volunteer hours to build one house. Businesses and anyone over the age of 18 can volunteer for Habitat. Habitat Board members are also volunteers. The Methodist church and many other local churches also volunteer with Habitat. Anyone interested in volunteering should call Habitat for Humanity at (772) 223-9940 or visit www. habitatmartin.org. In 2015, Habitat received 492 applications from local people. “Between 10-12 homes are built in a year. It takes approximately 20-30 months for a new home owner to move in to their new home,” said Graff. Applicants must live in Martin County. Some qualifiers for applicants to be considered are substandard housing, paying high rent, and overcrowded. Selected applicants have to complete 12 classes to maintain homes and be financially healthy. “We teach
homeowners strength and self-reliance,” stated Graff. Applicants can expect to pay $1,500 down for the first year of taxes and insurance. The CBS home takes approximately 5 to 6 months to build. Local businesses donate many of the materials needed to help as well. New home owners will pay approximately $600 a month on an interest-free mortgage, in return for their 300 hours of sweat equity. At move-in, there is a home dedication for the special occasion. Graff exclaimed, “It is such a heartfelt moment!” The upcoming 30-year celebration will be held in Habitat’s new Restore building, on U.S. Highway 1 in Jensen Beach, in the Community Events room. The room is 2,200 square feet with more than 80 feet of wall space filled with photos honoring the last 30 years of Habitat’s commitment to helping local people own a home, as well as showcasing many volunteers and donors. The new community room is open for other non-profits and businesses to hold meetings and training sessions. Habitat is currently working in Carter Park in Indiantown, Banner Lake in Hobe Sound, and Golden Gate in Stuart, according to Graff. For more information on the upcoming 30-year celebration, housing, volunteering, or how you can help financially call Habitat for Humanity at (772) 223-9940 or visit www.habitatmartin.org.

MARTIN COUNTY — People who give generously to improve the community often wonder what happens to their donations after they provide their gift. At United Way of Martin County, donors and supporters have the unique opportunity to help decide how United Way funds are invested by serving on a Citizen Review Panel. Each year, United Way raises millions of dollars during its annual campaign and then with the help of Citizen Review Panels, invests those dollars into local programs that focus on improving the community in the areas of education, health and financial stability. Panel members collectively evaluate each nonprofit program requesting funding from United Way, tour program sites and listen to presentations that reveal how the agency operates and how it plans to utilize funding. This evaluation ensures that community donations reach programs that are best suited to meet diverse local needs. Volunteers consistently call Citizen Review Panels the most rewarding way to learn about
local non-profit programs. Kimberly Perron has served on United Way of Martin County’s Citizen Review Panel for five years and eagerly awaits the opportunity to visit more programs again this year. “The Citizen Review Panels provide an intimate look at how United Way’s partner agencies operate, and every single organization you visit will pull at your heart strings,” she said. “It’s inspiring to watch the grassroots organizations blossom from a great idea into agencies that are making huge impact and changing people’s lives right here in our community.” Perron’s volunteer service on the Citizen Review Panels led to a leadership role on the United Way board. “I felt so strongly about the value of the Citizen Review Panels that United Way asked me to step up and take a leadership role on the board and then to become the chair of the fund distribution committee,” Perron said. “It’s been a truly meaningful experience, both professionally and personally.” Any Martin County resident who would like to serve on a Citizen Review Panel call (772) 283-4800, ext. 221 or email chodnett@unitedwaymartincounty.org.

TREASURE COAST — State Sen. Joe Negron is slated to become the next president of the State Senate. If he wins reelection. It’s déjà vu 2014 for 2016. Democrat Bruno Moore is taking on Republican Negron for what will be the newly minted 25th District. Moore challenged Negron for the District 32 seat in 2014. The new district includes much of what is now 32, but will also include parts of Port St. Lucie now in District 21, Sen. Denise Grimsley’s district. That’ll include St. Lucie West and Tradition. So the election rematch comes with the twist of new voters. “I work two jobs to make ends meet, just like a lot of people throughout the Treasure Coast,” Moore said. “There’s nobody there in Tallahassee to say these are my people and I’m here to represent them.” Moore is familiar to many for his

ant for the district to reach them before their first days of school. “The biggest factor leading into the 47 percent not being able to read at grade level is school readiness,” Ferraro said. Or lack of school readiness. He said there are a number of programs in Martin County that are proving to be effective at getting children ready for school. Some serve at-risk populations. “There are programs in our community that are working, but they’re very narrow,” Ferraro said. The problem, he said, is each of the programs have populations they serve, and no one is coordinating efforts to broaden their reach. Ferraro sees a natural leader to take that role — the school district. He said the district must shed any ideas of being responsible for children only after they’ve gone to their first days of class. “They need a leader, and the leader needs to be the school board,” Ferraro said. If elected, Ferraro said he’d aim to throw open the Martin County School Board’s doors to listen to and learn about school-readiness programs, and help coordinate their efforts. Additionally, he said the district needs to get more involved in summer programs, because knowledge is perishable. “Over the summer, children are not gaining ground in reading, they’re actually losing ground,” Ferraro said. “We’re not going to have school throughout the summer, but there are programs available, enrichment programs. The school system needs to get children involved in that.” Additionally, Ferraro said if elected he’d aim to make the Martin County Schools adopt a common practice among the most successful companies — head hunting. That is aggressive, targeted re-

he’s a regular contributor. Moore said that while he’s covered government during his reporting career, it never was a great love of his. Not until 2012. In 2012 Moore worked locally on President Barack Obama’s campaign. Moore said that helped him see the majority of Republicans and Democrats share many things in common. One of them is most struggle to make ends meet. Another is a sense of frustration that often it seems answers to problems are buried in political wrangling. “I related to a lot of what these people are going through,” Moore said. The 44-year-old said the biggest
Josh Ferraro cruiting. He said that teacher pay differences throughout the state are largely negligible, but Martin offers a quality of life that prize-winning innovative educators would find enticing if they knew about it. “Recruiting them is not enough,” Ferraro said. “Once they get here, we need to keep them here.” That, he said, can happen if educators feel they’re making progress in their field, learning and growing. Ferraro said he’d emphasize professional development programs for teachers and administrators. Ferraro is a lawyer. He’s married and has one child who’s 6. Michael DiTerlizzi currently holds the District 5 seat. He’s not announced a reelection bid. Larry Green is so far the only other announced candidate. Ferraro is planning a campaign event on March 17, St. Patrick’s Day. Details are being worked out at press time. He said additional information will be posted on his campaign’s Facebook page. issue facing the newly forming State Senate district is no news to anyone. It’s ending Lake Okeechobee discharges and restoring the Indian River Lagoon’s health. “The estuary really trumps them all,” Moore said. He said damage to the Indian River Lagoon hurts St. Lucie and Martin counties on numerous levels, financial and ecological. “There are species (in the lagoon) that are found nowhere else in the world,” he said. Moore said he’s not going to put forward a particular plan for ending Lake Okeechobee discharges and speeding lagoon restoration during the campaign. He said

that’s been done, done and done. And the discharges continue damaging the lagoon. “There’s been millions and millions of dollars appropriated to lagoon restoration, and we just saw twice as much discharge,” he said. Rather Moore said his promise is that, if elected, he’ll make sure there’s a parade of scientific and engineering experts through the Capitol Building making sure that no one there can claim ignorance about how to fix the problems. “I will listen to experts that are apparently not listened to (in Tallahassee) and try to convince my colleagues in the Senate to say we need to follow the advice of these experts,” Moore said. Another important issue facing the district, Moore said, is improving educational and employment prospects for youths. “Back in 2014, I spent a lot of time in the inner city of Fort Pierce and I was appalled by what I saw,” he said. Unemployment leading to despair and crime. “These kids, they’re craving something,” Moore said. He said he’d like to talk to the business community to develop

MARTIN COUNTY — Supporters of Future Farmers of America and 4-H Club came out to the Martin County Fair over the past weeks and the program is going strong. Ruth “Ski” Pietruszewski, Martin County Tax Collector, avidly supports the Youth Livestock program every year at the Martin County Fair. “Supporting our youth and letting them experience the success and learn the value and rewards that come from putting forth that extra effort, hard work, and determination builds a stronger America,” said Pietruszewski. “The youth program provides constructive
activities for teens that teaches them personal responsibility, how to think, plan, and reason, how to make choices and decisions, and how to be business-minded and industrious.” The learn-by-doing approach develops life-skills in our future food producers showing them how to make a living and opening them up to opportunities. The program teaches the students how to manage their money, which is just as important as teaching them how to earn it, commented Pietruszewski. “I am proud to help these fine youths by purchasing a hog at their auction, and my deceased husband would be proud of me continuing to support one of his passions,” said Pietruszewski.

then, MCSO has campaigned on Facebook, through the Chambers of Commerce, and at Homeowner’s Association meetings. “I think there’s going to be more desire for it, the more people become aware of it,” says Snyder. The program has been so successful that a couple of weeks ago, Pasco County Sheriff’s Office expressed interest in adopting the Martin County syllabus. The workshop consists of defining what an active shooter is, developing the business’s emergency action plan, discussing the “Run, Hide or Fight” strategy, and detailing what to expect when law enforcement arrives. Regarding the latter, Snyder says, “S.W.A.T. isn’t going in to assist the wounded. They’re going in for one reason and one reason only, to get that active shooter neutralized.” “Run, hide, or fight” is a mantra famously coined by a public-service video that the Houston Mayor’s Office of Public Safety produced in July 2012 with Homeland Security, after the Aurora, Colorado shootings. The PSA advises a clear plan of action for bystanders caught in the midst of an attack: If you can run, run. If you can’t run, hide. Fight as a last resort. Additional tips like leave your belongings
behind if you run and silence your cell phone if you hide help point out tactics that are usually overlooked in a state of crisis. Within the last year, Martin County has been at the vanguard of emergency training exercises. November 19, the Sheriff’s Department teamed up with the Florida Department of Corrections to simulate a live prisoner escape. Prison guards posed as escaped inmates, and with the help of aerial surveillance and the department’s K-9 unit, MCSO was able to apprehend the “escapees” within two hours. Earlier in November, MCSO, as well as Martin County Fire Rescue, Florida Department of Health in Martin County, and Martin County Health System, participated in a biohazard drill led by Homeland Security (DHS). Under the Project Bioshield Act passed in 2004, every year DHS picks a region of the strategic national stockpile (SNS) to test preparedness and response capabilities in the advent of a bioterrorist attack. “The SNS is located in several caches around the U.S.,” says Scott Davis, president of Critical Infrastructure Support Group, and a contractor with DHS-FEMA who helped lead the exercise.

SHOOTER from page 14 “The SNS consists of medical supplies, antidotes, and surgical equipment. The (Bioshield) exercise ran over a period of days, and it entailed escorting the SNS antidotes from the distribution center into the county, setting up a local distribution site, and distributing to first responders and hospitals.” The drill, which staged a contamination site at Witham Field in Stuart, enlisted the help of 50 students pretending to be affected patients, and emergency response was coordinated with S.W.A.T. and HazMat. Municipal entities like the Courthouse and School District have been undergoing specialized training in active-shooter response for years, but the latest MCSO program is one of the first occasions where the county at large can benefit from the expertise of response professionals. Mark Cocco, safety manager of Martin County Schools, says he fully supports this latest program. “Anytime everybody’s ready, properly trained, and thinking about the possibility of such an event, there’s no downside to that. The biggest mistake is complacency.” The School District has been operating under

the National Incident Management Standard since 2002. While many of the active-shooter attacks that have terrified local communities — like the San Bernardino attacks, the Aurora shootings, and the June 2015 Charleston church massacre — have been fueled by extremist ideology, they have also involved elements of personal vendetta. Snyder says their new training doesn’t just focus on terrorist attacks. “If you’re an active shooter, you’re an active shooter, whether a jilted lover, an upset ex-employee. It doesn’t matter why you’re there.” Davis says that more than likely an active shooter would come from within the community: “If you’re speaking on terrorism in the United States, I feel it would be an internal extremist. As much as a lot of people hate to admit it, the government does a pretty good job at protecting what we have. More than anything, our awareness would be homegrown (perpetrators) who have gotten fed up with something.” If you have a business as small as five employees that you think can benefit from the active shooter training program, please contact the Martin County Sheriff’s Office at (772) 220-7000.

REFUGE from page 18 lief stations. Keepers patrolled the uninhabited beaches after storms to offer assistance and shelter to shipwreck survivors. Houses of Refuge were incorporated into the Coast Guard in 1915. Also occupied by the Navy during WWI, the Navy built the lookout tower on the property and patrolled the beaches at night on horseback, in search of German submarines. After World War II the Houses of Refuge were decommissioned and sat abandoned to the elements. The buildings and 16.8 acres were purchased by Martin County, in 1953 for $500. The Historical Society of Martin County was formed to operate the property as a museum. In 1955, over 2,000 residents attended the Grand Opening. This House of Refuge became known as the Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge after a nearby shoal of Anastasia Rock. Legend has it Don Pedro Gilbert, operating as a Columbian Privateer worked these waters in his black schooner The Panda. Gilbert and his crew were tried in a maritime court in Boston and hung in 1834. But today it is always amusing when visitors stop by looking for a cocktail at Gilbert’s Bar. In 1955, The House of Refuge was the home of a Head Start Program for sea turtles. With the recovery of the turtle population the program
was discontinued in 1989. After 27 years many people still visit the museum expecting to see turtles. In 2004, the House of Refuge was ground zero for Hurricanes France and Jeanne. Much of Hutchinson Island was devastated, but the House of Refuge remained rooted in place. With a face lift and the addition of a new patio, the House of Refuge stepped into the future as a historic house museum, and wedding venue. New memories continue to be made as this historic site lives on. The local icon, it is maintained by the Martin County and administered by The Historical Society, dba Elliott Museum. Located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River the buildings require constant maintenance to insure their survival. The cedar shingle roofs were recently replaced and the buildings are receiving a new coat of paint. Donations are being collected to replace rocking chairs on the porch overlooking the ocean. To donate to the up-keep of the House of Refuge contact Historic Site Manager, Linda Geary, at (772) 225-1875, or email lgeary@elliottmuseumfl.org. The House of Refuge is located at 301 SE MacArthur Blvd. on south Hutchinson Island in Stuart. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Website: www.houseofrefugefl.org.

But in the final months when Mom’s condition got worse, her doctor recommended Treasure Coast Hospice. They provided expert care for Mom, supported our caregiving and guided the whole family. CARBO from page 1 tunity to compete in regional and national competitions with NATS. Sydney has performed the national anthem at Palm Beach Polo tournaments since 6th grade, as well as having had the honor to sing before visiting senators and dignitaries. Sydney says she’s living her dream. Currently a freshman at Palm Beach Atlantic (PBA), she says one major factor that led her to the program, besides being close to her family and saving money for the future, was that she yearned to study with Marylin Mims, a celebrated Metropolitan Opera soprano who teaches at the college. After PBA, Sydney says she’s interested in attaining a Masters in Opera from Indiana University. Terry Barber, who organizes Palm City-based Artists for a Cause (AFC), has worked with Sydney for four years, and says that she is not only exceptionally talented but also has a generous heart. “She puts her heart into her talent and interest in the community. Her work with AFC is a perfect intersection of her beautiful intention and outlook.” AFC is a non-profit that helps visual and performing artists to meet a critical need in the community, collaborating with church choirs and high schools to con-

AFC hosts a regular Salon Series, designed to solicit sizable donations from benefactors, and Sydney with a few other singers was hand-picked by Barber to represent the organization and showcase her talent. While Sydney was finalizing in the NATS auditions, her 17-yearold sister Gabby was bringing home trophies of her own. An avid equestrian, Gabby has been participating in the Big Lake Trail Riders Association (BLTRA) Saddle Series this year, and after four shows, she and her mount Snowy
are third in line to win a new saddle. Last November, Gabby took home six 1st place and two 2nd place titles, and on Feb. 20 she was awarded the second most points in the entire competition. On Nov. 21st, Gabby rode in a jackpot barrel race at Rubidoux arena in Fort Pierce and got 2nd place in a pole bending competition against 50 other competitors. “She started riding Snowy only a couple of months ago and they immediately clicked,” says Palm City-based trainer Katelyn Gitsch-

ier. “For most people, it takes a while to get to know a horse, and Gabby just got on her and started riding her so well. Now every show she goes to she makes clean, great competitive runs. I think Gabby and Snowy are really confident with each other. When Gabby gets on her, Snowy switches gears and turns into a completely different horse. They become a really fierce team.” Snowy, a Florida cracker horse and appaloosa mix, just under a meter and a half in stature, belongs to Kristin Maynard of Okeechobee, and Gabby was only meant to tune her up for Maynard’s son, Jack. When they immediately found their destiny together, Gabby began taking Snowy to the races. “I knew I loved riding horses when I was seven,” says Gabby. “That’s all I ever wanted to do is go to the horse barn. I’d go every Saturday morning for a riding lesson and I’d spend my whole week there, feeding and brushing the horses.” Fifteen-year-old Faith Carbo also competes in the arena. Gabby and Faith are inseparable, says Gitschier. “They complement each other and have such a good routine together.” When they grow older, Gabby says they dream of going to the National Finals Rodeo
www.YourVoiceWeekly.com and eventually opening an equine dentist practice together. For the time being, Gabby plans to apply to Murray State University in Kentucky for their rodeo team. The whole family is incredibly close-knit. Sydney says that when growing up, she would often rather spend her Friday nights at home with her family than going out with friends. “We did everything the other did,” says Sydney. “Gabby and Faith took singing lessons at one point. I took horseback riding at one point. Gabby and I did dance classes together. We kind of figured out whose talent was what, and did a lot together.” Judy Carbo, the girls’ mom, said 12-year-old Keira is also all over the place with piano, vocal, and ballet classes. The family has always been supportive and compassionate of her and her sisters’ talents, says Gabby. She adds that it was her loving family and Catholic upbringing that helped influence her affinity for animals. “We always tried to teach the girls that God has given them their gifts to be used for His greater glory,” says Carbo. “Talents are useless if they’re not aimed at helping others in need.” The future is a wide-open tract for these astounding young ladies, and it should be truly inspiring to see where their exploits take them.

MARTIN COUNTY — As part of construction preparation for Martin County’s Bathtub Reef Beach renourishment project, the pipeline that will be used to pump sand from nearby flood shoals was placed in the St. Lucie Inlet on Thursday, Feb. 18. Boaters are advised to use extreme caution when traversing the St. Lucie Inlet and travelling to the sandbars. Parts of the pipeline may be submerged at one point in time and may be above water a short time later as the full pipeline corridor is positioned properly in the water. Buoys mark the pipeline every 33 feet and boaters need to remain within these navigable marked areas to ensure safe navigation and prevent accidents. The pipeline will be used to transport sand from the St. Lucie Inlet to Bathtub Reef Beach and Sailfish Point as part of the County’s beach re-nourishment project to create a new and improved Bathtub Reef Beach - one of Martin County’s favorite beaches. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is funding nearly 40 percent of total project costs through their Beach Man-
RATES
Come Ride With Us
agement Funding Assistance Program. Martin County and Sailfish Point will each pay 50 percent of the remaining project cost. A FEMA reimbursement from hurricane damages sustained in 2012 is also under review and may provide additional funding. Sand will be dredged from the flood shoals and the impoundment basin of the St. Lucie Inlet located immediately south of these beaches. This will help maintain the safety and navigability of the Inlet for local boaters. The sand will then be piped to the beach and distributed from that point across 4,900 feet of coastline, from just north of Bathtub Beach and extending south into Sailfish Point. This approach provides a high quality recreational beach, increased storm protection and is designed to protect the integrity of the fragile Sabellariid worm reef that serves as both a critical marine habitat and protective barrier at Bathtub Beach. Part of the project will restore at least 100 parking spaces in the Bathtub Beach parking lot which had been lost by beach erosion. For more informatoin visit www. BathtubBeachMartin.com or call coastal hotline (772) 221-1387 or email coastal@martin.fl.us.

STUART — Barry Day has such imposing credentials that a reporter might be intimidated. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a trustee of the Noel Coward Foundation. Queen Elizabeth II awarded him an Order of the British Empire “for services to British culture in the United States.” You might be intimidated, until you talk with him and hear his self-deprecating humor and dry wit. Day is the author of numerous books but he is also an actor and director, putting together musical revues celebrating the works of some of America’s greatest composers. Last year, Lee Bell at the Kravis Center introduced Day to John Loesser over lunch. The result was last year’s “More of Loesser” at the Lyric Theatre. This year, Day returns with a cast of Billy Stritch, Marissa Mulder and Klea Blackhurst in a tribute to John Kander and Fred Ebb, the duo who wrote “Cabaret” and “Chicago.” It’s called “Kander & Ebb…And All That Jazz.” Barry Day spoke about why a Kander and Ebb show seemed right. “They pick up where the Great American Songbook begins to fade,” Day said. “It’s past (the time of) Gershwin, Berlin and Cole Por-

TREASURE COAST — The Emerson Center is inviting the community to welcome Russian Pianist Sergey Belyavskiy to Vero Beach, as he takes the stage for a 90-minute concert on Thursday evening, March 24 at 7 p.m. While Belyavskiy has played previously in the United States, specifically at Carnegie Hall in 2011, this will be his inaugural trip to Florida. The concert is made possible by the generosity of an anonymous host. The Moscow born 22 year-old accomplished pianist will perform concert pieces of classical and modern composers including Chopin, Mozart, Debussy, Liszt, Kapustin, and Gershwin. Born to a family of musicians, Belyavskiy began piano at age 5 and by the time he was 9 he was accepted to the finest music school in Russia. At 11, he won his first international competition, and at 12 made his first recital. He finished Central Music School in Moscow State Conservatory under Vera Kameneva in 2011 and is presently studying at Moscow State Conservatory under Professor Elisso Virsaladze. A multi-prize winner of competitions since 2005, Belyavskiy recently won the Grand Prize and became the overall winner of the “eMuse” Online Music Competition — 2015 in Athens, Greece.

Advisory Board Member and partner at Kramer Sopko & Levenstein PA, delivered an uplifting message and thanked the honorees for their dedication to good character and encouraged everyone in the audience to think of the Six Pillars of Character as they go about their daily lives. “If you paint a picture of the person you want as your best friend or the ideal co-worker or boss, that picture will be of someone who practices the six pillars of character every day with everyone they meet,” Sopko said. “The current world would be a much better place if everyone had the same character traits the 25 young people being honored tonight.” The Kordick Awards are named in honor of the late Joe Kordick, founding chairman and the driving force of CHARACTER COUNTS! in Martin County. A panel of independent judges from the community made the final selection of winners based upon the students’ essays, their volunteer and community involvement, how they have
