PALM CITY — Folks at Sawgrass Villas are clamoring for some quiet. A few showed at the most recent Martin Highway expansion project open house — Wednesday, April 1 — asking about getting a sound wall. “It’s horrendous and it’s not anywhere near the traffic we’ll have,” resident Patricia Marks said. Crews started road work in August. By December they erected a 14-foot noise wall on the north side of Martin Highway between

Martin County, BDB, and Indian River State College developed the Business Accelerator Program. Folks have until Wednesday, April 15, to apply for the inaugural session of the 13-week program. Tim Dougher, executive director of the BDB, said the Business Accelerator is part of a larger strategy to put more emphasis on helping local businesses expand than on attracting
new businesses to the county. “The BDB and IRSC has been working together several months to create a program,” Dougher said. The Business Accelerator will have threehour classes once a week. Each class will cover business basics, such as creating business plans, tapping social media, increasing sales, and improving customer service, along with

TREASURE COAST — Congressman Patrick Murphy (D-18) must be feeling the luck of the Irish. Not even a week after St. Patrick’s Day, he announced his aim to become Florida’s junior Senator in the next federal election cycle, 2016. So, where does that leave the voters who gave the freshman Congressman an overwhelming nod to keep his House of Representatives seat not even five months ago? This is the man who’d become the youngest member of the House in 2012 by the thinnest of margins in what was more a blood sport than election against incumbent Allen West.

“I looked at the issues I’m most passionate about and determined I could be more effective in the Senate on those issues,” Murphy said in a telephone interview. In other words, dirty water. Arguably, dirty water has been one of Murphy’s biggest legislative drivers, and it’s driven much of his local popularity. If he’s got a nickname whispered behind closed doors in Washington D.C., it’s probably “Muddy Waters.” Murphy seems to love giving folks in the Capital Beltway bottles of nutrient-rich St. Lucie River water mucky

Palm City Pony team drives home national win Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

PALM CITY — Fresh off a national win, the ponies are looking across the Big Pond for the next. Team Wind Chase’s driver, Heather Schneider, became the reigning United States Equine Federation’s National Four-inHand Pony Champion at the Live Oak International, held March 18-22 in Ocala. The win lines up Schneider and the ponies to have a shot at going to a big Fédération Equestre Internationale, International Federation for Equestrian Sports, event later this year. “We would be representing the United States in the 2015 (World Driving Championship for Ponies), Sept. 2-6, in the Netherlands,” Schneider said. There are five four-legged team members, Rambo, Cloud 9, Jazz, Patrick, and Supreme Court.

Scouting for self-sufficiency Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER
pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com
PALM CITY — Jeff Atlas is prepared. He’s prepared to lead local Boy Scouts to financial independence. The Palm City certified financial planner has served on numerous volunteer boards over the last 25 years. “Now I am the chairman of the Sailfish District of the Gulf Stream Council of the Boy Scouts of America,” Atlas said. The district covers Martin County. The council also includes Palm Beach, St. Lucie, Indian River, Okeechobee, Glades and Hendry counties. Atlas started in the position supervising eight Boy Scout troops, 11 Cub Scout packs, six Venturing crews, and one Sea Scouts ship in January. He’ll continue in the role until 2018. About 700 families are involved in Sailfish District programs. “Right now the bulk of our funding comes from the Gulf Stream Council,” Atlas said. This doesn’t have to be, he said. “There’re enough people in Mar-
tin County to support scouting,” Atlas said. It costs about $270 a year for a child or youth to be in the Boy Scouts of America programs. There are corporate sponsors and large endowments at all layers of Scouting. Atlas said those sponsorships and endowments help a lot, but don’t cover all the costs of Scouting. “The balance comes from (local) community gifts,” he said. “That’s what we need is those community gifts.” Additionally, Scouts sell popcorn and coupon books. Atlas said the sales do much more than put dollars toward Scouting. He said the project helps children and youths begin to understand how to get along in the social and employment world they’ll enter as adults. He’s seen it with his favorite Boy Scout — his 12-yearold son, Justin, who’s a member of Troop 840. “In the beginning, my son wouldn’t even look at somebody,” Atlas said. “Today, six years later, my son is confident and can look somebody in the eye.” Things like that have inspired

Commissioner thanks customs supporters Dear Concerned Taxpayer, Let me express both my sincere gratitude for your clear and consistent support for the Customs facility proposed for Witham Field, as well as my regret over the recent setback it suffered. Of all the projects to come before the Martin County Commission during my time on the board, none has enjoyed more broad-based community support, presented so little risk to taxpayer dollars and withstood more scrutiny and skepticism than the Customs proposal. It was overwhelmingly studied and vetted. That made its failure to move forward all the more disappointing. Although Martin County’s unemployment rate has steadily improved over the last four years,
it still hovers around 5.5 percent. I would like to see that drop even lower. The marine industry is our biggest employer, with more than 4,000 jobs and a direct annual impact to Martin County’s economy of nearly $700 million. Witham Field is a big job generator, employing more than 1,000 people and providing nearly $300 million annually to our local economy. Of course, the tourism industry, which would be benefited by Customs, touches virtually every aspect of our economy and makes our beloved quality of life possible. Right now, Martin County is saddled with an infrastructure backlog that stands at more than

She’s 8. In addition to reaching out to the community for more local financial support, Atlas is looking for more of its time. “We are trying to rebuild our volunteer membership,” Atlas said. Nationally the Boy Scouts of America has been on an emotional roller-coaster as the nation has undergone numerous social changes regarding homosexuality. Today almost 40 states have gay marriage, and gays have been able to openly serve in the military since 2011. Both seemed unlikely just 10 years ago. Almost two years ago the Boy
LETTER from page 6 $230 million and grows daily. Even with a mix of budget cuts, ad valorem tax increases and feebased services — the latter two of which I oppose — we will barely dent this debt. That is why as policymakers, I firmly believe is it our responsibility to support sound, sustainable initiatives that improve our economy. Customs is one such initiative. It is a low-risk, low-cost way to serve our citizens and boost our local economy. Throughout my time in office, I have worked to bridge disunity and broker agreement. The effort behind Customs, led by citizens such as you, embodied this commitment. I was especially grateful for the members of the marine
Scouts National Council voted to end membership restrictions based on sexual orientation, but kept its prohibition on openly gay adult volunteers and employees. In response to the decision, some religious organizations co-founded Trail Life USA to be a more overtly Christian scouting-like program. As the national Boy Scout policies are coming back into the spotlight after the Greater New York Councils recently hired a gay Eagle Scout to be a summer camp leader, Atlas said Martin has remained largely uninterested from the controversy. “We do not see it at our level,” he said. “We only see boys who are interested in learning.” At any time there are about 15 Eagle Scout projects happening in Martin County. Additionally, programs such as Scouting for Food greatly benefit the community. The Gulf Stream Council raised almost 76,000 pounds of food for local banks last year. Scouts collected about 25,000 in Martin County. For more about local scouting programs, visit www.gulfstreamcuncil.org.
and aviation industries who were willing to invest private capital to ensure the success of the facility. Customs could have stood as a test case to measure the success of future public-private partnerships between Martin County and established local businesses. Despite the most recent defeat of Customs, I continue to hold out hope that this facility will again come forward and get another chance to gain commission approval. In the meantime, please stay engaged on this important issue and feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. Thank you. Sincerely, John Haddox County Commissioner, District 5

He said there are guidelines for what the grants could be used for, capital improvement and equipment, but the BDB realizes that not all businesses work the same. “If a company or entrepreneur comes to us and says, ‘What about this?’ I’m not going to say, ‘No,’” Dougher said. “We’re going to take it to the committee anyway.” For more, call the Business Development Board of Martin County at (772) 221-1380, or visit www. bdbmc.org.

Those completing the program can tap a new economic resource. “The BDB has funding for grants up to $5,000 if (small business owners) complete this program,” Dougher said. He added, “They would come in front of a committee and present their business plan and ideas and say, ‘Hey, I need X amount of dollars.’” The committee, which is still

High Meadow Avenue and Martin Downs Boulevard. Behind the wall is Sunset Trace. At the meeting, Kelly Cowger, project administrator, had bad news for everyone who’s not behind that wall. “There won’t be any more sound walls installed on this project,” she said. Kathleen Dempsey, public information officer, said the $15.7 million project is federally funded, so everything must conform to federal guidelines. She said crews did sound studies before the project to determine what neighborhoods would get sound walls based on a complex formula. “We’re a fully federally funded project, and we can’t spend federal dollars on anything that’s not in the project (plans),” Dempsey said. She added, “(A sound wall at Sawgrass Villas) is not something we can add to the contract.” Resident Bryan McAninley said folks at Danforth are planning to plant more trees and bushes along Martin to dull traffic sounds. “We’re trying to make the best of this situation,” he said. Dempsey said she’d forward requests for sound walls, or additional foliage, to decision makers at the Florida Department of Transportation. She said it’s unlikely that additional studies will get Sawgrass and Danforth sound walls. “We better buy a whole boatload of trees and have a planting party,” Marks said. On April 24 traffic will be shifted to the southern lanes from Martin Downs to Palm City School Road, and the new sidewalk will be opened. With the opening of the sidewalk, pedestrians and cyclists will be able to stay on the southern side of Martin from Mapp Road to Martin Downs. The segment east of Palm City School Road will be closed later for expansion. Additionally, by the end of April a traffic signal at Hidden Oaks

They’re Welsh ponies. They might have no use of award cups, but they’re getting their desserts. Literally. “They love peppermint,” Schneider said. “They got lots and lots of peppermints. They’re getting some time off, some play time.” In addition to competing, Wind Chase does driving lessons and rides, as in carriage rides at weddings. The Schneiders, David and Heather, are from Ohio. “We ended up meeting at a show almost by accident,” David said.
www.YourVoiceWeekly.com Middle School, 2801 S.W. Martin Highway, will start flashing yellow. About two weeks later, it’ll direct traffic. When contractor J.W. Cheatham, West Palm Beach, competes the about 1.9-mile project, Martin Highway will have a central divider, 11-foot lanes, 5-foot bicycle lanes, 4-foot buffers, and 8-foot sidewalks from Mapp to High Meadow. The design is made to complement the segment of Martin Highway east of Mapp Road. In addition to the road widening, workers are building a closed drainage system that will use curb inlets and drainage pipes to move rain water from the road to two new drainage ponds. The pond to the west of High Meadow will be 230 x 500 feet. The one to the east of Palm City School Avenue will be 85 x 500 feet. Their combined capacity will be about 10 million gallons. That water is currently filling swales and heading east toward the St. Lucie River. When the expansion is done, the FDOT predicts motorists will take about 15,000 trips a day for the first year on that segment of Martin. That’s expected to climb to about 33,500 trips a day by 2037. The project could wrap up about five months early. Cowger said — weather and other factors permitting — the project could be done about this time next year. It was slated to continue until September next year. John Haddox, Martin County Commissioner, said he’s been watching the project closely and is impressed by the work. “I am very pleased and I am also cautiously optimistic that I’ll be completed ahead of schedule,” he said. The next open house at the project field office , 3510 S.W. Corporate Parkway, Palm City, will be on June 3. Updates are on the web at www.d4fdot.com/tcfdot/ TC-Martin_CR714_MartinHwy_ MappRd_TP.asp.
David was at a competition getting his ponies ready when Heather showed up a damsel in distress. He trailer had a flat tire. David knew a lot about changing trailer tires, and offered his help. “That’s how it got going on that,” David said. Heather knew she’d found her knight in shining armor. “In ‘99, we got married,” she said. “Shortly thereafter, we moved to Florida and started Wind Chase Farm.” At first the couple only did

When President Barack Obama recently visited the Floridian National Golf Club, Palm City, Murphy was at the airport with a bottle of that tainted St. Lucie water to give to the President of the United States. Murphy took dirty St. Lucie water to the floor of the House in October 2013, too. Murphy told said that as a Senator, he’d have higher ground and a louder bullhorn to proclaim the gospel of saving the St. Lucie and Indian rivers. “(I’d be) looking at Lake Okeechobee from a wider perspective,” Murphy said. A lot of the nutrients the work their way to the Indian River Lagoon via Lake Okeechobee start the journey from East Lake Tohopekaliga and head down the Kissimmee River. Tohopekaliga gets a lot of its water, and damaging nutrients, from Boggy Creek. Florida’s waters are a highly connected system. Drop a coin in one body of water and the ripple travels across the state. Murphy said as a Senator, he’d have more influence over decisions affecting waters that affecting the St. Lucie and Indian rivers. Importantly, he said, as Senator Murphy — if he can woo Florida in 2016 — he’d have more influence over speeding the solution no one debates: that’s restoring the natural flow of the peninsula’s waters southward to the Everglades. No other candidate has announced a bid for the seat Sen. Marco Rubio now occupies. Rubio is counted among the likeliest 2016 presidential candidates. Tod Mowery, a St. Lucie County commissioner, said he may run for the 18th Congressional District seat in 2016, but at press time, no one has announced a candidacy to replace Murphy in the House. The recently-reminted district embraces St. Lucie and Martin counties, along with a sliver Palm Beach’s northeastern side tossed in. Between St. Lucie and Martin counties, there are about 107,000 registered Republican voters. Democrats claim 102,000 registrants. Another 63,000 voters registered in minor parties, or without affiliation. That scratches the power of party loyalty found in other districts. In 2014, the district was counted among “battleground races,” although Murphy handily beat challenger Carl Domino with nearly 60 percent of the vote. The last general election was a sharp contrast to 2012, when Murphy was a 29-year-old political newcomer taking on Congressman West. Not only was
www.YourVoiceWeekly.com Murphy a political newcomer, but he was a Treasure Coast newcomer as well. He moved from Fort Lauderdale and switched party affiliations to run what became an insurgency campaign against West. Once in Congress, Murphy made National Journal’s list of the most independent voters in the House. His lead 2014 campaign ad series was “Patrick Murphy’s independent, like me.” It featured registered Republicans praising the Congressman for being “independent.” Murphy’s bipartisan resume might be what Florida looks for in 2016. The state now has about 4.2 million registered Republican and 4.6 million Democrats. Democrats have been losing ground to Republicans since the 1980s. In 2008-2009, the party’s popularity surged, and there was a decline in registered Republicans. But, Democrats started losing party members in 2010, and saw their 670,000-voter edge start vanishing. The state has about 3.2 million registered voters in minor parties, or without alliance. Murphy has another political strength that could give the Treasure Coast a Senator to call its own: fundraising. About a week after announcing his candidacy, Murphy had raised about $750,000. In Florida’s last Senate race, 2012, Sen. Bill Nelson raised about $13.4 million. Challenger Connie Mack raised about $7.3 million. He seems to be poised to make climate change and raising the minimum wage issues for Republican challengers to take up. One advantage to announcing a candidacy before others is a getting a better chance as writing the campaign agenda. “I think climate change is something that really needs to be addressed,” Murphy said. He noted that the U.S. Global Change Research Program’s most recent “National Climate Assessment” lists Miami among the cities most affected by rising global temperature averages. While about a quarter of Americans are skeptical that global temperature averages are rising, or are skeptical that humans contribute to it by carbon dioxide emissions, almost half believe that the scientific consensus is settled. Another 25 percent are somewhere between the two positions. Florida’s political leadership has been largely silent about climate change, giving Murphy an opportunity to own the issue in a statewide election. “I think raising the minimum wage is a policy I’m supportive of,” Murphy said. “It would strengthen the middle class.” In 2004, Florida’s voters approved a constitutional amendment that raised the state’s minimum wage above the federal

PONY from page 8 driving lessons, but folks were frequently wanting to head into their newlywed lives on a carriage, so Wind Chase started the service. But, competing is the heart of Wind Chase. “It’s a thinking man’s sport, or woman’s,” Heather said. “To watch four (equine) athletes come together and work together, it’s amazing.” The Four-in-Hand competition has three phases. The first is dressage, a chance for teams to show their pomp and polish. The second phase is the marathon, a chance to show their physical prowess. “It’s probably the most exciting phase for spectators,” Heather said. As the name implies, a marathon is a race. But, it’s a race that draws on the about 5,500year relationship between horses and humans. Along the way, we’ve encountered common obstacles. The marathon is about 15 kilometers, around 9 miles, and includes seven obstacles. Each event will have different obstacles. Drivers get to walk the courses to see the obstacles beforehand, but can’t take their
ponies until the event. The third event is the cones phase. This is where teams show their precision. After teams of ponies have had their patience stretched by the other two phases, they have to navigate around cones. Spare room between the cones is measured in centimeters. “The horses come back after a grueling marathon and have to be responsive,” Heather said. “It’s also a timed event.” Team Wind Chase ponies take turns at different positions, drivers and wheelers, during phases. The couple take all five of the team’s ponies to events, along with two carriages. “One is built for precision and another one is built for speed,” David said. Taking five ponies and two carriages to Europe will be an expensive proposition. “Over the years, we’ve been blessed with excellent sponsors and family and friend support,” Heather said. Heather said drivers thrive on adversity. At heart, she said, every driver is an ancient Roman chariot racer. “You hear the name ‘Ben-Hur’ a lot,” she said.

PIPER’S from page 12 renovations include both functional and aesthetic improvements, a wide range of upgrades, outdoor dining, an expanded clubhouse footprint and a new Lifestyle and Fitness Center. More than a year ago, the Piper’s Landing Board of Directors created a Facilities Planning Committee and tasked them with the challenge of developing a clubhouse improvement plan that would meet the needs of existing and prospective members, improve overall property values, provide for the addition of new desired amenities and services, and help Piper’s Landing distinguish itself from
its competition as a premier exclusive private community. The Board of Directors, as well as the management team, are confident that goal is being accomplished through the clubhouse renovation project. The Facilities Planning Committee gathered member feedback through a series of community meetings, a member survey, and many one-onone conversations with residents. The result of those efforts was a plan that received more than 77% support from members. One of the key elements of the plan is the addition of a Lifestyle Center, featuring a fitness area, aerobics and multi-use room, and a dedicated massage room. “The Lifestyle Center enables us to meet a need that many residents
MURPHY from page 10 minimum wage and tied it to the consumer price index. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. The state’s is $8.05. According to Gallup, about 75 percent of Americans favor raising the federal minimum wage to $9 an hour or more. Here again, Murphy seems to be positioning himself as a populist taking ownership of a campaign issue that resonates with a lot of Floridians across party lines. It’s a continuation of what
he’s done on the Treasure Coast. When people turned out in droves to protest Lake Okeechobee discharges in 2013, Murphy showed up. When people turned out to protest the proposed All Aboard Florida high-speed passenger rail, Murphy showed up. Murphy said Treasure Coast voters can rest assured that while he’s running for Senate he’s still the Congressman. “I’m still working my tail off every single day for the next two years,” he said.

The comprehensive renovation plan also expands and improves the dining room layout, expands wet areas and card rooms in the men’s and women’s locker rooms, provides for a longer bar and additional seating in the lounge, creates a casual fire pit area as well as a covered patio for outdoor dining and expands the golf pro shop. In addition, many upgrades to safety and handicap accessibility are included in the plan, as well as a wide range of upgrades and improvements to the structure and décor of the clubhouse. “We are very excited to launch this clubhouse renovation,” said

Harbour Ridge ‘Go Pink’ golf tournament supports Martin Health System MARTIN COUNTY — Over 250 golfers participated in the 10th annual “GO Pink!” Golf Tournament recently held at Harbour Ridge. Chaired by Judi Berwitz and Carol Walsh, the event raised more than $50,000 for the Breast Health Navigator Program at Martin Health System. Encouraged by the “GO Pink!” committee at Harbour Ridge,
many of the golfers sported pink laces in their golf shoes before teeing off to show their enthusiasm and earn extra raffle tickets. Pink balloons filled the clubhouse and all participants were decked out in pink, navy and white. The event included both men’s and ladies tournaments, a ladies luncheon featuring pink food and an evening cocktail party open to Harbour Ridge members. During the luncheon, Lindsay Hansen, a breast cancer patient,
shared her experience at Martin Health System. “From the start, the whole team at Martin Health was always there for me,” Hansen said. “They brought me to the right places, always reassured me and provided guidance and help. I feel very blessed and grateful that there are programs like this out there for me.” Martin Health would like to extend its appreciation and grati-

Having More Retirement Accounts is Not the Same as Having More Money. When it comes to the number of retirement accounts you have, the saying “more is better” is not necessarily true. Avery Mister will go to the finals April 24-26.
Avary Mister of Palm City, a ninth-grade student at Martin County High School and a member of the Oak Haven Farm IEA Team, took second place in the Varsity Intermediate Equitation on the Flat class at the Zone Finals in Perry, Ga. This win qualifies her to compete at the IEA National Finals being held this year in Wellington. Mister will be attending the finals on April 24-26. Mister is a part of the Oak Haven Farm Team that is a member of the Interscholastic Equestrian Association. Completing its first season, the Oak Haven Farm Team competed against other teams across the state of Florida and then onto Regional Finals followed by Zone Finals. There is no need for any rider to own a horse and there is a level of competition for everyone. (www.RidelEA.org) The mission of the IEA is to introduce students in private and public middle and secondary schools to equestrian sports and to promote and improve the quality of equestrian competition and instruction. The Oak Haven Farm Team, which is based out of the Martin Downs Equestrian Center in Palm City, had six riders qualify and compete at the Regional Finals. Two riders then continued on to compete at Zone Finals. One rider, Mister, follows the road to National Finals. Nancy Dunn, Oak Haven Farm Team coach, is proud to start up the first team here in the Martin County area. “I have been wanting to offer a program like IEA to our local junior riders for quite some time. I am excited about our successful first year and the future of team Oak Haven Farm as we continue to grow. All our riders have worked very hard this season with tremendous support from our parents and sponsors. We will be cheering Avary on as she represents Oak Haven Farm at National Finals!” For more information about the IEA, visit www.rideiea.org. MARTIN COUNTY — Jason Robert Brown’s music is everywhere. The movie version of his show, “The Last Five Years,” opened recently and StarStruck Academy Theatre is presenting his musical “13.” The 2008 Broadway production was the first all-teen cast in Broadway history. An interesting note is that singer Ariana Grande began her career in the cast, playing a cheerleader. Jennifer Jones of StarStruck, the show’s director, spoke about the show, which tells the story of a young boy who is preparing for his bar mitzvah while dealing with his parents’ divorce and a move from New York City to Indiana. “I’m obsessed with the show,” Jones said. “I think, in part, it’s because I work with kids. Jason Robert Brown taps into a really true and real place of where teens an pre-teens are. He does an absolutely fantastic job of writing songs they feel.” Jones noted that the rhythms and melodies of the songs reflected the mood of the teens who sing them. “What’s very cool is that so many young rising theater kids are constantly playing 30- to

Auditions key for performing arts student STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
Editor’s note: This is the second of a three-part series following Palm City resident Katie Rodgers as she applies to elite colleges for the performing arts. PALM CITY – After Christmas, the long haul towards college began for Katie Rodgers, a senior at the Pine School, and her mom and dad. First up was a visit to Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, one of the most prestigious performing arts and musical theater programs in the country. Both of her parents went with her and they had the opportunity to visit with friends Philippe Arroyo and Kevin Paul, friends from StarStruck and school. “It was comforting, seeing familiar faces,” she said. “There was a daunting energy. This is the top of the top. This is it. I was really nervous. I thought, ‘This will dictate my whole life.’” Before the audition, Katie sat in the lobby waiting with all the other aspirants. “I told myself, ‘I’m not them. All that really matters is what I do.
Katie and her friend, Kevin Paul. I just talked to my parents and stayed in my own world. Otherwise, I’d psyche myself out.” During the 2 ½ hour process, Katie was asked to sing and perform two monologues. One was Ophelia’s monologue from “Hamlet.” “The woman told me I had a
Photo courtesy of Katie Rodgers great understanding of the text,” Katie said. “We talked about the program. I felt confident in what I did.” The next trip was to New York City, where she would audition for four schools in two days. She and her dad, Mark, made the trip. First up were the Tisch
School for the Arts at NYU and Pace University, “I loved Tisch,” she said. “It was so light and there were costumes everywhere. They told the parents to go, that it would take four hours. The singing was first, and Katie sang “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered.” “The guy reviewing me worked on it (with me,”) she said. “We talked about the choices and changes he made. It was very interesting. On the spot, they wanted to see if you can take direction and execute direction. I took what I learned into later auditions. Then, in a small studio, I did two monologues and answered a series of questions about adversity and what I wanted from college.” They were still not finished. The applicants went into small bathrooms to change into clothes for dancing. “They want to see if you can dance ad how fast you can pick things up,” Katie said. “They did ‘Hot Honey Rag’ from ‘Chicago.’ I always made sure I acted the song so that even if the dance move is wrong, I wasn’t shaky.” Later that afternoon, they went

to see this and bring their kids 11, 12 and older. It will start a dialogue, even if it’s walking out of the theater and the parents say, “Did that ever happen to you?’” Jones said the show really is for every teen. “It’s fun and funny,” she said. “They’ll have a blast, seeing people their age on stage, playing out their lives. There’s the jock, the nerd, the cheerleaders, the best friends. The song, ‘What It Means to be a Friend,” is the crux of the show. It’s what it’s all about, who are my friends, who can I trust. There’s a song, ‘A Little More Homework,’ that is true literally and figuratively. They have more growing up to do. It’s a gorgeous piece.” StarStruck Academy students present “13, The Musical,” April 30-May3 at the StarStruck Theatre, 2101 S. Kanner Highway, Stuart. Research has found that Florida currently lacks 100,000 S.T.E.M. (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) professionals and BGCMC hopes to do its part in creating a more skilled, 21st- century workforce in the Sunshine State. When the program completes, children will hold an exhibit with their finished product. Follow the Facebook page for photos and videos of the program.

RODGERS from page 27 to Pace, which Katie also loved. “Pace is dance heavy, so we danced for two hours. I was sweaty and my makeup was all over. I was so tired, but I just decided to have fun. Then I had to change to my audition outfit. I sang two songs, and they were very nice. After the audition, Bob Klein, a casting director who teaches at Pace, said, ‘You do things in your acting I wish professionals would do.’” The long day ended with her two monologues. “My dad saw my face,” Katie said. “I nailed it. I felt good about
Carnegie- Mellon, but I’m on fire when I’m in New York.” The next day, she auditioned for Ithaca and Syracuse, which were using studios in midtown Manhattan to allow a larger number of students to audition. Katie eliminated Syracuse because she didn’t get as warm a feeling there and the program evaluates students after two years and tells you to change your major if your work is not satisfactory. “I don’t want it to be a competition,” she said. Katie had two hours before her Ithaca audition, but by then, she was more relaxed and very grateful for the preparation she’d

received. “I felt good about it and not so nervous,” she said. “I called Jen (Jennifer Jones, her acting teacher at StarStruck) and told her they went so well. I owe Jennifer ad Peter (Jones) so much. They prepared me so well. I realized once worked I had no reason to be nervous because I was so prepared.” Katie had a brief respite before she went to Chicago to audition for several schools that were using the Palmer House as a base of operations. It was Superbowl weekend, an important time in the Rodgers household, as Mark Rodger is the agent for Russell Wilson, quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks. All of the family know him well. The rest of the Rodgers were in Arizona, but Katie and her mother, Karen, flew to Chicago. “There were snowstorms and we were diverted to St. Louis,” Katie said. “I had an audition at 8 a.m. The guy in front of us had an iPad and we were able to see the last play (of the Superbowl. It was hard to watch, but I said I was not going to let it affect me. We got to Chicago at 10:30. There was another mom and daughter and we traveled on the train to the hotel together.” Her first audition was for Emerson College in Boston. “Instead of dance studios, we were in conference rooms and ballrooms with carpeting,” she said. “It was not ideal. Things went wrong. The accompanist said he couldn’t play my music. I was discouraged after that.” Later, she was a walk-in for the Hartt School, the conservatory at the University of Harford. She did her dance, songs and monologue. “They said they’d love for me to come visit,” Katie said. They accepted me on the spot. It was the best feeling in the world. I loved their philosophy. They’re connected to the Goodpeed Theatre. My mom and I had a dance party in the hotel room. We were jumping around. A weight was lifted and we celebrated with Chicago pizza. It was a fun-mother daugh-
ter thing,” Katie was missing school while she was auditioning and she said she couldn’t have done it without the help of understanding teachers. Still, it took a lot of juggling. The rest of their stay in Chicago, she auditioned for Penn State and the Savannah College of Art and Design. “I could see myself going to each school,” she said. After her acceptance at Hartt, which she had confirmed in writing, things began to take shape. She canceled several interviews where she knew she would go to Hartt over the other schools. Two days before her audition at Florida Sate, she got in to Penn State. She knew she wanted to go up North, so she cancelled the FSU interview, “My fuel was running out,” she said. “I was getting tired.” She was delighted when she got a phone call from Pace, accepting her. It remains one of her top choices. In March, she went on a class trip to the Grand Canyon. “I got to unwind, but there was no cell service, so I heard things sporadically. I got into Ithaca’s acting program, but not their musical theater program. I was on the waitlist for the University of Miami and Emerson and I asked to be taken off Emerson’s list. I’m still waiting for Carnegie- Mellon and NYU. She feels that the last three months have taught her a great deal. “I went in, not knowing what to expect,” she said. “I am ready to compete on another level. It was nerve-wracking and fun. I learned new perspectives, working with professionals. If this is 15 minute (with them), what will four years be?” Now she has to visit the schools and decide what she wants. While CMU and NYU are important, getting into one or both may not change her decision. “Ithaca and Pace were the best two audition experiences,” she said. “I don’t think I want a huge

At Pace, you get to work (in the theater) and you get your name out there, talking with people in the business, Ithaca is a traditional college with football and a campus. She has decided that acting and not musical theater will be her main focus. “I want to be a kick-butt actor,” she said. “I don’t want singing or dancing to go away.” She will visit campuses in midApril, in between her school’s production of “Oliver.” She has to make a decision by May 1. “I know I’ll be successful no matter where I go, but I want a place where I’ll be in a great position and have a good time. It’s very exciting because I’m getting into all these programs. It’s my

They’re my rock.” The entire year has been a learning experience for Katie Rodgers, “I’ve had to make a lot of decisions on my own,” she said. “I need to trust my instincts. I need to learn to say ‘Yes’ or No.’ Usually, when I trust myself, I make the right decision or learn from the wrong one. I’ve worked my whole life to do this and I’ve given up a lot, but I knew what I wanted. Now I get to relax and enjoy my senior year. It’s been a crazy year. I can’t believe it’s over.” Just at press time, Katie sent an email to say she’d been accepted at NYU. The final installment will report on Katie’s visit to the colleges and her decision.
