MARTIN COUNTY — The County Commission voted to send lawyers, guns and money. Well, money and McDermott Will & Emery, a Washington, D.C., law firm. At its last regular meeting Tuesday, April 14, the commission gave County Attorney Michael Durham permission to pull up to $250,000 from a $1.4 million fund it created in February to oppose All Aboard Florida to hire the law firm and start legal actions. The town of Jupiter Island and Citizens Against Rail Expansion in Florida, an All Aboard Florida opposition group, have been working with attorney Stephen Ryan at the firm for several months. “I am wholly in favor of this, while being ever increasingly dismayed that we must go through this,” Commissioner Anne Scott, Hobe Sound, said at the meeting. Commissioner John Haddox, Palm City, moved to transfer the funds, hire the law firm, and start legal actions. Scott seconded. The motion passed unanimously with little discussion. The commission will discuss legal strategies in executive sessions that are closed to the public. Durham told the commission that Ryan has drafted two proposed lawsuits. Last month the Indian River County Commission voted to sue the U.S. Department of Transportation for authorizing All Aboard Florida to issue up to $1.75 billion in bonds before an environmental impact study was completed. Durham said the proposed suits for Martin County are different. McDermott Will & Emery is charging the county

PALM CITY — Music is powerful. Music is enduring. Music and songs can conjure up a memory, an emotion or a moment that might otherwise be lost in time. Just as a lullaby is sung to soothe a child, music can lessen the anxiety of someone who is ill. Music can heal. Artists for a Cause, a Palm Citybased national nonprofit organization founded in 2009, provides several programs and services that support the community through the arts. One of its programs, Therapeutic Arts, offers the healing power of visual and performing arts to people who may not otherwise have access to it. As part of the Therapeutic Arts program, Artists for a Cause sends performers, clinical musicians, and certified music therapists to assisted living facilities, hospital intensive care units, and to those at the end of life through hospice. “The positive impact of music and art has been proven through

research. This program fits beautifully into the mission of A4AC where we are improving communities by using art as a catalyst,” said executive director Terry Barber. The proven effectiveness of art and music therapy lies in their inherent ability to surpass language barriers and achieve therapeutic gains in a safe environment. “Great art has the unique potential to elicit emotion, which is one reason it is so effective, but we also understand the difference between all art — which is therapeutic — and what a certified music therapist can treat, which is why we have a range of services within this program.” The artists who are registered with the Artists for a Cause network are diverse in their talents and ages. An artist does not need to be a certified clinical musician to participate in the program and make a huge difference for the people they serve. A student with a violin can provide some relief

ST. LUCIE WEST — Dr. David Glener of Treasure Coast Anesthesiology started coming to Florida from New York when he was a boy. “We were visiting my grandmother,” he said. “I’d cry when we had to leave because I’d miss my grandmother and Florida.” When he completed his medical training, the young doctor, his wife and infant twins, moved to Florida, where he had been recruited by Martin Memorial Hospital, as it was then known. “We came right out of training,” he said. “It would have been difficult to leave once we were established.” Glener is a graduate of the seven-year medical program at the City College of New York and New York Medical College. He did his surgery internship

ART from page 2 and a positive distraction. Students with great access to arts education, such as those from the Pine School and South Fork High School Artists for a Cause clubs who share their talents at the R.E.A.C.H. facility and Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County teaching visual art to less fortunate children, can produce not only beautiful art, but also provide a much needed creative outlet for at-risk youth who may not be as likely to express themselves with words. Many artists are compelled to use their talents to help others, to heal along bring joy to the community. Artists for a Cause helps make this desire and passion a reality, seeking the best outcome for the artists and those they serve. Jackie Robbins, a professional cellist (who has played in the Atlantic Classical Orchestra and The Palm Beach Opera orchestra locally, as well as playing for Tony Bennett, Bonnie Raitt, Dave Matthews, and more) has been very involved in the Artists for a Cause network. She recently went back to school and has received her Level 1 Clinical Musician certification. Through a restricted grant specifically to support her work, initially made possible by the Sheldon

PALM CITY — As Eileen Kaplan drove her granddaughters, Melissa and Julia, home to Palm City from the Treasure Coast Hospice Camp Good Grief in Vero Beach April 12, she listened to them sing. They wrote the song at camp to mourn their deceased grandfather, Rubin Kaplan, as a way to honor him and grieve healthily. “I think they both had positive changes,” Eileen Kaplan said. “They loved being there. They really enjoyed it.” Melissa and Julia joined 36 other kids at the annual camp held April 10–12 at Life for Youth Camp in Vero Beach to learn healthy coping skills following the

death of a close friend or family member. Eileen Kaplan said the two wrote letters, rock-climbed, canoed as a chance to get away and enjoy themselves for a while. Jennifer Melvin, Treasure Coast Hospice Youth and Family Grief Counseling manager, said the camp has been running since the early ‘90s, helping kids through the grieving process by grouping them with other children facing similar emotions. “It gets them a weekend with a bonding experience and for the grief process to take its natural process,” Melvin said. “They can be reminded throughout that somebody important in their life has died, that it’s OK to feel the way they do.”

ART from page 5 and Betty Robbins fund for Therapeutic Arts with additional private support, she has been able to use her talents as healing properties to improve the lives of others. So far, she has completed eight therapeutic care services at Treasure Coast Hospice for people at the end of their lives, and in the intensive care unit at Martin Health Systems. She additionally uses her talent in a therapeutic way at assisted living facilities both locally and nationally. Through this special restricted donation, Robbins will complete at least 40 Therapeutic Arts program services and plans to continue as long as donations that support the program are available. “My goal is to help distract, sooth and comfort the patients. Whether I am playing for a group at an assisted living facility or for a hospice patient in the last stages of life, I put a lot of thought into the genre and time period of the songs I play so that those pieces will be relevant and meaningful to the patients,” said Robbins. “One time, while I was playing for a group, an elderly resident stood up and started singing along. She was just belting out the tune at the top of her lungs. The staff and other residents started crying, rose from their seats and started clapping. In all the years, through all the sing-a-longs no one had ever heard her utter a word. On that day I was particularly proud of my efforts to use my talent in a therapeutic way.” There are many artists similar to Robbins who have the ability and desire to use art and music to help heal people but have never been compensated for those efforts. That’s where Artists for a Cause comes in to facilitate partnerships. Support from individuals, corporations and private foundations to Artists for a Cause can be restricted to a particular artist or program. “We want artists to be aware of this opportunity and encourage those who might have access to this kind of support to reach out so that A4AC can become part of

YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS • PALM CITY & TESORO • APRIL 17, 2015• 7 their success in creatively building better communities,” said Barber. “We can offer the tax deductible donation to those who want to support artists’ talent, as long as it fits within the mission of our organization. That is what the industry refers to as ‘fiscal sponsorship’ and it’s a beautiful thing for the artists in our network, and those whose lives they affect. We applaud Jackie Robbins and welcome all donors who want to support her efforts, and those artists who wish to follow suit!” Artists for a Cause is a Palm Citybased, national, nonprofit organization that improves communities using art as a catalyst to achieve incredible results. Some programs help artists and charities get the most out of their collaboration, while others produce results directly, by feeding the poor, healing the sick, or solving other problems through unique artistic solutions. Current programs include Dance for Food, Therapeutic Music Day, A4AC Scholarships and Clubs, Artist Auction Packages and Benefit Concerts — all of which improve communities through artistic endeavors. Among the organizations receiving support from Artists for a Cause Inc. are the Boys and Girls Club of Martin County, Helping People Succeed, Treasure Coast Food Bank, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, House of Hope, Sailfish Point Foundation, Arc Broward, Farmworker Coordinating Council of Palm Beach and more, as well as hundreds of artists in every genre. To learn more, please visit www. a4ac.org, call (772) 419-8778 or email info@a4ac.org. There is free registration for artists, charities, and volunteers on the website. Fiscal sponsorship refers to the practice of nonprofit organizations offering their legal and tax-exempt status to groups engaged in activities related to the organization’s mission. It typically involves a fee-based contractual arrangement between a project and an established nonprofit. This alternative to starting a non-profit allows one to seek grants and solicit tax-deductible donations under the sponsor’s exempt status.

COUNTY from page 1 $765 an hour. In March, the commission approved up to $80,000 from the fund for consultation with Ryan. The vote passed 4-1 with Commissioner Doug Smith, Jensen Beach, opposing. Smith felt the county should seek more options for legal assistance. The county advertised a request for qualifications, but McDermott Will & Emery was the only firm to respond. “The firms that would be qualified to do this work are few, and the few are often conflicted out,” Durham told the commission.

Scott said she believed that was not coincidental. “(All Aboard Florida has) purposely conflicted out many firms who’d be helpful in the action we’re looking at,” she said. In a previous interview, Haddox said the odd number for the county’s opposition fund, $1.4 million, is 1 percent of the county’s ad valorem tax collection. He proposed the amount based on the idea property values, thus ad valorem, will diminish if All Aboard Florida starts traversing eastern Martin County, so it’s the logical yardstick for setting up the fund.

and first two years of residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and completed his anesthesiology and pain medicine training at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio. He is board-certified in anesthesiology and pain medicine. “I have done what you associate with anesthesiologists,” he said. “Most bona-fide pain doctors are anesthesiologists. I treat acute and chronic pain, prescribe medication, recommend and supervise physical therapy, order additional diagnostic studies and perform certain interventional therapies, including epidural steroid injections, sacroiliac joint injections and up to and including spinal cord stimulation.” Among the conditions Glener treats are arthritis, spinal stenosis, herniated disks, carpal tunnel, bursitis and sciatica and even cancer pain. Glener said that most patients start at their primary care physicians when they have pain. “There are sometimes multiple problems,” he said. “Even if it’s identified, they want to know what they can do. That’s where I come in. Each patient has an individually tailored treatment. I tend to treat patients like my family. I try to take good care of people and do the right thing. When you blend good intentions with ability, good things tend to happen. I treat people the way I would like to be treated. “I am an old-style doctor, a dinosaur. People see me ev-

ery single time. I get to know them. They are not just a diagnosis. I have to get to the root cause of the pain. It’s not always straightforward. I do a physical exam and I may order ultrasounds and scans. Then I formulate a treatment plan.” Patients who visit Glener’s practice get to know his dog, Charlie, who’s been a fixture at the practice since he was a puppy. Now 11, the dog works part-time. “He’s like a rock star,” Glener said. “He helps to calm patients, and they bring him treats.” Glener has achieved recognition for his work, serving as a consultant to the U.S. Department of Justice’s Drug Enforcement Agency on the proper practice of pain medicine. He has been a medical expert for the Florida Board of Medicine since 1997. He is a clinical assistant professor at Florida State University’s School of Medicine and an assistant professor at the University of Central Florida’s School of Medicine. “The majority of patients go to their primary care physicians because something hurts and it’s not obvious what’s causing the problem. They’re referred for evaluation and diagnosis. I’m an old-fashioned doctor using 21stcentury techniques.” Treasure Coast Anesthesiology is located at 561 N.W. PALM CITY — Feelings are actually a pretty subjective measure of health. “How you feel is no indication of how healthy you are,” Dr. Thomas Kleinman, owner of Atlas Health & Wellness, said. Kleinman, a trained pharmacist, has been practicing chiropractic medicine for 34 years. He said he’s watched the healthcare industry’s standards for “healthy” declining over the decades. Kleinman said that trend ignores an important fact medical professionals will agree to. “The body will steal from itself to make things work,” Kleinman said. That happens, he said, because of the body building up toxins

and adapting to keep working. “We have tests that can identify toxicity,” Kleinman said. Atlas uses Science Based Nutrition. The program starts with blood and other tests for identifying what growing conditions need to be addressed before they’re actual diseases. As people follow the drug-free recommendations, subsequent tests help determine whether they’re working, or need modification. Kleinman has been in the area for 13 years. He’s from New York City, and studied pharmacology in Gainesville. He said studying physiology was among the most enlightening things he’d done and it made him question the underlying premise of healthcare based

HOSPICE from page 6 Melvin, who’s been running the camp for the past 18 years, said camp counselors help camp-goers with team-building games and healing-centered activities. One of them is called the Expression Wall. “The activity is that they get to identify a lot of the feelings they have,” she said, noting nervousness, anxiety, fear and anger as some of the more common ones. The kids join in small groups small groups and share their feelings and write them on a standalone wall. After they finished covering the wall, they filled sponges with paint and pelted the wall with them, covering the troubling emotions they felt. “Before they throw it, they call out what

Once the board was nearly covered, the staff removed a stencil made of tape, revealing the word “Strength” with the paint surrounding it. “The adults usually see a large transformation from their kids. A lot of them reach a turning point,” Melvin said. “One parent told me that this was the first time they got to say goodbye. “The big responses are one of two things: I wish I had this for myself or I wish this was around when I was younger.” Kimberly said she will be taking her granddaughters to the camp in the future.

The other campers her granddaughters met were with were all friendly and kind, she said. “They exchanged phone numbers. I just thought it was them going away for the weekend, but they really taught them a lot.” Camp Good Grief is held every year by Treasure Coast Hospice. It is $20 per kid or $50 for families of three or more. Melvin said she hopes to add another yearly camp for entire families, but the organization’s bereavement services really solely on donations and grants. So, it depends on future funding. “It’s something we’ve really wanted to do. It’s because we know these families really need it.” Treasure Coast Hospice is located at 1201 S.E. Indian St., Stuart, For more information, call (772) 403-4500 8900 or visit tchospice. org.

For example — “I would say, ‘The nose is running, because it’s doing what it needs to do,” he said. But it’s knowing what symptoms are the body’s natural efforts, and which aren’t. During the time Kleinman was wrapping pharmacology studies, he discovered chiropractic care. “I went in to check it out,” he said. “I got an adjustment by a 91-year-old who was strong and still working.” Kleinman was impressed. He’d always woke with “brain fog.” “The day after I got adjusted, I woke up alert,” he said. “I gained

two hours a day.” The chiropractor told Kleinman about the Atlas orthogonal technique. Not all chiropractic care is the same. The Atlas method focuses on tiny adjustments to the atlas and axis vertebrae, the two directly under the skull. Kleinman said they have tremendous influence on posture. Posture, in turn, has a tremendous influence on health. “It’s very gentle,” Kleinman said. “No cracking and popping. That’s what people think about when they hear ‘chiropractic.’” Most importantly, Kleinman said, his office uses X-rays to determine the effects of adjustments. Many chiropractors don’t. “If you don’t measure, you don’t know,” he said. The center is at 1516 S.W. Mapp Road, Palm City. To make an appointment, call (772) 781-9987.

Robots invade H. Wayne Huizenga Center

PALM CITY — Two robots have invaded the H. Wayne Huizenga Center. Not to fear, these aren’t Terminators, Cylons, or Decepticons. They’re educational. The center is home of the Boys & Girls Club of Martin County. “This is creativity unlike anything else,” Stephanie Redditt, education compliance officer, said. David Vaina, communications director, said 15 children are participating in the robotics program in Palm City. Another 15 are at the clubs’ Indiantown center. The Best Buy Foundation funded the 10-week program with a grant. Palm City’s Joseph Hornberger is the instructor. He’s also an honors and advance-placement

teacher at Martin County High School. “I really enjoy working with the kids in (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) programs,” he said. The children are trying to get the two Mindstorms robots to move four soda cans in a square meter. Redditt said for this program there won’t be a competitive component, but those could happen in the future. Lauren Spears, 11, doesn’t seem to mind that there’s not going to be a robot showdown between Palm City and Indiantown. Her brother was involved in a robotics program and that whet her appetite. “Every night he’d come home with these cool stories,” she said.

Ask the Anytime Gal: Expert answers to your health and fitness questions Question: I was thinking of focusing a bit more on swimming this summer for general fitness and weight loss. What do you think — pros, cons? Answer: Swimming is a fantastic summer exercise and it’s a great way to cross-train. It works all of the major muscle groups and is easy on the joints, too. There is one thing that you need to keep in mind, though. Swimming can be pretty challenging. It actually takes four times more energy to swim than it does to run, so swimming a quarter of a mile is roughly equivalent to running one mile. For this reason, overall duration becomes an issue and this can clearly affect the calorie-burning potential of your workout. Some have also questioned the effect that the water temperature has on overall calorie balance. Appetite seems to increase after swimming in cooler water, which means the calories eaten after exercise may negate the calories burned during exercise. Regardless of what you hear or read though, swimming

Answer: If your wedding is just a few days or weeks away, it isn’t reasonable to expect to make major changes in such a short time. Still, that doesn’t mean you can’t make some progress with a few changes to your diet and exercise program: 1. Cut out empty calories: Eliminate sodas, juice, coffee drinks, alcohol or other beverages with empty calories and look for lower calorie substitutes for staple foods like milk, cheese, yogurt and bread. 2. Exercise: If you already exercise, add intensity to your workouts by adding more time, an extra day of training or by working harder. Focus on workouts that give you the most bang for your buck, such as intervals or circuit training, but be careful when adding intensity to your workouts. Too much can cause an overload injury. 3. Don’t overdo it! Too many brides-to-be go from seden-

tary to two-hour workouts to lose weight quickly and when you do more than your body can handle, you risk burnout, soreness and injury. Exercising for hours a day at high intensities can be just as bad as not exercising at all. For the best results safely in the shortest period of time, consider working with a personal trainer. Question: I’ve been a yo-yo dieter for years, and whenever I start a new exercise program, I always seem to gain a little weight before the actual weight loss process begins. Can you explain this? Answer: Yes, this is actually a pretty common phenomenon. When a sedentary person starts an exercise program, several changes occur in the body in response to this new exercise stimulus. First of all, the muscles can increase in size, and the added protein in the muscle stores more water. The body will also start to store more sugar in the muscles and, again, water storage plays a role here, as well. Several enzymes that process oxygen will also increase in quantity within the muscle cells. And if this isn’t enough, your connective tissues will toughen and thicken, and

your total blood volume can increase by up to one pound within a week. All of this better prepares your body for more frequent exercise bouts, and helps to improve your workout efficiency. At this point, you’re probably wondering what can be done to mitigate these effects? The answer is not much. The key is to be consistent with your workouts, and avoid the scale if you’re likely to get discouraged by what you see. This is simply your body adapting to exercise. Believe me, your weight will trend down in the long run as you continue to exercise. Don’t forget the old adage — good things come to those who wait! ROBOTS from page 14 How does the Palm City Elementary fifth-grader feel about all the math and science it takes to tackle robotics? “Those are two of my favorite (subjects),” she said. “They come easy to me.” Robotics is becoming an increasingly important part of science and the world economy. Robots can do things humans can’t, such as survive yearslong interplanetary journeys. One of NASA’s chief scientists, Ellen Stofan, said at a recent panel discussion that the space agency could find extraterrestrial life within 20 years. If the agency does find life off Earth, it’ll most likely be microbial and a robot like the Curiosity rover will find it. Most of the candidates for microbial life are moons orbiting Jupiter and Saturn. Finding that life, if there, will take an amphibious robot that’s able to do some drilling and to work without quick contact to Earth. Radio signals take anywhere from 20 minutes to more than an hour to reach between the gas giants and Earth. Redditt said that the teams who’ll pull off this feat of robotics engineering are probably children and youths now. “We could have one of those scientists (in the robotics program) now,” she said. “That’s what makes me

excited about bringing robots into the Boys & Girls Club.” The children are learning more earthy skills, too. For example, how to work in teams. Additionally, robots operate in a very literal world. To have one make a peanut butter sandwich requires the programmers think about the fact one must open a jar before being able to get two tablespoons of the food paste. Redditt said that kind of critical, methodical thinking is prized by employers. Especially when things aren’t going as planned. “In robotics (when the robot fails a task), you have to consider why didn’t it work,” Redditt said. She said that’s done by walking the failure backwards. Figuring out what steps were missed to cause the failure and going back to them and starting over. Hornberger said the children are also learning that there’s more than one way to skin a cat. Or, rather, to move soda cans in a square meter. “I hope to have two robots doing the same thing differently,” he said. Vaina said the Boys & Girls Club has done numerous literacy programs. “This is our first STEM program, so it’s a pilot program,” he said, and added, “We want to show to the community, potential funders, that we can run a STEM program.” The center is at 1150 S.W. Martin Downs Blvd., Palm City.

Barn presents classic comedy Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

STUART – “The Man Who Came to Dinner,” by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, is a 1930s comedy about what happens when a thoroughly unpleasant celebrity, radio host, Sheridan Whiteside, slips on a patch of ice as he comes to dine at a home in Ohio. He injures his hip and is forced to make a prolonged stay. During the month he is laid up, he turns the household upside down, insulting his hosts and taking over the phone and the servants. The character of Sheridan Whiteside is based on Alexander Woollcott, a famous theater critic, radio star and friend of Kaufman and Hart. The story goes that Woollcott appeared at Hart’s country home and was an unpleasant guest. When Hart told the story to Kaufman, Hart said that it was fortunate that Woollcott hadn’t broken his leg and been stranded at his home. The Barn Theatre will present ‘The Man Who Came to Dinner” April 17May 3. Trina Mariano is directing the show and making her Treasure Coast directorial debut. “I was in the “1940s Radio Hour” a couple of years ago at the Barn,” she said. At that time, I expressed interest in directing a show there and this was the first show they asked me to direct that my schedule would permit.” Mariano is an English teacher at St. Lucie West Centennial High School.

New director excited about challenge STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

MARTIN COUNTY — There aren’t many women in theatrical management, so the announcement that Kia Fontaine has been named the new executive director of the Lyric Theatre is exciting news. John Loesser, who has led the Lyric for the past 16 years, will become artistic director, focusing on fundraising, public relations and artistic programming. The new positions were announced by the Lyric’s board of directors and took effect April 1. Fontaine, who has been assistant executive director since 2008, will be responsible for dayto-day operations and theater management. Before coming to the Lyric, she served as historic preservation officer and deputy city clerk for the city of Fort Pierce. She is a lifelong resident of the Treasure Coast. Her interest in the arts spans most of her life. “I was 6 when I performed in my first opera, ‘La Boheme,’” she said. “I was a street urchin. It was the Treasure Coast Opera Society. I was also in the Children’s Choir at church. When I performed in the opera, I knew

that what I wanted to do was be on stage or managing.” Fontaine continued to audition and perform in area choirs, plays and operas. “My father started a production company,” she said. “He would rent venues and we would put on shows. In 2001, we met John Loesser during the city of Fort Pierce’s Centennial celebrations. We got to talking. I called John when an opening came up and I had a theater background. He said, ‘Let’s get together and talk.’” We met for coffee. I was working for the city of Fort Pierce. He told me he wanted me to think about it because it was a big change in my life. I slept on it and said, ‘I’m game. Let’s talk.’ He put me in every facet: hospitality, stage management, marketing, contract administration and overseeing the facility and operations. He said, ‘Give me five years and I will train you in the theater.’” Fontaine plans to take things slowly in the beginning. “I’d like to continue John’s legacy,” she said. “He’s done such an incredible job during his tenure. He took it from a small community theater to a well-known, recognized performing arts center. I want to keep the tradition of excellence alive. What is established here is fantastic.”

Kia Fontaine Fontaine said the biggest challenge is maintaining and building an audience. “I want to develop a younger patron and membership base,” she said. “There will be more family programing and arts and education. The challenge is to nurture and develop a younger audience base.” The new director said that the upcoming season will be announced in May and ticket will go on sale to members May 26. “Next year will have a fabulous lineup of shows,” she said. “There’s something for everyone

and a few big names. Memberships start at $35 members get first crack at tickets. It helps support the mission of the Lyric, to provide the community with a home for the performing arts that entertain, educates and stimulates the growth of artistic integrity and experience for everyone,” For his part, John Loesser said he is putting the Lyric in good hands. “I can’t think of a better person in the performing arts world to assume command of the Lyric,” he said in the press release announcing the changes. “In my entire career, I have never known anyone that I could have recommended that would put the Lyric in better hands than Kia, and I look forward to working with her for many years to come.” Writer’s note: I have worked with Kia Fontaine for the entire time she has been at the Lyric, and she has always answered my requests for information or interviews with patience, professionalism wit and humor. She is an asset to the Lyric and it is wonderful to see that tear in the theatrical glass curtain. The Lyric Theatre is located at 59 S.W. Flagler Ave., Stuart. DINNER from page 27 She has a degree in theater from Florida Atlantic University and has performed at StarStruck in Stuart and at the Palm Beach Shakespeare Festival. She has directed shows at Little Palm Family Theatre in Boca Raton and at the Palm Beach Shakespeare Festival. Mariano said that “The Man who Came to Dinner” presented several challenges, including allusions to many events and people of the time who may be unfamiliar to audiences today. “It’s casting a large cast, researching an allusion-rich script, and cutting an originally threeact play,” she said. “We are left with a well-written, comedic period piece. I have set our play in 1935. While in the Great Depression, Americans relied on radio shows and ‘talkies’ to escape from harsh reality for an hour or so. First produced in 1939, this play offers that escape with its quick-witted script and outlandish characters, based on Alexander Woollcott, Harpo Marx, Noel Coward, Lizzie Borden and Gertrude Lawrence.” The cast includes Brian Pecci as Sheridan Whiteside; Rachel Hunt as Maggie Cutler; secretary to the town doctor; Daniel Kies as Bert Jefferson, the local newspaper reporter; Jerre Bolnick as Ernest Stanley, Whiteside’s wealthy host; LuAnn Bolnick as Mrs.

Presents

Rabbit Hole by David Lindsay Abaire

Larger-than-life radio personality Sheridan Whiteside, recuperating from a fall in small town businessman’s home, takes over the entire household in this comic tour-de-force.

Winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize How a family deals or doesn’t deal with the accidental death of a young boy is explored in this touching, surprisingly human new play. The parents, grandmother and aunt all try their best to move beyond this sad event but aren’t necessarily moving in the same direction. “A painstakingly beautiful, exquisitely human new play.” - Backstage “An intensely emotional examination of grief laced with wit, insightfulness, compassion and searing honesty.” - Variety
