MARTIN COUNTY — Of the hundreds of students, parents and teachers who convened for Martin County’s 42nd annual
“Music in Our Schools” (MIOS) showcase on March 29, one honored guest stood out among the crowd: Music herself, in multi-colored gowns. It was a rare concert that brought together all of the district’s best young musicians under one roof to entertain, educate and thrill the public with their varieties of musical experience. The showcase was not only a remarkable testament to the strength of Martin County’s music programs, along with the extraordinary talent of the
students, but also a celebratory pilgrimage that touched the deep impact music has in all our lives. “We want to stress that music is an important part of a child’s education,” says John Willis, choral director at Hidden Oaks Middle School. “We don’t just need to teach logic or math — we also need to teach about emotions and how to empathize.” By the very act of collaboration, the students are taught
MARTIN COUNTY — Sheriff William Snyder said you won’t see him campaigning much. He figures his path to winning reelection is to do a good enough job to earn it. “I love what I do, and I’d be delighted to do it four more years,” he said. Snyder added: “Being an elected official, and being in law enforcement in general, is a calling. Whatever that means, for me it’s a calling. I feel like I have a sacred trust between myself and the people in this community.” Snyder won the 2012 primary election against two other Republicans. He took it with 11,704 votes against his closet rival’s 10,017. He went on to handily win against a write-in candidate in the general election. He became Sheriff in January, 2013. He came into office with four decades of experience in law enforcement, about 12 years in Martin County. Additionally, Snyder understood the process of creating laws. He was a representative in the Florida House, winning his first election for it in 2006. Snyder served three terms in the House. The biggest challenges facing the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Snyder said, are common

PALM CITY — Work on Mapp Road may start next summer and include storm-water management. “We’re looking at doing the design really this year,” Don Donaldson, the county’s engineering director, said in a phone interview. “We’ll get started on it as soon as possible, and construct it next year.” At its last regular meeting, the Martin County Commission gave a 4-1 nod to $125,000 for design work. “It would most likely go out to bid for construction in the summer of 2017,” Donaldson said in the phone interview. He added, “A few months later work would get started.” Commission Sarah Heard voted against the resurfacing and adding bike lanes to Mapp Road. She said the bike lanes, which would add 10 feet of surface, will add to the region’s water woes. “The proposed increase in asphalt on Mapp Road will increase the runoff from the road and end up in the St. Lucie,” Heard said at the meeting. “That’s a fact.” Commissioner John Haddox said the proposed work includes storm-water management, and that will reduce flow through Old Palm City into the St. Lucie River’s North Fork. “In addressing that along with repaving and bicycle lanes, we’re addressing that fact,” he said at the meeting. Heard and Haddox have been at odds over Mapp Road since last spring. Last May Heard voted against a proposed Community Redevelopment Agency, CRA, project to resurface the road between Martin Highway and Martin Downs Boulevard, along with adding bike lanes and improving the swales

Commissioner Sara Heard for improved storm-water management. The proposed CRA work was supposed to form the groundwork for additional progress toward the Mapp Road Town Center Design, a 15-year-old plan to make Mapp more pedestrian friendly and downtown like. Heard complained about the bike lanes adding to storm-water issues at that meeting, too. Haddox supported that proposed project, citing improved storm-water management. In July Heard approved the engineering department’s proposal to do just the resurfacing and adding bike lanes, which is largely funded by a $255,000 Small County Outreach Program grant from the state through the Martin County Metropolitan Planning Organization. That would cost about $300,000. At that meeting Commissioner John Haddox complained that adding bike lanes without the storm-water management elements in the CRA’s proposed work spelled additional flooding problems for the neighborhood east of Mapp Road, and more pollution into the St. Lucie. Heard voted for it. At both meetings the commission voted 3-2 with the same commissioners who voted against one approving the other. The latest proposed Mapp Road work getting started in the summer of 2017 assumes that the project survives the commission’s capital-improvement projects process in coming months. If it does sur-

Mets fans flock to Tradition for recordbreaking season Staff Reports
INFO@YOURVOICEWEEKLY.COM
TRADITION — For everyone involved with the New York Mets, it was a spring to remember. “I’ve never seen crowds this thick in my 18 years here, throughout the course of the season,” said Paul Taglieri, the Mets director of Florida operations. “It was a great spring training.” Still basking in the glow of their team’s National League pennant and World Series appearance last fall, Mets fans flocked to Tradition Field for spring training games like never before. The Mets averaged a record 6,897 tickets sold per game in the 7,000-seat Tradition Field. The 96,552 total attendance for 14 home games was second only to the 97,929 they drew for 16 games in 2008. Last year, attendance for 15 Mets home games totaled 91,328. “We anticipated that we were going to have great crowds starting in mid-February,” Taglieri said, “and everything came to fruition.” Mets fans who came down from
the Northeast in large numbers filled up the hotels and restaurants around Tradition Field. Millie Feliciano, director of sales at the Holiday Inn Express in St. Lucie West, walking distance from Tradition Field, said the area’s hotels also were prepared for the onslaught of Mets fans. “Because the New York Mets got as far as the World Series, the whole area has had so many people came down from New York to see them play,” said Feliciano. “In the past, we’ve had other groups, corporate groups that booked a lot of rooms, but this year 75 percent of our occupancy has been the fans.” Hotel occupancy rates always are highest in March on the Treasure Coast, but hotels were more full than usual this spring, Feliciano said. “It’s been phenomenal compared with previous years,” said Feliciano, who noted that occupancy rates were in the high 90 percents at every hotel in the area. “Our busy season started right

PALM CITY — Palm City resident Mary Jo Horton is a pioneer. The Florida native started at Burdines’s, the Florida department store chain, during the Christmas season while she was in high school and worked her way up to being the first female director of Human Resources in the company. Her title was vice president and she oversaw some 42 stores and was with the company for 35 years. “I broke the glass ceiling for Burdine’s,” she said. “I was fortunate the leadership was open-minded to have qualified people. They were willing to mentor and support me.” When the store was taken over by Federated Department Stores, she found the same support and even in retirement, she is still a trustee of the Federated Allied Medical Trust that oversees medical plans for some retirees. Horton began her career working on Saturdays and attending Palm Beach Junior College. She moved to the Fort Lauderdale store and then to the Miami flagship store. She found time to finish her edu-
cation and get an M.B.A. Horton moved with each promotion she got and retired from the Miami store in 1984. She and her late husband had a home in North Carolina and wanted to be within driving distance of there. “We found Palm City and there was nothing there in 1984,” she said. “It’s an ideal location. I love it here and have lots of good friends. It’s a great place to be.” Horton is involved in many volunteer organizations and she is a Parliamentarian for the Halpatiokee chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Through her mother, she is a descendant of Abraham Cassel, a private in the Revolutionary Army. She is also a direct descendant of Daniel Boone. “His sister is my great, great, great, great grandmother,” Horton said. Queen Margaret of Scotland is also an ancestor. On her father’s side are the Hartwells. Hartwell is Horton’s maiden name. “There’s Hartwell House in Concord, Massachusetts,” she said. “It’s where Paul Revere had a stop to get refreshments while he was making his ride. The house is on the Revolutionary Trail tour.” Horton is a member of the Martin Health System Board, and a

In Rotary, she’s involved with scholarships and with Kiwanis, worked the polls during the recent primary. She is also involved in the Philanthropic Education Organization, an international organization of women who support education for women throughout the world. She is a 50-year member of Soroptimist and a past governor of the Southern region. She serves as parliamentarian of the Stuart club. She is involved in Women in Philanthropy, as well. This past year, Horton was nominated for a Sage Award at the Kane Center, the home of the Council on Aging of Martin
Mary Jo Horton County. The award recognizes the contributions of seniors to the community. Sometimes, Horton thinks about slowing down. “I threaten to go back to work to have free time,” she said. “I like to spend time with my cat, my favorite person to have around.”

OPUS brings their talent to Hawaii
T
his year, Martin County High School’s award-winning choir, OPUS, Outstanding People United to Sing, went to Hawaii. As a junior at MCHS, this is my third year in OPUS. I love traveling and learning about new places; therefore, after having the opportunities to go to New York and Chicago with OPUS, Hawaii was a huge check off of my travel “bucket list.” It is a trip that one may never get to experience in their entire lifetime; yet, our group of 54 choir members, from our small town, had the privilege of reveling in it. Over the summer, when we first discovered that our destination was Hawaii this year, each of us was ecstatic to even have the chance to go. Preparation for this trip meant singing locally for our tickets through fundraising to cover the $2,100 per student. I don’t think the reality that we were going on such an incredible

trip set in, until we finally landed in paradise after our seemingly endless 10-hour flight. In Hawaii, we squeezed everything we possibly could into the fastest six days of our lives. We kicked off the trip by going to Pearl Harbor, where we were able to show reverence for the lives sacrificed, and soak up many facts about the war. It was a tremendous learning experience for each of us, culminated by the experience of returning to sing on the USS Missouri Memorial the next day. Singing on the ship’s memorial had such profound meaning, since our music was able to touch the lives of others present, and pay tribute to the fallen soldiers whom had become

The Stuart/Martin Chamber of
Commerce Political Action Committee released results of a recent survey — conducted the first week of March — that shows if the countywide races went to voters today, the result would likely be the election of Ed Ciampi and reelections of Doug Smith and Anne Scott. Short of that lineup changing by August, there’ll be no new commission majority to break a 3-2 deadlock that’s kept

the CRA largely in limbo since the election of 2012. There’d also be no new majority to bring back customs, an issue Smith — who has the most apparent reelection steam, according to the survey — has hung much of his political game on. There are three County Commission seats in the center pot. Districts 1, 3 and 5. There are nine candidates, all Republican, vying for the seats. That’s three for each race. District 1 has Smith, Jensen Beach, facing newcomer Jacqui Thurlow-Lippisch and a familiar adversary — Henry Copeland. This is Copeland’s third spar with Smith, who’s been in office since 2000. District 3 is a lineup of newcomers Darlene Fuggetta and, more recently, Harold Jenkins, against Scott. This is Scott’s first reelection bid.
District 5, which includes Palm City, has the most intriguing race. Ciampi and fellow challenger Donna Melzer are both oneterm commissioners who held that seat four years each. Ciampi stepped down. Melzer was defeated in her first reelection bid. Haddox was elected in 2012. While commissioners must live in their districts, all are elected countywide. Since there are only Republicans in the three races, they’ll be decided in universal primaries in August. That is unless Democrats, independents or minor-party candidates jump into one or more of the races. If the universal primaries fail to produce winners with more than half the votes cast, the top two vote-getters in each race will go onto the general election in November. In 2014 Martin voters had and declined the chance to switch up the commission. The last election year Ed Fielding, Stuart, trumped Stacey Hetherington and John “Trapper” Schierbaum in the primary and Ron Rose, who ran without party affiliation, in the general election. It was even better, and for a longer period, than past spring trainings.” People living in or trying to travel through the St. Lucie West area on days of games at Tradition Field can attest to the crowds, which were also reflected in the traffic jams around the stadium. Mets fans supported their team in away games, too, boosting attendance by more than 1,000 over the average for Washington Nationals games in Viera or Miami Marlins games in Jupiter. The Nationals and Marlins are the Mets’ two main roadblocks to repeat as champions of the National League East Division. Mike Bauer, general manager of Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, said he noticed that Mets fans swelled the normal crowd by more than 1,000 for a Marlins home game March 13 when Mets’ ace Matt Harvey pitched. In fact, because of the larger-capacity stadiums in St. Petersburg (New York Yankees), Lakeland (Detroit Tigers), Fort Myers (Boston Red Sox) and Orlando (Atlanta Braves), the Mets actually drew a slightly higher total – 96,708 – for the 14 road games they played in Florida this spring. Sheriff William Synder — dealing with the interaction between mental-health issues and the criminal justice system, along with the common offshoot of mental-health issues, drug addiction. Snyder said there is no visible end to drugs, only reduction for now. “I hope someday that the people who replace me won’t have to deal with this,” Snyder said. To deal with this herculean issue, Snyder said he’s used a three-pronged approach that he’ll continue if reelected — coordination, deterrence and education. Snyder said he’s formed relationships with federal agencies and incorporated them into the Sheriff’s Office to enhance local anti-drug efforts. “I have (the Drug Enforcement Administration) here,” he said. “I have Homeland Security here.” Additionally, Gov. Rick Scott appointed Martin’s top cop to the Florida Violent Crime and Drug Council earlier this month, along with four others. On the deterrence side Snyder said vigorous enforcement of drug law in the public eye is his tool of choice. “We also have our Crime Suppression Team that targets street-level drugs,” he said. Along with that, “If you take a look on our Facebook page, we highlight our drug arrests.” Snyder said mental-health issues are an issue for which there’s much hope. “The biggest thing on my horizon now to tackle, I have a vision to change the paradigm on mental health and its interaction in the criminal justice system,” he said.

Sheriff William Synder Snyder said any cop knows that he or she is dealing with people needing psychiatric care and counseling more than handcuffs. “My deputies have no place to take them but to jail,” said. Unless they can employ the Baker Act. That’s shorthand for the Florida Mental Health Act of 1971 which permits law-enforcement officers to transport subjects they feel could be a threat to themselves or others to designated mental-health facilities for evaluation and possible reference to civil court for involuntary treatment. “It’s a social justice issue,” Snyder said. So, the Sheriff is working with private providers and government agencies to set up a program for detecting mental-health issues early in the criminal-justice process, with an eye toward treatment. “There’re a dozen local providers who are stakeholders and partners with us doing this,” Snyder said. He added, “We’re going to build it while we fly. We’re not going to ring our hands anymore. I’m going to do something (about mental-health) and that is that.” Snyder has a reelection Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/ WillDSnyder.

We got to delve into Oahu during our bus tours, exploring the North Shore, Nu Nuanu Pali, and of course, the gorgeous resort in which we stayed, the Hilton Hawaiian Village on Waikiki Beach. Among those explorations, we ate at many delicious restaurants, shopped in many stores, met many of the locals, and at certain points, were able to relax and take in the scenery. We endeavored two hikes, Monoa Falls, and Diamond Head. Finally reaching the top of each hike was so gratifying, encompassing the breath-taking spectacle that Hawaii had to offer. We also went to the Dole Plantation, where Hawaii’s novelty that seemed to be served with every meal, pineapples, are grown. On

vive the process, Donaldson said engineering staff are figuring it’ll be an about $2.3 million project, much of which could be funded by the county’s new utility franchise fee with Florida Power & Light. Most of the expense — about $2 million — is related to storm-water management work the engineering department added to the proposed work since the commission gave its first nod to the resurfacing and bike lanes in July. However, the franchise fee isn’t the only possible pot of money that could help pay for the Mapp Road work. Mapp Road forms the backbone of the Old Palm City

the last night, OPUS attended a luau w,here we received leis, hula danced, and took advantage of our last chance (for now) to enjoy the Hawaiian culture. Getting on the plane the next day was galling for all of us, as it is our seniors’ last trip, and the end of something that we had looked forward to. I, along with many others, completely fell in love with Hawaii, and could have spent another month on the island. We all felt genuinely blessed to have gone on this trip by having the support of our families and those that have contributed to OPUS. Each one of us got to sense the staggering beauty of Hawaii, our eyes saw incomparable sights, and our minds retained unforgettable memories. Victoria Bartolotta is a Palm City resident who attends a Martin County High School, and will also be performing in StarStruck Production’s “Pippin” beginning April 28. Community Redevelopment Area. The county’s Community Redevelopment Agency has about $1.6 million in trust for the redevelopment area. Donaldson said engineering staff have a number of previous CRA studies and Mapp Road designs to use to craft the upcoming project. He said the storm-water management plan the engineering staff is considering would include construction of a treatment area behind the fire station at 3290 S.W. Mapp Road. The storm-water treatment area would — under current thinking — be made aesthetically pleasing to create a passive use park to encourage pedestrianism on Mapp.

TREASURE COAST — Operation Cat Snip today announced it has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support its activities to assist St. Lucie and Indian River County residents neuter and vaccinate cats they are taking care of on their property. Operation CatSnip, a program of Elinore’s Dream, is a nonprofit organization that has conducted cat neuter, rescue and adoption activities since 2013, saving the lives of over 1,800 cats and minimizing the birth of thousands of unwanted kittens. The Petco Foundation investment will help Operation CatSnip expand spay and neuter opportunities on the Treasure Coast, particularly for low income residents. “This support from Petco will help Operation CatSnip save the lives of many more cats and kittens and open up more affordable spay and neuter options,” said Sharon Cooper, Operation CatSnip Director. The grant was made possible through the Petco Foundation’s annual Helping Heroes fundraising campaign, in partnership with Natural Balance Pet Foods. During the campaign each October, customers are invited to donate in Petco stores across the Country to support service and therapy animals and organizations. For more information about Operation CatSnip and spay/neuter/rescue activities for cats visit www.adoptapet.com/ElinoresDream or www.Facebook.com/ operationcatsnipslc. Or call (772) 216-4070.

Martin Commission approves plan to raise utility rates slowly Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER
pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com
MARTIN COUNTY — To avoid large rate increases in the future, the County Commission approved a plan to index rates to those recommended annually by the Florida Public Service Commission. It’s a return to a previous arrangement. The commission gave a unanimous nod to the utility-rate indexing at its last regular meeting. “We started indexing in October of 2009,” John Polley, utilities and solid waste director, said in a phone interview. Water and sewer rates climbed moderately from 2009 to 2014. “We didn’t index last year,” Polley said. “In the years we did do (indexing), it was 1.572 percent.” The indexing automatically terminated after 2014. The new indexed rates will be on June bills. Polley said the average bill for water will increase from about $29.35 to $29.79. The in-
dexing will sunset again in 2025, about the time Martin will retire debt service on previous infrastructure work. The annual debt service is about $7.8 million. The indexed rate is capped at 2.5 percent. The County Commission could approve rate increases larger than that if needed. At the meeting, Commissioner Sarah Heard said many county utilities customers have trauma from a large rate increase in 2001. That year the commission, after several years of no increases, had to raise rates 11 percent. “Customers are really unfavorable to those leaps, and so am I,” she said. At the meeting, Haddox predicted that the vast majority of the county’s utility customers would like indexed rates staving off large increases. “I think it’s well received by customers, too,” he said. The county has about 33,500 water and 25,200 sewer customers. Many Palm City customers have water, but not sewer.

TREASURE COAST — Taking their cues from the warm spring weather, Florida manatees have begun leaving their winter retreats and heading north along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts and through inland waters. So if you’re a boater enjoying spring days on the water, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) cautions you to look out for manatees and follow posted manatee zones. From April 1 through Nov. 15, seasonal manatee zones require boaters to slow down in certain areas to prevent manatees from being struck by motorboats or personal watercraft. FWC law enforcement officers will be on patrol in state waters to remind boaters of the seasonal manatee speed zones and will take enforcement actions when necessary. Manatee zones and maps are available at MyFWC. com/Manatee, where you can select “Protection Zones” for links to county maps. “Our officers do their very best to support conservation of this species,” said FWC Capt. Gary Klein. “We ask that boaters take notice of the zones and do their part as well by increasing their awareness of the possible presence of manatees.” Because manatees are large,
slow-moving and difficult to detect when underwater, operators of boats and personal watercraft need to take basic steps to avoid causing injury to manatees: Wear polarized sunglasses to help spot manatees. Look for the large circles on the water, also known as manatee footprints, indicating the presence of a manatee below. Look for a snout sticking up out of the water. Follow posted manatee zones while boating. You can watch manatees without disturbing them if you follow “Guidelines for protecting native wildlife — Florida Manatees,” a brochure that includes tips for canoers, kayakers, paddle boarders, snorkelers and scuba divers. It’s available at MyFWC.com/ Manatees, click on “Boat, Personal Watercraft and Paddle-sport Operators” and then on “Paddle-sport Operators.” Support the FWC’s manatee research, rescue and management efforts by purchasing a “Save the Manatee” Florida license plate at BuyaPlate.com, or by donating $5 to receive an FWC manatee decal by going to MyFWC.com/Manatee and clicking on “Decals.” The FWC also asks anyone seeing an injured, distressed, sick or dead manatee to call the agency’s Wildlife Alert Hotline, (888) 404-3922 (FWCC) or dial #FWC or *FWC on a cell phone.

Cameos
Emperors have commissioned them, kings have acquired them, and at least since the fourth century B.C., collectors have cherished them. Cameos are works of miniature sculptured art. Their original purpose is lost in history, with the original intent of individual pieces known only to the craftsmen who carved them. What is known is that of the countless ancient examples of the sculptor’s and carver’s craft, none offers such a unique window through which to view the cultural past. Cameos reveal the manners, customs, philosophies, historic events and social occasions that have marked our past. The ancient cameos, like fine art and sculpture, were intended as statements. Only in the last few hundred years has the significance eroded as cameos began to depict endless profiles— of vapid females. Today most cameo connoisseurs believe that cameos originated without any practical purpose other than ornamentation. This was true of the late Victorian age when many were mass produced for tourist on Holiday in Italy- However the dutch scholar, Zadoks-Josehus Jitta, was correct seeing their deeper meaning has characterized them as “messages in agate.” In ancient times the cameo also served as an amulet, a talisman, a storyboard depicting ethics and morals, a tangible affirmation of one’s faith and in some cases a reflection of one’s destiny. At one point the wearing of a cameo portrait of the ruling monarch not only showed one’s loyalty to the court but also facilitated a quick audience with the ruler; such a cameo could quite conceivably guarantee safety and favor. Given all this, it seems inappropriate to consign the carving of cameos only to the category of personal adornments and amusements plastered on cups, vessels, crowns and relics, used to fill treasuries of royalty and the church. Throughout history royal figures have set the tone for fashion. Queen Elizabeth I enjoyed wearing cameos and Catherine the Great maintained an impressive collection of them. The enthusiasm for cameos were also evident in the French court of Napoleon .
Olympians on parade rare circa 1885 14kt. Yellow gold excellent carving very large. The first ancient reference of religious ceremonies for them is found in the Homeric Hymn to Hermes. The Greek cult of the Twelve Olympians can be traced to the 6th century BC Athens and probably had no precedent in the Mycenaean period. The altar to the Twelve Olympians at Athens is usually dated to the archonship of the younger Pesistratos, in 522/521 BC. The concept of the “Twelve Gods” is older than any of our Greek or Roman sources, and is likely of Anatolian origin. There seems to have been a great deal of fluidity when it came to who was counted among their number in antiquity Very large rare one of a kind circa 1880 • 22kt/14kt cameo hand made with 22kt Aphroditie, her mother Dion & torch bearing cherb with the bird of wisdom Museum quality. Rarity, not necessarily age, determine a cameo’s value Among the most valued cameos, however, are “metamorphic” ones. These include several subjects, such as a man and an eagle, within one carving. “This is where the carver was like a sculptor, looking into the stone and seeing the potential within,” This is one of those rare cameos

C-PAC from page 6 primary. Those reelections kept together what’s called the “New Commission Majority,” created by the 2012 elections. Haddox was generally counted among the New Commission Majority, which included fellow freshman Scott. Scott and Haddox were generally seen as a 2012 voter revolution favoring a return to a more stringent Martin County Comprehensive Growth Management Plan, generally called the comp plan. The pair joined the commission’s so-called slow-growth bloc, Heard and Fielding. However, while Haddox has been eager to strengthen the comp plan, he’s been unpredictable on other issues. He’s backed efforts to get the proposed customs facility at the airport, and become a staunch advocate for the Community Redevelopment Agency and its Neighborhood Advisory committees, which he voted to scrap then pushed to restore. To illustrate the strain, Heard and Fielding opposed his election as the commission’s vice chairman last November. However, the two voted to make Scott the chairwoman, although she’s been a slow-growth maverick, too. Only not to the extent Haddox has been. Martin’s political factions are basically two camps that can largely be divided by that one document: the comp plan. No one advocates scrapping it, but camps have evolved over how it’s to be interpreted and applied. The purists look to the comp plan not just for the letter, but what they see as the intent of the document — preserving Martin’s rural character against anything perceived as a threat to it. They’re often painted as being anti-business. Then there’s the rationalists who see the comp plan as setting safeguards against overdevelopment and prefer giving the county and business breathing room under it. They’re often painted as plotting to overthrow the comp plan.
Commissioner Doug Smith There are no issues that highlight the divide better than the Community Redevelopment Agency and proposed U.S. Customs and Boarder Enforcement facility. If Haddox were to lose to Ciampi, chances are that district’s votes would go unchanged. Both favor the CRA and customs. Melzer, however, is a critic of the CRA and staunch opponent of customs. If Melzer comes out on top in that race, the commission dynamics could be changed. In District 1, Copeland is the most likely game-changer. He, too, has been a critic of the CRA and a customs opponent. In District 3, things get ambiguous. Scott has voted for and against customs. She’s voted against Community Redevelopment Agency projects — including the proposed Mapp Road project in Old Palm City — but signaled at a recent meeting she believes it may be prudent to restore the Community Redevelopment Agency’s board, something the commission disbanded in 2012. The commission has served as the CRA board ever since. On issues identified as most important to voters—the proposed All Aboard Florida and environmental concerns — which in Martin is code for opposition to continued Lake Okeechobee discharges — the nine candidates will find few ways to get sunlight between them. No commission candidate will fail to oppose either.

“Music is a team activity. It teaches them to be better-rounded people by introducing them to the complete spectrum of human experience through music, she says. The evening began with a few opening remarks, during which Superintendent Laurie Gaylord led the packed Martin County High School gymnasium in a moment of silence for Barbara Anderson, a music teacher and administrator who recently passed away, without whom Music in Our Schools would never have gotten off the ground. The Friends Chorus, a unique choir of learning disabled students directed by Conney Dahn and Karen Hester, set the tone for the evening, and reminded the audience what they were there to celebrate: the universal pas-
John Willis sion for music that we all share across boundaries. The county-wide Friends Chorus, which has participated in the event since 1989, is a clear indication of the positive climate for disabled students in the district, and their performance at MIOS is an audience favorite every year, says Dahn, a Palm City resident. “It’s awesome to see all those people stand up and cheer for our kids. I’ve been doing this so long that I remember the days when people wouldn’t even talk to my kids, or have anything to do with them. Now, I see so many doors opening for them. I think MIOS has a lot to do with that.” The 300-something elementary students who were up next were noticeably inspired. These adorable choristers spread the delight even further with their choreographed version of “Listen to the Rain,” a ruminative jazz number complete with a percussive interlude, where students simulated

MARTIN COUNTY — JoLynn Hansen, director, said people looking for assistance to reaching and maintaining healthy, desired weights and lifestyles will be pleased at New Beginnings Medical. Those looking for magical quick fixes to weight issues won’t be. “It is not a magic bullet, I will tell you that right up front,” Hansen said. New Beginnings uses a medically-supervised program with human chorionic gonadotropin, or HCG, along with dietary counseling. Hansen said HCG, a hormone produced during pregnancy, causes the body to release “abnormal fat,” or the surplus that’s not necessary for normal functioning. The body needs fat for various jobs. Too much can have serious health consequences. Hansen said New Beginnings wants no one thinking weight loss is as simple as getting a shot of HCG and buying a new
wardrobe. Like any healthy approach to shedding weight, there’s behavior modification. In other words, eating fewer calories a day, typically 500 in the New Beginnings’ program. Yes, that’s far fewer calories than anyone’s basal metabolic rate, which is the number of calories the body uses to do its basic functions. “(HCG) pulls the abnormal fat into the bloodstream to make up the difference,” Hansen said. The body usually resists having a lower calorie intake than it burns between basic functions and activities. People feel that resistance as hunger, the ultimate challenge to anyone aiming to lose weight. The benefit of HCG, Hansen said, is taming hunger. “If you have abnormal fat, you won’t be hungry on this diet,” she said. There is a “however.” However, people eat for more reasons than ending hunger. People eat out of habit, as a means of comfort, because of food addictions, and simply out of boredom or fatigue. People also eat un-

The Jackson Five’s “I Want You Back,” where horns ingeniously stood in for Michael’s famed vocals. Haley says that while her students at Hidden Oaks study a wide-reaching “musical literature” in class that includes jazz standards, blues, and various non-classical forms, she and her fellow directors try to select recognizable music for MIOS. The middle school bands also performed a stunning rendition of John Williams’ “Jurassic Park” theme, and the “Pirates of the Caribbean” theme, as examples of music’s interwoven role in our everyday lives. Music as cultural heritage was another motif for the evening, with the middle school choirs performing the four-piece gospel traditional “Witness,” which is actually very complex and difficult for young choristers, Willis, who conducted confesses. He says his program at Hidden Oaks is one of the few in Florida that focuses on the individual abilities of its students, as opposed to simply relegating them to their grade level. “A lot of middle school directors would say that middle-schoolers can’t do the things high-schoolers can do,” says Willis. “Either they’re just not ready, or it’s too hard to teach them. I can’t stand it, because I have to come into school to make beautiful music. If somebody is in beginning chorus, and they’re a 6th-grader and doing really well, I don’t want them to sit back and stagnate and not be able to innovate to the best of their abilities.” The middle-school chorus also exhibited an emotional wisdom beyond their years with their version of the Irish folk song “Danny Boy” — paired perfectly with the strident “Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye,” performed by the high school choirs. The performance of the middle schools was impressive on its own. Even more impressive: while preparing for the event, all of the middle-school choral and
“We must teach music: ‘So you will be human. So you will recognize and appreciate beauty. So you will have more love, compassion, more gentleness, more good — In short, more life.’” MIOS Playbill band students were also getting ready for the Music Performance Assessment (MPA) evaluations that would be held that weekend by the Florida Bandmasters’ Association. These are state-wide evaluations where students’ skills and repertoire are tested, and for the last two years, Hidden Oaks has taken home superiors from the meets. Another thing that sets Martin County’s music program apart is the camaraderie among the different schools, says Joe Flanagan, who has coordinated MIOS for 28 years. “Everybody gets along, and we all work well together toward the common goal,” he says. With larger districts, individual schools will often compete for recognition against each other, or have difficulty recruiting middle-school musicians for high school programs. “We don’t have that problem here,” says Flanagan. As MIOS came to its grandiose culmination, the hundreds of student performers in the event joined together in a roof-raising performance of “God Bless America,” that sent surges of triumph and pride throughout the gymnasium, and connected every living human being in the room. In the MIOS playbill, a prospectus was included, outlining the importance of music in our lives. These are only some of the reasons why the paper states we must teach music: ‘So you will be human. So you will recognize and appreciate beauty. So you will have more love, compassion, more gentleness, more good — In short, more life.’”

And the award goes to — NAPA FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
TREASURE COAST — This year’s prestigious 2015 NAPA 5 Star Excellence Award has been awarded to Owner and General Manager Wayne Sloat of NAPA Auto Parts. The award, which honors franchise owners based upon total combined store performances, is judged on multiple factors including outstanding performance in customer service, excellence in auto care, employee management and training, store appearance, and sales. Sloat’s award reflects overall performance for three NAPA Auto Parts store locations in Stuart, Port St. Lucie and Okeechobee. NAPA, which stands for National Auto Parts Association, first started in 1925, when — to paraphrase the corporate website — a group of auto part sellers decided to make accessibility and affordability a corporate mission, serving automobile and truck owners dependent on transportation. The company is made up of both corporate-owned and individually owned stores. To date, there are 6,000 franchises nationwide. Originally from Canada, the Sloat
family started to visit Florida in the mid-1970s during the winter seasons. When asked how interest into the auto industry first started Sloat says, “There was a Ford dealership in Canada where my father lived, and my mother was American.” The family eventually relocated to Florida. They discovered that an opportunity to become a part of the NAPA Auto Parts franchise when another franchise owner placed his on the market. In 1988, Sloat, along with his father, Arnold Sloat, and younger brother, Gary Sloat, founded Auto Supply of Stuart Inc., and have grown the company into a thriving mid-size organization serving the Treasure Coast. Talent and skills are part of what has helped make the family business successful. “The first car I worked on and rebuilt was a 1973 Mustang,” Sloat says. Sloat, who grew up changing oil, washing cars, fixing up and selling cars, didn’t rely on talent and skill alone. He earned his bachelor of science degree from Florida State University, and holds a master’s in business Administration from Florida Atlantic University.
He manages the stores, his brother Gary runs and oversees the machine shop, while his father handles sales. Teamwork is also an essential part of what makes winning this award possible. “You have to have the right combination to succeed. NAPA stocks quality parts, and you have to have the right people. We have good help and try to keep our employees motivated,” Sloat says. NAPA carries more than 400,000 automotive and industrial parts and applications to serve DIY-ers, auto professionals and drivers. But sometimes, with different cars on the market, to remain competitive it’s about pleasing the customer. “You have to work at it,” Sloat says. Sometimes customers choose a franchise owned NAPA Auto Parts service center over a corporate owned because of the owners flexibility in pricing and product. Franchise owners, like Sloat, are often found on the premises meeting and greeting customers. “I get to know some of my customers by name. And, if a customer needs a part that NAPA does not carry, he will try to get it for the customer elsewhere,” he says. Competition is strong in the auto

parts and repair industry. But after nearly three decades of working in the business that serves customers, Sloat has managed to remain competitive and reputable. “We do things in a way that shows our customers we appreciate their business,” he says. “Our goal is to provide quality parts in a timely manner at a fair price.” ‘ For more information call Port St. Lucie location at (772) 398-0100, West Port St. Lucie at (772) 8781113, Stuart location at (772) 2875151 and/or Okeechobee location at (863) 763-3121.

a healthy self-esteem. Hansen said New Beginnings is concerned about helping people get healthy bodies and self-images, and will tell folks when the HCG diet simply isn’t right for them, or right for the moment. While helping people reach and learn to keep their desired body fat counts, New Beginnings discovered something. “After clients lost the weight, they developed a whole new image,” she said. New Beginnings introduced cosmetic services, such as Botox treatments, Juvéderm treatments and latisse eyelash enhancement. Hansen said New Beginnings is much more than a business for her husband, Robert, and her. “(Robert) and I have always loved helping people,” she said. The couple worked in addictions recovery, and watched the transformation of people from unhealthy to healthy. Many times she saw that getting to a healthy weight was an important part of the transformations. “It changes who you are when you feel better about yourself,” she said.

healthful diets for convenience or a lack of education. Hansen said for the HCG program to succeed in both the short- and long-term, patients must be willing to learn and change. “I’ve turned patients down, just because I could tell they weren’t going to follow the (eating) protocol,” she said. “It’s not for everyone. It takes strong discipline.” New Beginnings’ program has patients on the 500-calorie diet for no more than 40 days at a time with six-week breaks between them until desired weights are reached. During the six-week breaks, called maintenance or rest periods, patients must eat healthfully, and avoid starches and sugars, for the HCG program to work. Hansen said that during the 40day cycles, patients can lose upward to a pound a day, depending on numerous factors. How long the program lasts depends on the patients’ need and want. “We have patients who need to lose 50 pounds,” Hansen said. “We’ve had some that had to lose 200.” New Beginnings has patients who aren’t morbidly obese, or dangerously overweight. Some are mildly overweight and not facing health issues. They just want to maintain certain body weights for

Putt’ing for pets at golf tournament April 30 PALM CITY — On April 30, Dogs & Cats Forever, Inc., a NO KILL animal shelter, will host a charity golf tournament to raise money for the animals. The tournament will take place at Evergreen Golf Club in Palm City. Dogs & Cats Forever was organized in 1988 for the purpose of building and maintaining a shelter for homeless dogs and cats on the Treasure Coast. The shelter was founded on the principle of trying to find good, adoptable and loving homes for the animals and help stop the killing of over 75,000 abandoned animals in southern Florida. With the increase of Florida’s population has come an increase of un-

This charity is not connected with any other animal society. It is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt project, totally dependent on donations and endowments. Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer The cast of ‘Pippin’ prepares for their five show run beginning April 28 at StarStruck Threatre in Stuart. Both Jennifer and Peter Jones have worked with Schwartz, who has been to Stuart several times to see adaptations of his work. “He’s a master,” Jennifer Jones said. “He uses history, mythology and the Bible or history and contemporizes them and shows us the human condition. Times may change, but our stories remain
the same, and our ability or lack of ability to communicate repeats itself. ‘Pippin’ is about a young man who graduates from school and is trying to find his purpose, ‘his corner of the sky.’ When he graduates, he says to his father, the King that he needs to find his unique quality, something extraordinary.”

MARTIN COUNTY — The musical “Pippin” holds a special place in Jennifer Jones’ heart. She will direct students of StarStruck Academy in a production of the show April 28-May 1, but her love for it goes back a long way. “It was the first Broadway show I ever saw,” she said. “It became my favorite musical for decades. My parents bought me the album and it opened with pictures and lyrics. That album was the greatest gift.” Fast forward several decades. Jones is living in Stuart and she gets a call from someone who’s heard her sing, asking her to audition for a show. “It was ‘Pippin,’” she said. “I went and guess who the musical director was.” It was Peter Jones, whom she married and with whom she opened StarStruck. “Pippin was written by Stephen Schwartz, the acclaimed composer of shows like “Godspell” and “Wicked.” He has a talent for taking established stories, legends and bits of history and turning them on their heads. Pippin and his father, Charlemagne are historical figures, but the show is not a telling of their history. Rather, it is about a prince who is searching for his identity.

Comedian returns to Lyric Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
STUART – Paula Poundstone is a Lyric favorite. The comedian, storyteller, radio game show panelist and booster of libraries returns to the theater April 16 for two shows. Poundstone began her career at open mic nights in Boston. She traveled across the country by Greyhound bus, ending up in San Francisco, where she was seen by Robin Williams, who encouraged her to come to Los Angeles. Her career took off and she was the first woman to perform at the White House Correspondents Dinner. She has won two Cable ACE awards and was named to Comedy Central’s 2004 list of the 100 greatest stand-ups of all time. In 2010, she was voted into the Comedy Hall of Fame. When we spoke three years ago, Poundstone noted that hosting an open mic night was great training. In fact, she called it the “Thigh-Master of stand-up.” “At the time, I only had a few minutes of material,” she said. “I was hosting a show that began
at 7 and ran until 1. While the audience might rotate, it was long. I could have gotten away introducing the acts, but the idea of hosting was that some people were pretty bad and you had to get the crowd back. “It was on-stage training, the only way to do stand-up. Classes are snake oil. You have to have a real audience. An open mic is the only way to start. You’re working with an audience for five minutes. More would be torture for the audience and the comic. What job do you get to practice a few minutes at a time? You get a lot of rejection. I was fairly well-versed.” Poundstone said that she learned early on that she had to be herself. When she entered competitions and lost, she knew she had to entertain as Paula Poundstone. “I still have to be myself,” she said. “Over the years, it’s the only thing I’ve considerably worked at, becoming more and more myself. I react as myself and trust my own instincts. Otherwise, I’m serving too many masters. I’m not everyone’s cup of tea, but

In addition to insane Fosse-like choreography from Nicky Wood, Cayla McDonald is the circus arts teacher, We’ll have static trapeze, silks and the lyra. It’s incredible.” The cast includes Victoria Bartolotta as the Leading Player; Jack Maloney as Pippin; Madison Bailey as Catherine; Charlotte Krieger as Fastrada; Lucia Izzolo as Berthe; River Hassett as Lewis; Madeline Schoppe as Thea; Aaron Simons as Charles; Audrey Millet as the Courtier; Emily Smith as
POUNDSTONE from page 33 the crowds that come to see me, they’ve already predetermined (they want to see me) or there’s a connection. Then we have a great time.” She mentioned a recent show in Atlanta where she asked a woman what sort of work she did. The woman said she was a hospice nurse. Rough terrain for comedy, you might think, especially as the woman added that she wanted to work with babies that were dying. “The crowd and the woman had a hoot,” Poundstone said. “It was dark and we enjoyed the heck out of it because the audience enjoyed seeing me in that position. For those people who have bought into being entertained by Paula Poundstone, I already feel confidence.” Poundstone said that her shows are autobiographical and are full of stories about a house full of animals and kids. She said that no topic is out-of-bounds, but some things just don’t come up. “I don’t sit around, trying to come up with jokes on controversial tropics,” she said. “I think there’s something funny in everything, A sense of humor was provided (to us) as a coping mechanism.” One topic she doesn’t talk about frequently is sex, but that’s because the show is autobiographical and she doesn’t talk about things she doesn’t do. When I had the opportunity to interview Poundstone three years ago, the comedian talked about her spot as a panelist on the popular NPR radio quiz show, “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me.” The program has a segment in which

There’s a lot of comedy and humor and the circus aspect. Everyone is going to love it. If you’re new to StarStruck, come and see the show so you can see the level you’ll children will be working, the high quality of what we do with kids. a famous person is asked questions outside their field. At that time, she said that the show got great guests and the panelists could never figure out why they were willing to appear. Some of her favorites were Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer and primatologist Jane Goodall. I asked her who had impressed her lately. “We were in Atlanta a couple of months ago,” she said. “It’s always fun to find out who the guest is. Most are via telephone, and often, it’s somebody I’m excited about. They said Tricia Yearwood and I wouldn’t know her if I tripped over her. I didn’t know the degree to which she was a star and she was coming to be on stage. “I expected flashy and out walks this woman who seemed so comfortable and confident. She was not arrogant or coy and she was so funny. She was totally into being on the show. We had such a good time with her. We also had the Surgeon-General. He’s very young and incredibly handsome. Everyone we’ve had in the cabinet or government has a passion for what they’re doing.” Poundstone is passionate about public libraries and believes they are more important than ever. “The truth is, I worried about my buddies, the libraries, but reading on a screen is not as satisfying as holding a book. Libraries are places of community. They’re just as important as they ever were.” Paula Poundstone comes to the Lyric Theatre, 59 S.W. Flagler Ave., Stuart April 16 at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $40. My velvety soft fur is a mixture of brown, black and beige on the outside and 9 lbs. of love and tenderness on the inside. Lounging in the sunlight, affection and chin scratches I so enjoy. Not only am I adorable but also unique, see if I select you for my very own.
Although I am not fond of loud noises and thunder, I am a 7 year-old chap who wishes to be your one and only. I adore playtime, treats & of course, my toys! You will be impressed with my talents of “sit”, “stay”, “lay down”, “drop it” and “off”. I can’t wait to shower all of my 57 pounds of love on my new devoted and forever family.
