PALM CITY — Enough cable to stretch from Palm City to Hallandale Beach. That’s how much is getting put into the Veterans Memorial Bridge. The bridge gives Palm City a second over-the-river connection to Stuart. Most are still calling it the Indian Street Bridge. “This month, we’ve completed three more decks,” George Denti, project manager, said. “We’ve set three more spans of beams. We’ve also completed phase one of post tensioning and grouting.” Bridges are built in parts. The cables joining them are stretched to 500,000 pounds per square inch. “It makes (the bridge) act as one big happy unit,” Denti said. The cables are weaved through beams with ducts. If stretched straight, the cables would be the length of three and a half marathons — 92 miles. That’s 179 tons of steel that’ll hold up an

Physician specializes in primary, urgent care By Shelley Koppel Staff writer

STUART — Dr. Michele Libman of Treasure Coast Urgent and Primary Care is one of only a few physicians in south Florida who are board-certified in two specialties, internal medicine and emergency medicine. “When I was in med school, you really only got three weeks in each specialty,” she said. “When I graduated, I was not 100 percent sure (of my specialty.) I figured I’d do internal medicine. You could work in the emergency room with internal medicine. While I was doing my residency, I picked a program where they spent time in the ER. I liked that aspect, figuring out what was wrong.” Libman said that the two areas present different challenges. “When you’re a medical resident, you’re given a patient where you know what’s wrong,” she said. “In the ER, you’re starting from scratch and finding pieces of the puzzle. It’s more challenging. Now, to work in the ER you have to be ER-trained.” The doctor received her medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. She
completed her internal medicine residency at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia and her emergency residency at Jacobi Hospital and Montefiore Medical Center in New York. Dr. Libman moved to Martin County in 2000 and has practiced as an emergency room physician at Martin Health System and Lawnwood Regional Medical Center. She lives in Palm City with her husband, son, and three dogs, Jack, Casey and Stitch. At Treasure Coast Urgent and Primary Care, she is able to treat patients and families. “In internal medicine, you see people who haven’t seen a doctor in years and have symptoms,” she said. “You have patients you have had for awhile where you are managing conditions and educating them. It’s nice. You develop a relationship with them and their families. In the ER you don’t have that rapport.” The practice began with the urgent care, but as it grew, people who came in for emergencies asked Dr. Libman to be their regular doctor. “The ER treats the most serious patients,” Libman said. “We care for sprains, lacerations, nebulizers for mild asthma and upper respiratory problems. We

If patients think they are having a heart attack or stroke, they should go to the ER.” Libman said that her patients like having a continuum of care. “We can continue to see most of our urgent care patients,” she said. “Their records are here. It’s nice for the primary care patients. If they get acutely sick, they can go to the urgent care.
The office is located on Monterey Road in Stuart, in a building with other physician offices. “What’s nice about this building is that there are sub-specialists here. We can usually get them a same-day appointment. We have good relationships with them.” In addition to primary and urgent care, the practice handles

PALM CITY — Commissioner John Haddox, Palm City, summed it up with one sentence. “Unfortunately, equestrian trails are probably the most contentious issue in my district.” At its last regular meeting, the Martin County Commission unanimously approved plans for the proposed 26-acre Citrus Grove Community Park beside Citrus Grove Elementary, 2527 S.W. Citrus Blvd., Palm City. However, the commission nixed plans for a horse trail going through part of the park. The move displeased Ron Shewmaker, founder and director of the Palm City Farm Trails Association. He said the proposed park will cut an existing 35-mile equestrian trail in half. “There was connectivity there before, but there won’t be after you put this park in,” he told the commission. “In the past we did agree
to give up something for another use, and now you’re taking it away.” In an interview after the meeting, Shewmaker referred Your Voice News & Views to the association’s website for additional information. “I believe that trail exists and it’s platted land,” he said in the interview. Shewmaker later said, “This is fodder for lawyers, and I’m not a lawyer.” In a separate interview after the meeting, Haddox said that his head is swimming in legal questions about whether the county would have been legitimizing the entire trail — which traverses some private properties — by adding the proposed link. That, he said, was why he opted to remove it for now. “In (Palm City Farms), there on the plat there are public-private right of ways,” Haddox said. “Somewhere around 10, 12 years ago, the Palm City Farm Trails Association asked neighbors to open up some of their properties, so

Weekend ‘thing’ blossoms into full-fledged floral business By Patrick McCallister Staff writer pmccallister@yourvoiceweekly.com PALM CITY — Christina Pardo’s DNA probably looks like orchids and bromeliads. “My mother always had orchids and bromeliads around the house,” she said. “My mother always had gorgeous gardens; people always had something to say about them.” Pardo owns Blooming Freedom at 3993 S.W. Leighton Farm Ave. in Palm City. The nursery specializes in orchids and bromeliads. She started the business in her garage back in 1995. Pardo hit the flea market on weekends, and started selling to a growing list of area florists the following Mondays. Pardo was startled at how quickly her business grew. By ’98, Blooming Freedom moved to its 5-acre property. That’s a lot more than Pardo was expecting when she started the business. “It was just a weekend thing,” she said. But, Pardo’s business plan followed actor Barry Williams’ famous quote: “The only advice I can offer is to find what you love to do, find the joy in it, and
express yourself through your passion.” Pardo not only loves flowers, but giving folks tips about growing the perfect orchids and bromeliads. “A lot of people kill these plants with overwatering,” she said. “We water orchids only once a week, once every 10 days.” There are plenty of tips for successful orchid growing at bloomingfreedom.com. For example, beginning orchid growers should stick to established plants — all the better if those plants are in bud with at least one open flower. Orchids have different lighting needs, ranging from the phalaenopsis on the lower to the vanda on the higher ends of light preferences. Direct sunlight is not the orchid’s favorite. All the different orchids prefer diffused light. Orchids also like the air humidity around 40 to 70 percent. There are a few easy ways to ensure this with home plants. Another tip about orchids — they don’t like stagnant air. Like people, the flowers enjoy ceiling fans. Defending the bill, Rubio said it enforces entry and exit tracking, includes $5.5 billion in border security funding and puts illegal immigrants through a years-long rigorous process to obtain citizenship. “They’ll have to come forward. They’ll have to undergo a criminal background check, a national security background check,” Rubio said. “They have to pay a $2,000 fine and an application fee. They don’t qualify for any federal benefits. They only get the permit for six years. ST. LUCIE WEST — For the first time in five years, financial loan officers are seeing substantial signs of hope. St. Lucie West SunTrust Bank assistant vice president and mortgage loan consultant Monica Brown says, the area’s economic future looks bright, a stark contrast from the crippling years since 2008 when unemployment numbers skyrocketed and foreclosed homes were a common sight. “We are seeing a huge comeback … I’m getting appraisals in now, where I’m shocked. It’s a good shock.” Borrower and bank morale has also risen, Brown said. “The atmosphere has definitely changed. It’s not going to come roaring back like how we were in 2005, 2006 when loan officers could literally just sit at their desks and have people waiting in the lobby,” said Brown, who cited a recent trend report that predicts a 44 percent increase in home buying in 2014. “All they did was write loan after loan after loan. It was just like that because of the big boom.” The Tradition resident said shortly after she joined the branch, St. Lucie West’s oldest bank established in 1995, the market began to take a nosedive. “Everything kind of went back to old-fashioned loan writing. Lots and lots of documentation, no shortcut-type underwriting or anything like that,” Brown said of an ominous 2007. “The values totally plummeted,” she said. MARTIN COUNTY — As the needle on the thermometer rises, many high school football programs across the Treasure Coast recently began their preparations for their respective spring games held at the end of the month. While the focus for the coaching staffs is on player development and seeing who is deserving of playing time, Martin County football head coach Chuck Kenyon sees the opening of spring practice as an opportunity to add another generation to his Tiger football family. Entering his eighth season as Tigers head coach, Kenyon is coming off a season where he led Martin County to its third straight postseason appearance, a feat that’s a first in school history. Despite finishing the 2012 season with a losing record (5-6), the Tigers rallied to capture a dramatic 34-31 opening round playoff victory at Charlotte High School. It was the second straight year the Tigers traveled to Charlotte and brought home a playoff win.
With the spring game approaching, Kenyon is looking to continue the program’s momentum. After the offseason workouts, what has impressed Kenyon is the amount of kids looking to continue it with him. “In workouts, I’ve consistently had 70-75 kids come out and that’s not including incoming freshmen,” Kenyon said. “That’s all current freshmen, sophomores and juniors. I think that’s a great number to have. “We have a lot of guys that are coming back that have bought into what we are trying to do and we’re looking out of the windshield.” While looking toward the future, Kenyon is calling on the past help build his ball club. “I’m bringing in a couple guys who played for me in the past to help us coach and develop these kids,” Kenyon said. “I think that’s a testament to what they feel about how we do things Martin County High School.” One of the players returning to assist with this current crop of players is former Tigers running back Lyle Dankenbring. Dankenbring graduated from Martin County in 2008 and went to
star at the University of Central Florida. While at UCF, Dankenbring was named an Academic All-American in 2012. Dankenbring’s return symbolizes a deeper message that Kenyon attempts to instill into his program. Putting on the blue and gold is more than just playing football for you. It’s about building a bond with the brothers you go to battle and for the school and community you represent, lasting long after the playing days are over. “If they don’t want to come back and show that loyalty to the program, then I feel like I’m doing something wrong,” Kenyon said. “If they actually come back wanting to see you or wanting to help out by coaching, then I’m doing something right. “So to have some of my old players come back, it brings a level of continuity and togetherness that I’m trying to instill in this current group. It’s about building a loyal family that extending beyond the time they walk through this locker room.” Martin County will travel to compete against at Rockledge High School on May 24.

Sure, he’s got some pairs of the obligatory shiny shoes lawyers have to wear sometimes, but the 45-year-old would just as soon don some snake boots. “I’ve caught many alligators, snakes, coons and armadillos,” he said. Durham started the job at the last regular meeting of the Martin Commission, Tuesday, April 23. He grew up in parts south of Martin. “Plantation, when I was born, was the boondocks,” he said. LUCIE — Everglades Area Health Education Center and Workforce Solutions have launched a public awareness campaign to promote Everglades AHEC’s tobacco cessation services to new audiences throughout its four-county region-Quit Burning Cash, Quit Smoking Today. Workforce Solutions will provide information on their website and in their centers for the Quit Burning Cash, Quit Smoking Today campaign to educate participants about the Everglades AHEC’s cessation programs; Quit Smoking Now uses a six-week format and Tools to Quit uses a two-hour format. Everglades Area Health Education Center seeks the enrollment of tobacco users wanting to quit and will provide all the necessary tools, resources and skills they will need to be set up for success. “Quitting smoking can make a significant financial impact on a struggling family affected by unemployment,” Workforce Solu-
tions President/CEO Richard Stetson said. “This partnership allows our staff to refer interested clients to the Everglades AHEC program.” For those trying to quit alone, the success rate is quite low, around 7 percent. These cessation programs have a significantly higher success rate of approximately 33 percent. Workforce Solutions will refer interested job seekers and local businesses to the program. PARK from page 4 people could have trails throughout the area. “Over the course of years, the Trails Association has been at times very politely knocking on doors and showing their neighbors maps and saying, ‘You’ve got a public-private right of way on your property and you’ve got it fenced.’ Over the years, they became at times more forceful writing letters saying, ‘You need to take the fences down.’” The association’s web site, palmcityfarmstrails.com, states that the original developer, the Palm Beach County Land Company, platted portions of the land for public roadways, and despite the county’s failure to claim them they remain open to pubic use. Haddox said the situation has long been untenable. “For me, it’s a very sad situation to have any community pitting neighbor against neighbor,” he said. “The situation needs to get resolved.” Additionally, Haddox said he’s awaiting answers from

BRIDGE from page 1 been overcapacity for about a decade, preventing some new construction. Martin County Commissioner John Haddox, Palm City, said he has some concerns that the bridge will generate too many trips on Mapp Road between S.W. Martin Downs Blvd. and S.W. Martin Highway. The area is part of Palm City’s Community Redevelopment Area. He hopes to get additional traffic studies done before the bridge opens. Denti figures that’ll be in November. The Martin County Board of County Commissioners in 2011 voted to name the 3,100-foot structure Veterans Memorial Bridge. The Federal Highway Administration is funding the $65 million construction through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The project was originally estimated to cost more than $120 million. However, due to the construction bust in 2008, the cost of building materials dropped significantly, and contractors generally lowered their bids. The project was slated to be finished by summer, but there have been some delays. Construction started in April, 2011. The bridge spans a portion of the St. Lucie River that is part of the Okeechobee Waterway, a 1937 Army Corps of Engineers project that connected natural waterways to create a 152mile shortcut across Florida. Those cables weaving through the bridge are made of high-carbon steel designed for super strength and low relaxation.
“Those qualities are produced by a rigorous manufacturing process,” Denti said. “It’s a very specialized industry.” Relaxation is a metallurgical term describing how metal will stretch over time under pressure. An experiment to demonstrate the concept is to size a rubber band and place it around an object it narrowly fits when stretched. After a few days, remove the rubber band and size it again. “The rubber band no longer returns to its original size,” Denti said. The stretching also weakens the rubber band, making it easier to break. The same’s true for metal cables that aren’t made with that important low relaxation. “We don’t like lagging steel,” Denti said. Additionally, workers have to be very careful about concrete they pour curing too quickly. Concrete cured too fast is prone to splitting. “The kiss of death for any concrete structure is cracks,” Denti said. Cracks allow moisture to reach steel girders and corrode them. As steel corrodes, it swells, which can generate more concrete cracks. Rachael Wallace, public info officer for the project, said community interest in the project remains high. “As we’re approaching the bridge opening, viewing the (areal pictures) of each month is great for anyone to see the bridge coming together,” she said. “As we get closer (to finishing), people can see we’re closing the bridge gaps.” Those pictures are at indianstreetbridge.com. Martin County sheriff donates TV to nonprofit Tykes and Teens MARTIN COUNTY — Following a visit and tour of nonprofit children’s counseling center Tykes and Teens, Martin County Sheriff’s Office representatives were impressed with the work the agency was doing for local kids in need, and eager to offer assistance. Tykes and Teens’ employees mentioned that the television in the training room was broken, and the next day the agency received a call to say that the Martin County Sheriff’s Western Operations Division, under the direction of Sheriff William Snyder, would donate a television to Tykes and Teens, using funds from a specialized private grant
established to help children in our community. The television will help in the staff training process as well as give counselors the ability to use therapeutic viewing materials in group sessions, including the Adolescent Substance Abuse Program, an alcohol and drug prevention and treatment program for local youth. Sheriff Snyder presented the donation at a Tykes and Teens Board meeting and commented that “Tykes and Teens is an outstanding organization that we are proud to support.” Established in 1996, Tykes

STUART — Many of the summer programs in the area involve sports or the arts. For youngsters 12-16 who are interested in preserving Florida’s waters, the Florida Oceanographic Society is offering new Special Immersion programs to inspire them to be good stewards of the environment. Campers will learn how to identify Florida’s aquatic residents and conduct fish surveys while exploring popular snorkeling sites from Fort Pierce to West Palm Beach. The survey data each participant collects will; be added to the REEF. org database. The program runs from July 8-12. Campers should bring a mask, snorkel; and fins. Shannon Dack, education specialist Florida Oceanographic, said snorkeling is all the campers in this program are going to do. Campers will learn proper techniques and safety measures as they snorkel every day. Teens and pre-teens from 1214 can learn all about saltwater fishing in this program, Saltwater Fishing 101. It runs from July1519 and from July 29-Aug. 2. This program is not just about the thrill of the catch. Campers will learn about fish biology, conservation, fishing tackle and methods. They will be able to test their skills by fishing in our local waters. All fishing gear is supplied. The program is offered in partnership with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. For teens 13-16 who are serious about the environment and want a hands-on experience, Stewardship and Restoration is the program for them. Campers

Shannon Dack said these programs have several purposes. “These courses are the perfect opportunity for young adults to immerse themselves in nature and gain a greater appreciation and understanding of our coastal ecosystems through education, interaction and fun-filled activities,” she said. “Instead of dabbling, the kids will really ‘get their hands wet’ with it, “At the completion of each session, participants will receive a certificate of completion. It’s a great résumé builder and a perfect way to stand out in a sea of college applications.” Florida Oceanographic Society, located at 890 N. E. All-on-Four/Teeth in a DayTM was developed to minimize the number of implants required to anchor a complete set of dentures. A full arch can be replaced with four implants in a single visit, as opposed to as many as eight implants and multiple office visits.
