PALM CITY — Kenneth Ferguson, 84, died earlier this month. “He was a pillar of the community,” Ed Ciampi, former county commis-

sioner, said. “Everyone knew him. He was a great guy who was involved with everything.” The Korean War veteran was born in Marion, Ind. He moved to Martin County from Cape Elizabeth, Maine, almost 50 years ago. He moved his company, Hoosier Metal Fabrication, to Stuart. The company was renamed

ERK Manufacturing. Today it’s part of Paradigm Precision. Joe Catrambone, executive director of the Stuart/Martin Chamber of Commerce, said Ferguson was an avid volunteer and contributed to many people’s business and personal suc-

Mowery announces run for Congress Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TREASURE COAST — Tod Mowery made an anticipated announcement that he’s running for the 18th Congressional Seat now occupied by Patrick Murphy. The district covers St. Lucie and Martin counties, along with a sliver of Palm Beach County’s northern side. “The idea of being a public servant isn’t something that I woke up one day and said, ‘Hey, I’d like to try this (public service),” he said. Mowery is a second-term St. Lucie County commissioner. He has degrees in business management and urban and regional planning. He’s worked in municipal management in Michigan and on the Treasure Coast and boasts that he’s done every government service from plowing snow to checking out books at the library. Additionally, Mowery spent public

career time at the Mission of the United States Geneva, United Nations, and in Zambia. The pilot is a board member of Missionary Flights International, Fort Pierce. “For me, public service is a part of my DNA,” he said. Mowery said he’s in listening mode and unwilling to offer specific plans yet. However, he said the most important issue facing the 18th Congressional District is obvious to most everyone: pollution of the St. Lucie and Indian rivers. “The environment and what’s going on with our environment,” he said. “That will remain a continual issue for this district.” For many, the Goliath in the water battle is the Army Corps of Engineers’ releases of nutrient-rich Lake Okeechobee waters into area waterways through the C-44 Canal. That water travels to the St. Lucie and Indian rivers. Mowery said that those discharg-

Help Mapp the future of Palm City M

app Road needs our help. On Monday, June 8, the Old Palm City Neighborhood Advisory Committee will meet at Blake Library to discuss swaying the County Commission to keep Mapp on the map for starting long-discussed improvements. The commission is poised to remove Mapp from its five-year capital improvement plan, which would likely kill the proposed Mapp Road Town Center Design. That meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. While the meeting is ostensibly about Mapp, it’s truly about Palm City’s future. Will Palm City ever have a charming area that draws shoppers and diners west across the bridges, or will it always be the residential outlier sending patrons to Osceola Street in Stuart, Jensen Beach Boulevard, or even the charming, small downtownesque section of Port Salerno along Old Dixie Highway? Back in the early 2000s, a lot of folks went to public meetings and crafted a vision for a pedestrian-friendly Mapp Road with a small downtown ambiance. The idea was to have a romantic spot right here to give Palm City a sense of community, keep and attract patron dollars, and raise property values. The County Commission created the Old Palm City Community Redevelopment Area, CRA, to save up property-tax nickels to help turn the vision into a growing reality over 30 years. The CRA has about $1.4 million in its account,

OUR

Patrick McCallister money that can revert to the county’s general fund if not used. Central to the idea of a New Urbanism Mapp Road was addressing one of Old Palm City’s bedeviling problems: flooding. The New Urbanism Mapp Road Town Center Design existed almost exclusively in architects’ renderings and Old Palm City Neighborhood Advisory Committee conversations for about 15 years. The ship weathered numerous storms — a legal challenge, the Great Recession, varying visions, and the time it takes to save up enough CRA funding to do projects. Perhaps the most important recent development to the Mapp Road New Urbanism plan was the hiring of Kevin Freeman, the

county’s community redevelopment director. He took a look at the previous proposed Mapp Road redesign and realized that its storm-water management was land greedy. That seemed to defeat much of the intention behind the Mapp Road redesign. Being from England — a place where developed spaces are squeezed and new things have to be fit into old ones — he discussed the storm-water land greed with the Neighborhood Advisory Committee and together they came up with innovative ideas to get champagne storm-water management on a land beer budget. The solution to creating the downtownesque Mapp Road that helped solve storm-water issues became divided service roads with on-street parking on some sections, rain-garden landscaping, and 8-foot sidewalks with permeable concrete that allows water to seep right through into underground reservoirs that start sediment collection before water reaches the St. Lucie River. The brilliance of the Neighborhood Advisory Committee’s and Freeman’s planning is that not only does the proposed design create that New Urbanism that’s so popular with most environmentalists, because it maximizes space use and encourages walking and bicycling, but it also helps address a local environmental issue: pollution of the St. Lucie and Indian rivers. But, the Old Palm City CRA doesn’t have the money to create all that innovating design for now, and Mapp is creeping further into the county’s infamous maintenance backlog with each passing day. Terry Rauth, deputy county engineer, said that the roadway between Martin Downs Boulevard and Martin Highway, is at 5.2 on the county’s 1-10 road rating system. Anything under 6 needs resurfacing, and is on the quick slide to needing reclaiming. Rauth said resurfacing costs about $100,000 a mile and reclaiming about $250,000. In April, Freeman with a unanimous nod from the Old Palm City advisory committee, took the County Commission a plan for a 1.4 million Community Redevelopment Area project to resurface Mapp Road and improve its swales, along with adding bike lanes and more sidewalks to connect existing ones. This was to be an initial phase that would

form the backbone to adding the innovative design in modules over several years. Had the commission approved the project at its April meeting, work could have started later this year. Old Palm City Community Redevelopment Area funds would have paid for it. The commission nixed the plan in a 3-2 vote. Sarah Heard, Port Salerno, was the most vocal critic of Mapp Road work. She cited the county’s about $250 million maintenance backlog and a need to start work on a septic-to-sewer plan in Old Palm City as reasons to nix Mapp Road work. Some prominent area environmentalists have publicly cheered the commissioners who shelved Mapp Road in favor of sewer lines, and urged them to hold the line no matter what public pressure comes. From an environmental point of view, the cheer is misguided. The Mapp Road work stands to help reduce the notorious enteroceoccus — fecal bacteria — pollution of the St. Lucie next to Old Palm City. The proposed Mapp Road work, which has defined timeframes, stands to help manage the flow of untreated storm water into the river in a few ways. Not only are there plans for increasing the capacity of Mapp’s storm-water retention with the hollows under those proposed sidewalks with permeable concrete, but attached to that is an innovative idea for creating a water train through the neighborhood east of Mapp. That is a series of small storm-water treatment areas without acquiring additional rights of way or property. Under the plan, storm water moving from Mapp would make several stops before getting to the St. Lucie. The less water flowing unmanaged through Old Palm City, the less septic contents that can flow into the river. As to the current proposed septic-to-sewer plan for Palm City that folks such as Heard are saying to put the CRA funding toward— Well, there isn’t one. Who knows when there will be one. It is important to eventually move Old Palm City to sewer. Fixing Mapp Road to increase storm water management and property-tax values to afford sewer in the future is the best apparent path to get there. To learn more about the Old Palm City CRA and the Mapp Road Town Center Design, go to www. martincountycra.com. Patrick McCallister is a staff writer for Your Voice News & Views and also a current resident of Mapp Road.

Ask the Anytime Gal: Expert answers to your health and fitness questions Q

I’m just too exhausted and I can’t get motivated. I’d rather relax. Is that so wrong?

uestion: I just turned 55. I don’t know what kind of exercise to do at my age and I’m worried about injury. What do you recommend? Answer: Fifty-five is still young and unless you have an injury, you will have few limitations. Start with moderate activity, which is safe and recommended at any age, and then build slowly. Moderate activity should cause a slight increase in heart rate and breathing. It should feel somewhat challenging, but you should still be able to carry on a conversation without difficulty. Listen to your body, and don’t try to do too much, too soon. If something is painful, ease up or find a less intense activity. Walking, biking, yoga, tai chi and swimming are all excellent activities for the cardiovascular system, but you should also incorporate some strength training two-three days a week. Maintaining muscle mass is particularly important as we age. You might

Linda Lawrence consider working with a trainer. It’s a safe and easy way to get started. A good trainer can teach you a safe routine and gear it to accommodate any injuries or physical limitations you may have. And, of course, always check with your doctor before beginning any exercise program. Question: Everywhere I go these days, I hear how important exercise is, but by the end of the day

Sell your gently used fashion today for a new style tomorrow!

Answer: If you are exhausted at the end of the day, that’s all the more reason to exercise. Research shows that as few as 10 weeks of regular exercise can leave people feeling more energized than they did prior to engaging in an exercise program. Here are a couple of suggestions that may help: If you find you lack motivation at the end of the day, part of your problem may be timing. Don’t put exercise off until you’re too tired to do it. Plan your workout for the time of day when you feel most energized. A 20-minute walk or jog before heading off to work may be just the ticket. Or you may be able to use your lunch hour for a quick trip to the gym. Just don’t skip lunch, though; that will leave you feeling more drained. Nibble on a sandwich at your desk when you get back. Something else that helps many people is to make an appointment to workout. Make an appointment to meet a friend or start out by

working out with a trainer. It’s a lot harder to skip your workout when someone else is counting on you. We all struggle with motivation from time to time, but by continually putting off activity, you’re turning it into a nagging chore, and that could be part of what’s making you feel so lethargic. Regain control of the situation and start exercising today! Question: I have a friend that follows a vegan lifestyle, and she’s trying to get me to do the same. Is this something you’d recommend for improving overall health and wellness? Answer: This is a tough question, and one that finds passionate supporters on both sides of the fence. Nutritionally speaking, there are clear benefits to following more of a vegetarian lifestyle, and some studies even indicate the reversal of several chronic diseases. The research is fascinating and, as a result, near-veg-

Butterflies in bloom at Pinder’s Nursery June O’Brien FOR YOUR VOICE

PALM CITY — Imagine standing inside a large screened-in cage surrounded by an array of colorful butterflies flitting all about you. Pinder’s Nursery has erected a walk-in butterfly pavilion. There you can wandered down a circular graveled path within a white screened cage. Each crunching step will take you to a different section designed with the appropriate plants for a particular butterfly species. At the end of this pathway there are two park benches where one can reflect on these fragile beauties of nature: The black-and-white striped zebra longwings swirling about the purple passionflowers, the orange-winged gulf fritillaries sitting almost motionless as they drink nectar from red clustered flowers where their brown-white mosaic markings on the flipside of their wings are revealed, the dramatic black-winged swallowtails spotted with turquoise and yellow laying eggs on the parsley

TREASURE COAST — News that Congressman Patrick Murphy survived the recent train derailment in Pennsylvania and stayed onboard to assist others generated calls to his Washington, D.C., office. Thing is, Murphy hasn’t been in Congress for about four years. “The two get confused a lot,” Richard Carbo, spokesman for Murphy said. “Sometimes they put the wrong picture of the Congressman.” With about 436,000 Patrick Murphys in the United States — according to www.futureboy.us — one was bound to be elected to Congress sometime. Or two. That’s what happened. Patrick Murphy the Iraq War veteran and derailment survivor and hero was elected to Congress in Pennsylvania’s 8th District in 2006. He was defeated four years later. Patrick Murphy the sitting Congressman representing the Treasure Coast — Florida’s 18th Congressional District — was elected in 2012, and re-elected in 2014. There is, by the way, a Murphy representing Pennsylvania’s 18th Congressional District. His first name is Tim. To make things more interesting, the Pennsylvania Patrick Murphy was born in 1973. The Florida Patrick Murphy was born in 1983. Tim Murphy took office in 2003. Catch all those 3s? Three men named Murphy. Two named Patrick. Two representing the 18th Congressional District. Coincidence? The Florida Murphy is yielding the House seat in a bid to become Florida’s next junior Senator. There’s already a Senator Murphy. Chris Murphy is the junior Senator from Connecticut. Carbo, who works for the Florida Murphy, said news outlets occasionally run the congressional portrait of the Pennsylvania Patrick Murphy alongside stories. “Most of the time people are just using the official headshot of

U.S. Representative Patrick E. Murphy (FL-18)

U.S. Representative Patrick J. Murphy (PA-8)

‘Patrick Murphy,’” he said. Carbo said so far no news outlet has inadvertently run a picture of either Patrick Murphy the Irish Giant, or Patrick Murphy the mercenary pilot who accidently bombed Naco, Ariz., rather than Naco, Mexico, in 1929 during the Cristero War. But it would be kind of funny if they did.

etarian diets have been espoused by the likes of Nathan Pritikin and Dean Ornish for years. That said, the more strict the diet is (and veganism is very strict), the harder it is to maintain in the long run. In addition, animal foods are high in several key nutrients that positively affect your health. They also add unique textures and flavors to a given meal, and enhance the palatability of a number of dishes. In the end, it’s important to eat a balanced, nutrient-dense diet that incorporates all of the major food groups. Though I personally don’t advocate veganism, I would strongly encourage you to make plantbased foods a larger part of your

diet. Then, you can make the personal decision as to whether veganism is right for you. Linda Lawrence is the owner of Anytime Fitness in Palm City. At church, Ferguson was a Eucharistic minister for St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Stuart, and worked with the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Palm Beach Diocese. Ciampi said Ferguson was humility personified. “He was a class act and real gentleman,” he said.

keep busy. He rented an office where he spent a few hours a day working on his hospital business and other duties he incurred. He remained there until I encouraged him to come to work with the chamber as a business consultant. He accepted and began in 1998 and retired in 2013. He provided pertinent information and personal advice to hundreds of chamber members and new businesses. He loved the chamber and what it stood for. He was a team player, always ready to assist, which at times included taking trash out to the Dumpster. After retiring from the chamber he was awarded a “Lifetime Achievement Award” by his peers. Our chamber and the community were indeed fortunate to have had a man of his caliber and integrity a part of us. Unfortunately, they just don’t make them like that anymore. write this month’s report with a heavy heart, yet with the joy of having known a very special, unique gentleman, Ken Ferguson. I was employed by the chamber in 1989. I asked chamber staff to give me the names of people in the community I should meet and introduce myself to. The recurring name was Ken Ferguson. My curiosity led me to ask who Ken Ferguson was and why I should meet him. I was told he was a stalwart of the chamber and in fact the community. He is a past chairman of our board of directors, chairman of the Martin Health Systems Board, involved in the United Way as a founder amongst many other things. In my mind’s eye, someone I needed to know. Within a month of arriving in Martin County, I phoned Ken, introduced myself and invited him to lunch. Ken graciously accepted, had lunch at Monarch Country Club and became friends immediately. We played golf, sipped a few cocktails, traveled to Tallahassee every year and worked together for many years. He was my “go-to guy” when I needed advice and/or mentoring. I miss him dearly! Ken moved to Stuart in 1967 as general manager of Hoosier Metal Fabricators. He co-founded and was president of E.R.K. Manufacturing, which grew from six employees with annual sales of $90,000 to 65 employees and sales of over $4 million in 10 years. The firm was acquired by Chromalloy American Corp., then by Turbo Combustor Technologies and today is Paradigm Precision. After Ken retired from ERK, he decided to take up consulting to

and dill plants. Don’t be surprised if a large Monarch butterfly sits by you. Its black-and-white spotted body matching the trim border of its bright orange wings — a beautiful sight especially close up. And remember to look to the top of the pavilion to view the marvel of metamorphosis. Two-stories above a variety of cocoons hang by near invisible threads as they await to emerge into a multi-colored butterfly. The new pavilion had been a dream of Marvin Pinder “to educate the community” on the butterflies of the area. It complements the already existing

classes the nursery provides on butterflies, the plants that host the larva, the caterpillar, and the nectar plants that attract butterflies. A successful butterfly garden needs both host and nectar plants. The new pavilion illustrates a clear map on how people can design their own butterfly gardens. June is the peak of the butterfly season, making it the best time to visit. Pinder’s butterfly pavilion is at 5500 S.W. Martin Highway. It’s open Mondays through Saturdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Secret Legend of the Horn of Plenty E

The

xclusively designed and handmade by Diamonds By Terry the Iced Sherbert Line. One of a kind design. 14kt. Yellow and white gold 6.80dwt. One fancy Triangle cut Green Amethyst weighs 7.13cts. Fancy cut Citrines total weight 9.38cts. The bail is channel set with 3 round brilliant diamonds VS-F-G color total weight .31cts. The Horn of Plenty is from the Latin, cornucopiae, meaning an inexhaustible abundance of richness and plenitude. In addition to being strongly linked to angels, 2,000 years ago the Greeks believed in an enormous magical horn that overflowed with dazzling gold and silver coins. Pursued by many, envied by all, The Horn of Plenty brought great wealth to whoever possessed it. The story of this beautiful and valuable cornucopia jewel reappears in the story of Zeus’s birth. Zeus had a father named Cronus, who had overthrown his own father, and a mother named Rhea. Cronus learned he would suffer the same destiny with one of his own children, and in order to try and prevent this prophecy from happening, he swallowed all of his children as soon as they were born. But by the sixth, Rhea devised a plan to stop him. She found a stone and wrapped it in swaddling clothes and gave it to Cronus. Cronus swallowed the stone and Rhea crept away to a crystal cave where she gave birth to Zeus. Zeus was nursed by Amalthea, the divine goddess of nourishment, who had the power to change from a beautiful nymph into a goat with soaring horns that curled all the way to her back. She nursed and raised Zeus, feeding him milk and honey. One day, legend has it, one of her horns broke off so she filled it with herbs, pomegranates, grapes and other bounteous fruits. In return, Zeus bestowed upon it the magical ability to grant wishes. When the receiver made a wish, the horn would be filled with whatever the receiver wished to have.

STUART — The Barn Theatre has announced it lineup for the 2015-2016 season. It will be the Barn’s 45th season of bringing community theater to the public. While the schedule is known, the exact dates will be announced later. The first show will be the female version of Neil Simon’s classic, “The Odd Couple.” The script was revised for the female version by Simon and features Florence Unger and Olive Madison. It will be presented in September or October. The second show, in November, is a classic murder mystery, “Laura.” It is based on a Vera Caspary novel that was made into the film starring Gene Tierney in the title role.

No season is complete without a farce, and Michael and Susan Parker are the go-to playwrights for the genre. “Sex Please, We’re Sixty,” will be presented in January or February. For the annual musical, the barn has selected another classic, “Guys and Dolls.” The Frank Loesser musical about the romance between a Salvation Army worker named Sarah Brown and a high-flying gambler named Sky Masterson won a Tony Award for Best Musical. It was later made into a movie with Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine as the put-upon Adelaide. It will be presented in March. “Send Me No Flowers” was a dark movie comedy starring Doris Day, Rock Hudson and Tony Randall. It centered on a hypochondriac who thought he was

dying and was trying to find his replacement to take care o his wife. Before it was a movie, it was a play by Norman Barasca and Carroll Moore. The show will be presented in April or May. The season ends in May or June with a Daniel Simon play, “The Convertible Girl.” The comedy is about a Jewish man who is dating a younger women who is not Jewish. He won’t marry her because he’s paying alimony and his mother is deeply religious. The young woman agrees to convert and becomes more religious than he is. Simon was the older brother of Neil Simon and was a comedy writer for many years. He is said to have been the inspiration for Felix Unger. Jeanette Mazzella is theatrical vice president for the Barn. In a statement, she thanked the audiences who have made each season a success. “I want to thank the patrons for coming out to support the shows we put on this season. We enjoyed record-breaking ticket sales because of your support. We also want to thank the directors, producers, stage managers, technical team and actors who have stirred your imagination and touched your soul with the magic of theater. “We expect the tradition to carry into next season with these six major productions. Our happiness is the thrill of a ‘full house, standing room only,’ and we can achieve this by giving our patrons quality shows. Get ready for a surprise or two as our Concert Series continues through 2016. We also encourage the public to become a part of our family by becoming a Barn member.” The Barn Theatre is located at 2400 SE Ocean Blvd., Stuart. MARTIN COUNTY — Jose Torres wanted to direct the Barn Theatre’s upcoming production of the Tony-winning comedy-drama “God of Carnage,” by Yasmina Reza, because it was a departure from the usual community theater fare of comedies and musicals. “It’s interesting,” he said. “There are two couples that confront personal issues. An 11-year-old boy, Benjamin, strikes a boy, Henry, with a stick, and knocks out two front teeth. The parents meet. What begins as a civil discussion devolves into a yelling match.” The fur flies at the Barn May 29-June 14. Katie Horn and Patrick Sheehan play Veronica and Michael, whose son was hit. Sonja Horton and Steve Cohen are Annette and Alan, parents of the aggressor. “What sets it off is the minute when you tell (someone) how they should be raising their child,” Torres said. “A lot of people compare it to Albee’s ‘Virginia Woolf,’ but it reminds me of Ralph and Alice Kramden in ‘The Honeymooners.’” Torres said the couples begin as

CARNAGE from page 25 polite acquaintances, then attack each other and move in shifting alliances. “Most of us abide by the rules,” he said. “We go into the world being courteous, polite, putting ourselves in uncomfortable situations in public, our jobs, and yes, our homes. We put up with bad service, rude people, lack of respect and one day, one moment, we find we have had enough and reveal how we really feel. This play is about that one day, that one moment. Then throw in a hamster, clafouti (a French dessert), idiotic knick knacks and vintage rum.” Torres is retired from his job helping disabled vets find employment. His foray into theater began in 2005, when his wife gave him six acting lessons for Christmas. “I had expressed an interest,” he said. “My son did some filming in college and I saw him acting. I wanted to do it, wanted to act. The first time I went on an audition, I was terrible. I had only had six lessons. What captivated me was being part of the theater. I did stage managing and went into directing. I love working with actors. Everybody comes to the theater with vulnerability. “They put their fears aside and take a role and go on the stage.

The audience doesn’t see the fear and doubt. It’s very intimate between the director, stage manager and actors. I was captivated by the part that leads to the show.” This is Torres’ second show as a director, but he has staged-managed 15 shows. For this production, Howard Brown is his stage manager. Torres said that the show is 90 minutes without an intermission and that it has language and themes that are for mature audiences. He noted this this is the last play in the Barn’s current season. “I think they saved it for last because it is a bit of a risk. The Barn is taking a risk, putting out this type of play. I hope the audience is receptive and supports the show and maybe we can do more of this type of show. You have to take risks and educate people. Actors want roles that challenge them. You can give an audience musicals and comedies, but out of five or six shows, you can give a drama with a message in there.”

Tips for a happy, healthy summer from the Martin County Health Department FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

As area residents prepare for the summer season, the Florida Department of Health in Martin County is offering these tips for staying healthy in the coming months.

Golf Memberships For Summer 2015 Season

1. Avoid contact with algae

Residents are urged to avoid contact with visible algae in the water. Cyanobacteria, a type of blue-green algae, can release toxins that can be harmful to people and pets. Additional information is available at www.MartinCountyHealth.com. If you spot bluegreen algae, please contact the State Warning Point at 1-800320-0519.

May 1st - Oct. 31st Single - $250 Family - $400

Summer season is also mosquito season. Some mosquitoes carry harmful diseases. Martin County Mosquito Control and the Health Department urge residents to do their part to stop mosquitoes from multiplying around homes and business. Log on to www.MartinCountyHealth.com and learn to “Drain and Cover.” Mosquito Control is available by calling (772) 288-5657.

3. Stay hydrated, use sunscreen, practice water safety

Take care to protect yourself from the summer sun. Stay hydrated by drinking water at least

every 30 minutes while outdoors. Wear a hat and sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s damaging rays. Practice water safety and never leave a child unsupervised near a pool or body of water.

4. Practice proper food safety

Frequent hand washing is the best way to prevent the spread of disease. Keep raw foods and utensils separate from each other. Cook foods to temperature. Promptly refrigerate leftovers to prevent the growth of bacteria.

4. Naegleria fowleri

As temperatures rise in freshwater lakes and ponds, so does the threat of the parasite, Naegleria fowleri. The amoeba is found in the sand and silt of freshwater and although rare, can cause a fatal infection in humans. The safest way to prevent infections is to avoid swimming in warm standing waters such as lakes and ponds. Using nose clips may also reduce your chances of becoming infected. More information is available at www.cdc.com.

5. Raw shellfish

Residents with liver disease or a weakened immune system should avoid eating raw or undercooked seafood, especially oysters, because of the risk of Vibrio vulnificus. These naturally occurring marine bacteria can also infect exposed wounds in saltwater.
