By Patrick McCallister Staff writer pmccallister@yourvoiceweekly.com The County Commission inched toward a possible breakup with the Business Development Board of Martin County, but commissioner John Haddox, Palm City, said he’d like to save the relationship with new terms. He failed to convince fellow commissioner Anne Scott, Hobe Sound, that the 22-year-old marriage can be saved. “We could spend hours, maybe days, about how this so-called public-private partnership is dysfunctional,” Scott said at the last regular meeting, Tuesday, April 23. Commission Chair Sarah Heard, Port Salerno, said that the board was deaf to the commission.

The Lego Club helps younger children start learning about the applications of science, technology, engineering and math. The Martin County Library System is making at least half of its children and youth programs related to STEM education. Cummings is launching Discover Science @ Your Library, a monthly science lesson, on Wednesday, May 15. Up to 20 attendees will get free miniature greenhouses to plant beans and watch them grow at home. For information, call Susan Hellenschmidt, children’s assistant, at (772) 288-2551. Emilio lives in Palm City.

Monday, April 22, there were 11 home burglaries in Port St. Lucie. At press time, they remained under investigation and no suspects had been arrested. “Last Monday we had 11 burglaries,” Master Sgt. Frank Sabol, public information officer of the Port St. Lucie Police Department, said. “We were hit within the western part of the city. We’re

trying to see if they’re linked to the pillowcase burglaries.” He said patterns of the burglaries were slightly different than that used by a seemingly organized gang of burglars that appears to be operating from Broward County along the Treasure and Space coasts.

Putting their faith in humanity By Patrick McCallister Staff writer pmccallister@yourvoiceweekly.com

meetings, and around 300 are receiving the not-for-profit organization’s newsletters. It’s based in Stuart. Beck said that while most secular humanists are either agnostic or atheist, an atheist is not automatically a secular huJoe Beck manist. Atheism simply means that one doesn’t believe there are one or more beings that qualify for being considered God or gods. Atheism, he said, carries no explicit or subtle meaning besides that. “Humanism is basically a rational, compassionate, human-centered way of life,” Beck said. “Humanists strive to live fulfilling lives that aspire to help humanity without reference to a god, supernatural creatures, or religion.” Beck was born into a Catholic family. From an early age, he thrilled in

Kay Stern has faith — faith that people can meet all the challenges of life without looking for help from any god. “I was born Jewish,” the Palm City woman said. “Never religious. As a child, I remember learning about the Holocaust and thinking, there is absolutely no god. I told my mother, man created God.” Stern’s among about 65 members of Humanists of the Treasure Coast. Her husband, Stan, died about a year ago. He, too, was born in a Jewish family, but rejected religion early on. While many turn to faith and prayer when they face death, he refused both. Which was unpopular with some family members, among them one who’d become an exuberant Christian. After he died, friends and family members sometimes tried to comfort Stern with words of faith. She appreciated the sentiments. “My friends said, ‘He’s looking down on you,’” Stern said. “I say, ‘Are you crazy? He’s in me. He’s in my heart. He’s not walking in heaven.’” Joe Beck founded Humanists of the Treasure Coast back in 2008. He said that about 70 attend its regular

There’s an atheist in the foxhole According to numerous reports, Cpl. Patrick “Pat” Tillman’s family has repeatedly claimed that after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, the Arizona Cardinals strong safety left professional football to join the Army because he believed terrorism was a human problem that needed a human solution and prayer wouldn’t fix. He died in Afghanistan on April 22, 2004. Although at first there were accounts of him bravely dying during a battle with Taliban forces, it turned out to be a friendly-fire incident. Some members of his unit have claimed in the press that among his last words was an exhortation to a fellow soldier to stop praying and pay attention to the firefight they were in. A lieutenant colonel later criticized the Tillman family for being atheists on ESPN. He attributed the family’s unrelenting pursuit to find out how Tillman was killed to being atheists without hope for an afterlife.

Life, love, work – it’s a balancing act

A

person I follow on Twitter recently posted, “The successful person takes advantage of time all the time; the unsuccessful person laments in the lack of it.” We are all given the same amount of time each day, yet some people seem to take full advantage of it and others seem to squander it. In it all, the best way to be successful, in my opinion, is to have good time management skills that allow you to build balance in your life. Balance is one of those things that is hard to define, but its presence or absence is readily recognized. To give our lives the best quality we can gain from it, we need to properly balance our employment life, our family life, our body’s well-being, our social/community life, our educational life and our spiritual life. Balance can be knocked out of kilter by one main culprit — ourselves. In all that goes on at work, home, and other places, there is little that you can directly control, other than yourself. A good way to help keep balance is to analyze a situation and determine if you have any control over it. If you do have control over it, assume the control that you have. If you do not have control over the situation, all you can control at that point is your reaction to the situation. The wrong reaction to a situation out of your control can be a great thief of your time. So many times, things that send our days spiraling out of control are things that we cannot control and our poor

Bill Hughes From Your Business Allies reaction to those situations. Keep perspective on what is going on and realize that there will usually be many more things that you cannot change than things you can change. Planning tools can be used to assist with bringing balance and margin to your life. Referencing the earlier quote about time, calendars can do much to handcuff you or they can be successfully used to give you more balance. Try merging your work, family life, and other activities into the same calendar. By putting all of these things on the same calendar, it assists you in seeing where/when things can start to get out of balance. If you have too many meetings for work after hours, you are spending valuable time that could be used in other parts of your life and placing things out of balance. After-work meetings are often

a required and essential part of someone’s job, but if you have input into their planning, set priorities and spread them out over a series of weeks instead of taking the balance out of your schedule. If you cannot avoid having meetings after hours, evaluate catching up on other needed parts of your life on the weekends and in time following the meetings. If your work is taking up too much of your time and sending things out of balance, determine if the results of what you will gain from employment are worth the sacrifices that you are making in other parts of your life. Proper perspective can assist you in getting better balance in your life. In each person’s life, there are usually good and bad things that occur over the course of time. Often, due to the nature of life, we can feel that the negatives outweigh the positives. When things are going well, we can even get the feeling that something must be wrong or bad things are on the horizon, due to our human nature. Focus on the good things in the day or in your past to help you through the tough times. Employment is a blessing, having a family is a blessing, just living in this country is also a blessing. Focus on the flowers amongst the weeds. If you focus on the negative, your perspective will become negative and it will throw you out of balance and will filter into all areas of your life. Set goals in each area of your life. Define what you would like to do or what you would like to achieve in each area of your life. Look at what you are doing each day to help achieve the goals, or what you are doing to keep from reaching those goals. When you achieve the goals, store them in your memory to help you through bad times. Also, when you achieve the goals, set your-

self new goals in each area and continue to grow. Finally, realize that you are not in this boat, rowing solo. We all have the same hours each day. Within our sphere of influence and the world we contact each day, we all can face the same problems and be challenged by not having enough balance in our lives. Seek people and groups that can assist you in achieving balance. Realize that many people in our immediate world are often dealing with the same things we deal with each day. Share with others the struggles you have and allow them to entrust you with their tough times. I have the personal belief that our struggles we survive in our lives can be used to help others who are going through the same or similar circumstances. Sharing these things will allow you to realize that others are not really that different than you, and both can help each other be accountable in keeping a healthy balance in life. SHOW from page 3 Kimberly Lucas, branch director at the H. Wayne Huizenga club, said folks should go to the show, whether or not they have children at the Boys & Girls Clubs. “To see what these kids have been doing the last couple years,” she said. “They’re really excited. They look forward to it. They like to be seen.” The five clubs serve more than 3,000 youths a year with after-school programs, summer camps and community outreach activities. The children are 6 to 18. The clubs charge $35 a year, but have scholarships for those who can’t afford that. According to a 2011 membership survey, nearly 90 percent of the children and teens reported improved grades after joining the clubs. More than 75 percent reported completing homework assignments regularly. Parents who took the survey ranked results even higher. They claimed that almost 100 percent of the clubs’ participants improved their academic success since joining the Boys & Girls Clubs. Lovely Davilmar, 17, has

For Your Voice News & Views PALM CITY — Twenty-one years ago, families flocked to the theatres to see Disney’s “Aladdin,” the Washington Redskins celebrated their victory in Super Bowl XXVI and Floridians were reeling from the damage of Hurricane Andrew. Another important milestone occurred in 1992 when Pat Pierce joined the staff at Palm City’s Piper’s Landing Yacht and Country Club. Since 1992 Pat has been a steady, supportive, dependable force in Piper’s Landing. On April 4, Piper’s Landing Yacht & Country Club hosted a special luncheon in honor of their office manager, Pat Pierce, to thank her for her continued dedication over the last 20 years and wish her luck in her retirement. “Pat is a special person personally and professionally. At Piper’s she is considered a ‘saint.’ She never gets rattled and has unend-

Catholicism. Even as a child, he enjoyed going to services. But, as Beck got older, the church’s doctrines made less sense. Similarly to Stern with quick decision about Judaism, he increasingly couldn’t accept Catholic theodicy, the attempt to reconcile the belief in a benevolent, omnipotent God that created a universe with evil and suffering in it. While Stern considered the problem of suffering from a more universal perspective, Beck was personal about it. As he got into his middle teens, Beck found it harder to understand why God would let him suffer for doing good. He said that many secular humanists were once deeply devoted to their previous faiths and practices. “I’ve noticed a lot of our members took religion seriously, more so often than (current) believers,” he said. Humanists of the Treasure Coast is trying to expand its membership. Among other efforts, it recently became a sponsor at WQCS, 88.9 FM, the local National Public Radio station. The organization is seeking members at a good time—there may be a growing number who’d be interested in joining. The Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life released a report in October titled, “Nones” on the Rise: One-in-Five Adults

Beck said Humanists of the Treasure Coast gives non-religious folks a community that provides for many of the same social and psychological needs that religions do. He said those who’ve left religions behind sometimes yearn for the camaraderie they had in them. “We know that when you leave religion, people still have a need for companionship and to be surrounded by like-minded people,” he said. Stern said she enjoys the organization’s meetings for the number of well-educated speakers and people at them. “I’m where I belong,” she said. “They’re the most caring people I’ve ever met.” Humanists of the Treasure Coast has regular meetings in Stuart, Port St. Lucie, Vero Beach and Jupiter. lead HCBF Holding Company Inc. Jeff Bell, currently president and CEO of BSA Financial Services Inc. and the Bank of St. Augustine, will remain with the merged organization as president of the Harbor Community Bank, North East Florida Region with responsibilities to manage and expand the footprint of Harbor Community Bank. “We are eager to expand Harbor Community Bank in the rapidly growing St. Johns County market and to provide an excellent platform to continue development of our presence in this market. The Bank of St. Augustine’s four banking offices in St Augustine fits well with our entry into the North East Florida market in June of last year,” said Michael Brown Sr. “After the combination, the two banks

will have assets of approximately $600 million and 17 branch locations. Harbor Community Bank and Bank of St. Augustine currently have deposits in excess of $260 million in the North East Florida Market. Hal Roberts and I view the combination of the two banks as a solid growth opportunity for Harbor Community Bank and the staff and customers of the Bank of St. Augustine.” Mr. Bell added, “Our board of directors chose to become part of the Harbor Community Bank team because of the shared values of both organizations. Harbor’s bankers have a rich tradition of social responsibility and a focus on customer service as well as the successful management of a Florida community bank. We are delighted that this will enable us to continue serving the North East Florida market with greater resources and capital.”

“We haven’t seen a demonstration of good faith,” she said at the meeting. “It speaks volumes that there’s no one from the Business Development Board here today.” Scott moved to suspend additional payments to the board, to seek reimbursement for legal costs related to a 2010 open-records lawsuit, and to request a repayment of more than $600,000 it now has in reserve funds within 30 days. The move seemed to be an opening salvo toward ending the board’s contract with the county. In a contentious vote, the commission approved the motion in a three-two vote. Commissioner Ed Fielding, Stuart, joined with Heard, and Scott to approve the motion. Commissioners Doug Smith, Jensen Beach, and Haddox dissented. Haddox said he largely agreed with the intentions behind the motion, but felt it wasn’t time for the commission to make any drastic moves that could have legal consequences. At the time of the vote, the county’s new attorney, Michael Durham, had a meeting with representatives of the board scheduled for Thursday, May 2. “My intention would be to

initiate at the May 2 meeting a return of all reserve funds immediately,” Haddox said at the meeting. The board serves as the economic-development organization for the county. Some Florida counties have departments responsible for economic development; others have departments and public-private partnerships. In addition to helping established businesses expand, the Martin County Business Development Board works with Enterprise Florida, the state’s economic-development organization, to attract new businesses. It formed in 1991 and in 2009 signed a 10-year contract with the county, which provides $643,000 of its $740,000 budget. The monies come from occupational license fees. In an interview before the meeting, Haddox said the county is getting mixed results for its investment. “I think the Business Development Board is doing a lot of good things,” he said. “But I think the contract is a very bad contract for the taxpayers.” Haddox said that among other counties with public-private partnerships for economic development, typically 40 to 60 per-

cent of the funding comes from private donations. “We’re doing something like 85 percent public funding and 15 percent private,” he said. “The Business Development Board is fulfilling an essential function in the county; I just want to get the contract more in line with where it needs to be.” In a separate interview before the meeting, Heard called the board a “taxpayer boondoggle.” “There’s no performance measures (in the contract) for the board to meet,” she said. “We provide about 95 percent of their

BURGLARIES from page 1 However, Port St. Lucie police recently arrested two suspected in the pillowcase burglaries that struck in Martin County minutes earlier. “We stopped the suspect vehicle on I-95 and arrested two for possession of burglary tools,” Sabol said. Martin County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Christine Christofek said the arrests were a textbook example of citizens and law-enforcement agencies working closely and doing all the right things to catch criminals. “They are currently in our jail,” she said. “The house they were caught in was an occupied dwelling. People were home. The people were able to get a vehicle description and a suspect description.” The residents, she said, avoided confronting the criminals, and called the Sheriff’s Office. So far this year, Martin County has had 16 suspected pillowcase burglaries. Port St. Lucie 14, which does not include the 11 recent burglaries. The St. Lucie Sheriff’s Office reports no recent suspected pillowcase burglaries. In a previous interview, Martin County Sheriff William Snyder explained how the fast, professional burglars work. “The ‘pillowcase’ part refers to the MO, the method of operation, in which the burglar takes a pillowcase off the bed and uses it to place the stolen items,” the Sheriff said. Snyder said this type of burglar operates during the day, typically from about 9 to 11:30 a.m. They’re looking for vacant houses to burglarize while owners are working. “The traditional neighborhood would be $175,000 and above, but not gated,” he said. The burglars will work in teams of about three to four. They often rent late-model cars to drive to crime scenes and sometimes add temporary tinting and bumper stickers to give them the appearance of owned vehicles. They remove the props before return-

funding, and we don’t know what we get in return for that.” In another interview before the meeting, Tim Dougher, executive director of the board, defended its performance. “In the last three years, we’ve announced 2,400 new jobs,” he said. “Those jobs are being filled over three years as we speak.” He added, “The county is getting a lot for their money.” He said the board was open to changes in its contract with the county, and denied that it’s deaf to the commission. “As of now, we are more than willing to look at contract revisions, but we have seen nothing

ing them. They’ll enter a neighborhood and look for homes that seem emptied. “A lot of the time they do try to look professional, like they’re from Comcast or something like that,” Sabol said. Additionally, he explained, “They knock on the door. If no one answers, they’ll send another crew to the back.” Once inside homes, the burglars move fast taking smaller items and get out. Among their apparent high-value targets — guns. In a great insult to Old Glory, Christofek said the burglars — who appear to be operating from Broward County — look for American flags in front of houses. “Which means you might have a firearm,” she said. Christofek said she was unsure how many firearms the burglars have stolen in Martin. She’s also unsure if there’s evidence that they’re keeping the firearms, passing them to other criminals or selling the weapons to otherwise lawful gun owners who’re unaware that they’re stolen. Additionally, she said the burglars seem to look for basketball hoops at yards, a signal that families with children and thus newer electronics live at those homes. The Martin Sheriff’s Office recently had four town-hall style meetings to educate residents about the burglaries. “These have been crowded,” Christofek said. “I expected 30 people at each of these. We’ve had 100, we’ve had 218.” She said the department may schedule more in coming months. So far the burglars seemed uninterested in confrontations. If someone responds to the door knocking, the criminals will ask for fictitious persons and move on. Sabol said never open the door to any unknown individual, and call police if anything feels amiss. The Martin Sheriff’s Office has made 33 arrests of individuals it believes are part of the pillowcase-burglary schemes. There’ve been 92 burglaries in the county since 2011 suspected to be part of it.

The new grass will provide a smooth and consistent speed far in excess of the current speed of the greens. In addition to the greens, we will be making other minor changes to the course and working to improve the overall turf conditions. We know you will enjoy the end result of this effort! Effective Networking Seminar

April 5, 2013

Chamber Presents “A Passion For Service” Workshop May 21st Meet one of the country’s top speakers at this Chamber workshop, which features an overview of effective customer service principles and an establishment of a baseline for winning customers and reducing lost sales. This is an actionpacked workshop filled with proven strategies and techniques to help everyone in your company win customers and reduce lost sales. Bill Drury is a man with a passion. He is on a mission to help businesses create lifetime loyal customers. On Tuesday, May 21st he will present an actionpacked 1/2 day workshop at the Chamber office with proven strategies and techniques to help everyone in your company win customers and reduce lost sales. Some disturbing service facts: FACT: 96% of unhappy customers never complain about discourtesy, but 91% of them will not buy again from a business that offended them. FACT: Customers who encounter poor service tell an average of 11 other people about their bad experience. FACT: 68% of customers who stop doing business with a company do so because of perceived indifference -- nobody cares. FACT: Courting new business can cost up to five times more

than strengthening relationships with current clients. On Tuesday, May 21st there will be a morning (8:30 – 11:30) and afternoon (1:00 – 4:00) presentation of the seminar (both sessions identical), allowing employers to send half their people in the morning and half in the afternoon. The investment is only $99 or $89 for five or more. Call the Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commerce at 772/287-1088, ext. 101 to reserve your spot! Special thanks to Southeastern Printing for sponsoring this event! Zig Ziglar, America's number one motivator says: "...Bill has conducted over three hundred workshops for the Zig Ziglar Corporation -- we always got good reviews. He knows what he is talking about. He has an excellent style of delivery. Your people and your company will be better off after hearing Bill Drury."

are Dental implants right for you?

Now, you have more options. Implant-retained dentures are permanent, and they look, feel, and function like natural teeth. You can smile and eat without fear of slippage. You can go to sleep at night and wake up in the morning with your teeth in place.

Dr. Sohl is on the forefront of implant placement. He has a dental CAT scan unit on premises for computer guided implant placement protocols for Nobel Biocares All-on Four/ Teeth in a DayTM procedures. All-on-Four/Teeth in a DayTM was developed to minimize the number of implants required to anchor a complete set of dentures. A full arch can be replaced with four implants in a single visit, as opposed to as many as eight implants and multiple office visits.

ask about how Botox can help improve your smile Dr. Sohl believes in offering dental facial aesthetics. In order to ensure your new dental reflects your personality and facial features, Dr. Sohl provides state-of-the-art skin rejuvenation.
