“That’s considered, in some circles, full employment,” Odaly Victorio, communications coordinator for CareerSource Research Coast, said. CareerSource used to be Workforce Solutions. The name changed earlier this year. The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity’s monthly jobs re-

port was released on Friday, May 16. Full employment is when there is almost no deficient-demand unemployment. In other words, if employable folks want jobs reasonably suited to their educations and backgrounds,

Veterans home committee visiting Treasure Coast Staff writer

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TREASURE COAST — Martin Commissioner John Haddox worked for four years to get state veterans nursing home on the Treasure Coast. “It’s important to Palm City and every part of Martin County,” he said. “We’ve got 17,000 veterans in Martin County. About 70 percent served from the World War II to Vietnam eras. While Haddox’s efforts to get the state interested in Indiantown failed, he’s glad St. Lucie County will get to make its pitch on Wednesday, June 18. “I am planning on attending the meeting,” Haddox said. “If there’s public comment, I’ll speak on behalf of the Martin County Commission and Martin County veterans.” At stake is construction of the next Florida Department of Veter-

ans Affairs’ state veterans’ nursing home. The 10-member State Veterans’ Home Site Selection Committee will convene at 2 p.m. at an as yet undetermined location on the southern side of Tradition Parkway in Tradition to tour a proposed location for the state’s next veterans’ home. “It’s an opportunity to visually inspect the land recommended to us,” committee member Steve Murray said. Murray is communications director at the state veterans department. He’s served on previous veterans’ home site selection committees. The Florida Department of Veterans Affairs is not associated with the federal Department of Veterans Affairs. Murray said the site selection committee will visit nine sites in six counties and make a recommendation to Gov. Rick Scott and Florida Cabinet at their Aug. 19 meeting. The governor and cabinet will decided where the next

veterans’ nursing home will be. “They don’t have to (follow the committee’s recommendation), but I can tell you with the previous seven homes the governor and cabinet have not gone against us,” Murray said. The public can attend the site tour and make comments. “We meet in the open, in the sunshine,” Murray said. The Tradition Land Company recently donated about 28 acres to St. Lucie County to bolster its bid to get the next home, Wayne Teegardin, the county’s veterans services manager, said. Teegardin said that United Veterans Council of St. Lucie County is considering whether and how to organize local supporters to meet with the committee. “We are going to discuss asking veterans for support and have

them come out there,” Teegardin said. “We want to do it the right way. After (a meeting on Friday, May 23), whatever we decided, we’ll put out the date, time and location. Right now the site selection committee doesn’t have an address where they’re (meeting).” During its 2013 session, the Florida Legislature approved about $100,000 for an independent study to determine whether a new veterans nursing home was needed, and places it could go. Scott and the cabinet considered the study, which Health Strategies did, at a February meeting in Tampa. Murray said that the governor and cabinet opted to send letters to the top 10 counties the study identified as good places for

JOBS from page 1 they can usually find them in short order, because the economy is producing adequate demand. Good as Martin’s news was, it ranked 38th among Florida counties’ employment numbers. Walton County had a 3.2 percent not-seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in April. Monroe, 3.3. In all, 19 of Florida’s 67 counties had not-seasonally-adjusted unemployment rates at 5 percent or lower in April. Overall, the state’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in April was 6.2 percent, which among some economists is counted as near or at full employment. The last time Florida’s unemployment rate was at 6 percent or lower was in June of 2008. Florida’s employment numbers were slightly better the nation’s in April, which was at 6.3 percent unemployment. Things weren’t looking as good in April for St. Lucie, which was hit especially hard by the housing crash in the mid-2000s. The not-seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in the CareerSource Research Coast region, which includes Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee, and St. Lucie counties, was 6.8 percent in April. St. Lucie County was at 7.4 percent. However, that was down from 8.1 percent in March, and 9.4 from the year before. Two years ago, St. Lucie’s April unemployment number was 10.9 percent. At that same time, Martin was at 8.8 percent. Tim Dougher, executive director of the Martin County Business Development Board, said Martin’s apparent complete recovery is built on the solid footing of broad growth. “We got a lot of companies that need five employees here and five employees there,” he said. “We’re seeing a big expansion of our smaller and mid-sized companies here. People are getting back to work, and we’re seeing it.” Victorio said the evidence suggests, also, that companies are hiring for satisfying unmet demand, not rushing forward on optimistic speculation. “One of the things that this last

www.YourVoiceWeekly.com recession and slow recovery has taught us — businesses are more cautious,” she said. “What I see here locally is businesses are working smarter.” She added, “I think you see companies trying to make the right decision and are cautious before they bring someone in.” Victorio said two important indicators of recovering economic normalcy lies in the employment report — how safe people feel to leave jobs, and how confident others are they’ll find them. “Right now, for the state the moving average, job leavers, is 8.7 (percent),” she said. Nine out of every 100 people actively seeking work in Florida had left previous jobs without having an immediate prospect for another. Those who lost jobs make up 56 percent of the state’s job seekers. Those reentering the workforce make up about 26 percent of those actively seeking work. Last year, those who’d lost jobs made up 58 percent of active job seekers, and those who’d left them made up less than 8 percent. Those reentering the workforce made up about 24.5 percent of job seekers. Those entering the workforce and seeking jobs for the first time was at 9.5 percent last and this year. Another indicator that the jobs picture is getting near normal, Victorio said, is that there are fewer employment seekers at job fairs. The unemployment rate is calculated using a variety of methods. Among them are telephone interviews with workers. Those that report not having jobs and looking for employment in the previous 30 days are counted as unemployed. Discouraged workers — those who are able to work and want jobs, but have not sought employment in the previous 30 days — are not counted in the unemployment figure. Many call this “shadow unemployment,” and it’s inherently difficult to track due to variations for why people don’t seek jobs. The Treasure Coast traditionally experiences a slight uptick in unemployment during the summer months.

making donations.” The foundation had to move from its old location in April. For about nine years, the foundation had been at the Caring Fields Animal Sanctuary, 6452 S.W. Markel St., Palm City. The Pegasus Foundation was selling the property. The Yarmouth Port, Mass. animal-welfare organization had let the foundation — and Hobe Sound Animal Protection League — stay without charge. The move was very difficult for the foundation, because horse facilities that can handle 10 or more animals are highly specialized properties. But thanks to a lot of help, the foundation closed on an 8.5 acre property the first week of April and was moved by the end of that month. It’s at 6400 S.W. Martin Highway, Palm City. Kinder said the higher visibility of the new property has helped the foundation already. She said there’s been about a 200 percent increase in volunteers. “It absolutely has helped from day one,” Kinder said. “From the day we put our banners out there, we’ve received phone

calls daily.” Kinder said the new property cost about $400,000. She said the foundation got a 30-year mortgage with a very low interest rate, and a sponsor who’ll pay the interest for a decade. The new property has nine paddocks, 12 stalls, a storage barn and lighted arena. “The property has a real wonderful feeling to it, both for the horses and volunteers,” Kinder said. The foundation is prepping an ongoing fundraiser it’ll roll out during the open house. “We’re calling it our Top Rail Club,” Kinder said. For donations of $10, $15 and $50, folks can purchase signing space on boards at the new property. “All planks can be autographed and dedicated to the person or animal of their choice,” Kinder said. The foundation took in 15 horses last year, and adopted out 11. Most come from the Treasure Coast and Okeechobee, but the foundation has received horses from as far as Miami and Ocala. The foundation is at www.eraf. org. Its number is (772) 2200150.

Michael Jackson reincarnated by Tradition-based company Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer

nrodriguez@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TREASURE COAST — A legend lived once again at the Billboard Music Awards on May 18, but the man behind the magic this time wasn’t the late King of Pop. It was none other than John Textor, the former CEO of Tradition’s now defunct Digital Domain who created the moonwalking apparition of Michael Jackson that left the globe abuzz. Textor’s new business endeavor, Pulse Evolution, incorporated in October and headquartered in Tradition, made the multi-million dollar glowing image of Jackson, which performed “Slave to the Rhythm,” a song off the entertainer’s posthumously released album, “Xscape” at the awards show. Many are calling the image of Jackson, clad in a gold-studded military jacket and maroon trousers with his signature concert curly hair a hologram, but Textor, a Hobe Sound resident, said Jackson’s ghost was not a hologram at all. Textor and his team at his San Francisco studio used “Pepper’s Ghost” to reincarnate the King of Pop. Pepper’s Ghost is an illusion technique commonly used by magicians, theaters and the

create a 3D image, Textor said. The technology is named after John Henry Pepper, who popularized the effect in the 1800s. The famous resurrection of rapper Tupac Shakur at a California music festival in 2012 was also masterminded using Pepper’s Ghost, Textor said. Digital Domain created it. “What makes these performances so compelling is that you’re looking at a computer-generated digital likeness of Tupac and Michael Jackson,” Textor said. “I can promise you, had we just used old video of Tupac projected as an apparition or a ghost hologram-like image, the world would not have been talking about it, hundreds of millions of people would not have seen it on YouTube.” Textor said recreating an entirely computer generated image of Tupac was a small task in comparison to making the dynamic Jackson perform a whole new dance routine. Tupac cost $500,000 and took seven weeks to make, Textor said. “It was so much easier. He was bald. We didn’t have to worry about digital hair. His dance routine was much more side-toside, as a rapper,” Textor said.

“(The) microphone was shoved in front of his face, so we didn’t have to worry that much about the mouth and the facial performance.” “Michael Jackson took the better part of six to eight months. He’s so expressive in his face,” Textor said. “If you look at that performance, notice the neck, it flexes, the tendons that are firing … the vocal performance, he’s screaming it out.” After seeing the uncanny image of Tupac grace the stage in the afterlife, the Jackson Estate approached Pulse about creating the illusion of the late singer, Textor said. Pulse Evolution, first named Pulse Entertainment has a mission to become the best at human animation for entertainment, but also for other purposes including surgical and medical simulation with virtual patients, Textor said. Textor’s team worked closely with the Jackson Estate and choreographers Rich and Tone Talauega, who toured with Jackson and choreographed his music video for “You Rock My World.” Jamie King, who danced with Jackson on the Dangerous World

MICHAEL from page 6 Tour, served as creative director. “We spent an enormous amount of time with the people who knew him best, because we didn’t have Michael around as a reference point. We had incredible video archives to draw on,” said Textor, who never met Jackson. “There were a lot of challenges because Michael was an illusionist with his own makeup. He would use makeup to create expression in his face and he played around with that a lot.” Textor said team members who knew Jackson worshipped him, and for good reason. “Michael represents to a dancer and performer the highest echelon of performance,” Textor said. “He is incredibly soulful, caring and a warm person when you were on his team and were one of the people that he went into battle with theatrically.” The months-long journey was also an emotional roller coaster — the last rehearsal before the live show especially, Textor said. “Everybody was in tears and it was so emotional that I was in tears,” Textor said. “They were connecting with him in a real human level.” While creating Jackson, there was no room for error, Textor said.

“It’s the ‘A-Team of human animation and character animation, so at one level, we felt extremely confident. At another level, we knew there were a billion people that were going to see this. It was really intimidating,” Textor said. “This is one of the most recognizable faces in the world and he’s got one of the most passionate and critical fan bases in the world.” “But the risk of failure is not something you could ever worry about,” he said. “God knows I’ve seen failure time and again and the risk of failure cannot become fear of failure. We always knew we were going to deliver a good result no matter how intimidating it might have felt.” The call to create a Ghost-era Jackson from 1997 was made by the Jackson Estate, although Textor would not divulge why. “To me, it represents a little of ‘early Michael’ and it’s still revealing and mindful of late Michael. It’s sort of at the mid-point of his career,” Textor said. “It connects to the past and gives you a bridge to the future. He’s young and strong and healthy. He’s got a little bit more of his mature look, but he’s still a very strong performer at that period of time. He’s a good looking man and was fun to work with.” Will the image of Jackson tour?

“But the risk of failure is not something you could ever worry about.God knows I’ve seen failure time and again and the risk of failure cannot become fear of failure. We always knew we were going to deliver a good result no matter how intimidating it might have felt.” John Textor executive chairman of the board Pulse Evolution That’s not up to Textor, he said. “We built a digital, very high-quality, virtual Michael Jackson and he certainly has the capacity to do as much as his family, as much as the estate would want him to do,” said Textor, who said Jackson’s brother, Jackie, praised the Port St. Lucie company for its digital reproduction of the King of Pop. Originally, a dancing Gene Kelly was to be the first endeavor for Port St. Lucie’s Pulse Evolution, Textor said. Elvis was also supposed to come before Tupac. Textor said he was in talks with the Presley Estate while he was the head of Digital Domain, but both companies underwent changes, Digital Domain went under and the Presley estate was sold. Digital Domain abruptly filed for bankruptcy in September 2012, leaving hundreds at its Tradition Studios jobless. The $40 million, 115,000-square-foot Tradition animation studio was built with city-issued bonds to the tune of

$39.9 million. Almost a dozen workers from Digital Domain are now employed by Pulse, Textor said. The company has 10 employees at its Tradition office and 50 in California. “The growth will be in Florida. That’s our headquarters,” Textor said. “We just needed to start our first project in California, because we had a team at the ready.” Textor said he hopes to deliver on some of Digital Domain’s pacts of job growth and economic revitalization. “For this kind of business, you can pick any community in the world, but we felt a great connection to the city back when we had a much bigger business. We wanted to be back there and we’ll get bigger as we go,” Textor said. “We’re looking forward to keeping some of the many promises we made to the community when they invited us so warmly. So we’re thrilled to be back.” For more information on Pulse Evolution, visit www.pulse.com.

Running for his own gold Patrick McCallister Staff writer

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

Editor’s note: The writer chose to write this story in first person because of his own connection with the spectrum of autistic disorders. PALM CITY — It’s hard to know just what John Gordon understands. He’s non-communicative autistic. Well, not exactly non-communicative. The 17-year-old gets some messages out loud and clear despite autism. He certainly understands and communicates one thing. John loves to run. And whether he understands it or not, John might be on a run to Special Olympics World Games someday. John recently took top spot in his division for the 110-meter hurdles and second for the 800-meter run at the Special Olympics Florida 2014 State Summer Games at ESPN Wide World of Sports, Lake Buena Vista. That was on May 16 to 17. I met John and his mother, Rachel Miller, at Jock Leighton Park on a beautiful Sunday morning not long ago. First thing, I wanted to get some pictures of the Martin County High School student running. Oh, he ran all

right. And ran. And ran as I took photos. “I did awesome,” he said. That was the last complete sentence I’d hear John say. Everything else Patrick McCallister was one or two words. “Publix.” That’s his way of telling his mom he wants ice cream. But his most common word that day was, “Run.” He wanted to run. “He’s been in Special Olympics since 2007,” Rachel told me. “At the time, he couldn’t express an interest.” So the family entered John into short runs, 25 meters. Over time, the family tried him at longer runs. In 2013, his aunt, Dani Glenn, drove from Barry University, Miami Shores, to work with John. “She works closely with athletes,” Rachel said. “She was seeing things with

MARTIN COUNTY — Treasure Coast Hospice recently received five Hospice Honors recognitions for 2014, with one having an elite distinction. Recipients of this prestigious honor include: Treasure Coast Hospice St. Lucie Assisted Living Residence Team, Treasure Coast Hospice St. Lucie Home Team, Treasure Coast Hospice Martin Skilled Nursing Facility Team, Treasure Coast Hospice St. Lucie Hospice House, and Treasure Coast Hospice Martin Hospice House, who received the elite recognition. The Hospice Honors were established by Deyta, a health care data management service, and

recognize hospices that continuously provide the highest level of satisfaction through their care as measured from the caregiver’s point of view. Deyta used the Family Evaluation of Hospice Care survey results from more than 1,700 partnering hospice agencies around the country contained in Deyta’s Family Evaluation of Hospice Care database with an evaluation period of October 2012 through September 2013. Deyta identified Hospice Honors recipients by evaluating hospices’ performance on a set of 18 satisfaction indicator measures. Individual hospice performance scores were collected for

HOME from page 3 veterans homes requesting letters of interest back from them. “Eight of the 10 counties did send us letters of intent telling us they were interested in bidding,” Murray said in a previous interview. Two dropped their bids. Murray said that St. Lucie and Palm Beach counties were in the original list. Palm Beach didn’t send a letter of intent. Among other things, the state veterans department operates six nursing homes with 120 beds each, and an assisted living facility with 150. The nursing homes are, by far, the department’s largest function. The closest veteran nursing home to the Treasure Coast is the Alexander “Sandy” Nininger Veterans’ Nursing Home, 8401 W. Cypress Drive, Pembroke Pines. The next closest is the Emory L. Bennett State Veterans’ Nursing Home, 1920 Mason Ave., Daytona Beach. Bennett was built in 1993. Nininger in 2001. Murray said the last home was

built in 2010. That was the Clyde E. Lassen State Veterans’ Nursing Home in St. Augustine. That home cost about $30 million to build. The state paid about 35 percent of the costs. The federal Department of Veterans Affairs paid about 65 percent. Other homes are in Land O’ Lakes, Panama City and Port Charlotte. The assisted living facility is in Lake City. The homes stay full. Murray said that on any given day, the state homes are caring for about 860 veterans. St. Lucie County estimates that the annual operating budget of a local veterans’ nursing home would be more than $7 million a year. The homes are intended to serve veterans for a 75-mile radius. On June 5, the committee will meet at Lake Alfred and Bartow. On June 19, in Palatka. Then it’ll meet in Ocala on June 20. Meeting agendas are available by calling (727) 518-3202. Meeting notices are posted at the state veterans department’s website, www. floridavets.org.

the evaluation period and were compared on a question-by-question basis to a national average score calculated from Deyta’s database. Hospices who scored above the average on 85 percent of questions received the honor and hospices that scored above the average on 100 percent of the questions received the elite distinction. “We are thrilled to present Hospice Honors for the second year in a row. We are honored to serve such a dedicated industry, and we look forward to recognizing top performers each year for their hard work and dedication,” said Kevin Porter, president and CEO of Deyta. “Treasure Coast Hospice was one of only three hospices in

Florida to receive the elite designation which really puts us at the top of our industry,” said Leigh Bergstrom, director of compliance at Treasure Coast Hospice. “We are all very proud of the excellent care provided by our teams on a daily basis and these awards are a nice recognition for all our employees’ hard work and dedication.” Treasure Coast Hospice is a non-profit community organization of caring professionals and dedicated volunteers whose mission is to provide compassionate, comprehensive, high quality care for our patients and those who share their lives in St. Lucie, Martin and Okeechobee counties. Services are available to anyone regardless of their ability to pay, including respite care, counseling and bereavement services.

On June 6 from noon-2 p.m., the staff of the Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center at Martin Health invite cancer survivors, their family and friends to join them for an afternoon of inspirational stories, music and lunch. The annual National Cancer Survivors Day will be held on the second floor Resource Room of the Cancer Center at 501 E. Osceola St. in Stuart. “Many patients think they have to be ‘cured’ of cancer to be considered a survivor,” said Marie DeGrosa, the Cancer Center’s site supervisor. “But we emphasize

that survivorship starts the day of diagnosis and continues through the rest of one’s life.” National Cancer Survivors Day is free, but participants must register. To RSVP, call (772) 2235945, Ext. 3736. Martin Health System is a notfor-profit, community-based health care organization that has served the region for 75 years. It offers a continuum of care including preventive, primary and acute hospital care, as well as cancer and cardiac care, wellness and rehabilitation services.

GOLD from page 9 an eye others don’t have.” Dani saw that John had naturally good form and suggested longer and more strenuous events. The family went with the suggestion. The Special Olympics program culminates in the annual World Games. But it has hundreds of local and state events for competitors. John runs the 800 meter, and hurdles now. He took top spot in the 800 meters at the Special Olympics Florida Area 10 Summer Games, April 5. Area 10 includes Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties. Jeff Hancock, director of Special Olympics Florida, St. Lucie Indian River and Okeechobee counties, said John is a natural athlete. “He was actually upset that we pulled him off the track (after the 800 meter),” Jeff said. “He wasn’t winded in the slightest and blew everybody away.” Jeff has done behavioral modification with John for a long time. “John has classic autism,” Jeff said. “John is classified at a level that’s untestable.” In other words, no one has a way to figure out how much John understands. Rachel said her son was diagnosed with autism when

“He was actually upset that we pulled him off the track (after the 800 meter),” Jeff said. “He wasn’t winded in the slightest and blew everybody away.” Jeff Hancock director of Special Olympics Florida he was a toddler. “Repetitive behavior,” she said. “Not playing with his peers. Not verbal.” And the temper tantrums. “It was pretty quickly fit in autism,” Rachel said. After taking pictures and talking, I ran with John. Not for very long, but we ran together. And it was an honor. I could have been John. When I was a child, my mother couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me. Neither could my teachers. I can’t tell you how many times I heard them say, “Earth to Patrick.” I had to crawl into my own world to survive the one I was in. I didn’t even understand this. It would be later in my life that I’d have a qualified psychiatrist tell me, “You have Asperger’s syndrome.” That diagnosis doesn’t exist anymore. Nowadays it falls into the “autism spectrum disorder” diagnosis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that about 1 in every 68 children fall somewhere on the autism spectrum. It’s far more common

among boys, 1 in 42, versus 1 in 189 for girls. Most of us are not autistic like John. Not by a long shot. But we’re on widely divergent places of the same spectrum. So, I understand something about John. “What’s his unique gift?” I asked Rachel. She smiled. I guess it’s not a question about John she hears very often. “Our natural instinct is to say you must (do things) like everyone else,” she said. “His world is sensory. He detects things we miss and overlook.” For a moment, Rachel watched her son as he ran back and forth. “John’s gift will never be ‘practical,’” she added. Perhaps not, but John represents Palm City at the Special Olympics. He carries with him a piece of a lot of us on that autism spectrum every time he represents our community there. I have one word for you, John. “Run.” Patrick McCallister is a staff writer for Your Voice News & Views.

TREASURE COAST — Frank Maitland, commander of the American Legion’s Post 399, Palm City, said he’s not seen problems with locals getting needed care at the Department of Veterans Affairs despite a dizzying whirlwind of unflattering news and congressional hearings after CNN reported that dozens of veterans may have died while awaiting needed medical care at VA medical facilities, “I’m myself personally go to the clinic,” he said. “I’ve always had good service there. I’ve been down to the hospital a few times. I haven’t had a bad experience, but I’ve heard of people who have. As far as appointments and delays, I haven’t heard a whole lot. Every now and then.” Maitland is also the commander of the legion’s state District 11, which includes 22 posts in Okeechobee, Martin and Palm Beach counties. He’s also the vice chairman of Veterans Council of Martin County. He said there might be problems with VA medical care elsewhere, but not in the West Palm Beach VAMC’s area. 1995 to serve 30,000 veterans. Last year, it provided health care to 64,358 veterans. Wayne Teegardin, St. Lucie County’s Veterans Services manager, said local veterans don’t seem to have many problems getting needed care in a timely fashion. “I can only think of one or two instances when people called and said, ‘I called and I can’t get in,’” Teegardin said. “They’re talking about weeks, not months. It seems to me to be flowing pretty well at (the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center),” he said. “We don’t hear hardly any complaints here.” St. Lucie operates a bus service to the West Palm medical facility. Teegardin said the two buses carry about 20 veterans a day on weekdays to the facility. Martin County also has a bus service to the West Palm Beach VA. Congressman Patrick Murphy, D-Jupiter, was among 390 representatives who recently voted to give Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki more authority to fire senior VA employees. On Wednesday, May 21, the House of Representatives approved H.R. 4031, the Department of Veterans Affairs Management Accountability Act, which would give Shinseki, and future secre-

taries, more authority to terminate executives at the VA. However, the Senate version, introduced by Marco Rubio and co-sponsored by Bill Nelson, will await a vote for now after that chamber’s leadership delayed the bill. Rubio took to the Senate floor to urge quick passage. “We are giving a Secretary, appointed by this president, confirmed by this Senate, the opportunity to be able to fire employees of his agency that are not doing their jobs,” he said on the Senate floor. “That is all we are asking here. It is not more complicated than that. And I do not understand why anyone would not support that concept. And it’s right here for us. For everyone talking about how quickly we need to act on this — here is your chance.” Among those voting for the bill was Representative Bill Posey, R-Rockledge. Posey said that he’s confident in Shinseki’s ability to reform the veterans department and clear up the recent scandal if given a strong hand to do so. “I’m not known as one who champions the president’s appointments, but I have to tell you I have been pleased with Shinseki,” Posey said in a telephone interview. VA from page 24 deaths related to the VA failing to deliver timely medical care, there have been numerous reports of secret waiting lists and cover-ups within the VA, too. The news has sharply divided the national veterans community over Shinseki. The American Legion and others have called on Shinseki to step down. The Veterans of Foreign Wars and others, however, have called for strengthening his position. Posey, a staunchly conservative Republican who’s a frequent critic of the Obama administration, said the apparent problems at the VA exist not because of Shinseki, but because he lacks the power to proverbially cast a mountain of bureaucrats into the sea. “He is up against a culture that has (ingrained) itself in the VA that is not conducive to serving veterans, which is their job,” the Congressman said. He added, “Shinseki can tell them what to do, and how to do it — he really has no way to enforce it.” The Florida Department of Veterans Affairs, which is not associated with the federal veterans department, operates six nursing homes around the state with 120 beds each, and an assisted living facility with 150. Steve Murray, communications director, said at any time, the state veterans department has about 860 veterans in its care. Most receive medical care

at VA medical facilities, too. “The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs provides high quality health care for Florida’s veterans through their network of hospitals, outpatient clinics and veteran centers,” Murray said in a telephone interview. “In cases where that standard of care is not met, we share the concerns of all that corrective action will be immediately taken.” Ben Humphries, president of the Vietnam Veterans of America Florida State Council, said he hears little bad about VA medical care when he travels around the state visiting chapters. “We haven’t been having any of these (reported) problems in Florida,” Humphries said. Humphries said he hopes the Senate and president keep and give Shinseki more power to fire executive VA employees. Humphries pointed out that Secretary Shinseki used to be Gen. Eric Shinseki. He served and was wounded in Vietnam. Additionally, Humphries said Shinseki proved he had the administrative mettle to challenge a sluggish culture at the VA. When he was the Army Chief of Staff. Shinseki publically clashed with Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld about needed troop levels for Operation Iraqi Freedom — Shinseki thought they needed to be much higher than Rumsfeld. “The general is doing an outstanding job,” Humphries said.

Albers’ brilliance and the explosive power of color. The first show began in the summer of 2011, with COLOR being the ongoing thread woven throughout each succeeding exhibition. Since then, this art exhibition has become more prestigious, more sought-after, and more difficult to be juried into. Thus, three out-of-town, objective jurors have been hired to assure that the artwork is of the highest quality and meets the guidelines of the inspirational theme. If you consider yourself to be an art aficionado, patron, connoisseur, concerned parent or concerned citizen of Martin County, celebrate with us at the “Celebration of Color” reception at the Court House Cultural Center, 80 East Ocean Blvd, Stuart. PETER’S from page 26 “This was our third year participating in the JDRF walk and we will always invest in organizations that help children because they are our future,” said Peter Wernick, owner of Peter’s Hardware Center. His team included his wife, Angela, and their two children, Alex and Lily. “We are so pleased with the overall results of the Walk to Cure Diabetes this year, particularly from our corporate community,” said JDRF executive director Lora Hazelwood. ‘Business partners, like Peter’s Hardware, helped to contribute more than 30 percent of overall walk revenues.” Russell Schaffer chaired the 5K walk and his wife, Michelle, served as logistics chairwoman. The top three families raised close to $20,000. All three have young daughters with Type 1 diabetes. These families are Gaskins, Navarretta and Bledsoe. The top corporate team was McAlister Properties, which raised more than $4,000. “Family teams contribute the largest share at over half of the total raised but altogether it makes such a difference in our fight against Type 1 diabetes,” Hazelwood said.

The JDRF estimates that more than $1 million has been raised for diabetes research and education over the last decade from the Treasure Coast walk site. Walk to Cure Diabetes is JDRF’s largest fundraising event, held annually at more than 200 sites. Participants enjoyed a complimentary breakfast and lunch, music, children’s activities and entertainment. The event was held to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International. JDRF is one of the most cost-effective agencies in the world, allocating at least 80 cents of every dollar to fund diabetes research and education to find a cure for diabetes. Peter’s Hardware in Palm City supports many community events throughout the year. Store hours are Monday through Sunday, 8 a.m.–6 p.m. For more information, call (772) 600-5088.

Lyric season has something for everyone Staff writer

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

MARTIN COUNTY — The Lyric season, as always, has a little noise, a little funk, and a little something for every taste. Last week’s story gave details on the Nostalgia and Broadway series. For this week, the focus is the best of the rest of the season. Clint Black makes his Lyric debut Nov. 20-21. The superstar singer/songwriter is known for selling more than 20 million albums, but fans may not know that he is proficient on the drums and harmonica as well as the guitar. The National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China present “Cirque Peking” in a kick off to the holiday season Dec. 1. A familiar trio, “A Peter White Christmas,” with guests Rick Braun and Mindi Abair, returns with old holiday favorites and some of their own compositions Dec. 12. Steve Solomon brings his show, “Cannoli, Latkes and Guilt” to the Lyric Jan. 6. The writer and star of “My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish and I’m in Therapy” brings a new show that’s the best of his other shows and has new material, as well. Lyric favorites Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. return Jan. 7. The seven-time Grammy winners

are always a popular ticket. “Vocal Trash” comes to the stage Jan. 15. The group has been described as ‘Glee meets Stomp,’ and the urban-themed production is full of singing, drumming, comedy and break-dancing. It is hard to believe, but 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice Restaurant.” He returns to the Lyric Jan. 2627 with the 50th anniversary tour, a new program that explores uses humor to explore the history of American folk music in the 20th century. Violinist Anne Akiko Meyers comes to the Lyric Jan. 29, playing the famed “Molitor” Stradivarius, the most sought-after violin in the world. The instrument is believed to have belonged to Napoleon and is rarely heard in public. The Capitol Steps bring political punditry to the stage Jan. 30 in a show in which partial proceeds will benefit Volunteers in Medicine. Vince Gill returns to the Lyric, this time as part of Grammy-nominated group The Time Jumpers, for which he plays electric and acoustic guitar and sings. The Feb. 5 performance features the 11-piece group of elite musicians that also includes Dawn and Kenny Sears and

“Ranger Doug” Green. Fans of dance will have the opportunity to see a great dance company and a Tony-award-winning dancer. Ailey II, an offshoot of the famed Alvin Ailey Dance Company, is renowned for taking the spirit and energy of young performers and melding that with the vision of emerging chorographers. They will perform Feb. 9-10. Savion Glover, one of the youngest performers ever nominated for a Tony, for his work in “Black and Blue,” returns to the Lyric Feb. 24. He won a Tony for the choreography of “Bring in ‘Da Funk, Bring in ‘Da Noise,” and played a young Jelly Roll Morton in “Jelly’s Last Jam” on Broadway. Regis Philbin brings an evening of big-band music Feb. 15 as he performs with an 18-piece orchestra. Blues legend John Hammond brings his barrelhouse sound to the Lyric stage Feb. 19. The Blues Hall of Fame acoustic guitar player performed was a fixture in New York City’s Greenwich Village, performing with artists like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Dr. John and Duane Allman. Lyric audience favorite Sarge returns to the Lyric Feb. 27 with a performance that includes singing, comedy and piano-playing. The multi-talented performer has been seen on Comedy Central and HBO. Pure Prairie League, one of the earliest and most successful country rock bands, takes the Lyric stage March 6. “Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry experience-A Parody by Dan & Jeff,” has the longest name of any show. The Olivier Award-nominated parody of all of the “Harry Potter” books is suitable for ages 6 to Dumbledore. It comes to the Lyric March 7-8. Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy, husband and wife and

master fiddlers, bring their native Canada to the Lyric in “Visions from Cape Breton and beyond” March 19-20. Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals brings the pop-soul sound of the group that sang “Groovin’ “and “Good Lovin” to the Lyric March 24. Local legend Doc Grober returns with his Mudcats March 26 with a tribute to Louis Armstrong. LTD: Livingston Taylor, Tom Chapin and The Jammin’ Divas come together for folk music for the 21st century March 27. John Loesser, the lyric’s executive director, said that shows will continue to be added. “We’ll probably add about 10 shows over the summer,” he said. “A lot of pop artists don’t book that far out.” In other Lyric news, Loesser noted that the theater would be closed for renovations from June through October and will re-open sometime in November with yetto-be announced special festivities. “It will be a nice facelift,” he said. ‘We’re remodeling the lobby, there will be new seating in the lobby, new entrances, technical improvements and a new lobby bar. All the orchestra level seating is being replaced with top-ofthe line chairs with cup holders. Seats will be in the same locations as the old ones.” Sales for the new season go on sale the day after Labor Day, although members can purchase them now. Anyone can become a member and purchase tickets immediately. Memberships start at $35. “Over the summer, there will be a box office at the Stuart Coffee Company next door to the Lyric,” Loesser said. “You can also order online.” For membership and ticket information for the upcoming Lyric Theatre season, visit the website, www.lyrictheatre.com.
