Holocaust survivor shares story “By the grace of God and from living one day to the next,” is how Drucker characterized her survival as a nomadic child ripped from her parents. Drucker chronicled her tale of sorrow and hope in her book

PALM CITY — Palm City resident Olga Levy Drucker, 85, survived what is arguably history’s greatest genocide. The Holocaust survivor and published author penned her story and is now sharing her tale of hope and perseverance with children across the Treasure Coast. She recently met with more than 150 sixth-grade students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School at Tradition to teach a lesson of love and tolerance. Drucker, a German native, escaped Adolf Hitler’s Holocaust during her childhood years thanks to the “Kindertransport,” a name given to a series of rescue efforts which brought thousands of refugee Jewish children to Great Britain from Nazi Germany between 1938 Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer and 1940. Holocaust survivor and author Olga Drucker of Palm City presented the story of her youth to the sixth grade students of Palm Pointe Educational Research School in Tradition. See SURVIVOR page 8 Drucker’s book, ‘Kindertransport’, was read by the students during the school year.

Editor’s note: Your Voice News & Views is withholding the names of companies in this story, except for Sharkey Air, to focus on bringing attention to the type of problem Gary Miller encountered and the positive resolution he got. Titusville’s Gary Miller got a new air conditioner, and Palm City’s Kevin Sharkey got to thank a 26year Army veteran for his service. “I’m not a veteran, which makes me appreciate what he did all the more,” Sharkey said. “He’s a

Palm City youth, four others charged with gun thefts and illegal sales Patrick McCallister Staff writer

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PALM CITY — Oftentimes when guns are stolen, irresponsible supervision and storage plays a role. Not this time. A Palm City gun owner took the commonly recommended precautions to keep his weapons out of the hands of children and thieves, but a 15-year old worked his way around them and took five of his guns to school to sell. “(The gun owner) did everything right,” Christine Christofek Weiss, spokeswoman for the Martin County Sheriff’s Office said. “He had a lockbox with a key. But this juvenile had a familiarity with the house and found the key.” That juvenile was ninth-grader Renat Currie, 4335 S.W. Honey Terrace, Palm City. Police say he repeatedly broke into a neighbor’s home and stole five guns, along with about 300 rounds of ammunition. He is charged with five counts of possession of a

firearm on school property and five counts of dealing in stolen property. “Once he had the key, he went back five times,” Christofek Weiss said. Then he took the guns and ammunition to school to sell, according to the Sheriff’s Office. That was at Community Christian Academy, 777 S.E. Salerno Road, Stuart. Police claim Currie and four other youths dealt the stolen weapons at the campus. They are facing similar charges. “This is a situation where this could have been the perfect storm,” Christofek Weiss said. “Two students heard something about guns on the campus, and they immediately went to administration. The administration immediately called us.” The Sheriff’s Office named Currie’s accomplices as Kaleb Santiago, Kody Pitter, Derik Bishop and Mark Gehring. The youths are all 15 to 17. Currie was the only Palm City resident. The suspected illegal gun sales happened in May. While the Sheriff’s Office claims

Currie was able to thwart the gun owner’s precautions, Sheriff William Snyder said it’s always important to take them. Martin County is a frequent Renat Currie target of socalled “pillowcase burglaries.” Snyder explained how the fast, professional burglars work. “The ‘pillowcase’ part refers to the MO, the method of operation, in which the burglar takes a pillowcase off the bed and uses it to place the stolen items,” the sheriff said in a previous interview. Snyder said this type of burglar operates during the day, typically from about 9 to 11:30 a.m. They’re looking for vacant houses to burglarize while owners are working. “The traditional neighborhood would be $175,000 and above, but not gated,” he said.

Employment helpers become job seekers Patrick McCallister Staff writer

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

MARTIN COUNTY — Layoffs hit Workforce Solutions of the Treasure Coast. In a cruel turn for those workers, that’s good news for other job seekers — it’s a sign that things are getting better. Last week the private, not-forprofit employment-assistance corporation had to give pink slips to 16 of its 120 employees. “The offices have been experi-

encing decreased foot traffic,” Odaly Victorio, communications coordinator, told Your Voice News & Views in a telephone interview. “Unemployment has gone down. Some (previous users) have probably been employed.” Victorio said the state’s 24 workforce boards are funded by the federal government through the states, and the funding is dropping. Richard Stetson, president and CEO, said the same in a press release. “Our budgets have always had an inverse relationship with the

re to S ty n Ci Ope lm Pa Now

economy,” Stetson said in the press release. “In tough economic conditions like those experienced recently, funding swells with increases in program funding and special initiatives and in good economic conditions, our budgets don’t fare as well.” Workforce Solutions has two One-Stop Career Center locations each in St. Lucie, Martin and Indian River counties. It has one in Okeechobee. Additionally, it has three mobile units and partnerships with other agencies and centers to offer job-hunting

assistance. “In all, we have 17 access points,” Victorio said. The layoffs, she said, are distributed through the corporation’s offices and centers. Five of the displaced workers were permanent employees of the Workforce Development Board of the Treasure Coast. Two were temporary staff, and nine were state employees whose positions are no longer funded. From July 2008 to June 2009,

Accountant sentenced to 80 months in federal prison Staff writer

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PALM CITY — United States District Judge Donald L. Graham sentenced Joseph Rizzuti to 80 months in federal prison after the Palm City accountant pleaded guilty in April to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one count of obstructing the Internal Revenue Service. “I’m surprised by the length of the sentence,” Rizzuti’s attorney, Michael K. Spotts, Stuart, said in a telephone interview. “The judge sentenced Mr. Rizzuti to the guideline range.” Federal judges aren’t required to and often don’t explain why they’ve selected longer or shorter sentencing times formulated by the United States Sentencing Commission. Spotts said Graham — appointed by George H.W. Bush in 1991 — didn’t in Rizutti’s case. “Generally speaking, his sentence range should have been in the 36-month range,” Spotts said. “I think the difference here had a lot to do with no restitution paid

admitted to engaging in a conspiracy to commit wire fraud by convincing people throughout the United States Joseph Rizzuti they were investing in Nigerian oil and Bahamian construction projects. It estimates that Rizzuti and co-conspirators stole about $3 million from those unnumbered victims. “The case is ongoing, which means there are other unindicted people that the government is pursuing,” Spotts said. He added, “This is an ongoing case and Mr. Rizzuti is cooperating in that investigation.” The IRS Criminal Investigation unit handled 5,125 and completed 4,937 cases in fiscal 2012,

at the time of sentencing.” A grand jury returned an indictment against Rizzuti in November. The Department of Justice unsealed the indictment in December. It contained one count of corruptly endeavoring to obstruct the IRS and four counts of wire fraud. According to the indictment, Rizzuti, owner of Beacon Accounting Service, “interfered with the IRS’s ability to collect taxes owed by two clients, stole payments from those clients intended for the IRS, and made misrepresentations to those clients and to the IRS.” The justice department claimed Rizzuti stole about $265,000 from one client and $23,500 from another. The department said the clients gave him the money to pay the IRS. The maximum penalty Rizzuti faced was 20 years for each count of wire fraud and three for the obstruction count. In addition to the prison time, Rizzuti will serve three years of supervised release and pay $289,000 in restitution to the IRS. He could get additional penalties in the next couple months. AC from page 1 veteran. He gave what he gave. He could have given all.” In their story is a lesson for others, however. Sharkey, owner of Sharkey Air in Stuart, said there’re a lot of air conditioners that are simply too small for the jobs asked of them. But there’s such a thing as too big, and that was Miller’s problem. “If you have a unit that’s too big, it will run too quickly,” Sharkey said. “Once the temperature is satisfied, it’ll shut off regardless of the humidity in the house. Think of it as two horses pulling a cart; the reduction of temperature and humidity have to be at the same time. In order to do that, the equipment has to be sized correctly to the load.” OK, time to back up and explain what happened. Was a time in America when newspapers were widely seen as the homes of heroes. There’s a reason why Superman’s alter ego, Clark Kent, was a reporter when he made his first appearance in Action Comics, 1938. In today’s world, Kent would probably be a firefighter/EMT. Reporters and the newspapers they worked for were once respected. They were seen as tough, bold. They got things done, made things change. That’s disappeared over time, and probably for some good reasons. Still, when Miller was having problems with a new air conditioner he bought in 2010, he turned to Your Voice News & Views’ sister publication, Veteran Voice, to help him get a resolution. “From the beginning we had a problem that it would not cool

Among other problems, Miller’s wife, Pam, had medical conditions that were worsened by the humidity lingering in the home. Miller had local air conditioning companies putting bandages after bandages on the problem. None were working. the house proportionately,” Miller said. “It would be cool one side of the house and not the other.” Among other problems, Miller’s wife, Pam, had medical conditions that were worsened by the humidity lingering in the home. Miller had local air conditioning companies putting bandages after bandages on the problem. None were working. “I wrote a letter,” Miller said. “I wrote a letter to the CEO. I also sent one to the president. I never heard a word.” He wrote more letters. Nothing. There’s a mathematical theory called “Six degrees of separation.” It holds that no two people on the planet are more than six mutual acquaintances apart from each other. This theory is often applied to resolving problems. Miller encountered Your Voice and Veteran Voice editor Tammy Raits at the 36th annual Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum & TICO AirShow in March. “I explained (everything) to her, and she said, ‘Send me the letters,’” Miller said. “She said, ‘I think I know a guy who can help us.’” That was Sharkey. “Tammy (Raits) contacted me and told me she had a veteran who was having problems with

Photo illustration by Eric Macon/graphic designer his air conditioner,” Sharkey said. “It was a considerable distance from my coverage area.” It turned out that Sharkey had recently returned from an Air Conditioner Contractors of America convention where he’d met the people who could fix Miller’s problem. He just didn’t know that until … “I called (Miller) up, and he told me the history of the system and the size of his house,” Sharkey said. “It appeared just by looking at the front page that the system was too big and would never work right.” Sharkey called his newfound contacts. That’s when things started changing for Miller. “Not two weeks later I got a call from the resolution department,” he said. The company recognized that one of its dealers had sold Miller

a five-ton unit for a house needing a four-ton, and replaced it free of charge. “We’re in better shape than we were,” Miller said. “The humidity seems better.” He credits Veteran Voice. “The Veteran Voice is something more than just to read,” he said. “It’s got some power.” Well, in his case, the “power” was probably in two degrees of separation from a person who could fix his problem. One was an air-conditioner contractor who’s been in the business since 1989 and made a lot of acquaintances. But sometimes newspapers still do what the First Amendment was crafted for and live up in their small ways to the sacrifices of service members who died protecting it. takes one.” Debra McCaughey, Martin County’s director of emergency management, said that whether the predictions are for busy or slow, Floridians must take all hurricane seasons seriously. “It only takes one (hurricane) to hit us,” she said. “Remember Andrew? That was a very inactive hurricane season.” Hurricane Andrew struck Florida in August, 1992. It was only the fourth cyclone that dull year, and the first named. That dull hurricane season got exciting fast. Andrew was, at the time, the costliest storm to ever hit the United States. The storm did almost $27 billion in damage in the U.S. alone. Katrina took the title from Andrew in 2005, causing more than $100 billion in damage. Florida had 44 fatalities associated with Andrew. Of those, 15 were directly attributed to the

ing to go to a friend’s house? Are you going to go to a shelter?” With those decisions in place, Dryburgh said families can tailor emergency-kit purchases accordingly. Forecasters from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predict a busier than average season, with 18 named storms and nine hurricanes, four of them major. Major hurricanes are defined as Category 3 or above. “They’re saying well above average season, very busy,” local meteorologist Steve Weagle said. “(That) doesn’t mean something’s going to hit us, but it looks like it’s going to be very busy out there.” That’s become something of a theme recently. “Keep in mind, it was very busy last year,” Weagle said in an earlier interview. “It was tied for the third busiest, but we really didn’t see anything here at all. It only

HURRICANE from page 6 storm, and another 29 to conditions created by the storm’s aftermath. In general more people die after hurricanes then during them. There’re a few reasons for that. Post-hurricane deaths often happen when people head out too soon after storms in search of supplies they could have gotten beforehand. They encounter down power lines, hazardous road debris, and other life threatening obstacles. Another frequent cause of post-storm fatalities is well-meaning people without training attempting to check on and assist neighbors. Martin County will soon have a class for its Community Emergency Response Team, a volunteer emergency-response assistance program. CERT members are civilians trained to assist emergency responders in crisis. “I have it scheduled for July 20th and 21st,” Dryburgh said. “Space is limited.” She said up to 18 can attend.

“Right now, I already have 10,” she said. Dryburgh said that there are about 60 people in Martin County with the program’s training. She’d like to see that increase to the hundreds. About a dozen regularly show for CERT’s monthly meetings. They’re on the last Thursday of every month, unless interrupted by holidays, The meetings are at 6 p.m. at 800 S.E. Monterey Road, Stuart. They’re on the second floor. Dryburgh said residents are welcome to attend the meetings before they’ve gotten classes. Dryburgh and other emergency planners say disaster survival kits should have enough supplies for at least three to seven days. They should have water, nonperishable food, batteries, flashlights, battery-operated radios, household unscented bleach to purify drinking water, manual can openers, disposable eating utensils, fire extinguishers, first-aid kits, gas grills for outdoor use, matches and lighters, along with copies of important documents. Families with infants should also

stock up on formula, diapers and wipes, which become a rare commodity during and in the days following a crisis. People with disabilities and special needs should consult with their healthcare providers about any special provisions they should make. For example, all prescription medication should be filled before a storm. Residents who cannot evacuate the area, and fear their homes can’t withstand a storm, should ready themselves to go to county-operated shelters, but remember to brace for an uncomfortable experience. Those planning on going to shelters must also ready emergency kits. “You don’t have to run out and buy everything all at once,” Dryburgh said. “One week you can buy these two things, next week a couple other things.” She urged people to visit floridadisaster.org for emergency-kit preparation. To learn more about the CERT classes, call (772) 2871652, Ext. 1, or email ema@martin.fl.us.

and criminal enterprises and it’s important when going into any new venture to have sound financial and legal advice. “In general, there is oftentimes a very fine line between what is general business practices that are legal and those that cross

the line and become criminal,” he said. “It’s surprises me and amazes me sometimes that people won’t spend a little bit of money to get advice beforehand, and they go to a lawyer later and have problems that could have been avoided.”

“Kindertransport,” published in 1992. “We need to put ourselves in other people’s shoes, basically,” Drucker said. “You know, we’re all people. We all have the same feelings and the rest of it. We’re all humanity.” At age 11, Drucker bid farewell to her parents and older brother, thinking the separation wouldn’t last long. After six years of living with different families in Great Britain, Drucker was finally reunited with her family in New York in 1945. Her father managed to survive a concentration camp, she said. “I don’t remember it being at all painful to me, because they said we’ll all be together again soon. And of course none of us knew it was going to take six years,” the mother of three and grandmother of two said about the goodbye. “I’m sure for my parents, it must have been much harder for them because they knew the danger that was lurking.” Drucker said she decided to pen her story and gear the book toward middle school students in order to reach children during a pivotal moment in their growth. During her presentation, Drucker encouraged tolerance of all races and religions, saying, “Hatred is carefully taught. You weren’t born that way.” According to the U.K.-based Association of Jewish Refugees’ website, only 1,500 survivors of the Kindertransport remain. On June 24, Drucker will join several hundred of the mission’s survivors at St. James’s Palace in London to

commemorate the 75th year of the transport. Prince Charles of Wales is hosting the event. Drucker, who has toured hundreds of schools, said the life-altering event helped mold her into the person she is today. “I think maybe I am more flexible and more understanding, I hope,” she said. Palm Pointe world history teacher Amanda Shaffer spends three state-mandated weeks teaching students about the Holocaust. Shaffer said she wishes the lesson would come earlier in the school year. “Even though this lesson comes at the end of my school year, I always see gentler, kinder children at the end of the year,” she said. Judith Darville, 12, a sixth-grader at the school, said she was honored to meet Drucker. Judith said she learned to be more accepting of others after reading and listening to Drucker’s story. “You’re never ever supposed to be mean to someone because they’re different,” Judith said. Fellow sixth-grade student Victoria Vollman, 12, said Drucker’s message hit home. “A lot of my family was killed in Germany during the Holocaust because they were Jewish,” Victoria said. Victoria, who plans to teach future generations in her family about the Holocaust, said she can never rationalize the evil of Adolf Hitler. “I don’t really know why he did what he did, but I think that having somebody go to that extreme for the hatred of somebody is terrible,” she said.

WORKFORCE from page 4 Workforce Solution’s budget was slightly more than $7 million. That swelled to $12.6 the next fiscal year, mostly because of funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. By the 2011-2012 fiscal year, the budget dropped to about $7.75 million. In 2011-2012, about 11,160 individuals registered for job-seeking services at Workforce Solutions. About 44,860 received services, many registered before the start of the fiscal year. From July of last year to June 10, slightly more than 10,100 registered, and 43,516 have received services. Things are getting better on the Florida jobs front, but St. Lucie County is still suffering one of the state’s highest unemployment rates. Martin’s unemployment rate is below the statewide average, but still comes in as the 29th highest out of 67 counties. The two counties make up the Port St. Lucie Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is hovering over the state and national unemployment averages. According to the monthly jobs report the Department of Economic Opportunity released last month, Florida’s unemployment rate was at 7.2 percent in April, the lowest it’s been since September 2008. The state’s unemployment rate has declined in year-over-year

comparisons for 30 months. The state’s unemployment rate was down 0.3 percentage points from March, and 1.7 from the year before. The national average for April was 7.5 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. St. Lucie had the state’s fourth highest unemployment rate in April, 8.9 percent. It didn’t move from the month before, but was down from 10.7 percent in April 2012. Martin’s unemployment rate in April was 6.7 percent, down from 6.9 in March. In April 2012, Martin was at 8.1 percent unemployment. The Port St. Lucie MSA came in with an 8.2 percent unemployment rate for April, down from 8.3 in March. In April 2012, it was at 9.8 percent unemployment. Victorio said some job seekers are likely turning to technology rather than going to One-Stop Career Centers. “They may be using the Internet at home, and not coming in,” she said. “That doesn’t mean they’re not using the services. It doesn’t necessarily mean they’ve found jobs. They might just be more comfortable using services from home.” At press time, Victorio didn’t have the current fiscal year’s budget information, or projections for the next fiscal year.

PALM CITY — It’s an idea lab whose time has come. While the branches of the Martin County Library System offer computer instruction, only the Cummings Library in Palm City has the idea lab. The lab, which opened in 2012, offers people of all ages the latest in digital technology. It is equipped with iMacs, iPads, iPods, digital cameras and scanners and popular software including iMovie, iPhoto and GarageBand.

For many, using this technology is a challenge. Shelby Baillie, 15, a student at Jensen Beach High School, is a volunteer in the idea lab. In a phone interview with Shelby and her mother, Peg, she talked about volunteering and about her own winning entry in the Collaborative Summer Library Programs 2013 Video Challenge for the state of Florida. “The idea lab gives people the opportunity to deal with technology,” Shelby said. “It helps with new technology that they haven’t experienced before. Gov. appoints new chairman of Early Learning Coalition FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

MARTIN COUNTY — The Early Learning Coalition of Indian River, Martin and Okeechobee counties is pleased to announce the appointment of Brandon Tucker as the chairman of its board of directors. The ELC plans and implements school readiness and voluntary pre-kindergarten services to meet the early education and child care needs in the three-county area. Tucker was appointed by Governor Rick Scott to serve as chairman for a four-

year term. “The most critical time to make a positive impact in the lives of children is from birth to age 8. Serving as chair of the Early Learning Coalition is an honor and an important responsibility,” Tucker said. “I’m honored to be in this leadership role and oversee the decision making process for an organization that provides such a critical service to young children in our communities.” As the former chairman of the board of directors for the YMCA of the Treasure Coast, Tucker has

past experience leading an organization that develops programs to assist local youth. “It will be a huge benefit to have a chair that is so deepBrandon Tucker ly connected to our cause,” said Early Learning Coalition executive director Jacki Jackson. “Brandon’s energy and enthusiasm will help push our organization forward.”

Tucker is president of The Tucker Group, LLC, an agricultural and commercial-focused real estate firm that operates throughout the Treasure Coast, as well as Central and South Florida. Tucker graduated from the Florida State University with a degree in real estate and finance. Tucker also currently serves as a board member on several civic and nonprofit organizations including the Palm City Chamber

for anybody from 5-90. It doesn’t matter. They can bring their own (devices) and if they don’t know how to use them, we can help.” Shelby volunteers at the Cummings every Wednesday. She became so skilled with lots of practice. “We got her a new iMac when she was 6 years old,” her mother said. “She took off.” Shelby hopes to study art, advertising and computer animation, so entering the video competition was a natural step. The Teen Video Challenge, in its third year, is a national competition designed to get teens involved with the library’s summer reading program. This year’s theme was “Beneath the Surface.” “You can do it in pairs, individually or in groups,” Shelby said. “I chose to do it by myself. I wanted to show that books have feelings and themes. I wanted to show them come alive. Libraries are fun and lively places.” For her entry, Shelby mixed animation with library backgrounds. Characters such as Katniss from “The Hunger Games,” dinosaurs from “Dinotopia,” a floating eyeball with wings, a dragon, a frog and a unicorn all come to life and spread the message about how much libraries have to offer. Her proud mother wants people to know that the 90-second video took hours to produce. “Shelby literally worked on it for 57 hours,” Peg Baillie said. “She does 600 frames. It’s hours and hours and hours. I don’t think people realize it.” Shelby submitted her entry on YouTube, as was required by the competition, and also submitted a CD. She was in class in April when word came that she had won. “I was in school and my mom called my digital design teacher, Dr. Maltran,” Shelby said. “She knew he’d let me speak to her. The first thing out of my mouth

was ‘Where’s the money?’ I was very excited. We were doing a lesson and it was sweet. I wanted to scream.” Shelby received a $275 prize for her winning entry. She was going to spend it, but decided to put it in the bank to save for art supplies. “I really want to become something in the art field,” she said. “Art is what I really love. I love anything to do with art.” Although she is only entering her sophomore year, her parents have taken her to tour the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota. “Shelby would love to go there,” her mother said. “She’s been working on her portfolio since she was 12 and won several awards.” When Shelby isn’t volunteering at the Cummings Library, she volunteers at the Blake Library and Children’s Museum. She works with kids at both places. They have an easier time with technology, she said. “I feel like older people have more trouble. Kids pick it up. It’s really good to teach older ones. They say, ‘Thank you so much, I didn’t know how to turn it on.’ Then they go out and buy their own.” She hopes more people will come to the idea lab. “The Cummings Library is a great library,” she said. “I don’t think a lot of people know about it, but it’s a really great library. All the ones in Martin County are great and the people are wonderful and down-to-earth. It’s a great atmosphere.” Shelby will be attending camp in June, but she’ll be back at the idea lab come fall. If you need a hand with the latest and greatest technology, pay her a visit at the Cummings Library’s idea lab. She’ll be happy to help. The idea lab is located in the Cummings Library, 2551 S.W. Alyssa and Anthony Golino are conducting their third annual Peanut Butter & Jelly Drive to benefit the House of Hope food pantries. The two young volunteers have a goal to collect 2,000 pounds of peanut butter and jelly from June 1-Aug. 31. If they meet that goal, it would double the amount they collected during the drive last August, when they raised 1,000 pounds of peanut butter and jelly. Alyssa, 12, and Anthony, 14, are encouraging people to give or businesses to collect PB&J. They also coordinated with House of Hope to set up a way for people to give money to support the drive, online at www.hohmartin. org/pbj. Peanut butter is a popular item for food pantries because it is nutrient-rich, has a long shelf life, and doesn’t require cooking or refrigeration. House of Hope’s food pantries in Stuart, Hobe Sound, Indiantown and Jensen Beach are the largest providers of food to Martin County residents in need. Last year, the agency gave out 191 tons of food — the equivalent of about 299,000 meals. Food items include canned vegetables, fruit, tomato products, soup, rice, pasta, cereal, fresh produce, meat, bread and, of course, peanut butter and jelly. House of Hope also helps Martin County residents in need by offering clothing, furniture, financial assistance and case management services. For more information about the PB&J drive, contact Gina Golino, (772) 221-1660 or gina@fwdelectric-air.com. For more information about House of Hope, call (772) 2864673 or visit www.hohmartin. org.

GUNS from page 3 And they look for American flags displayed at homes. “Which means you might have a firearm,” Christofek Weiss said in a separate earlier interview. According to some law-enforcement sources, guns are a high-value item for professional criminals. They fetch comparatively good prices compared to other items, such as electronics. Christofek said she was unsure how many firearms the pillowcase burglars have stolen in Martin. She’s also unsure if there’s evidence that they’re keeping the firearms, passing them to other criminals or selling the weapons to otherwise lawful gun owners who’re unaware that they’re stolen. Currie isn’t suspected in any of the 92 pillowcase burglaries the Martin County Sheriff’s Office believes have happened since 2011. It has made 33 arrests of individuals thought to be part of the pillowcase-burglary schemes. Among the guns Currie is believed to have stolen and sold are a Kimber 1911, two 9 mm handguns, a Ruger .357, and a

Glock 30. All were recovered. Dawn Currie, Renant’s mother, declined to comment on the record about the case during a phone conversation. The school issued a press release, but didn’t respond to a telephoned request for additional comments. “The administration and Community Christian Academy School Board worked with the Sheriff’s Office to isolate the individuals who were believed to be at the center of this activity and remove them from the campus while conducting their investigation,” the school wrote in the release. “It has always been and will continue to be the policy of Community Christian Academy to cooperate fully with the Martin County Sheriff’s Office in any legal matters involving the school or the students.” The Sheriff’s Office redacted the theft victim’s name in arrest reports given to Your Voice News & Views. The Sheriff’s Office charged the other youths, all from Stuart, with a variety of felonies related to the alleged illegal gun sales.

STUART — Had the great recession not struck in 2008, one of the county’s greatest gems may have ceased to exist -- and what a loss it would have been for the tummy and taste buds. Terry Rieger, owner of Diamonds by Terry, said her tea room and bistro, which is connected to her

high-end jewelry store stocked full of thousands of custom pieces, was born after the economy began to take a turn for the worst. “To be perfectly honest, when the economy five years ago just tanked, the people that were hurt were my clients, who were over 50 and affluent,” Terry said. “I had some clients that were

friends with Bernie Madoff. They lost a lot there. Many of them lost their fortunes in the market. At least half, some of them more than half. And so my business didn’t slow down, it ceased to exist.” As did many business owners, Terry had to think on her feet to survive. “I needed to make a decision to retire or I had to market quickly and in a different way for a different client that I never did before,” Terry said. The rest is history. For the past four years, the Renaissance woman, who said cooking was her love before jewelry, has worked six days a week, 300 days a year designing jewelry and cooking her own recipes. The menu, which changes daily, includes a slew of delectable dishes, all made from scratch. “Every morning when we come in, I make the Tuscany bread with the fresh tomatoes, the five cheeses and my secret spices and I make the soups,” Terry said. “Everything else is made when you order it.” A highly recommended starter is Terry’s butternut squash soup. Served at just the right temperature, the bowl boasts the perfect combination of spices and fresh squash. And in Terry’s kitchen,

The innovative Italian opted to serve the dish with capers, artichokes, tomatoes and spices over top a bed of garden rice with peas, small carrots and corn. Another dish that cannot go overlooked is Terry’s chicken pot pie with a flaky crust that never goes mushy. “When the kids were little, they never ate the bottom crust, you know, because it always gets soggy and I hate that,” said Terry, a mother of two adult children. “So we don’t put a bottom crust on, we only put a top crust.” A great seafood dish is the Boston lobster cakes made from fresh lobster shipped from Trenton, Maine. The cakes are crisped to perfection and contain a mix of sweet lobster and Terry’s “secret spices.” The culinary perfectionist said she only serves up the best. “I’m a real stickler about what I feed everybody. I’m Italian,” Terry smiled. Terry’s bistro, which seats 50, also offers authentic English High Tea in a setting that is reminiscent of old British opulence. The eclectic room contains a collection of different antique china and silverware. A recurring dec-

orative theme is the ladybug, for a very sentimental reason, Terry said. Years ago, one of Terry’s clients was diagnosed with cancer and was subsequently hospitalized. While in his room, a ladybug landed on his tray. He asked for another cancer screening, which came back negative, Terry explained. “Ladybugs are good luck,” said Terry, who began designing her client ladybug jewelry. Seven year later, during an especially cold winter in Tennessee, Terry received a call from that

same client’s wife informing her that he had died. “I swear to God, my daughterin-law will tell you to this day, at that moment, a ladybug landed on the window,” said Terry, who always wears a ladybug pin. Palm City resident Linda Morrell said dining at Terry’s is an exciting experience. “It’s not only the food, but the atmosphere and the love that she puts into all of the dishes,” Morrell said. “It’s just exceptional.” For more information on Diamonds by Terry and her unique tea room and bistro, visit www. diamondsbyterry.com or call (772) 781-1133 to make a reservation.
