‘Must be something in the water’ Four valedictorians all hail from Crane Creek Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

PALM CITY — There may be something in the water at Crane Creek. The co-valedictorians from South Fork High School, as well as the valedictorians from Martin County and Jensen Beach High Schools all come from that community. The four: Lauren Maunus and Olivia Ranieri of South Fork, Evan Farrara of Jensen Beach and Miranda Korniloff of Martin County gathered in front of the Crane Creek sign for a group photo and each spoke about plans for the future. Lauren Maunus will attend Brown University in the fall. The daughter of Howard and Debbie Maunus, she hopes to go into diplomacy, working at the United Nations or State Department. “I’d really enjoy negotiations for human rights or treaties that focus on human rights,” she said. “I hope to pursue international law, perhaps at Georgetown or maybe abroad.” Maunus has been involved with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, a group trying to get better working conditions for farm workers. The group has been trying to get Publix and Wendy’s to sign on to the Fair Food program, an agreement between corporations and farmers that says that the corporations would only buy tomatoes from growers where workers have good working conditions. “It’s been a little slow, locally,” Maunus said. “The group on the Treasure Coast is mostly retirees who travel north.”

Ranieri and Maunus were co-valedictorians at South Fork High School, Farrara was valedictorian at Jensen Beach High School and Korniloff was valedictorian at Martin County High School. She hopes to continue the work at Brown, where the Fair Food movement has a chapter. This summer, Maunus will spend the summer traveling. “I’m extremely privileged and excited to sped three weeks in Italy (with my family,”) she said. “Then I’m going to Korea with my friend. She was my roommate in a summer program on Global Politics and Human Rights. She moved here from Korea when she was 6 and I’m going with her and her family. It will be an amazing cultural experience.” Olivia Ranieri is the co-vale-

dictorian at South Fork. She said that it is fitting as she and Maunus have been friends since they were infants. Ranieri will attend The George Washington University Honors Program in Washington, D.C. She will major in organizational sciences, which includes psychology, statistics, management and finance. “I hope to work with a nonprofit in human rights,” she said. “I’m eventually hoping to be involved in the management of a nonprofit.” Ranieri has also been involved with the Coalition of Immoka-

lee Farmworkers and plans to continue her activism in college, where there is a Fair Food movement. In addition, she is involved in campaigns targeting violence against women and girls. Ranieri noticed an irony in the Crane Creek connection. “The funny thing is that Evan is my next-door neighbor,” she said. “We’re both going to D.C. schools and we’ll be neighbors forever.” Ranieri is the daughter of Rob and Stacy Ranieri. This summer,
