‘Must be something in the water’ Four valedictorians all hail from Crane Creek Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
PALM CITY — There may be something in the water at Crane Creek. The co-valedictorians from South Fork High School, as well as the valedictorians from Martin County and Jensen Beach High Schools all come from that community. The four: Lauren Maunus and Olivia Ranieri of South Fork, Evan Farrara of Jensen Beach and Miranda Korniloff of Martin County gathered in front of the Crane Creek sign for a group photo and each spoke about plans for the future. Lauren Maunus will attend Brown University in the fall. The daughter of Howard and Debbie Maunus, she hopes to go into diplomacy, working at the United Nations or State Department. “I’d really enjoy negotiations for human rights or treaties that focus on human rights,” she said. “I hope to pursue international law, perhaps at Georgetown or maybe abroad.” Maunus has been involved with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, a group trying to get better working conditions for farm workers. The group has been trying to get Publix and Wendy’s to sign on to the Fair Food program, an agreement between corporations and farmers that says that the corporations would only buy tomatoes from growers where workers have good working conditions. “It’s been a little slow, locally,” Maunus said. “The group on the Treasure Coast is mostly retirees who travel north.”

Ranieri and Maunus were co-valedictorians at South Fork High School, Farrara was valedictorian at Jensen Beach High School and Korniloff was valedictorian at Martin County High School. She hopes to continue the work at Brown, where the Fair Food movement has a chapter. This summer, Maunus will spend the summer traveling. “I’m extremely privileged and excited to sped three weeks in Italy (with my family,”) she said. “Then I’m going to Korea with my friend. She was my roommate in a summer program on Global Politics and Human Rights. She moved here from Korea when she was 6 and I’m going with her and her family. It will be an amazing cultural experience.” Olivia Ranieri is the co-vale-
dictorian at South Fork. She said that it is fitting as she and Maunus have been friends since they were infants. Ranieri will attend The George Washington University Honors Program in Washington, D.C. She will major in organizational sciences, which includes psychology, statistics, management and finance. “I hope to work with a nonprofit in human rights,” she said. “I’m eventually hoping to be involved in the management of a nonprofit.” Ranieri has also been involved with the Coalition of Immoka-
lee Farmworkers and plans to continue her activism in college, where there is a Fair Food movement. In addition, she is involved in campaigns targeting violence against women and girls. Ranieri noticed an irony in the Crane Creek connection. “The funny thing is that Evan is my next-door neighbor,” she said. “We’re both going to D.C. schools and we’ll be neighbors forever.” Ranieri is the daughter of Rob and Stacy Ranieri. This summer,

she plans to intern at her mother’s public relations business, The Firefly Group, working with nonprofits. Evan Farrara attended Jensen Beach High School in the last class open to students from Palm City. He chose it for the engineering program, but discovered he didn’t care for engineering. He loved the school and he remained. Farrara plans to attend Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., with a focus on law and economics. This summer, he is relaxing before heading off to school. “I haven’t taken a summer off for four years,” he said. “My parents are encouraging me to slow down before I go off to college.” Farrara is a car enthusiast who attends auto shows, and a volunteer with Kiwanis. He also is a coin collector, inspired by his dad, who used to bring home old coins. Farrara is the son of Beth and Mark Farrara. The family moved to Palm City from New York in 2004, just before the hurricanes. Miranda Korniloff, the Martin County High School valedictorian, will attend the University of Florida. She plans to study international business or marketing. She was vice president of Interact, a service group sponsored

Photo courtesy of Olivia Ranieri by Rotary that worked on volunteer projects internationally and locally. She was a varsity football cheerleader and a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society. Korniloff’s college decision was made, in part, by her love for the outdoors. “I like to fish and be outside, go to the beach and go out in the boat,” she said. “I’m a Florida girl. I didn’t want to leave Florida.” Her interest in international
business stems from her father, Nicholas Korniloff, who owns businesses that specialize in international fine arts fairs. “I’ve grown up working in them, seeing how they’re produced,” she said. “I’m creative in fashion and design. I want to incorporate these aspects or art and fashion in the business world.” This summer, Korniloff will be in Gainesville, taking courses in business and humanities and acclimating herself to the huge UF
campus. Korniloff is also the daughter of Tiffany Korniloff. There you have the four valedictorians, all exceptional young people ready to take on the world. There really must be something in the water. Writer’s note: I am grateful to Debbie Maunus for bringing this story to my attention. She also mentioned the ‘something in the water’ slant to the story and I shamelessly stole it.

Reprinted with permission from Out2news. MARTIN COUNTY — As you know under normal circumstances I don’t write stories myself. Out2 is a citizen journal and that usually does not include me. However, this story is different. I want to talk about a “gem” of a lady, pardon the pun. The other day I was visiting Diamonds By Terry and Tea Room and Bistro, owned and operated by Terry Rieger. I mentioned to Terry that the Aaron Vaughn, “Operation 300” Frogman Swim and dinner was coming up at the end of the month. The event raises money for Operation 300, an organization started in memory of Vaughn, which holds children’s mentoring camps several times a year. This event is an open water swim (fixed buoy course) honors one of America’s finest. Vaughn, a member of DEVGRU (SEAL Team VI), was killed in action on Aug. 6, 2011, when a Chinook helicopter crashed in the Tangi River Valley of Afghanistan. All 30 American warriors on board lost their lives that day. This crash represented the single largest loss of life in Naval Special Warfare history. In that one incident, 40 children
were left without fathers, including Vaughn’s two young children: a son named Reagan, who was 2 at the time of his father’s death, and a newborn daughter, Chamberlyn, who was only 2 months old. Operation 300 came out of the question of who was going to teach Aaron’s children the things Aaron would have taught them. The name “Operation 300” was inspired by Aaron’s first tattoo Molon Labe. The ancient Greek phrase was spoken by King Leonidas I as his Greek Army of 300 was surrounded by the 600,000plus invading Persian Army, led by Persian Emperor Xerxes I. The Persians demanded the Spartans lay down their arms, and, Leonidas responded to Xerxes with the phrase “Molon Labe,” which means “come and get them.” It is not only a phrase of defiance, but it is also a phrase that symbolizes the ability of the human spirit to overcome insurmountable odds. The Frogman Swim and dinner will be a family-fun day. Events will be planned throughout the morning to entertain your children, including a 50-yard Tadpole Swim, so be sure to bring
Jeweler and philanthropist Terry Rieger. them along! Course information: • Participants will swim 50 m out to 1K buoy course (450 m in length, 50 m in depth). 1K swimmers will make 1 lap. 5K swimmers will make 5. The swim will move counter clockwise. • Course subject to slight changes based on environmental conditions of the day. • 200 yard swimmers will swim out 50 yards, swim along shore 100 yards, then back in 50 yards.

There will be kayak and jet ski or boat support on site as well. Terry already gives much of her time and talent to over 40 charities on the Treasure Coast and I asked if she might be interested in donating a little something to this event. She asked what they might want, and I said that an item for their silent auction always works. The theme is the Frogman Swim at Jensen Beach on June 27, why not a frog? Instantly you could see the wheels of creativity going right to work. Terry has a, let’s say interesting backyard, which includes a hot

Later that evening, low and behold, as she was enjoying her visit to her sanctuary, a little wildlife friend arrived on scene. It was one of those little green tree frogs you might have seen from time to time that hang on your glass door or wall of your house. Again, those wheels of creativity went to work. MARTIN COUNTY — On Saturday morning, a few hundred swimmers will plunge into the Atlantic and paddle up to 5 kilometers. It’s time for the annual Aaron Vaughn Memorial Frogman Swim. “We had nearly 300 (swimmers) last year,” Billy Vaughn said. Billy is Aaron Vaughn’s father. The number 300 is highly symbolic. The swim supports a charity the Vaughn family started after Navy SEAL Aaron Vaughn was killed in Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan. American Legion Post 399 in Palm City is named for Aaron Vaughn. The charity is Operation 300. The organization holds mentoring camps for children of fallen service members four times a year. “The kids come in and do things they’d (have) done with their dads,” Billy said. Things like fishing, swimming, shooting. Billy said the camp — which charges attendees nothing
— hosts about 100 children a year. It’s done on temporarily-donated land just south of Stuart. Operation 300 is likely to expand to five camps a year and is looking for property. “We’re having growing pains, but that’s a good thing,” Billy said. Aaron was among 17 SEALs who died in the August 2011 insurgent shooting of a Chinook helicopter. In all, 38 died in the shooting, including five members of the Navy Special Warfare support personnel, three Army Rangers, two members of the Colorado National Guard, two members of the Air Force Pararescue, and an Air Force combat controller. Additionally, seven members of the Afghan National Army and an interpreter died, as did a military working dog. Billy said four years on the family still struggles with the loss of Aaron and his comrades. “My wife and I talk about it all the time,” he said. “It stays with you.” Aaron was married to Kimberly Vaughn. They had two young children. “In the months that followed, his
wife, one of her biggest concerns was who would teach them what her dad taught her,” Billy said. “My daughter came up with the idea to start a camp for little boys and little girls who lost their dads in the military.” The name Operation 300 is from one of Aaron’s favorite stories — the Battle of Themopylae. In 480 BCE, King Leonidas of Sparta was part of a vastly outnumbered group of Greeks who defended a
narrow coastal pass against an invasion by the Persians under King Xerxes I. After two days of intense but hopeless fighting, the Greeks left a suicide force of about 1,500 to hold Themopylae, the Hot Gates, long enough for other forces to gather against the Persians, the most famous of the suicide force being 300 Spartans. Legend holds that when the

Persians demanded the Greeks’ weapons in surrender, Leonidas shouted, “Molon labe!” “Come and take them!” Local triathlete and Army veteran Jerry Kyckelhahn has done the annual swim. He said organizers do a great job. “The swim is an excellent swim for a good and patriotic cause,” he said. “It is well attended and safe.” Kyckelhahn said the event attracts a wide range of swimmers
and is a great place for them to meet up to find new partners or mentors. “It’s a complete mix of skill levels,” he said. “It’s a great, great, great bunch of people.” Billy said registration for the swim starts at 7:30 a.m., and last minute attendees are welcomed. The swim launches at 9 a.m. Additionally, he said spectators are encouraged. “We want as many spectators as we can out there,” Billy said. “We have lots of things for kids to do, and we have vendors.” And live
music. The annual swim, which is the last Saturday of June, honors a fallen service member each year. “This year, we’ll be honoring Aaron’s best friend, Brad Cavner.” Cavner was killed last June in a parachuting accident. The swim will be held at the beach at Jensen Beach Park is at 4191 N.E. Ocean Blvd., on Hutchinson Island. More about Operation 300 is at www.operation300.com.

TREASURE COAST — Michael Durham, Martin’s county attorney, said local legal challenges against All Aboard Florida are on track despite what may look like a derailment to some. “The case isn’t lost,” he said. “It’s the preliminary injunction wasn’t granted on that case.” On June 10, U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper denied Martin’s request for a preliminary injunction against the Department of Transportation’s allocation of private activity bonds for All Aboard Florida, the controversial proposed high-speed rail expected to run passengers between Orlan-
do and Miami through the Treasure Coast. “The judge said we stumbled the attempt at the show harm,” Durham said. “We’re still on our feet.” Rusty Roberts, vice president of government affairs, said it’s All Aboard Florida’s policy not to comment on litigation. The county’s suit isn’t against the company, but the federal government. The Martin County Commission filed suit on April 27. It tapped a $1.4 million opposition fund it created to file the suit against the U.S. Department of Transportation challenging the private activity bonds it OK’d late last year for All Aboard Florida to raise capital.

TREASURE COAST — Jim Docter knew he wanted to be singer from an early age. “I wanted to be a singer in high school,” he said. “I went to a teacher and she discouraged me. I convinced her to take me as a student.” The St. Louis native attended college in his hometown and began as a business and psychology major. Two years in, he and three friends auditioned for Six Flags Mid-America. The teacher thought the friends had a good chance. “I thought it would be a good experience for me,” Docter said. “I’m the only one who got in. I was one of six guys out of 1,200.” In college, he had become involved in music and theater and was offered a voice scholarship. He added music to his major. “I don’t know why I wanted to be a singer,” he said “I just wanted to sing. I’m the only singer in my family.” During his senior year in college, Docter saw a flier for auditions for dinner theater in Florida. “I had done summer stock and I walked in the room and auditioned,” he said. “I got a letter and phone call with a contract to come to Florida.” Docter came to Florida right after graduation. He worked in the company’s dinner theaters in Orlando, West Palm Beach, Miami Beach and Cocoa Beach for 2 ½ years. “I decided I didn’t want to do it for a living,” he said. “As soon as you get a job, you worry about the next job.” Docter started his own musical theater production company in the 1980s. The company was the first to use a musical track, rather than live music. His company worked in theater in the U.S. and England and also provided entertainment for cruise lines. When Docter sold the business to his partner, he started working
Jim Docter at psychiatric hospitals. “I started off in marketing and ended up running the Challenge Course program. I took over the Ropes program and ran it for eight years.” That program encourages participants in team-building and overcoming obstacles. Docter came to Palm City 20 years ago and directed productions at the Barn and Lyric Theatres. Then he got a job offer to develop leadership training materials and employee development programs. “I found my niche,” he said. “I love it. It requires business knowledge, psychology and working with people to keep them involved. It fits so many things I like to do. I’m kind of a research junkie.” These days, Docter spends time directing. “It’s my passion,” he said “I found I enjoyed being behind the stage more, and working with people to help them reach their potential.” Docter directed musicals for the Vero Beach Theatre Guild and after several years, he wanted a change of pace. “Musical revues are the best of both worlds,” he said. “You work with musicians and singers and help them develop creatively. I presented the concert idea to the Barn, where singers would pick their own music.” Docter recently directed “The Divas of Song,” featuring Amaya Crichton, Mary Murphy and Sharon Owens.

Indian River County — which set up a $2.7 million fund to oppose All Aboard Florida — has filed a separate lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Transportation and one or its undersecretaries for giving All Aboard Florida the green light to sell up to $1.75 billion in bonds through the Florida Development Finance Corp., FDFC, before the agency had completed evaluation of the impact statement. The FDFC has repeatedly canceled hearings about issuing the private activity bonds and is mired in issues surrounding whether it can. “There have some procedural issues with their board members,” Durham said. Among other things, Durham said none of the FDFC board members haven’t filed proper financial reports. “Some don’t meet the statutory requirements to sit on the board,” the county attorney said. In a letter on behalf of Citizens Against Rail Expansion in Florida sent to the parent agency, Enterprise Florida, attorney Stephen Ryan — who represents Martin County in its legal actions against the transportation department — noted that the Florida Development Finance Corp. lacks three bankers nominated by the agency
and selected by the governor. Additionally, Ryan highlighted that the Florida Senate hasn’t confirmed most of the FDFC board members, among other things. Durham and the Indian River County Attorney, Dylan Reingold, co-signed that letter. “The private activity bond are just a tax-free bond,” Durham said. “Not getting the bonds, in theory that it would not stop (All Aboard Florida) from going forward.” But, All Aboard Florida would be the first privately-run high-speed passenger rail service in the nation for many decades. Investors will want as much potential benefit as possible on what can seem to be a hard roll of the dice. Tax-free bonds would sweeten the deal. “They’ve said the (private-activity) bonds are the linchpin to their operation,” Durham said. At its May 5 regular meeting, the St. Lucie County Commission joined its neighbors to the north and south by setting aside $500,000 to combat the proposed high-speed passenger train slated to run 32 trips a day between Miami and Orlando. The company plans on starting limited service between West Palm Beach and Miami by next year. By 2017 the company hopes to have trains going the entire proposed 235-mile route, mostly on existing Florida East Coast Industry rails along the Indian River.

PALM CITY — Martin County Commissioner John Haddox, District 5, recently earned an Advanced County Commissioner designation from the Florida Association of Counties, or FAC. The organization also presented him with its Presidential Advocacy Award. The recognitions were given earlier this month during the 2015 FAC Annual Conference & Exposition in St. Johns County. “It is an honor to receive these recognitions from FAC,” Haddox said. “I am committed to representing the interests of Martin County citizens to the best of my ability and advocating for our community at every opportunity.” The Advanced County Commissioner Course is an education

John Haddox program offered by FAC in partnership the University of Florida to help commissioners and county staff navigate the intricacies of local government and leadership. “The Advance Commissioner Course focuses on leadership,” Haddox said in a phone interview. “That’s broken down to functional leadership: negotiations, communications and leadership. That course would provide assistance to any new elected official in those areas.” Haddox is a Navy veteran. He rose through the enlisted ranks during his two-decade military career and retired from the service as an officer. He managed the county’s Veterans Services for about a decade, and ran for the County Commission in 2012. The Presidential Advocacy Award is given annually to those county commissioners from around the
state who have shown exceptional leadership in partnering with FAC to advance the counties’ legislative agenda. Haddox was an invaluable asset to FAC during the Legislative Session and showed exceptional commitment to advancing public policy and protecting county revenues. Haddox visited with legislators throughout the session to help educate legislators on how important the Enterprise Zones Program is to counties. Indiantown, which is in the district that includes Palm City, has one of the state’s 62 enterprise zones. The zones have an assortment of tax incentives for businesses that create employment within them. They’re managed by local enterprise zone development agencies. The Indiantown zone was created in 2011. “Very simply put, the creation of an enterprise zone is meant to encourage economic development,” Haddox said. He added, “Economic development in Indiantown increases the tax base for the entire county.” FAC’s executive director, Chris Holley, said, “Commissioner Haddox’s advocacy on behalf of Florida’s counties was instrumental in advancing negotiations on our priority issues.” For 85 years, the Florida Association of Counties has represented the diverse interests of Florida’s counties, emphasizing the importance of protecting home rule — the concept that government closest to the people governs best. I helped them make decisions, but it was their music. I hope to get groups together to do more of these concerts. There’s so much talent. I believe in getting people with talent who can’t give three months to a musical, but can put together a concert for a weekend. It’s a couple of weeks versus a couple of months. The audience gets to hear really great talent. There are so many incredibly talented singers and it’s an opportunity to use them.” Docter has not forgotten his youthful dream. “My joy is singing at Living Faith Church (in Tradition) every Sunday. When You Invest Systematically
If one of your worries is whether you’re investing at the right time, it shouldn’t be. By investing a set amount of money on a regular basis, you establish a simple routine that can help make your financial goals a reality.
See CALENDAR page 18
In addition, investing systematically can help: • Make it possible to use market fluctuations to your advantage • Add potential growth and diversification to your portfolio • Keep your long-term financial goals in focus
(Pastor) Maryanne Kehlenbach is so amazing. It’s a joy. “As a kid, I always sang to live music. Then I spent so many years with tracks, and it’s wonderful for audiences, but it’s not the same. People can make changes right then and there. Now, I’m back to a band, and it changes things around. It’s exciting for someone my age. The best part is that as a kid, I really wanted to sing. I’ll never know why it was a driving force. Pretty much everything that’s happened (in life) has been because of singing or directing. It’s opened so many doors. Now I’m singing again.” Docter said that singing and being in the theater has been a wonderful preparation for life. “You learn things as a singer and you don’t realize you’ll use them in life. You learn to adjust and judge and adapt quickly. Bad days aren’t acceptable in the theater. You suck it up and put on a show. That’s how I’ve approached life.”
Investing a set amount of money on a regular basis does not ensure a profit and does not protect against loss in declining markets. Such a plan involves continual investment in securities regardless of fluctuating price levels of such securities. You should consider your financial ability to continue the purchases through periods of low price levels.

Performing arts college test of stamina, commitment STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
PALM CITY — The first year of college brings many adjustments. Students have to learn to budget their time, work more independently and get things done without mom or dad nagging them. An elite performing arts school brings special challenges. Palm City’s Kevin Paul has just completed his first year at Carnegie-Mellon University’s’ prestigious musical theater program. Home from Pittsburgh for a break before returning to perform in professional shows, he spoke about his year of living intensely. “This whole year, they really stressed a focus on the process over the product,” he said. “It was about doing the work at hand and putting in the time, instead of shooting for the final result. You had to accept that you’ll need the practice, but if you focus on doing the work, the product will come. It’s one of the few times in our lives we can focus and dive into it.” A typical day began with acting classes from 9-11:20 a.m. After a sprint across campus, there were

Kevin Paul non-drama, required university courses from 11:30-12:30. Some days, he would have an hour-long voice lesson. After a break for lunch, he was off to dance class. Freshman year, students study ballet and the class lasts 90 minutes to two hours. That was followed by 90 minutes of music theory. Other days, there might be voice lab or movement classes.
“The day went from 9-5:30 or 6,” with a midday break,” Paul said. “Depending on the semester, some people have crew from 6:30-midnight, where they work as the backstage crew. You have to complete one crew assignment per semester and it lasts threefive weeks.” At night, students sign out practice rooms to work alone or with other students on projects. “My freshman year, I was there every night for a few hours,” Paul said. “Either alone or with a partner, it was almost a class within itself.” Paul credits the preparation his parents, Jennifer and Peter Jones of StarStruck Academy and Theatre, gave him. “I was prepared for the craziness,” he said. “It doesn’t mean it was easy. It was like a tornado at times. I had so many skills from StarStruck and being in shows and going to school and juggling shows and classes. It was more intense and more work. I did come in very prepared for the intensity. “I was expecting to be pushed and pummeled and pulled in a lot of different directions. That definitely happened. I had a lot of little things I learned back home to deal with it and manage time.

The year taught me how to do it even more.” The year was also an experience in learning to find balance. “Constantly working on multiple things gave me confidence,” he said. “There was never a moment of twiddling thumbs. (You had to learn) how to take time to work out or go for a run or go out with friends. It was about how to develop a balanced schedule. “There were many weeks I’d let go of the reins and went with the flow and tried my best. One of the best things it taught me was that I could do well, even with so much going on. I built up so much confidence with the craft and juggling so many things at one time and coming through it and doing them well.” When Paul’s second semester began, he started auditioning for summer stock and professional productions. “I would go on Saturdays and audition for four hours and come back and do homework. Sunday was a call back from auditions and Monday was classes.” Paul was cast in three leading roles in a theater in Ohio, which he considered a tremendous honor, but he elected to perform

PAUL from page 21 with the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, a professional equity house. “I’ve been cast in two shows, ‘Gypsy’ and ‘The Wedding Singer,’’’ he said. “I’m not the star and that’s totally fine. I’ll be with people from Broadway, national tours and television and here I am. I’m very excited. I’m humbled and honored to work with these people. The two people starring in ‘The Wedding Singer’ are Carnegie-Mellon grads and I’m really excited to be able to work with people who graduated and know all the teachers.” Paul will return to Pittsburgh at the end of June and open in “Gypsy” July 10. “While I’m in ‘Gypsy,’ we’ll be rehearsing ‘The Wedding Singer,’” he said. “It’s very typical, performing at night and rehearsing during the day. “If I move to New York, you’re always looking for the next show. It’s great practice.” Paul noted that his program was small and he was able to get a lot of individual attention. “There are about five girls and seven guys in musical theater and about the same number in acting,” he said. It’s about 20-25 combined. The selection process is so intensive, so there’s a high retention rate. It’s very personalized because there are so few. They plan on taking us through our senior year. They believe we can do big things.”

From the team behind THE INVISIBLE WAR, comes a startling exposé of sexual assaults on U.S. campuses, institutional cover-ups and the brutal social toll on victims and their families. Weaving together verité footage and first-person testimonies, the film follows survivors as they pursue their education while fighting for justice — despite harsh retaliation, harassment and pushback at every level.

PALM CITY — While snowbirds depart sunny Florida during the summer, interns begin to arrive at The Firefly Group, a public relations and marketing firm based in Palm City. The Firefly “jar” (as they refer to their office) is livelier than ever with the addition of two summer interns and one new employee, all three of them students who are eager to learn about the public relations industry through their time working with this award-winning firm. Interns at Firefly are affectionately referred to as “glowworms” as they learn their ways around, grow their wings, and go through the metamorphosis process to become a “firefly.” This summer, the interns are gaining hands-on experience about the inner workings of a busy public relations firm as they prepare for several major upcoming projects with a diverse client base. “We are always delighted to meet our new glowworms in the summer. They bring youthful energy and creativity as they buzz around the jar,” said Stacy Ranieri, president and chief illuminator of The Firefly Group. Brooke Cochenour, a rising senior at Clark Advanced Learning Center, will receive her associates degree in computer science this fall from Indian River State College. One of her high school graduation requirements is participating in an internship in the community. Motivated by her interest in graphic design, Cochenour’s internship at The Firefly Group will focus on assisting with the production of the 2016 Florida Ranches Calendar, an award-winning publication Firefly has been publishing for more
than a decade. Olivia Ranieri, an incoming freshman at the George Washington University’s Honors Program in Washington, D.C., is looking forward to officially experiencing the behind-the-scenes dayto-day operations of The Firefly Group. As the daughter of chief illuminator Stacy Ranieri, Olivia has been immersed in the world of public relations, community outreach, and nonprofit events since her earliest memories and is excited to collaborate with many of the organizations she has grown up with, supported and volunteered for. Olivia Ranieri will be assisting with marketing, promotion and a social media campaign for SafeSpace’s upcoming annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event in October. Safespace is a nonprofit organization that assists victims of domestic violence with shelter and supportive services. The final addition to the Firefly staff this summer is the return of Tiffany Smith. Smith was an intern at Firefly in the summer of 2014. She is currently a senior at Florida Atlantic University majoring in marketing and brings a strong base of knowledge to the team. Smith is ecstatic to have an opportunity to immerse herself in the marketing culture at such a reputable firm so early in her career. Her focus will be coordinating the educational and community outreach efforts of Keep Martin Beautiful, a local, nonprofit organization dedicated to litter prevention, improving solid waste practices, beautification, and community revitalization efforts throughout Martin County. “From the feedback we receive
