Sheriff makes case for mental-health diversion program Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

MARTIN COUNTY — Sheriff William Snyder has lamented often that he runs the county’s largest mental-health program. Unfortunately, the county jail just isn’t a good place for treating the mentally ill. Indeed, jail often worsens mental-health issues the Sheriff said. “They get progressively worse when they come in, until they’re finally strapped down foaming at the mouth,” he told the county
commission. At its May 24 regular meeting, Martin’s top cop presented the commission with an initial plan to create a diversion program to help keep the mentally ill who’ve committed minor criminal offenses out of the county jail and get them into treatment. Snyder said that nationwide about one in five jail inmates has a serious enough mental illness to warrant some form of treatment. About 15 percent of people in state prisons do as well.

PALM CITY — Three county commission races with three candidates each are in full cry. They’ll all be decided in universal primaries in August unless candidates who are not Republicans join any of the races. All three of the races stand to change the dynamics of frequent 3-2 votes on the commission. “We’re going into the sprint,” John Haddox, candidate for reelection, said. The District 5 race, Palm City and Indiantown, comes with a twist. All three candidates are
one-term commissioners. Haddox is wrapping his freshman term. Challenger Donna Melzer held the seat for four years in the 1990s, and Ed Ciampi in the 2000s. None of the three have squared off against one another before. The three will be at the Economic Council of Martin County’s and Palm City Chamber of Commerce’s candidate forum on Thursday, June 9, taking questions from a moderator Sherry Plymale. What have voters been asking about? “The most important one for the people I’m talking to is that

Source: The Official White House Sources say President Barack Obama is back for some R & R this weekend and Palm City is the destination spot. According to reports, he will be at the Floridian in Palm City for a weekend golf get-away. Martin County Sheriff’s Office says there should be no traffic commotion due to the trip but will keep public informed. Floridian, in Palm City, would not confirm the president’s stay or schedule but said to Your Voice News & Views, “as far as I’m concerned we are officially closed for the season.” The trip is altogether hush-hush as of press time. President Obama is pictured here playing a round of golf at Farm Neck golf course during his vacation on Martha’s Vineyard, Aug. 24, 2009. The president’s most recent trip to Palm City was March 2015. He played golf at the Floridian with Houston Astros owner, Jim Crane, who purchased the property in 2010.
