County to build new stormwater treatment area to clean All American Ditch Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER
pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com
PALM CITY — Some of the dirtiest water flowing into the St. Lucie River comes from Palm City, but that could change after some horse trading between the South Florida Water Management District and Martin County. “All American Ditch has long been recognized as one of the most polluted tributaries to the St. Lucie River,” Deborah Drum, the county’s manager of ecosystem restoration, said. At a recent meeting, the district’s governing board voted to swap Martin County 38 acres it owns along Mapp Road for the county’s share of Allapattah Flats alongside Southwest Martin Highway near Indiantown. The Mapp property is just south of Piper’s Landing. The county aims to construct a stormwater treatment area on the Mapp property. As it is, the

PALM CITY — Cristopher “Cris” Harrison died in a Stuart automobile crash on May 20, leaving a very large family in mourning. On Friday, May 29, the Palm City Dolphins held a candlelight vigil to honor the beloved coach at Jock Leighton Park, 3755 S.W. Mapp Road. “Cris touched many lives,” Glen Gimpel, president of the Palm City Dolphins, said at the vigil. The Dolphins are part of the Pop Warner League. About 200 attended the vigil. “He didn’t coach one team,” Gimpel said. “He coached two teams at one time. That’s the way Cris was.” Harrison was 38. Martin Sheriff ‘Hogs’ the road hunting for boulevard bullies Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER
pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com
MARTIN COUNTY — Sheriff William Snyder is Hogging the roads. The Sheriff’s Office is adding two Harley-Davidson Road Kings to its fleet. They’re not parade bikes. These Road Kings are going to be on the Aggressive Driving Unit putting some road rash on dangerous drivers — the sort that cut off others, speed, weave without signaling, and tailgate with attitude. The ones that cause crashes. “Tailgating seems to be going through the roof,” Lt. Steve Mochen, traffic division commander at the Sheriff’s Office, said. Snyder had a warning for those boulevard bullies. “These motorcycles will be on the road shortly,” Snyder said at a press conference. Just in time for what the National Safety Council dubs the “100 deadly days,” the stretch between Memorial and Labor days.
Staff photo by Patrick McCallister Deputies David Rosko and Brian Merrifield will be high on the Hogs looking for aggressive drivers. On Friday, May 29, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office unveiled its new Harley-Davidson Road Kings. The motorcycles will target aggressive drivers. Road fatalities increase during

reasons. Deputies Brian Merrifield and David Rosko will be on the Hogs. Mochen said it’s been about seven or eight years since Martin drivers have seen the boys in green on Harleys. But, it was time to bring ‘em back. “Martin County has gotten much bigger, and with that comes people who drive more aggressively,” he said. Mochen said there have been 17 roadway deaths in Martin so far this year. In 2014, there were 15. While alcohol played a role in some of those deaths, Mochen said mobile-phone use and bad attitudes are increasingly factors in fatalities. It’s not just Martin County, however. The safety council reported that the every one of first five months of 2015 saw higher traffic fatalities than previous years. From January to May, the Sheriff’s Office issued 4,501

Letter to the editor: A sad farewell To the editor: Mrs. Wendy Matthews has been a teacher for 32 years. For 18 of those years, her presence has been enjoyed at Bessey Creek Elementary. Although she deserves the relaxation, peace and quiet of retirement, she will be missed by many. She taught our second-grade class this year and ended her career in the same manner it began, putting her students and their education above all else. She has a special talent for making every child feel as though they are her favorite. If you ask any of her students, they will have a story of why she loves them most. One child was overheard saying “she was really going to retire last year, but when she found out I would be in her class, she decided to stay one more year. What she likes best about teaching is that it is never a dull moment. Every day is a surprise.” For the past 32 years teaching has been my life, I›m really going to miss it.” She says her best memories will be of singing, dancing and putting on plays. We have been blessed to have you as a part of our school family. You will be remembered as one of the most loved, cherished, and special teachers in our children›s lives. Thank you, Mrs. Matthews!!!!
Love from your second- grade class of 2014-2015

Drum said the county and district jointly purchased Allapattah Flats in 2008 for about $4 million each. It had been a ranch with a lot of water redirection. She said natural water flows have been progressively restored. Additionally, the county and district added trails for equestrian, bicycle and pedestrian use. “All the infrastructure is in place to get it rehydrated and native plants are coming back,” Drum said. Making it time for the county to move onto other projects. Gabe Margasak, spokesman for the water-management district, said Allapattah Flats will remain open to public recreation. He said the district will have two deed restrictions on the Mapp land — the county must use it for storm-water treatment, and, if possible, it must be open to the

He was also the head coach for the Martin County High School’s JV team. Harrison was also the shop steward for the Teamsters Union. Gimpel said Harrison inspired volunteerism and passion in youngsters and adults. “Cris knew the game, and as importantly he knew how to teach the game,” he said. Gimpel added, “Because of the way he coached, the kids fell in love with the game.” Jackie McNevin, vice president of the Dolphins, said she couldn’t

public. Some of the county’s storm-water treatment areas look more like parks. For example, the Old Palm City West STA — the stormwater treatment area nestled between Cornell and Butler avenues by 35th Street — is split between fresh and brackish water reservoirs by a limestone dam that’s made to appear like a walkway. Most stormwater flows into the southern reservoir, then seeps through the limestone dam that removes some impurities into the northern reservoir. That reservoir gets the seeped water, along with some groundwater. The park-like appearance of the Palm City West STA is deliberate, Drum said. “We always put effort into not just making water facilities, but to make them pleasing for the community around them to see,” she said. The county has initial plans ready for the proposed All American Ditch STA, along with about $1.4 million in grants in hand for it. The county has applications for another $670,000 in grants. The proposed storm-water treatment area will cost about $3.4 million but build. Construction is likely to start in 2016.

TREASURE COAST — Three Republicans have announced their aim to make Congressman Patrick Murphy’s seat red in 2016, and about 10 are known to, or strongly suspected of, considering it. The Republican field for the 18th Congressional District could run out of elbow and leg room. Just like 2014. No matter. Palm Beach County Commissioner Priscilla Taylor aims to thwart all of them and keep the seat in Democratic hands. “I’ve been thinking about (running for the 18th Congressional District) for a long time,” she said. Taylor said Murphy has done a good job since he was elected in 2012, so there was no reason to challenge him in 2014. However, Murphy is vacating the seat to make a run to become Florida’s junior Senator. Marco Rubio, who now fills that seat, is aiming to become the next president of the United States. The 60-year-old candidate was born in Fort Pierce and grew up there. She said staying on the Treasure Coast was and remains an easy decision. “I was raised by my grandparents,” Taylor said. “All the other kids went to college and left the area. I felt like I wanted to stay close.” In addition to being a county commissioner, Taylor has been a city commissioner and state representative. The former insurance businesswoman said she learned the value of bi-partisanship early in her career. “I love research and I love coming up with things that I think serve everyone,” she said. The most important concern facing the Treasure Coast, Taylor said, is water quality. Taylor said few quibble about what needs to be done to preserve area waterways from the Army Corps of Engineers’ releases of nutrient-rich Lake Okeechobee waters into the C-44 Canal. That water travels to the St. Lucie and
Indian rivers. Send the water south through Everglades restoration. She said that’s decided and budgeted. “We need to make sure that money comes to clean the water,” Taylor said. Priscilla Taylor Another issue facing the Treasure Coast, she said, is its slowly disappearing eastern border. “On the East Coast, we have the shoreline that’s steadily going into the water and we need to do something with it,” Taylor said. So far the Florida Division of Elections only lists Democrat John “Juan” Xuna, Stuart, as a candidate for the Treasure Coast congressional district. However, Taylor’s fellow county commissioner and Democrat Melissa McKinlay has announced her candidacy. Republican Martin County School Board member Rebecca Negron has announced a candidacy. St. Lucie County Commissioner Tod Mowery has also launched a campaign, as has Carl Domino. The former state legislator beat out a crowded primary field to run against Murphy in 2014. Both those men are Republicans. Palm City’s K.C. Traylor — of Florida Not All Aboard fame — has announced on her Facebook page that she is “deeply considering running for Congress.” Traylor is Republican, but appeared in ads for Democrat Murphy. Another prominent name on the list of likely Republican primary candidates is Martin County Commissioner Doug Smith. Hobe Sound businessman Gary Uber is another that might be in the coming Republican primary, as is State Representative Gayle Harrell. Another Republican name from 2014, Alan Schlesinger, is also named among likely candidates fir ‘16.

But, what’s a Christmas parade without cops on Harleys?

To be ticketed for aggressive driving, a motorist must commit at least two moving violations in a hazardous manner. The fines for aggressive driving can vary, because Florida officers cite the drivers’ specific violations and
note “aggressive.” Florida is one of 15 states with laws against aggressive driving. Mochen said the county has two big aggressive driver hot spots. One is Federal Highway between Hobe Sound and Stuart. “We get a lot on (I-95),” he said. The bikes cost the department $45,700. The sheriff said in addition to looking for unsafe drivers on highways, the deputies on them will also spend some time looking for neighborhood

Master Jeweler and Gemologist Terry Rieger’s 41 year career had an unusual beginning. As a traditional artist in her early 20’s Terry’s culinary hobby provided her artistic talent. She delighted in designing confectionery masterpieces. If she wasn’t creating exquisite decorated wedding cakes for friends and family, she was sculpting whimsical, mouthwatering candies, or designing sugar Easter eggs with complete 3-D panoramas inside. The occupants of those windowed eggs were meticulously detailed, right down to microscopic whiskers on the tiny Easter bunnies. One of those Easter eggs, a gift to a family friend, is responsible for launching her lifelong career in jewelry. The family friend was a jeweler, and so taken with her artistry was he, that he insisted her designs must be produced in gold. Her mentor, refusing to take no for an answer, arranged for a full compliment of jewelers tools to be delivered, and arranged for her to be the first and only student ever tutored by noted Russian jeweler Constance Osmanki. Terry found herself commuting back and forth to Europe for the next twelve Years. Studying and perfecting her craft in London’s famed diamond quarter Hatton Garden. Designing Horses, is a sad passion, as a child Terry rode her favorite horse Rusty, however years later she was diagnosed with allergic asthma and cannot be near a horse. So she designs them in gold. And as you can see they look exactly like the live ones. Terry’s passion remains custom jewelry: however, and her exquisite designs range from the extraordinarily graceful to the wonderfully whimsical.

$200,000. As part of his efforts to expand the number of clubs participating, Gary Collins reached out to Harbour Ridge’s Membership and Marketing director, Lauren Pahl. She and club manager, Michael Salerno, were thrilled with the opportunity to bring this charity event to Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club, making them the first Treasure Coast Club to participate! Lauren and Suzy Duffy, marketing communications manager, worked together to communicate the event and its great cause to club members of Harbour Ridge and ensure the team was excited for the big day. The entire club staff was happy to lend support and prep the team, from tips on training, heat exhaustion and staying hydrated from the fitness staff, to food and refreshments from the culinary team the day of the event, everyone jumped in to support their marathon team. Head golf professional Rob Dauk has served the club for 20 years and was on hand from dawn to dusk to lend support and encouragement, as well. Harbour Ridge’s Marathon Team was composed of four staff members — Kyle Tiller, Sean Knott, Tom Copper and Robert Romo. All four were thrilled to support their club and community by participating in the event. They started playing golf at 6:30 am on Wednesday, May 27 and did not finish playing until the sun went down. Combined, they played an amazing 581 holes in one day. To support their marathon team’s campaign to raise money for children’s charities, club members, staff and local supporters donated flat fees or pledged a dollar amount per hole. Harbour Ridge’s members really got into the event and sent encouraging emails and notes of support beforehand. The day of the event, the sense of community and support was incredible. Several

club members came out to cheer the team on and brought refreshments to keep them going. Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club prides itself on giving back to the community and this, paired with their focus on fitness and a new LifeStyle Center on the way, made Marathon Golf’s “Fore the Community” charity campaign a perfect fit for their club and community. Their marathon team raised more than $15,000 in its inaugural year and donations for this great cause are still coming in. Harbour Ridge Yacht and County Club is a private gated community on 885 acres. It features two award-winning golf courses, 10 Har-Tru tennis courts and a marina with 98 boat slips. A new Lifestyle Center is in the works and will feature a salon and spa, spin rooms, increased cardio and training space and much more. All of these amenities are being constructed without special assessments to the club’s members. The board of directors, management and staff, along with the members, are all dedicated to maintaining their commitment to financial soundness and providing an active, healthy lifestyle in a luxurious setting, enabling members to enrich their quality of life. Social worker uses experience to help others Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
PALM CITY — When social worker Darcy Flierl counsels others, she speaks from personal knowledge and experience. A troubled teen who found a path to success, Flierl has just applied for admission to a doctoral program. She has walked the walk. Flierl was originally from Buffalo, N.Y., but she moved to Palm City when she was a child. “My mom was a single mom who was dependent on her parents financially,” she said. “We moved with my grandparents to Martin County in 1980. I lived with my mom and grandparents until I was 12 or 13, when my mom remarried and moved out. “I had been a difficult child, hard to handle and strong-willed. When my mom remarried, my rebellion began to peak. I got involved in risky behavior and they
had no idea how to handle me. They loved me. I would see my mom, who lived in town, but I felt very abandoned.” Flierl attended Palm City Elementary school and Stuart Middle School. In eighth grade, she was sent to live with her father, who was chief of police in Panama City. She only stayed there a month or two and was sent back again to him her freshman year in high school. “He ran for sheriff and I behaved,” Flierl said. “I was very uncomfortable and didn’t really know my dad, his wife and kids. I was on my best behavior to get back here.” She spent one year at Martin County High School and was put into rehab because her family thought she was using drugs. “I wasn’t (using drugs), she said. “I was emotional, angry, depressed and violent. I broke things in the house and had total

But in the final months when Mom’s condition got worse, her doctor recommended Treasure Coast Hospice. They provided expert care for Mom, supported our caregiving and guided the whole family. The parents don’t know how to parent to the personality. It’s not one size fits all. I truly believe I was a challenge to raise and my mother just didn’t have the skills for a difficult kid.” Flierl tried to succeed at Martin County and South Fork High schools and ended up in Spectrum Junior-Senior High school, where she spent her sophomore through senior years. “It was a game-changer,” Flierl said. “It was the first time I had positive relationships with adults. People saw my strengths and put me in leadership roles. They gave me the opportunity to speak publicly. My science teacher, Randi Schwartz, changed my life. She believed I could go to college, I didn’t have a history of success to believe that I could.” Flierl went to community college, with her step dad paying for it. It took her six years to get the two-year associate degree because she had an undetected math disability and could not pass algebra. Still, she kept trying. “I’m resilient and I persevere,” she said. “I didn’t know how to be a student. I failed a lot in my first 25 years, I failed a lot and spent them failing and making mistakes. After her associate degree, Flierl went on to get a bachelor’s degree in social work from Florida Atlantic University. “I wanted to be a teacher, to impact students the way I was,” Flierl said. “I was told I couldn’t major in education because of the math disability. I majored in social work and got a master’s degree from FSU. I graduated with honors. I never got an A until college. Once I got a taste of success, I never wanted to stop. I just applied for a doctoral program at Barry University. My goal is that I (still) want to teach. There is more than one way to get (what you want.) I want to do further research on the spectrum of domestic violence and what causes it.” After time spent working in

Atlanta, Flierl returned to Stuart in 2009 to take care of her ailing grandmother. She got a job at Tykes & Teens as a psychotherapist and became director of prevention programs. That program dealt with drug and alcohol use, as well as other societal issues affecting the health of young people, include bullying and teenage dating violence. She remained there until 2014, when she took a job as director of programs at SafeSpace. She left there in March 2015. “It was a very stressful position,” she said. “It just wasn’t the right time for me. My daughter is in sixth grade. It’s the time parents need to turn it up a notch. I wanted to be there for her.” Flierl has opened a private practice in Stuart, counseling everyone from tweens to seniors. She also does consulting for nonprofits and is an adjunct at Indian River State College in the human services department. “In my business and personally, I hope to guide people in a way that will give them personal guidance and inspiration to be their best and not let history define who they are, not let other peoples’ opinions define who they are,” she said. “If I had bought into that, I would probably be on the streets.” Darcy Flierl’s practice is located at The Royal Palm Financial Plaza, 759 S. Federal Highway, Stuart. Call (772) 486-9109. For more information, visit her website www. darcyflierl.com.

SEASON from page 23
“I have some very cool people coming,” he said, “Jeffrey Tambor is an amazing actor. My favorite show is “The Return of the Dukes of Hazzard Christmas Show.” Both are good singers. They can sing and we’re going retro. We’ll get a great show out of Wopat and Schneider.” Loesser also mentioned Faith Prince, Darlene Love and…the Wellington Ukulele Orchestra from New Zealand. “I had wanted to do it for years,” he said. “They’re very funny, and where else can you see an entire ukulele orchestra?” After this past season’s success with “The Rabbi and the Italian,” Loesser put together “The Jew, the Old Jew, and the Guy from Jersey.” “They’re very good comedians,” he said, “People love comedy shows. They do clean stand-up. It’s not that easy to find, but there’s a demand for it. It’s your basic Bob Hope-type humor.” There are returning favorites, including a Peter White Christmas with Rick Braun and Mindi Abair. “They’ve been here eight straight years,” he said. “They’re the best that are out there. It’s become a social event at the Lyric. The Capitol Steps will be returning, as will Lee Greenwood, the latter for the first time in nine years. Loesser is enjoying his new role. “This allows me to not worry so much about day-to-day operations,” he said. “I’ll add new things and do expanded educational outreach. I may even produce a show or two. It frees me up to think more creatively. I’m still doing community relations and raising money for the theater. It frees me up to look at areas we haven’t developed.” Loesser noted that the season’s list is by no means complete. New shows will be announced throughout the summer. The Lyric Theatre is located at 59 S.W. Flagler Ave., Stuart. For more information, visit the website www.lyrictheatre.com or call (772) 286-7827.
tine’s Day, Feb. 14. “Ballroom: South Beach Style” features the art of ballroom dancing with a Latin flair Feb. 17. Tito Puente Jr. is “Keeping the Legacy Alive” Feb. 20 and Darlene Love sings some of her greatest hits in a return to the Lyric Feb. 22-23. The month ends with “Beginnings: The Music of Chicago,” Feb. 28. Lyric favorite Steve Solomon combines elements from his popular shows, as well as new material, in a show March 1. Actor Jeffrey Tambor, known for his roles in “Arrested Development” and “Transparent,” has a conversation with the audience March 2. “The Magic of Motown” brings the harmonies and choreography of the best of the groups from that era to life March 7. On March 8, the music of Kander and Ebb is brought to life in “Kander and Ebb… and All That Jazz,” with songs from shows like “Chicago” and “Cabaret.” Legendary entertainer Tony Orlando brings his greatest hits to the Lyric March 10. A tribute to the Bee Gees, “Stayin’ Alive,” comes to town March 12 and the Doo Wop Project explores the history of that musical style March 13. Country music band Savannah Jack brings vocal harmonies and Southern sass to the theater March 15. The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra brings musicians, crazy costumes and a New Zealand twist to music March 18. Robert Navarro and his Latin Jazz Orchestra present “A Night at the Palladium” March 19, re-creating the dance hall in New York. Fiesta Mexico-Americana features the Grammy-winning group Los Lobos March 21. “Celtic Nights: Spirit of Freedom,” explores the roots of Celtic music and its effect on American music. The April 9 show features elaborate imagery and costumes. John Loesser, who recently gave up day-to-day operations of the theater to become its artistic director, spoke about the new season.
TAYLOR from page 12 The congressional district covers St. Lucie and Martin counties, along with a sliver of Palm Beach County’s northern side. Most candidates will likely aim to qualify by petition. Vicki Davis, Martin County’s Supervisor of Elections, said candidates for the 18th Congressional District who want to qualify by petition need to gather 4,854 signatures by next year. She said signers are free in primaries and general elections, 2016, to vote for candidates other than those
they signed qualifying petitions for. It only means that a petition signer is helping a candidate qualify for a run without having to pay the filing fee, 6 percent of the annual salary of the office sought. The current salary of a rank-and-file member of Congress is $174,000. It’s been that since 2009. Those who don’t collect the needed signatures would have to pay nearly $10,500 to qualify. More about Taylor is at www. taylorforcongress2016.com. The campaign phone number is (561) 863-4267.

Stuart Sunrise Rotary Club announces scholarship winners FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
MARTIN COUNTY — Sunrise Rotary conducts many events during the year that help fund its scholarship program, which – although scholarship and community service are valued – also relies heavily on financial need as a criterion for selecting winners. Two of the 2015 recipients accepted their scholarships on May 7 at a meeting of the organization. Savannah Krevitz, a senior at Martin County High School belongs to the OPUS Chorus, is a Girl Scout, has participated in habitat restoration, beach cleanups, and teaching special education programs for children with learning disabilities who previously only received a brief period of assistance each day. Magali Lorado is a senior at South Fork High School who has worked with programs for the elderly and for her church, where she raised $7,200 toward the construction of a new building, supervises children at summer camp and works at a Subway.
She plans to go to IRSC to prepare for a career as a dental hygienist. Angelica Sandova (who was unable to attend the event), will graduate from Martin County High School and go into IRSC’s Nursing Program. Ken moved to Stuart in 1967 as General Manager of Hoosier Metal Fabricators. He co-founded and was president of E.R.K. Manufacturing. The firm was acquired by Chromalloy American Corp., then by Turbo Combustor Technologies and today is Paradigm Precision. Ken was the Chamber Chairman from 1969-70. After Ken retired from E.R.K. he decided to take up consulting to keep busy. He came to work with the chamber as a Business Consultant in 1998. He provided pertinent information and personal advice to hundreds of chamber members and new businesses. He loved the chamber and what it stood for. He was a team player, always ready to assist, which at times included taking trash out to the dumpster.
