PALM CITY — Crews have been moving utilities along Martin Highway since January. They’re almost done, and two years of roadwork will start next month. “In July, the contractor, the roadway contractor, is going to start working,” Betsy Jeffers, design project manager, said. The Florida Department of Transportation is putting about $16 million into expanding Martin Highway between Mapp Road westward to the Ronald Reagan Turnpike from two to four lanes. The work will build on the addition of the Veterans Memorial Bridge to Martin County’s transportation infrastructure. The four-lane bridge opened in December along with a segment of the highway from Mapp eastward to the St. Lucie River. When completed, Martin will

Judge-elect ready for challenge Staff writer

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PALM CITY — Laurie Buchanan, who will become a judge of the 19th Judicial Circuit in January, has always planned ahead. The Indiana native attended Quinnipiac Law School in Connecticut because she had to work during the day and it was one of the few law schools with a night program. After law school, she moved to Florida. “I wanted to move to Florida because I knew my parents would be retiring here,” she said. “It’s not good for a legal career to move around. To be in the cold, I could go (back) to Indiana.” Buchanan came to Florida in 1995 and worked for two years in the office of the Public Defender. Then she spent three years at the Guardian ad Litem program, serving Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties. “I was the only attorney and the first full-time one,” she said. “I was the only attorney for four counties and some days I was in court in all four. I absolutely loved it. I left two weeks before I gave birth to my son.” When she returned to work,

she went into private practice to give her more time flexibility. In 2004, she went to work for the state family court manager and in 2005, was appointed part-time magistrate, giving her additional responsibilities. In 2006, she became a full-time hearing officer. She held that position when she ran for the seat being vacated by Judge Robert Makemson’s upcoming retirement. “I ran unsuccessfully for judge in 2006,” she said. “I advanced through the primary and came in second in a three-way race. For the last five judicial appointments, I got to the short list. I love what I do. There’s not a lot of difference between a hearing officer and a judge.” As a hearing officer, she hears child support cases and other cases that help ease the backlog in the courts. She hears civil and family court cases but not criminal cases. “As judge, I’ll hear whatever the child judge assigns,” she said. “It could be criminal, family, civil or probate. Circuit judges rotate throughout the circuit. We have three female judges of the 19. I’ll be the fourth.” To qualify, Buchanan had to get 3,902 signatures, representing 1 percent of all registered voters in

the four-county area. With the help of husband Kyle’s family and lots of friends, they were able to get more than they needed.

“You had to qualify by May 2,” Buchanan said. “No one else

World Trade Center steel beam forms Palm City monument Celebrate the Change of Season with Martin County’s #1 Salon

PALM CITY — Since May 1, an unidentified steel beam has stood quiet sentry at the entrance to the Peter & Julie Cummings Library parking lot. Soon a plaque will tell people what they’re looking at. And on Saturday, June 14, Flag Day, that steel beam will be ceremonially dedicated at 9 a.m. For those who remember watching the horrible images — live or on television — of the World Trade Center burning on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, the plaque is probably not needed. a pretty good notion that the 22foot beam came from the famous buildings toppled by the worst terrorist attack in the nation’s history. The monument was a joint effort between Martin County and the United States of America 911 First Responders, an unincorporated civic group formed to provide fellowship for Fire Department City of New York, New York Police Department and other agencies’ first responders to the Sept. 11 attacks now living on the Treasure Coast. The group has gotten involved in numerous charitable activities.

STEEL from page 4 Dennis McKenna co-founded the group. He helped Martin County and the city of Port St. Lucie obtain four pieces of steel from the World Trade Center. “I feel it’s a blessing from God above that he is able, that I was able, to obtain so many pieces of steel and bring it 1,643 miles into my community,” McKenna said. “(It’s) a symbol that the residents and visitors of Martin County will always remember that attack, that cowardly attack.” Another piece of World Trade Center steel has been part of a monument at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center since 2012. McKenna said a third is used as a traveling educational display in St. Lucie County, while a fourth is awaiting placement at a Stuart firehouse. Martin County Commissioner John Haddox, Palm City, will be the master of ceremonies at the dedication. He said McKenna and the county looked at a couple places in Palm City to place the 2.75-ton beam before deciding on the library. “It’s a public place visited by many people,” Haddox said. “It’ll be seen by all the library patrons and it’s right at a conspicuous place.” McKenna said another reason for the library is because it has large conference rooms available to host

annual educational events on Sept. 11. He said the steel beam has awaited a home since 2011. The beam had to be placed in the Palm City area, because former commissioner Ed Ciampi used district funds to pay for the monument stand. McKenna said USA 911 First Responders prepped the steel for permanent placement. “We cleaned it and sealed it,” he said. “That was done through donations from Home Depot and (VM Iron Works And Structural Steel).” The beam is mounted upright. “That symbolizes to me that we’re still standing as is (the World Trade Center),” Haddox said. “No matter what kind of dastardly, sneaky, cowardly attack, we’re still standing.” The 1,776-foot One World Trade Center, also called the Freedom Tower, will open later this year, or in 2015. Other buildings are open at the center, which is also home of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. The local beam also has a slight tilt aimed north by northeast. “Just like in Port St. Lucie, both pieces are facing toward New York,” McKenna said. There’s a smaller piece of steel from the World Trade Center displayed in Palm City at the Martin County Fire Rescue Department station at 3290 S.W. Mapp Road. The library is at 2551 Matheson Ave., Palm City.

A steel beam from the World Trade Center forms a Sept. 11 monument that’ll be dedicated on June 14, Flag Day, at 9 a.m. The monument is at the Peter & Julie Cummings Library.

Fighting as a community for our waterways F

or decades, the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon have been damaged by nutrient heavy freshwater from Lake Okeechobee and local runoff. As your representative, I have been committed to working in Congress with both parties and across all levels of government to push for funding for local environmental projects necessary to improve the health of our local waterways. From constantly advocating for funding for the ongoing C-44 Indian River Lagoon South Project, to persistently calling for the Chief’s Report for the Central Everglades Planning Project, or CEPP, to be finalized, to pushing for a resolution to disputes so that the nearly-completed Kissimmee River Project can be constructed, I have been putting pressure on the Army Corps to keep these critical Everglades restoration projects moving forward. Once completed, all of these projects will benefit the health of our waterways by filtering water before it reaches the St. Lucie, storing more water north of Lake Okeechobee, and ultimately, allowing more water to flow south of the lake. By keeping our foot on the gas on these and other outside the box approaches, such as water farming and filtration projects, we have demonstrated the urgency

I am happy to report that following a letter I sent along with Congressman Tom Rooney, the Corps recently announced that it will be moving forward on the Kissimmee River and the C-111 South Dade projects. amount that is eligible for award for FY2015. Just as I petitioned the White House to support this funding, I will continue to work in Congress to fight throughout the upcoming appropriations process to protect this funding that will help filter water that flows into the St. Lucie River. I am happy to report that following a letter I sent along with Congressman Tom Rooney, the Corps recently announced that it will be moving forward on the Kissimmee River and the C-111 South Dade projects. These projects play a vital role in helping to store more water north of Lake Okeechobee and connecting key parts of the Everglades restoration system. Like many residents across the Treasure Coast, however, I was extremely disappointed and frustrated by the Army Corps’ Review Board’s recent decision to delay approval of CEPP, which would move more water south of Lake Okeechobee. Immediately following this announcement, I led a bipartisan Florida delegation letter urging the board to reconvene as quickly as possible in order to move this critical project forward. The Corps heard our cry and assured us that they were to reconvene at the end of May so that this project can move into the next step of the approval process.

We have to put every effort forward and take many approaches to address this multi-faceted issue, which is why in addition to these Corps-related efforts, I have also been working on legislative action to create additional water storage areas and to improve estuary maintenance. Preserving and protecting our waterways requires an active and involved community. We should all be proud that, together, we brought national attention to the issue, resulting in the administration prioritizing the health of our Treasure Coast waterways. However, we must also recognize that we have a long fight ahead of us, and it will take many years to undo the damage done over many decades. To that end, I encourage everyone in our community to stay involved by completing an important survey to tell Congress what you think about prioritizing critical funding to keep these projects moving forward, which you can do by visiting tinyurl.com/IRLpetition. As we have seen over the past year, when we work together, much progress can be made. I look forward to continuing to serve as your voice in Congress, fighting together for our precious ecosystem. U.S. Rep. Patrick E. Murphy represents Florida’s District 18.

D-Day plus 70 years: the battle is still going I

started my adult working life as a doughnut baker back in 1985. That’s where I learned about the World War II that didn’t make history books. On June 6, the world commemorates the 70th anniversary of the day that changed modern history, the launch of Operation Overlord. D-Day. But, head back to 1985 with me, please. At 8 p.m. most days, I started my baking shift at the 24-hour Mister Donut, in DeLand. By 4 a.m., I’d see a small host of the regular coffee flies — the insomniacs, the disturbed-dreamers and the lost seekers attracted to the dim florescent glow that promised other wounded souls to talk to. During my decade of working there I met many World War II veterans at 1, 2, and 3 a.m. During the hours when most

psychological scars of that terrible war. These were the World War II veterans who’d go get coffee, disheveled after waking from nightmares. Deadpan eyes staring at the coffee mugs they cuddled in their hands gave away their pain. Fate pulled an interesting twist in my young life. I spent about the first five or six years working alongside Lisa Ragsdale, a cantankerous woman who grew up in wartime Germany. The veterans and Lisa would talk at great length and detail about wartime Europe. I vicariously experienced years of World War II while making round, fried sweetbreads and

Lisa vividly described the fear she felt when the American troops were coming. She remembered the terror when they arrived. After getting to know her, I got beneath the crab’s shell to see her palpable hurt and anger. Lisa was angry at the Americans. At first. Shortly after her village was occupied, she wasn’t angry at the American servicemen anymore. Lisa, then a girl of about 10, became angry at the pillars of her perfect German community. The ministers, the businessmen, the upstanding citizens. The people who’d betrayed the naïve girl by following the momentarily “conve-

Ask the Anytime Gal ly true? Answer: The word “natural” is pretty generic and can be very misleading. I would rather you stick with unprocessed foods. The best and easiest way to determine if something is “real food,” in other words, unprocessed and healthy for you is simple. Does it spoil? If it doesn’t spoil, it is filled with preservatives and you want to avoid it.

Question: I just turned 55. I don’t know what kind of exercise to do at my age and I’m worried about injury. What do you recommend? Answer: Fifty-five is still young, and unless you have an injury, you will have few limitations. Start with moderate activity which is safe and recommended at any age, and then build slowly. Moderate activity should cause a slight increase in heart rate and breathing. It should feel somewhat challenging, but you should still be able to carry on a conversation without difficulty. Listen to your body, and don’t try to do too much too soon. If something is painful, ease up or find a less intense activity. Walking, biking, yoga, Tai Chi and swimming are all excellent activities for the cardiovascular system, but you should also incorporate some strength training two to three days a week. Maintaining muscle

Linda Lawrence mass is particularly important as we age. You might consider working with a trainer. It’s a safe and easy way to get started. A good trainer can teach you a safe routine and gear it to accommodate any injuries or physical limitations you may have. And, of course, always check with your doctor before beginning any exercise program. Question: People keep telling me that if a food is “natural,” it must be good for me. Is this real-

Question: I’m trying to lose weight. What is the most important thing for me to cut back on, fat or carbs? Answer: SUGAR! By far, sugar is the biggest problem in everyone’s diet today. More than 600,000 food products sold in the United States contain sugar. Virtually everything packaged contains sugar and the labels often mask it under terms including ‘’fruit juice,” “date sugar,’’ “agave nectar’’ or “blackstrap molasses.’’ They all contain fructose, which can fry your liver and cause the same diseases as does alcohol. An example that may surprise

you: A 20-ounce Coca-Cola has 27 grams of “total sugars.” A standard, six-ounce flavored Yoplait yogurt also has 27 grams of total sugars. A Greek yogurt with no added sweeteners is 16 grams of total sugar per six ounces. That means each Yoplait has 11 grams of added sugar. So, when you consume a Yoplait, you’re getting a yogurt and the equivalent of eight ounces of Coca-Cola. Check the label and look for foods with less than 5 grams of sugar per serving. Question: My doctor says I need to exercise and I know he’s right, but I’m so busy. I just don’t know where or how I can find the time. Any suggestions? Answer: It can be a challenge to find the time when you’ve got a hectic schedule. Start by taking a moment to remind yourself that your health is at stake. You’re not wasting time by being physically active, you’re buying time. The time you spend exercising now

ic value.” The about decade-old organization is based in Hobe Sound. It formed to help promote the Martin County Comprehensive Growth Management Plan and educate people about local environmental issues. The non-partisan organization has developed great visibility and creating the fund almost certainly raises the profile of those opposing All Aboard Florida. “I’m delighted to have the Guardians with us to bring awareness about All Aboard Florida,” Palm City’s K.C. Trailor said in a phone interview. She co-founded the unincorporated Florida Not All Aboard, an opposition group to All Aboard Florida. “The Guardians are a very reputable organization.” Trailor said she used to be a board member on the environmental-education organization. Trailor said she resigned that position to spend time on opposing All Aboard Florida. She’s now a paid consultant to the Guardians. “They’re not supporting (Florida Not All Aboard) financially in any way, but are supporting getting the message out to the public,”

Her voice took on a growl as she talked about the men she’d respected before. “All those sons of (expletive) said, ‘We didn’t know,’” she told me. “(Expletive). They knew. They didn’t have the balls to stand against it, and they didn’t have the balls to admit to participating.” She said something else, and it didn’t make sense. “That war isn’t finished.” I’ve got 25 more years behind me now to consider her words. Lisa Ragsdale was right. We’re still fighting World War II in many ways. Operation Overlord was far more than the largest air, land and sea operation ever undertaken. It was more than a ballsy crapshoot to beat Nazi Germany or die trying. No, June 6, 1944, was the day that the Allies put everything they had left into fostering the modern world we live in. Normandy was the place modern humanity started a war against evil itself, evil that went beyond Adolf Hitler. America, the great democratic experiment, faced its greatest challenge on Dec. 7, 1941. Pearl Harbor. The nation was either going to do what those German

www.YourVoiceWeekly.com Trailor said. Florida East Coast Industries, owns the proposed rail service that’d run from downtown Miami to the Orlando International Airport. The 235-mile service could start as early as 2016. The company only plans to have stops in Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, none on the Treasure Coast for now. If current plans, announced in 2012, are realized, the service would run 32 high-speed trips a day north and south, 16 north and 16 south from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. The company uses the same tracks for freight trains. Local opposition has been growing rapidly in recent months. Many of the objections center around the train bridge traversing the St. Lucie River nestled between the Roosevelt and Old Dixie Highway bridges. Boating businesses and groups say that the 32 additional trains a day will effectively close the St. Lucie to navigation and destroy the marine industry on the Treasure Coast. Florida Not All Aboard, which is the most visible opposition group, didn’t exist until the middle of

It picked the inconvenient latter. While democracy is more a continuum than destination, the fact is that today it exists and is slowly growing on every habitable continent. Human rights, too. While there are some very dangerous holdouts against democracy and human rights, the fact is we’re likely on an irreversible march toward their universality that’ll probably bring about eventual world peace. I believe that. And I believe that June 6, 1944, is when the march began in earnest. About 200,000 men faced a hailstorm of death to put their boots on France’s beaches 70 years ago. Many died there. The youngest survivors are nearly 90 now and the last will leave us within two decades. Those who didn’t pay physical prices in the war against evil they stated that day paid dear psychological ones. I’ve seen those scars. D-Day plus 70 years. The fight for world democracy and human rights is still on. If we always have even a drop of the courage they did on June 6 seven decades ago, we’ll win and have honored their sacrifices. Patrick McCallister is a staff writer for Your Voice News & Views.

While the passenger train service would be privately owned, the company has requested an about $1.5 billion Railroad Rehabilitation & Improvement Financing loan from the Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration. If granted, it would be the largest loan of its type ever. The railroad administration is now drafting an Environmental Impact Statement on All Aboard Florida that will likely be published by the end of June. After it’s published, there’ll be a 45- to 90-day comment period. After that comment time, a final draft will be written, followed by the railroad administration’s Record of Decision. Conze said it’s important for the Guardians to get out information about All Aboard Florida, because the company has been opaque. “The things released by the All Aboard Florida people are not the complete story,” he said. More information about the Citizens Against The Train Fund is at www.theguardiansofmartincounty.com. February. In about four months, the group has garnered more than 14,000 electronic and paper petition signatures opposing All Aboard Florida. It also attracted Representative Patrick Murphy, D-Jupiter, along with commissioners from Martin and Indian River counties, and a South Florida radio personality, to speak at its first rally. That was on May 4. The Guardians issued a resolution in April calling on All Aboard Florida to move its proposed route to tracks owned by CSX Transportation. Those tracks run westward through Okeechobee toward Winter Haven. However, the company has emphatically said it won’t consider moving the route. “The passenger railroad will stay on Florida East Coast tracks,” Russell “Rusty” Roberts said at a recent forum sponsored by the Martin County Taxpayers Association. He’s the vice president of corporate development at Florida East Coast Industries. Roberts verified that there are talks between Florida East Coast and CSX about moving some of FEC’s freight runs to the western tracks. That could reduce the number of trains on the tracks that run through downtown Stuart.

PALM CITY — The Peter & Julie Cummings Library’s summer reading program will explode on Saturday, June 7, at 11 a.m. with some Mad Science. “To kick off the summer reading, we invited the Tyler STEM Academy,” Carolyn Smith, manager, said. “They’re going to be doing a great interactive program with the kids.” The Tyler STEM Academy is a Library Foundation of Martin County program started with a $100,000 donation from Clare and Molly Tyler. Mad Science of Palm Beach and Broward County is the Jupiter franchise of a science entertainment company. Susan Hellenschmidt, children’s assistant, said Mad Science puts on a great show with mesmerizing displays of startling science in action. Or, rather, the audience puts on a great show. “It’s a hands-on program, so it’s

have a central divider, 11-foot lanes, 5-foot bicycle lanes, 4-foot buffers, and 8-foot sidewalks from Mapp to High Meadows Avenue. The design is made to complement the segment of Martin Highway east of Mapp Road. When the expansion is done, the FDOT expects motorists will take about 15,000 trips a day for the first year on that segment of Martin. That’s expected to climb to about 33,500 trips a day by 2037. In a previous interview, Lisa Wichser, Martin County’s development review administrator, said that traffic is up on Martin Highway by about 40 percent between Mapp and High Meadows since the opening of the Veterans Memorial Bridge. Wichser said that motorists take slightly more than 16,200 trips a day over the new bridge. That’s far fewer than what the FDOT projected — about 25,800 trips a day over the bridge the first year it’s open. Wichser said west-

great,” she said. “The kids get to go up there and try out things.” The summer reading program has three parts: pre-elementary and elementary kids, middle and high schoolers, and adults. The themes this year are “Fizz, Boom, Read,” “Spark a Reaction,” and “Literary Elements.” Smith said children can head to the library to “Fizz, Boom, Read.” “We have a reading log that kids can pick up,” she said. “They’re to read 20 minutes a day. We give out prizes. This year, we’re giving out books.” Hellenschmidt wouldn’t get into detail, but said the library is lining up some pretty popular titles to give the young readers. Those who read for 30 days between June 7 and Aug. 9 will get up to four books, a special prize, and, Hellenschmidt said, a party “for everybody who finished and got their 30 days of reading.” That party will be on Aug. 9 from 2 to 4 p.m. The library is encouraging them to read about science, Smith said.

bound motorists hitting a bottleneck on Martin Highway at Mapp — going from four to two lanes — is likely dissuading many from using the bridge for now. Jeffers said Martin will remain partially open throughout the expansion project. “(Workers) can’t close the road,” she said. “They have to allow traffic on it.” Mapp Road improvements will likely get under way as Martin gets its work done, Kevin Freemen, Martin County’s community development director, said. “We’ll probably start sometime in 2015,” he said. Mapp is getting bicycle lanes and storm-water management improvements from Martin Highway to Martin Downs Boulevard along with service aisles to allow on-street parking on some segments. He said the county will try to coordinate work schedules with the state. “We’re very cognizant that we don’t want to cause a major logjam,” he said.

PALM CITY — General Nutrition Center has moved into Palm City. “It’s just living your life to your best potential and feeling good every day,” Al M. Paetzig, owner/ operator, said. Paetzig’s family owns GNC locations in Stuart and Port St. Lucie. It’ll soon open another in St. Lucie West. The family knows a lot about running a good store.

“The store in Stuart was voted the ‘GNC Store of the Year,’” Paetzig said. n mid-May, the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society came together to honor and celebrate the incredible young and upcoming talent in our community. Ten students, young musicians from St. Lucie, Martin, and Indian River counties were awarded $1,000 scholarships, courtesy of the Society. To tell you that we were excited to be able to offer ten students an opportunity to continue developing their style, skill, and performance abilities might be a slight understatement. All year long, our members work tirelessly to provide master classes, present performances small and big, and produce fundraisers to help ensure that jazz and blues -- two truly American art forms -- continue to burgeon on the Treasure Coast. This year’s scholarship award winners is an exceptionally

In addition to their skill with instruments and musical performance, many of those selected have donated large amounts of time sharing their love of music with others in the community by volunteering with local non-profit organizations and sharing their talents with individuals and groups which might not otherwise be exposed to such tremendous cultural enrichment and fun. because it’s the first year we’ve awarded scholarships to siblings - twins no less. Jennifer and Chris Ketcham not only each earned a $1,000 scholarship, but like all the scholarship winners, they also received a complimentary one-year membership to the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society, with all the benefits and privileges that come with being it. Lincoln Park Academy senior Jennifer Ketcham auditioned on the trumpet, while her brother Chris, auditioned on the drums and vibes this year. Their Lincoln Park classmate, Donovan Kryak, was honored for his skills as a pianist. Jensen Beach High School senior, Austin Newson, auditioned and received his scholarship for his prowess on the bass, and Rosemond Fabien of St. Lucie West Centennial High School wowed the Society’s members and audience on the trumpet. Pine School senior, Kevin Paul, auditioned and was awarded for his vocal, guitar, and piano talents. Indian River student musicians also made a great showing and received the coveted scholarships. Three students from Indian River Charter High School, Dasha

Gilmore (violin), Alex Campbell (bass), and Karen Borruso (trombone) were recognized by the judges for their exceptional talent and musicianship. Rounding out the top 10 winners is Vero Beach High School senior, Patrick O’Brien, who impressed the judges on the trombone. Each of the winners not only displayed incredible musical talent and potential but also high academic achievement and good citizenship, too. Students auditioned live with the pros who play at the Tuesday Evening Jazz Jams at the Sunrise Black Box in Fort Pierce and are judged based on their performance, skill, and ability to improvise and work with other musicians. Scholarship Award night is the night we all eagerly anticipate all year long, so it truly is the culmination of the year’s work for all of us at the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society. Join the Martin County Artificial Reef Fund Committee at the fourth Annual Lionfish Round-Up that coincides with the eighth Annual Reef Builder’s Tournament at the Twisted Tuna in Port Salerno. The event begins on July 11, with the Diver’s/Captain’s Briefing and the Round-Up will be held on Saturday, July 12. Cash prizes will be awarded for the most lionfish by a team and individual, as well as the largest and smallest lionfish. New this year we have added a “Lionfish Reward” which will pay $1 for every lionfish collected by a diver or team that is turned over to the tournament to be used for research or tastings. Currently this award maxes out at $250, but the committee is working hard to bring on additional sponsors so the reward can be extended. This tournament helps fund the artificial reef program in Martin County. For more information, visit www. mclionfish.com or call the Martin County Coastal Hotline, (772) 2211387.

Oh, and a shot at winning a GoPro video camera, too. The website will accept the book reviews from June 7 to Aug. 16. Adults can get into some “Literary Elements” this summer.

MARTIN COUNTY — Jake Sanders, founder and artistic director of Curtain Call Productions, has always thought outside the box. For the 2014-2015 season, he has selected shows that will challenge audiences to think about everything from marijuana to morality First up is “Reefer Madness,” running from Nov. 13-23. The show is a satirical view of the1930s movie that was a cautionary tale to the children of America about the dangers of marijuana. This musical comedy, written in 1998, has book, lyrics and music by Kevin Murphy and

Dan Studney. It is a tongue-incheek look at the hysteria caused when clean-cut kids begin a descent downward when they smoke marijuana and discover jazz and sex. The irreverent show features big Broadway numbers that include “Down at the Ol’ Five and Dime,” and the Vegas-style number, “Listen to Jesus, Jimmy.” The latter features Jesus Christ leading a chorus of showgirl angels. It hardly seems necessary to note that “Reefer Madness” contains adult language and content. The wonderful “Man of La Mancha” will be presented Jan. 15-25. Based on Cervantes’ “Don Quixote,” the show is a poignant

The show features songs such as “The Impossible Dream,” “Dulcinea,” and “I’m Only Thinking of Him.” This production offers new orchestrations and a fresh take on the classic show. The Florida premiere of “Hands on a Hardbody” will be presented March 19-29. Based on the documentary, “Hands on a Hardbody,” 10 hard-luck Texans compete for days on end for a brand-new truck. Only one can win the competition and a piece of the American dream. The show takes on the challenging issues of race, military depression and suicide and still manages to keep it funny. The show received several Tony nominations, including one for best original score, by Amanda Green and Trey Anastasio of the group Phish. is to generate conversation and thought, which is why we’ve scheduled the campy comedy ‘Reefer Madness’ to run the same month that we will be voting in Florida on medical marijuana. ‘Man of La Mancha’ makes the season as part of our new effort to revitalize classic works that are often under-produced. Additionally, it is a show about one man’s journey into madness, and we absolutely love to explore the darker side of things here. “With ‘Hands on a Hardbody,” we have a show that is brandnew, and we have the opportunity to do the Florida premiere of an incredibly well-written show that

manages to explore racism and military suicide in the context of musical comedy. Finally, ‘Spring Awakening’ is a contemporary classic, a rock show chronicling the sexual awakening of teens in 19th century Germany. It brings attention to what happens when sexuality is not allowed to bloom in a healthy manner.” It’s an ambitious schedule, but that’s what we’ve come to expect from Curtain Call.

MARTIN COUNTY — There will be an alien invasion when Camp Barn Theatre puts on the science fiction farce, “The Aliens are Coming! The Aliens are Coming!” by Tim Kelly. Campers will present the show Aug. 1-3. Camp Barn Theatre is open to youngsters entering fourth through 10th grades. The fourweek-long camp begins July 7 at the theater. Linda West, camp director and instructor, said that the month-long camp gives kids the opportunity to really work on a production. “Participants will experience the excitement of learning new skills, the importance of working as a team and the thrill of performing before a live audience,” she said. “Camp Barn Theatre is also designed to promote self-confidence and creative expression while teaching the basic tools of the theatrical trade. “Our mission is to encourage development of the young artists through the strict discipline if theater by exploring the many constituent parts that make up the performing arts. The camp will be a hands-on conservatory program where students study directly with established local and national theater professionals.” West noted that theater activ-

Young performer and director has new show at the Barn Shelley Koppel Staff writer

STUART — Nicky Wood has been performing for about 10 years. That’s not a long time, until you hear that he’s only 18. The University of Central Florida student is studying theater arts, but performing is not his only talent. On June 20-22, he brings his musical revue, “Welcome to Vegas,” to the Barn Theatre. Wood and his cast will present the program he is writing and directing. Yes, he’s also in the cast. Wood was home-schooled in Port St. Lucie and had dual enrollment at Indian River State College by the time he was 14. He transferred to UCF and spends part of the year in Orlando. Last June, he staged “Cast and Crew” at the Barn and followed it this past December with “Welcome to Manhattan.” “This is my 37th stage show,” he said. “It’s a musical revue. The goal is to bring all of the charm and spectacle of Vegas to the Treasure Coast. It’s two hours of sparkling spectacle and scintillating songs that’s sure to leave the audience tapping their toes. There will be music from Sinatra to Bobby Darin, Wayne Newton, Frankie Valli and Elvis Presley.” The show features a mixed cast of veteran performers and youngsters. Wood recently began giving private lessons in acting, singing, dancing and audition preparation to students at IRSC’s performing Arts Academy. Some of his students came to the “Vegas” audition and will appear in the show, even though this is not the music they know and love. Wood has enjoyed watching them interact

The writer and director noted that the production is full-scale. “The show is not just music,” he said. “I don’t like most music revues. This is a fully staged musical revue with sets, singing, dancers and over 100 sequined-covered costumes. The

female lead wears 16 completely different costumes. My costume designer and associate producer is Francesca Patten, a retired director from New York who grew up in the theater as her parents performed on international tours.” His cast includes some new names and some familiar ones to audience on the Treasure Coast.

New York City is my ultimate goal. I love performing, but I really, really love coming up with an idea, setting it in motion and creating art. “It’s the process of creating, changing, directing, and watching art come to life. Over the course of the four-week camp, students will work together creatively toward the common goal of producing a two-hour fulllength comedy production.” Each production is recorded by a videographer, and is complete with credits and other movie touches. “Parents have the opportunity to purchase it and they all do,” West said. “It’s really wonderful.”

By the way, did I mention The Hunter’s Grill has a full bar and a pretty decent wine list? They stock mostly California wines, which I like. But finally, Chef DuPont presented the entrees: The dish he placed in front of Mitch will be a feature on the new summer ala carte menu: A few bites of Lobster Ravioli, Honey baked Scottish salmon and the duck ala orange. All were cooked to perfection and had the taste of a high priced New York restaurant. Wonderful as they were, I let Mitch

have most of those delightful dishes while the pièce de résistance was delivered: my perfectly cooked filet mignon, prepared au poivre, served with julienned zucchini, yellow squash and carrots and parmesan potatoes. Au poivre is a French method of preparation in which the steak is coated with peppercorns and seared in a hot skillet over high heat. The peppercorns form a crust on the steak, which complements the flavor of, in this case, a fresh, hand-cut steak that was perfectly cooked to my mediumrare preference. Summer is here and so is the new menu at Hunters Grill. Packed full of value and flavor, Hunters Grill is a must visit at least a few times each month. We stopped in to enjoy the new selections. Immediately the Jumbo shrimp and Scallop Parpadelle caught my attention. Served in a wonderful collection of baby portabella mushrooms and asparagus with a light cognac cream sauce. It was heavenly. How the chef pulled off preparing the shrimp and scallops to now make it one of my favorite foods of all time, I don’t know. I’m guessing he learned a few things at the award-winning Hudson County Culinary Arts Institute in Jersey City, N.J., where DuPont studied prior to launching his 26-year career. We asked the chef to surprise us with the dishes he wanted us to sample, rather than ordering from the menu. The next course was a beautiful salad of field greens, goat cheese, slivered almonds (nice touch!), golden raisins, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and grated carrots, served with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing. Mitch got the wedge salad, a quarter head of iceberg lettuce with cherry tomatoes, crumbled REAL bacon pieces, red

Nancy Sailer Retires after 33 Years of Chamber Service The year was 1966, Nancy and Jack Sailer, with their three children, moved to Stuart, Florida to open the Holiday Inn. Jack was the Innkeeper and Nancy assisted at the front desk. Jack soon joined the Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commerce and eventually became a board member. He served as co-chair for the first Stuart Sailfish Regatta and Nancy worked on the judges’ stand. In 1981 she was hired as the chamber’s first office manager. Driven by her love of flowers, she formed the Beautification/ Community Improvement Committee, recognizing businesses that improved their property. She also worked with the city to develop two new parks, Hospital Pond and Menninger Park, and still helps the city maintain them. The committee was the first to participate in the DOT Adopt-A-Highway program. When Stuart Main Street was formed, Nancy served on the board as a representative from the chamber. Nancy and Jack, with two other couples, co-chaired the first “Dancing in the Street” event, which was a huge success. When the chamber built their new building on Kanner Highway, Nancy was in charge of the move from their small 750 square foot building into their 4,000 square foot first floor offices.

board meetings and coordinate the joint Transportation/Local Government committees. Sailer was elated to accept what she referred to as a “Dream Job”. The past twenty-five years Nancy has worked with community leaders and businesses to graduate 691 people from the LEADERship Martin County program. She states, “It has been so successful because of support from my boss and the alumni who coordinate the day sessions with me”. The list of graduates In 1989 Joe Catrambone was hired as President/CEO. As Exec at the Titusville Area Chamber he was part of a team that created Leadership Brevard County. He was interested in developing a LEADERship program in Martin County as well. Nancy was familiar with the program and requested to be considered as program director. Of course, she got the job! Nancy began the process by contacting local leaders, explaining the program and requesting they serve on the planning committee. The overwhelming response was positive. Everyone she recruited accepted and the rest is history! Nancy decided to retire fifteen years ago; however Catrambone convinced her to stay on a part-time basis to continue the LEADERship program, assist with

reads like a who’s who of decision makers in our county. LEADERship graduateS and participants refer to her as “Mom”. She has a tendency to brag about the difference her “kids” (LEADERship Grads) make in the community serving as leaders. She will continue to volunteer for the alumni and youth programs. Jack and Nancy will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary in October with their daughter, twin sons, their spouses, six grandkids and four great-grandkids. Special thanks to Stacy Ranieri, owner of The Firefly Group for sponsoring the May 12th Council of Chambers Luncheon at Martin Downs Golf Club. The special luncheon featured a presentation by U.S. Representative Patrick Murphy as he accepted the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Spirit of Enterprise Award. Ranieri is shown with (from left) Representative Murphy; Stuart/Martin County Chamber President/ CEO Joe Catrambone and Chairman John O’Brien, Gulfstream Aluminum & Shutter Corp.
