PALM CITY — The Women’s Prosperity Network, Treasure Coast Chapter, is celebrating its first birthday. “We have 60 members,” chapter founder and director Tasha Chen said. “We’ve had more than 180 women attend our events.” Chen explained that the network’s monthly meetings are minus something often expected: expert speakers pontificating upon subjects. With a room full of women, she said, expertise on just about any subject under the sun is already sitting there for the tapping. “The philosophy behind the Women’s Prosperity Network is

PALM CITY — It’s about people power. “We’re asking people to speak up for a particular project, the C-44 Project,” Gabriella Ferraro, communication and outreach coordinator for Martin County, said. The Martin County commission hopes two recent developments will revive interest in a social-media campaign the county started last year, Speak Up for the St. Lucie. In May, the Army Corps of Engineers started again releasing water from Lake Okeechobee that heads down the Okeechobee Waterway to the St. Lucie River. The released water, according to the county and others, has high levels of harmful nutrients that damage the estuary. The C-44 and Stormwater Treatment Area portion of the Indian River Lagoon-South Everglades Restoration Project are aimed at reducing those pollutants. However, the White House’s proposed 2013-2014 budget to Congress doesn’t include funding for the second phase of the restoration project, which could delay it until at least 2015, according to Ferraro. The project is in the first phase of construction in western Martin. That phase is
slated to be done by 2014. Erin Moffet Hale, press secretary for Representative Patrick Murphy, said the White House is awaiting completion of the first phase before requesting funding for the second. “During previous discussions, it has been explained that the reason for the project not being included in the President’s FY14 budget is because phase 1 of the C-44 project is not expected to be completed until mid-2014,” she said in an e-mailed response to questions. “Therefore, funding for the second phase was not included in this year’s budget but we have been assured that phase 1 of the project has the necessary funds already appropriated for its completion.” Ferraro said that about a year and a half ago, the commission asked county staff to tap social media to get folks raising concerns about the water releases to federal and state elected officials, along with the Army Corps of Engineers. She said the response was surprising. “It started with 200 likes in a week, and in two weeks it was over 1,000 likes,” she said. Today the Speak Up for the St. Lucie Facebook page has more than 1,300 likes. Ferraro said that has greatly amplified the

The county started the social-media campaign last year to get Martin and area residents involved in efforts to convince federal officials to reduce water releases from Lake Okeechobee that flow to the St. Lucie River. It expanded into getting the public to help document the water-releases’ damage. Haddox represents Palm City.

The Palm City residents got into the guns and shooting business earlier this year. “It was a foreclosed building the bank owned,” Debbie said. “It wasn’t in good shape. It wasn’t maintained. We bought it, we fixed it up, and we made it a viable part of the community.” That was along with adding 15 jobs to the area. Flo Howe, membership and events coordinator, said the award recipients are right to feel a bit overwhelmed. “It’s always a tough decision, because there are so many good members to pick from for each category,” she said.
The chamber has slightly more than 500 members, and typically draws more than 75 to events. The award breakfast drew more than 100. “We got 115,” Howe said. “That’s awesome considering we have 500 members. That’s awesome participation.” Member Peter Wernick was named Ambassador of the Year. He was quickly enthusiastic about the chamber. “I joined right away when I opened the doors,” he said. Another passionate volunteer at the chamber is Veronica Montoya, “The Coffee Lady.” Montoya owns The Coffee Shack in Stuart. The chamber named her Volunteer of the Year. Like Searle, and other award recipients, she was a bit flabbergasted and at a loss to explain why she’d receive the award over others. “I’m there every week,” she said. “I take work home with me if they need me to. I’m just one of many people who volunteer for that chamber.” Although stunned by the recognition, Montoya said it sends a message to others. “It was very exciting that your contribution to the chamber doesn’t go unnoticed,” she said. The chamber isn’t just about volunteerism. It’s also about recognizing those who make the Palm City area more attractive to perspective businesses and residents. Patti Kirk holds classes at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Family History Center in Palm City. The Church, also known as the Mormons, has the largest genealogical library in the world in Salt Lake City. Records are digitized and available to anyone wishing to use them. “The records are free and they go back hundreds of years, from all over the world,” Kirk said. They’re open to the public and they are gracious enough to allow me to teach there. They have films of records and the machinery to play the film. Director Don Herzig runs the department and they have eight or nine computers and shelves of books and films. Kirk is proud of the group’s Generous Genealogist program, in which she or another instructor offers a 90-minute free consultation. “We ask basic questions on the phone,” Kirk said. “We ask them what they know. We put it together and ask them to bring certificates, like marriage and death. We show them what we found. It’s a good start. They get so interested that they sign up for a beginner’s class.” Kirk said many of her students have been with her since she started classes several years ago. “They’re very dedicated,” she said. “They come because we have a good time. It’s not dull or boring. In our group, we have 30- ands 40-year olds. There’s an

PALM CITY — Genealogist Patti Kirk has traced her family back to 1505. They came to the United States from France by way of Canada. Her husband was adopted, but as she pulled back the layers of adoption, she was able to trace his family back to Scotland in 1510. They, too, came to the United States by way of Canada, a common migration pattern. Today, Kirk, of the Family History Researchers organization, teaches others to search for their roots. She gives classes in several counties, including Martin County at the Church of Latter Day Saints Family History Center in Palm City and in St. Lucie County at the Community Center in Port St. Lucie. Kirk’s work began as a hobby. “I started doing it while I was working,” she said. “It was a hobby and it grew. When I retired, I came to Florida to teach genealogy.” That first class in Palm City had eight students. Today, there are more than 200 members in Palm City and approximately 60-80 come to the classes held on the second and third Saturdays of the month. They pay a yearly membership fee of $15 and then $3.50 a class. “What we offer is education,” Kirk said. “I have created copyrighted genealogy classes. We teach the topics our students are working on.” Some of the resources students learn about are Passenger Lists, Immigration Laws, and Census Records. The 1940 Census has just become available, as records are kept confidential for 72 years. “Some of these people are looking for their great-grandparents,” Kirk said. “They may have been born in 1840. We go way back. The most popular countries (of ancestry) are England, Ireland and Germany. We have to stay on top of things. France has pulled online records and decided they would release them and charge for it. When you start researching internationally, it’s a little harder to do the work.” It is no coincidence that Kirk

Structuring work and correcting poor performance without micromanagement

icromanagers can take the best of things and turn them into a disaster. I found a website recently where a person had taken many of the great management quotes you have read and heard and converted them into how micromanagers would interpret them. Here’s some samples: “Leadership has less to do with position than it has with disposition.” — John C. Maxwell “Leadership has everything to do with position as it defines my income disposition.” — Micro-manager “Leadership is the wise use of power. Power is the capacity to translate intention into reality and sustain it.” — Warren Bennis “My leadership is the wise use of power. My power is the capacity to translate my personal intentions into career reality and sustain it.” — Micro-manager “Surround yourself with the best people you can find, delegate authority, and don’t interfere as long as the policy you’ve decided upon is being carried out.” — Ronald Reagan
Bill Hughes “I surround myself with lazy liars and favorites, delegate all the hard work to my scapegoats, and interfere every time anyone might become successful.” — Micro-manager So, how do we as managers take the appropriate balance between being involved enough to produce desired outcome and hands-off enough to allow our employees to grow and produce without our over-control of their activities? I use two three-fold methods of error/failure analysis and corrective action to allow for management without micromanagement and employee empowerment without loss of control. When a failure or error occurs in our office, I look to three main causes:

OUR MISSION We are here to provide our readers with completely unbiased news coverage. Fun and entertaining features about the communities in which they live. For our advertising partners we pledge to provide the most complete consultative and marketing programs possible for the best return on their investments.
If the employee lacked the proper training or tools, we see that the proper training is performed and the proper tools are obtained to prevent future recurrences of the problem. If we did not have a policy or procedure in place to take care of the incident, we get input of those involved (including the patient) and we establish a proper procedure or policy to address the situation. If the employee did not take the initiative to perform the task properly or was negligent in their performance, we enact our progressive disciplinary process to convey the employee’s error to them and to let the rest of the staff know that our practice’s value system deals with poor initiative and negligence very seriously. Beyond the error/failure analysis, I use another three-fold method of addressing problems which can be used to address individuals or groups that are failing in performance or not performing up to par. These are usually the type of problems that are not really errors, but those times where operational efficiency or patient service may not be performing at an optimum. When these type problems occur, I go through three steps with the employee or group. According to the employee, group or problem, things may be resolved at different steps. I meet with them, identify the problem and get feedback to make sure they understand the deficiencies. I then tell them that I expect them to resolve the problem. If the problem is not resolved after the first step, I again meet with them and give them two or three options to take to resolve the problem. If the problem is not resolved after the second step, I meet with them and inform them of how the problem will be handled since they have not been able to resolve it without my direct management of the problem. This approach to operational problems will do many things. First, it will let the employees use their special knowledge and

This will instill confidence and allow the employees to professionally grow. Getting involved and giving choices for them to pursue if they can’t resolve a problem still gives them the freedom to choose possibly the best path to take and also allows them to use their training and judgment to get through things. The last step of involvement, although it may seem punitive, helps in a couple of ways. First, it lets the employees know that sometimes things have to be set and determined outside of their realm and secondly, it lets the employees know that you are there to get just as involved as needed in the problems that occur in their jobs. Management without micromanagement can be a challenge to many and I can say that I struggle often with the line between the two. The above methods have served me well through the years and are not absolutes by any means. I do challenge you to attempt them or a variation of them at times and see how it can relieve some of your management headaches and also see how it can help your employees grow personally and professionally. Workers on the Veterans Memorial Bridge set stay-in-place (SIP) forms in May. After they’re set, crews pour concrete on top which becomes a bridge deck. An important ingredient to building a bridge is weather. If the concrete dries too quickly, it can crack and expose metal to corrosion. Most are calling the under-construction bridge the Indian Street Bridge. It’ll give Palm City and Stuart a second over-the-water connection. Photo courtesy of Rachael Wallace
BRIDGE from page 1 George Denti, project manager, said it’s become a frequent question why the anticipated opening date has been pushed back from spring to fall. Plans now call for its opening in November. “We get that question a lot,” he said. “‘What’s taking you so long?’” Well, Florida and its famously fickle weather has a lot to do with that. “Sunday night, we were going to pour a deck,” Denti said. “Concrete plant was on standby. My guys were on standby. We made a prudent decision to cancel it. The rain on the radar would have threatened the deck’s integrity.” Something as seemingly simple as pouring a spot of cement takes on titanic dimensions in bridge construction. A single deck — the surfaces cars travel over — on the bridge is 145 feet long, 115 feet wide. That’s 600 cubic yards of concrete, or 65 mixers’ worth. Crews poured two in May. “The slower concrete cures, the better,” Denit said. “If you cure it too quickly, it develops cracks.” In a previous interview, Denti said, “The kiss of death for any concrete structure is cracks.” Cracks allow moisture to reach the reinforcing steel girders and corrode them. As steel corrodes, it swells, which can generate more concrete cracks and speed a bridge to its demise. “Is it better to take one more day on the project, and make the bridge last 20 more years?” Denti said. Bridge engineers work with complex formulas to account for temperatures, humidity levels, and wind speeds, among other things, before doing certain work. Sort of like the old carpenter’s adage, “Measure twice, cut once,” only on a scale counted in tons and decades. The steel in the bridge, when it’s done, will
weigh 2,800 tons. That’s the same as the Space Shuttle ... times 34. The girders under the riding decks will measure 5.7 miles if laid end to end. They’ll be holding up about 28,000 trips a day. The Martin County Board of County Commissioners in 2011 voted to name the 3,100foot structure Veterans Memorial Bridge. Most folks are still calling it the Indian Street Bridge. The Federal Highway Administration is funding the $65 million construction through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The project was originally estimated to cost more than $120 million. However, due to the construction bust in 2008, the cost of building materials dropped significantly, and contractors generally lowered their bids. Construction started in April 2011. The bridge spans a portion of the St. Lucie River that is part of the Okeechobee Water-
way, a 1937 Army Corps of Engineers project that connected natural waterways to create a 152-mile shortcut across Florida. Rachael Wallace, public information officer for the project, said community interest in the project remains high. The website, indianstreetbridge.com, has had more than 5,500 hits since December. In January, the website had about 2,150 views. The number of views each month dropped after that, but in May the site still had more than 1,600 hits. “As we’re approaching the bridge opening, viewing the (aerial pictures) of each month is great for anyone to see the bridge coming together,” she said. “As we get closer (to finishing), people can see we’re closing the bridge gaps.” For information about group presentations, call (772) 283-4323.

PALM CITY — Steve and Cynthia Camp arrived to lead The Cross Church with lifetimes in music and a chance to start a school. Cynthia, who attended Julliard School of Music, had broken her wrist years ago. Not good for a violinist, but that took her from playing for orchestras to teaching music in public schools.

What does Dow 15,000 mean to you? T
his month, the Dow Jones Industrial Average hit a milestone, when, for the first time, it closed above 15,000. Of course, 15,000 is a nice, round number, and it sounds pretty big — but what does it mean to you, as an individual investor? Is it cause for celebration — or is it more of a “caution” flag? There’s no one simple answer to these questions. Since March 2009 — the low point of the market following the 2008 financial crisis — the “Dow” has risen about 130 percent. And while the Dow is just one index, it’s nonetheless an important measure of the market’s performance — which means that you were likely glad to see the 15,000 mark eclipsed and you’d be happy if the numbers just kept rising. However, as you’re no doubt aware, the market does not move in just one direction. Typically, declines of 10 percent or more — or “corrections” — occur about once a year. Unfortunately, they’re
not predictable. Sooner or later, the markets will indeed change course, at least for the short term. When this happens, don’t panic — corrections are a normal part of the market cycle. Still, you might feel like you should do something to cope with the downturn. But what? Here are a few suggestions: • Keep investing — Too many people, when faced with a market drop, decide to “cut their losses” and take a “time out” from investing. But that can be a costly mistake — had these investors bailed out of the market in 2009, and only recently returned, they would have missed a substantial part of that 130 percent run-up in the Dow. And when you invest in a down market, your dollars may actually go farther if the market rebounds, because you would have bought more shares at the lower prices. • Review your portfolio — It’s usually a good idea to review your portfolio at least once a year, and it may be especially important during those times when the

SPEAK from page 3 county’s efforts to bring attention to the restoration-project funding and water releases. “Our reach is in the tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, because of shares,” she said. Kate Parmelee, intergovernmental and grant coordinator, said the intention of the social-media campaign was not just to speak to the public, but to create twoway communication between people and government. “We asked citizens to share photos, especially after the releases,” she said. “We were trying to document the impacts. There were different stories we weren’t
hearing before, and hearing from people who won’t go to public meetings.” Additionally, the campaign’s Facebook page urged people to print, or pick up, signs that read “Speaking Up for the St. Lucie” and get photos of themselves with them at different areas. The signs have made their way into all kinds of locations, including House of Representatives and Senate office buildings in Washington, D.C. Among those pictured with one is Senator Bill Nelson at his Senate office. “This is our first social media campaign, and it’s been interesting,” Parmelee said. WOMEN from page 1 that as women, we’re all brilliant,” she said. “We’re so busy giving advice to others that we don’t give it to ourselves.” Palm City’s Jeannine Ferrara, owner of Thy Word Public Relations, said the network has given her an opportunity for creative collaboration she lacked. “The people attracted to this are sole proprietors, people in marketing, people like me working at home,” she said. ““What’s cool about the Women’s Prosperity Network, the monthly luncheon gives you a chance to sit at a table and have a board of directors for free.” Additionally, Ferrara said the group urges a behavior in women that men seem to naturally gravitate toward. “From what I’ve seen in working with both men and women in the commercial and faith communities, a man usually has three or four confidants,” she said. “They’re inclined to seek out mentors early on in their careers. Women for some reason don’t do that. They don’t consciously seek out people to advise them. The Women’s Prosperity Network fills that void.” The network started in Broward County back in 2008. Last year, Chen was launching a new business, motheranddaughtertrips. com, after selling her hair salons, and longed for a successful sorority she could learn from to iron out new-biz wrinkles. She wasn’t fully satisfied with other women’s groups she looked into. “When we network, traditionally, we put a façade on,” Chen said. “When we put that façade on, we don’t really grow. I went down to (a Women’s Prosperity Network) event in south Florida
Saturday of the month from 10 a.m.-noon. They are held at the Port St. Lucie Community Center, 2195 S.E. Airoso Blvd, Port St. Lucie, on the first and third Wednesday of the month from 1-3 p.m. Classes in both locations run from September to May.
and fell in love with it. They said, ‘We’re trying to start a group on the Treasure Coast and we guess you’re it.’” Chen made the necessary arrangements, and set out to find women. At the Treasure Coast’s inaugural meeting — June 16, 2012 — about 30 women showed up. Chen said the network’s slogan, “Be real, get real, achieve real results,” resonated among women along the Treasure Coast. “We have women that drive from as far as Vero (Beach), and as far south as Lake Worth,” Chen said. The meetings feature mastermind sessions: a topic is broached and small groups discuss it in personalized terms — their challenges, successes and stories. “What’s cool about women is we’re natural nurturers,” Chen said. “We’re not only given the chance to receive that from other women, but to give back.” Ferarra said a vow to keep all things confidential inspires a level of trust that allows her to open up at meetings. Additionally, she said that contact information of attendees is available to members. She said this comes in handy when facing new problems and remembering a woman three meetings ago faced a similar one. The chapter’s first anniversary meeting will be on Saturday, June 8, at the Monarch Country Club, 1801 S.W. Monarch Drive, from 10 a.m. to noon. Membership in the network is $200 a year. With it comes a number of online and other resources. Chen said membership isn’t required for attending events. Members and firsttime attendees pay $25 to attend meetings, which includes meals. Non-members pay $35. For information, visit wpnglobal. com/treasurecoast, or call (772) 286-8447.

PALM CITY — Friends and employees of Peter’s Hardware Center in Palm City were among the 500 walkers at the April 2013 Walk to Cure Diabetes - Treasure Coast event that raised more than $130,000. JDRF, formerly Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, presented the walk, which was sponsored in part by Peter’s Hardware. Despite threatening skies and a light rain, the participants didn’t let the weather dampen their spirits. Peter Wernick, owner of Peter’s Hardware Center, assembled a team to walk and his employees also collected donations at his store prior to the event. Wernick also initiated a T-shirt contest in which Palm City Elementary students drew designs related to the JDRF walk. The

winning design was featured on T-shirts worn by the hardware store’s team and the T-shirts also were sold at the store in the weeks leading up to the walk, which raised additional funds for JDRF. “It feels good raising money for a local community organization that supports children,” said Wernick. “I’m all about investing in children because they are our future.” Russell Schaffer chaired the 5K walk, which took place along Flagler Avenue in Flagler Park in downtown Stuart. Michelle Schaffer served as logistics chairperson and Reid Gaskin was the family chairman. Individuals and corporate teams walked, rollerbladed, biked and skateboarded. Even dogs on leashes walked and supported the cause.

CROSS from page 8 Christian and arts instruction. “We’re getting a lot of initial positive feedback from the community,” he said. California educator Laura Sharp will be the headmaster. Sharp taught in gang areas of Oakland, Calif. She’s finishing a doctorate in education through Grand Canyon University, along with teaching classes for the school. “The traditional lecture style classroom is not working,” she said. Sharp said that Mondays to Thursdays will be for academics at The Cross Academy. Fridays will be “arts intensive.” She said the school will feature classrooms that might not look like them to some. Students, she said, will have wide latitude in exploring how they learn best. “If they want to learn by sitting on the floor or in a beanbag, who am I to question it?” she said. Among other unusual teaching strategies, Sharp has had students turn on their mobile phones during class discussions. “I’ve had students text me the answers, because they’re into texting,” she said. Steve spent more than three decades in professional music, making 22 albums and getting numerous nominations and
awards. One of the songs he wrote, “Martin,” took a Grammy in the Gospel category for Best Single in 1985. Gospel Hall of Fame inductee Shirley Caesar performed the award-winning version of the song. Steve and Cynthia met in 2004 at a Maranatha Bible & Missionary Conference. Both were part of the musical program. They dated for a few years. The only thing that ever came between them was a couple states. Cynthia lived in Michigan; Steve in Tennessee. He ended up awkwardly proposing at a busy airport in 2009. She had to interpret his words for him. When time came for the big kiss, a cop yelled at him to move the car. They married in 2009, and moved to Martin County. At the time, The Cross Church had about 60 members. It previously had a much larger congregation. It’s grown to around 125 members, with new folks showing up weekly according to Steve. “We’re a church replant,” Steve said, referring to the common term for starting new congregations, “church planting.” He described the church as Baptist and “charismatic with seat belts.” Information about The Cross Academy is at crossacademyofthearts.com. The church’s phone is (772) 266-4339.

the rich heritage of the Florida Cracker lifestyle is still very much alive throughout our beautiful state,” said Nancy McCarthy, vice president of The Firefly Group. “This year particularly, as Florida celebrates its 500th anniversary, turning the page of the Ranches Calendar each month offers a glimpse into our state’s history and hope to future generations of Floridians that we can sustain such places.” The Firefly Group was also honored with an Image award and Grand Image award for its pro-bono production of the 2012 SafeSpace “Walk A Mile in Her Shoes” video. The video also earned an FPRA Judge’s Award for a public relations tool that achieves maximum impact with a minimum budget. The video was designed to increase awareness about domestic violence on the Treasure Coast while generating greater participation in the non-profit’s Martin County fundraising event. While informing viewers about the sobering statistics of domestic violence, the video also displayed the more lighthearted feel of the annual event by showcasing notable local men who took on the challenge of wearing red, high heels in support of SafeSpace and its mission. “The statistics around this silent pandemic are startling,” said Rob Ranieri, chief operating officer of The Firefly Group and co-chair of the Martin County Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event. “One out of every three women will be the victim of domestic violence in their lifetime. On average, four women a day are murdered at the hands of their intimate partner. Trying to make people more aware of this issue — and especially of the existence of SafeSpace in our community — is something we feel strongly about. The passion that our videographer Steve Martine of Steven Martine Films has about the Safespace mission is also evident in the final product he helped us to produce

SafeSpace announces Volunteers of the Year Local nonprofit recognizes its Volunteers of the Year for the three-county region FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
MARTIN COUNTY — Rebecca Beckett has given so much of her time to SafeSpace, a local nonprofit organization and the only domestic violence outreach center on the Treasure Coast, that many may have assumed she was a paid employee of the organization. On the contrary, Beckett is one of the many dedicated volunteers of SafeSpace who are focused on doing everything in their power to help victims of domestic violence. As a nonprofit organization, SafeSpace relies heavily on the year-round support of its volunteers in order to assist with its many programs that help victims and families affected by domestic violence. SafeSpace volunteers take on the responsibility of answering calls that come through the SafeSpace hotline, serving as
Crisis Intervention Court Advocates, planning events, hosting fundraisers, planning activities with the mothers and children at the two shelters, and managing retail operations at the Thrift Shoppe among many other important tasks. In April, Beckett joined nine other SafeSpace volunteers to be recognized by the organization for their tireless efforts in 2012. During the organization’s annual appreciation luncheon, Beckett was awarded the 2012 Douglass & Patricia Stewart SafeSpace Volunteer of the Year Award for the three-county region. Representing each county individually, Joan Smith, Mindi Fetterman and Barbara Creran were announced as the Martin County, St. Lucie County and Indian River County Volunteer of the Year, respectively. “I’m honored to receive the Volunteer of the Year award,” Beckett said. “As a survivor of domestic violence, I understand the importance of having somewhere

a loss, but it can help reduce the impact of volatility that can occur in a downturn. The Dow at 15,000 is certainly no minor event. And since stocks don’t appear too expensive compared to their earnings, don’t be surprised if higher milestones follow. But record highs can be quickly forgotten when the market falls. By being prepared for that day, too, you can help yourself continue to work toward your goals — even when the major market indices have, for the moment, taken a wrong turn. Elvis impersonator promises to get audience ‘all shook up’ Shelley Koppel Staff writer
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
MARTIN COUNTY — Darrell Dunhill didn’t set out to become an Elvis impersonator. “I started doing Elvis when I was an emcee for karaoke,” he said. “I didn’t even know I could sing. People said I sounded like Elvis and I was asked to do parties and graduated to fairs and festivals.” Dunhill, who has been channeling The King since 1994, has performed in Japan, Las Vegas and Memphis. The Treasure Coast resident, a hair dresser at Hair Masters in Stuart, will perform at
the Kane Center on June 15, and he spoke about how his second career has changed his life. “It’s been quite a ride,” he said. “It’s taken me to a lot of interesting places. For Japan, I sent promo material to an agent for an impersonator show in Japan. I found a job and did 150 shows in 60 days. That was four shows a night, six nights a week. “Elvis is extremely popular in Japan. I had no idea until I got there. A lot of them didn’t know he had passed away and a few thought I was Elvis. I had to tell the interpreter to tell them I’m not the real guy.” Dunhill said that Elvis knew
what set him apart. “I think Elvis said it best in a radio interview,” Dunhill said. “He said that he got lucky and came along at a time when the industry had no trend. He put together R & B, gospel and rock ‘n roll and got his moves from watching preachers. People were looking for something different. People loved it.” Dunhill said that he has noticed that audiences are beginning to diminish as fans grow older. “If not for the impersonators, I don’t think his legacy would be as big,” he said. “In 2004, I was

in Memphis for an international show. Graceland wanted to charge royalties (to the impersonators.) We all got together and said if it weren’t for us, you wouldn’t be selling records, pencils and jewelry. There are over 70,000 impersonators worldwide.” Dunhill said that his shows are for audiences from 7-70. It’s interactive,” he said. “A lot of Elvis impersonators don’t really move around. I never stop moving. I get down into the crowd and play with the crowd. Elvis was known for toying with the crowd. People that come to see the show get a lot more than an Elvis impersonator. It’s always a good time.” Dunhill uses the soundtracks that were arrangements Elvis used in concert or in the studio. “It’s exactly the way it was done,” he said. “They’re hearing the original back-up singers. You never get a lip-synch. It’s always my voice.” Amazingly, Elvis Presley recorded some 1,500 songs, and Dunhill performs some of the lesser-known ones as well as the hits. There’s also some trivia and maybe even a prize or two, The performer makes three costume changes, reflecting the three Elvis eras: the ‘’50s, ‘60’s and ‘70s. All of the jumpsuits he owns were made from the patterns Elvis used. They are expensive; the cheapest costs more than $1,300. The attention to detail has made Dunhill a popular entertainer. Wives often say that they had to drag their husbands, but the husbands leave smiling, and often shake Dunhill’s hand. “It’s a great Father’s Day gift,” he said. “For the man who has everything, give him a ticket to see Elvis.” At the end of the show, Dunhill remains until the last fan is gone, signing photographs and taking pictures with fans. “I have a great time,” he said. “I love what I do. I guarantee any-
one who comes out will have one heck of a good time.”

Commissioners approve lease with Coast Guard; boaters to benefit from agreement with government FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
At the May 14 meeting of the Martin County Board of County Commissioners, commissioners unanimously approved an assignment of the St. Lucie Inlet Boating Safety Association’s existing lease with the County to the Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 59 of Stuart. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is a unique force that carries out an array of responsibilities touching almost every facet of the U.S. maritime environment. The overarching mission of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, which operates under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as
part of the U.S. Coast Guard, is to contribute to the safety and security of our citizens, ports, waterways and coastal regions. The Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 59 will operate out of the existing building at Sandsprit Park. Sandsprit Park amenities include a very popular public boat launch site located near the St. Lucie Inlet. The lease assignment is a great benefit to Martin County by maintaining a Coast Guard/Homeland Security presence near the inlet which improves safety of the boating public and community at-large. Board Chair and District 4 Commissioner Sarah Heard commented, “This agreement is a great thing for the safety of our waterways and community and reinforces the need to fund and maintain a navigable St. Lucie Inlet.”

For this reason, five volunteers were presented with the annual SafeSpace Thrift Shoppe Volunteer of the Year award, including Hildy Saulnier, Joann Kelly, Camille Passino,
Bonnie Trunk and Cora Meyer. Carissa Grone, a member of the nonprofit’s Board of Directors, was also recognized with the Board Volunteer of the Year Award for her time and dedication as a board member. “The effort and dedication from our entire roster of volunteers has played a vital role in saving and changing lives of those affected by domestic violence throughout the Treasure Coast,” said SafeSpace CEO, Jill Borowicz. “Words cannot express how proud I am to have these particular award winners as community advocates
