PALM CITY — Sometimes building a bridge is like pushing wet concrete 500 feet uphill through a narrow pipe. Hey wait, that’s exactly what’s next for the crew constructing the Veterans Memorial Bridge to join Southwest Martin Highway in Palm City to Southeast Indian Street in Stuart. “If the concrete isn’t consistent, it can clog the pipe, and then we’re screwed,” George Denti, project manager, said. The highly technical term for how fluid that concrete is as it makes its way through a narrow pipe is “slump.” Slump is a measurement of fresh concrete’s viscosity, or fluidity. “That has to be just right for it to work,” Denti said. Oh, and the technical term for that pipe it’s going through is “slick line.” A number of things affect how much slump the fresh concrete has. For example, the heat of the pipe affects it. The reason the crew has to push wet concrete uphill through a narrow pipe is because the center, or main, span is ready for its decks, the surfaces cars ride on. Denti said that because of complicated dynamics, the main span

PALM CITY — The idea lab at the Peter and Julie Cummings Library is turning 1, so grab the tablet computers. It’s time to celebrate. “When it started out, it was just a space,” Carolyn Smith, branch manager, said. “The idea was to get people to create things there.”

And create they have. For example, idea lab volunteer Shelby Baillie, 15, recently took top spot for Florida in the Collaborative Summer Library Program’s Teen Video Challenge with her 90-second film, “Finding Beneath the Surface.” She created much of the video with equipment, help and images she got at the idea lab. The idea lab will have its birth-
