Chane to protect Social Security and Medicare
For the love of dance

TREASURE COAST — There are lots of issues to talk about in the 18th Congressional District. Democratic congressional candidate Jonathan Chane would like to discuss all of them, but keeps a laser-beam focus on two: Social Security and Medicare. “There are a lot of seniors in the district who are concerned about their Social Security and they need a strong voice in Washington,” he said. The 42-year-old is an attorney who’s active at his synagogue. He said both his career and spiritual life give him a strong sense of how important Social Security and Medicare are not just to seniors, but to the community. “I’m born and raised in Palm Beach County and I’ve been here my entire life,” he said. He added that the two federal entitlement programs affect people who greet him at area restaurants and those who even stand in his living room. “These are friends and neighbors and people in the commu-

Commission nods to land swap PALM CITY — The Martin County Commission gave its nod to a land swap with the South Florida Water Management District. The unanimous decision was at the commission’s regular meeting July 21. The county will get 38 acres along All-American Ditch, on
the southern part of Southwest Mapp Road for its stake in Allapatah Flats alongside Southwest Martin Highway near Indiantown. The water management district gave its nod to the agreement about two months ago. “All-American Ditch is the No.
1 most polluted water that flows into the South Fork of the St. Lucie River,” commissioner John Haddox, Palm City, said after the meeting. “We get the opportunity to fix the county’s worst

PALM CITY – Attorney William Frederick (Rick) Crary has roots deep in Martin County. His grandfather, Evans Crary Sr., came to the area in 1927. He became a judge, Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives and a state senator. He also founded the law firm Crary-Buchanan, one of the oldest on the Treasure Coast. Rick Crary has practiced law at the firm since 1980. He is also a writer and student of Florida history. Crary has collected articles he wrote for Indian River Magazine, added new ones and edited the whole into a book called, “The Treasure We Call Home.” During a visit to his office, Crary spoke about how the family and the county shaped his life. Crary is a third-generation resident of Martin County, although some of his childhood was spent in Washington, D.C., Mexico City and Gainesville. The family returned to Martin County when he was 6. Golden frog leaps onto local luminary Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

PALM CITY — Kristin Gomes, Palm City resident, is used to seeing it, and working until she gets it. A one-of-a-kind gold pendant that’s a symbol of the U.S. Navy SEALs is among her rewards. The pendent features a frog with ruby eyes. SEALs, of course, are the famed “frogmen,” elite amphibious fighters. “When I think of the Navy SEALs, they are the symbol of the strongest, toughest out there,” Gomes said. “Not everyone can be a SEAL. I wear that as an honor (to them).” Gomes won an auction for the golden frog created by Diamonds by Terry for the Aaron Vaughn Memorial Frogman Swim, June 29, which benefits Operation 300. “My fiancé has been very active with Operation 300 for years now,” Gomes said. “I went (to the event) with him.” SEALs can be proud to spot Gomes wearing the frog. Like them, she’s a friend to adversity and winning. She’s a Florida and national bodybuilding champion who competed in the Internation-
al Federation of Body Building. Gomes took a state figure title in 2004, and a national one in 2006. Her competitors worked hard to get those titles for themselves. “Competing is very difficult,” Gomes said. “I accomplished all this while focusing on my career. I’ve been in banking for 19 years.” Vaughn, a former Stuart resident, for whom the swim is named, was among 17 SEALs who died in the August 2011 shooting of a Chinook helicopter in Afghanistan. In all 38 died in the shooting, including five members of the Navy Special Warfare support personnel, three Army Rangers, two members of the Colorado National Guard, two members of the Air Force Pararescue, and an Air Force combat controller. Additionally, seven members of the Afghan National Army commandos and an interpreter died, as did a military working dog. Vaughn was married to Kimberly and they had two young children. His father said the idea of Operation 300 was born shortly after Vaughn’s death.

Finding Customer Service
I
am once again taking the liberty to refer back to my early days at IBM. This was when my business career started and where I was taught a code of behavior in conducting business. Those business ethics, principles and philosophies have stuck with me for many years and have been instrumental in the development of my professional career and all that I have accomplished. Tom Watson Senior founded the IBM Company in 1914, and like any ambitious entrepreneur, he wanted his company to be financially successful. He also wanted the company to reflect some of his personal values, knowing that those values would contribute to his success. Those values represented a keystone in the foundation on which the company was built and were referred to as The IBM Basic Beliefs. They were (1) Respect for the individual, (2) Best possible service to the customer, and (3) Excellence and superior performance must be pursued. While it has been over a 100 years since the company’s founding, these commitments remain at the heart of the company’s operation, and are so revered and encompassing that every action and policy has been directly influenced by them. Isn’t it a shame that in America, when we get good customer service we are surprised? The business delivery systems have changed so dramatically with the Internet and the drive for improved efficiencies and reduced costs that business now is con-

When was the last time that you called a company and spoke directly to a company representative without going through the ABCs of voice mail? When was the last time when you finally did get through to a real live person, you had a clear and understandable exchange? This past weekend, an old friend flew into West Palm Beach. He had made a reservation for a car rental through a very popular Internet site. When he arrived at the airport, he was told that he had to travel to another location to pick up his car. He taxied to the other location and upon his arrival, he discovered that the rental car company location was closed. The next day he returned to the designated location only to discover that the automated kiosk was broken.

Still no car. He then proceeded to the rental company location at the airport. You guessed it, this so-called No. 1 rental car-company would not provide a car, and my friend was told that he had to call the Internet discount provider to straighten out the mess. After much effort to locate the phone number, he was placed in a queue and instructed to leave a call-back number with a promise that he would be called in 24 minutes. It was closer to an hour when he finally received a call back from a customer service representative located in Philippine Islands. It was no surprise that the person behind the counter could not help him and he had to depend on someone at the other end of the phone thousands of miles away. After 45 minutes on the phone and after a great deal of miscommunication due to the language barriers, he was unable to change the pickup location. Finally he gave up the reservation and made a reservation at a competing rental car company. Throughout the protracted and unpleasant experience, the representatives continued to apologize for the inconvenience yet failed to deliver any degree of customer satisfaction. It seems that the new approach for customer service is to provide the follow-
Long before the Community Redevelopment Agency and its Neighborhood Advisory Committees existed, Port Salerno residents had a vision for their community. We did many projects ourselves, but we achieved much more because of our Community Redevelopment Area, CRA. Back in the ‘90s, we started a Crime Watch with Forrest Yingling, our Community Oriented Policing officer, and with the help of County Code Enforcement, Waste Management and Keep Martin Beautiful, we had a major village cleanup. We were just getting started. With the help of Barbara Hogan, Mary Ann Meyers, Donna Dupuy, Elmira Gainey and our
ing recording; ”This call may be recorded for quality purposes.” Outstanding service is what brings the customer back to do more business. Voice recognition systems, recorded conversations, call centers located on the other side of the globe and apologies are not improving the experience for the customer. While costs may be reduced, customers will always be lost if the encounter is unpleasant. Anyone regardless of size can emulate the IBM way. It does not matter what your business does, the size of your business and the nature of your business. Finding outstanding customer service and delivering quality and superior performance are worthy goals. And…they are not terribly difficult to achieve. They are necessary ingredients in the delivery of quality products and services and contribute greatly to achieving business success. It doesn’t necessarily cost…it actually pays. It is simply the way people behave. Today’s businesses all have a website and the following simple ideas may help in accomplishing these worthy goals. Start by providing the names and phone numbers of your sales and support personal on your website. It also is a good idea to provide a physical address as well as directions. The home screen should also display the hours of your business operation. A 24-hour emergency contact number may be appropriate. Clearly describe your products and services and

By 1997, we were fighting to keep A1A only two lanes to save our small businesses and our sense of community. In 2000, the county formed our Neighborhood Planning Area and adopted our CRA Plan, which is our vision put on paper. Our road project gave our businesses on-street parking and stopped stormwater from draining directly into the Manatee Pocket. A restaurant was built, others added more seating, and more jobs were created. Since then, we have used our tax increment financing, TIF funding to get grants to lay sewer lines

Our historic areas are such an important part of Martin County’s identity and attractiveness. Just think about the improvements you’ve seen in Jensen Beach, Port Salerno, Indiantown and the City of Stuart over the past 15 years that have made these places destinations for visitors and for residents. This happened because of their Community Redevelopment Plans, which were put in place by residents to prevent these historic places from sliding into slum areas. As a result, they add to the special quality of life we have in Martin County. Even more important, they also add to the tax base by attracting businesses within the urban services boundary. There’s a reason that our Comprehensive Growth Management Plan gives first priority to CRA

capital projects above all other capital projects. The CRAs, which were formed according to state and county laws, offer the best plan for fighting urban sprawl by keeping businesses and people within our downtowns and inside our urban services districts. The funding for CRAs comes from only a portion of the increase in property taxes from the residences and businesses within the CRA boundaries. Eliminating TIF funding will not solve the county’s budget problems. TIF revenue from all our CRAs combined amounts to about $1.8 million a year, only a drop in the bucket toward our $300-plus million backlog. The Old Palm City Mapp Road project is distinctive in that it also solves one of this area’s most perplexing issues — stopping the sheetflow of water from the west side of the road that floods the properties on the east side of
Mapp Road. Those flooded properties result in saturated drainfields and failing septic tanks that drain directly into the St. Lucie River. Mapp Road is slated for paving within two years anyway, so it makes absolutely no sense to spend the same amount of money for paving, when it also could create stormwater storage if the CRA plan is adopted. Please support the continuation of the Community Redevelopment Areas and the important work done over the past 15 years by the volunteers on the Neighborhood Advisory Committees, who have helped make Martin County an even more special place to be. Let them finish their plans, and demand that the Old Palm City plan for Mapp Road be returned to the county’s capital projects for 2016. Sincerely, Don S. Bell

PALM CITY — Renee Rivas, resident of Palm City, has been learning the beautiful art of belly dance since she was 4 years old and for the past eight years she’s has come to love the art form. “I love to belly dance because I love to perform,” said Rivas. Rivas has been learning from a master dancer named Yvonne Dudley, who has been keeping the tradition of belly dance alive and well on the Treasure Coast by a local dance troupe who train together at Totally Belly Dance School in Fort Pierce. Yvonne has been training students in the art of belly dance on the Treasure Coast since 2007. Her students are very active in the local community performing shows at various venues. They performed at Tradition Square for the 2014 Sungrove International Festival hosted by Sungrove Montessori School in March 2014, and have performed shows for some local assisted living facilities in the area in order to bring art and culture to the community. Dudley currently dances regularly at the Olympic Taverna in Jensen Beach and has danced at Spiros Taverna and Tutto Fresco in St. Lucie West. She has been dancing professionally for approximately the past 15 years and it has not only become a professional outlet for her now, but a passion. “I recommend belly dancing to everyone who wants to try it, at any level and any point in their lives. I know nurses, doctors, scientists and other professionals who dance with me, looking for a creative outlet they don’t get in their day to day professional lives,” she said. Dudley first started her training in this area under the direction of her first teacher Dorothy Beneu, who goes under the stage name of “Setareh.” Setareh set her roots down in the Treasure Coast of Florida back in 1985 and started dancing at the Port St. Lucie Community Center within the first month of arriving in Florida from the San Francisco Bay Area. She had several influential teachers since first starting her belly dance training back in the early 1970s, but the most well-known instructor she
studied under was Jamila Salimpour. Salimpour was considered the “mother” of American Tribal Style in this country and having the ability to study under Salimpour was a special privilege. Dancing is also a huge passion for her and in integral part of her life. “Studying Middle Eastern Dance and gaining the technique to be able to dance is who I am. This is my destiny. Setting the dancer within me free has made me who I am . I dance to celebrate my life. I dance to give thanks to God for the gift. I dance to defeat any negative ailment trying to come on my body. I dance because I must.” Belly dance is an art form that offers an outlet of artistic expression and can be enjoyed by women of all ages, shapes and size. In the Totally Belly Dance School, the youngest student, Rivas, Palm City is 12 and the oldest student is Paulette Leighton of Stuart, who is 69. Leighton has been dancing for five years and she shares a love of the music with her husband Don, who is a drummer. She feels that belly dance provides her with healthy, regular exercise and enhances her mental awareness by learning choreographies. Leighton enjoys the social aspect of the dance, performing in the Treasure Coast and she is constantly meeting creative people who she refers to as her “dance sisters.” “Don and I get to share and enjoy together so this creates a unique closeness in our relationship. Also, my husband and I get to spend time with people who are happy and love what they do, which is a very positive experience.” The first belly dancing performances emerged in the United States in 1893, when a promoter known as Sol Bloom put together a troupe of over 50 dancers at the Chicago World’s Fair in unorthodox, uncorseted attire. Some credit Bloom for coining the term “belly dance.” The dance was a shock to conservative Victorian sensibilities. The name of the show was “The Streets of Cairo,” and featured authentic dancers from the Middle East. The most historically known dancer from this event was known as “Little Egypt,”

pollution flow in the St. Lucie River.” The county aims to construct a storm water treatment area on the Mapp property. As it is, the swale — which runs along the southern border of Jock Leighton Park — empties into the St. Lucie without treatment. Deborah Drum, the county’s manager of ecosystem restoration, said that the county plans to build an All-American Ditch storm water treatment area with about $1.4 million in grants in hand for it. The county has applications for another $670,000 in grants. The proposed storm water treatment area will cost about $3.4 million to build. Construction could start in 2016. “We anticipate that the project that we’re going to build will reduce the total phosphorous by about 69 percent, nitrogen by about 48 percent, and suspended solids by 91 percent,” Drum said in a telephone interview. The county and district jointly purchased Allapattah Flats in 2008 for about $4 million each. It had been a ranch with a lot of water redirection. Drum said natural water flows have been progressively restored. Additionally, the county and district added trails for equestrian, bicycle and pedestrian use. Gabe Margasak, spokesman for
“We get the opportunity to fix the county’s worst pollution flow in the St. Lucie River.” John Haddox Martin County Commissioner the water-management district, said Allapattah Flats will remain open to public recreation. He said the district will have two deed restrictions on the Mapp land — the county must use it for storm water treatment, and, if possible, it must be open to the public. Some of the county’s storm water treatment areas look more like parks. For example, the Old Palm City West STA — the storm water treatment area nestled between Cornell and Butler avenues by 35th Street — is split between fresh and brackish water reservoirs by a limestone dam that’s made to appear like a walkway. Most storm water flows into the southern reservoir, then seeps through the limestone dam that removes some impurities into the northern reservoir. That reservoir gets the seeped water, along with some ground water. The park-like appearance of the Palm City West STA is deliberate, Drum said. She anticipates the All-American STA will have a similar appearance.

CRARY from page 3 Florida and the University of Florida College of Law. Still writing and history remained close to the heart of the English major. “I have been journaling since I was very young,” he said. “I lived in Europe for a while and journaled. I went at 16 and thought I was Huck Finn. I always intended to be a writer. I didn’t always intend to be a lawyer, but it was always one of the options. I never baited just one hook. I was going to work for an import-export company in Germany, but I didn’t like the way (the boss) treated his employees. When I came back here, I was building my practice, but I viewed everything as research material for possible writing later.” In the 1980s, career and family occupied his time, but in the 1990s, he started writing in earnest. “I wrote a novel and short stories on the weekends,” he said. “I’d given up on the idea of getting anything published. I wanted to get better and better. There were periods where I wrote every day at dawn. When (the opportunity to write articles) came along, that I could write something and get it published, it was a happy surprise.” The articles came about after Crary gave a tour and talk about Crary House in 2010, the home in

which his grandparents lived for decades. That led to an appearance on Janie Gould’s radio show, “Floridays” on WQCS to discuss research he had done on Gov. John Martin, the man for whom the county is named. Gould suggested that Crary do some articles for Indian River Magazine and the writer and historian found an outlet to tell the stories about the people and places that shaped him and the region. “When I started writing the articles, I always had it in mind that I would put them together in a book,” Crary said. “I tried to make them interlocking, with themes and characters that reappear. I hoped it would lead to a book that would capture the flavor of the region.” Crary chose Gov. Martin because, while he gave his name to a county, little was known about him. “It started out that no one had tried to track down anything about this guy,” Crary said, “He was at the pinnacle of one of the most dramatic moments in Florida history, the soaring land boom and crash and yet nobody knows anything about him. It was an opportunity and I had the curiosity.” Crary found the Internet an invaluable research tool, but he also found information using less advanced technology.

nity,” Chane said. The candidate is married and has three young children. Chane is the fourth Democrat in an increasingly high-profile congressional race that’s swelling with candidates and campaign contributions. So far it’s drawn three other Democrats and seven Republicans. On the Democratic side, Stuart’s John “Juan” Xuna, and two Palm Beach County commissioners are running to keep the seat blue, along with Chane. The commissioners are Melissa McKinlay and Priscilla Taylor. Xuna is the only Democratic candidate the state lists so far. “Politico” is reporting that selfmade millionaire Randy Perkins — founder and owner of a debris-removal service, AshBritt — is positioning to enter the race with up to $5 million of his own money as an opening bet. On the Republican side, Martin County School Board member Rebecca Negron, St. Lucie County Commissioner Tod Mowery, former State Representative Carl Domino, along with Brian Mast, Paul Spain and Rick Kozell have all announced candidacies. A seemingly out-of-the-blue newcomer to the Republican primary race is Carla Spalding. The Florida Division of Elections lists Domino, Negron and Spalding on the Republican side, so far. Others may join the Republican primary field, such as Martin County Commissioner Doug Smith. The district — which covers all of St. Lucie and Martin counties, along with a sliver of Palm Beach’s northern side — is one of only 10 in the nation the “Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report” puts into its pure toss up category for 2016 The Cook Partisan Voting Index is a measurement of how strongly a United States congressional district leans toward the Democratic or Republican Party, compared to the nation as a whole. The district has a Cook Partisan Voting Index, or PVI, of R+3. Florida’s rating is R+2, R for Republican. Florida’s 22nd District, just south of the 18th District, has a D+3 rating, D, means Democrat. Any Cook PVI score between R+5 and D+5 is counted as competitive. In essence, the election will be highly competitive. Incumbent Patrick Murphy, Democrat, easily crushed Domino in the 2014 elections with about 20 points separating them. Murphy is vacating the House of Representatives seat to run for Senate. Domino beat a swollen Republican field in 2014 to run against Murphy in
Jonathan Chane the general election. Nevertheless, Murphy only narrowly took the district in 2012. Only about 2,500 votes separated then incumbent Allen West and Murphy in that election. That year Mitt Romney led President Barack Obama by 4 points in the district. Between St. Lucie and Martin counties, there are about 106,000 registered Republican voters. Democrats claim 99,300 registrants. Another 75,700 voters registered in minor parties, or without affiliation. In recent years, Democrats and Republicans have been dripping away, while unaffiliated and third-party registrants are inching up. Many candidates will seek to qualify by petition. Vicki Davis, Martin County’s Supervisor of Elections, said candidates for the 18th Congressional District who want to qualify by petition need to gather 4,854 signatures by next year. She said signers are free in primaries and general elections, 2016, to vote for candidates other than those they signed qualifying petitions for. A petition signer is only helping a candidate qualify for a run without having to pay the filing fee, 6 percent of the annual salary of the office sought. The current salary of a rank-and-file member of Congress is $174,000. It’s been that since 2009. Those who don’t collect the needed signatures would have to pay nearly $10,500 to qualify. Chane’s website is www.jonathanchane.com.

“In the months that followed, his wife, one of her biggest concerns was who would teach (the children) what her dad taught her,” Billy Vaughn said. “My daughter came up with the idea to start a camp for little boys and little girls who lost their dads in the military.” That camp operates in Martin County, just south of Stuart. It pairs about 100 children of service members who died in combat with mentors every year. The name Operation 300 is from one of Vaughn’s favorite stories — the Battle of Thermopylae. In 480 BCE King Leonidas of Sparta was part of a vastly outnumbered group of Greeks who defended a narrow coastal pass against an invasion by the Persians under King Xerxes I. After two days of intense but hopeless fighting, the Greeks left a suicide force of about 1,500 to hold Thermopylae, the Hot Gates, long enough for other forces to gather against the Persians. The most famous of the suicide force being 300 Spartans. Legend holds that when the Persians demanded the Greeks’ weapons in surrender, Leonidas shouted, “Molon labe!” “Come and take it!” That’s the SEAL spirit that resonates with Gomes, who’s a business banker at BankUnited. “I’ve had very high dreams for
myself. Every goal I set out for myself, I work until I attain it,” she said. Gomes added, “I have the utmost respect for the SEALs and all of the men and women who serve our country.” Terry Rieger, the creator of the pendant, said Operation 300 approached her for a donated item to auction. “They were frogmen, so I said, Let me think about it for a while,” Rieger said. Hard to say for sure what happened next. It could be Jungian synchronicity, said to denote ‘meaningful coincidences.’ It could be Vaughn himself sent Rieger a message. It could be a sheer fluke. “The next night I was taking a bath and there was this frog on my wall and I said, ‘That’s perfect,’” Rieger said. So, she recreated that frog in gold with ruby eyes. Gomes said youths, particularly girls, can take her story and make it theirs. The 16-year Martin County resident said to take the spirit of self-discipline and determination that it takes to be a SEAL and make it yours. “I followed my choice to be an athlete while maintaining a career,” she said. “When you set your mind on something, it takes hard work and perseverance, but it’s so worth it when you set out a goal and accomplish it.” A golden frog on her is proof of that.

Martin employment holds steady MARTIN COUNTY — Employment usually gets a little lazy during the summer on the Treasure Coast sending a few more folks looking for work. But, from May to June Martin County saw no change in the employment number this year. Tim Dougher, executive director at the Business Development Board of Martin County, said an increase in manufacturing has offset the county’s usual summer drop in hospitality jobs. “I had a company call that’s hiring 10 new people because of a contract,” he said. The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity released its monthly jobs report Friday, July 17. Martin’s unemployment rate held steady from May to June at 5.5 percent, not seasonally adjusted. The state’s seasonally adjusted rate for June was 5.5 percent, down from May’s 5.7 percent. Seasonal adjustment is a statistical tool economists use to track employment progress account-

ing for variables, such as tourist seasons. Florida does seasonal adjustment only for the entire state in its monthly reports. From May to June last year, Martin saw unemployment rise from 6.1 to 6.3 percent. The state dipped from 6.3 to 6.2 during the same time. Martin is part of an improving employment picture for the Treasure Coast. St. Lucie and Martin form the Port St. Lucie Metropolitan Statistical Area, MSA. The area had a dip from 6.2 percent unemployment in May to 6.1 in June. The MSA had a 5.7 percent unemployment rate in April. In April, Martin County came in with a 5 percent unemployment rate. St. Lucie was a point higher than Martin, at 6 percent. Dougher said that manufacturing on Palm City’s western side, such as the Sand’s Commerce Center, is poised to expand employment even more. He mentioned PAC Seating Systems. “They continue to get new contracts, and they do the framework for (seats on) private and larger aircraft,” Dougher said. “They’re hiring.”

CRARY from page 11 “I went to Jacksonville, where Martin was mayor,” Crary said. “I used the microfilm at the public library.” Some of Crary’s pieces deal with the famous, like Grover Cleveland, who fished in Stuart at a time when it lacked basic amenities and Lewis Selznick, who wanted to make Stuart Hollywood East. There are also tender pieces about his grandmother, Talley McKewn Crary, a Southern belle from South Carolina, wife of a politician, who nurtured the curiosity of a young boy. “She’s somebody who shouldn’t be forgotten,” Crary said. “My grandmother was one of the most entertaining people. The dichotomy was she privately thought she was shy. With me, she could say anything.” She shared her recollections so vividly that it felt like they were mine. She was my guiding star. I thought that maybe, through my research, I could come up with memories of the past and share the, and try to make the history I care about come alive.” His grandparents were very friendly with actress Frances Langford and her husband, Ralph Evinrude. Langford threw a lavish party for Talley Crary on her 90th birthday. “In the 1950s, when Frances was a big star, she paid for her mother and my grandmother to take the train to Hollywood to meet the stars. When they came back, there was a celebration at the train

I listen to the music. Research takes the longest, but it’s the most fun. When I wrote about the 1715 fleet disaster, I visited the McLarty Museum. Everybody always thinks about the treasure. I was wondering about the people that disappeared. I walked up and down that beach. All my life, I’d walked on the beach and never knew anything happened here.” For Rick Crary, much of his life is bound up in his family’s history. He attended the University of South Florida because both of his grandfathers had roots in Tampa. Working at the firm his grandfather founded is another tie to the past that gives him pleasure. “I like carrying on the tradition of my grandfather, since he started the firm,” Crary said. “It’s something that’s lasted for generations.” Giving people memories that last was a goal in writing the book, as well. “The same way my grandma gave me memories, it’s nice to give all the people who moved here memories we can share. Everyone comes from somewhere.” Rick Crary’s book, “A Treasure We Call Home,” is available at Amazon.com., the Stuart Heritage Museum, the Elliott Museum and the St. Lucie County Regional History Museum.

Meridian Marina & Yacht Club Going on Bahamas Fun Run FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
TREASURE COAST — Palm City’s Meridian Marina & Yacht Club is leading the flotilla to Port Lucayan, Bahamas, Aug. 7 to 10, for the Bahamas Fun Run. The flotilla gives captains the opportunity to traverse the approximately 70 miles from the Treasure Coast to the Bahamas with dozens of friends. Once there, the group will stay at the Grand Lucayan Resort. “We’re coordinating the trip free of charge,” K.C. Traylor, communications coordinator, said. “People will have to pay for their room and boat slip.” The boats will depart about 8 a.m. It’s about a 2.5 hour trip. “All you have to do is give us your name and size of the boat,” Traylor said. “It’ll basically be hop on your boat and enjoy a weekend in the Bahamas. You do not have to be a member of our marina.” There’ll be a mandatory captains
meeting Aug. 4. at 6 p.m. There’s more. “Something else we’re doing this year is a lecture series,” Traylor said. The lectures are free of charge. On Oct. 14, at 6 p.m., there’ll be a talk about in- and offshore fishing. On Nov. 18, there’ll be one on how to prepare a boat for selling. The marina has offerings for folks who don’t want to park their boats there fulltime. “We offer a social membership that gives you access to all the activities we do,” Traylor said. Normally that’s $175 a year, but those taking the Bahamas Fun Run will get the first year free of charge. One advantage of the social membership is having a place to put craft when hurricanes are coming. Meridian Marina & Yacht Club is at 1400 S.W. Chapman Way, Palm City. For more about the trip, call (772) 221-8198. Check it out on Facebook, or visit www.meridianmarina.com.

DANCE from page 8 who stole the show. Americans quickly became intrigued by the exotic dances and rhythms, which led to belly dance popping up on the silver screen in Hollywood several years later in the movie “Salome”, It was at this time that dancers began to wear the signature costuming of colorful and glittery attire that is worn in cabaret and Oriental style dancing . Belly dance is enjoyed throughout the world and is taught in almost every country, right down to our Treasure Coast. It offers a community of friends for women of all ages and walks of life, who find joy in music and dance movement. It creates a sense of empowerment in women and builds self-confidence through artistic self-expression and self-discovery. It is also a impact weight bearing exercise that is suitable for all ages and helps in the prevention of osteoporosis in older people. Movements include torso isolations, which help improve flexibility and are healthy for the spine. It is a great form of exercise and an outlet for socialization. For more information on classes and upcoming events in the community through the Totally Belly Dance School visit www.

Her students are Apryl Franklin, Paulette Leighton, Justine Vega, Renee Rivas, Don Leighton, Elizabeth Petrell, Yvonne Dudley, Jessica Jacobs, Frances Tomlison, Margie Putnam and Vicki Cruz.

Free movies return to Lyric STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
STUART – After a construction hiatus last summer, free movies have returned to the Lyric Theatre. In true Lyric fashion, these screenings are events. On Aug. 8-9, the classic movie musical, “Guys and Dolls” will be featured. That would be great, but the Lyric has added an amazing twist. After the screening, the Lyric’s artistic director John Loesser, son of “Guys and Dolls” composer Frank Loesser, will hold a talkback (an informal discussion after the performance) about the show that made its debut in 1950, the year John Loesser was born. He has called the show “his illegitimate brother.” Of course, the movie “Guys and Dolls” is based on the Broadway hit. It, in turn, came from Damon Runyon’s short stories. The movie starred Marlon Brando as the gambler, Sky Masterson; Frank Sinatra as his associate, Nathan Detroit; Jean Simmons as Sister Sarah, the saver of souls; and Vivian Blaine as Adelaide, the poor woman who’s waited years for Nathan to put a ring on her finger. When the film came out in 1965, it won two Golden Globes and received four Oscar nominations.
It is the score that makes “Guys and Dolls” soar, with favorites including “Luck Be a Lady,” “Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat,” “If I Were a Bell,” and the wonderful “Adelaide’s Lament.” Over the years, John Loesser has seen the production grow from its original to the film to London’s West End. Of his ‘brother,’ he says, ‘Guys and Dolls’ and I have shared our lives for the last 65 years, and I love sharing fun highlights and stories about its impact on the world. It’s fun for me to talk about the movie because of a few stories that I have and actual memories of when we were in Las Vegas filming. There were the problems my father and Sinatra had and how Brando and Sinatra dealt with each other. It’s great fun to talk about my Broadway brother. We’re both the same age and we’re still around.” To hear the stories, be there on the 8th or 9th. On Aug. 15-16, the documentary “Woodstock” will be screened. The famed documentary is 46 years old and recounts that festival in upstate New York that came to symbolize the counterculture of the 1960s. This screening will feature a talk back with Barry Levine, the still photographer for the film, his wife, Linanne Sackett, author of “The
