PALM CITY — For Lauren Maunus, the catalyst for her concern about nutritional labeling and allergy awareness in the public schools was a personal experience. “I almost lost my baby sister when she was two,” Maunus said. “She had a small particle of cashew and went into anaphylactic shock. We had no idea she was allergic. Her face swelled up and her throat was closing.” Rachel Maunus was given epinephrine and survived that attack, but it inspired Lauren to campaign for better labeling of nutritional and allergy information in school food programs. “I’ve worked for four years to create guidelines through the state of Florida and now nationally,” she said. “I’ve been collaborating with the legislature and agencies to encourage school districts to provide allergy and nutrition information for all items offered in the cafeteria. “I’ve helped work with a company to develop software that

PALM CITY — New students at Hidden Oaks Middle School will get high-tech language arts starting this school year.
“In all of our sixth grade language arts classes, at all of our middle schools, students will be able to access their curriculum, their content and their digital resources through (the Internet),” Tracey Miller, executive director of instructional services at Martin
County Schools said. The district is rolling out the Laptop Initiative. Literally rolling out. Sixth-grade classrooms will have laptop carts this year. During class, the students will use laptops. “It’s not about taking the tra-
