PALM CITY — George Denti is a pretty happy man lately. Since April of 2011 he’s been busy building the Veterans Memorial Bridge, what a lot of folks still call Indian Street Bridge. Denti is the project manager. “We have completed all of the most complex and difficult work,” he said in a recent phone interview. “Everything from here is downhill. Among other festivities, folks will be able to walk on the bridge to take in a simultaneous antique-car and boat parade. Dedication festivities will launch with a 5k run at about 7 a.m. MCM Timing and Results, Jensen Beach, is organizing the

TREASURE COAST — The Treasure Coast Food Bank is moving into bigger and better digs. The Fort Pierce charity is the largest hunger-relief organization on the Treasure Coast, said Judy Cruz, CEO. “We serve over 100,000 each week that live on the Treasure Coast,” Cruz said. “They struggle with food insecurity and don’t know where their next meal is coming from.” The charity, which turns 25 this year, is swapping its 10,000-square-foot building on 25th Street for a 35,000-squarefoot food facility on Angle Road. The charity purchased the property from Adams Ranch. “We got it at a really good price,” Cruz said. “We’re hoping to be in there by the end of September.” Additionally, September is the

MARTIN COUNTY — St. Lucie County commissioners are in the final stages of finishing a draft requesting Gov. Rick Scott step in and save the Indian River Lagoon by declaring a state of emergency in the area. “We need to send the governor a message,” St. Lucie County Commissioner Chris Dzadovsky said. A copy of the draft was sent to the Martin County Board of County Commissioners with the hope they will be on board and also approve the draft. Dzadvosky said he expects the draft’s final version will be approved by the commission sometime this month. Commissioner John Haddox, who represents Palm City, said he has already read through it, saying it was “well prepared.” If another commissioner doesn’t request the item to be heard, Haddox said he will. “It will send a strong message to the federal government of the severity of the discharges and condition of the lagoon,” Haddox said. The draft requests the governor consider issuing an executive order and other powers available under law, to activate all available state and local emergency and relief resources to protect the Indian River Lagoon and the St. Lucie Estuary. Although polluted discharges from Lake Okeechobee have lessened in recent days because of dry weather, the billions of gallons already dumped into the water has practically killed the lagoon, the

draft states. “Forty-seven thousand acres of sea grass have been killed to date in the Indian River Lagoon since 2010, which far exceeds any documented or remembered events in terms of geographic scale, bloom intensity and duration,” the draft says. “It is alarming because sea grass is an indicator of the lagoon’s health, a food source for manatees and a nursery, refuge and a place of forage for a variety of fish and other marine life.” Another concern, the draft notes, is how hazardous the water has become to humans. “This runoff is causing a public health threat as microcystis aeruginosa, a single-celled blue green alga, or cyanobacterium, has proliferated in the lagoon to form dense blooms, which produce multiple toxins, including liver toxins, as well as neurotoxins,” the draft states. What would a state-issued state of emergency mean for the area? Patrick Gillespie, press secretary for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection explained in an emailed statement last week action could be swift. “If a state of emergency is declared, the public is alerted or warned of an imminent or actual threat,” Gillespie wrote. “Executive orders can suspend rules and statutes for permitting, though the department quickly issued a permit within its rules last week to cut a gap in (the) Tamiami Trail near Broward and Miami-Dade counties to improve water flow. Work on that started this week by

IRSC’s business incubator program helps aspiring entrepreneurs get started Staff writer

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

MARTIN COUNTY — Palm City’s Allen Atkinson had a great idea after the 2004 hurricane season. He turned that idea in a now-patented shutter design. He did some research and found out that there are many potential buyers for that unique shutter design in Florida and the Caribbean. Great. Got an idea. Got a patent. Now what? “I really didn’t know which way to turn and I needed to get an investor,” Atkinson said. “I had everything set to go, but was short on funds.” Atkinson chanced upon his answer. Indian River State College’s Virtual Incubator. Tom Kindred Jr., business incubator coordinator, said it was clear from their first meeting that Atkinson has an unusually good opportunity to build a successful manufacturing business in Martin County that could employ about 20 to 25. The incubator will help him. “A business incubator is basical-

Allen Atkinson ly a comprehensive business assistance program that helps startup and early-stage firms with the goal of improving their chances of becoming sustainable companies,” Kindred said.

r e m m Su Sale!

Atkinson is in the incubator at the IRSC’s Dan K. Richardson Entrepreneur Development Institute in Fort Pierce. Other Martin entrepreneurs have the opportunity to work with the restructured incubator at the college’s Chastain Campus in Stuart. Elizabeth Gaskin, provost, said the school has had a business incubator in Martin since 1999. However, until recently it was off campus. “That’s a big impression we want to make; it’s not an ancillary service of the college,” she said. “It’s really part of the college.” Gaskin said the Martin incubator is now seeking client companies. It can have about 12. Businesses could be in the incubator program from months to years, depending on their aims and needs, Gaskin said. “We’ve got calls coming in all the time. As soon as we have someone we think we can help, our doors are open,” Gaskin said. To get into the incubator program, a young business or hopeful has a lot of work to do. Kindred said oftentimes entrepreneurial hopefuls approach him for incubator services prematurely.

“Not everybody’s ready for an incubator,” he said. “We start the process of having an initial meeting.” He explained, “We have what I call a fierce conversation regarding their business idea and concept. If we see some viability in their idea, we write it up and give it to a committee.” The committee, too, will do what Kindred called “a drill down” into the business idea and plan seeking potential pitfalls. He said declined entrepreneurs and hopefuls learn what they need to rethink and many return with improved plans. There’s a reason for that. “Eighty-seven percent of businesses that graduate out of an incubation program are still in business five years later,” he said. The commonly cited business failure rate is 30 to 40 percent in the first year. Kindred said incubators provide numerous services that keep young businesses from making the mistakes that lead to failures. Additionally, they often have extensive contacts with the business

run. After the 5k, dignitaries such as county commissioners will ceremonially dedicate the bridge. “We have a lot of interest in the event — the dedication event,” Beth Zsoka, public information officer, said. “We’ve started putting information on the web site for people interested in the car show or race.” The website is indianstreetbridge.com. The bridge might not be opened right after the dedication ceremony. It could take a few more weeks to finish for opening to regular traffic. However, Denti said by about the end of October, there should be no more gaps in the bridge and a person could walk from one to the other end. Last month crews were pushing wet concrete 500 feet uphill through a narrow pipe to pour decks on the center, or main, span. “What I call our 900-foot island in the sky,” Denti said. Because of complicated dynamics, the main span decks had to be done before the adjoining ones. “The logistics of the main span is one of the most complicated parts,” Denti said in a previous interview. Concrete trucks arrived at the Stuart side of the bridge and poured their loads into a pump truck. The pump truck pushed the concrete into about 500 feet of a narrow pipe — about 6 inches wide — at a pressure around 50 pounds per square inch. The concrete made its way against gravity up the completed portions of bridge, and then spanned part of the St. Lucie River to the center structure. The pipe ended at a distribution devise with a long swing arm. It’s called a “spider.” Workers used the spider to guide concrete to where it needed to go. The complicated procedure was further complicated by a very wet summer. Something as seemingly simple as pouring a spot of cement takes on titanic dimensions in bridge construction. A single deck — the surfaces cars travel over — on the bridge is 145 feet long, 115 feet wide. That’s 600 cubic yards of concrete, or 65 mixers’ worth. Bridge engineers work with complex formulas to account for temperatures, humidity levels, and wind speeds, among other things, before doing certain work. Sort of like the old carpenters adage, “Measure twice, cut once,” only on a scale counted in tons and decades. Critical to constructing a bridge is curing the concrete correctly. If it cures too quickly, moisture can penetrate it. “The kiss of death for any concrete structure is cracks,” Denti said in a previous interview. Cracks allow moisture to reach the reinforcing steel girders and corrode them. As steel corrodes, it swells, which can generate more concrete cracks and speed a bridge to its demise. The Veterans Memorial Bridge is a 100-year design. That is, if done correctly, it should be at least 100 years before it needs major maintenance. “Concrete continues to harden forever and ever,” Denti said in the recent interview. “It never stops getting harder. The only thing that deteriorates that is the steel corrodes inside it and expands and it cracks.” And he said that’s what crews worked sometimes painfully slow to prevent. As work progressed, the completion date was pushed back a few times, from summer to fall this year. The Federal Highway Administration is funding the $65-million bridge construction through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The project was originally estimated to cost more than $120 million. However, due to the construction bust in 2008, the cost of building materials dropped significantly, and contractors generally lowered their bids. The Martin County Board of County Commissioners in 2011 voted to name the 3,100-foot structure Veterans Memorial Bridge. Denti said it seemed more likely that the bridge would eventually be removed than replaced. He said it’ll likely still be standing hundreds of years from now. “With a bridge of this quality, they become obsolete before they need repairs,” he said. “My grandkids will have jet packs. They won’t need no stinking bridge.”

On Thursday, Aug. 29, Port St. Police along with Stuart Police and the Martin County Sheriff’s Office arrested Justin M. Carreiro (DOB 1-28-74, 214 S.W. Milburn Circle, Port St. Lucie) for burglary, criminal mischief, resisting officers and outstanding warrants for grand theft and fraud. Carreiro’s crime spree began on Aug. 3, while he was working as a waiter at Bonefish Mac’s Restaurant, 662 S.E. Becker Road, Port St. Lucie. Between Aug. 3 and Aug. 11, Carreiro, while working as a waiter, would add an extra “0” to the tips he was receiving from customers. Carreiro was fired after the management from the restaurant discovered what he was doing. Management for the restaurant tried to work with Carreiro and arranged for him to pay back what he stole from the customers. After Carreiro failed to follow through with payment, Police Detectives secured warrants for his arrest on the charges of grand theft and fraud. Carreiro eluded police until Aug. 28, when he contacted Bonefish Mac’s wanting his final check in the amount of $2.93. Carreiro sent his girlfriend to pick up the check that evening. Coincidently, Bonefish Mac’s restaurant was broken into during the early morning hours of Aug. 29. The suspect entered the building through the roof then broke into the office of the restaurant and tried to crack open the safe. Attempts to break into the safe failed and the suspect left the restaurant. The would be thief was familiar with the restaurant’s lay out, because surveillance video showed the suspect covering the cameras with a shirt, towel, and even opening up an umbrella to block the view of the camera. INCUBATOR from page 5 and investment community. Once a business has cleared the hurdles of getting into an incubator, they have credibility with investors, Kindred said. He said a group of investors recently met with some of the school’s incubator businesses. “Our venture capitalists came onto campus, and we had three make hour-and-a-half presentations,” Kindred said. “It was our own version of ‘Shark Tank.’ But it wasn’t a TV show; it was the real thing. Literally our people were in front of the venture capitalists for an hour and a half.” Kindred said he couldn’t discuss individual results of those meetings. Additionally, Kindred said Atkinson came to the incubator a few months ago with extremely detailed product and marketing research and analysis — the sort investors like to see. Atkinson, 66, has entrepreneurial experience. He started, grew and sold a business in New York before moving to the area in 1981. Kindred predicted that he’ll catch investors’ eyes. “Will Allen (Atkinson) be in the incubator long?” Kindred said. “Probably not. Six months, eight

But, he believes in the near future Palm City will have a plant manufacturing his patented shutters. “I can see it going,” he said. “I see no reason it wouldn’t. I see a vast, vast market.” Kindred said he’ll talk to anyone in the entrepreneurial cycle from nascent concept to early-stage business and offer tips and direct them to services at IRSC. “Incubation is a big city benefit,” he said. “Now we have an incubator right here. Take advantage of these resources. Don’t feel you need to go it alone. An incubator can reduce the costs of failures. People get out there and get excited about a new business and put their life savings into it. You don’t have to do that anymore.” Gaskin said she was unsure how many businesses have entered and graduated from the Martin incubator. She said some records are in disarray and being reassembled. Joe Catrambone nonprofit sector called “Chamber For Good.” We are vigilant in protecting our businesses’ abilities to conduct commerce on a level playing field. In other words, we attempt to protect against egregious legislation hampering businesses while supporting positive legislation for business. We maintain a strong relationship and enjoy a great rapport with the Florida Chamber of Commerce and our Legislative Delegation. We are active supporters of the Business Development Board and many times assist them in their efforts to create jobs in Martin County. I could go on but won’t. So many times we are asked, “what does a chamber do?” We answer the best we can at that moment but never adequately. I now have a written answer. Joe Catrambone is CEO of the Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commerce.

I took the time to review my calendar and the website for events, committee meetings, the Adult & Youth Leadership programs and other functions we were responsible for. Admittedly, I know we offer many networking opportunities to our members, however until they are documented and totaled I didn’t realize just how many. To summarize, from October 2012 until August 2013 we held 34 breakfasts, 32 of which are no charge to our members, 12 monthly luncheons, 11 Business After Hours, three trade shows, two Leadership graduations (adult and youth), our annual Installation Banquet and Operation Thank You. We conducted in excess of 30 various committee meetings, participated in five Council of Chamber functions, sponsored and hosted the Annual Treasure Coast Legislative Conference in Tallahassee and held three New Member receptions. Not included are the many ribbon cuttings conducted by staff and our ambassadors, nor are the several seminars we hosted. During that period, we’ve published our Resort & Business Guide and our annual area map. We also maintained our website www.stuartmartinchamber.org, while conducting the daily operation of the chamber, including answering dozens of calls and tending to visitors every day. MARTIN COUNTY — Michael Roberts, President of the Road to Victory Military Museum in Stuart has announced that Todd Harris, owner of Crown Car Care and Crown Collision has been named to the Board of Directors. “Todd has been a strong supporter of the (museum) for the past three years and we felt he would be a great asset to the Museum,” Roberts said. Crown Car Care has been a major sponsor of the Stuart Air Show and continues to support the November annual event with in-kind sponsorship and financial support. All proceeds from the Stuart Air Show benefit the museum. The museum has a collection of military history and artifacts that is displayed in an historic building in Memorial Park, courtesy of a partnership with the city of Stuart. The Road to Victory Military Museum is located at 319 Stypmann Blvd. in Stuart and is open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For further information, contact (772) 334-2990 or colonel@specialforcesus.com In 2011, Crown Car Care repainted and completed a partial restoration of a MIG fighter plane that had been donated to the museum as well as a WWII era TUG that came with the MIG donation. “Todd’s knowledge of automobile mechanics and his partner Mark Smith’s artistry with design and automobile paint have been a huge help to the mechanical inventory of the (museum),” Roberts said. Harris has also donated and raised money for Honor Flight of Southeast Florida, an organization that Roberts, the Road to Victory Military Museum and the Stuart Air Show are closely involved with. In 2010, Crown Car Care built a replica of a part of the nose art of the Memphis Belle, originally featured on a B-17 bomber. WWII veterans signed the surface of the piece, which is now a part of the Road to Victory Museum. In 2011, the team created a completed a full-size scale model of the fuselage of the famous P-40 Flying Tiger aircraft featuring the iconic shark teeth nose art. The artwork was displayed at The Living Legends tent sponsored by Crown Car Care. In November 2012, Harris donated, with help from other businesses, a Ford Windstar to Doug Winterhalter, a 34 year-old veteran who served 10 tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. The van was outfitted with new tires and paint, a complete engine tune up and repair and military artwork on the hood. Crown Car Care will once again be a sponsor of this year’s Stuart Air Show on Nov. 2-3. Todd has just announced that his business will once again donate a vehicle and supplies to a deserving veteran who lives in Martin County. The vehicle will be donated on Saturday November 2nd at the Stuart Air Show. Crown Car Care and Crown Collision, LLC, has opened a new auto repair location at 712 S.E. Dixie Highway, at the southeast corner of Dixie Highway and Martin Luther King Boulevard in Stuart.

the South Florida Water Management District.” The lagoon, which generates an estimated $3.7 billion a year for the Treasure Coast, supports 15,000 full- and part-time jobs and provides recreational opportunities for 11 million people per year. It’s also the most bio-diverse waterway in all of North America, boasting more than 4,000 plant and animal species, including manatees, oysters, dolphins, sea turtles and seahorses. Indian Riverkeeper Marty Baum

said a state of emergency should have been declared months ago. “These discharges have absolutely wrecked the biodiversity in our end,” Baum said. “The biodiversity in all of North America is now moot. It doesn’t exist.” Jim David, director of St. Lucie County’s Mosquito Control and Coastal Management Services Department said it’s dire the governor issue a state of emergency declaration. “If this were a billion dollar oil spill, the Coast Guard would have been here the next day,” said David, who has proposed cleaning the lagoon using booms, which are used to clean oil spills.

MARTIN COUNTY — Mary’s Shelter recently donated eight cribs to Martin County PPEC (Prescribed Pediatric Extended Care), a medical day care center for special needs children with complex and fragile medical, developmental and technology dependent needs. “Thank you to Mary’s Shelter for supporting Martin County PPEC and the families we serve,” said Martin County PPEC Administrator Evelyn Duah. “The cribs are a great new addition to our nursery.” Martin County PPEC collects donations for the families of medically-fragile and complex children who often struggle financially to purchase basic items like diapers and clothing due to expensive medical bills. Donations of food, clothing, diapers and more are greatly appreciated. For a complete list, visit the Wish List tab on Facebook at http://www. Facebook.com/MartinCountyPPEC. “The Martin County PPEC staff see the struggles of parents of special needs children daily, but the most pressing concern is finances,” Duah said. “Frequent trips to the doctor’s office and specialists along with medications on top of essentials like diapers can be devastating to a

family’s budget. These donations help to meet basic needs when the families just can’t afford them.” Mary’s Shelter of the Treasure Coast is a nonprofit organization that provides services for pregnant women and their babies who need suitable housing or lack favorable family relationships. FOOD from page 3 bank’s Hunger Action Month. Food banks and pantries typically are short food after the summer months and have to replenish their supplies for the holiday seasons. September is a make-orbreak time for them. “The people we serve are in more need during the summer time,” Cruz said. There are a number of reasons for that. Children are home from school, which increases the number of meals families must prepare. Many families also face higher childcare costs during the summer. Additionally, on the Treasure Coast, unemployment typically bumps upward during the summer. This lowers the number of food and cash donors, and increases the number of recipients. “We struggle every year,” Cruz said. “It’s our busiest time in the summer months.” The bank is a member of the Chicago-based Feeding America. The organization used to be named America’s Second Harvest. The local food bank has about 200 “partner organizations,” Cruz said. That is various food pantries and feeding programs it distributes food to. House of Hope, Stuart, is one. “I think a lot of times people don’t understand the difference

from a food bank and food pantry,” Elizabeth Barbella, CEO, said. “The food passes through a food bank and goes to a pantry and then to the public.” House of Hope has four distribution locations in Martin County. “We’re the second-largest food pantry on the Treasure Coast,” Barbella said. Cruz said most of the food the Treasure Coast Food Bank distributes is free to the receiving agencies. However… “We have a handling fee on certain items,” Cruz said. “It’s up to 18 cents a pound. We cannot charge more than 18 cents a pound on any item; that’s the rule of Feeding America.” The charge is to help defray the expense of refrigeration and freezing. Additionally, receiving organizations pay some fuel charges. Cruz said of the food bank’s $13 million annual budget, less than $100,000, is from receiving organizations. Additionally, she said that few of them could have the food donations and storage capacity needed to assist the number of people they do without a food bank. “If Treasure Coast Food Bank wasn’t here, they wouldn’t be here either,” Cruz said. Barbella, also, said it’s difficult to run a large food pantry without a reliable food bank. “There’s logistical issues around

www.YourVoiceWeekly.com

one pantry, unless you have a warehouse,” she said, and added, “They can warehouse the massive quantities of food.” House of Hope averages giving 35,000 to 50,000 pounds of food a month. Barbella said on average it’s helping 5,000 to 7,000 a month. The goal, however, is to help those recipients become self-sufficient. “Food is often the portal,” Barbella said. “It’s the reason you came for help. After we get you fed, we try to figure out why you’re chronically hungry.” The reasons for food insecurity are varied, Barbella said. What’s always part of the reason, however, is lack of education about or control over some area of life. Barbella said that as House of Hope gets to know clients, it’s able to help them get into needed services. “There’s a difference between feeding people and fighting hunger,” she said. “We believe we’re fighting hunger with our wraparound services.” Treasure Coast Food Bank, which does some direct giving to recipients, also aims to help those with food insecurity identify and alleviate causations. Among its offerings is Your Plate Nutrition, Education, Wellness, Lifestyles Outreach Center, a life-skills training program. Cruz said participants must

attend training sessions and meet with skilled volunteers able to mentor them. She said about 600 participants have gone through the Feeding America pilot program since it started in 2012. The organization is gathering data about the programs success. Cruz said the anecdotal evidence is that Your Plate is helping a lot of folks end the cycle of chronic huger. “It gives people a different perspective on themselves,” Cruz said. “It’s been a great experience to see these people come out of their shells to see they do have value. A lot of these people don’t feel that way — that they have value.” The food bank recently participated in the United Way of Martin County’s Day of Caring, Saturday, Sept. 7. It had a mobile food pantry set up on Miami Avenue in Stuart. Among those picking up food was Sean Vincent and his 10-year-old son. They live in Hobe Sound. “We’re just staring over again,” he said. “We came from Ohio with the promise of a job, a house.” Vincent is a 20-year welder. He said the job and housing fell through shortly after he arrived. He’s been hunting for work, and doing small jobs along the way.

FOOD from page 18 Not enough to make ends meet, however. He said House of Hope, and others, have been helping him. “We’ve been surviving off things like this,” Vincent said. AT&T sponsoring Drive 4 Pledges Day Sept. 19 As part of the It Can Wait anti-texting-and-driving movement, AT&T is urging people to share their commitment to never text and drive with their families, friends, neighbors and co-workers on Drive 4 Pledges Day, Sept. 19. Individuals can sign up at ItCanWait. com to get resources that will help them share their commitment on social media and personalize the movement on the streets of their communities. Aiming to create a social stigma around the dangerous habit of texting and driving, Drive 4 Pledges Day will focus on getting individuals to become advocates of the It Can Wait movement and help spread the word about the dangers of texting behind the wheel. Individuals are encouraged to do things like change their social profile photos and banner to It Can Wait graphics, and share

their personal pledge stories using the hashtag #ItCanWait. Advocates are also encouraged to host pledge drives and distribute posters in their schools, workplaces and neighborhoods. All materials, such as graphics and posters, will be available for download from ItCanWait.com. The It Can Wait movement is making a difference. One in three people who’ve seen the texting while driving message say they’ve changed their driving habits1, the campaign has inspired more than 2.5 million pledges never to text and drive, and the recently launched “From One Second To The Next” documentary (https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ BqFkRwdFZ0) has received more than 2 million views since Aug. 8. The It Can Wait campaign was started by AT&T in 2010 but has grown into a movement, with Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile and 200plus other organizations joining the cause.

Dengue fever spreading swiftly Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer

nrodriguez@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TREASURE COAST — As the number of confirmed Dengue Fever cases on the Treasure Coast continues to swell, the Florida Department of Health in both Martin and St. Lucie counties are continuing to ask residents to remain diligent in mosquito protection efforts. In the past two weeks, eight additional cases of the mosquito-borne illness were confirmed in the Rio area of Jensen Beach, bringing the total to 15. Of the cases, nine are Martin County residents, two are out-of-state visitors and four are St. Lucie residents, health department officials said. Jensen Beach resident and Indian Riverkeeper, Marty Baum, encourages his neighbors to take official alerts seriously by tipping and tossing standing water in yards where mosquitos breed and always using a repellant during outings, day or night. Before contracting the excruciating virus, often referred to as “break-bone fever” because of

the intense joint pain it causes, Baum paid mosquitos little mind, saying the insects came along with the Florida way of life. Baum, who believes he was bitten by an infected mosquito in his significant other’s Rio back yard three weeks ago, said thanks to the high fever the illness brought, he remembers little from the experience, except for the pain. “I had a 102-degree fever,” said Baum, whose girlfriend also fell ill. The fever lasted for eight days, Baum added. “I was almost convulsing with shivers.” Baum said it all started with a headache. Symptoms usually appear three to 14 days after the bite of an infected mosquito and include sudden onset of fever, severe headache, eye pain, muscle and joint pain and bleeding, according to the Florida Department of Health. Once the debilitating pain set in a few days later, Baum contacted the Martin County Health Department, was seen by a doctor and was diagnosed. In all, Baum said he was bedridden for three weeks. “Nothing was comfortable,” Baum said. “Every joint hurt.”

Marty Baum “… It totally, totally wiped me out,” said Baum, who works as an Indian River advocate. “I’m really glad it’s over.” Quick recognition and management of symptoms is effective at ensuring the condition doesn’t worsen. There is no treatment for Dengue Fever. Baum said he used ibuprofen and aspirin to manage his symptoms. Dengue Fever is a disease transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito, not person to person. In the Western Hemisphere, the Aedes aegypti

mosquito is the main transmitter of dengue viruses. In some cases, the Aedes albopictus mosquito has also transmitted the disease. Both of these tropical mosquitoes are found in large numbers in Martin and St. Lucie counties. Locally acquired dengue is rare in the U.S. Prior to the 15, the last case was contracted by a resident of Port Salerno in August 2011. There have been no previous locally acquired cases of dengue in St. Lucie County, officials said. Nearly all dengue cases reported in the 48 continental states were acquired elsewhere by travelers or immigrants, according to the Centers for Disease Control website. Most dengue cases in U.S. citizens occur in those inhabitants of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Samoa and Guam, which are endemic for the virus, the website states. Both Martin and St. Lucie county mosquito control officials have been going door-to-door to drain spots in backyards with standing

water. Efforts in Martin County have been concentrated in the Rio area, officials said. In St. Lucie County, five areas have been swept. “The way Dengue is controlled is by putting boots on the ground,” Mosquito Control director Jim David said. “It’s not controlled by spray.” The mosquitos contract the illness from biting infected humans then breeding with each other, David said.

Tips on repellent use • Always read label directions carefully for the approved usage before you apply a repellent. Some repellents are not suitable for children. • Products with concentrations of up to 30 percent DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide) are generally recommended. Other U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-approved repellents contain Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535. These products are generally available at local phar-

macies. Look for active ingredients to be listed on the product label. • Apply insect repellent to exposed skin or onto clothing, but not under clothing. • In protecting children, read label instructions to be sure the repellent is age-appropriate. According to the Centers for Disease Control, mosquito repellents containing oil of lemon eucalyptus should not be used on children under the age of 3. DEET is not recommended on children younger than 2 months old. • Avoid applying repellents to the hands of children. Adults should apply repellent first to their own hands and then transfer it to the child’s skin and clothing. • If additional protection is necessary, apply a permethrin repellent directly to your clothing. Again, always follow the manufacturer’s directions. Source: Florida Department of Health

Driving the veterans Patrick McCallister For Veteran voice

patrick.mccallister@yahoo.com

At 75, George Sanders wakes at 3 a.m. most mornings. Oh, the retired fella isn’t getting up to head fishing. Nah, he’s got better things to do with his time. The Stuart man drives veterans from Martin County to the West Palm Beach Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, 7305 N. Military Trail. “It’s a pleasure to drive them,” he said. “It’s a pleasure to wake up in the morning and drive veterans to the hospital.”

Sanders gets up at 3 a.m., so he can start getting to veterans at appointed spots around 5:30 a.m. Then he drives them to the VA medical center. Mary Phillips, chief of voluntary services, said Sanders has given veterans more than 12,000 hours over the last 12 years. Tony Reese, Martin County’s Veterans Services supervisor, said he’s giving them something far more important than trips. Veterans head to the medical center when they have problems. That’s when life can get a bit uncertain. “They know him,” Reese said. “Being able to rely on him is huge. They have to get to the

hospital and he’s extremely reliable.” Sanders is part of the Veterans Transportation Network. The program is a collaborative effort of the VA, the Disabled American Veterans and some counties. Phillips said the West Palm medical center has six vans through the DAV’s Transportation Network program. The DAV raises funds to purchase transport vans at a discounted rate, then donates them to the VA’s 172 medical centers for the program. Additionally, the West Palm VAMC has four other vans provided by Indian River and Mar-

at the company’s Stuart facility from the mid-60s until it closed in the 1990s. Not how things were supposed to work out when he moved to the area from New York City. Sanders’ then-wife had family living in Martin County. He moved down to open a pool hall. It was on Seventh Street in Stuart. That wasn’t working out as well as he hoped. After one particularly bad weekend, Sanders was rethinking his life plans. “Monday, I went to apply for a job at Grumman,” he said. “I had what it takes, so they took me in.” He helped build the F-14 Tomcat and OV-1 Mohawk. When Grumman moved out of Stuart, Sanders decided to stay. So, he retired. A few years later … “Someone said, ‘George, we need a driver,’” he said. Sanders volunteered. He enjoyed talking to the veterans and hearing their stories. One time while making some friendly chat with a veteran, another got annoyed.

“He told me to shut up and drive,” Sanders said. Sanders pulled over, got out and opened the back passenger door. He told the veteran no matter what kind of news he’d gotten at the hospital to remember others in the van were people with emotions like himself. The man apologized. “You know, that man became my best friend,” Sanders said. “I never had no more problems.” Phillips said volunteers must pass background checks. “All drivers get a yearly physical and must go to driver training programs,” she said.

Art films return to Lyric Staff writer

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

STUART — If you live in a big city or university town, there is usually at least one theater that shows art films. They specialize in documentaries, foreign films and independent films that are not part of the movie-making factories. The Lyric Film Society brings those films to Stuart as part of its Art Cinema series. The program is a continuing series of films that do not play the regular theaters and would not be seen locally without the series. The Lyric has added a new high definition screen and projector to enhance

the viewing. For September, two films turn the spotlight on artists and the artistic process: “The Mystery of Picasso,” and “Becoming Traviata.” The third film is a political thriller, “The Company You Keep,” directed and starring Robert Redford. “The Mystery of Picasso” will be shown Sept. 16-17. The film was made in 1956 by Henri-Georges Clouzot and shows Picasso at work drawing or painting 15 different works. The film uses tightly-compressed, time-lapse cinematography to show the master as he was rarely seen, even appearing in swim trunks. Each of the works featured in the film was intentionally de-

The political thriller is based on the novel by Neil Gordon and tells the story of a former of the revolutionary militant group the Weather Underground, hidden from the FBI for some 30 years, who goes on the run when a journalist, played by Shia LaBoeuf, reveals his identity. Robert Redford has assembled an all-star cast that includes Julie Christie, Stanley Tucci, Nick Nolte and Susan Sarandon.

STUART — For students in Martin County who want to learn to play string instruments, including the violin, viola, cello, bass and guitar, there aren’t a lot of options. Many public schools do not have string programs. The nonprofit Bach’s Children Music School in Stuart exists to fill that gap. Peggie O’Neill of Palm City is the director of a school where the youngest student is 2-½ and the oldest … decades older. “If it’s got a string, we teach it to anyone who wants to play,” O’Neill said. The school offers private lessons and has two orchestras, a beginner and middle level. The middle level students are not open to adults. The middle orchestra

provides training for the Treasure Coast Youth Symphony. Piano lessons are also available. The school also offers ensembles, duets, quartets and chamber music groups. “We have a separate store front where we teach music theory and piano lessons,” O’Neill said. “We try to have children play in different combos, like a violin and guitar. We full prepare them for college, should they want to go to college (for music.) That includes theory and piano, which they need. String players don’t usually get a great deal of music theory” The school has approximately 100 students and O’Neill teaches 35 of them on the violin and viola. Classes are held during the day, Monday-Saturday. Homeschooled children often come in

“The Company You Keep” will be shown Sept. 23-24. “Becoming Traviata,” is the story of the staging of Verdi’s opera as a modern, minimalist production. Filmmaker Philippe Beziat follows French soprano Natalie Dessay and opera director Jean-Francois Sivadier as they create the opera with little of the grandeur usually associated with it. The opera production was filmed over a two-month period from conceptualization to performance on a stage with few props or costumes. In addition to Dessay as Violetta, the production stars Charles Castronovo as Alfredo. The music is performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. “Becoming Traviata” will be presented Sept. 30-Oct. 1.

General admission tickets to Art Cinema showings are $10. The Lyric Film Society offers memberships for $100 annually. That includes discounted film tickets for $6. Supporting memberships for $250 include one free ticket. Contributions are tax-deductible and help the Film Society expand its programming and reach a broader audience. The Lyric Theatre is located at 59 S.W. Flagler Ave., Stuart. while schools are in session. The orchestras and lessons for other students are held in the afternoon or on Saturday. On Sunday, O’Neill performs with the Irish band, the Rowdy Micks. While O’Neill has that very young student who fell in love with her big sister’s playing, most of the youngsters start between 5 and 7. “We hold a recital night once a month,” O’Neill said. “It’s a small recital, but it’s usually packed. Parents love it. They’re proud and they clap. The children are well-supported.” O’Neill, who was trained at the prestigious Mannes College of Music in New York, takes a relaxed attitude to performing. There are no auditions for admission into the school and no one has to perform in a recital. “We take everybody,” she said. “We can take them right away and can rent some instruments. We recommend that parents rent them as the young ones outgrow them. Most places have a trade-in policy. “We don’t force performing. Everybody is invited to play, but they’re not forced. We don’t want to scare them away. It’s too important. We’re very friendly.” People often ask O’Neill about the name of the school. Of course, Bach was a famed musician. Less well-known is the large number of children he fathered. “Most of his many children became musicians,” O’Neill said. “We’re all Bach’s children. He’s the father of what we all do.” The public will be able to hear students perform on Oct. 25 from 6-7:30 p.m., when the school will hold a fundraiser. Local artists will have their work for sale and in each room, children will be performing. Tickets are $15 and include wine and hors d’oeuvres. Money will help fund scholarships. “It’s a chance to hear wonderful music and see wonderful art,” O’Neill said. “We love to show off our school.” Bach’s Children Music School is located at 944 S.E. Central Parkway, Stuart. For information about the school or to purchase tickets for the fundraiser, call Peggie O’Neill at (772) 485-8820 or send an email to BCMSINC@ gmail.com. The school’s website is being revamped, but the address is wwwbachchildrenmusicschool.com.
