Park users asked for opinions Staff writer

PALM CITY — Martin County is looking for people’s opinions about what to build at Charlie Leighton Park, 2701 S.W. Cornell Ave. “What we’re doing, we’re applying for a Florida Recreation Development Assistance Grant,” Nakeischea Smith, community development specialist, said. “We’re

issuing a community survey about what amenities (people) would like to see at Leighton Park.” The park beside the Palm City Bridge has boat ramps, a fishing pier, and ball fields, along with a community center. The county would like to know if folks want more boat parking, outdoor fitness stations, non-motorized boat launches, or picnic shelters. “We’re looking at putting in $80,000 from the (Communi-

ty Redevelopment Agency), and $80,000 from the grant, so we’re looking at $160,000,” Smith said. The survey is at martincountycra. com. Folks have until Monday, Sept. 23 to take the survey. It has an area for adding suggestions about park amenities not mentioned, such as playgrounds. “Not everything is set in stone,” Smith said, “We do take the time to read your feedback.”

PALM CITY – Alexandra Agro has always been in a hurry. The former Palm City resident graduated from Martin County High School and received an associate degree from Indian River State College in an accelerated program. “I was super-involved with school,” she said. “I was trying to get school done fast because I wanted to be a model. I always wanted to be a model, but I wanted a degree.” Today, the 21-year-old lives in New York City and until recently, a contestant on “America’s Next Top Model.” She is in the first competition to feature males as well as female models. “It’s crazy having guys on the show,” she said. “It’s fun being part of the first season. Instead of a lot of cat fights, it’s more about the guys and girls: who’s dating whom. I like having guys. It broke up the estrogen in the group. It was interesting to be in a house with guys for so long. I made friends, lifelong friends, with

mostly everybody. It’s a relationship and a bond.” Model and entrepreneur Tyra Banks hosts the show, in which the eight men and eight women live under one roof and compete for the title and a prize package that will help the winner launch her-or his-career. For Agro, the competition is a means to an end. She majored in business marketing at IRSC. “You can only model for so long,” she said. “It’s about age 25. You have to brand yourself. I want to be more then a face. I have the background to create a bigger career.” The show was taped and is airing now, and voting is complete. Agro is in New York modeling and taking acting lessons. “I’m capitalizing on ‘America’s Next Top Model,’ she said.” New York is the fashion capital of

our country. I’m going to model as much as I can. It’s my prime time to do this, while the show is airing.” For Agro, appearing on the show is literally a dream come true. “It’s such an incredible experience,” she said. “I watched it when I was little. It’s surreal. I look up to Tyra Banks so much. She created a huge empire as a model. (On the show,) you get criticism and positive feedback. I got to do amazing things and go to amazing places, like Bali. It’s the most incredible place.

Area vet wins bridge logo design contest Staff writer

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

MARTIN COUNTY — And the winner is … the National Guard sergeant who designed the logo for the Veterans Memorial Bridge while he was serving in Afghanistan. True story. “In my spare time, I worked on it a little bit,” Mickey Planker of Stuart said. Planker was among about 75 artists who submitted logos to the contest last month. “He had a good piece of art and a really cool story,” Beth Zsoka, bridge project public information officer, said. The Stuart man, along with the rest of the Florida National Guard’s 806th Military Police Company, returned home on Aug.

23 from a deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The company is stationed in Fort Pierce. All submissions to the Bridge Event Planning Committee’s contest had to be in by Aug. 30. Planker learned about the contest to design the bridge logo from friends’ emails. As he went to work on it, a few ideas weighed on the artist’s mind. He wanted a patriotic theme — minus the overwhelming glitz and glare. His logo featured numerous occurrences of reds, whites and blues, but in varying shades offset by other tones. Planker wanted to pay tribute to fallen service members without sadness. That he did by adding silhouette of a bird in flight. “Bird flying, spirits flying,” he said. His logo also features numerous environmental images, including

“(The contest) was going down when they were releasing millions of gallons of water out of Lake Okeechobee,” he said. Zsoka said the logo will be used for invitations to the Veterans Memorial Bridge dedication ceremony that’ll be on Saturday, Nov. 16. Additionally, the logo will go onto posters and T-shirts that’ll be sold at the dedication ceremony. Proceeds of poster and T-shirt sales will be donated to benefit veterans, Zsoka said. Planker will get $1,000, along with the chance to sell his original artwork at the dedication ceremony. Additionally, he will be featured in the October edition of MartinArts. The Federal Highway Administration is funding the $65-million bridge construction through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Construction started in April, 2011. Not long after, the Martin County Commission voted to rename what was the Indian Street Bridge to Veterans Memorial Bridge.

Dedication festivities will launch with a 5k run at about 7 a.m., Zsoka said. MCM Timing and Results, Jensen Beach is organizing the run. After the 5k, dignitaries such as county commissioners will ceremonially dedicate the bridge. Planker said he’s among area running aficionados looking forward to dashing the bridge when it’s opened. He hopes to use its incline while training for a half marathon later this year. The Connecticut transplant stuck around South Florida after finishing art school in the early ‘90s. “I like surfing,” Planker said. “I went to Stuart, really, looking for some surf. True story.” He lives in the area with his wife, Rachel, and their twin preschool sons, Colton and Mason. He works at McNicholas & Associates, a public-relations and marketing company. Zsoka said she saw all the submitted logos. “I wasn’t a judge, which is good,” she said. “I wouldn’t have been able to pick.”

County commish gives first nod to budget increase Staff writer

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

MARTIN COUNTY — The Martin County Commission gave its first nod to the proposed 2013-2014 budget at a special meeting, Monday, Sept. 9. The commission will take its second and final budget vote on Tuesday, Sept. 24. The tentative capital and operating budgets combined come in at $360.6 million, about 7 percent higher than the adopted 12-13 budgets, $337.2 million. The commission also approved a slight property-tax increase. The tentative property-tax, or millage, rate is just more than $9 per $1,000 of assessed, non-exempt value, or 9.0080 mills. The current year’s budget has a property-tax rate of about $8.73 per $1,000 of assessed, non-exempt value, or 8.7258 mills. Property taxes make up about 37 percent of Martin’s revenue. If the commission adopts the tentative budget for the coming fiscal year — Oct. 1 to Sept. 30 — it will be the second year of increasing the county budgets, and the third year of swelling the general fund. The new budget swells the number of county fulltime equivalent positions from 865 to 882. The average value of a single-family home in Mar-

If the commission adopts the tentative budget for the coming fiscal year — Oct. 1 to Sept. 30 — it will be the second year of increasing the county budgets, and the third year of swelling the general fund. The new budget swells the number of county full-time equivalent positions from 865 to 882.

tin County, according to the Property Appraiser’s Office, is about $167,000. With just the $50,000 homestead exemption, the non-exempt value is about $117,000, which is up slightly from last year. Last year Laurel Kelly, property appraiser, reported that Martin’s taxable value was about $16.9 billion. This year her office is putting that at $17.1 billion. A slight increase — about .88 percent — but an increase. The last time Martin was close to a $17.1 billion taxable value was in 2011. Under the current year’s property-tax rate, the bill for an average homesteaded single-family home is about $1,019. If the commission adopts the tentative rate for 13-14, that will climb about 3 percent to $1,053. No one from the public spoke at the meeting. The commission has had budget hearings since July.

Having More Retirement Accounts is Not the Same as Having More Money. When it comes to the number of retirement accounts you have, the saying “more is better” is not necessarily true. In fact, if you hold multiple accounts with various brokers, it can be difficult to keep track of your investments and to see if you’re properly diversified.* At the very least, multiple accounts usually mean multiple fees. Bringing your accounts to Edward Jones could help solve all that. Plus, one statement can make it easier to see if you’re moving toward your goals. *Diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss.

To learn why consolidating your retirement accounts to Edward Jones makes sense, call your local financial advisor today.

Light of the World helps folks near and far Patrick McCallister Staff writer

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PALM CITY — Teresa Banks used to hold her nose when she visited hospitals. But, Banks believes medicine is right were God wanted her to be, so that’s where she went. “In 1989, I started doing medical missions,” the registered nurse said. Banks is co-founder and president of Light of the World Charities, a Palm City-based international medical and dental missions organization that also helps folks right here at home. On Saturday, Sept. 28, the organization will host the Around the World Fundraiser at its new office, 1508 S.W. Mapp Road. The party will start at 5 p.m. and feature hors d’oeuvres, drinks, and drawings. Additionally, doctors and nurses will be on hand to talk about their experiences on international trips. Tickets are $15. Life changed for Banks when her infant son, Tommy John, died from a sudden brain tumor in the early 1980s. Banks said that around that time a lot of children in the Port St. Lucie area were developing various neurological disorders. His death strained her then marriage into separation. “All I ever wanted was a family and kids,” Banks said. “I lost it all, so I laid down my life to God. I said, ‘I tried it my way, and that didn’t work. I’ll try it your way.” Far as Banks is concerned, God’s way was nursing school.

Staff photo by Patrick McCallister Teresa Banks, president of Light of the World Charities, checks surgical inventories. The Palm City organization had a surgical team in Central America Sept. 1 to 13. It’ll send one to Africa in October. In addition to its international work, the charity has dental and surgical services at its Palm City office, 1508 S.W. Mapp Road. She graduated in 1988 and started on international medical missions not long after. By 1999, Banks teamed up with her pastor, the Rev. Barnard Powell, and formed Light of the World. Its first missions were to Peru. By 2011, the organization added local dental assistance and has grown into also doing some local

surgeries. Two Friday mornings a month there are dental clinics at the office, Therese Becker, dental coordinator, said. “We try to see 10 to 12 patients those mornings,” she said. “Sometimes we only have one volunteer dentist and can take six.” Becker, a certified dental assistant, said because Light of the World is a not-for-profit corporation that charges patients nothing, retired dentists have easy means to get state certification to practice there.

The charity’s most recent trip was to the San Benito Jose — St. Benedict Joseph — Center for Medical Assistance, Comayagua, Honduras. That was Sept. 9 to 13. The charity jointly operates the center with the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. In October, the surgical and dental teams will head to Tanzania. In December, they’ll head to Haiti. Family celebrates Molly’s 40th birthday with community Patrick McCallister Staff writer

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PALM CITY — Deborah and Kevin Sharkey, co-founders of Molly’s House in Stuart, will celebrate the 40th anniversary of their daughter’s birthday on Monday, Sept. 23 at Vine & Barley Palm City, 2591 High Meadows Ave. The celebration will be 5 to 7 p.m., and feature numerous raffle prizes and more. The celebration is a fundraiser for Molly’s House. Molly Sharkey died in 1992 after a six-year battle with chronic myelogenous leukemia. Before she died, Molly asked her family to help her build a hospitality house, a comfortable and comforting place for medical patients — and their families — getting care at Martin Memorial Medical Center and other facilities in Stuart. Molly’s House opened at 430 S.E. Osceola St. in 1996. “Molly’s favorite saying was, ‘God has a plan for me — I just wish he’d send a postcard,’” Deborah said. Molly was diagnosed with the cancer in 1986. The diagnosis guaranteed little but pain. “If a child gets it, it’s hell in a hand basket,” Deborah said. “Molly was always on the edge. Molly never had a good ride.” And Molly rode all over as the family sought cutting-edge treatments and grasped for any possible cures, the youngest sibling, Jessica McLain, said. “This was before the Internet,” Jessica said. “My mother lived in medical libraries and was always talking to medical students, researchers, anybody who’d listen.” As Molly checked into different hospitals around the country, the

Because that organization focuses on children and youths, there wasn’t enough volume of medical care to warrant building one in Martin. However, staff at that charity gave the Sharkeys a lot of ideas, advice and other help to start Molly’s House. “When Molly was still alive, she and architect — they must have designed 10 houses together,” Deborah said. Martin County commissioner John Haddox, Palm City, has a word for the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs, FDVA. “Indiantown,” he said. At its last regular meeting — Tuesday, Sept. 10 — Haddox asked the Martin County Commission for its backing to put together a steering committee tasked with finding a land donor and pitching the state to build a veterans nursing home in Indiantown. “(The home) would serve Indian River, Martin, St. Lucie, and Palm Beach counties,” Haddox

said. “Get a map and draw a 45mile radius from Indiantown and around. Especially with Palm Beach County, the distance fits pretty well, and the number of veterans works pretty well.” Among other things, the state veterans department operates six nursing homes with 120 beds each, and an assisted living facility with 150. The nursing homes are, by far, the FDVA’s largest function. During its last 60-day session, the Florida Legislature approved about $100,000 for an independent study to determine whether a new veteran nursing home is needed, and if so where it should go.

Jessica works at the Martin Memorial, where Molly spent much of her time after the family moved to the area in 1989. She’s the director of development and strategic philanthropy at the hospital. She’s also a member of Molly’s House’s board of directors. A provision in its bylaws requires a family member to be on the board of directors into perpetuity. “I get to hear the stories from the hospital’s side of the patients

who benefit from Molly’s House,” Jessica said. She recently overheard a patient in protracted treatments talking to another about how the hospitality house has taken a lot of stress off her as she goes through chemotherapy. “I heard her say, ‘I couldn’t imagine if I didn’t have Molly’s House,’” Jessica said. Guests are referred to Molly’s House by medical-care providers, such as Martin Memorial, assisted living facilities, surgical centers and others. It has 14 bedrooms. For more information, visit mollyshouse.org. Tickets for the birthday celebration are $40. To get them, call (772) 223-6659, or stop by Molly’s House.

HOME from page 8 Haddox wasn’t aware of that when he asked for the county commission’s backing to assemble a steering committee to find a land donor and prepare a lobbying effort. He was a county veteran service officer in Martin for about 13 years before retiring and running for the commission in 2012. Haddox said it long seemed to him that Indiantown was the logical next place to build a veterans nursing home. “To me it’s important to pursue this, because we’re in an area between Pembroke Pines and

Daytona,” he said. The closest veteran nursing home to the Treasure Coast is the Alexander “Sandy” Nininger Veterans’ Nursing Home, 8401 W. Cypress Drive, Pembroke Pines. The next closest is the Emory L. Bennett State Veterans’ Nursing Home, 1920 Mason Ave., Daytona Beach. Bennett was built in 1993. Nininger in 2001. Steve Murray, communications director for the FDVA, said the last home was built in 2010. “That was (the Clyde E. Lassen State Veterans’ Nursing Home) in St. Augustine,” he said. Murray said that the last

home cost about $30 million to build. The state paid about 35 percent of the costs. The federal Department of Veterans Affairs — which is separate from the state veterans agency — paid about 65 percent of the costs. Murray said the FDVA has the needed money for its share to go forward with building a state veterans nursing home, because of changes the legislature made to its trust funds last session. He said it’s far too soon to say whether Martin County could be where the next home is built. “We’ll take the results of the report and deliver it to the

governor and cabinet with our recommendations and we’ll go from there,” Murray said. The homes employ about 160 to 170 each, Murray said. Haddox said those jobs could have a huge affect on Indiantown’s economy. McDonald’s and Dollar General recently built locations in Indiantown. “That was their first economic development in 20 years,” Haddox said. Haddox hopes to get the Florida Veterans Council, the West Palm Beach Department of Veterans

MARTIN COUNTY -- Local nonprofit, Mary’s Shelter is proud to accept a $12,500 grant from the Frances Langford Foundation that will help the organization continue to provide assistance and guidance to young women throughout the Treasure Coast who are pregnant and homeless. Since opening in Stuart in 2010, Mary’s Shelter has provided many struggling mothers with hope and direction. The organization also offers counseling, parental education, goal setting skills and job training free of charge to women in need. Funding received from the Frances Langford Foundation will allow Mary’s Shelter to expand its programs and services which

have proven to be beneficial to the women who are receiving help through the organization. Recent successes from the shelter include six healthy babies born over the past six months, three mothers earning their GEDs, and two mothers seeking their certification to become certified nursing assistants. “We are so grateful to have received this grant from the Frances Langford Foundation. They’re my biggest cheerleaders. It’s great to have this experience. It was such a huge dream of mine. My mother made me feel I could do anything that I wanted to do,” Win or not, Agro considers this the beginning of her path. “This is the smallest of beginnings,” she said. “I’m taking acting classes and continuing to model, to make the most of this experience. I love modeling and that’s my main passion, but it’s a short career. Acting is a part of modeling, portraying emotions. Agro has people she admires and hopes to emulate. “I’d like to make an empire like Tyra Banks or Heidi Klum,” she said. “Tyra Banks went back and got her master’s. They are moguls who have created more than a face. They’ve created a brand. “In everyday life, I admire my mother, who is my inspiration. She’s the strongest woman I’ve ever met. She keeps me humble and on my path.” In case any of the male readers or viewers is wondering, Agro is not available. She has a boyfriend who is also a model and is very supportive of her career, no matter what path she chooses.

Air show dearth ends for now Staff writer

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TREASURE COAST — There’s been a dearth of air shows for the last few months, but that’s about to change. Three shows are scheduled for the Space and Treasure coasts in the next few weeks. Air shows have been unusually quiet in Florida since spring, Bryan Lilley, owner of B. Lilley Productions, said. The company specializes in air shows. “Normally there’d be 15 (in Florida) from March to November,” he said. “Sequestration canceled a lot of air shows.” Put simply, the federal budget sequestration grounded the Air Force Thunderbirds and Navy

Blue Angels. Those crack demonstration teams are the air show rock stars. Without them, tickets just don’t sell nearly as well. Lilley said a number of promoters shut down shows rather than go the 2013 season without the elite flight teams to draw ticket buyers. Back on March 1, Maj. Darrick Lee, Thunderbirds’ public affairs, announced that the air-demonstration team would be grounded after April 1 due to the federal-budget sequestration. The Blue Angels soon followed with a similar announcement. Turned out the last anyone saw of the Thunderbirds for the 2013 air-show season was at the 36th annual Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum & TICO Air-

SHOWS from page 21 Show, Titusville, March 22 to 24. “It was a record-breaking crowd,” Terry Yon, former public relations officer at the museum, said in a previous interview. “The Thunderbirds really brought the crowds in.” Lilley had the Thunderbirds scheduled for the October Cocoa Beach Air & Space Show. In April he was confident that the Thunderbirds would be back on the air-show circuit and fly at that show. They’re not, and that show was canceled. After the Cocoa Beach show was canceled, Lilley helped organize the Melbourne Air & Space Show. The first of the upcoming events is the Vero Beach Air Show. That’s a long unheard name to many. “It’s the first one we’ve had in 16 years,” Marty Zickert, president of the Veterans Council of Indian River County, said. That show will be on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 5 and 6, at the Vero Beach Municipal Airport, 3400 Cherokee Drive. Like many municipal airports in Central and South Florida, Vero Beach was a Naval air training station during World War II. The first batch of Navy aviators started training in February 1943. At its peak, there were about 1,400 Navy and Marine Corps members

Patty Wagstaff, Matt Younkin, George Koontz, Scott “Scooter” Yoak, Skip Stewart, and Chris Darnell with the FlashFire Jet Truck. Veterans can get discounted tickets for the show at the Victory Center Military Store, in the Indian River Mall. Those tickets are $10 each. The mall is at 6200 20th St., Vero Beach. The military store is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday. For more about the Vero Beach Air Show, visit veroairshow.com. Stuart and Melbourne will have air shows the first weekend of November. That action will start at Stuart’s Martin County Airport Witham Field, 2001 S.E. Airport Road, on Friday, Nov. 1, at 5:45 with a flag drop. After the drop, there’ll be shows by the Twin Tiger and AeroShell aerobatic teams well into the dark. “It’s a different style show, because you’re seeing aircraft fly with strobe lights,” Michael Roberts, president of the Road to Victory Military Museum said. “They’re aircraft set up to fly at night. It was later named after Paul “Homer” Witham, the first known Navy aviator from Martin County to die in World War II. The Stuart Air Show continues on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 2 and 3, with acts such as the Lewis & Clark FLS Microjet, Precious Metal Air Racer, Air Sports Parachute Demonstration Team, and the Julie Clark, John Klatt, Dan Buchanan and Gary Ward airshows, along with Elgin Wells’ Starjammer. Stewart and Younkin will also appear at the Stuart Air Show. Veterans will get in free with proof of military service. Roberts said he believes this will be one of the biggest turnouts for the annual air show. “We feel the phones are ringing more than usual,” he said. “We’re getting more and more acts coming to the show, because other shows have canceled. Our ticket sales are ahead of last year, double.” For information about the Stuart Air Show, visit stuartairshow. com. The crack pilots of the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels are highly-trained and motivated combat aviators who can fly through any melee — except bickering politicians. Previously, Congress passed and the president signed the Budget Control Act of 2011. The Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, often called the super committee, formed to work out a deal for Congress to raise the federal government’s debt ceiling to avoid sovereign default on previously-appropriated spending. The committee hatched the idea of giving Congress and President Barack Obama a frightening prospect if they couldn’t agree on budget cuts and revenue increases — sequestration, automatic across-the-board spending cuts

Many believed the prospect of an across-the-board budget cuts that could send the nation into recession would force Congress and the president to work toward more agreeable solutions. While some compromises have happened, the Congress and White House are still locked in budget battles that have brought on the budget sequestration. The 2013-2014 budget years starts in October. Play shows power of a lie Shelley Koppel Staff writer

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

STUART — Lillian Hellman’s play, “The Children’s Hour,” is based on a true story. In Scotland, in 1810, a young girl accused her school mistresses of having an affair. Within days, the school was closed as parents withdrew their children. The school mistresses sued and won a court verdict, but their lives were ruined.

In the Hellman play, written in 1934, an angry student, Mary Tilford, runs away from boarding school and says that the owners of the school are having a lesbian affair. Telling the lie has tremendous ramifications for everyone involved. Today, in an age of social media, when anything found on the Internet is presumed by many to be true, the play could not be timelier. The Barn Theatre will present “The Children’s Hour” from Sept.

how it affects innocent people,” he said. “When you tell lies, you don’t realize the effect it has. Often, the person who is suffering for the lie has no idea who said it. What makes it worse is that it’s a 13-year-old girl.” The play takes place in a school, so some young actors were needed. Most of the ones who auditioned had not worked in a play with such adult subject matter. “I had each parent read the play before they gave permission for their daughters to take part,” he said. “They’ve been accepting and supporting.” The cast includes Pat Burgemeister as Mrs. Tilford; Kingsley Ehrich as Mary Tilford; Merilee Lawrence as Lily Mortar; Denise Brodie as Karen Wright; Jack Brenner as Dr. Cardin; Andrea Lopez as Martha Dobie; Shauna Stone as Catherine; Rosemary Knight as Agatha; Nicole Banks as Rosalie; Paige Banks as Helen; Daphne Ruggeri as Peggy; Kaylee Colley as Lois and Courtney Gall as Evelyn. Marelli is thrilled with his cast, and is particularly proud of the young actors. “The young people have impressed me, working with experienced actors and getting their emotions,” he said. “It’s a joy to see as a director. They want to stay when I’m ready to call it quits. Young people don’t get enough credit. They have such busy lives. It will give the community a chance to see what our young people can do.” Marelli served as the Barn’s artistic director last year and also was responsible for bringing the drama, “The Twilight of the Golds,” to the Barn. He hopes to see more thought-provoking works. “People come to the theater and like to laugh and be entertained,” he said. “We have an obligation to deal with what’s happening in our lives. With ‘Twilight of the Golds,’ the people were hungry for something different. The comments were amazing. “We need more innovative and edgier plays at the Barn. The Barn can grow into something really special. There’s nothing like theater. We have to improve the quality of what we put on stage. That takes work.” The Barn Theatre, 2400 E. Ocean Blvd., Stuart, will present “The Children’s Hour,” a drama by Lillian Hellman, from Sept. 27Oct. 13. Tickets are $20. Performances are Wed-Sat. at 8 p.m. and Sun. at 2 p.m. To purchase tickets, call the box office at (772) 287-4884 or visit the website www.barn-theatre. com.
