Paddling pals Stronger than expected primary election turnout in Martin County Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

MARTIN COUNTY — It’s hard to draw too many conclusions about what voters were thinking, but Martin County bucked some statewide trends in the primary election, Tuesday, Aug. 26. Countywide, about 24.87 percent of Martin’s 104,687 voters showed up at the polls in one way or another. “In Martin County, we’re on the higher end of turnout,” Vicki Davis, Supervisor of Elections, said. ”Statewide, it’s 17.6 percent.” Palm City had an especially strong turnout. About 27 percent of its 19,139 voters cast ballots. But the poll workers never saw most of the voters. “The majority of our votes were

cast through the mail,” Davis said. This was the first election with the majority of participating voters opting for mailed ballots, Davis said. Of the 26,039 votes cast, 14,512 were mail ballots,

Program helps pediatric patients Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

MARTIN COUNTY — For the parent of a child with a life-limiting illness, worry is a constant companion. The diagnosis brings medical bills, unanswered questions, stress on family relations and a host of other problems. Now, the Little Treasures program at Treasure Coast Hospice is there to help families in Martin and St. Lucie counties. Unlike hospice for adults, where aggressive treatment has ended, young patients are able to continue to receive treatment while receiving hospice services, Patrice Austin, pediatric program manager, said that this is a recent change. “The patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 introduced concurrent care for children. This entitled children to be enrolled in hospice care while still receiving aggressive and curative treatments. The children of Florida began to experience the benefits of concurrent care in

MARTIN COUNTY — The Aug. 26 primary arranged and rearranged the upcoming general election. After a contentious Republican primary among six candidates, Carl Domino will carry the party’s banner against incumbent Democratic Congressman Patrick Murphy for the 18th District, which includes Martin, St. Lucie and part of Palm Beach counties. Murphy had no Democratic primary challengers. All in all, Martin incumbents fared well in the primary election. Sen. the Republican will face Democrat Bruno Moore to hold the state’s 32nd District. Sarah Heard, Port Salerno, held off a challenge from Barbara Clowdus, publisher of Martin Currents, to keep the Martin County Commission’s District 4 seat. The universal primary settled that race between two Republicans. Incumbent Ed Fielding, Stuart, took down two fellow Republican challengers: Stacey Hetherington and John “Trapper” Schierbaum. Now he’ll face unaffiliated candidate Ron Rose, executive director of the Jensen Beach Chamber of Commerce, in the general election. The one incumbent who failed to hold her seat in the primary was

Sept. 11 tributes planned at Cummings Library Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PALM CITY — The United States of America 911 First Responders will have its annual Sept. 11 remembrance and tribute at the Peter & Julie Cummings Library, 2551 Matheson Ave., Palm City, for the first time. That’s the location of the World Trade Center 9/11 Memorial at the Cummings Library. The memorial was dedicated on Flag Day, Saturday, June 14. The centerpiece of the memorial is a 22-foot steel beam from the World Trade Center that stands erect on a pedestal aimed slightly north by northeast. Toward New York City. Toward the World Trade Center.

Former Fire Department City of New York firefighter and now Palm City resident Bill Walsh urges people to remember who attacked the United States. He spoke at the 9/11 Annual Memorial Tribute at Martin County High School in Stuart last year. Walsh was unable to help his fellow firefighters at the World Trade Center because of injuries in a fire before the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11. His firehouse lost about 40 percent of those who responded to the all-respond call. USA 911 First Responders organized the memorial.

Dennis McKenna, who was among first responders to the World Trade Center after the 2001 terrorist attack and is co-founder of the 911 First Responders, said the program will include something that seems to be a first in the nation: a Sept. 11 remembrance for those who weren’t alive, or old enough to remember, when it happened. “It’s the first time a children’s tribute was made,” he said. ”It’s geared to any age for children.” McKenna said a Palm City school principal will host the tribute that’ll be from 3 to 4 p.m. It’ll feature an animated short film explaining the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, in lan-

Customer service – a dying art S

am Walton once stated, “There is only one boss. The customer. And he can fire everybody in the company from the chairman on down, simply by spending his money somewhere else.” So simply stated, but so easily forgotten. You would think with today’s economy being as it is, people would have stepped up their game in customer service, but you don’t have to go far to see people in the workplace who seem to care less about serving those who pay their salaries. From what I’ve seen as of late, people have just about forgotten what it means to be attentive, to actually serve customers, and to get over themselves long enough to truly catch the spirit of serving others. How long has it been since you have truly seen a service employee actually attentive to you as their customer? We have all been there — checking out at the supermarket and the cashier and co-workers are discussing personal subjects and they barely pause to notice you, even when they ask you to pay. How many times have you heard employees openly complain that they have been on their feet all day, haven’t had lunch, a break, etc.? Do they really think we want to hear that? And better yet, do their supervisors and business owners realize it is going on, or do they care? Yes, there are those establishments that seem to have these things figured out, but try to think — how many times

YOUR

Bill Hughes lately, from the time you enter the front door, to getting through shopping, eating, etc., and exiting through checkout — have you truly encountered superior customer service from every person you encountered in a particular place of business? It comes over as a stark reminder just how bad customer service really is when you are overwhelmed when someone actually asks you how you are, if they can help you, and goes the extra mile to make sure your customer experience is above ordinary. Enough of my grousing and complaining — that’s getting us nowhere. As leaders, business owners, and managers, we have to somehow get ourselves and our employees outside of themselves and get them focused on serving the customer — or as Sam Walton put it, we’ll all be fired. How do we get ourselves and employees to catch the vision

of the benefits of excellent customer service? First, we have to instill a general liking for people in our organizations. This is really a no-brainer, but are we filling our positions with people who are intelligent, have good work records, but have no level of compassion, common courtesy, and general respect for others? I have found that someone who hasn’t been raised with the common “please, thank-you, yes ma’am, no ma’am” habits in their life will find it difficult to learn them as an adult. These employees who have not grown up using these common, polite phrases will not truly see their value and will not see how much they can mean to a customer or client. Trying to train them to use them is usually futile. We need to hold out for those employees who naturally value people. Next, we all need to just “get over” ourselves. As different as we all can be — colors, sizes, nationalities, cultures, we all as a general population have much of the same stresses, desire the same things, and need the attention and empathy from other people. We need to be treated kindly by others. When we and our employees allow our moods and stresses to affect how we are

treating customers, we are doing the customers a huge disservice. We need to look past our personal needs and stresses and realize that others are looking to us for help, assistance, respect, and service. We all select our moods and temperament just as we select the clothes we put on each day. Our mood is a choice. One of the co-benefits of treating others well is that we will be see our moods change when we get outside ourselves and serve others. Finally, have fun with it. Make trying to outdo each other in customer service a contest, a sport, a chance to try to one-up each other in our workplaces. Make a decision to create a WOW moment of some type in every interface with each customer in your day. I read about an employer who made up tickets for each employee to give their co-workers when they observed them exhibit great customer service. At the end of each month, the employee with the most tickets got a half day off with pay. Creatively find a way to please that most difficult of persons, find a way to perform your job in your best, happiest frame of mind, and continue to treat others just as we all want to be treated. Of course, you will invariably come across that person who can’t be made happy, who wouldn’t like the color of their goose if it laid golden eggs, that person who is looking for a fight

Ask the Anytime Gal: Expert answers to your health and fitness questions Question: Do you think diet foods are a good choice for people who want to lose weight? Answer: It might seem like a good idea to pick up diet this and diet that while stocking up on groceries, but the truth is, most diet foods are actually terrible for you. Packed with nasty chemicals and preservatives, diet foods might be low-calorie and covered with labels guaranteeing your weight loss, but they’re often detrimental to weight loss efforts because they leave you feeling less satisfied. Stick with reasonable portions of the real stuff, and you’ll feel more satisfied, and your body will thank you for fueling it with nutritious food. Question: Everywhere I go these days I hear how important exercise is, but by the end of the day I’m just too exhausted and I can’t get motivated. I’d rather relax. Is that so wrong? Answer: If you are exhausted at the end of the day, that’s all the more reason to exercise.

Linda Lawrence Research shows that as few as 10 weeks of regular exercise can leave people feeling more energized than they did prior to engaging in an exercise program. Here are a couple of suggestions that may help. If you find you lack motivation at the end of the day, part of your problem may be timing. Don’t put exercise off until you’re too tired to do it. Plan your workout for the time of day when you feel most energized. A 20-minute walk or jog

before heading off to work may be just the ticket. Or you may be able to use your lunch hour for a quick trip to the gym. Just don’t skip lunch — that will leave you feeling more drained. Nibble on a sandwich at your desk when you get back. Something else that helps many people is to make an appointment to workout. Make an appointment to meet a friend or start out by working out with a trainer. It’s a lot harder to skip your workout when someone else is counting on you. We all struggle with motivation from time to time, but by continually putting off activity, you’re turning it into a nagging chore, and that could be part of what’s making you feel so lethargic. Regain control of the situation and start exercising today! Question: Do you have any simple diet tricks that actually work? I feel like I’ve tried everything over the years and most were unsuccessful. Answer: Here are my top three dieting tips. No. 1: Prep healthy

food choices BEFORE you’re hungry. Make some hard boiled eggs, pre-chop your favorite veggies, whip up some salads, make a big batch of your favorite hummus — you get the idea. No. 2: You know how grocery stores are arranged to encourage you to choose certain items and spend more money? Well, you can use this same approach to encourage health eating at home. Once you’re done prepping some healthy goodies for the week, take them and put them on the top shelf of the fridge — right in your line of sight. Do the same with healthy foods in your pantry. And put a big bowl of fruit out on your countertop. Research shows that keeping unhealthy foods outof-sight really does help to keep them out of your mind, too. And by making healthier options easy to grab-and-go, you’re setting yourself up for success. No. 3: When you crave a donut, cookie or candy… Drink water! Many times, dehydration manifests itself in what feels like cravings

about 56 percent. The supervisor sent out about 23,000 mailed, or absentee, ballots. Some recipients opted to sit out the election, but others likely voted early or on primary day instead of mailing them back to the elections office. The standing record was 40 percent of voters using mailed ballots in the 2012 general election. Any voter can opt to vote with a mail-in ballot. They may return them to the Supervisor of Elections office by hand or courier, too. Bruno Moore, Democratic candidate for the State Senate District 32 seat — now held by Joe Negron, who handily fended off Republican challenger Brandon Cannon with nearly 87 percent of the vote — said he’s seeing a lesson for the general election in the primary. Moore said Negron’s strong showing in the comparatively high voter turnout primary is likely due in large part to his efforts to protect the Indian River Lagoon. “I think Martin County is has a unique balance,” Moore said. “It has a strong Republican base, but a very strong environmental movement. Those things speak to each other in Martin County.” Moore faced no primary challenger. He will go against Negron in the general election Nov. 4. While Gov. Rick Scott took a commanding lead over party challengers Yinka Abosede Adeshina and Elizabeth Cuevas-Neunder in the county and the state, Martin’s Republicans didn’t seem as warm to him as others throughout the state. Statewide, Scott enjoyed 87.64 percent of the Republican primary vote. Martin voters gave him 80.29 percent. Kathleen Boland, chairwoman of Martin’s Republican Executive Committee, said she couldn’t speculate as to why the incumbent governor fared less strongly in Martin. She said sometimes unflattering press over All Aboard Florida, a controversial proposed highspeed rail, and Scott’s seeming late support for cleaning up the Indian River Lagoon, might have dampened some of his local support. Boland said the Governor’s Mansion and Scott’s campaign likely have undercommunicated Scott’s concerns on both issues. “He’s done a great job,” Boland said. ”He’s been responsive to what’s going on (in Martin County).” She said the local party is working to educate voters about Scott’s efforts to address All Aboard Florida and Indian River Lagoon pollution.

www.YourVoiceWeekly.com Kathleen Boland, chairwoman of Martin’s Republican Executive Committee, said she couldn’t speculate as to why the incumbent governor fared less strongly in Martin. She said sometimes unflattering press over All Aboard Florida, a controversial proposed high-speed rail, and Scott’s seeming late support for cleaning up the Indian River Lagoon, might have dampened some of his local support. “We’re talking with folks,” she said. Davis said political watchers should be cautious of reading too much about what primary results mean to a general election. “I say that every election has its own uniqueness, its own personality, if you will,” she said. Davis said that so-called off-year elections traditionally draw fewer voters than presidential election years. However, she’s thinking that this year’s general election will have a higher-than-average turnout in Martin. There are three reasons. One reason is Charlie Crist, the former Republican governor turned Democrat who easily beat Nan Rich in the primary. Statewide, Crist prevailed over Rich with 73.37 percent of the Democratic vote. Martin’s Democratic voters, however, gave him 75.12 percent of their ballots. Another reason, Davis said, is two ballot measures that’ll likely drive many voters to the polls. One is the statewide referendum to enshrine the medical use of marijuana in the state Constitution. The other is the proposed 1-cent sales tax the County Commission put on the local ballot. If voters approve the ballot measure in the general election, there will be a 1-cent local-option sales tax for every $1 of qualifying sales up to $5,000 for four years. If voters approved the measure, the additional sales tax collected in the county can be spent only on repairing existing roads, bridges and drainage infrastructure. It would start in January 2015. The county would get the first proceeds of the new tax from the state next March. Neither proposal has seemed to generate much opposition or advocacy yet. “I think a lot of the advocacy groups have been waiting before we got through the primary, so as not to confuse the voters, and now the machines will start,” Davis said. The general election will be on Nov. 4. Early voting will be from Oct. 20 to Nov. 1.

ly been fiercely competitive. This year, Terlizzi and Zweben decided to combine forces and host a joint fundraiser — something no prior cast members have ever done. They see this as a unique opportunity to work together because the ultimate goal is to raise as much money as possible to support the nonprofit organization’s programs and help ensure every baby in Martin County is born healthy. The Terlizzi and Zweben fundraiser and dance preview, which they call Swango, takes place at Crush Wine Bar on Sept. 5, from 6:30 – 9 p.m. The name is a combination of the dances each of them will be doing – the swing and the tango. Terlizzi has been paired with local dance instructor, Bob Murray, to learn the Argentine Tango. Zweben and her professional dance partner, Travis Scott, will be performing the East Coast Swing. Tickets are $25 and include a free drink and appetizers. There will also be a silent auction. Proceeds from the evening will benefit Martin County Healthy Start Coalition. “A friend of mine participated the first year and said it was a life-changing experience,” Zweben said. “When I was approached this year, I knew the time was right to embrace this challenge. As a mom, Healthy Start’s mission of having every baby in Martin County be born healthy is one that I deeply support.” “This is sure to be an evening full of fun and fancy feet,”Terlizzi said. “As a native of Stuart who has also chosen to raise my children here, I’m so excited to be able to support an organization like Martin County Healthy Start Coalition.” The actual Dancing with the Martin Stars event takes place at StarStruck Theatre on Sept. 13 at 7

p.m. Another new twist for the event is the availability of two live stream locations where guests can watch the performances. Tickets for the main event are $125. School district hosts workshop to help students and parents understand new Florida Standards Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

MARTIN COUNTY — Change is under way at Florida schools. The Martin County School District hopes to help parents and students keep up with The Perfect Brainstorm in 3-D, an interactive workshop on Monday, Sept. 15, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Martin County High School. The program is free. Gone are the days of parents and students hating the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, FCAT. Now student performance is getting measured by the Florida Assessment Standards and end-of-course exams for every class. Tracey Miller, executive director of instructional services, said while evaluation changes have been under way for a few years now, this school year marks a turning point — the switchover is getting a hit of steroids,

so to say. “The state of Florida used a phased-in system starting with kindergarten three years ago.” Miller said. “Those students are now in third. Baby steps, baby steps, all in one fell swoop.” The only remnant of FCAT 2.0 left is the fifth- and eighthgrade science portions, and a handful of older students who need to retest in order to graduate high school. Students these days will be taking the Florida Standards Assessment for English language arts, grades 3 to 11, and math, grades 3 to 8. Miller said the Florida Standards Assessment is based upon the controversial Common Core Standards. Miller said rote knowledge simply won’t cut it like before. She said the Florida Assessment Standards emphasize proving research and problem solving skills. “I think to sum it up, a parent said this to me, ‘The biggest change for our students is teach-

Miller said that means a lot of multiple-choice testing is going by the wayside and narrated answers are taking its place. The Perfect Brainstorm in 3-D is being put on in cooperation with the Florida Department of Education, Miller said. It has portions appropriate to all grade levels. It’s open to anyone interested in changes in education testing. For more about the Florida Standards Assessment, visit www. fassessments.org.

They had been appointed to the Hernando County Corps for three years and Venice Corps for three years. They have two children, Joseph, 14, and Sarah, 12. Capt. Samuel Kim has his own hand saws. It is not a tool for him, but an instrument. It sounds unique, so that he calls it his “singing saw.” He learned it from an Army chaplain in Korea when he was serving the military service about 25 years ago. One night he suddenly heard some unique sounds that he was not sure what it was. He finally found where the sound came from. The chaplain was playing a saw in the chapel of the Army church. Capt. Kim couldn’t believe it was a saw, even though he listened to it. Now he carries the musical saw wherever he goes to talk about

The Salvation Army, an evangelical part of the universal Christian church established in 1865, has been supporting those in need in His name without discrimination for 130 years in the United States. Nearly 30 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through the broadest array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless and opportunities for underprivileged children. McKenna said Americans seem to be getting to a collective point of setting Sept. 11 into the background. “It is within human to want to forget about catastrophes and death,” he said. “It’s a part of the makeup of humans to automatically move on. We know about this.” He said that is part of why it’s important to hold remembrances. On the evening of Sept. 11, the 911 First Responders will have its annual twin light display. This year I won’t be on the Roosevelt Bridge, as in past years. McKenna said he disclose the proposed Stuart location for the lights before press time. It’ll be hard to miss.

approximately 2013, as it rolled out in the state.” Little Treasures is an umbrella for two programs, pediatric hospice care and Partners in Care: Together for Kids. The first is pediatric hospice care for children who meet hospice’s criteria of life-limited illnesses. The second provides palliative care for those with chronic or life-limiting conditions who are already receiving medical services through the Children’s Medical Services Network. “It’s important for pediatricians and parents to know that when a family is faced with the reality of a child’s being ill, that they don’t feel that choosing hospice puts a limit on continuing care,” Austin said. “Not many hospices have a pediatric program.” The program involves a specialized pediatric team. “The family is surrounded with support,” Austin said. “There’s comfort and pain management and assistance with navigating resources on behalf of the child. There are linkages to other services. “There is psychosocial and emotional support from a child life specialist who is a professional who works with children and families to deal with the impact of the illness. There are nurses, a chaplain, music therapist, a pediatrician and pediatric social worker connected to our team. Everything we do, we do with the whole family. We go in for the child, but we serve the whole family.” Children in the Little Treasures or Partners in Care program remain at home. “What is beautiful is that the family continues its normal experience,” Austin said. “The child has the sounds and smells of home, smelling mommy’s cooking, joking. They see life happening. They have their pets. It’s important to a family. They can love their child and gain a team to assist them with the parts that are difficult or unknown. They’re able to help them know, understand and cope with every step.” Jackie and Jed Brownie’s daughter, Kammie, 7, has a progressive neurological disorder and receives services from hospice. The youngster was born 12 weeks early and has always been a wheelchair user, but for five years, she was stable and even able to attend school. Two years ago, her condition deteriorated. “When we were at Miami Children’s Hospital, there had been

www.YourVoiceWeekly.com a severe progression and her neurologist recommended she be placed in hospice,” Jackie Brownie said. “It was surreal. It took a while for it to sink in. The word ‘hospice’ meant ‘elderly people.’ Kids don’t go into hospice. It was a hard hit, but it was an amazing process. We went home at 6 a.m., and by 9 a.m., two people from administration were there and 45 minutes later, a nurse came. “Before hospice, getting equipment that Kammy needed took weeks and multiple phone calls. Before, we had to fight for a nurse. It all had to do with our finances. Now through Little Treasures, we have a wonderful nurse. Two years ago, we’d be in the hospital three or four times a month. Now, the pediatrician comes, if needed. They are able to use dosages of medications to stabilize her. It keeps her at home, where she is safer, because her immune system is compromised.” The music therapist has also been a blessing, Brownie said. “I’ll never forget the day she came. “She’d done research on (Kammy’s condition) and created a CD. It’s not just someone who comes. She has real purpose and love.” The chaplain comes to the house twice a month. “She’s been helpful,” Brownie said. “Our beliefs were tried. We’ve had a scary summer. The social worker/counselor comes once a week and we’re very thankful. It’s a hard situation on a marriage. The nurse can come and stay on a Saturday or Sunday evening so my husband and I can get out. At one point, I couldn’t leave the house and I called and said I had to go to the grocery store. Soon there was a volunteer at the house. “The first time making the call is the hardest. There’s so much support, it’s unbelievable. I don’t know what we ‘d do without them.” For Austin, the work is so rewarding. “The families are very appreciative. They are grateful for the help. They feel it’s made a difference and impacted the outcome. They’ve felt supported, informed and empowered and feel like they’re not alone. End-of-life care is very scary. They don’t have to figure it out by themselves. We make a difference.” For more information about Little Treasures or Partners in Care, call Patrice Austin at (772) 403-4404 or visit the website, www.tchospice.org.

The Florida Board of Nursing licenses, monitors, disciplines, educates and, when appropriate, rehabilitates its licensees, to assure their fitness and competence in providing health care services for the people of Florida. The volunteer board members are appointed by the Governor and subject to confirmation by the Florida State Senate. “Serving on the Board of Nursing is an opportunity for me to serve the nursing profession and the citizens of Florida,” Forst said. “Well-trained and committed nurses are so important to the welfare of our citizenry and it is important to balance those concerns with fair treatment of nurses and prospective nurses.” While Forst currently works on a surgical unit at Martin Medical Center in Stuart, she has the ability, background and experience to float to many different units. A third new client received a notice from the IRS regarding the $166,000 in tax, penalty and interest which he legitimately owed on his 2008 Individual Income Tax. This resulted in the IRS placing a levy on the clients bank accounts. After retaining us, we were able to have the levy released and put his account in a “currently uncollectable” status so he was no longer receiving the harassing collection letters from the IRS.

Maura Barry-Sorenson. Tina McSoley pulled 61.8 percent of the vote in the non-partisan race for the Martin County School Board’s District 4 seat. However, the seat that incumbent Michael Busha is vacating, was left to the general election to decide. The school board’s District 1 race had three contenders. None managed to garner more than 50 percent of the primary vote to settle the race. Jennifer Doak was eliminated, leaving Christia Li Roberts and Lorie Shekailo to battle in the general election. While county commission and school board members must live in their districts, voters through-

out the county vote for them. The general election will be on Nov. 4. Early voting will be from Oct. 20 to Nov. 1. In addition to settling outstanding county races, voters will decide the fate of the proposed 1-cent sales tax the County Commission put on the local ballot.

Memorial Inshore Open to benefit Project L.I.F.T is Sept. 26-27 at the River Palms Cottages & Fish Camp in Jensen Beach. The Open, the largest inshore fishing tournament in this region, is named after longtime Martin County resident Michael Shields, who died at the age of 23 from bone cancer. The tournament follows a catch-andrelease format, with separate categories for snook, tarpon, trout, and redfish. The two-day event features a festive Captain’s Party on Sept. 26; an evening for adults 21 and over that includes an open bar provided by Charlie’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill and a dinner catered by Paella Grill. The afternoon of Sept. 27 features an awards barbecue and a fishing clinic. All events are included in a $100 angler registration fee. For those who wish to only attend the Captain’s Party, tickets are $75 per person in advance or $100 at the door. Sixth annual Fall Fest scheduled

Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PALM CITY — The sixth annual Fall Fest, sponsored by the Palm City Chamber of Commerce, will take place Oct. 25 at Lance Cpl. Justin Wilson Memorial Park. The all-day event has something for everyone, including a children’s area with hands-on activities and crafts. Representatives from the Sheriff’s Office and fire departments have an interactive surprise for youngsters and Duck in the Truck puppets will put on a show. There will also be a “Save the Lagoon” art wall, face painting and the popular pumpkin patch. The event will also feature a classic car show from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., vendors, community organizations, and an array of ethnic, grilled, barbecued and frozen treats. The main stage will have entertainment provided by school children, choirs, dancers, and a performance by Palm City’s own Cassidy Diana, 15. The young singer/songwriter is a self-described “Army brat” who gives voice to the children of soldiers who often pay a heavy price for their parent’s service. In a 2013 interview, Cassidy’s mother, Deanna Wetherell, spoke about how her daughter began singing when her husband, Da-

vid, was deployed. “I took my kids, Cassidy and her younger sister, Lorelei, to my parents’ in North Carolina,” she said. “I said my kids were raised in cars seats. As military people, we moved every two years.” Cassidy listened to music and san during the long drives. In sixth grade, she entered the “Treasure Coast’s Got Talent Competition” and won for her age category. Cassidy, a student at Martin County High school, is a member of the choral group, OPUS. The young performer recently had the opportunity to play for Liz Rose, who has worked with Taylor Swift, as well as songwriters for Tanya Tucker and Sugarland. “I was in Miami, practicing with my guitar player,” Cassidy said, “He told me about a songwriter showcase in Key Largo. You know how far it is. We weren’t planning on going, but I had a dream that there were big songwriters at the show. I told Mom we should go, Mom and Dad drove me down. “We walked in and watched the show. I had asked the owner if they needed someone to play while they were on break. He kept saying no. At the end of the show, the women were packing up their guitars. I thought, ‘They’ll either let me sing or kick me out. I asked ifAugust I played, if they’d listen. 29th Weekend: I started playing (my song) “The
