ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The St. Lucie County Commission voted 4-0 to start the process to establish a new commercial resort zoning area, which will allow a Las Vegas-area businessman to build a new resort on North Hutchinson Island. The plan must undergo a second reading by the Commission and be reviewed by the state, but, if all goes according to the commission’s plan, new indus-

try will find a way to the island, specifically, at the site of the former Radisson Hotel, which was damaged about 10 years ago from hurricanes. Sides were split at the meeting Tuesday. John Wilkes, executive director of the Sunrise Theatre in Fort Pierce, said he supported the plan. “With some tweaking, I wholeheartedly support this project,” he said. “I see this project as a domino and we’ve already got a lot of great dominos that have fallen over in this county. We have

so much to be proud of in this county.” He did clarify, saying that the commission needs to be careful, so growth doesn’t get out of control and the area become like Fort Lauderdale or Boca Raton and stay “authentic Florida.” Some potential changes include changing zoning distinctions that would allow visitors to stay in resort-zoned property for 353 days total per year, essentially making them full-time residents. The commission discussed bringing it down to six total

ST. LUCIE WEST — A former St. Lucie West Services District Supervisor is back on the board, but his appointment is bittersweet. Everett Child is taking over for the late supervisor Sal Mancuso, who died Dec. 12 after suffering a medical emergency. Two days prior to his death, Mancuso drove his silver Lincoln Town Car into a lake across from Hurricane Grill along Bethany Avenue in St. Lucie West. The District supervisors appointed Child at their last regular meeting, Jan. 6. Child served on the board for eight years, ending his service to the District prior to last year’s election season. “There’s mixed emotions,” Child said. “Sal was a good friend as well as a fellow participant in the district. He took me under his wing before I took office and exchanged information on how things operated.” Child said he was interested in running in the last election for a third straight win, but family health issues took up the brunt of his time. “Although my interest in the board was still high, I just didn’t feel like campaigning effectively because that requires quite a demand on your time,” he said. Gregg Ney was elected to Child’s former seat. Though board positions are usually elected ones, District manager

“Joe kept Aunt Mary out of a Nursing Home...”

Niece Dr. Carol Costas and Aunt Mary

At 97, Aunt Mary is known among her family members as a great storyteller, but there was a time when she was silenced by her inability to hear. Before her new hearing aids, she couldn’t follow instructions or participate in conversations, so she just sat in front if the TV while others waited on her. Like so many others, with hearing impairment, Mary had difficulty accepting that she couldn’t hear. To her loved ones, it was evident. The reality really hit home when Mary couldn’t answer questions posed by doctors or would give incorrect responses or unrelated answers which ultimately led doctors to be concerned that she was developing Alzheimer’s. Her niece, Dr. Carol Costas, became concerned. Aunt Mary had tried other hearing aids, but they were painful and amplified everything, not just voices. “Joe was the first one who could make hearing possible and comfortable. He was patient and kind,” said Dr. Costas. “Joe sat with Aunt Mary until she was comfortable using them and then, he made her come back multiple times until he was satisfied. He saved Aunt Mary from a nursing home, and she is a different person. Now she shops, bakes – she’s social.”

These days, Aunt Mary is spinning yarns and sharing stories, and life is so much more enjoyable for her. She and her niece can’t say enough about the kindness and quality of service they received from Mutter’s Hearing Service. “Helping people hear is not just a job for Joe,” said Dr. Costas. “It is clearly a calling. “ And isn’t it great when a story has a happy ending? TREASURE COAST — The train is coming far as Michael Reininger is concerned. He said 2014 was a banner year for All Aboard Florida. “It was a very productive year,” he said. “It was quite a remarkable set of accomplishments achieved in a relatively short period of time.” Reininger is president of All Aboard Florida, the proposed 235-mile high-speed passenger rail service that’ll connect downtown Miami to the Orlando International Airport. Although it’ll cut a swath through the hearts of Martin and St. Lucie counties, there are no stops planned in either. “The biggest things are the conclusion of the environmental process, and the conclusion of the rest of the financing of the project,” Reininger said. In 2014 the company submitted an Environmental Impact Statement to the Federal Railroad Administration as part of the process for securing an about $1.5 billion Railroad Rehabilitation & Improvement

TREASURE COAST — This time last year, no one had ever heard of Florida Not All Aboard. Few had ever heard of All Aboard Florida. Florida Not All Aboard, which was mostly Palm City’s K.C. Traylor at the time, joined Facebook and started a petition on change.org in the middle of February last year. By summer, All Aboard Florida was a campaign issue in the governor’s race. Hundreds of folks gathered at Flagler Park, Stuart, on a beautiful Sunday, May 4. Traylor stepped onto a platform with a podium and microphone. She looked over the crowd of hundreds of sign-carrying protestors. Her lips curled to a smile. Traylor started railing against the proposed All Aboard Florida with a great orator’s passion. People cheered. “Big choo-choo thinks they’re going to roll though and there’s nothing we can do,” she said as an angry din arose from the protestors. She continued, vividly describing the harsh effects of 32 additional trains traversing the Treasure Coast daily, until hitting a battle cry minutes later.

Dieu vous bénisse, Charlie Hebdo Editor’s note: This column was written in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo massacre last week, in which terrorists killed journalists and cartoonists working for the French satirical magazine. The terrorists claimed the attacks were in retaliation for cartoons mocking the Islamic prophet, Mohammed. The attacks are a grim reminder of why we need to be ever on-guard to protect our freedoms that radicals are willing to kill for. “Excuse me, sir,” the woman said. I stopped doing my tai chi and responded, “Can I help you?” “Yes,” she said. “I’d appreciate it if you’d stop doing that. A few of us are here with our children and don’t want them exposed to that sort of thing.” We were standing in DeLand’s Earl Brown Park. I liked doing taijiquan, tai chi, on the basketball courts when they were empty. I looked at her, seeking signs of jesting. “You’re joking?” I asked. “We’re Christians who love the Lord,” she answered. “We don’t believe in New Age activities like that, and don’t want our children exposed to it.” I nodded in feigned sympathy. “Well, then put them in a hermetically-sealed biosphere with opaque walls until they turn 18,” I answered and went back to doing my physical, mental and spiritual exercise completely unconcerned that their children

Welcome to the eclectic Western World, where people are largely free to believe, speak and do most anything they wish — assuming no violations of reasonable criminal and civil codes, or noise ordinances. The woman has the right to offend me with the request based on absurd presumptions, and I have every legal right to be rude in return. Nobody has any obligation to respect my beliefs, practices and preferences. No one has to respect the taijitu, the symbol most in America call the yin/ yang. Folks can wear the symbol that’s deeply meaningful to me as disrespectfully as they wish on pendants, shirts, pants, bathing suits, even underwear. They

can draw and wear perverse renderings of the taijitu, the yin/ yang, that annoy me. And they do. People can and do slap the taijitu on advertisements to sell everything from surfing boards to alcoholic beverages. People even use “yin/yang” as euphemistic profanity. Gasp. I’m grateful people can do this and have never thought to express displeasure to anyone offending my sensitivities over it. People can flagrantly disrespect the closest thing I have to a holy book, the “Tao Te Ching.” Want to burn a copy? I’ll give you one to do just that, and hold the lighter as you douse it in gasoline. Its words are just a collection of printed letters that take on meaning only when they’re in my heart helping to guide my actions. You can’t touch the “Tao Te Ching” in my heart with a Bic. Last week, the world witnessed again that there are people who put their religious sensitivities above humanity. Gunmen walked into the Paris offices of a satirical weekly newspaper, Charlie Hebdo, and killed in the name of Islam. Whether the two are Muslims isn’t for me to decide — that’s up to those who count themselves as Muslim. The paper offended Cherif and Said Kouachi with sardonic depictions of Muhammad, so they went on a killing rampage. Dramatic, but not the only example of intolerance for real or perceived offense among many who count themselves as Muslims. That emotional fragility is legally codified in some countries. For example, in 2012, Egyptian courts jailed a 17-yearold Coptic Christian for three years for “insulting Islam” on his Facebook page and among friends. Nothing can be said about Islam or any other religion that would warrant three minutes in prison, let alone years. Also in 2012 an adolescent Christian girl with down syndrome in Pakistan was jailed and faced the death sentence on the alleged testimony of a youth to an imam that she’d desecrated pages of the Koran. With no physical evidence any desecration ever happened, crowds in that country demanded the

arrest, and execution of a developmentally disabled child, for violating the country’s blasphemy laws. The imam was later found to have fabricated evidence and the girl was acquitted. Her family had to flee to Canada due to death threats made by people willing to kill on the outside possibility that maybe she might have perhaps dreamed about doing something that could have conceivably offended them on a bad day. When we see the militarized terrorists killing over real or perceived offenses to Islam, usually in Europe these days, remember that the emotional fragility is considered so normal in some Muslim countries that it’s legally codified as a criminal offense worthy of imprisonment or death to offend it. The Western World, too, has emotionally fragile true believers of all sorts who chronically whine on YouTube about being offended. But they don’t kill. Remember Andres Serrano’s repulsive photograph “Piss Christ?” The photo of a crucifix submerged in urine has stirred letter-writing campaigns and vandalism of prints of it since the late ‘80s. The death toll: 0. However, we should also remember that in the not-toodistant past, use of murderous terror to suppress offending messages and preserve dominance was routine in America. On Christmas night, 1951, Harry and Harriette Moore died in a bombing in Mims. They’d offended some folks by speaking out for racial equality, something many at that time believed went against the Bible. Since then, we’ve built up a wall of free-speech case law and hate-crime legislation that help protect our rights to offend others just by being who we are, practicing our beliefs and speaking our minds. Legally it’s my place to decide whom I’ll offend, not any radical’s and certainly not the government’s. It’s others’ places to decide when and how they’ll offend me. Offend away. I rejoice that you can say and do things that offend my deepest beliefs and sensitivities. To the publishers and staff at Charlie Hebdo who worked and died to help ensure no one is above criticism, exposure and ridiculing, Dieu vous bénisse, God bless. Patrick McCallister is a staff writer for Your Voice News & Views and Veteran Voice.

A.E. Backus Museum of Art

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — This time of year brings plenty of visitors from across the globe to visit the Backus Museum. One recent guest from New Hampshire was reading a poster promotion for the upcoming All You Should Eat Backus Brunch and Raffle and he asked me, “What exactly is a grit?” I felt like I was in

RESORT from page A1 months. North Hutchinson Island resident Elizabeth Gibson said she’s worried of overcrowding because population density requirements would have to be changed to allow more people. “The guidelines being considered could result in an overcrowded residential increase on portions of the island and a total downgrading of a place that to date, has

the movie “My Cousin Vinnie.” I explained to him what grits were and that they were even tastier with cheese added, which is how we serve them at the brunch. He took my word for it and bought two tickets to the brunch and three for the Backus Painting raffle. Trust me, they will not be sorry. They may not win the painting, but they will certainly enjoy a gussied up Southern brunch. The signature menu items for the Backus Brunch, held this

year from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, are fresh-fried mahi-mahi, creamy scrambled eggs laced with cream cheese and other secret ingredients, Southern-style biscuits and cheese grits. Naturally, there are all manner of other brunch delights like sausage, pancakes, biscuits and sausage gravy (made from a secret Summerlin family recipe), fresh squeezed Nelson

been well and carefully planned by the state of Florida and by St. Lucie County – a place that provides an environmental experience, making the island uniquely valuable not only for its residents but for the general population,” she said. Dennis Murphy, representing Phil Ruffin, the billionaire who wants to build the resort, said he had an additional 50 letters of support but said he would work to address concerns.

“We are fully cognizant of the concerns proposed with site density,” he said. “Hopefully we will be in a position to address everyone’s concerns.” Doug Davis, a North Hutchinson Island resident, said St. Lucie County needed something similar to the beach-front properties in Vero Beach. “The key is bringing something we lack to St. Lucie County,” he said.

Financing loan from the federal government. In December, the U.S. Department of Transportation gave All Aboard Florida permission to sell about $1.75 billion in bonds issued through Florida Development Finance Corp. Reininger said both represented great progress the company made, along with starting construction on three stations. Construction on the 60,000-squarefoot West Palm Beach station started in November. The station is on Quadrille Boulevard, bounded by Datura and Evernia streets. The 60,000-square-foot Fort Lauderdale station was started in October. The other station is in Miami. Reininger said that by the end of 2016 All Aboard Florida will have its first phase taking passengers between and the Magic and Orchid cities with a stop in between them in Fort Lauderdale. “We ordered the trains, and they started the manufacturing process,” Reininger said. Siemens is constructing the locomotives and passenger coaches in California. The first order was for five trainsets each with two locomotives and four passenger coaches. All Aboard Florida intends to purchase another five trainsets, and expand to seven the number of coaches between locomotives. Reininger said, “2014 was a year when we moved out of the planning and engineering phase and moved into the implementation phase.” But, there was also an eruption of opposition to All Aboard Florida last year. The Treasure Coast is ground zero for Florida Not All Aboard, an opposition group largely organized by Palm City’s K.C. Traylor that thrust the proposed passenger rail into the gubernatorial election’s issues. “There seems to be an awful lot of anxiety driven by a misperception of reality in a couple areas,” Reininger said. A lot of opposition has centered

on the train bridge nestled between the Roosevelt, U.S. Highway 1, and the Dixie Highway bridges in Stuart. Many in the marine industry say that the proposed 32 passenger trains a day will effectively close the St. Lucie River, which is part of the Okeechobee Waterway, to navigation and pretty well end area sailing. The train bridge sits where the North and South forks meet and pool together heading east. Additionally, a lot of opposition has arisen along the Treasure Coast about All Aboard Florida cutting cities, such as Stuart, in two by making it difficult to traverse the Florida East Coast Industry rails that run through them. They say it’ll destroy decades of economic-development work. But, the rallying cry that visibly gets Reininger’s goat is the claim that All Aboard Florida is a sham project intended to gain monies for upgrading tracks for additional freight trains. An oft-repeated opposition slogan is “All Aboard Florida is all about freight.” “The common sense of the misperception is a little puzzling,” Reininger said. “It’s illogical to think All Aboard Florida would invest hundreds of millions buying passenger trains and building passenger stations and take on obligations with passenger transit simply to wind up with an improved rail corridor for freight.” Besides that, Reininger said, Florida East Coast Industries can put plenty more freight on the existing rails with no real investment or regulatory hurdles. “The simple reality of it is there is capacity in the corridor today for more freight,” he said. “It’s simply illogical to think all we’re doing is related to freight.” So, when will the Treasure Coast see those passenger cars, if Reininger’s vision of the future holds true? “Depending on the actual date of the conclusion of the environment process, by 2017 we’ll get all the way into the Orlando International Airport,” he said.

K-9 was deployed to find Ball, who was described as being 6foot tall, thin and wearing red sneakers, and the other man, the report says. Police ordered the men to stop, but they continued to a wooded area. Ball ran north and the other ran south. K-9 Zoran was set loose to find Ball. Officers followed and found Zoran standing over the suspect, presumably barking. “I’m right here. Don’t let that dog bite me,” Ball yelled. Ball was taken into custody and Zoran continued on the

trail but was unable to find the other suspect, though he did find an abandoned sweatshirt and a T-shirt of the popular Duck Dynasty television show. Ball said his accomplice was a man called “Rocko” from Fort Pierce. Ball would not disclose any other information. Police are asking if you have any information that could lead to the identity of the second suspect, call the Port St. Lucie Police Department at (772) 8715001 or Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-800-273 (TIPS). NOT ABOARD from page A3 “We can derail big choo-choo,” Traylor said to cheers. Congressman Patrick Murphy, D-FL-18 took the stage behind Traylor to make clear his opposition to All Aboard Florida. Not so amazing in itself — a congressman speaking at a rally — until one considers that he had signed a letter urging federal regulators to hustle on getting the proposed high-speed rail running. “It was a lot of meetings with a lot of elected officials,” Traylor said in a recent interview. “Congressman Murphy’s office was one of the first I spoke to. They really started to look into the project, and they realized that it wasn’t the project they thought it was when he signed the letter.” In less than three months, the group garnered about 11,000 physical and electronic petition signatures against the proposed passenger rail that would cut a swath through Martin and St. Lucie counties without stopping. That swelled by the end of 2014. “We’re just under 43,000 (signatures),” Traylor said. “I anticipate we’ll be hitting 50,000 before too long.” Before 2014 Traylor was one of many folks occasionally spoke about various issues during public comment at Martin County Commission meetings. But in 2014 she had a meteoric rise to local fame for her efforts to derail All Aboard Florida. Among Florida Not All Aboard’s accomplishments last year was setting the primary campaign issue for the 18 Congressional District’s Republican primary and general election — who hated All Aboard Florida the most. Indeed, in every Treasure Coast political contest, All Aboard Florida came up, and every political candidate opposed it. Sen. Joe Negron even stood beside Traylor at a press conference to announce his opposition to All Aboard Florida in June. That was happening as the Federal Railroad Administration had All Aboard Florida putting together an Environmental Impact Statement as part of fulfilling its request for an about $1.5 billion Railroad Rehabilitation & Improvement Financing loan. Traylor said Florida Not All Aboard had numerous other accomplishments to point to in 2014. Not in the least, she said, was that op-

position appears to have sent the company into damage control. All Aboard Florida originally anticipated starting partial service in 2014 on its proposed rail service that’d run from downtown Miami to the Orlando International Airport. The 235-mile service start year got pushed back and pushed back. Traylor said that’s likely got much to do with the explosion of opposition on the Treasure Coast last year scaring off investors and slowing down regulators. “The (Federal Railroad Administration) now realizes we have over 40,000 people and elected officials watching the process,” she said. In December, the U.S. Department of Transportation gave All Aboard Florida permission to sell about $1.75 billion in bonds issued through Florida Development Finance Corp. Traylor said the decision was disappointing. “The private-activity bond coming the Friday before Christmas was disappointing, but when I look at it, I say, ‘Who’s going to buy it?’ she said. Traylor said federal agencies haven’t signed off on the Environmental Impact Statement, and several local governments have raised objections there’s misinformation in the report on points that they were never consulted about, such as traffic counts at railroad crossings. As the New Year launches, Traylor said Florida Not All Aboard intends to continue doing what it did in 2014: talking to anyone and everyone who’ll listen. In addition to making appearances at government, town-hall and homeowner-association meetings, Traylor is going to resume weekly shows on WSTU, 1450 AM, Stuart. “Our focus is we need to keep momentum up with public awareness and public outrage,” Traylor said. “You go out on the streets, and there are people who still don’t know about (All Aboard Florida).” Additionally, Traylor said Florida Not All Aboard is working to get a multi-jurisdiction summit of elected officials in adversely-affected counties together in February or March. “My focus is uniting everybody,” she said. In the end, Traylor said, 2015 looks to be the make-or-break year for All Aboard Florida. She said public pressure against the project will break it. “The most important message is this is not a done deal,” she said.

Dennis Pickle said the supervisors are able to fill the position by appointment or election. Because Child has extensive history with the district, his appointment was a no-brainer, Pickle said. Pickle took out newspaper ads, promoting the opening. He received five resumes or letters of interest total. “The consensus seemed to be that the board just felt that after interviewing them that he had the strongest resume and experience,” Pickle said. Child will serve the remaining 22

months left on Mancuso’s term. Child said he’s honored to have been selected over the other impressive candidates. “I was up against a lot of good talent and background, and I think any one of them were equal to or superior with education and leadership qualities to me. “I think the remaining members of the board said, ‘Well, we don’t have to retrain Everett,’” he said. Child said he plans to once again serve as a moderate voice on the board. “There will still be differences on the board like any other,” he said. “I think I always lent a steady hand.”

Convicted felon fooled city Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER

bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PORT ST. LUCIE — If you do a quick Google search for the name “Daniel N. Perlmutter,” you’ll find a series of New York Times articles chronicling his surprising demise. What you won’t find is how he lied about his past and fooled the city of Port St. Lucie, among other employers, to get a job as a graphic designer. Once his boss found out, he was fired Dec. 9 for not disclosing his past and leading staff to believe he had a clean criminal record. Perlmutter had a nice career lined up for himself before throwing it all away. He graduated with honors from Williams College and the New York University School of Law. Then the talented 27-yearold found himself working as a federal prosecutor at the United States Attorney’s Office in Manhattan in 1983. Two years went by without incident, but that came crashing to an abrupt end. Perlmutter was found guilty of stealing about $450,000 worth of illegal drugs and $41,800 in cash which were

Dan Perlmutter being held in the State Attorney’s office in a safe used by the narcotics division. He was sentenced to three years in prison, although he was only forced to stay for 16 months. He originally faced a possible 25-year sentence. When he was busted in New York, investigators found 8.7 ounces of heroin and 29 ounces of cocaine that they believe he was intending to sell, a New York Times article states. During one of Perlmutter’s cases in District Court, he told the

judge that drug evidence had gone missing. Perlmutter’s girlfriend had admitted to having a drug problem at the time, but it was unclear whether Perlmutter had one, too. As far as anyone knows, Perlmutter didn’t steal anything from his job with the city of Port St. Lucie, but he failed to show up to work or contact any of his supervisors for 23 days from Nov. 12 to Dec. 5 when he finally called his boss, communications director Ed Cunningham. Two days later, all correspondence was done through Perlmutter’s lawyer, Marty Bonan. The disappearance along with separate allegations of his past prompted staff to investigate him, according to city emails. Perlmutter worked as a graphic designer with the city since 2007, when he was hired a former communications director, and left considerable gaps on his resume that never raised any red flags. He left off his law degree and the years which he attended high school and college. Though, the city’s application didn’t require them at the time.

He entirely left off any mention of job history, prior to 1995, which would have included his past job and conviction, Cunningham said in a letter to Perlmutter. “If the rest of your resume is to be believed, one of the jobs you held involved the handling and processing of job applications. You are a knowledgeable person who successfully exploited the

cess,” Cunningham told him. Prior to working for the city, Perlmutter worked as a creative designer for Martin Memorial Health System and an administrative assistant at St. Lucie Medical Center. In the letter, Cunningham said he questioned whether Perlmutter would have been hired, had the city been aware of his prior conviction.

“You were brazen enough to steal from a prior employer … I am even unsure whether you have committed similar acts here in this department,” he said. Port St. Lucie Human Resources director Susan Williams said a felony won’t always disqualify an applicant, but it would certainly make it harder for the person to get the job.

Tradition veterans home to be named the Ardie R. Copas State Veterans’ Nursing Home Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

TRADITION — Shyrell Herrera, daughter of Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Ardie Ray Copas, likes living in Tennessee. But she wanted to move back to her native St. Lucie County after word broke that the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs was recommending to Gov. Rick Scott and the Florida Cabinet to name the next state veterans nursing home the Ardie R. Copas State Veterans’ Nursing Home. “I want to move there and walk around talking to everyone (in the home),” she said. “I would sing to them.”

At press time, the state veterans department executive director, Mike Prendergast, is slated ask the governor and cabinet to approve the name at their next regular meeting — Tuesday, Jan. 13. Wayne Teegardin, St. Lucie County’s Veteran Services manager, said he was told that the request is a formality and that the name is pretty well now on the signs. “What they’ve shared with me is it’s not going to go to a vote,” Teegardin said. “The Cabinet does not have to vote for it. Prendergast is going to recommend it, and they’ll accept his recommendation.” At the Sept. 23 regular meeting the governor and cabinet opted to put the next veterans home in Tra-

The Taste of Little Italy was established in 2008 to create an experience rich in Italian culture that celebrates the contributions of great Italian through food, music, art and tradition for the entire family to enjoy. Today, the organizers of both the Taste of Little Italy (Port St. Lucie) and the Feast of Little Italy (Jupiter) remain dedicated to the importance of family and community and ever mindful of the hardships endured by Italian ancestors that migrated to this great country. The Taste and the Feast along with their community commitment has resulted in over $100,000 in direct and in-kind contributions to local charitable organizations, including Little Smiles, St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Palm Beach Food Bank, Big Dog Ranch Rescue and many more. Major corporations have made longterm commitments to the Taste as part of their brand awareness strategies, including Tradition Florida, Banfi, Bolla, Garber Buick, and Garber GMC. Each year, families gather and pass through the gates of the Taste of Little Italy to share old traditions and create new memories. For the schedule updates and activities,

Once a hiring manager chooses an applicant to hire, he or she then goes through a background check, Williams said. Depending on the position, candidate backgrounds are investigated differently. Because he was being hired as a graphic designer and not working with children or the elderly, Williams said Perlmutter’s background check probably wasn’t exhaustive and lacked a fingerprint check. “We’ve changed our process to

COPAS from page A17 dition. Construction of the facility is likely to start next fall, Steve Murray, communications director at the state veterans department, has repeatedly told Veteran Voice. The last home, the Clyde E. Lassen State Veterans’ Nursing Home in St. Augustine, took about two years to complete. State veterans homes are named after deceased Medal of Honor recipients who have ties to the areas they’re located. The St. Lucie County Commission unanimously voted on Oct. 7 to ask the governor and cabinet to name the Tradition facility in honor of Copas, a Fort Pierce native. Copas is now among of the

revered Valor 24 Medal of Honor recipients. In 2002 Congress mandated a review of records to discover if there were Jewish, Hispanic, black and other minority service members wrongfully passed over for the Medal of Honor due to possible discrimination. After a laborious, decade-long search, Pentagon researchers found 24 who concluded would have received the Medal of Honor much under other circumstances. President Barack Obama presented the 24 in one of the largest Medal of Honor ceremonies ever. That was on March 18. There was a headstone monument dedication for Copas, on Nov. 8, at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Fort Pierce. His headstone now shows

him to be a Medal of Honor recipient. Two others were nominated for naming the veterans home: Sgt. 1 Class Paul R. Smith, Tampa, and Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller, Oviedo. Smith died April 4, 2003, in Iraq. Miller died Jan 25, 2008, in Afghanistan. Herrera said shortly after her father received the Medal of Honor, she started writing St. Lucie and Fort Pierce officials asking them to find something to name after him. She said Wayne Teegardin called her shortly after the cabinet voted to put the nursing home in Tradition asking if she would back efforts to name the facility for her father.

“It’s very dear to me because I used to sing at nursing homes when I was in a church youth group,” she said. “I just love elderly people, and elderly veterans are my favorite.” Her aunt and uncle ran a church in Okeechobee, Helping Hands Ministry, Herrera attended its services. “From about 12 to 15, 16 years old, we used to go to the Okeechobee (nursing) home,” Herrera said. When done, the veteran’s home on Tradition Parkway will have 120 to 128 single-occupancy rooms and generate about $7 million a year in wages among nearly 200 workers, Murray said.

Port St Lucie, FL- The most common method your doctor will recommend to treat your neuropathy is with prescription drugs that may temporarily reduce your symptoms. These drugs have generic names such as Gabapentin, Lyrica, or Cymbalta and are primarily antidepressant or anti-seizure drugs. These drugs may cause you to feel uncomfortable and have a variety of harmful side effects.

As you can see in Figure 2 , as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not get the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die” they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning and many additional symptoms. l blood these very smal Figure2: When seased they begin di e vessels becom the nerves begin to d to shrivel up an . te ra ne ge de

The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. As long as you have not sustained at least 85% nerve damage then your condition can been treated

In order to effectively treat your neuropathy three factors must be determined. 1. What is the underlying cause? 2. How Much Nerve Damage Has Been Sustained. NOTE: Once you have sustained 85% nerve loss, there is nothing that we can do for you.

3. How much treatment will your condition require?

The treatment that is provided at our clinic has three main goals: 1. Increase blood flow

The main problem is that your doctor has told you to just live with the problem or try the drugs which you don’t like taking because they make you feel uncomfortable. There is now a facility right here on the Treasure Coast that offers you hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side effects. (see the special neruopathy severity examination at the end of this article)

2. Stimulates small fiber nerves

Dr. John Silva will be offering this neuropathy severity examination from now until Friday, January 16, 2015 Call to make an appointment Dr. Silva to determine if with D your peripheral neuropathy can be treated.

Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow.

Dr. John Silva at our Functional Medicine Practice will do a neuropathy severity examination to determine the extent of the nerve damage for only $70. This neuropathy severity examination will consist of a detailed sensory evaluation, extensive peripheral vascular testing and a detailed analysis of the findings of your neuropathy.

Family Farms orange juice, Plant City strawberries, etc., but the Brunch is really all about fish, eggs, biscuits and grits. The question begs to be asked. Why? When A.E. “Bean” Backus was born in Fort Pierce in 1906, it was a sleepy little fishing village. Fish was the main stay of the local diet and was eaten sometimes three meals a day. Fresh pork was a luxury as was fresh bacon. Salt pork was the staple, and it is more for cooking than for eating. Keeping chickens was virtually universal, so eggs were plentiful. Biscuits are well, just biscuits. And as every Southerner already knows, it just ain’t breakfast without grits. So, historically a Florida Cracker breakfast would have been comprised of fish, eggs, biscuits and grits. Since we are the A.E. Backus Museum & Gallery, we want to stay true, or at least close, to the preferences of our founder, A.E. Backus. Backus was primarily a vegetarian; eschewing the consumption of any creature he could love. As Bean stated to me many times, “chickens and fish were too stupid to love,” so he ate them. Cows and pigs were more intelligent, so he chose not to eat them. In fact, for a period of time he had a pet pig who lived in the

WWW.YOURVOICEWEEKLY.COM Old Studio, then located at 103 Avenue C, an address that no longer exists, thanks to the construction of the now-demolished, but not forgotten, King Power Plant. Ah, but I digress. Back to the point. Pretty much every day at 6 a.m., Backus ate breakfast with his commercial fishermen friends; first at Simonsen’s Restaurant (which is long gone but used to be located near the end of Fisherman’s Wharf) and then later at the Captain’s Galley (pretty much everyone knows where that is.) Without fail, he ate fish, eggs, biscuits and grits, all of which explains why we serve those iconic Florida Cracker foods at our brunch. We serve all the other tasty goodies to keep our guests happy. Without all the extras, it would not be a brunch but simply a breakfast, and that is not nearly as much fun. We are expecting well over 500 to attend this shindig. You too can enjoy an authentic Florida Cracker breakfast along with all the tasty extras on Sunday, March 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tickets are $12.50 in advance and $15 at the door. The Inner Truth Project hosts screening of ‘Playground: the film’ Jan. 23 FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

TREASURE COAST — The Inner Truth Project is hosting a public screening of “Playground: the film,” a full-length documentary about the child sex trade in America followed by a panel discussion. The film is being shown Friday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m. at The Inner Truth Project, located at 2190 Reserve Park Trace, No.13, St. Lucie West. A $5 donation is requested at the door to attend, and all proceeds benefit The Inner Truth Project. The Junior League of Martin County is donating the use of the documentary. “Florida is one of the top three states in the United States for sex trafficking,” said Mindi Fetterman, president and founder of The Inner Truth Project. “It’s estimated that 200,000 American children are at risk for trafficking into the sex industry. We must learn to recognize the signs of a

human trafficking victim, how to effectively help and how to protect ourselves and our family from being trafficked.” Often thought to be an issue occurring only in developing countries, “Playground: the film” exposes the sexual exploitation of children in America. Libby Spears’ investigation reveals that very little thrives in the world without American capital and the commercial child sex industry is flourishing. She traces the epidemic to its disparate roots including the way children are educated about sex, and the problem of raising awareness about a crime that inherently cannot be shown. The film also delves into cultural observations and the search for Michelle, an American girl lost to the underbelly of child sexual exploitation who has yet to resurface. The documentary was execu-

ST. LUCIE WEST — With such a high hearing loss prevalence in America, it may be time to get a checkup. According to the Better Hearing Institute, about 30 percent of those 60 and older experience some sort of hearing loss, and the problem is rising among kids. An American Academy of Pedi-

atrics study published in August showed hearing loss problems for kids rose 15 percent from 2001 to 2011. Without getting proper care in the early stages of hearing loss, the problem only escalates, Joe Mutter, owner of Mutter’s Precision Hearing Center along St. Lucie West Boulevard. “Untreated hearing loss is an epidemic in the U.S.,” Mutter said.

MUTTER from page A29

Gather toGether at our place, your way

Here at The Brennity at Tradition, you can continue living the life you’ve worked so hard for, on your own terms. Enjoy the freedom to participate in as many events and activities as you’d like, or spend your days in leisure. The choice is yours at our beautiful community.

Mutter encourages others to do as Carmela Buhrman did and schedule a free appointment at his office. Buhrman said she noticed her hearing slowly deteriorated and asked a friend what she should do. “She said ‘Why don’t you try my guy?’” Buhrman got outfitted with hearing aids and said she feels like she’s living in a new world. “I didn’t know it was a noisy world out there. I hear things I’ve never heard before,” she said. “When I go out to get my newspaper, I hear the birds singing. I hear the clock on my wall … I can hear in church now. That’s big for me.” Mutter exclusively uses hearing aids from Starkey Hearing Aids, the only American-owned and operated hearing aid company, Mutter said. Mutter opened his business in 2002 after a 24-year long law enforcement career. He said it was time to get out and pursue his vision of the American dream — owning his own business. Mutter’s brother-in-law had a hearing center in Stuart, so Mutter spent some time toward the end of his law enforcement career shadowing him, learning the

WWW.YOURVOICEWEEKLY.COM ins and outs of the business. By the time he retired from the force, he chose to go to school to open his own practice to continue helping people with his work. Over 12 years later, he has over 3,000 clients. One of the big things Mutter wants people to understand is that he works to do the right thing and be up front with people about what he can’t do as a hearing specialist, especially considering they may soon be paying thousands of dollars to treat their hearing. “The feedback I get back from my clients is ‘Well, I went to the other place, and they told me that I’d hear like I was 20 again.’ Well, that’s not true. You’re going to hear significantly better … To do the right thing, I tell them ‘you’re going to hear significantly better, but it’s going to take some work to get there. “That’s part of doing the right thing. Taking the time to make sure that folks understand the level of technology and to understand where their hearing is at.” Mutter is the only specialist at his office because he says he wants to guarantee people are getting quality and service, rather than risk someone having a bad experience. “I’ve been a part of this community since 1985. I’m not here to just show up and get a paycheck.”

BACKUS from page A28 to win. While you are enjoying the Brunch, take time to look at this year’s Tribute to Backus Exhibition hanging in the Museum. The exhibition, titled “The Power of Patronage,” features the private collection of the Binney Putnam Family. Eighty-three years in the making and spanning five generations, the collection encompasses the entire breadth of Backus’ work. A.E. Backus was a prolific painter who knew great success during his lifetime. There are literally hundreds of thousands of talented artists that no one of us has ever heard of and never will hear of. Besides raw talent, what is it that separates those unsung artists from a lauded artist like A.E. Backus? Could it be patronage? Backus’ first significant patron was Dorothy Binney Putnam, daughter of Edwin Binney, inventor of the Crayola Crayon and wife of famed publisher, G.P. Putnam. In 1931, Dorothy recognized Backus’ raw talent and launched his career by hosting his first art exhibit at her home located in the Casa Caprona Apartments, a development built by her father. What began as a near charitable gesture in 1931 blossomed

into a lifelong friendship and an impressive collection of Backus paintings. Dorothy’s third husband, Don Blanding, poet, artist and self-described vagabond, was also pivotal in promoting Backus during the early part of his career, through his weekly column in the News Tribune. For this once in a lifetime exhibit, the heirs of Dorothy Binney Putnam have generously loaned the Museum selected works by A.E. Backus from their collections. Most have never been exhibited before and may never be again. The exhibition is on display from Jan. 16- March 6. The All You Should Eat Backus Brunch and Raffle Drawing will be held on Sunday, March 1 at the A.E. Backus Museum, rain or shine. The museum is located at 500 N. Indian River Drive, along the waterfront in historic downtown Fort Pierce. Brunch and Raffle tickets may be in purchased at the Museum during regular hours: Wednesday – Saturday, 10 – 4 p.m., Sunday, noon – 4 p.m. The museum is closed on Monday and Tuesday. For additional information, please contact the Museum at (772) 465-0630.

“We got everything we needed to keep caring fo‰ Dad at home.” “My dad had Alzheimer’s disease for years, and Vivian and I took care of him in our home. A friend told me how Treasure Coast Hospice can help. They provided Dad’s medications, a wheelchair, a shower chair and oxygen. The RN and hospice aide showed us their love and patience as they helped us give Dad all the care he needed. We suggest calling Treasure Coast Hospice as early as possible.”

One-man play tackles biggest mysteries of life Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

VERO BEACH – The play “Underneath the Lintel” by Glen Berger has an intriguing premise. The only character, known as the Librarian, finds a returned book. It is a travel guide, a Baedeker, that is 113 years overdue. He searches library records and finds that it was borrowed by someone known only as “A.” The Librarian is determined to find the borrower and takes a leave of absence from his job. He follows clues that include a 73-yearold dry cleaning ticket he finds in the book. That ticket sends him to London, the first stop in a trip around the world, following artifact after artifact. What starts as an obsession to find the person who returned the book turns into a trip of self-exploration with mystical and biblical overtones. “Underneath the Lintel” will be presented on the Waxlax Stage at the Riverside Theatre Jan. 27-31. The play, which was first produced in 2001, has been staged off-Broadway and on London’s West End. It was named Best Solo Show at the 2012 London Fringe Festival and Best of Fest at the 2013 Orlando Fringe Festival. Jim VanValen, who heads the acting program at Cornell College in Iowa and is the current theater department chair, will play the Librarian. A New York native, he received a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s in theater from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He has performed at the Riverside five times and met his wife, Brenda, there when both were performing in “She Loves Me.”

VanValen, who is on sabbatical this semester, spoke about this play and about returning to the Riverside. “I saw it at the Soho Playhouse (in New York,)” he said. “It was one of the earliest productions. I loved the piece. It’s an engaging piece. I liked the relationship between the actor and the audience. What I love about theater is that it happens in the ‘now.’ This is clear in this production. We are in a different time and place and exactly right here and now.” VanValen noted that the play’s subtitle is “An Impressive Presentation of Lovely Evidences.” He said that it is a mystery who the Librarian hopes to find at the end of his quest. “At first, since it’s 113 years overdue, he’s thinking it must have been returned by a great-great- grandson. As he becomes more intrigued and follows the trail, the idea of what’s possible is brought into question, and the miraculous is lurking right before our noses. There is a sense that something beyond the possible and probable can be found within a book or just be stepping outside our doorways. Making those connections beyond the everyday is exactly what live theater asks us to do, to share the moment.” VanValen is pleased to be returning to the Riverside and to be working with the theater’s artistic director, Allen Cornell. “I’m excited,” he said. “I haven’t been there in almost a decade, since before it was redone. I’m excited to work with Allen again. He’s such a kind soul and talented director and set designer. It’s a real treat. We’re glad to leave Iowa in the midst of winter and be in Florida. We can visit with family. It’s worked out so perfectly. The play has stayed with me

(since I saw it) and to have the opportunity to do it is pretty great.” “Underneath the Lintel,” by Glen Berger, will be presented on the Waxlax Stage at Riverside Theatre, 3250 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach, January 27-31. Performances are Jan. 27-31 at 8 p.m. and Jan. 28 and 31 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $40. For more information, call the box office at (772) 231-6990 or visit the website www.riversidetheatre.com.

Arbor Day at the Botanical Gardens, starting at 11 a.m. Open to the public at no charge. Arbor Day holds a long tradition and special place in the hearts of many individuals. Although the rest of the country celebrates Arbor Day on the fourth Friday in April, the third Friday in January is the official date of Florida Arbor Day, due to the state’s subtropical climate. The ceremony will begin with a prayer blessing the tree, followed by a recitation of an Arbor Day poem and the reading of names of loved ones being memorialized. A tree will then be planted in the Gardens, identified with a plaque, commemorating its year of planting. The community is invited to remember those who passed, honor a living legend or celebrate a life event with participation in the remembrance tree program.
