PORT ST. LUCIE — What good is a city in a beautiful climate zone if it’s overlooked by potential residents and business owners? “This will be taking the strategic plan and pull in the public’s input and then market it,” Port St. Lucie Mayor Greg Oravec said. “To my knowledge, we’ve never had a marketing plan,” Oravec said. Rojas, 33, spent the previous three seasons managing the Savannah Sand Gnats, the Mets Single-A affiliate. Rojas led the Sand Gnats to playoffs appearances the last two seasons and

You always hear about how good a league the FSL is for its travel and facilities because of spring training. I know I have some big shoes to fill after the success of the last two managers

Mutter’s Hearing Center, Inc. Providing superior products, service and care with honest and competitive pricing since 2003 The Only Full Time Hearing Center in St. Lucie West

I’m Embarrassed.................... After seeing the Monday morning daily newspaper and the plethora of hearing aid ads, I just had to sit back and wonder....why? The ads that offered cheap hearing aids or limited time offers or limited opportunities to try their hearing aids were confusing to me.

Joe Mutter, H.A.S.

Not one of those ads talked about their service, their experience or their quality. They just pushed a cheap hearing aid, thinking that was the most important feature to their potential customers and not the quality of their hearing.

I can completely understand why so many of my clients come into my office frustrated and confused about the investment in a high quality hearing aid. Remember, you get what you pay for. We have never and will never be a part of “bait and switch” advertising.

At Mutters Hearing Center you get the same old stuff. If by same old stuff you mean a high level of service, care, follow up and quality products that most of us grew up expecting and experiencing. We offer the top of the line, state of the art hearing aids but our difference is the quality of care and service that goes along with our products. You work only with the owner, not a commissioned sales person. I take personal pride in fitting the right hearing aid to the individual. Then working with that person for weeks, months or years making sure that their hearing experience is everything that it could possibly be.

Please call for an appointment and let me show you the difference I bring to this industry.

Clarinets way to bridge cultures STAFF WRITER

MARTIN COUNTY — Katherine Palmer grew up in Palm City and attended Hidden Oaks Middle School and Martin County High School. The clarinetist attended the University of Miami and received as master’s degree in ethnomusicology and a doctorate in clarinet performance and pedagogy. Her master’s thesis was on social reform and music education, reflecting a long-standing interest in music as an instrument of change. In graduate school, Palmer met Michele Von Haugg, who founded Clarinets for Conservation. Von Haugg invited Palmer to come on the group’s annual trip to Tanzania, where they provide free musical instruction to secondary students. Tanzania was chosen because wood from the African Blackwood, or mpingo, the national tree of the country, is used to make clarinets, as well as oboes, piccolos and other instruments. Deforestation is occurring at an unsustainable rate and Clarinets

for Conservation tries to bridge the gap between product and the product source. Palmer went to Tanzania when she finished her degrees and two and a half years ago, she came on board as assistant director of the organization. Although she is based in Phoenix, where she works at the Musical Instrument Museum, she returns to the Treasure Coast to do outreach several times a year. Her mother, Karin Palmer, lives in St. Lucie West. On Feb. 21, Clarinets for Conservation will hold a Treasure Coast Clarinet Day at Jensen Beach High School. Professional musicians, local K-12 students and community members are invited to participate in a day of group lessons, master classes and an evening performance. “We’ve invited students from Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties,” Palmer said. “There are great music programs here.” Jensen Beach High School was chosen as the site because of the enthusiasm of its students. In a written statement, Tom Dougherty, director of

bands at the school, said he and his students were excited to be a part of the program. “The Jensen Beach High School Band is honored to be a part of the inaugural Treasure Coast Clarinet Day. As a music edu-

cator, I am always searching for events and opportunities for my students to further their love, passion and understanding of music and their instruments. I am particularly enthusiastic to

ORAVEC from page A1 attends. Oravec said the first widely-publicized community meeting had the largest turnout he’s seen for one. The free pizza Oravec brought people probably didn’t hurt turnout either. “It’s so important to take it to the public and that’s why I’m so excited for the spring,” he said. “It was really well-attended, it was productive and we definitely want more of those kinds of meetings.” There will be community conversations with the mayor, more marketing discussions and a series of talks about the river in the coming months, which will all be posted on Facebook and the city’s website, Oravec said. City staff also invited area marketing experts to get their input. Stacey Ranieri, of the Firefly Group in Palm City made a presentation and said the city needs to stick to its strengths. Whether the marketing talks will progress into something more formal – like hiring an outside firm to help – and costly remains to be seen. “You’re going to see some more action on that to see if we can find some funding and a timeframe,” Oravec said. “Most people in Port St. Lucie

“You’re going to see some more action on that (marketing) to see if we can find some funding and a timeframe.” Greg Oravec Mayor, Port St. Lucie

Greg Oravec want to see more jobs, better wages, and we also have areas in the city awaiting development. It’s not about new construction. We should be marketing those sites,” he said. “All that infrastructure costs money, and all the utility customers pay for that …we’re all paying more and will be paying more until we get more utility customers.” Marketing the area to new customers shouldn’t be much of a problem, though. All the staff – or an eventual agency – has to do is cater to the City’s obvious strengths and downplay the obvious recent blunders that have cost it nearly $1 billion is debt, which Oravec addressed, down-

playing the need to update the city’s seal or slogan. “Now is not the time to deal with the logo and the tagline. Now is the time to deal with Digital Domain, City Center, Torrey Pines, biotech, economic development and excellent customer service. Let’s focus on our challenges and our mission and after we have those addressed, we can focus on the slogan and tagline,” he said. “I think we just need to focus on the basics first. “We can market by focusing on our strengths … location location location. Not only are we in southeast Florida, we are located between the Miami and Orlando metro area. We link both. We offer the Florida lifestyle – the water, the woods. I don’t know where you market those amenities together. You put those together, and it’s an attractive area.”

METS from page A1 Pedro Lopez and Ryan Ellis.” Rojas is the 16th field manager in St. Lucie Mets history. He takes over for Ellis, who will now serve as a minor league hitting coordinator for all the Mets short season clubs. Ellis managed St. Lucie from 2012-14. In that time no Florida State League team won more games than St. Lucie. Overall this will be the 11th season for Rojas in the Mets organization. Prior to managing Savannah he was the manager of the Gulf Coast League Mets in 2011. In 2010 Rojas was a coach for Savannah. Before that he was a coach in the GCL from 2008-09. Rojas spent 2007 as a coach with the Mets Dominican Summer League team. In 2006 he managed the Washington Nationals Dominican Summer League team. As a player, Rojas played in the Baltimore Orioles, Florida Marlins and Montreal Expos/Washington National minor league systems from 1999-2005. Phil Regan returns to St. Lucie for his seventh season as pitching coach. Regan, 77, served as the Chicago Cubs pitching coach from 1997-98 and was the Cleveland Indians pitching coach in 1999. He managed teams in the Venezuelan Winter League from 1989-2009. Regan pitched in 551 major league games and made 105 starts over 13 seasons. He played for Detroit, Los Angeles (NL), the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox. He made the NL All Star team in 1966 and went 14-1 with a 1.62 ERA as a reliever in 1996. Joel Fuentes returns to St. Lucie for his second season as hitting coach. It will be his ninth year with the Mets organization. Fuentes, 38, was the hitting coach on Rojas’ Savannah staff from 2012-13. He had a previous stint as St. Lucie hitting coach from 2010-11. As a player, Fuentes signed with the San Francisco Giants in 1997 and played in their organization until 2003, advancing to Double-A. Matt Hunter returns for his second season as St. Lucie’s athletic trainer. Hunter, 34, was also the St. Lucie trainer from 2009-10.

Luis Rojas From 2011-13 he was the trainer for the Double-A Binghamton Mets. This will mark Hunter’s 11th season in the Mets system. In 2004 he graduated from the University of Florida with a master of science degree in athletic training/ sports management. Tristan McLaren joins St. Lucie as the new strength and conditioning coach. It is McLaren’s second season with the Mets. In 2014 he was the strength coach for Kingsport of the short season Appalachian League. McLaren, 29, received his master’s from Ithaca College in Human Performance and his bachelor of science degree in biology at Hofstra. From 2012-13, he was a graduate assistant strength coach at Ithaca College. “I like our staff a lot,” Rojas said. “I’ve never worked with Phil, but I’ve always heard good things. He’s a legend in Latin America as a Winter League manager and pitching coach. I’ve worked with Joel in the past, and he’s done an excellent job as a hitting coach. I’m looking forward to working with Matt and Tristan. I think this staff will have great chemistry and it should be a great season with this group of guys.” The St. Lucie Mets open their season on April 9 at Tradition Field vs. the Bradenton Marauders. ST. LUCIE WEST — It can be easy to fall into a rut when it comes to one’s career. The daily grind can become overwhelming and discouraging, but there are ways to get over that hump. Katz Eye Center owner Dr. Alexander Katz said his passion to continue learning and becoming an expert in his field is what makes him love his job throughout the ups and downs. He also thinks that’s what sets him apart from the rest. He reads journals, attends conferences, talks to esteemed colleagues about their practices and maintains necessary educational credits to keep all accreditations. He’s had his own practice along Northwest Lake Whitney Place by Tradition Field since May 2014 and has been practicing altogether since 2006 in Palm Beach and Martin counties. He’s earned biochemistry and economics bachelor’s degrees from Yale and attended medical school at Stony Brook University in New York. “I always wanted to be a doctor,” Katz said. “I really like the fact that you can truly benefit patients. For almost every condition an ophthalmologist treats, there is a treatment that you can

institute, and the gratification is almost instantaneous in many cases. Patients truly notice the benefit in what we do.” The biggest joy is for Katz is the direct feedback from customers, Katz said. “You get the most grateful patients in almost all of medicine,” he said, referring to the field of ophthalmology. What makes his practice tick is an amazing staff paired with a prime location full of retirees and baby boomers for his line of work to boom, he said. “Business is really great. I think there’s probably a shortage of physicians in my specialty, so I’ve noticed a lot of growth.” Katz spends about three days a week in his office and spends one or two in surgery. He can do some minor surgeries like eyelid, laser and his specialty, cataract, in his office. He keeps up with cataract lenses to give patients the best customization possible. “I have experience in planting them all, and you can basically custom-tailor patients’ visual demands with a lens implant. “A pilot may have different visual demands than a seamtress. Someone who sits behind a computer all day have different visual needs than a golfer. A pilot has more of a distance visual de-

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Hoping to dispel any rumors before they get started, St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara announced Thursday that he’s running for re-election. “I’m announcing early to ensure our community the same effective, cost-conscious and handson leadership it has experienced since I took office. I also want to let any would-be challengers know that I have every intention of staying right here, doing a job that I love,” Mascara said. Mascara, a Democrat, has been sheriff since 2000 when he won his first. He then won re-election bids in 2004, 2008 and 2012. Mascara touted his record, yet promised to not become complacent. “We’ve had some incredible successes in our community – crime in the county is down 17 percent from last year, almost 28 percent since I took office, we have a jail that serves as a model to others in the state with 10 years in a row of accreditation, and a culture within our office that constantly strives to learn, improve

What will be discussed?

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The St. Lucie County Tax Collector’s Office kicked off the new year with two new additions. A new communications manager and human resources director joined Chris Craft’s team in January. Fifth-generation St. Lucie County resident Jayne Johnson graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor’s of science degree in public relations. Upon graduation, Johnson joined a local public relations firm. She has a background in agricultural communications, media relations, social media management and other various skills. “I grew up visiting my great-grandmother, former Tax Collector Dorothy Jo Conrad, at the tax collector’s office,” Johnson said. “Joining the tax collector’s team is more than an occupation — it is working in the county I grew up in and continuing my great-grandmother’s legacy.” Collette Gotte brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the office. She has over 30 years’ experience in all areas of human resources, holds an MBA from Long Island University and cer-

tifications in human resources, compensation and benefits. “I’m very excited to be part of Chris’s team and am looking forward to working with him and his awesome staff,” Gotte said. “We’re thrilled to add new professionals to the office and would like to welcome Collette and Jayne to our team,” said Chris Craft, St. Lucie County tax collector. The St. Lucie County Tax Collector, Chris Craft, has two offices located in Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie, open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The two offices handle property taxes, tax certificates, alarm permits, tourist development, motor vehicle registration, driver licenses, motorized vessel registration, mobile home registration, disabled parking, hunting and fishing licenses, and local business taxes. Murphy introduces legislation to reduce barriers to post 9/11 GI bill

Helping Your Small Business Get Off The Ground When it comes to your business’s success, the sky’s the limit. Talk to us today about what we can do for you.

FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Yesterday, U.S. Representatives Patrick E. Murphy, D-Fla., and Luke Messer R-Ind., introduced bipartisan legislation to cover college, graduate and vocational school application fees for service members under the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Murphy and Messer are joined by over 60 cosponsors from both parties. “After fighting for our nation and risking everything, it’s our duty to make sure our troops are provided with the care and support they deserve,” Murphy said. “The increasingly high cost of college application fees has created an obstacle for veterans wishing to go to college and pursue their careers. This bill would remove that hurdle so that the brave men and women in our armed forces — the best-trained in the world — can

take full advantage of the Post9/11 GI Bill and translate their leadership abilities and skills into the job market.” This legislation was first introduced as part of a broader package of bills following Murphy’s troop visit to Afghanistan last May. In the 113th Congress, the Reducing Barriers for Veterans Education Act (H.R. 4793) received support from more than 90 members of Congress from both parties and from veterans organizations including the American Legion, Student Veterans of America, Paralyzed Veterans of America, the Association of the United States Navy, and the Retired Enlisted Association. Murphy has been a strong advocate on veteran’s affairs issues, leading efforts to reduce the VA backlog and improve mental health and suicide prevention for service members and veterans.

Reps. Murphy, Buchanan demand action on VA backlog FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S Representatives Patrick E. Murphy, D-Fla., and Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., sent a letter to Veterans Affairs Under Secretary of Benefits Allison Hickey demanding answers and immediate action to address the current backlog of claims at the Veteran Administration’s St. Petersburg Regional Benefits Office impacting Florida veterans and families. The St. Petersburg Regional Benefits Office is the only facility in Florida to process disability benefits and is responsible for serving over 1.5 million veterans across the state. As of December 2014, more than 34,000 claims were pending, over half of which had been backlogged for more than 125 days. “This backlog is completely unacceptable and is preventing our veterans from receiving benefits they have earned,” Murphy said. “Our service members have

risked everything for this country, and it is our duty to see that they are given the respect and support they deserve. That is why we are demanding accountability for these unacceptable delays. I look forward to continuing to work with Congressman Buchanan on solutions to reduce the backlog for Florida’s veterans.” “The backlog at St. Petersburg Regional is inexcusable and demands immediate attention,” Buchanan said. “Veterans who risk life and limb for this country deserve all the care and respect a grateful nation can offer.” In the letter, Murphy and Buchanan call upon the VA to outline what steps have been made to address this backlog and to evaluate procedures, resources, and technology to correct these delays for veterans. Murphy has been a leader on efforts to reduce the backlog and

Two student athletes show off talents at NFL Punt, Pass and Kick Championship Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER

bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TREASURE COAST — Elizabeth Moberg, 14, wasn’t set on winning the NFL Punt, Pass & Kick Championship, but she came pretty close. Moberg, a sophomore Martin County High School soccer goalie, finished fourth in the 14-15 age group, among 31 other competitors. The competition features kids from all over the nation and scores them on how far and accurate they can punt, pass and kick. This year’s final was held in CenturyLink Field — home of the defending Superbowl Champions, the Seattle Seahawks -- before a playoff matchup between the Seahawks and Carolina Panthers. “It was pretty cool. I wasn’t in it

to win it. I was in it for the experience,” Moberg said. While she was there, Moberg even got to try on a Superbowl ring and run through the same tunnels the players do before each home game. Seattle Seahawk fans are likely the loudest in the nation for home games, and Moberg said it was exciting to be in that environment. “You always hear about how loud it gets, but I didn’t think it would be that loud,” she said. “There was a lot of excitement, and it was super loud.” Moberg, representing the Miami Dolphins, finished fourth with a total of 288 feet, 1 inch — her furthest attempt being a punt of 101 feet, 4 inches. The top score in her bracket was 326 feet, 9 inches by Molly Saylor, representing the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Port St. Lucie resident finished 4th in her age group. Her time as a soccer goalie and being active in many sports helped her along, Moberg said. “When you’re in goal, you have to kick the ball for a goal kick. It was easier for me to place it,” she said. Moberg got the idea to try her

luck year from her younger sister, who won last year’s completion in the 6- to 7-year-old bracket. “I figured since she did it, I should give it a shot,” she said. Moberg’s father and soccer

You’ve worked too hard to let this economy jeopardize your future.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Long known for its unique benefits to help local families and individuals in crisis, the Van Duzer Foundation is the latest recipient of the Dyer Difference Award. While the mission of the Van Duzer Foundation, founded by Lake Charles resident Scott Van Duzer, has always been to help individuals and families in St. Lucie County who are struggling emotionally and financially because of unforeseen circumstances, the group of community volunteers has also always advocated for blood donation and encouraged community members to donate food to help ensure that no family goes hungry in our community. Last year, the group took the bold step of creating Scout Troop No. 772, a Boy Scout troop specifically designed for at-risk

PGA VILLAGE — Port St. Lucie writer and poet Dorothy Kamm’s poem “Land of Mist and Moon” has been chosen for inclusion in “Poems of the Super Moon,” the latest in the Pen Women Press’s collection of poetry by members of the National League of American Pen Women. The title of the book was inspired by a line in a poem by Modesto Branch Pen Woman Nancy Haskett that every poet should have a “moon poem.” The contest was launched at the time of the August 2014 Super Moon celestial event. Kamm has won past poetry contests sponsored by the NLAPW and had another poem, “Cooking Lesson,” published in their book, “Women’s Voices of the 21st Century: Experiences That Shape Women.” She wrote the poem “Land of Mist and Moon” specifically for the call for

The poem begins by describing a snow-covered landscape where “song-like sounds of the wind/ shiver through trees,/shaking moonlight and moonlit patterns/ on blue white snow, …” A snowdrop cowering in shadow, seeing only a snowy landscape, is a symbol of hope and of death. It blooms close to the ground “where death lingers.” But “. . . layers of dead, dried leaves --/ autumn leftovers –“ protect the root systems of other plants “. . . that will come alive/with the spring thaw.” Kamm sees life “blooming” even in the darkest of times, recognizing that life is cyclical; she senses life’s potential in a future springtime. Cracker Trail riders to parade through St. Lucie County ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Whips will be cracking and horses will be prancing as the Florida Cracker Trail Riders, nearly 150 strong not including horses, mules and wagons, will parade on horseback through downtown Fort Pierce on Saturday, Feb. 21 at approximately 10:30 a.m. The parade celebrates the end of the 28th annual 120-mile Cross-State Trail Ride commemorating Florida’s settlers and their rugged cattle raising heritage. The parade begins on the corner of North Indian River Drive and Seaway Drive and travels south along Indian River Drive to the Traffic Circle, meanders through the Farmer’s Market and finally commences at Cobb’s Landing by the traffic roundabout on North Indian River Drive. Following the Civil War, a rugged brand of individuals settled along Florida’s east coast and central flatlands. They scratched

out a living raising cattle, pigs, vegetables and fishing. These early settlers became known as Florida Crackers; a reference to the cracking sound made by the braided, leather whips they used to drive their cattle rather than a food preference or a particular philosophy. The leather-tough pioneers, known as Cracker Cowmen, from up and down the east coast and throughout central Florida, gathered with their scrub cattle each year; congregating west of Fort Pierce to drive their giant herd across the state to Punta Rosa, near today’s Sanibel. The passage way between Fort Pierce and Punta Rosa was the only “dry” trans-Florida passageway. To the north of Fort Pierce, the Kissimmee River and its floodplains blocked the way, and to the south lay the big lake, and further south the Everglades made passage impossible. Fort Pierce’s historic P.P. Cobb

Store figured prominently in the cattle drive. Each day, as the thousands of cattle massed west of town, Cobb’s store ran 10 wagons, day and night, taking supplies out to the cattlemen and their herds as they prepared for the month-long journey. As they crossed the state they were faced with untold hardship; thieves, snakes, swarms of mosquitoes, swamps and disease were just some of the challenges faced by

and the P.P. Cobb Store, where they purchased supplies and provisions for the coming year before returning to their isolated homesteads and their eagerly waiting families. Many people mistakenly view the term “Cracker” as pejorative. The cowmen before them and those who participate in the annual commemorative Cracker Trail Ride relish the moniker cracker as a symbol of individualism, integrity and a heritage nearly forgotten in the rush to develop Florida’s pristine land. Many visitors and residents have no idea that Florida is one of the nation’s top cattle-producing states. In fact, Florida boasts the oldest breed of cattle in North America. The cows, known as Cracker Cows, descend from the cattle brought to the New World by Spanish explorers in the 1500s. Left behind by the Spaniards to turn wild, these scrawny cows were domesticated by the Seminoles in the 1800’s and, in turn, by the white settlers who later came to be known as Florida Crackers. Florida’s cattle-raising heritage and the Cracker Trail itself is immortalized in Patrick Smith’s must-read novel, “A Land Remembered. While you are downtown to see

the parade, stop by the newly installed inaugural marker of the soon-to-be-developed A.E. Backus Discovery Trail. Located in front of the historic P.P. Cobb Store, the panel recounts life along these waters circa 1906 as envisioned through the eyes of famed painter and native son, A.E. Backus, and through the historical images of dawn of the 20th-century photographer Harry Hill. This gorgeous historical panel is the first of 10 planned throughout the city. Following the Cracker Trail Parade, the public is invited to join the riders to learn more about Florida history and this historic event by meeting the trail riders and learning about local history and the Florida Cracker Trail Association. Opportunities for children to get their picture taken aboard a horse or mule will be available. Of course, carrots and apple slices are always appreciated. It’s all free, and it’s all so much fun for the whole family. The Florida Cracker Trail Association is a not-for-profit association dedicated to preserving the unique history of Florida through the re-enactment of this historic ride and other educational activities. Visit the Florida Cracker Trail website at www.crackertrail.org for more information about the ride.

ST. LUCIE WEST — Drama students at St. Lucie West Centennial High School will present two programs this spring that are intended for younger audiences. Feb. 4-6, they will present the Charles Bright play, “A Bottle of Joy,” to elementary school students from the district. An evening performance on Feb. 5 will be open to the public. March 11-12, students will present “No More Pain, Part 2,” as part of the school district’s anti-bullying program. The student-written performance will be presented to middle school students, with a public evening performance March 12. Samantha LaCroix is the district drama specialist. “’A Bottle of Joy’ is a lovely play about a magical kingdom far, far away, where everyone is joyful and happy,” she said. “They think it’s because of something the Wizard made, but they discover the joy is within themselves. There are villains who want to get rid of the joy on the kingdom. It’s for elementary school students, and we’re inviting all the elementary schools and the home-schooled, if they want to call and get tickets. She said that presenting the program has a lot of positive aspects, including exposing kids to live theater at an early age. “We love having the kids and

Folk legend comes to Emerson Center STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TREASURE COAST — When you interview singer/songwriter Livingston Taylor, you get a taste of the artist, the businessman and the college professor. There are, in equal parts, charm, humor and erudition. Taylor, who had hits with songs like “I Will Be in Love with You” and “I’ll Come Running,” has more than 40 years as a performer in genres that range from folk to pop to jazz. He comes to the Emerson Center Feb. 14 as part of the “Masters of Music” series that will also include John Sebastian on March 14 and Tom Paxton and Janis Ian on April 10. Taylor was one of the wave of singer/songwriters of the late 1960s and 1970s. With Carole King, his brother, James, Jim Croce and others, many consider it the Golden Age of the singer/ songwriter. I asked him why he thought so many greats came out of this era. His answer had nothing to do with cosmic forces and everything to do with technology. “It was the introduction of multi-track recording,” he said. “You could be patient with parts

of the creative process that didn’t work so well. Before 1960, everyone had to do his job very well. Once there was multi-track, you could assemble a track and work on it over a week or month. You didn’t have to hire a singer; you could be the singer. “Carole King could do the songs herself and make an income stream as an artist and writer and perhaps publisher. The economics of taking a single songwriter onto a multi-track recording studio were vastly less expensive and complicated than bringing in 70 players. It was simpler to record and there was much greater diversity of people who could be recorded.” Taylor is a professor at Berklee College of Music, and teaches stage performance. He stresses to his students that people have many ways to spend their money and entertainment is only one way. “I tell them that they are selling a product that is discretionary,” he said. “It’s not survival-based. You are going to need an audience. Why should an audience support your music? The reason is that they believe it has a fundamental value.” Taylor gave examples of why

Livingston Taylor audiences support an artist. “If you’re young and good-looking enough, the music is a medium,” he said. “Taylor Swift’s career is based on serviceable music. She gets a career.” Taylor cites as the antithesis musician Ben Folds. “His music is a sparkling tourde-force and that he doesn’t look like Tom Cruise is not a problem,” Taylor said. “If he looked like Tom Cruise, then you have Paul McCartney, (someone) with

exceptional music and very attractive.” Taylor said that he asks his students what they bring that will be compelling enough to get people to leave their own lives for a time and pay to enter the life of the musician, if only for the length of a concert. “People love to pay for a service, but you have to be of service,” he said. “How do you take your creativity and interface with a corporate structure?” After this serious note, the conversation turns Taylor’s own live shows. He said that his performances always surprise the audience with their story-telling and just plain fun. “Two things that surprise people about my shows are how comfortable I am and how funny the show is,” he said. “People laugh a lot and it’s a surprise.” The show will draw from a wide range of music. “Given my tenure in the business of over 40 years and given that I’m a voracious student of music, I have the ability to pull lots of stuff out of the Great American Songbook, as well as my own writing,” he said. “There’s

up, we all know how good music makes us feel about ourselves and our surroundings. All of us volunteers involved with the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society believe in the power of music and the importance of passing along a legacy of music to students. That’s why we work all year long to raise fund for scholarships to help ensure that there are always plenty of terrific opportunities for music here on the Treasure Coast. It’s also why we share our time and talent with students throughout St. Lucie, Martin and Indian River counties providing master classes in music and performance and why we invite student musicians to perform with us every Tuesday evening at the Sunrise Black Box Theatre in historic downtown Fort Pierce and every other Wednesday evening at the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens. We believe in the power of music, and we want to make sure we pass that magic along to the next generation through scholarship, opportunities and education. There are lots of investments with a much lower return, but we believe in the power of music and the incredible return it gives in the form of education, building teamwork and cooperation, creating and celebrating joy and creating a legacy of love that will be passed on generation to generation for as long as we are. Won’t you join us in supporting the power of music? To learn more about Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society, please visit www.jazzsociety.org, or call (772) 460-JAZZ. Don Bestor, a pianist/keyboardist with 27 years of “on the road” experience, 17 years of producing shows, and 12 years as a studio owner/engineer and president of the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society. ccording to one of the largest organizations for young people and social change, children who study music reap some serious benefits. At Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society, we know this and see it every day, but in case you wondered why music education is so important and why we work so hard to ensure that students continue to have opportunities to learn to play instruments, study and perform, here are a few reasons below. Did you know: • Children who study a musical instrument are more likely to excel in all of their studies, work better in teams, have enhanced critical thinking skills, stay in school, and pursue further education? • Also, secondary students who participated in a music group at school reported the lowest lifetime and current use of all substances (tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs)? • And, schools with music programs have an estimated 90.2 percent graduation rate and 93.9 percent attendance rate, compared with schools without music education, which average 72.9 percent graduation and 84.9 percent attendance? • Regardless of socioeconomic status or school district, students who participate in high-quality music programs score 22 percent better on English and 20 percent better on math standardized exams? • Children who study music tend to have larger vocabularies and more advanced reading skills than their peers who do not participate in music lessons? • Children with learning disabilities or dyslexia who tend to lose focus with more noise benefit greatly from music lessons? • Much like expert technical skills, mastery in arts and humanities is closely correlated to high earnings? • Young children who take music lessons show different brain development and improved memory over the course of a year, compared to children who do not receive musical training? • A 2004 Stanford University study showed that mastering a musical instrument improves the way the human brain processes parts of spoken language? (Source: DoSomething.org) Even if we didn’t have all this statistical information to back it
