ST. LUCIE COUNTY — A local nonprofit organization had its best holiday gift drive ever this year. Guardians for New Futures, a St. Lucie West-based organization serving the Treasure Coast, provided more than 3,000 gifts to about 450 abused and neglected children during the holiday season. “This was our best gift drive yet. Words cannot describe what this means to the children and those of us dedicated to their well-being,” Guardians for New Futures President Debbie Butler said. This year’s total was well over
the group’s typical yield. Over the past six years, the organization has secured 5,000 gifts. It’s important to raise that rate when kids in need are at stake, Butler said. “I think several things helped increase participation in the gift drive this year. One: awareness regarding the unbelievable number of maltreated children in care in our community. Thankfully, our annual child summit continues to gain recognition and participation which has also helped us with community outreach and awareness with regard to the numbers and needs of the children,” she said. “Two: specific requests of the children. Our community is

Your brain is the key to understanding speech and sounds. If you don’t use it, You lose it! Imagine sitting in a chair for a solid year and then getting up and trying to walk - you couldn’t! DON’T LET YOUR BRAIN LOSE THE ABILITY TO ALLOW YOU TO UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU HEAR. PLEASE READ BILL GUSTAFSON’S STORY The only thing that isn’t happy about Bill Gustafson’s newfound ability to hear is the large game he passionately hunts. Because of a profound hearing loss, Gustafson was ready to give up his beloved sport because you can’t be a good hunter when you can’t hear. He says he actually worked with several other hearing aid providers before finding Mutter’s Hearing Service, and like finding the prize game he’d been tracking, it was well worth the grueling hunt. “Sometimes I hear stuff I don’t want to hear!” Gustafson laughs, “but I’m so glad. People need to know about Joe Mutter. He is dedicated and thorough. He really knows his product. He explained everything in detail so that I had a complete understanding of my condition, what I needed, and what I could expect from my hearing aids.” Gustafson loves having the the ability to adjust his current hearing aids, as needed, to adapt to different surroundings. He also loved Bill Gustafson & Joe Mutter that, “Joe makes dealing with hearing loss a family affair. Part of his standard of care includes making spouses or other family members a part of the process from beginning to end.” For the Gustafsons, that was almost as impressive as Mutter’s follow-up care, which they say is outstanding. “We go back for STARKEY, the only American Owned and everything from cleanings to advice.” Mutter’s Precision Hearing was clearly on target for Gustafson and Operated Hearing Aid he adamantly wants people to know. “I think it’s important to say to people, if you need hearing aids, get Manufacturer them now; waiting only makes it worse. I wouldn’t recommend anyone but Joe Mutter for your hearing needs. He’s given me another shot at life.”

a very loving and caring community — people want to help and knowing how to help enables them to move forward. The individual wish lists of the children help individuals see what the child needs and wants and helps to personalize the experience for the giver while truly benefiting the children. “Three: ease of communicating with others to share in this wonderful opportunity. For the last two years, we have managed the gift drive virtually through email — no postage or printing costs — thus all donations and gifts go directly to the children instead of a third party. Plus through the beauty of email, it is very easy to pass the information onto friends and colleagues, thus growing awareness and support for the children,” Butler said. Many of the kids needed basic necessities like clothes and many ask for food. TREASURE COAST — Area county clerks granted marriage licenses to gay couples for the first time Tuesday, and the St. Lucie County Clerk’s office had the most along the Treasure Coast to start the day. By press time, Tuesday morning, 10 couples — four male and six female — had completed their paperwork to be recognized by the state as a couple in St. Lucie County. Martin and Indian River counties had one couple each. James Hoffmaster said it’s gratifying for him and his soonto-be-husband Eugene Kovacs to make their 23-year relationship official with the state. “It really has been an emotional rollercoaster,” Hoffmaster said

Central football players hoping to take talents to college level Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER
bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Fewer Fort Pierce Central football players are being recruited this year, but optimism is high anyways. According to Rivals.com, a website largely known for its high school and college athlete rankings, Central has just one twostar or higher rated senior player (on a five-star scale), and that’s wide receiver Nehari Crawford. “It really hasn’t been too big of a year for us,” Central Head Coach Josh Shaffer said. College coaches and scouts are paying most attention to Crawford, cornerback Cortney Mimms and center Andrew Guthart, Shaffer said. Guthart’s toughness has set him apart from many interior linemen in the area, and he has a scholarship offer from Wingate University, a Division II school in North Carolina. Crawford also has some division
offers, including ones from Colgate University, Central Connecticut State University, Alcorn State, Bryant University and Bucknell University. The speedy receiver has been tough for defenses to cover this year, but colleges haven’t taken notice as much as they should be, Shaffer said. “I hope and expect more for him. I think the kid is definitely being overlooked. That’s not just something I’m saying; everyone is saying that,” he said. “He’s nearly 6 feet and then you combine that with his speed. He’s got speed outside, and he’s got size inside.” Colgate pounced early and got Mimms locked up. Shaffer said Mimms is going to be a tough player at the line of scrimmage, making wide receiver, work hard for their catches. That’s about where this year’s recruiting class ends. Shaffer is holding onto some hope, though, and said this is about the time when a lot of late scholarship

The district paid $4.41 million for the land, but the total bond amount was for $4.6 million to cover administrative costs and closing fees, St. Lucie West Services District manager Dennis Pickle said. “Those are just common bond issuance costs,” he said. The land is part of the 4E Ba-
sin, which transfers water west, past the Florida Turnpike. That basin is one of the largest in the district’s system, yet one of the most problematic, the district’s engineer Robert Lawson said. “During high intensity storm events, Basin 4E has experienced flooding and, due to its size, has characteristically been one of the last basins to return to normal levels. The flooding, and subsequent time of recovery, has impacted many businesses and residences, as well as the existing Martin Memorial Medical facilities,” he said. The pond is about a year and a
half away from being done, but, when it’s built, it would provide for an additional 4.5 inches of rain to fall before it floods the streets. The water draining past the Turnpike eventually flows into the city drainage system and into the St. Lucie River. The new pond will be filled with natural buffers and nutrient-filtering wetland plants to remove nitrogen and phosphorous – two of the most harmful nutrients for saltwater life – from the water. The land will likely have some recreational use, too. The current plans show hiking trails,
but Pickle said there may be more added as funding becomes available. City and St. Lucie County parks and recreation department staff members are deciding whether they will sponsor and provide something for the land, Pickle said. “It’s contingent on how much funding there is and what it’s funded for,” he said. Yearly costs won’t be much to maintain the land, Pickle said. “It’s just the manpower hours that would have to go into it. We already have all the staff and equipment,” he said.
Port St Lucie, FL- The most common method your doctor will recommend to treat your neuropathy is with prescription drugs that may temporarily reduce your symptoms. These drugs have generic names such as Gabapentin, Lyrica, or Cymbalta and are primarily antidepressant or anti-seizure drugs. These drugs may cause you to feel uncomfortable and have a variety of harmful side effects.

As you can see in Figure 2 , as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not get the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die” they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning and many additional symptoms. l blood these very smal Figure2: When seased they begin di e vessels becom the nerves begin to d to shrivel up an . te ra ne ge de
The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. As long as you have not sustained at least 85% nerve damage then your condition can been treated
In order to effectively treat your neuropathy three factors must be determined. 1. What is the underlying cause? 2. How Much Nerve Damage Has Been Sustained. NOTE: Once you have sustained 85% nerve loss, there is nothing that we can do for you.
3. How much treatment will your condition require?
The treatment that is provided at our clinic has three main goals: 1. Increase blood flow
The main problem is that your doctor has told you to just live with the problem or try the drugs which you don’t like taking because they make you feel uncomfortable. There is now a facility right here on the Treasure Coast that offers you hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side effects. (see the special neruopathy severity examination at the end of this article)
2. Stimulates small fiber nerves
Dr. John Silva will be offering this neuropathy severity examination from now until Friday, January 16, 2015 Call to make an appointment Dr. Silva to determine if with D your peripheral neuropathy can be treated.

Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow.
Dr. John Silva at our Functional Medicine Practice will do a neuropathy severity examination to determine the extent of the nerve damage for only $70. This neuropathy severity examination will consist of a detailed sensory evaluation, extensive peripheral vascular testing and a detailed analysis of the findings of your neuropathy.

3. Decrease brain-based pain Part o or treatment protocol lizes a specialized low level light (L.E.D.) therapy to increase blood flow as well as treatments to heal the nerve damage.

TREASURE COAST — While many people are absorbed in the frenzy of holiday shopping and commercialism, it is often easy to lose sight of what the season is all about: giving, hope, support and love. The daily efforts of the nonprofit organization Mary’s Shelter of the Treasure Coast exemplify these core values and a recent success story is a reason to rejoice this holiday season. Pregnant, unemployed and alone, she found herself sleeping on couches, essentially homeless and without any true support. She called Mary’s Shelter and became an official resident in May. During her pregnancy, Hunter completed Mary’s Shelter’s in-house training programs, which included job readiness, Bible study, financial counseling, group therapy, mental health counseling, parenting classes, breast feeding classes and other life skills training. Mary’s Shelter’s assistance did not end there. Hunter was supported financially and emotionally by Mary’s Shelter. The organization helped pay for her classes at Paramount Training, where she received certification in phlebotomy, EKG and as a patient care technician. Hunter gave birth to her daughter, Amirah, on Oct. 7 and still resides at Mary’s Shelter. She was recently offered a job at a health care facility and is preparing to begin work as a full-time nursing assistant. Hunter was able to get Amirah
into a daycare program at Reed Daycare Center in Stuart with assistance from the Early Learning Coalition and CareerSource Florida. “Our hearts are warmed by Bridgette, her beautiful daughter and her amazing story. We are happy and humbled that we were able to lift her up and contribute to her success,” said Gina Thompson, Mary’s Shelter executive director. “We hope that she will continue to live here until she is ready to rent her first apartment as a gainfully employed, strong and independent woman.” Mary’s Shelter of the Treasure Coast is a transitional home centrally located in Stuart, Florida that provides residential and non-residential services for expectant and new mothers who are in need of a supportive environment because of a lack of suitable housing or favorable family relationships. While caring for women in need, Mary’s Shelter prepares mothers with newborns for independent living and a vision of hope for the future through empowerment, education and training. offers start pouring in. Next year should be better for Central recruits, however. Rivals already has 2016 recruits listed, and Central is faring well. Left tackle Stewart Reese is rated as a four-star player and linebacker Greg Simmons is a threestar guy. Reese is pegged as the 18th best tackle in the nation, and Rivals has Simmons as the 17th best linebacker. Simmons was paramount in Central’s run defense – something Florida Atlantic University and Cincinnati have taken notice of. Shaffer said Simmons will likely get a lot more offers. “I think that’s really going to start picking up. Tennessee has been keeping him warm and calling him until the time comes,” he said. Simmons said he’s talked a lot with coaches from Arkansas, Purdue and a few SEC teams. “Both of my two offers are great schools. Cinciniatti is on the rise, and FAU is definitely on the rise,” he said. He has a lot he wants to accomplish next year, and he’s going to have to improve his game, Simmons said. “I’m really working on just covering … to get my footwork right to perfect my craft,” Simmons said.

“I’m sort of the run stop guy, so my weakness is kind of my pass coverage.” Maybe that will be enough to get him to one of his favorite schools. “As a child I really wanted to play for Miami, Oklahoma, California. I always watched my dad, how he watched TV and saw what he liked … it was mostly Miami because my dad liked them.” Stewart Reese will be able to pick just about any school in the nation. He already has scholarship offers from top programs, including Florida, Florida State, Miami, Michigan State and Georgia. If he heads to Georgia, the 6-foot-6, 330-pounder would be joining former Central quarterback Sam Vaughn. “He took an unofficial visit to Georgia, he loves FSU. He wants to visit Auburn because they have this buffet for $2 that the recruits get to go to. I guess it’s pretty legendary,” Shaffer said. With national signing day arriving February 1, a lot should be happening within the next few weeks. “There are a lot of guys who have gotten recruited late around here,” Shaffer said, naming Fort Pierce Westwood graduate and rising NFL star Kalil Mack as one. “I’m hoping a lot of coaches see that they can do well with guys from the Treasure Coast.”

MODEL from page A14 was young and naïve. The first thing a model thinks of is to sign with agencies. They all rejected me. I was so new, I had no idea what I was doing, and I didn’t appear appropriately, I didn’t have the correct photos and I couldn’t walk in heels. They sent me home because I needed to work on things.” Citrone began practicing her walk outside, walking back in forth in heels. Her mother, Jo Moreira Da Silva, was there to lend moral support. Then came the school fashion show. “I auditioned and something came over me,” she said. “I walked like I knew what I was doing. I ended up being the show closer. Being the ‘opener’ and ‘closer’ are what people wait for. It boosted my confidence.” This year, Citrone decided she was ready to look for work. She had her photos, but she still needed experience. “I started looking for photographers to work for and to look for fashion shows,” she said. “People were open to me and allowed me to be part of their shows. It was kind of cool. I either opened or closed. I thought I must have something they wanted, and I got experience working with different people.” Citrone did a show in Miami last fall for Schwartzkopf Hair Essentials and has teamed up with them to do their show in Canada this fall. “I did a show with their company this past November,” she said. “I got to work with Kim Vo, Guy Tang and Damien Carney, who are like gods in the ‘hair world.’ It was so incredible that they want me to come back next year.” Now she’s headed to New York for Fashion Week. “Back in November, I noticed a casting call from Fashion Week,” she said. “I applied and got confirmation that a designer wanted to meet with me. I had five days to make arrangements to go to New York. I fell in love with the city. I did my casting call and af-
ter a few days, I got confirmation that I would be in Andres Aquino’s show. He’s a couture fashion designer who does elegant dresses, skirts and high-end evening wear.” Citrone is going without an agent and hopes to attract one while she is there. “I hope I’ll be picked up by an agency,” she said. “Supermodels work with IMG. They’re running the fashion game right now. My goal is to walk for Victoria’s Secret.” While most models try to get an agent first, Citrone is trying something different. “I wanted to take a different approach to attracting an agency,” she said. “I want the opportunity to show them what I’m capable of so they can see it. Photos can only give so much. It’s not just about the picture. I want people to see the real side of me.” The real side of her also includes a passion for dancing. She credits her dance coach in high school, Mona Ray Buchanan, with pushing her to become part of the dance team. In 2013, she participated in a local “Dancing with the Stars” to benefit the Fort Pierce Police Athletic League. “When I’m not modeling I get back to the dance studio,” she said. Modeling is my career, and dancing is my true passion. It helps me perform on the runway. I love being in front of people and entertaining. The two of them created what I am.” Citrone, who is the fifth child out of seven, said that she is the one who’s always loved the spotlight. Now it will be on her in the biggest fashion stage in the world. “Most of the things I’ve done have been in Miami or Atlanta,” she said. “This is my first big jump. I’m so happy I did this. This is the moment I’ve been waiting for. If I go up and give 100 percent, it will give me that push and take off and (I can) do what I want to do. I’d always been told I’d be nervous in New York. After I got there, I never felt more comfortable.”

MARRIAGE from page A4 before turning in the final documents. The two had their own marriage ceremony in 1994 but didn’t think they would get the chance to make it official, Kovacs said. “I never thought it would be legal in my lifetime. It’s been a long time coming,” Kovacs said. Federal Judge Robert Hinkle paved the way for Florida county clerks on New Year’s Day when he upheld his August ruling that Florida law provisions banning same-sex marriage were unconstitutional. The August preliminary injunction required the Washington County clerk to issue a marriage license to a same-sex couple, but Hinkle said it wouldn’t stop there. “The preliminary injunction now in effect thus does not require the Clerk to issue licenses to other applicants,” Hinkle ordered Jan. 1. “The Constitution requires the Clerk to issue such licenses.” Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi issued a statement saying she would not try to block Hinkle’s decision. “This office has sought to minimize confusion and uncertainty, and we are glad the Court has provided additional guidance.

My office will not stand in the way as clerks of court determine how to proceed,” she said. Jessica Anderson and Crystal Jeffrey said they were worried they wouldn’t be able to get a marriage license locally because St. Lucie County Clerk Joseph Smith held off on granting marriage licenses to same-sex couples until Hinkle’s clarification. “She called them four times last week and called them again Monday, and they said, ‘Yeah, we are going to do it,’ and now it’s like, it’s here. It’s really going to happen,” Jeffrey said. “It’s like a dream. It’s really here.” But, Smith said he’s happy to issue the licenses after hearing the ruling. “The issue had been that we wanted clarification. We weren’t sure if Judge Hinkle’s ruling was referring just to Washington County or if it was for all of them,” Smith said. “The nice thing being about a clerk is that you just have to follow the law,” he said. Sooner Means said she feels like a real person now, after filling out the paperwork when she was at the St. Lucie County Clerk’s Office Tuesday morning with her future wife, Patricia Goodman.

FAQs of same sex marriage requirements FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
Q: What form should the Clerk use for a same sex couple applying for a marriage license? A: Currently, the form DH 743 is the only legal form that can be used. Q: What if the applicants object to applying as “bride” and “groom”? A: The Clerk cannot control what the applicants strike through and write on the paper form. However, as long as it is the DH 743 form, it is our understanding that the Bureau of Vital Statistics (BVS) will not reject the form. Q: Can the Clerk modify the electronic DH 743 form used locally to meet an applicant’s wishes for terminology? A: The Clerk is advised not to revise the electronic version of the form. Altering the form in such a manner may result in BVS rejecting the form. Q: What if the Groom objects to

the Bride’s surname and wants his or her own noted? A: BVS suggests writing in the groom’s surname in the space on that line, to the right of the groom’s name. Q: Will BVS be modifying the DH 743 marriage application forms? If so, how long will it take to get the new forms? A: In conversations with the BVS, the association is told that the Department of Health will go through a rulemaking process in order to revise the form. We are not aware yet how long that may take, but rulemaking is not quick and it could take months. The association is awaiting more specific information on this from the department.
it will be recognized in the other states, so long as it was not a legally prohibited marriage. That said, the applicants, if married for a second time in Florida, will be legally married at two different places and times. In addition, we checked with BVS today regarding this issue. They will accept the marriage record form in these types of situations for same sex couples getting re-married to each other.
Q: What should the Clerk do if a same sex couple admits they were married in another state and now want to be married in Florida? A: If married in another state, applying for a Florida marriage license is not legally required. If a couple is married in one state,
Q: What should a Clerk do if after issuing the license, the applicants have the ceremony without the three-day wait and have not gotten a waiver from a county judge? In my reading of the law, Clerks do not have the authority to waive the three-day requirement unless there has been a delegation or order from the courts to waive it. Arbor Day ceremony to be held at the Botanical Gardens in January PORT ST. LUCIE — The Friends of the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens will commemorate Florida Arbor Day on Friday, Jan. 16 at 11 a.m., and the public is encouraged to attend. Arbor Day holds a long tradition and special place in the hearts of many individuals. Although the rest of the coun-
try celebrates Arbor Day on the fourth Friday in April, the third Friday in January is the official date of Florida Arbor Day, due to the state›s subtropical climate. The ceremony will begin with a prayer blessing the tree, followed by a recitation of our Arbor Day poem, and the reading of names of loved ones being memorialized. A tree will then be planted in the gardens, identi-
fied with a plaque, commemorating its year of planting. The community is invited to remember those who have died, honor a living legend or celebrate a life event with participation in the remembrance tree program. The minimum donation of $25 will include a reading during the ceremony and permanent recording in a Book of Remembrance, located for viewing in the Gardens’ Pavilion.

PORT ST. LUCIE — In an iTunes and downloads world, it is sometimes hard to remember that there is nothing like hearing music live. There is something special about being in a concert hall and watching the performer, in real time, make magic happen. The St. Bernadette Concert Series has been bringing performers to our area for several years. In an area where there are not many venues for classical music, the series, led by its director, Tom Bold, has brought local artists, and those from afar, to our attention. This year, Bold and his umbrella organization, BoldTunes, has decided to make the series free. It is part of the passion he has for bringing live music to as many people as he can. In a written statement, he described why he feels this way is so important. “It’s not about the quality of the music, mistakes or no mistakes, or even the energy and passion of the artist before our eyes and ears. It is simply about our souls,

BOLD from page B1 has brought some old friends and newcomers to the series. The season begins Jan. 18, when Eric Genius, a composer and pianist, will present classical and contemporary music at 3 p.m. On Jan. 31, a series favorite, pianist Francesco Attesti, will again come to Port St. Lucie from his home in Italy. The Jan. 13 concert is at 7:30 p.m. Concert-goers will have the opportunity on Feb. 13 to meet Shane Thomas, the new conductor of OPUS, Martin County’s High School’s well-regarded choral ensemble. On Feb. 16, pianist Mark Jones and organist Matt Phelps will present an all-Liszt program that will include the composer’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Treasure Coast favorite Terry Barber will present “The Best of Broadway” Feb. 27 with a salute to the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Helen Chang, a violinist with the Michigan Symphony Orchestra, will perform with local pianist Joanne Nelson on March 8. They will present works by Bach, Brahms and Tchaikovsky. On March 19, the French organ and piano duo Francois Oliver and Vincent Rigot will perform music of their native
land. Dale Reith, director of choral music at Indian River State College, will present a tribute to George Gershwin March 23 at 7 p.m. Concert-goers will have the opportunity to meet Shane Thomas, the new conductor of OPUS, Martin County’s High School’s well-regarded choral ensemble, for the season’s final concert March 30. Bold hopes that his decision to make the concerts free will bring the music to a wider audience. “Beginning this year, concerts through BoldTunes at St. Bernadette are free to everyone because everyone deserves the opportunity to find what eludes us in our daily language, work and play. I ask my artists for the courage to come and perform, and I ask the Treasure Coast for the courage to come and share and leave with more than you thought possible.” The St. Bernadette Concert series at St. Bernadette Church, 350 N.W. California Blvd, St. Lucie West beings Jan. 18 with a performance by pianist Eric Genius. Tickets for the 7 p.m. concert are $35. For tickets, call (772) 2247089 or visit the website www. boldtunes.com.

100 miles of bicycling, two days of handball to raise money for area vets Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER
pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com
The Lance Cpl. Justin J. Wilson (U.S. Marines) Memorial Foundation, Justin’s Wings, and Treasure Coast Cycling Association are gearing up to go 105 miles on March 22 to benefit military families and veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder. The fourth annual Riding for Heroes will be on the fifth anniversary of Wilson’s death while serving in Operation Enduring Freedom in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. His mother, Frances “Fran” Wilson, is comforted that the family will have lots of company on the anniversary of her son’s death. “It’s, I guess with grieving, just to know that on the anniversary
of his death I won’t be alone, but there’ll be a lot of people there riding for him, that just makes it a little easier,” she said. Additionally, Wilson’s parents in-law are planning a handball tournament at the starting and finishing place for the bicycle ride: Lance Cpl. Justin Wilson Park, 2050 S.W. Mapp Road, Palm City. The Martin County Commission named the park in Wilson’s honor in 2011. Wilson was an avid handball player, and played at that park before joining the Marine Corps. “I unfortunately only got to play a few times with him,” Wilson’s father-in-law, Cadell McVeigh, said. “I was waiting for him to get back (from Afghanistan) to play some more. He loved handball.”

Kevin Costner & Modern West return to the Sunrise Theatre on Feb. 27 FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Back by popular demand, Kevin Costner & Modern West returns to the Sunrise Theatre stage on Friday, Feb. 27 at 8 p.m. Tickets go on sale to members Monday, Jan. 5 at 10 a.m. before they go on sale to the general public on Jan. 12. Costner grew up with a deep love for and interest in music. Learning piano and then guitar, young Costner sang in church choirs and in school productions. Motown and The Four Seasons caught his ear growing up, along with the later sounds of Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, and Sting — artists that no doubt inspired Costner’s love of strong, lyrically-driven melodies and harmonies. A fortuitous meeting with John Coinman, at the onset of Costner’s acting career, bonded the two men in their love of music and they began writing and performing together along with another friend, Blair Forward. Ever loyal to his friends, Costner

McVeigh said in previous years the annual handball tournament attracted players from as far away as Chicago. The annual bicycle ride and handball tourney, are the foundation’s only fundraisers. Last year, the two events raised about $12,000. Justin’s Wings’ primary mission is to help families that need financial assistance get to loved ones’ important military events, such as deployments and returns. However, Fran said that she’s looking at adding a mission this year. “Justin, if he’d survived, would have been severely injured,” Fran said. “I’ve been looking at the service dogs and how they help with (post-traumatic stress disorder).” Fran said Justin’s father, Lance, and she have been talking to Heidi Spirazza, founder and executive director of Paws 4 Liberty, Fort Worth, about funding the training of a PTSD service dog that would be given to a qualified veteran. “It’s a lot of money to train service dogs,” Fran said. “My only stipulation is the dog be named after Justin.” The foundation named after Justin Wilson has an expense to cover first — renting the park named after him, the Lance Cpl. Justin Wilson Park. “I have to pay $300 for the park, for Justin’s park,” Fran said. Abatte, who is a triathlete considering participating in this year’s Riding for Heroes, said he’ll call the Wilsons and see what options there are to help them use that park without payment. In addition to Lance Cpl. Justin Wilson Park, the ride organizers also use Timer Powers Park, 21479 S.W. Citrus Blvd., Indiantown. John Goings, president of the Treasure Coast Cycling Association, said this is that group’s
COSTNER from page B10 continued to involve Coinman in a musical capacity on various movie projects. The three got together and found they still enjoyed making their brand of music, and Costner made the decision to form a new band. Coinman recruited lead guitarist and producer Teddy Morgan, drummer Larry Cobb, and Park Chisolm, and Kevin Costner & Modern West was born. Kevin Costner & Modern West shows are up-close and personal experiences. “I prefer our performances to be in intimate settings, where the audience can literally be “within reach” of the band,” said Costner. Tickets are priced at $49/$39.
largest event of the year. There are four bicycling routes for riders to pick from. Those taking the 105- and 80-mile routes will leave at 7:30 a.m. Those taking the 60-mile route will take off at 8:15 a.m. The shortest route, 40 miles, will start at 9 a.m. “For the last four years, we’ve focused on Riding for Heroes,” Goings said. He said that the cycling association used to have a large event that started in Jensen Beach, the “Ocean to the Lake” ride which went to Lake Okeechobee and back, to benefit the Red Cross. However, he said starting and finishing long rides east of the St. Lucie River was getting less attractive to organizers and riders, due to increasing traffic. He said the Wilsons contacted the association for help organizing a large ride about the time it was looking around for options to start centuries west of the St. Lucie. “It takes a lot of effort to put on one of these things, and Fran had a great story about her son and what she was trying to do,” Goings said. He added, “This was starting in Palm City. Three stop lights and we’re out of town and heading west.” Registration and packet pickup will be on Saturday, March 21, at Vine & Barley Palm City, 2951 High Meadow Ave., Palm City. Advance registration with garenteed T-shirts is $35. The Clarion Inn, 1200 South Federal Highway, Stuart, is the host hotel. Check in will open on Sunday, March 22, at 6:30 a.m. For additional information, visit www.justinswings.org/event/ riding-for-heroes-march-22-2015, and monitor the Treasure Coast Cycling Association’s Facebook page. More about the handball tournament will soon be posted at the U.S. Handball Association’s website, www.ushandball.org.
