Stormwater help on the way Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER

ST. LUCIE WEST — A parcel of land that had been in demand by commercial developers will now be used as a stormwater retention pond to reduce residential flooding. About 12 acres of a 16-acre lot at the northwest corner of Cashmere and St. Lucie West boulevards, owned by Martin Memorial Health System, as the site, which was the target for a new Walmart grocery store. The Port St. Lucie City Council turned down the proposal unanimously in March, voting in line with the Planning and Zoning Board’s recommendation. The city revised an interlocal agreement with the St. Lucie West Services District at the Sept. 22 City Council meeting. Under the old agreement, the city retained 25 percent of the stormwater fees collected by the Community Development District, and the district keeps the remaining 75 percent. The city’s share is typically $500,000 per year. The new agreement allows the city to fund an additional $400,000 per year to the district for purchasing property to help with stormwater runoff. St. Lucie West resident Mark Gotz wasn’t happy with the decision. “I don’t understand why you’re taking commercial property off

of our tax rolls,” he said. “We should be developing our commercial property. We should have put Walmart on that site to put 600 additional jobs … I don’t understand the thought process of this commission.” Mayor JoAnn Faiella said the decision was made because the location wasn’t a good fit. “We have to look at each situation individually as it’s presented. The Walmart situation didn’t pan out, and, at least for me, it wasn’t the right situation for it.” Taking a commercial property and using it for stormwater runoff is nothing new, city manager Jeff Bremer said. “We’ve done this many times,” he said. Cutler sais the project will not cost residents any additional money. The issue is flooding, and Councilwoman Linda Bartz said multiple businesses left St. Lucie West because of it. “We just don’t have enough for drainage. It’s a Florida issue, not just ours,” she said. The system that’s in place is designed for runoff, in more extreme conditions, to accumu-

It’s a 20-year old system that was approved by the South Florida Water Management District, according to Dennis Pickle, St. Lucie West Services District manager. “It’s not a design I would have approved by any means,” Pickle said. The retention pond won’t be constructed for another 18 months, at minimum but, when it’s built, would provide for an additional 1.5 inches of rain to fall before it floods the streets. “You’re going to have flooding here no matter what you do. We’re just trying to make the best of that design,” he said.

It’s a great workforce and one of the friendliest workforces I’ve seen.” Millions of dollars will be invested into the new sites to make life better for employees, Phillips said. “There will be more choices, cleaner facilities, newer facilities, better equipment on the call floor as far as computers, technologies and phones go — better seats, chairs. The infrastructure will be completely redone,” Phillips said. Some of those choices include health insurance options and advancement options. All of the former Aegis employees will be retained by Teleperformance, Phillips said. They will also be given priority if they want to relocate to a different location across the country. All employees start out as customer service representatives, making $9 an hour and potentially $15 an hour with bonuses, but there are plenty of advancement opportunities, Phillips said. “I started 18 years ago as an agent and worked my way all the way up to where I am today,” Phillips said. After 90 days with the company, employees can advance, Phillips said.

Most call center companies often hire in big numbers because the jobs are client-based. So, if a company is using a particular call center for six months for things like customer support and billing, usually, the jobs are tied to that client. Once the client goes, the employee is usually let go by the call center. Although he couldn’t share the names, Phillips said Teleperformance doesn’t lay off its workers when a client leaves. “We do everything we can to save that person’s employment,” he said.

Wedding on a whim: Couple advances wedding for groom’s cancer-stricken father Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER

bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The bride and groom entered the 8-by-12foot room where they were to get married. They walked to a spot in front of a sliding glass door, where the sun shone through the dimly lit room, and passed the groom’s father, who was already there waiting for them. The couple turned around and smiled at him, and he returned one back from his bed. In a gloomy time, this was a bright spot for them. Couples often spend upwards of a year planning their weddings. The to-do list can be extensive: prepare the guest list, choose outfits, hire caterers, pick a venue, plan a honeymoon and prepare to live together happily ever after. It’s overwhelming for many. This wasn’t a conventional wedding, though. The couple planned their special day 24 hours in advance and had the ceremony at a local hospice care room Oct. 1 so the groom’s father, Joseph Porcelli, could see his son, Michael Porcelli, marry his fiancé Molly Stevens. The two had been together for 10 years, so Joseph had been waiting for this special day for some time. Joseph normally resides at The Club at St. Lucie West, a gated community off of St. Lucie West Boulevard, but he’s had

Pierce because he developed bone cancer, which has spread rapidly throughout his body. The prognosis isn’t good for Joseph, a former architect who did surveying across the world in U.S. embassies, but he stays in good spirits. He’s been fighting illness for a while now, having battled ALS, also known as Lou Gherig’s Disease, for 14 years. “I think he’s at peace with everything,” Michael said. Michael and Stevens had planned an Oct. 15, 2015 wedding in their hometown of Albany, N.Y., but didn’t want to wait that long. They flew to Port St. Lucie days before the wedding and came up with a plan. “We had talked about it before, but once he got bone cancer, it seemed like the right thing to do,” Michael said. “It’s very important to have my father at my wedding. There’s a chance that it wouldn’t be possible for him to make it. “I’m sure it’s crossed his mind at some point,” he said. Because of the ALS, Joseph writes on a small dry-erase board and texts to communicate. When his ex-wife Kathy, who he remains friends with, told him

the news, he texted her “Wow! So Friggin proud! Hugs!” About a dozen close friends and family members filed in after the couple and positioned themselves throughout the room. Joseph looked around the room and smiled at everyone as the ceremony started. The bride and groom smiled, too, as the sun’s rays highlighted their faces. For the next 10 minutes, everything seemed normal. The officiant read a statement, eyes welled before giving way to full-on flood-gates, and the rings were gathered. Joseph was the best man and kept the ring on his pinky finger until the time came. The bride and groom made their vows, said their “I-do’s” and were pronounced husband and wife. “I’m really happy we did this,” Stevens said. “It’s really special, and we’re always going to remember this.” Joseph’s girlfriend of 12 years, Eileen Duggan said she was extremely happy that he got to see his son’s wedding. “I just love that they did this and pulled it off very quickly,” she

ST. LUCIE WEST — The St. Lucie West Centennial football team established its rushing attack early and rode that momentum to a 37-0 victory over Treasure Coast to give the team an early lead in the 8-8A district standings. Centennial (2-3) started their first drive at the Treasure Coast 20-yard line after an hour lighting delay. They put together a 10-play drive, lasting four minutes and 25 seconds that resulted in a touchdown off of a 24-yard run by junior Basil Bradshaw. Nine

of those plays were runs. Bradshaw led all rushers with 133 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns. Things went downhill quickly for Treasure Coast. They started their first drive at their own 4-yard line. On the second play of the drive, quarterback Anthony Bailey fumbled the snap, and Centennial’s Marco Liotta recovered the ball in the end zone. The extra point was blocked, making the score 13-0. Man charged in death of his 2-year-old son STAFF WRITER

bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com

ST. LUCIE WEST — A St. Lucie West man is being investigated in the death of his 2-year old foster son, Trysten Eli Frank Adams. Michael Beer, 47, was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse Oct. 1 after a St. Lucie County medical examiner ruled the death a homicide, due to Adams having lacerations to his liver and internal bleeding and bruising from blunt force trauma, Port St. Lucie spokesperson Master Sgt. Frank Sabol said. Port St. Lucie Police and St. Lucie County Fire and Rescue were called to the 700 block of Southwest Myakka River Trace Sept. 28 to help with an unresponsive child. Adams and his 10-month-old biological brother were home with Beer, a St. Lucie County substitute teacher, that day, while Beer’s wife, Michelle Beer, was running errands with the

couple’s biological daughter. The two returned just before the ambulance arrived, according to the arrest affidavit. Both Michael and Michelle Beer said everything had been normal that day; Adams did not show any signs of discomfort throughout, only having woken up from a nap crying. While Michelle was out, Michael went to change Adams’ diaper and found him lying on the floor. Michael said he noticed that Adams’ lips were pale, and he called 911. First responders took Adams to Tradition Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The medical examiner said the wounds caused internal bleeding, which would have resulted in him dying with 15 minutes to an hour. “At no time could Michael provide me with a logical explanation as to why or how these injuries were sustained,” the arrest affidavit says. The Beer’s took custody of three children in July, police said. Michelle Beer has not been charged, but the other two foster

The Department of Children and Families made a report in 1993 that Michael Beer had allegedly abused a 2-year-old non-foster child which he had been in care of in Palm Beach County. Beer was denied bail, and awaits a hearing while residing at St. Lucie County jail.

He finished 4-7 with 34 yards passing and 50 yards rushing on 20 carries with two touchdowns. The second half moved quickly, as the game was put on a running clock. Many Centennial starters were subbed out to start the fourth quarter. “It’s a good way to open the district,” Centennial head coach Ron Parker said. “Credit to the offensive line up front. We started the game like we should have. Maybe we need a rain delay every week — just come out, stretch and play.” “We’ve got to clean up the second half. TREAUSRE COAST — In unguarded moments, opponents of the proposed Florida Prospective Judicial Vacancies Amendment say that it’s about Republicans thwarting Democrats from possibly appointing too many Supreme Court justices. In unguarded moments, supporters of the proposed amendment say it’s about Republicans thwarting Democrats from possibly appointing too many Supreme Court justices. Bill Paterson, chairman of the Republican Party of St Lucie County, said the prospect of Charlie Crist, or another Democrat, appointing too many justices is unpalatable. “Those positions could be filled with justices who are not in concert with the mainstream of Florida,” Paterson, said. Betty Paterson, (no relation to Bill Paterson), is a spokeswoman for the League of Women Voters of Martin County. She said Amendment 3 is a naked partisan power grab for control of the Supreme Court. “This seems prejudicial to the (Gov. Rick Scott),” she said. “It doesn’t seem to have any benefit.” When voters head to the polls for the general election, they’ll have

three proposed constitutional amendments to decide. Amendments 1 and 2 are initiatives, meaning activists got enough registered voters to sign petitions to get them on the ballot. Amendment 3 is legislatively-referred, meaning that the Florida Legislature put it before the voters. What voters will see on their ballots is: “Proposing an amendment to the State Constitution authorizing the Governor to prospectively fill a vacancy in a judicial office to which election for retention applies that results from a justice’s or judge’s reaching the mandatory retirement age, failure to qualify for a retention election, or failure to be retained through election. Under current law, the Governor may not act to fill such vacancies until after the current justice or judge completes his or her term.” In other words, if passed by voters, the amendment would allow an outgoing governor to fill Supreme Court and other judicial positions before sitting judges end their terms. Under the current system, a governor can’t fill a position until after a judge has stepped down, although the selection process begins before then. Here’s why many supporters and opponents of Amendment 3 rightly or wrongly think it’s all

NEW BEGINNINGS

about Scott. Florida limits governors to two terms. Scott assumed office on Jan. 4, 2011. The latest he’ll be governor is early January of 2019. In January, 2019, three Supreme Court justices will be ending their terms. A fourth will be stepping down when the calendars turn to 2017. Whoever wins the 2014 gubernatorial election will be nominating one justice, assuming others don’t step down early for any reasons. Whoever wins the 2018 election will appoint three justices under the current system. The three who’ll be stepping down in 2019 were vetted under or appointed by Democrat Lawton Chiles. Crist appointed the one stepping down in 2017 when he was the Republican governor. If Scott wins re-election this year, he’ll make his first and likely only Supreme Court appointment, if voters reject Amendment 3. If they pass it, then he’ll appoint four, the majority of the court’s seven members. If Charlie Crist wins the election, he could conceivably appoint four justices with or without Amendment 3, assuming voters re-elect him in 2018.

If Scott wins re-election this year, he’ll make his first and likely only Supreme Court appointment, if voters reject Amendment 3. If they pass it, then he’ll appoint four, the majority of the court’s seven members. Betty bristled about the proposed amendment’s possible consequences if passed. “There’s no precedence for this,” Betty said. Bill said what there’s no precedence for is the court facing the loss of three members simultaneously during a likely change of administrations. He said the Florida Legislature, which is Republican controlled, is acting in wisdom by giving whoever is elected in 2014 the opportunity to appoint new judges ahead of their departures. “Preemptively solving a problem before it becomes one,” he said. Statewide, there’s no visibly organized supporters or opponents of the proposed amendment. The Florida League of Women Voters is opposes the amendment, but hasn’t been campaigning against it. The general election will be on Nov. 4. Early voting will be from Oct. 20 to Nov. 1.

PORT ST. LUCIE — For Dave Donan, owner of EcoLube, Port St. Lucie, helping veterans any way he can is a matter of personal pride. On Oct. 9, he presented a check for $500 to Disabled American Veterans Post 113, located on California Boulevard in St. Lucie West, to help it in its mission to help veterans in need. One of those veterans, John Golden, who served in the Army in Afghanistan (1st of the 501st Paratrooper Infantry Regiment), was on hand at the auto center because of a van by DAV 113 that had been donated to Golden by inventor Donald Stone, and which was having service done. Also on hand were Dan DePagnier, chairman of the United Veterans of St. Lucie County, and DAV vice commander Art Edmonds and his wife, Cathy, who befriended Golden and are now helping him get back on his feet. Golden, formerly of Niagara Falls, NY, suffers from PTSD and TBI (traumatic brain injury). He doesn’t speak of his experiences except to say he saw “heavy combat.” He’s a respectful, and intense, young man whose goal is to get a degree from Keiser Uni-

Edmonds recounted how they met: “John (and his wife, Jamie) had just gotten down here, and he was lost, so he found the DAV hall. “After I learned about his situation, my wife and I got him a hotel. Competition to build structures out of canned food will feed hungry Treasure Coast residents ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Teams of students and professionals will soon be competing to design and build structures created completely out of canned goods. The international competition, called ‘Canstruction’, is an opportunity to not only win an award from the most widely known food drive event in the world, but more importantly, it is a way for these groups to have a direct impact on feeding the hungry right here on the Treasure Coast. The teams — composed of builders, contractors and students — will be creating their giant structures made entirely from canned goods and other food items at the Treasure Coast Square mall in Jensen Beach on Oct. 13. At the close of the event on Oct. 25, all of the food from the competition will be donated to the Treasure Coast Food Bank. The Treasure Coast Food Bank is joined by more than 100 cities

around the world coordinating Canstruction competitions. Highlighting the creativity and compassion of these teams that come together for the competition, these astounding structures are helping to change the world by collecting millions of pounds of food for local food banks and raising awareness about the issue of hunger. On a weekly basis, the Treasure Coast Food Bank serves over 100,000 individuals that are struggling to put food on their table, to include nearly 35,000 children and 12,000 seniors. A new twist on this year’s competition is the Treasure Coast Square Mall’s active involvement. Not only are they serving as the venue for the competition, but they are also going to provide promotional support to spread awareness about the event. This year’s competition will include the South Fork Chapter of Future Builders of America working in partnership with members of the Treasure Coast Builders Association. The sec-

ond team is the Speed, Power, and Manueverability (S.P.A.M.) Robotics Team 180. The S.P.A.M. Robotics team includes students from Martin County High School, Jensen Beach High School, South Fork High School, Community Christian, the Clark Advanced Learning Center, and members of the homeschool community. All of the Canstruction structures will be on display at the Treasure Coast Square mall in the Old Navy plaza area from Monday, Oct. 13 through Sunday, Oct. 25. Judges will be reviewing the structures and selecting winners in various categories including: design and structural integrity; best meal, best use of labels, jurors’ favorite, honorable mention, and people’s choice award. The Awards Ceremony will take place at Treasure Coast Square on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. For more information, go to treasurecoast.canstruction.org, stophunger.org or call (772) 4893034.

Learning life-long at IRSC Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The Fielden Institute for Lifelong Learning, a program of the Indian River State College Foundation, is looking for lifelong learners “age 50 or better.” The program offers seminars, field trips and learning groups in St. Lucie, Martin, Indian River and Okeechobee counties, as well as the Distinguished Lecture series held at IRSC campuses in Vero Beach and Stuart. Melissa DePriest, development coordinator for the IRSC Foundation, has just been appointed program director for the Fielden Institute. The fourth-generation St. Lucie County resident spoke recently about the Foundation and the Fielden Institute, which offers a college atmosphere without tests or grades. Courses are peer-led. “We’re a direct-support organization for IRSC,” she said. “We provide facilities support, faculty support and student support. We are the fundraising arm and give direct support, including high-technology equipment for students, endowed chairs and capital projects and improvements to enhance the learning environment at IRSC. “The Fielden Institute is a robust program, designed for folks 50 and better. We want to encourage folks to continue learning, with intellectually-based offerings, study groups, and field trips. There may be a study of history or more passion-driven offering, including gardening and cooking and writing. Folks used to be able to audit classes. That has changed nationally, and this is our attempt to serve the needs of a population that wants to continue learning but not in a standard

college format.” Courses are offered at all IRSC campuses with different offerings at each site. DePriest is eager to spread the word about offerings at the St. Lucie West-Pruitt campus because the area is growing so rapidly. “We want to grow the program to meet the needs,” she said. This year, the St. Lucie campus will offer “Celebrating Port St. Lucie’s History.” The two-session course, Oct. 15 and 22, will meet from 9-11:30 a.m. It will use the book, “Port St. Lucie at 50 - A City for all People,” and the docudrama, “City of Dreams,” and will be led by Richard McAfoos and Mary Dodge. The registration fee is $40. “An Introduction to Computers with Windows 7” will be offered in the fall semester on Nov. 10, 12, 17 and 19 and in the spring semester Jan. 13, 15, 20 and 22. Classes will run from 1-3 p.m. at the library computer lab at the St. Lucie West campus. The course is for the beginning student or those who need to brush up on basic skills. The registration fee is $65 and the peer leader is Chuck Morgan. On Nov. 17, peer leader Marci Davis will offer “Pages from an Alzheimer’s Caregiver’s Diary: Weariness, Wisdom and Wit.” Davis cared for her husband with the disease for nine years, and she shares her insights. Registration is $20. Two classes aim to help those who went to school before the digital revolution bridge that divide. “Feed Your Brain in the Digital Age,” will offer “Gadgets Galore Dec. 2 and “By Book or By Nook” Dec. 9. The first will be a hands-on session to learn how to use smartphones and tablets to download e-books and navigate apps. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own devices or test them at the

Melissa DePriest session. The second offering will show attendees how to locate free e-books that can be downloaded to a tablet, e-reader, phone or computer. The course will run from 1-2:30 p.m. and will be led by Kendra Auberry and Elaine

Sharing the love – and the music and on stage, in front of a live audience. Not only do members of the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society spend their year donating their time and talent to help raise money to help provide musical scholarships to tremendous, young potential artists, they also engage with students throughout St. Lucie, Martin, and Indian River counties during master’s classes, school programs and mentoring. When you attend a Tuesday night Jazz Jam at the Sunrise Black Box Theatre, part of your $6 cover charge ($5 if you’re a member) covers the cost of the venue and the delicious snacks and refreshments you’ll find on the table each week, but a portion of your ticket price also helps provide scholarships and even one-to-one mentoring opportunities for young musicians who gain so much from the chance to work with a pro and learn a few of the tricks of the trade. The same kind of modeling and teaching by example every parent tries to bestow on his or her own

Don Bestor children is in play for young musicians who hope to have a career “in the biz.” Watching someone older and wiser navigate everything from how to think and improvise on the fly to how to handle a tough crowd are lessons that simply cannot be effectively taught or appreciated in a classroom set-

ting. When a student becomes involved with the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society, through summer jazz camps, master’s classes, in school programs or as a regular attendee and hopeful at the weekly jazz jams and activities, you can bet that there will be notes of a completely different kind being taken and memorized. And a “pop quiz” for one of our young musicians is certainly not going to be a paper with multiplechoice questions. Instead, our students learn by climbing up on stage with the pros and having the opportunity to jam “with the big boys and girls.” If you’ve always wondered what it’s like to watch a star being born, all you have to do is stop by the Sunrise Black Box any Tuesday evening this fall or Wednesdays at the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens. There you’ll see the pros perform, and you’ll also have the chance to see the stars of tomorrow quivering and new, shaking their way onto the

ST. LUCIE WEST — One of the most unique and wonderful things about the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society is that the organization is chock-full of professional musicians who love what they do. They have a great time gathering and providing music at a price that everyone can enjoy, but nearly every musician in the Society also remembers what it was like getting started, breaking into the business and becoming a professional. And while practice may be both the answer and the punchline to the age-old joke, “How do you get to Radio City Music Hall?” any professional musician will tell you that having an opportunity to practice and play with the pros is an invaluable and rare experience for young musicians. To help the talented young musicians from our area cut their teeth and hone their musical chops, members of the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society have long offered opportunities for these talented up-and-comers to play with the pros – in practice

Making the Dyer Difference: Raising money for ALS Ice Bucket Challenge sponsoring GraceWay Village’s first-ever “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader” fundraiser held in late September at the Sunrise Black Box Theatre. The event, which paired very bright fifth graders with community leaders, helped raise more than $8,000 to feed, clothe, shelter and assist families in crisis in St. Lucie County. GraceWay Village has been working to equip families to live healthy in every aspect of their lives since its inception in 2008. Dyer Chevrolet Fort Pierce staff members, who meet monthly to consider all submitted applications and render a decision on the monthly award, chose to support GraceWay Village and its efforts to assist and improve the lives of families in the community. The hardest part about choosing to support ALS was figuring out a time when 70 staffers and 70 buckets of ice water could be coordinated between the many days of rain along the Treasure Coast. Showing support

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Sometimes you have to think outside the box a little to make a big splash, and, if you care big, it can make a big difference. Last month, members of the staff family at Dyer Chevrolet in Fort Pierce endured a chilly shower in a show of support for a staff member whose family has been forever changed by Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. More than 70 Dyer Chevrolet of Fort Pierce employees took part in the Ice Bucket Challenge to Benefit the Florida chapter of ALS Association and made a $3,000 Dyer Difference Award donation earmarked to help Florida families affected by the progressive neurodegenerative disease. In addition to helping families struggling with ALS in August, Dyer Difference staff members also chose to assist families struggling with homelessness, unemployment and crisis by

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — According to William Shakespeare “Good company and good wine make good people.” There will be a room full of good people sipping on fabulous wines on Oct. 20, when The Roseann Gregory Cancer Foundation presents the Harvest Wine and Dine at Tutto Fresco Italian Restaurant in Port St. Lucie. The fall winetasting event, to be held from 6-9 p.m. is the third winetasting that the foundation has held and the second one hosted by Tutto Fresco. The first one at Tutto Fresco sold out with nearly 140 people in attendance. The event will feature food pairings by Tutto Fresco’s renowned chef Pasquale Lamarra and an assortment of wines by Premier Beverages. There will also be raffles and a 50/50. The event’s proceeds will be donated by the foundation to various local cancer research centers, as well to organizations that assist local cancer patients. Foundation president and

DYER from page B7 for the family of one of its own who has been struggling with the effects of ALS was the easy part, Dyer staff members said. Nominations are accepted on a rolling basis for the Dyer Difference Award in St. Lucie County, and each month Dyer Chevrolet will announce the winner of that month’s award and present a check for $3,000 to be used to further the mission of the organization. If you know a nonprofit organization doing tremendous things and helping to make St. Lucie County a better community, please consider nominating them for a Dyer Difference Award by visiting www.dyerdifference. org and clicking on the St. Lucie County link. Organizations nominated must meet the criteria and show current 501 (c) 3 status and must be located in St. Lucie County. The nomination form is simple, user-friendly and easy to complete for organizations of any size. Nominations are good for a six-month period, and an organization can be recognized with the Dyer Difference Award once per calendar year. If you’d like to nominate an organization or learn more about the Dyer Difference, please visit www.dyerdifference. org today. The deadline for the next award is Oct. 31, so stop by today and show your support of the many caring, committed, community nonprofit organizations in St. Lucie County. Your simple nomination might help them continue the important work they’re doing in St. Lucie County and help continue the legacy of love created by the Dyer family with the Dyer Difference Award. Are you ready to help make a Dyer Difference?

PGA Golf Club to undergo major transformation Clubhouse to double in size; large outdoor area also to be added FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

ST. LUCIE WEST — The old-fashioned, 18-year old clubhouse at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie is undergoing a major transformation and upgrade that will advance and expand the structure; as well as pay homage to the PGA of America’s storied past. The old-fashioned, 18-yearold clubhouse at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie is undergoing a major transformation and upgrade that will advance and expand the structure, as well as pay homage to the PGA of America’s storied past. Tom Hoch Design of Oklahoma City is charged with creating a clubhouse that’s reflective of the high standards of the PGA, while celebrating its proud tradition

and future. The firm’s legendary namesake looks to combine the current “Old Florida” feel of the clubhouse with contemporary elements of style. The facility will be efficiently renovated first, and then expanded upon from 9,000 to 18,000 square feet of covered and air conditioned space. In addition, another 4,500 square feet will encompass a new back patio and event lawn area. “My vision is to create a club that’s a source of pride for both PGA members and the members of PGA Golf Club,” says Hoch, whose resume includes more than 250 facilities across 30 years, such as Camel back Golf Club, the Slammer and Squire Clubhouse at World Golf Village, and several Ritz-Carlton

golf properties. The first phase, projected to be complete this fall, will take the existing golf shop at PGA Golf Club and convert it into a “standard-bearer” for the golf industry. By leveraging modern design techniques on the existing high ceiling space and transferring the sales counter area to the center of the room, the golf shop will be renovated into a vibrant retail outlet. Simultaneously, the current dining room is being converted into a high-end pub that presents a design that celebrates the PGA, its Championships and its positive influence on the game worldwide. High-tech audio and video components will accentuate

the room, which will have the theatrical effect of a British Pub transformed into a modern-day sports bar. Phase 2 involves adding 9,000 square feet to the existing structure. New members-only (PGA and PGA Golf Club) locker rooms will offer separate private quarters from daily-fee customers. An octagon-shaped private member dining room and bar will overlook the 18th green of the Wanamaker Course in breathtaking fashion. An expansive outdoor covered pavilion, boardroom and wine room will offer new opportunities for hosting private parties and events. The existing kitchen will be completely renovated. Unique PGA of America artifacts will be interspersed throughout each room to give a structured approach for tracing the Association’s impressive storyline. For example, the main lobby will feature a gallery, which sets
