ST. LUCIE WEST — A parcel of land that had been in demand by commercial developers will now be used as a stormwater retention pond to reduce residential flooding. About 12 acres of a 16-acre lot at the northwest corner of Cashmere and St. Lucie West boulevards, owned by Martin Memorial Health System, as the site, which was the target for a new Walmart grocery store. The Port St. Lucie City Council turned down the proposal unanimously in March, voting in line with the Planning and Zoning Board’s recommendation. The city revised an interlocal agreement with the St. Lucie West Services District at the Sept. 22 City Council meeting. Under the old agreement, the city retained 25 percent of the stormwater fees collected by the Community Development District, and the district keeps the remaining 75 percent. The city’s share is typically $500,000 per year. The new agreement allows the city to fund an additional $400,000 per year to the district for purchasing property to help with stormwater runoff.
