PORT ST. LUCIE — It was a special night for Greg Oravec and his family. After months of campaigning, his mission to get back to City Hall came to an end Monday as he was sworn in as mayor. “It was one of the biggest moments of my life. If I had to rank it, it was after marriage and having my kids but right up there with one of life’s greatest moments,” Oravec said. Tonia Oravec, Greg’s wife, said it was special for her and their children to see Greg back on the dais. “I’m beyond words. I’m just proud and elated,” she said. Outgoing mayor JoAnn Faiella gave Oravec a hug and handed over the gavel, saying “It’s all yours” before a packed crowd of about 350 at City Hall. “Thank you for believing in me and entrusting me with this great responsibility,” Oravec told the crowd shortly after testing the gavel for his first time. It was a more joyful night than most at City Hall with Linda Bartz and Shannon Martin also being sworn in as council members. “I don’t care where you come from, where you think you might be going, there is no place better than our city,” Bartz said. Oravec promised to work with the council despite perceived differences stemming from his departure as city manager last year when he entered a separation agreement with the city after he released 85 pages of documents,

Reporter reflects on long career Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

TRADITION — Jack Behrens worked for the Associated Press for many years as an investigative reporter. He left that part of reporting a long time ago. “I left ‘gotcha’ journalism 30 years ago, and I’m glad I did,” he said. “It doesn’t do anything for the soul or the purpose of writing. Too many young people look at journalism that way. The term journalism is almost passé. They want to be communicators.” Behrens celebrated the work of many investigative reporters in his 1976 book, “The Typewriter Guerrillas,” in which he spotlighted the work of Carl Bernstein, Jack Anderson, Seymour Hersh, Pam Zekman and others. He is particularly proud of highlighting several women, who were almost invisible in the realm of investigative reporting. “It was a fight for them to get into investigative reporting,” Behrens said. “They feared women would be beat up or harmed. They wouldn’t give them assignments.” Behrens taught writing at Utica

College, at a time when author Alex Haley was writer-in-residence at nearby Hamilton College. The two became friends, a friendship that lasted until Haley’s death. “He called about putting a course syllabus together,” Behrens said. “We sat down, and I showed him my syllabus. He involved me in some ‘Playboy’ interviews he did. They were selected by the editors, and he didn’t feel he had the background. He enlisted my help when I could help. One was of trumpeter and boxer Miles Davis. Davis demanded that any interviewer get in the ring, I warned Alex. They went to Stillman’s Gym and got in the ring. They went a round and Davis didn’t let up. In the second round, Davis knocked him down and the fight stopped. He got the interview. Alex was that kind of person. He did things that would surprise you. He was mild-mannered and humble.” Together, Behrens and Haley wrote a textbook combining their more than 50 years of experience. That book was “The Writ-

Sidewalks and drainage help on the way on Cashmere Boulevard Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER

bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com

ST. LUCIE WEST — Walkers in St. Lucie West will soon be able to take a stroll along Cashmere Boulevard to get to and from Centennial High School with the addition of new sidewalks near the start of the new year. The construction, engineering and inspection phase is under way with Milestone Construction in St. Lucie West doing the work. The final approval for the sidewalk, which will run from Southwest Del Rio Boulevard to the Centennial, is set to go before the council Nov. 24. The project is one of many sidewalk installations the city is working on this year and next, due to the way federal grants work, said Port St. Lucie Engineering Department project coordinator Edie Majewski.

’ll never forget the look in her eyes as we gave her the keys to her new home. Juanita was her name, and she lived in the poorest of poor neighborhoods in Piedras Negras, Mexico. Before we arrived, she lived in shelters made of scrap lumber and cardboard, exposed to the elements and anyone who wanted to step foot inside. Our mission team had just spent a week building her a concrete block house, and she was truly grateful to have been given a secure, safe, sturdy home for the first time in her life.

Jason Vicars and Bill Whitt break for a moment to document their mission trip to Mexico However, what shocked us all even more was seeing the amount of joy and gratitude that permeated her life before we even laid the first block. Here was a woman who had nothing, and yet, she was so unbelievably and contagiously joyful, it was hard to describe. That was 15 years ago, and I still think of her family often. I

can see her smiling through the rain, thanking our team for their work. We also thanked her for teaching us a master’s course in joy, contentment and gratitude — in short, living life fully no matter what the circumstances. I remember Juanita because, by comparison, I have so much, and I still often forget to be thankful. The upcoming holiday season gives us a chance to talk about the type of joy she had. I like to think that there’s a little Thanksgiving and a little Black Friday in all of us. Thanksgiving says the way to be happy is to remember all you’ve been given. Black Friday says the way to be happy is to buy more things. Nevermind that your iPad mini is only a year old. The new one has a fingerprint reader! Life will be better if you get one or at least that’s what the slick ads tell you every day. Thanksgiving says we have enough. Black Friday says we need something else to make us complete. Thanksgiving says we find fulfillment in life by giving to others. Black Friday says life is all about getting as much as we can from others. It’s a battle inside each of us, and if I’m honest with myself, Black Friday comes out on top on most days. Growing the weed of discontentment is easy. Growing the beautiful flower of gratitude

takes constant discipline. The battle rages on in our culture, too. Each year, Black Friday takes more and more territory away from Thanksgiving, like an army advancing against an enemy nation. Stores are opening on Thanksgiving again, and many are starting their “Black Friday” sales even now, fighting for their chunk of the $2 billion-$3 billion we spend each holiday season. I have nothing against getting a good deal, but I do think we should remember where true happiness comes from this year. It can start with something as simple as writing down one thing you are thankful for each day between now and Christmas. You could blog about it, post it on Facebook or just write it down on a strip of construction paper. Each night at the dinner table, you could have each member of your family describe something new they’re thankful for, as they write it on a strip of paper and place it in a jar. Then, on Christmas, you can join the links together to form a meaningful decoration you’ll never forget. Let’s take it a step further. Feeling thankful is one thing. Giving thanks is another. Why not make it a goal to express your gratitude to one person each week? It will really brighten their day and yours!

Behrens also participated in discussions with Tom Clancy and James Michener on the art of writing. “Writers, like others, get together at conferences,” he said. “We got to know each other and thought we had something to contribute to beginning writers. One thing about writing is to establish a niche. I had a niche as an investigative writer. Clancy was an insurance investigator for his wife. His background was research. They lived in D.C., and his wife got invited to balls with admirals and other, from the Navy. Clancy picked up back talk and that led to “The Hunt for Red October.” Behrens’ latest book is “Camp David Presidents, Their Families and the World.” It tells the story of the presidential retreat in the Maryland mountains that was founded by Franklin Roosevelt and originally called Shangri- La. “I was a signal corpsman in the

Behrens wanted to shed some light on a place that doesn’t even exist on the map, except as a naval installation. “Camp David is so secret and secluded,” Behrens said. “The public doesn’t go there, and it won’t change in the near future. To get on the grounds, you have to have a written invitation from the president.” Behrens used public records to track down how each president viewed and used this perk of the

I tried to put two and two together.” Behrens is circumspect about non-governmental uses of the facility. “So many of the presidents had difficulties in their personal lives and in their views of how to manage them,” he said. “It was the public records that interested me. I was trying to show people how their money was being spent. This is public money, a large amount, although I never got individual figures.” For more information about Jack Behrens, visit the website, www. writerjackweb.com. “Camp David Presidents” is available at Amazon.com.

blocks people from saving or acquiring property and overshadows the dreams of a promised future with present despair born of poverty, violence and hopelessness. players and baseball players,” are the three most popular answers, in that order. “What if you can’t be an athlete?” he then asks. They have no answer. What are they being prepared for? What is wrong with our education system? We seem to be more concerned with what the children are having for lunch rather than how to prepare them to become responsible, self-reliant adults in order earn a living necessary for putting food on the table. The schools should be focused on what made America great and how to build and create independence and prosperity for future generations. It is beyond the experience of these children to consider becoming a lawyer, doctor, accountant or business person. We are dumbing down our children and replacing mo-

rality, values and achievement with the notion that anything is OK provided that it feels good. You need not worry about the future consequences, the government will take care of you. I recently observed a young college student studying notes for an exam. He was focused on five pages of notes that he had taken during class. The list included dates for when the Ice Age occurred and facts about the Inca Empire in Peru of 1532. Upon review of the notes, I concluded that he was taking a course in either world history or geography. When asked what the course subject he was studying, he replied, “American history.” I was shocked since there were no references to Columbus, Washington, the revolution or the civil war on any of the pages. When I asked why, he replied that he thought they had not gotten that far in class. What are we teaching our children? What are we preparing them for? Today we have over 100 million

n viewing the condition and state of the world and where America’s changing values are headed, it is awfully difficult to talk about business without engaging in both a political and social discussion. After all, much has changed since my school years as the world seems to be heading further away from the values, principles and morality upon which America was founded. Perhaps one of the greatest moral imperatives we face is our need to replace the welfare state with an opportunity society. For every day that we allow the current conditions to continue, we are condemning the poor, particularly the poor children, of being deprived of their rights as Americans. After all, America is about opportunity and individual achievement. Welfare should be a system for helping those who are in need and cannot help themselves. The welfare state this country has created reduces the poor from citizens to clients. It is a disease that breaks up families, minimizes work incentives,

SIDEWALKS from page A4 “We have projects, it’s just (the Federal Department of Transportation) has to tell us when we are going to get the money to work on the projects,” she said. The city has been applying for federal grants since 2005 to drastically increase the number of available sidewalks, Majewski said. For the year, the city will likely have started and/or completed 13 sidewalk projects. Just eight such projects were completed from the start of the ’08 fiscal year to the start of the ’13 fiscal year. “It just so happens that most of the ones we got are coming through this year,” she said. Marquee Development placed the winning construction bid for $257,000, all of which the city is guaranteed to get back from the FDOT from a local agency program agreement with the state that funds sidewalk improvements for municipalities statewide. The city is required to pay $55,000 for the construction, engineering and inspection services and — $30,000 of which may be paid back — and $24,285 for the design phase, which is not refundable. “It’s not very costly for the city

at all,” Majewski said. New sidewalks will also eliminate some flooding problems throughout the city, Majewski said. “The problem in front of the high school is that there’s standing water, and building a sidewalk will allow us to create a grade for the water to run off,” she said. The aim is to get sidewalks built in areas close to school bus stops first to give students a place to stand in the mornings, so, after the Cashmere project, St. Lucie West won’t see another significant sidewalk like that be built for a couple years, Majewski said. St. Lucie West has far more sidewalks than other areas, so it will take a temporary back seat. Only Tradition, which has them along nearly every road due to the developers being required to build them along with roads, is closer to having a sidewalk along with every road. Some small ones will be built sporadically to fill some “missing links,” though, she said. Most of those will likely be completed in 2015 with areas including Southwest Country Club Drive from Northwest Amherst Drive to Northwest California Boulevard and Northwest East Torino Parkway from Peacock Run Apartments to Winter Lakes Apartments.

More Indian River Lagoon money may be on the way Patrick McCallister and Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITERS

bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TREASURE COAST — The Indian River Lagoon might be getting some much-needed healing sooner rather than later thanks to a bipartisan pair of Representatives. That hope for help recently passed a vote in the House of Representatives, but 101 others still have to weigh in on their plan, namely the Senate and president. “It’s another nice win for our lagoon and our efforts to clean up our water,” Congressman Patrick Murphy, D-Jupiter, said in a phone interview after the House vote. “There were two improvements to this bill (Congressman Bill Posey) and I were able to include.” Posey is a Republican from Rockledge, whose district covers the Space Coast, which is just north of Murphy’s district. The two co-sponsored the Estuary Urgent Needs Priority Program Act. If passed by the Senate and

signed by President Barack Obama, the act would make the Environmental Protection Agency prioritize its funding to the national estuaries based on competitive evaluations. In other words, the money would have to head to the most damaged estuaries first. Additionally, the bill, if it becomes law, would also drastically slash how much National Estuary Program money goes to administrative costs. Last year, the program funded 28 estuary cleanup efforts nationwide, with each estuary getting about $538,000, totaling 60 percent of the total fund. The rest of the money covered administrative costs. Posey said the bill is a matter of common sense. “We’re requiring, in statute for the first time, that the money Congress wants spent on lagoons and estuaries actually gets to the lagoons and estuaries,” he said. “The bureaucracy up here is a Pac Man. They chase the money around and gobble it.” Posey said Murphy and he are still baffled about what the “ad-

BRADENTON — Fort Pierce Central faced a familiar foe in the district 8-8A quarterfinal last Friday in Manatee High School, but were unable to come away with a victory. Manatee (10-1) relied on its running game, led by junior running back Johnnie Lang, who had 32 carries for 232 yard and two touchdowns, to win 28-20. “We got a lot of bodies on him, but just weren’t able to bring him down,” Central Head Coach Josh Shaffer said. “If you look at most of our big games this season, stopping the run was the theme … That kid is a very, very good player. He broke a lot of tackles and made a lot of nice cuts, and we just couldn’t stop him.” Central started off slowly in the first half, with quarterback Jack Celidonio completing just six of 14 passes for 23 yards. Manatee led 14-0 at the half with touchdowns on a 25-yard pass from quarterback Sloan Drummond to Kelvin McKnight and a 29-yard run by Lang. Central rallied back in the second half and made the game

Finally, it really is more blessed to give than receive. A recent article in The Wall Street Journal (“Can Money Buy You Happiness?”) cited numerous psychological studies that found money really can make you happy, but not how you think. It’s not about how much you get, but how much you give. Generous, grateful people are happier! That’s why Juanita in Mexico could be so happy. She didn’t have much, but what she did have, she freely shared. She knew what many of us struggle to understand: Joy comes from giving, not getting. My church, Sunlight Community Church, is offering its members numerous ways to give back to the community in the weeks ahead. We are putting together 100 Thanksgiving baskets for those in need this year, as well as volunteering with and supporting Sarah’s Kitchen and Mustard Seed ministries. We also have filled almost 500 Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes to

close, though. Celidonio threw two touchdown passes in the third quarter to Antonio Hadden to tie the game at 14-14. Celidonio finished 18-35 with 207 yards and two passing touchdowns. He also added a rushing touchdown. Manatee scored on a 73-yard pass from Drummond to Kavious Price at the end of the third quarter and a 40-yard run by Lang in the fourth. Celidonio scored on a 3-yard run with about a minute left in the game to make the score 28-20, but Central failed to recover an onside kick. Manatee ran out the clock to end the game. “We tried to make too much happen in the first half, but, in the second half, we settled down and executed the details,” Shaffer said. This marks the third time in four years Central (4-6) lost to Manatee in playoffs. Last year, Central beat Manatee 17-15 in the regional championship. Prior to this loss, Central made the regional final for three straight years. “We were close in a lot of games this year,” Shaffer said. “We’re a young team, and we’ve got a lot of kids coming back next year, so we’ll move on from here.” Manatee plays at Vero Beach (11-0) in the regional championship 7 p.m. Friday. ship overseas to less fortunate children. PERRY from page A9 Americans out of work. We have over 50 million on food stamps. Crime seems to be the only big business that the government has ignored. In Chicago, over this past Fourth of July weekend, nine were dead and dozens injured from gun violence alone. When parents cannot control their children in the home, then how in the world can we expect the government to control our children in our streets? I think most of us can agree that the quality of our education system needs to improve. Of those who enter high school, 30 percent do not graduate. This leads to a declining society. We need to teach our children about the founding of our country and the constitution. American history needs be brought back into the classroom lest we make the same mistakes of the past. How can we expect our children to become self-sufficient when high school does not teach students the basic skills to balance a checkbook or the basic understanding of how credit works. I urge all my neighbors to become informed, seek common ground and engage in intelligent discussions that work toward a resolution.

OK, once again I have gotten a bit off track from business, but there is a connection. There is a connection to government policies, since laws and regulations affect the way we do business. So, I would like to make one more point on the subject. It’s been several years, and our political leaders in Washington and even along the Treasure Coast can no longer place the blame on the opposing party or the prior administration for the social and economic challenges we face. The governing bodies at all levels are not delivering on their promises. We need forward-thinking leaders, not career politicians. They need to recognize the root cause of the problems we face and engage in intelligent and honest dialogue in order to, once again, make America great. Let’s not only hope for a better future, let us all act and do whatever it takes to bring back some of the values instilled by our founding fathers. Instead of complaining to your neighbor, become informed and get involved in the solution. Let your voice be heard by attending public meetings and becoming a part of the solution. Learn who your congressmen and women and representatives are at all

levels, and let them know where you stand on the issues. Becoming an informed citizen not only makes you a wiser voter but can enhance all of life’s experiences, from planning a career to raising a family. RIVER from page A11 ministrative costs” actually are. He said the two have repeatedly asked the EPA to explain them to no avail. Murphy said the experience is annoying. “We want that money going to the estuary, not overhead,” he said. The new bill would allocate $27 million each year from 2014 through 2018, requiring 80 percent to be split among the estuaries, and 5 percent would go toward administration. The remaining 15 percent would be distributed based on need,

with estuaries having the most problems with obstacles such as extensive seagrass habitat losses, recurring harmful algae blooms, unusual marine mammal mortalities and invasive exotic species getting the most. That would leave about $770,000 for the Indian River Lagoon, not counting need-based money if awarded. The bill comes on the heels of Florida voters overwhelming approving Amendment 1, which dedicates some monies from real-estate transactions to the Land Acquisition Trust Fund. Lagoon advocates claimed before the election that it stood to help acquire lands needed to restore natural

southern flow of water from Lake Okeechobee. Nutrient-rich waters released into the St. Lucie River from Lake O are among the lagoon’s worst problems. Along with that, counties and municipalities along the 150-mile Indian River Lagoon — which is formed by Mosquito Lagoon, along with the Banana and Indian rivers — have been adopting stronger fertilizer ordinances to reduce the flow of phosphorous and nitrogen into the lagoon. Those ordinances are based on scientific suggestions the Tampa Bay Estuary Program has put forward. Posey, who worked as an engi-

neer on the Apollo Program, said the Indian River Lagoon is not rocket science. “It’s not a complicated problem,” he said. “We know our lagoon is in trouble because we’ve allowed bad stuff to be put in it. We know it’s not going to be better until we stop putting bad stuff in it. We know it’s not one source of bad stuff; it’s multiple sources of bad stuff. Once we stop putting bad stuff in it, we need to clean up the bad stuff that’s already there.” At press time, the Senate hasn’t scheduled a vote on the bill. Murphy predicted it would be rolled into a larger bill and likely pass.

including letters and emails, that suggested council members wanted to oust him. The release led to a state investigation that resulted in Faiella and Council members Ron Bowen and Shannon Martin receiving civil infractions for violating open records laws. Martin paid her fine, and Faiella’s charge was dismissed because the timeframe for her right to a speedy trial had exceeded. Oravec said people have asked him how the council is going to be able to work together, namely him and Councilman Ron Bowen. “I want everyone here to know I’m excited to serve with Mr. Bowen and this whole team,” Oravec said. In a previous interview, Oravec said he respects Bowen’s dedication to service as a former Marine and longtime council member. Bowen seemed to have no qualms with working alongside Oravec and said he hadn’t thought about how the council might change as a result. In his first memo to the council Nov. 14, Oravec said the council’s different styles, opinions and positions will help the city rather than harm it. “I believe in the potential of this team and look forward to partnering with you to build a better city, a better home and a better tomorrow.”

TRADITION — The Vaccine & Gene Therapy Institute of Florida, a leading, non-profit biomedical research institute, today announced a new collaborative research agreement with TapImmune Inc., forming a partnership to advance TapImmune’s proprietary, targeted cancer vaccines into mid-stage, Phase II human clinical trials for the treatment of breast and ovarian cancers. These highly promising therapeutic cancer vaccine candidates were developed by VGTI Florida’s director of Cancer Vaccines and Immune Therapies program, Keith Knutson, Ph.D. The goal is to prevent breast and ovarian cancer recurrence for patients who achieve remissions following standard-ofcare treatment. The vaccine works by enabling the immune system to target and eradicate any residual cancer cells or newly arising cancer cells that express the antigens delivered by the vaccine. VGTI Florida will work with TapImmune to design and execute the Phase II clinical programs. This includes the design of the clinical protocols, selection of clinical trial sites, recruitment of key opinion leaders

TREASURE COAST — A Thanksgiving without turkey is like no Thanksgiving at all. That’s why Treasure Coast Food Bank strives to provide turkeys for every family who otherwise wouldn’t be able to share in the iconic American tradition. Help Treasure Coast Food Bank provide turkeys for families who don’t have enough to eat by bringing a frozen turkey to one of several locations on Nov. 22. Treasure Coast Food Bank will have its refrigerated trucks stationed at several locations throughout the Treasure Coast between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Drop off turkeys at Harley Davidson in Stuart, Archie’s Seabreeze in Fort Pierce, Enchanted Florist in Tradition, Perkins Restaurant and Bakery in Port St. Lucie, CVS Pharmacy in Vero Beach or Winn Dixie in Sebastian. “While whole turkeys aren’t a part of the food we have available on a regular basis for those in need of food, we strive to help everyone celebrate the traditions of Thanksgiving, including turkeys for as many families in need as possible,” said Treasure Coast Food Bank CEO Judy Cruz. “We expect to distribute thousands of turkeys to families this year.” The Turkey Drop is part of Treasure Coast Food Bank’s Great Treasure Coast Holiday Food and Fund Drive, which runs through the end of December. The donations of dollars and food not only provide holiday meals but will help stock area food pantries to ensure that hungry people have access to food throughout the upcoming months. In addition to dropping off a turkey, people can get involved by hosting an online or traditional Food & Fund Drive. Set up your food drive through Treasure Coast Food Bank’s website, stophunger. org. All money donated to Treasure Coast Food Bank is tax-deductible, and donors receive a receipt for each monetary gift. This is

also an easy way for departments, companies, schools or organizations to compete against each other. Each group can set up their own team page and keep track of donations. For more information about the Great Treasure Coast Holiday Food and Fund Drive or to register your online or traditional food drive, please visit www. stophunger. org. have a substantial risk of disease recurrence. This is largely because of tumor cells that escape from being destroyed during primary treatment. All it takes is a few malignant cells to continue to circulate in the body until they eventually anchor and metastasize. Because these cancer cells already survived primary therapy, they are typically drug-resistant and much more difficult to treat,” he said. Knutson’s cancer vaccine technology offers a solution because the vaccine targets proteins expressed on the patient’s tumor cells. Antigens contained in each vaccine are genetically matched to the antigens expressed on the surface of the individual’s tumor cells, determined by genetic and molecular profiling. This results in a targeted, potent immune response with few side-effects. TapImmune Inc. Voices for Children via GAL FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

TREASURE COAST — Passionate and committed volunteers donate countless hours serving the needs of the children to whom they are assigned in the Guardian ad Litem program of Florida’s 19th Judicial Circuit Court. However, often financial burdens arise that are not covered by the GAL program, itself. To help meet those needs, Jim

Pawlak recently resurrected the long-dormant Voices for Children of Okeechobee and the Treasure Coast (Voices OTC) and was awarded 501(c)3 status in 2014. Voices OTC was originally founded in 2008, but with no one at the helm, it offered little, if any, support to Guardian ad Litem. Now, the nonprofit is building vigorous and productive relationships with the business community as well as private, public, civic and faith-based groups as

a means to identifying and developing resources and support. The goal is 100-percent representation of abused, neglected, and abandoned children under the 19th Judicial Circuit Court’s jurisdiction. Voices OTC is dedicated to raising the funds needed to cover costs and expenses for children that are simply not covered by state monies. That could include such things as a class photo, prom dress, tickets to a movie,

sporting event or play, soccer uniform, football, new outfit for the first day of school or the most basic needs, like properly-fitting shoes or a bed. Without the support of Voices and its Guardians ad Litem, plus the generosity of the community, these things that most of us consider “normal” would be beyond the reach of these children. In 2013, Voices sponsored

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Thanks to the nearly 4,000 Port St. Lucie residents and visitors who attended the Bonfire & Hayride event celebrating the grand opening of the city’s McCarty Ranch Preserve earlier this month. Those who traveled west to this magnificent property participated in lots of free family fun and entertainment in the great outdoors. Boys and girls enjoyed pony

rides, the petting zoo, face painting and bounce houses. The bonfire glowed brightly while folks took hayrides around the property. Fishing, kayaking and horseback riding, plus live music by Oddessey also entertained the large crowd. McCarty Ranch Preserve is an unmanned park open to the public from 7 a.m. to sunset, daily. The McCarty Ranch is 3,100 acres of largely unspoiled,

TREASURE COAST — Most people have fond memories receiving gifts during the holiday season with family and friends. It’s a moment kids wait for each year. Whatever the holiday, the excitement people get as they are just about to tear through some wrapping paper to find something new is hard to match. There are some who never had that feeling before, though. Guardians for New Futures is doing its best to make sure underprivileged have a reason to smile throughout the holiday season, and Black Friday can be the perfect time for shopping for a child in need, Guardians for New Futures president Debbie Butler said. Each year, the nonprofit organization teams up with area human services groups to identify neglected children in Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties, from birth to 17 years old, who often have

Debbie Butler President, Guardians for New Futures “At first I took 10 kids, and we got them everything they wanted. Then I said, ‘Well let me get a few more,’ so then I got 10 more and then 10 more. Taylor has taken on 30 again this year but expects to finish the season with 50. “I know it’s really appreciated,” she said. Jack and Bobbi Sopher got on board with the program last year and plan to do so again this year. “We had two foster girls for a year and learned of all the good and bad and sad things that foster kids go through, and it sounded like an organization we’d like to support,” Jack Sopher said. “You can put a smile on a kid’s face instead of them wondering where their next meal or pair of clothes or shirt for school is going to come from.” This year, Butler said they’ve received wish lists that include games, sports equipment, clothes and one fish tank. Butler said when she was a sponsor, she shopped for a skeptical 8-year-old boy and his sisters. “I said, ‘Well, what do you want Santa Claus to bring you?’ The little boy says to me, ‘There’s no Santa Claus.’ I said, ‘OK. Maybe there’s no Santa Claus, but maybe there’s somebody good out there that does good things. What would you want if there’s somebody like that?’ He thought for a while, and he said, ‘I’d want something for Mia (his dog),’” Butler said. She shopped for the boy and his sisters, and the girls were excited for their gifts, as expected. The boy went through some gifts for himself before getting to a few that were for his dog. “He jumps up, and he goes, ‘Mia got presents! Mia got presents!’ and then every time I’d go to this child’s house after that, he’d tell

me how Mia would get on the bed and what Mia would do with the presents. After that, he was just my buddy, and he was so happy.” The charity also provides gifts for kids in Department of Juvenile Justice system. “Some of the requests are just humble that it just breaks your heart. We’ve heard stories from case managers and from the (Department of Juvenile Justice). “They had a little boy in there,

been removed from their homes due to bad living conditions, and pair them with sponsors — people who are willing to donate and shop for those who may not receive gifts otherwise. The St. Lucie West-based charity provided more than 400 Treasure Coast kids with gifts last year, and each kid got about five gifts, Butler said. “It was amazing, and every child that asked for a bicycle last year, got a bicycle. And that was between 70 and 100 bikes,” she said, adding that many of those were donated by the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office. The program started in 2008 after Butler took over as the charity’s board president. “Thankfully, it has grown so much,” Butler said. “We wanted to be sure that all of the children that are in this horrible situation get gifts.” There’s no minimum or maximum requirement on what sponsors provide. Sponsors get paired up with kids based on what the sponsor can give and what the kid needs or wants. “Sometimes it can be quite sad. Some kids ask for food … we had one child ask for a laptop, and we actually had someone who got the child the laptop and got her a wireless connection and a printer. “I was on a radio show one time, one of the board members and I, and this grandmother called up and talked about how that gift had changed that child’s life because she was kind of struggling in school. And when she called up, the girl was actually on her way to college,” she said. Susan Taylor, a Lawnwood Medical Center emergency room nurse, said she’s been sponsoring kids for seven years and gets her coworkers to help. “I thought well I probably have enough friends who would love to do this, and I took the stack to the emergency room where I work and everyone was so thrilled to get involved and shop for these kids,” Taylor said.

‘Camelot’ calls PSL 4th grade student Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The musical “Camelot” has such an impressive pedigree. It was written by Alan J. Lerner and Frederick Loewe and was based on the T.H. White novel, “The Once and Future King.” It won four Tony awards with a cast that included Julie Andrews, Richard Burton and Robert Goulet in his Broadway debut. It was said to be a favorite of John Kennedy’s, a classmate of Lerner’s at Harvard, and became associated, in an almost mythological way, with the Kennedy administration after the president’s assassination. The national touring company brings “Camelot” to the Sunrise Theatre Dec. 3. In an interesting twist, the Sunrise Theatre and Phoenix Entertainment have selected Conor Pollack, a fourth-grader at River’s Edge Elementary School in Port St. Lucie, to play Tom of Warwick in the production. Local auditions were held at the Sunrise Oct. 16, with video submissions then being sent to the production’s casting director. Conor has appeared at the Sunrise in “King Arthur’s Quest” and “Treasure Island” as part of the 2014 Missoula Children’s Theatre Sumer Camp. Mark Poppleton plays Merlin and King Pellinore in the production. He spoke by phone

from Rapid City, S.D., where the company was appearing. He said this production had some new elements. “The orchestration is phenomenal,” he said. “They worked with the Lerner & Loewe estates for the changes. The 1960s orchestrations were all strings and sounded canned and homogenized. They’ve brought in Renaissance instruments to enhance the story. For the battle, they’ve brought in drums that give a sense of battle, of what’s happening. “Also, a lot of dialogue was dated, with ‘60s references. They’ve taken the 1960s feeling out of it and streamlined it. It still has all of the same songs and beautiful music.” Poppleton spent 18 months touring with “The Addam’s Family,” and, when that tour ended, he moved easily into this one. He is enjoying his dual roles. “They are completely different characters,” he said. “Merlin is iconic. I grew up with Merlin from the movie ‘Excalibur.’ Being the sage Merlin is fun. King Pellinore is hysterical. He’s so dim-witted, it’s fun to play. He lost his kingdom when he went hunting and forgot where he lived. He roamed the country for 18 years and met King Arthur as a boy, Wart. When he stumbled into Camelot 18 years later, Arthur is King. Pellinor is to King Arthur much like Colonel

Photo courtesy of the Sunrise Theatre Conor Pollack, a fourth-grader at River’s Edge Elementary School in Port St. Lucie, will play the role of Tom of Warwick in ‘Camelot’ when the national touring company brings the show to the Sunrise Theatre Dec. 3. Pickering in ‘My Fair Lady’ was to Henry Higgins.” Of course, the show has some beautiful songs, including the title tune and the ballad, “If Ever I Would Leave You,” the song that made Robert Goulet as star. “Goulet was going to be fired,” Poppleton said. “They didn’t like his acting, but he was a drinking buddy of Richard Burton’s, and he had a beautiful voice.” Goulet remained and the song became his signature. Poppleton said that the production is lavish with decorative, if

heavy, costumes and beautiful sets and lighting. “The directors said it’s a chamber piece in epic form,” he said. “It’s grand. “It’s a big show, a grand show. I’m so glad to be a part of it.” The Sunrise Theatre, 117 S. Second St. Fort Pierce, presents “Camelot” Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $69 and $59. For tickets, call the box office at (772) 461-4775 or order online at www.sunrisehteatre.com.

TREASURE COAST — Teams of students and professionals recently competed to design and build structures created completely out of canned goods as part of an international competition called Canstruction. The competition gave local students and experts an opportunity to not only win an award from the most widely known food drive event in the world, but, more importantly, it allowed these groups to provide 2,087 meals for hungry residents on the Treasure Coast. The teams — composed of builders, contractors and students — created giant structures made entirely from canned goods and other food items at the Treasure Coast Square mall in Jensen Beach. The structures were on display from Oct. 13-25 at the mall in the Old Navy Plaza. At the close of the event, the structures were dismantled and more than 2,500 pounds of food was donated to the Treasure Coast Food Bank for distribution to hungry residents. On a weekly basis, the Treasure Coast Food Bank serves over 100,000 individuals that are struggling to put food on their table, to include nearly 35,000 children and 12,000 seniors. “We were delighted to see the energy of the two teams as they built their structures and the commitment the students had to helping to end hunger through their participation in Canstruction. This is the next generation of young people who will be helping us in the fight to eliminate food insecurity on the Treasure Coast,” said Treasure Coast Food Bank CEO Judith Cruz. Treasure Coast Square was actively involved in this year’s competition throughout the Canstruction event. Not only

did the mall serve as the venue for the competition, but staffers also provided promotional support to spread awareness about the event and hunger on the Treasure Coast. “Treasure Coast Square was thrilled to team up with such an impactful charity like the Treasure Coast Food Bank to host Canstruction,” said Sean Carroll, Treasure Coast Square director of marketing and business development. “We always enjoy hosting events such as this, which allow our guests to give back to the community while having fun. Canstruction was a huge success and brought out the creativity in the Treasure Coast community, and we look forward to hosting the event again next year.” This year’s competition included the South Fork Chapter of Future Builders of America working in partnership with members of the Treasure Coast Builders Association. The second team was the Speed, Power, and Manueverability (S.P.A.M.) Robotics Team 180. The S.P.A.M. Robotics team included students from Martin County High School, Jensen Beach High School, South Fork High School, Community Christian, the Clark Advanced Learning Center and members of the homeschool community. Judges reviewed the structures and selected winners in a variety of categories in addition to a “People’s Choice award,” which was based on spectators at the mall being able to select their favorite by texting their choice to Treasure Coast Square. This year’s judges included Patricia Roebling, P.E., city of Port St. Lucie interim assistant city manager and city engineer; Port St. Lucie City Manager Jeff Bremer; owner of Electronics by Design Nick Vlangas; Martin County Commissioner Doug Smith, Martin County School Board member Marsha Powers, and WPTV Newschannel 5 reporter Jon Shainman. The South Fork Chapter of Future Builders of America took home trophies in design and structural integrity, best use of

Treasure Coast Food Bank is the largest hunger relief agency on the Treasure Coast, providing 10 million of pounds of food to over 200 charitable organizations in Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin and Okeechobee counties serving those in need. In addition to food distribution, Treasure Coast Food Bank provides numerous programs that not only solve the immediate problems of hunger but help individuals and families gain long-term food security. For more information on Treasure Coast Food Bank, call (772) 489-3034, log on to www. stophunger.org, visit our Facebook page at www.facebook. com/tcfoodbank, or follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/ tcfoodbank. Canstruction is a unique competition that has teams designing and building structures built only from canned goods. After the structures are built, they go on display in the teams’ local community. At the end of Canstruction, all food used is donated to local hunger

relief organizations such as the Treasure Coast Food Banks. This year, the Treasure Coast Food Bank was joined by more than 100 cities around the world coordinating Canstruction competitions. For more information on Canstruction, visit www. canstruction.org. Treasure Coast Square is an indoor mall with an exterior Lifestyle Center conveniently located at the intersection of NW Federal Hwy & Jensen Beach Blvd. Anchored by Macy’s, Dillard’s, JCPenney and Sears, it also features more than 120 specialty stores including Forever 21, PANDORA, Victoria’s Secret PINK, Teavana, Buckle, Francesca’s Collections, hhgregg, Express, Old Navy and many more. While at Treasure Coast Square, guests can also see the latest movies at the Regal 16 Cinemas theater complex. Shoppers can dine at Hwy 55 Burgers Shakes & Fries, Ruby Tuesday or one of the grab and go choices such as Chickfil-A, Cinnabon, or Tropical Smoothie Café. The mall is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call (772) 692-9401 or visit www.simon. com.
