TREASURE COAST — Will Weatherford, Speaker of the Florida House, was flooded with Lake Okeechobee, the C-44 Canal, St. Lucie River, and Indian River Lagoon.

On Monday, Nov. 11, State Sen. Joe Negron, R-Palm City, gave Weatherford an extensive tour of area waterways damaged by massive releases of water from Lake Okeechobee over the summer.

The tour was an unsubtle sales pitch to get the speaker to back recommendations in the Florida Senate Select Committee on the Indian River Lagoon and Lake Okeechobee Basin report. The committee released the report on Nov. 5. Those recommendations have a $220 million price attached to them.

TREASRE COAST — Monica Bartholomew got the news nine times. One family member after another announced they’d developed diabetes.

“I was the last one to be informed I had diabetes,” she said.

No. 10 in one family.

Bartholomew didn’t flinch when she got the diagnosis. It seemed like a normal part of life. People grow up, get jobs, have families, develop diabetes and get put on medications. Metformin in her case — one of the most common treatments for type 2 diabetes.

She figured you pop some pills and go on with the day and life.

It never occurred to her that type 2 diabetes was a preventable disease that can have catastrophic consequences.

The 61-year-old’s brother, Phillip, lost toes to the disease, and was getting close to losing a foot.

Still didn’t scare her. He died of unrelated causes before the amputation.

“There was also cancer in the family,” Bartholomew said. “It just wasn’t going to happen to me.”

Then her younger sister, Rita, was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Everything changed. She’d done research and found out just how bad the disease could be and shared it all with the family.

So Bartholomew jumped on it when she got the chance to participate in the second phase of a Volunteers in Medicine Clinic, Stuart, diabetes prevention and treatment study at the YMCA of the Treasure Coast.

Too much weight can cause type 2 diabetes. Losing it can help reverse the disorder.

PORT ST. LUCIE — Steve Levy has some practice lifting heavy burdens. The 64-year-old was handed a diagnosis of younger onset Alzheimer’s about five years ago. Earlier this month he set a new record for his age and weight class at the World Powerlifter League’s World Championship in Las Vegas.

“I finished first in my group and won the gold medal and had an opportunity to set a new world record for the deadlift in my group by lifting 440 pounds,” he said in a telephone interview after the meet.

ing in the session,” Negron said in an interview after the tour.

That burden of proof will have a lot of competitors in the upcoming 60-day session of the Florida Legislature, which will convene on March 4. Those competitors include Weatherford, Wesley Chapel, backing of Gov. Rick Scott’s proposal to cut the state budget by $100 million as part of a plan to reduce taxes by about $500 million.

“It was a great day for the Treasure Coast to personally show the speaker what’s happened to the community, because of these discharges,” Negron said.

“I’m very optimistic we’ll be given every opportunity to make our case.”

The report recommends, among other things, elevating portions of the Tamiami Trail, State Road 90, to allow for more southern flow of water to reduce the need for Lake Okeechobee discharges into eastern and western canals. Additionally, the committee recommended expanding funding for reservoirs to reduce sediments and nutrients before water heads to the St. Lucie and Indian rivers.

During Weatherford’s visit, he met with local elected officials and waterway advocates.

“It’s not a silver bullet,” Donald Voss, founder of Marine Cleanup Initiative, told Weatherford. “It’s

all these bullets.”

State Rep. MaryLynn “ML” Magar, R-Tequesta, told Weatherford it was important for the Florida House to back all the report’s proposals, including one for the state to buy land for the Army Corps of Engineers to use for settling water before it goes down canals toward the Indian River.

“I’ve seen the degradation (of local waterways) over many, many years,” she said. “We need to buy the land and they need to fund the projects.”

Negron and allies are getting some help to convince Weatherford and other legislators to back the proposals. The United Way of Martin County is asking Treasure Coast residents and businesses adversely affected by last summer’s massive water releases from Lake Okeechobee to complete an online survey.

“We looked at it as more than an environmental issue,” Jim Vojcsik, executive director, said.

“We looked at it as an economic issue, a health issue.”

The United Way hopes to get at least 100 completed surveys. It intends to pass along results to local, state and federal officials, along with area chambers of commerce.

Looking right saves lives It’s late autumn, nearing winter. In Florida that means more bicycles are on the roads — and more bicyclists die there. November and December are the peak of Florida’s bicycle-fatality season, which runs roughly to March.

If that reminder to drivers they have legal obligations to give bicycles at least a yard when passing looks familiar, you’ve likely seen me on the roads. Those words are on a sign I’ve recently taken to wearing when bicycling.

You see, I love cycling. When I moved to Martin County seven months ago, I was looking forward to bicycling around my new home. I was in for a shock. The Treasure Coast has the worst drivers I’ve ever encountered. I’m not alone in that assessment.

Tod Mowery, St. Lucie County Commissioner, loves bicycling, too. He largely stopped riding the roads, because of the number of dangerous drivers he encountered. When a friend was seriously injured in a collision, Mowery pretty much hung up the pedals.

But there’re other reasons. A lack of, or resistance to, driver education is a big one.

“I’ve been yelled out at motorists from two lanes away I wasn’t even affecting, telling me to get on the sidewalk where I belong,” Bustos said.

Me, too. But, never before I started riding around the Treasure Coast. There might be a reason for that.

Earlier this month, the Bill Bone law firm released a study it commissioned examining driver knowledge about and attitudes toward bicycle road rules. About 16 percent of respondents said that bicycles simply don’t belong on roads.

some pretty frightening interactions with cars.

I’ve had numerous conversations with people who’ve said they’ve quit riding around the Treasure Coast after collisions, near hits, or general fear of drivers’ frequent bad attitudes. The Treasure Coast is the only place where I’ve been in collisions. Not once, by the way.

Two drivers have hit me. One clipped the mirror off my handlebar as he rushed to get into a strip mall. The other squeezed me to the sidewalk in his hurry to get into a restaurant parking lot. A

third crossed over the bike lane when turning to shop at a big-box retail store, and I hit him. Not hard, fortunately, thanks to some pretty good brakes.

In seven months I was thrice in the most common vehicle-on-bike incident.

“One of the most common crash types is called the ‘right hook,’” Tim Bustos, executive director of the Florida Bicycle Association, told me in a phone conversation.

That is a vehicle turning right turns right on, or onto the path of, a bicycle.

Bustos, by the way, is a bit of a bicycle-collision expert. In his work for the West Florida Regional Planning Council, Pensacola, and later a California city, he’s analyzed hundreds of bicycle collisions, and bicyclist deaths.

Every year about 700 bicyclists are killed in traffic accidents nationwide. Florida accounts for almost 100 of those annual deaths, making the Sunshine State the bicyclist death capital. Bustos said there are a number of reasons for that. One is simply that Florida’s temperate climate allows

Teen organizes second annual ‘Standing Straight to Scoliosis Walk’ Anne Checkosky

TRADITION — When Miranda DeOnofrio threw out her back one week before turning 14 in 2010 neither she nor her mother, Sue, thought too much about it. That is until the Port St. Lucie residents visited a chiropractor for treatment.

It was then that Miranda learned she had severe scoliosis, a curvature of the spine. It was also then that she decided she wanted to raise awareness about the condition, which affects an estimated 6 million people in the U.S., mostly between the ages of 10 and 15, the National Scoliosis Foundation’s website says.

Searching for a project so she could receive her gold award from the Girl Scouts — she’d already gotten her bronze and silver awards and has been a scout for nine years, her mother said — Miranda founded the Standing Straight to Scoliosis Walk in 2012. This year’s walk was held Nov. 9 in Tradition and raised

$2,200, DeOnofrio said.

After the 2-mile walk around the lake, the event featured kids’ activities such as bounce houses, face painting and pony rides.

Anybody could participate in the walk and DeOnofrio said many scoliosis families came out in support this year. Donations were accepted but not required.

Returning sponsors included the St. Lucie West clothing store, Cato and Scott Citrus Management. Other sponsors were: Humana, Center State Bank and Crockett Insurance Group, DeOnofrio said.

Miranda isn’t sure she’ll hold another walk next year because it’s a lot of cost up front, her mother said. Instead, a toy drive is in the works during a breakfast with the Grinch event that’s in the planning stages, she said.

“All of the doctors I’ve heard from in the last several years talk about exercise, but not weightlifting in particular,” she said.

True was thrilled to hear about Levy’s accomplishment. She said it shows that people can continue, or even start, fulfilling lives after getting a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s.

“I am thrilled for the gentleman: it’s helping him,” True said. “I hope for everybody it works that same way.”

True said there’s no diagnostic test for Alzheimer’s. Rather, similarly to multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s is a diagnosis doctors can make after eliminating the possibility of other disorders. While it typically seems to strike after age 65, some develop the condition before then. Some call this early onset Alzheimer’s. Because of confusion with the term early stage Alzheimer’s, the preferred term is “younger onset.”

Levy said that’s all irrelevant when a doctor says you’ve got it.

“Initially you feel like you’ve been handed a death sentence,” he said. “When I got my wits to me, I decided to hit it head-on.”

At first Levy tried his hand at a self-directed exercise regimen. A few injuries later, he made his way to the city program. Levine

Steve Levy said any idea people have that power lifters are all a bunch of young guys spending the prime of their lives in gyms is bunk.

“I have guys as young as 16 and I’ve had a 67-year-old,” he said.

“As long as people want to put the effort in, age is not a factor.

My best lifters are in their 50s and 60s.”

Levine said older lifters take decades of life experience to the sport younger ones simply can’t.

In addition to setting a new world record for the deadlift at the meet, Levy set a national record for his age and weight class in the bench press: 225 pounds. He also squat pressed 330 pounds.

“I had a bicycle perfect for her size,” Wells said.

He’d find out that it was the first bike the girl would ever own.

Wells pressed and found out the woman had five children. None was getting tangible presents that year.

“I loaded up a big bag of toys for them,” he said. “I asked where they lived. They lived two blocks away from me.”

Wells was glad he was able to make a family’s Christmas. But he’d end up getting the biggest gift that day. Santa had a surprise for him. With a voice rich in emotion, he described the moment.

“The little girl said, ‘Mister, can I pray for you?’ Wells said. He paused, audibly gathering himself. “She thanked God for a man she’d never met before.”

Wells is the coordinator for the Toys for Tots in St. Lucie County. All along the Treasure Coast, Toys for Tots is looking for donations, volunteers, and collection sites.

On Saturday, Nov. 23, volunteers and employees from Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River counties will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to accept toy donations at the St. Lucie County Emer-

gency Operations Center, 15305 Midway Road, Fort Pierce.

The donation collection is more than just an exercise in good cheer. It’s also points-of-distribution practice for St. Lucie’s and Indian River’s emergency-management teams, the American Red Cross of the Treasure Coast, and Florida Department of Health agencies in Martin and St. Lucie.

Wells said every year there seems to be more families who need help giving their children a Christmas.

“I do remember us serving more than 5,000 children (last year),” he said. “That’s the number that sticks out to me.”

Wells works with the Marine Corps League’s Jack Ivy Detachment, 666, to coordinate Toys for Tots. He said there are more than 100 locations to donate toys in St. Lucie this year. Most of the collected toys will be given to families through local social-service agencies. However, for the second year, the St. Lucie County Toys for Tots is taking some direct requests for toys through the Harvest Food & Outreach Center, 2520 Orange Ave., Fort Pierce.

“Those individuals arrange a time to come pick up their toys,” Wells said.

Nationally, the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is directed by the Commander of the Marine Forces Reserve. However, the toy

Carol Hodnett, United Way of Martin County, is the coordinator for Martin. She was unavailable for comment by press time. However, Jim Vojcsik, executive director, said the local United Way has organized the toy drive for about 10 years.

“It’s about 1,200 families a year, which equates to about 3,000 children for the Toys for Tots,” he said.

Martin, which has about 160 drop-off locations, is unusual in the way it distributes donated toys. Partner agencies refer screened families to the United Way program. The United Way gives them appointments to select appropriate toys at a temporary

They aim to roll out an anti-diabetes program throughout the Treasure Coast Y’s facilities next spring. “(Type 2 diabetes) is a major health risk,” Tsarnas said. “It’s one of the major health risks in the country. Now we’re seeing it in children.”

Harvey and Tsarnas have been nurse practitioners for 16 years.

Both have worked in medicine for about 30 years. They said there’s a simple reason type 2 diabetes is ascending. They’ve been weighing people for a long time and have watched average waist sizes grow.

“It’s something like 38 percent of the population is obese,” Tsarnas said.

Not overweight. Obese. While there’s no hard line between the two, in general a person is counted as obese if his or her body-mass index exceeds 24.9 and the individual has a body fat percentage that exceed healthy norms — about 20 percent for

www.YourVoiceWeekly.com men and 25 for women. Those with a BMI between 23 and 24.9 are generally considered overweight if they exceed the healthy body fat percentages. The normal BMI is 18.5 to 22.9 Bartholomew said her husband, Chet, and she both have weight problems. She joked that it was due to his good culinary skills.

“If he was going to eat, I was going to eat,” she said. “We didn’t go out much, because we couldn’t afford to. We used (eating) for entertainment.”

She said they’d intermittently go on health and fitness starts.

Sometimes together. Other times, individually. Either way, Bartholomew said her husband and she often inadvertently undermine one another’s health and fitness motivation and progress.

Bartholomew lost 20 pounds in the first 10 weeks of the study.

And she has a motive to keep it off. Her diabetes is now manageable with just exercise and diet — no more metformin if she keeps at it.

Harvey said part of the study was giving participants discounted YMCA memberships. Part of the reason for that is because, she said, going to the Y forges

She said participants in the first study got free memberships.

“What we learned from the pilot (study) is they do better if they have some skin in the game,” Harvey said.

She said the second, current, study started with 22. Two dropped out. In addition to a weekly exercise class followed by health-maintenance instruction, participants must go to the Y on

their own, too. Harvey said the weekly class and small financial investment motivates more exercise in short order.

“Our original requirement was 120 minutes a week,” Harvey said. “Most (participants) are over 300 to 600 minutes a week.”

The researchers can track this, because the YMCA uses swipe cards that keep track of users’ times at its facilities.

Bartholomew isn’t the only one losing weight in the study.

“Our biggest loser is Gabriel,” Harvey said. “He’s 28 pounds (in 10 weeks.)”

The American Diabetes Asso-

ciation declared November as American Diabetes Month. The association reports that about 26 million Americans have diabetes.

Another 79 million are at risk for developing type 2. If current trends continue, about a third of Americans could have diabetes by 2050. In addition to being the leading cause of kidney failure, diabetes is the largest cause of new blindness among adults.

Warning signs include fatigue, sudden weight loss that can’t be attributed to lifestyle changes, an uptick in hunger or thirst, and frequent urination.

Tsarnas said diabetes is often

similar to the proverbial frog in boiling water. Frogs, according to one hypothesis, will immediately leap out if tossed into a boiling pot, but will stay until death if placed in water that’s brought to a boil. “(Type 2 diabetes patients) have no idea how bad they feel until we get their sugar under control,” she said.

“The toys are set up on tables by age group,” Vojcsik said. “The families are pre-screened. They’re given a time. A volunteer goes along with each one of the participants. They actually get to select the toys for their children. It’s a dignified way to do it.”

Recipient families are able to select one large and two small toys for each child. Additionally, they can get unlimited stocking stuffers. Along with the toys, families will receive food raised by area Boy Scouts through the recent Scouting for Food drive.

“This year, they collected 16,000 pounds of food for us,” Vojcsik said.

So, how’d Toys for Tots, one of America’s most venerated charities, get started?

Back in the ‘40s, Maj. Bill Hendricks was a Marine Corps reservist looking forward to Christmas like everyone else. His wife, Diane, made a doll and asked him to find a charity that’d give it to a girl for Christmas. He found none, so Hendricks did what any good Marine would. He organized a group of Marine Corps reservists to become Santa’s helpers.

They collected and gave out about 5,000 toys in 1947.

But mighty as Marines are in getting missions accomplished,

Hendricks was also the Director of Public Relations at Warner Brothers Studios. He used the position to get some star power behind the novel project. Few remember that Walt Disney designed the Toys for Tots logo that’s used to this day.

Marine Corps reservists used drill weekends to collect and distribute toys from 1948 to 1979.

The Total Force Program introduced in the late ‘70s reduced the drill time the Marines could commit to toy collection and distribution. By 1991, with the Secretary of Defense’s blessing, the Marine Corps officially recognized the Toys for Tots Foundation to carry on the annual work.

Collection boxes crop up around late October, and stay up until near Christmas. Wells said coordinators and volunteers appreciate anything people donate, but he had some suggestions.

“Each year we run short in the age group of the older girls, the young teens,” he said. “Both boys and girls, but we tend to run out of girls (items) before the boys.”

So, toys for young teens. Mostly for the girls, thank you.

Then there’s the little, little ones: infants and toddlers.

“We tend to never have enough for some reason,” Wells said.

So, add infants and toddlers to the need-donations list.

TREASURE COAST — The Veterans Memorial Bridge between Palm City and Stuart spans far more than the St. Lucie River’s South Fork and Okeechobee Waterway. Hundreds headed to dedication ceremonies on Sat., Nov. 16, and saw it connecting veterans and civilians, Republicans and Democrats, state and federal legislators and local-government commissioners.

“Can you think of a better Christmas present?” former Florida Senate President Ken Pruitt said to those gathered.

Pruitt is now St. Lucie’s property appraiser. Numerous speakers at the dedication largely credited his persistent efforts at the state capitol years ago for the once proposed Indian Street Bridge’s readiness to get federal funding when the Congress enacted the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, ARRA, in 2009. There was the hue and cry for “shovel ready projects.” Martin County had one, and got about $65 million to build it.

“This was the largest what we call ARRA project in the state,” James Wolfe, district secretary of the Florida Department of Transportation, said.

The Martin County Board of County Commissioners in 2011 voted to rename the project Veterans Memorial Bridge. The Veterans Council of Martin County proposed the name, along with former Martin County Veterans Service Office supervisor John Haddox. He’s now the county commissioner representing Palm City.

Pruitt said he liked the name from the first time he heard it.

“Naming the bridge for veterans who’ve (sacrificed much) could not be more appropriate,” he said.

Wolfe said future drivers will likely not realize that the bridge took decades to fund.

“It’s going to seem like it was inevitable that it was here,” he told the audience. “But, there were many times it seemed impossible.”

Planners believe the bridge will affect traffic patterns for Martin and St. Lucie commuters. Many who live in St. Lucie work in Stuart and have only a couple routes to get to and from work. Many traverse State Road 714, Martin Downs Boulevard, in Palm City to and from the Ronald Reagan Turnpike, or surface roads. But there’s the bottleneck they face: the Palm City Bridge. Crossers jostle with about 45,000 drivers a day on the 1,900-foot, four-lane bridge.

In other words, more than a four-lane bridge can reasonably handle.

Back in the ‘90s, planners feared upwards to 65,000 trips a day on the Palm City Bridge within a decade. Terry Rauth, Martin County’s deputy county engineer, explained that didn’t happen.

“It went to 44,507,” she said in a previous interview. “The reason is the 43,300 (trips) is more than a four-lane road can handle. People start finding other ways. They start avoiding it.”

And Rauth thinks she knows how drivers are avoiding the Palm City Bridge until Veterans Memorial opens.

(Interstate 95’s State Road 76 — Kanner Highway — interchange) ended up reaching capacity. We feel that happened because of a lot of people avoiding going over the Palm City Bridge.”

Rauth said much of that avoidance traffic is likely heading to and coming from the southern and western ends of Palm City, and many of those drivers will head to Martin Highway to use the 3,100-foot Veterans Memorial when it’s opened. Projections are that’ll be by Christmas. Commuters from the north will also likely alter their driving behaviors, taking pressure off the Kanner interchange and Palm City Bridge.

State Representative Gayle Harrell, R-Stuart, told the audience she vividly recalls trying to cross the Palm City Bridge back in the 1960s. Boats often interrupted

traffic on the old turn bridge.

“We sat for over an hour and a half trying to cross the wooden bridge,” she said.

Then that bridge was replaced with a two-lane arching bridge in the early 70s. Things were better, Harrell said. For a little while. By the early 1990s, the Palm City Bridge had two lanes added.

“Pretty soon, we again had to wait and wait and wait to cross that bridge,” Harrell said.

In addition to adding four lanes directly connecting Palm City and Stuart, the bridge’s 120-foot girth will sport 10-foot shoulders for pedestrians and bicyclists. Fishing will be prohibited, because of a lack of parking. The bridge gives boaters 55 feet of clearance.

George Denti, project manager, said that when the bridge opens to traffic, there’ll be no fanfare.

“A couple guys will go out there and move the barricades,” he said in an interview.

Home Instead Senior Care provides millions of hours of senior services through a network of 900 franchise offices throughout the U.S., Canada, Ireland, United Kingdom, Portugal, Switzerland, Japan, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, South Korea, Finland, Austria, Northern Italy and Puerto Rico, its website says.

Through the drive, Home Instead hopes to be able to provide gifts for 200 seniors this year.

Any extra donations will go to the day care center at the Council on Aging, Strickland said.

Meals-on Wheels volunteers identify the neediest seniors, those who have recently lost loved ones or who don’t have family nearby, Strickland said. The goal, of course, is to bring a small bit of cheer to homebound seniors who sometimes would rather treat the holidays as just another day, she said.

There are several ways to donate. Inside both Butterfield’s Pharmacies — the other location is in Port St. Lucie on St. Lucie West Boulevard — patrons will find trees with ornaments on them that provide gift suggestions. Just pick an ornament

There will also be collection jars located inside the pharmacies for those who would rather make monetary donations. Finally, there will be collection bins at six Seacoast National Bank branches in Port St. Lucie and Fort Pierce.

Items most wanted this year include body lotion, and in particular, scent-free Eucerin, Strickland said.

I personally don’t do oysters.

Never have been able to stomach them, since childhood.

But I do research. Apparently, oyster lovers should know that Wellfleet oysters, for example, grow in cold waters and taste much like what they consume, which is healthy, clean-water phytoplankton. The website, wellfleetoysterfestival.com, says “wellfleet oysters tend to be long and strong-shelled. Experienced tasters know that they are plump and clean with a distinctively good balance of creamy sweetness and brine.” “And high salinity. The salinity in Wellfleet Harbor is also relatively high (28 parts per thousand) compared to the more brackish waters of, for example, upper Chesapeake Bay. Experienced tasters find that oysters that grow in saltier waters tend to have a cleaner, sharper flavor.”

And the food kept coming: The next item was My Valentine, a sushi dish ($24) that proprietor John Spoto confessed he’s eaten for dinner every night since he introduced it to his restaurant when he opened the Stuart location, formerly Dockside, in June. I’m not a big sushi fan, either – more a meat-and-potatoes girl – but I did indulge this night in a couple pieces – sushi-grade tuna, apples, oranges, and spiced mayonnaise served on a plate with more apples, orange slices, avocado, and masago, the orange-colored eggs of capelin fish native to the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, prepared

by Chef Roy. At this point, Amedeo was bringing additional items to the table: lemon slices, a clean dish, and hot towels, for us to cleanse our hands between dishes. I haven’t had such personal attention since the one and only time I’ve flown first-class. Very nice touch …

After cleansing our hands, Amedeo brought us a dish of Thai mussels, served with coconut milk, lemongrass and curry

– tender and tasty. In the meantime, the 10 or so managers on duty (OK, maybe it just seemed like 10) came by to check on us.

Somewhere in the middle of all this, Amedeo brought us bouillabaisse, a Spanish seafood-stew favorite of lobster, clams, and fresh fish of the day, in a tomato-based broth.

The finale was a surf-and-turf dish: macadamia nut-encrusted mahi mahi and a 7-ounce cut of ribeye steak, served with potatoes au gratin and my very favorite vegetable in the world – asparagus, cooked exactly as it’s supposed to be: al dente, so you

ST. LUCIE WEST — JD Lookadoo has a passion and a mission. Music is passion. His mission is to spread the word that early detection of cancer saves lives.

Lookadoo, who lives in St. Lucie West, moved to Florida from North Carolina in 1957.

“We were here before Port St. Lucie was here,” he said.

“There wasn’t a lot here back in those days.

Lookadoo loved music but didn’t make it his career.

“My first love was music, but my father gave me some good advice, to get a degree and an education,” he said. “I followed his advice and worked in the family’s medical lab for 30 years.”

Turkey distribution begins Monday

by Treasure Coast Food Bank St. LUCIE COUNTY — Treasure Coast Food Bank will begin distributing turkeys on Monday between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. to its partner agencies so those in need can share in a traditional Thanksgiving meal.

The public is welcome to join as the turkeys and other food goes out from the warehouse at 401 Angle Road, Fort Pierce.

“Now I’m doing country. Country music is the music of our country. It’s working class people’s music. Younger people are gravitating toward it because it has more of a rock feel.”

While he was working, Lookadoo would occasionally sit in with a band.

“I was more of a side man,” he said. “It was very casual. I was always the guy in the background playing the guitar. I want to be the front man and learn to sing, learn the chords and do the show.”

Music is only one part of the show Lookadoo hopes to create.

Lookadoo got degrees in microbiology and biochemistry. He ran the family business, Lookadoo Skyline Laboratories, until it was sold a few years ago.

“In the last three years, I decided to go back to music,” he said. “I wanted to pursue what I love and not retire. It’s not a business to do music. I love music.”

Lookadoo was raised on the Beatles but in the last few years, he’s become a country fan.

“I saw Keith Urban play and became a country fan,” he said.

JD Lookadoo His science background and personal experience losing his mother to cancer have given him another focus.

“I’m currently working on putting together a show that incorporates music and slides in some education about cancer prevention,” he said.

“That’s another passion. Ladies need to have mammograms and female tests and men prostate tests. Cancer is something we need to take responsibility for ending. That can only be through education.”

Lookadoo is a supporter of Stand Up to Cancer, an organization started by Katie Couric, who lost her husband and sister to cancer.

“Research is often done in top secret,” Lookadoo said. “If researchers learn something, they keep it under lock and key.

Stand Up to Cancer donates 100 percent to collaborative researchers who agree to publish and share findings. Through that process, we’ll find a cure.”

It’s a little difficult to see how a cancer prevention message mixes with light entertainment, and Lookadoo acknowledged that clubs may be not be his best venue. He is doing concerts at fundraisers, including a recent one for Caring Fields Animal Sanctuary, and is look-

ing into other avenues to spread his message and music.

A march through downtown Fort Pierce will be followed by a candlelight vigil and speak-out of victims of sexual violence sharing their stories. The event is free, open to the public, and will be incredibly illuminating.

One in every three women is the victim of a sexual assault, often at the hands of someone she knows and loves. Whether it is in the form of incest, date-rape, intimate partner violence, or sexual assault by a stranger, without the community’s awareness, it will continue to happen.

“She might be your sister, your daughter, your niece, or even you. She’s a victim of a crime we don’t speak about comfortably — and she’s probably suffering in a silence that could ruin her life,” says Mindi Fetterman, the event’s organizer and herself a victim.

“It’s important that victims break the silence and know that there are local resources that she — or he — can turn to,” adds Mindi.

FORT PIERCE — The musical “Hello, Dolly!” is a classic. It’s hard to remember a time when it was wasn’t around, but when it debuted in 1964, everyone wasn’t a fan. The show won 10 Tony awards, but unbelievably, some critics found the Jerry Herman music and lyrics boring.

The producer of this (national) tour called me about playing Dolly for the 50th anniversary tour. I had played it a few times in regional theater.”

Struthers said that roles in the theater and movies for women over 40 are still few and far between.

“The arts are mostly run by men,” she said. “There is one role for a woman for every four or five roles for men. A woman has to be young and beautiful. When you’re my age, there are slim pickings. Now I play the lead in an American theater classic. The role of Dolly is top-drawer. It comes from Thornton Wilder’s ‘The Matchmaker.’

I’m saying his words and singing Jerry Herman’s songs. I have monologues, seven songs and gorgeous costumes and hats made for me. It’s a dream. I feel like such a beautiful lady every night. It’s pretty much a flawless musical and I pour my heart into it.”

“Both were fantastic,” she said.

“I also saw Dorothy Loudon as Miss Hannigan in ‘Annie.’ It was obvious the joy they felt in playing the roles. They were having the times of their lives. It’s contagious and the audience catches the bug. Everyone working on the show is talented and we are all seeing Amerce and having a blast.

“I happen to be the oldest one on the tour and the crew and the musicians call me ‘Mama.’ The kids are thrilled to be spending Thanksgiving in Florida.

As she has gotten older, Struthers has become philosophical.

“On the tour, we‘re sitting on the bus eight hours a day,” she said. “It’s not enjoyable. I reorganized my thinking. I’m doing a performance for free and I’m being paid a tidy sum to ride the bus.”

ST LUCIE WEST — It’s Teddy Bear Time at the Community Music School of Tradition when more than 50 string students and orchestras will present a “Family Holiday Concert and Teddy Bear Show” at the Port St. Lucie Community Center, 2195 S.E. Airoso Blvd in Port St. Lucie, on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 3 p.m. Doors will open to the public at 2:30 p.m.

The Festival Concert and Show is free, but donations are appreciated at the doors to help the music school’s “Instrument and Scholarship Fund” from which over half of the music school’s students receive full and partial scholarships to study string lessons and receive free string instruments under the “Float Scholarship Program.”

The audience is asked to bring their favorite Teddy Bear to enjoy

the Concert of Classical, Carol and Holiday Music. Featured will be “Trepak” and “Waltz of the Flowers” from ‘The Nutcracker’; “The Teddy Bears Picnic”; “The Radetzky March”; “The Little Drummer Boy”;“Hava Nagila”; “Greensleeves” featuring Jillian Alberto, 9-year-old child violin prodigy as well as many holiday popular tunes and carol medleys.

Mallory Hendrickson will dance an Irish step dance with the school’s artist “English Chamber Orchestra” and the program will end with George Frederick Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus.”

If one does not have a teddy bear, the orchestra parents will be selling teddy bears for $2 at the Teddy Bear Shop before the Concert. The School’s founding director/owner Diane Hope Float, will, also, be bringing her teddy

“It will be a very special holiday event,” says Float, “as teddy bears are a beloved toy of childhood.” We expect all the teddy bears to go home with their owners and come back again for next year’s festival. However, if one wants to donate their teddy bear to needy children, a teddy bear donation box will be in the lobby after the festivities.

“We hope to make this an annual event,” she says. “It is a great kick-off to the holiday season for the whole community.”

Other family concerts in the music school’s “FAMILY 2013-2014 CONCERT SERIES” are: • St. Patrick’s Celebration Gala Concert, Sunday, March 16th at 3 p.m. at the Port St. Lucie Community Center; “Spring Music from the Movies Festival Concert”, Sunday, May 18 at 3:30 p.m. at St. Bernadette Church.

Student Recitals will be held throughout the winter and spring terms in the community.
