PORT ST. LUCIE — Rather than open Thanksgiving Day to cash in on added profits, many local stores are going to be closed to stay true to holiday tradition. Black Friday has grown into an American holiday staple, consistently being the most shopped day of the year, with 92.1 million scouring shelves and enduring long lines to get a deal last year, according to the National Retail Federation. Thanksgiving Day shoppers lagged a bit behind, with 44.8 million trading turkey time for sale city. The average shopper last year spent $407 over the course of Thanksgiving weekend, but some business owners don’t care about cashing in by opening Thursday. Kmart is likely opening the earliest, at 6 a.m. Thanksgiving morning. It’s more common to see small business owners stay closed on holidays, though. “We’ll be at home, eating turkey and getting fat.
