PORT ST. LUCIE — Rather than open Thanksgiving Day to cash in on added profits, many local stores are going to be closed to stay true to holiday tradition. Black Friday has grown into an American holiday staple, consistently being the most shopped day of the year, with 92.1 million scouring shelves and enduring long lines to get a deal last year, according to the National Retail Federation. Thanksgiving Day shoppers lagged a bit behind, with 44.8 million trading turkey time for sale city. The average shopper last year spent $407 over the course of Thanksgiving weekend, but some business owners don’t care about cashing in by opening Thursday. Kmart is likely opening the earliest, at 6 a.m. Thanksgiving morning. It’s more common to see small business owners stay closed on holidays, though. “We’ll be at home, eating turkey and getting fat. I believe in celebrating Thanksgiving,” Steve Klaassen, owner of Colorado

Astronomer has down-to-earth approach to the heavens Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Jon Bell, associate professor of astronomy and director of the Hallstrom Planetarium at Indian River State College, always knew he wanted to teach science. He just didn’t know, quite literally, what direction he would take. Growing up near the Finger Lakes in upstate New York, he attended the State University of New York at Plattsburgh and received a B.S. in earth science. “I think I just had the feeling I wanted physical science,” he said. “I thought I’d like to teach geology and earth science. I didn’t anticipate I’d end up working at a planetarium at Plattsburgh. As part of the Space Race in the 1950s and 1960s, funding was available to schools to purchase planetariums to get students interested in space. “The State University of New York system purchased about a dozen,” Bell said. “When they got the physical plant, the faculty didn’t know how to run them. Some shut down. A faculty member at Plattsburgh took the time to let students learn to operate it. That made all the difference. “It was great fun to teach astronomy in a planetarium setting, and I looked upward. I would have made a really good paleontologist and I dearly loved the subject, but astronomy was a higher calling.” Bell went on to get a master’s degree in science education from Columbia University. He also spent two years as scientific assistant at the renowned Hayden Planetarium in New York. He be-
came director of the Hallstrom in 1993, just after it was built, and is the only director the facility has known. In 1995, Bell began the popular “Skywatch” program on WQCS, the local National Public Radio station. Getting across a lot of information in such a short time has been a challenge. “With the tag line in and out, I only have 47 seconds,” Bell said. “It’s hard to say something useful in 47 seconds, but it taught me to edit. Sometimes I have a cliffhanger and say, ‘Stay tuned tomorrow.’ One of my favorite phrases is, ‘as a matter of fact,’ but I don’t use it because it chews up three seconds.” Bell tries to include upcoming events at the Hallstrom as well as interesting information in the “Skywatch” broadcasts, but he knows that some things just get lost in the 47 seconds. Transcripts of the programs, heard on WQCS 88.9 FM Monday-Friday at 7:20 a.m. and 12:59 p.m., are available on the planetarium website and are archived. Bell is also known as “The Singing Astronomer.” His “Astronomer’s Songbook” is said to be the most comprehensive collection of space and astronomy-related songs, many written by him. He presents musical “Space Songs” programs to planetarium visitors. He has also served as the singing master of ceremonies for the Treasure Coast Science Fair awards. “I wanted to be the dancing astronomer, but I’m not a very good dancer,” he said “I’m working up a new songbook for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Songs are a great way to get students interested. I write a
lot of my own songs, with familiar tunes and new words.” Among some of his cringe-worthy creations are “Happy Snails to You,” “Fungi isn’t Fun,” and, with a tip of the hat to the Mamas & the Papas, “Mycologenia Dreaming,” a salute to mushrooms. Bell’s courses are not required for a degree and students often take them as electives to fill the science requirement. For those planning to teach science, he said there is more than astronomy. ‘They cover astronomy and a little geology and the processes of science: What’s a law, what’s a theory, what are inductive and deductive reasoning. You have a certain faith that science will help you understand the universe, but as Plato said, there are limitations. I don’t see inherent conflicts between people of faith and science. “The universe is a grand, wonderful, amazing creation. For people who come in and want to find out more, there are layers to strip from the names of stars and patterns to the mythologies behind them and to the cultural values. There is so much richness in the cultures of the people who told the stories that we can connect with. Then there are modern stories, like black holes, where you can look back in time to when the universe was young. It’s constantly fascinating. Curiosity is in our makeup. We all want to know.” While Bell urges visitors to come to the planetarium, he also suggests that people just look upward. “Go out and count the stars and make up your own constellations,” he said. “Asterism is a
John Bell star form that’s made up. The Big Dipper is not a constellation, but it’s easy to recognize and easy to see. It’s an asterism. Calling starts by names makes them like old friends. They’ll always be there. I’m here to pass that along. The other joy is working with college students. It never gets old.” The Hallstrom Planetarium is located at 3209 Virginia Ave., Fort Pierce. “Star of Wonder,” a search for the star that may have guided the Magi, will be presented Dec. 5-6 and 12-13. Tickets are $3. On Dec. 13,”Yuletide,” a concert ‘under the stars,” will feature songs of the holiday season with live electronic music of composer Jonn Serrie. For tickets, call the box office at 1-(800) 220-9915. For more information about the Hallstrom Planetarium, visit the website, www.irsc.edu.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — St. Lucie County tourism revenue was boosted 16 percent since last year, with revenues being the highest they’ve been since hurricanes Frances and Jeanne hit the Treasure Coast 10 years ago, according to a press release from the St. Lucie County Tourism & Venues Office. Since last year, tourists have spent over $3 million on bed taxes, a fee visitors pay on stays less than six months, figures released by the office show. Bed tax revenues hit a low point in 2009, at about $2 million, St. Lucie County Tourism & Venues manager Charlotte Bireley said. “Since ‘09, revenues increased 53 percent. That in of itself is a really strong indicator of how we’ve bounced back from tourism,” Bireley said. “The county’s average daily rate (ADR) for hotels has increased significantly over the last couple of years. This is a large reason why our tourist tax revenues have increased and it’s a great indicator that visiting our area is in more demand,” she said. One of the reasons more people have been visiting is due to recognition Port St. Lucie and Fort Pierce are receiving. Forbes, com ranked Port St. Lucie as one of its top 25 retirement destinations. Colorado Pawn & Jewelry will be open on Black Friday, though, to cash in on a smaller piece of the profit pie. Klaassen said his store typically notices sales double each year on Black Friday. “From 9 a.m. until noon we’ll have 35 percent off the whole store. We’ve already got low prices so we don’t do the whole 70 percent off thing,” Klaassen said. GNC, with two locations in Port St. Lucie and another in Stuart and Palm City, will also be closed Thanksgiving Day. Owner Al Paetzig said he cares about his employees having a special day with family. “We’re trying to keep it a family day for our employees. I think it’s very important, and it’s getting lost in today’s business,” Paetzig said. “It’s the ethical and right thing to do.” It’s not just local business owners, though. Many national chain stores are shutting their doors until Black Friday. According to lists compiled by the Wall Street Journal and Mental Floss, large chain stores with branches in St. Lucie County including, Burlington Coat Factory, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Publix and Home Depot will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. Each of those will be opening bright and early the next day, of course. With large chains garnering most shoppers each year with eye-catching deals, St. Lucie

Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee chairwoman Michelle MacNichol said. “Horseback riding on the beach. Fort Pierce is one of three places in the state to offer horseback riding on the beach,” MacNichol said. While the area has much to offer tourists, MacNichol said the area can’t speak for itself, so the tourism committee holds courses at Indian River State College to help get the message out. The IRSC classes are aimed toward those in the service industry to teach them what attractions the area has, so they can recommend to tourists things to do. “One thing we find is that locals don’t even know what there is to do in the county,” she said. “One of the worst things you can do is tell people there’s nothing to do here and tell them to go to Palm Beach, Orlando or Miami.”
received a top retirement distinction from Bloomberg Businessweek. In August, USA Today named Fort Pierce as having one of the most idyllic, historic main streets. “Cities within the county have received some great publicity,” Bireley said. “That has generated a lot of interest in our area. When people hear that, they want to come visit and see it for themselves … that’s been a big reason.” Bireley said visitors tell her that fishing in Fort Pierce and golfing at PGA Village are activities that have drawn them to the area. “PGA is a huge economic driver for us,” she said. The St. Lucie Mets, beachfront horseback riding, motorized kayak riding and the National Navy SEAL Museum in Fort Pierce are also big draws, St. Lucie County

vices director Mark Satterlee said. “Staff finds the report seriously lacking in specific information in St. Lucie County that is reflected in the 25 pages of comments that we have prepared. I think it’s consistent with the other communities up and down the Treasure Coast,” he said. Martin and Indian River county commissions approved similar resolutions last week, as well. Satterlee said the board universally expressed frustration with the Federal Rail Administration’s process behind drafting their report. “St. Lucie County appears to receive many impacts from the project and no benefits,” he said. Those impacts were outlined in the 25-page document. “While it appears that some issues did receive a more substantive review — the environmental and navigation issues, in particular — close analysis reveals that specific impacts to St. Lucie County are simply not addressed,” it reads. Those who wrote the draft environmental impact statement didn’t do their due diligence, as the county’s complaints point out that Taylor and Moore Creeks

were mislabeled, and the report also had an outdated table that shows I-95 as four to six lanes in St. Lucie County, though it’s six and eight lanes in most of the county. Also of concern is the lack of a substantial study, ensuring local businesses wouldn’t be harmed economically by road closings. The county comments say that a stop in Fort Pierce would likely mitigate many of the standing concerns, however. At the meeting, Commissioner Chris Dzadovsky asked county attorney Dan McIntyre if it would be worth the county’s while to sue All Aboard Florida for the adverse impacts the increased track traffic would cause. “This is, for the most part, interstate commerce. This is goods and services going through,” McIntyre said. “Really, as a local government, you can’t really regulate that reasonably or at all. I think our options are somewhat limited.” Dzadovsky said property owners may want to consider joining together in a class-action lawsuit, however. Residents can still submit their concerns to county staff, or they can send a letter or email to the Federal Rail Administration.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The dispute between Phil Yacucci and Stephen Smith looks to be far from over. Stephen Smith, a Ticket Clinic attorney, filed a lawsuit against the man who beat him in the August primary for an alleged physical and verbal altercation that occurred outside the Port St. Community Center during early voting Aug. 22. No one was arrested after police investigated the incident, which the complaint — filed in St. Lucie County Court — says Smith was “in fear of imminent and immediate harm. “Yacucci intentionally placed his hands on the elbows of Smith … as he yelled that he was going to kill Smith,” the complaint reads. Yacucci has long denied any physical confrontations with Smith, though admitting the two had some heated conversations in the past. During the commu-

TREASURE COAST — Florida’s unemployment is low as it’s been since June 2008. In October, the state’s seasonally adjusted, non-agricultural unemployment rate hit the 6 percent threshold. The nation was at 5.5 percent. The Department of Economic Opportunity released its October employment report on Friday, Nov. 21. “It’s a big deal that we’re finally in the sixes as a region,” Odaly Victorio, communications coordinator for CareerSource Research Coast, said. “That’s fantastic.” While most of the CareerSource Region 20 — Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee and St. Lucie counties — had higher than average unemployment rates than the rest of the state, Martin had a not seasonally adjusted rate of 6 percent, the lowest in the region. Typically the not seasonally adjusted rate is slightly lower than the seasonally adjusted rate. Martin shed .3 percent of its unemployment rate in the same time Florida did, from September to October. St. Lucie made better gains: a .8 percent drop in a month, from 7.9 percent not seasonally adjusted in September to 7.1 percent in October. Victorio noted part of the Treasure Coast’s job gains from September to October are attributable to normal economic cycles. “It is part of the seasonality,” she said. “We go up in the summer months, and (September to
October) we go the other direction.” Victorio added, “We’re in the sixes finally, but I would feel better if we were in the sixes in August.” Last year, the CareerSource region had a not seasonally adjusted October unemployment rate of 8.7 percent. This year it was 6.8 percent. There is a psychological boost for the state getting back to the 6 percent unemployment rate. In the United States, real gross domestic product, GDP, started contracting in the third quarter of 2008, what’s generally counted as the start of the Great Recession and sluggish recovery in America. Florida’s unemployment had been climbing steadily from 2006 to 2008. When it hit 6 percent in June that year, unemployment rapidly accelerated, nearly doubling, by October of 2009. Some economists have attributed dropping unemployment numbers in the Sunshine State not just to an improving jobs market, but to lower labor participation rates. That is discouraged workers not seeking jobs, thus not being counted in unemployment reports. The Port St. Lucie Metropolitan Statistical Area, MSA, — St. Lucie and Martin counties — dropped from 7.3 percent not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in September to 6.7 percent in October. The MSA had almost 197,000 workers. About 13.200 were looking for jobs. The MSA had the fifth highest unemployment rate in the state. The Palm Coast MSA

took the unenvied top spot with an 8.2 percent not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate. The Sebastian-Vero Beach MSA, which is in the CareerSource Research Coast region, had the state’s second highest rate, 7 percent. St. Lucie had the 11th highest unemployment rate among the state’s counties. Martin was at 27. There are 67 counties in Florida. “There’re still a lot of people out there looking for work,” Victorio said. “I see people moving, getting into jobs, getting into new jobs.” However, she said job fairs are very noticeably attracting fewer and fewer workers. Victorio said there’s hard and soft evidence that employed workers are getting better average pay, too. She said the proliferation of help-wanted signs and overall good economic news seems to have made the local labor force less willing to accept lower-than-expected wages. “You have a workforce that did what they had to do in the recession, but we’re not there anymore and they know it,” she said. Victorio that it tired of workers departing. “They decided it was cheaper to give everybody a raise, even though they didn’t ask for one, then to keep paying for training,” she said. The unemployment rate is calculated using a variety of methods. Among them are telephone interviews with workers. Those that report not having jobs and looking for employment in the previous 30 days are counted as unemployed. Discouraged workers — those who are able to work and want jobs, but have not sought employment in the previous 30 days — are not counted in the unemployment figure. Many call this “shadow unemployment,” and it’s inherently difficult to track due to variations for why people don’t seek jobs.

LAWSUIT from page A9 clinic are subject to very serious penalties from the Florida bar. I have filed the complaints against them as I said I would. This is nothing more than nuisance lawsuit that will be dismissed,” Yacucci said. “I really don’t have the time or the desire to deal with Mr. Smith or those who push his buttons any longer.” Smith is also seeking defamation damages from an Aug. 23 ABC interview in which Yacucci said Smith should not be a lawyer and was a disgrace as a candidate, the complaint shows.
The suit also seeks to prevent Yacucci from getting back his $10,000 bond for an injunction against Smith and Concerned Citizens for Judicial Fairness that temporarily shut down a website that bashed Yacucci for past mistakes. The decision was overturned, however, in West Palm Beach because the injunction violated the First Amendment. “The complaint, and the matters set forth therein speak for themselves,” Smith’s lawyer, Louis Arslanian said. “This conduct, and these statements, especially from a judge, cannot be tolerated,” he said.

Trouble hearing? Head to Mutter’s STAFF WRITER
bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE WEST — With such a high hearing loss prevalence in America, it may be time to get a checkup. According to the Better Hearing Institute, about 30 percent of those 60 and older experience some sort of hearing loss, and the problem is rising among kids. An American Academy of Pediatrics study published in August showed hearing loss problems for kids rose 15 percent from 2001 to 2011. Without getting proper care in the early stages of hearing loss, the problem only escalates, Joe Mutter, owner of Mutter’s Precision Hearing Center along St. Lucie West Boulevard. “Untreated hearing loss is an epidemic in the U.S.,” Mutter said. Mutter encourages others to do as Carmela Buhrman did and schedule a free appointment at his office. Buhrman said she noticed her
hearing slowly deteriorated and asked a friend what she should do. “She said ‘Why don’t you try my guy?’” Buhrman got outfitted with hearing aids and said she feels like she’s living in a new world. “I didn’t know it was a noisy world out there. I hear things I’ve never heard before,” she said. “When I go out to get my newspaper, I hear the birds singing. I hear the clock on my wall … I can hear in church now. That’s big for me.” Mutter exclusively uses hearing aids from Starkey Hearing Aids, the only American-owned and operated hearing aid company, Mutter said. Mutter opened his business in 2002 after a 24-year long law enforcement career. He said it was time to get out and pursue his vision of the American dream — owning his own business. Mutter’s brother-in-law had a hearing center in Stuart, so Mutter spent some

time toward the end of his law enforcement career shadowing him, learning the ins and outs of the business. By the time he retired from the force, he chose to go to school to open his own practice to continue helping people with his work. About 12 years later, he has over 3,000 clients. One of the big things Mutter wants people to understand is that he works to do the right thing and be up front with people about what he can’t do as a hearing specialist, especially considering they may soon be paying thousands of dollars to treat their hearing. “The feedback I get back from my clients is ‘Well, I went to the
other place, and they told me that I’d hear like I was 20 again.’ Well, that’s not true. You’re going to hear significantly better … To do the right thing, I tell them ‘you’re going to hear significantly better, but it’s going to take some work to get there. “That’s part of doing the right thing. Taking the time to make sure that folks understand the level of technology and to understand where their hearing is at.” Mutter is the only specialist at his office because he says he wants to guarantee people are getting quality and service, rather than risk someone having a bad experience. “I’ve been a part of this community since 1985. I’m not here to just show up and get a paycheck.”

Attendees had the opportunity to bid on their favorite silent auction items throughout the room, with the live auction of mosaics created by students and renowned local artist Anita Prentice culminating the night. Even with a night full of excitement, the real reason everyone was in attendance was not lost. lives of students. “The grants that the education foundation provides go far beyond the classroom. And it reaches far beyond just the lives of the students and teachers involved and often touches families as well. There have been many cases where a student involvement in a grant opportunity has led to increased family involvement and increase self-confidence and pride,” said Barajas. Funds raised during the night will support student scholarships, teacher grants, classroom adoptions, and recognition programs for students and employees. This year the Education Foundation was able to fund over $120,000 in grants throughout the school district with the help of matching grant funds and its community partners. Established in 1990 as a nonprofit organization, the St. Lucie County Education Foundation was organized to provide direct support to the students and teachers through programs not supported by tax revenue. The foundation advances K-12 public education in St. Lucie County public schools by increasing the capacity and resources of the district through grants, student scholarships, facilitating project funding, and classroom adoptions. Two additional plans — the Space Coast and Lauderdale — offer Parade of Homes award-winning designs and bring the total number of available floor plans to 14 at Vitalia. Vitalia’s three home collections were designed for specific homesites in picturesque neighborhoods, many overlooking nature preserves and lakes. Each home design offers two architectural elevations, covered front porches, lanais and two-car garages. Options allow homebuyers to extend lanais or add golf cart garages, tray ceilings, and second owner’s suites. Homes in Vitalia are priced from the low $190,000s and are located just 14 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Three model homes are currently open for viewing. Vitalia offers 452 acres punctuated by nature preserves and lakes plus winding sidewalks, bicycle and golf cart paths leading to the Captiva Club, the private lakefront amenity center designed with resident input. The Captiva Club also offers a cyber café, demonstration kitchen and creative studio rooms. Outdoor facilities include pickleball and bocce courts, tennis courts, a lakeside pavilion, a Grand Event Lawn with fire pits, and a golf putting green, now under construction. Treasure Coast Hospice celebrates the holiday season with a tree of life ceremony FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
TREASURE COAST — Treasure Coast Hospice will celebrate the holiday season with its Tree of Life ceremony in Fort Pierce on Tuesday, Dec. 2, in Stuart on Wednesday, Dec. 10, and in Tradition on Dec. 12 all Tree of Life ceremonies are from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. The annual tree lightings are held in partnership with the City of Fort Pierce, City of Stuart and town of Tradition. Locations are as follows: Fort Pierce: Downtown Gazebo at the corner of Avenue A/Indian River Drive. Stuart: Downtown Gazebo at 100 E. Ocean Ave. Tradition: Gazebo on the Lake, Southwest Meeting Street. The ceremonies will include a message of hope from Treasure Coast Hospice and musical performances. This year’s event will
include the sale of a porcelain ornament keepsake with the words “Cherish the Memories” engraved on it for a $15 donation. The holidays can pose a challenge for people who have experienced the loss of a loved one. Traditionally a time of joy and laughter, the holiday season brings mixed emotions, feelings of stress and loneliness. At all of the Tree of Life ceremonies, guests may acknowledge their loss by writing the names of their loved ones on a special memory tag to place on the decorated tree. If guests are unable to attend the ceremony, they may pick up tags at the Mayes Center for Hope or the Thomas Counseling Center and hang them on the tree at their convenience. The trees will be displayed in the downtown gazebos until Dec. 31 (Tradition tree will only be displayed for that evening). For more information, visit www. tchospice.org/tree.

“Peggy cared for our mom at home during a long illness so Mom could be with the family she loved. But in the final months when Mom’s condition got worse, her doctor recommended Treasure Coast Hospice. They provided expert care for Mom, supported our caregiving and guided the whole family. This was the relief we needed to enjoy time with Mom.”
