PORT ST. LUCIE — Nine months after his sudden release from position as city manager, the ghost of Greg Oravec has returned to haunt the Port St. Lucie City Council. On Monday, three council members, including the mayor, were charged with both criminal and civil infractions for violating the state’s open records law, known as Sunshine Law, in connection with Oravec’s February release, documents from the state attorney’s office state. Councilman Ron Bowen was charged with a second-degree misdemeanor for attending a meeting of the council on Feb. 2 through an intermediary, city attorney Roger Orr, during which two or more members of the council took official action about offering Oravec a severance package, state attorney Bruce Colton said. Bowen, who will be arraigned on Dec. 4, faces up to 60 days in jail and/or a fine of up to $500. He was arrested on Nov. 19 and then re-
leased. Mayor JoAnn Faiella was charged with two civil infractions. The first for deleting text messages and a second for communicating through Orr, documents state. CounCouncilman Ron Bowen cilwoman Shannon Martin was charged with a civil infraction for destroying text messages. Each infraction carries a penalty of a fine of up to

TRADITION — The Digital Domain saga continues. Just last week, a cash deal for $14 million fell through, city officials said. “I think it fell through because
we refused to do an extension,” interim city manager Jeff Bremer said. “We refused to do an extension without putting up some money at this point in time.” The buyer, businessman Richard Friedberg, wanted a fourmonth extension, Bremer said.

Student baseball player honored by big league hero and community Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer
nrodriguez@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE WEST — During his short time on Earth and behind home plate, Lincoln Park Academy catcher, Christian Medina, 16, left a lasting legacy of love, sportsmanship and professionalism, all of the fundamentals that embody a distinguished baseball player. In death, Christian, who died on Oct. 27 from injuries he sustained during an Oct. 23 car accident while enroute to school, managed to touch not only the Treasure Coast, but his idol and one of baseball’s greats, New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter. Thanks to the effort of local philanthropist and Lake Charles resident, Scott Van Duzer, the Yankees slugger signed the jersey Christian donned during his last game. Christian’s mother, Madeline Medina of Port St. Lucie, was touched by the gesture.
“Oh my God, that was his idol of idols,” Medina said. “He even named his dog Jeter.” “He basically wanted the attitude that Jeter had. That great sportsmanship, helping people. Derek Jeter was a very big influence on my son,” Medina said. “I wrote him a letter thanking him because he made my son become something very special. He tried to follow the steps of him. He wanted to be a baseball player. He played hard. My son never gave up.” Van Duzer, who was inundated with calls from the community asking how it could help Christian’s family, decided to hold a fundraiser on Dec. 4 to help the Medinas and the Greens, the family of Christian’s twin passengers, Timothy and Peter, 15, who were injured in the crash. Van Duzer, head of the Van Duzer Foundation, said his first meeting with Madeline Medina at Photo courtesy of the Van Duzer Foundation his Big Apple Pizza & Pasta shop in Fort Pierce spurred him to do Family members, friends and teammates will come out to suport the event hosted by the Van Duzer Foundation to assist the Medina and Green families. Christian Medina, 16, was killed in a car crash on Orange Avenue in Fort Pierce in October.

COKE from page A1 addiction. An apologetic Radel said his team will take over his responsibilities in his absence. Radel, who said he has no plans to resign, will presumably crusade on for clean water once he has recovered. “I hope like family, Southwest Florida can forgive me for this. I’ve let them down, but I do believe in faith, forgiveness and redemption and I hope to come out of this a stronger man, a better man for all of you,” Radel said during a press conference held in Southwest Florida on Nov. 20. In a written statement released the day before his court appearance, Radel, who is married with a toddler son, said he hopes to one day restore his position as a role model. “This unfortunate event does have a positive side. It offers me an opportunity to seek treatment and counseling,” Radel said. “I know I have a problem and will do whatever is necessary to overcome it, hopefully setting an example for others struggling with this disease. Please keep my family in your prayers.” Earlier this year, Radel voted in favor of the final version of the House-passed farm bill that included a measure to allow states to drug test food stamp recipients.

“This unfortunate event does have a positive side. It offers me an opportunity to seek treatment and counseling.” -U.S. Rep. Trey Radel, R-Fort Myers Court documents reveal an investigation into Radel’s drug activity began in the fall after authorities were notified by “confidential sources and informants.” On several occasions, Radel purchased, possessed and used cocaine, a statement of offense states. “The agents learned that the defendant would purchase cocaine for his personal use and also, on occasion, share it with others,” documents state. Radel was arrested on Oct. 29 in Washington, D.C., after he agreed to purchase 3.5 grams of cocaine for $250 from an undercover officer who was accompanied by an acquaintance of Radel. Radel agreed to purchase the drugs in the undercover officer’s car outside of a Washington restaurant. Had he been arrested and charged in Florida where cocaine possession is a third degree felony, Radel would have faced a potential five-year prison sentence, a $5,000 fine and lost his right to vote. “After the undercover police officer and the defendant completed
this transaction and got out of the undercover police officer’s vehicle, federal agents approached the defendant,” court documents state. “The defendant dropped the cocaine to the street, where it was recovered by the agents.” During an interview with federal agents at his Washington apartment that night, Radel admitted to the purchase and surrendered a vial of cocaine he had in his residence, documents state. Radel’s arrest and sentencing comes on the heels of an Oct. 3 congressional briefing he co-hosted with Murphy on the Lake Okeechobee discharge-ravaged Indian River Lagoon. The meeting was attended by more than 20 members of Congress, including U.S. House of Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. Radel and Murphy also co-authored a letter to President Barack Obama, inviting the president to tour the deteriorating waterways on both of Florida’s coasts. Murphy spokeswoman, Erin Moffet Hale, said the congress-
Trey Radel man hasn’t spoken to Radel regarding the issue. “This is a matter for Congressman Radel, his family and the courts,” she said. Before taking office last year, Radel, a freshman member of Congress, worked as a television anchor and talk show host. He also founded the nonprofit organization, U.S. Forces Fund, which aides wounded soldiers and veterans. Radel represents Florida’s 19th congressional district, a coastal area of Southwest Florida including Fort Myers, Naples, Cape Coral, Bonita Springs and Marco Island.

Berger suggested legal fees be reimbursed if Bowen is cleared. City taxpayers should not be taxed for the lengthy investigation and also the defense, Berger added. During a previous Your Voice News & Views interview, Bowen denied breaking any Sunshine Laws. From the dais, Bowen said his defense lawyer advised him not to speak about the charge. “Oh no. Never. We’ve had three or four lectures by Councilwoman Berger,” Bowen said, adding council members never conversed about their distaste or satisfaction of Oravec. “I’m very aware of Sunshine Laws, it’s been beaten into my head.” After the meeting, Martin said she’s looking forward to putting the ordeal behind her. “I’m taking full responsibility for it. I am going to pay the fine when that is levied, whenever that is. I want to move forward.” Martin couldn’t recall the specific texts in question, but believes they were to Oravec. “I was under the impression that they may have been deleted, (but) they were still retrievable in the phone. Supporting documents detailing the charges are expected to be released in the coming weeks. “It’s a bit early to tell, because (the charges) are superficial right now just with the information that’s been sent into the Clerk of County Courts,” Berger said. “I am looking forward to really digging into the details and getting the context behind each (charge).” “For me, personally, criminal issues are very concerning and my most important issue is making sure the public and their interest is the No. 1 issue,” she said. “Breaching the public trust is not an option and that has happened before in the city of Port St. Lucie. We have been scarred with that and I want that to end.” Faiella briefly addressed the charges from her head seat at the dais. “I’m going to fight mine,” Faiella said, adding she hired a personal defense lawyer. The request was denied and on Nov. 22, the deadline for the deal to become final, the contract was terminated. Bremer said through attorney negotiations, the city requested $250,000 from Friedberg and $60,000 for carrying costs per month. Friedberg declined, Bremer said. The Port St. Lucie City Council voted 4-1 to accept the offer from Freidberg’s company Horizon Central Global LLC at its July 8 meeting. The only dissenting vote belonged to Michelle Berger. Horizon Central Global is a company registered in Delaware, Bremer said. It created a Vero Beach-based corporation this year solely to purchase Tradition Studios. The parent company’s name is unknown, but Bremer said it is involved in investment, construction and property purchase. In the past, Friedberg has filed for bankruptcy on several business ventures in New York and Connecticut, court documents show. Bremer doesn’t believe Friedberg’s financial woes had any bearing on the deal falling through. “I don’t consider that to be an impediment. He was not exactly the money person. He was rep-

AAAS and Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies announce 2013 fellows FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
TRADITION — Richard A. Houghten, Ph.D. of Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies has been named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Election as a AAAS Fellow is an honor bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers. This year, 388 members have been awarded this honor by AAAS because of their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications. New Fellows will be presented with an official certificate and a gold and blue (representing science and engineering, respectively) rosette pin on Saturday, Feb. 15 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the AAAS Fellows Forum during the 2014 AAAS Annual Meeting in Chicago. This year’s AAAS Fellows will be formally announced in the AAAS News & Notes section of the journal Science on Nov. 29. As part of the Section of Phar-
maceutical Sciences, Dr. Richard A. Houghten was elected as an AAAS Fellow for scientific contributions in combinatorial chemistry including the “tea bag” approach, which has resulted in the synthesis of millions of peptides and low molecular weight compounds. The tradition of AAAS Fellows began in 1874. Currently, members can be considered for the rank of fellow if nominated by the steering groups of the Association’s 24 sections, or by any three Fellows who are current AAAS members (so long as two of the three sponsors are not affiliated with the nominee’s institution), or by the AAAS chief executive officer. Fellows must have been continuous members of AAAS for four years by the end of the calendar year in which they are elected. Each steering group reviews the nominations of individuals within its respective section and a final list is forwarded to the AAAS Council, which votes on the aggregate list.
The Council is the policymaking body of the Association, chaired by the AAAS president, and consisting of the members of the board of directors, the retiring section chairs, delegates from each electorate and each regional division, and two delegates from the National Association of Academies of Science. Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies is a 501(c) (3) research center dedicated to conducting basic research to advance the understanding of human disease and the improvement of human health. Scientists conduct research in fields associated with a wide variety of major medical conditions, including multiple sclerosis, cancer, heart disease, Types I and II diabetes, macular degeneration, pain management, Alzheimer’s, inflammatory disorders, AIDS and other infectious diseases, regenerative medicine, obesity, transplant rejection, muscle wasting syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis and new methods for drug discovery.

SUNSHINE from page A6 ruary, Oravec shined light on the brewing controversy in an emailed 82-page package of memos that chronicled a volatile relationship between he and Bowen since Bowen took office last year. Oravec said the release to the press was an accident. One memo hinted that council members privately convened to discuss Oravec’s worth in his post, a direct violation of Sunshine Law. In an exchange between the Oravec and Bowen, post-dated Dec. 19, 2012, Bowen wrote, “First of all, you seem to have a bad habit of wanting the last word with me no matter what the circumstance is,” Bowen said. “Your self-righteous tone of voice on a voice message has me wondering if you understand that you work for the Council.” Oravec, accompanied by his wife, made his first appearance at City Hall since his release to speak during the public comment portion of Monday’s meeting. “We’ve been residents for nearly 12 years and for the first time since we started our life here in the city for all ages, I would like to address the city council during this public to be heard (portion) as a resident, free of the obligations and restrictions which precluded me from taking such an opportunity when I was an employee of the city,” Oravec said. “I have to con-
fess this is truly a cathartic experience. For the first time I can share what I really think from taxpayer, homeowner and small businessman to my elected officials.” During his three minutes allotted to speaking, Oravec addressed government transparency and restrictions the public faces at council meetings. “On this, my first time at public to be heard, I think it’s only appropriate to talk about public to be heard and to ask you, the city council, who have run for office on themes such as openness, public participation, transparency and Sunshine, how you can approve 4-1, with Mr. Bowen making the motion, to move public to be heard after the Pledge of Allegiance, which seems pretty spot on in my book as an American, to the end of the meeting, discouraging your busy residents, who don’t have the luxury of sitting through your open-ended meetings, from participating in their government,” Oravec said. “Moreover, how can you then reduce the time allotted to each speaker from five minutes to three minutes?” he said. “How do you reconcile your words concerning openness, public participation, transparency and Sunshine with your actions? How could you literally put the public last on the agenda of public business?” Oravec declined comment on the charges brought to the three councilmembers.

ST. LUCIE WEST — St. Lucie County’s Public Safety and Communications Department will be conducting a massive multi-agency emergency response training exercise on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at Tradition Field. “Residents in the immediate area can expect to hear simulated gun fire, explosions and lots of sirens and helicopters throughout most of the morning,” said Tom Daly, emergency management coordinator for St. Lucie County. “We can’t give out too many details, because we want to see how well our first responders react to the various scenarios that we have planned.” The simulated emergency event will involve hundreds of student actors, law enforcement officers and first responders, including representatives from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, Port St.
Lucie Police, Fort Pierce Police, St. Lucie County Fire District, the St. Lucie County Health Department, Port St. Lucie Hospital, Lawnwood Medical Center, Martin Memorial Health Systems, Safer St. Lucie, American Red Cross, Medical Reserve Corps and Critical Infrastructure Support Group. Dozens of local high school drama students will be participating as actors during the drill. In addition to exercises being conducted at Tradition Field, simulated events will be performed at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute, which may result in road closures and traffic being re-routed in and around the hospital. The Dec. 4 training exercise is being funded through a federal grant provided by Department of Homeland Security and is being facilitated by representatives from all of the agencies participating.

Helping People Succeed benefactors challenge community to raise $100,000 for families, children FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
TREASURE COAST — Helping People Succeed benefactors Rich and Yvonne Ross are challenging the Martin County community and Helping People Succeed’s Board of Directors to raise $100,000 for the local non-profit organization, as it nears its 50th anniversary in March. Ross, a longtime and now former board member, and his wife, are taking the first step to help raise these funds. The Richard and Yvonne Ross Charitable Foundation is committed to match, dollar for dollar, the first $50,000 raised between now and the end of the year. The Rosses are asking the community to support Helping People Succeed, recognizing its many programs and services that benefit more than 4,500 families in Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties. “Helping People Succeed helps people that are less gifted than most in order that they may become independent and active members of our community,” said Rich and Yvonne. To meet the community challenge, contributions may be mailed to Helping People Succeed at 1100 S. Federal Highway in Stuart, or donated online at www.hpsfl.org. For additional information, please contact Gift Planning Officer Glenna Parris at (772) 320-0778.

“We are excited about this community challenge from Rich and Yvonne, especially as we approach our 50th anniversary in 2014,” said Suzy Hutcheson, president/CEO of Helping People Succeed. “Every gift counts, no matter what the size and we would encourage our community to step up to match, dollar for dollar, the Ross gift by the end of the year.” Opened in 1964 as the Pioneer Occupational Center, Helping People Succeed first worked with adults with disabilities on training and social skills that enabled them to obtain a basic trade, such as coordinating postal mailings for clients or stuffing advertising circulars in newspapers. As the years evolved, Helping People Succeed has developed family services from birth to 5 years old through its Baby Steps, Healthy Families, Music & Movement, and other programs. Employment options and community connections are two areas that work with the adults with disabilities finding jobs at local businesses and designing creative projects. In its Behavioral Health Services, Helping People Succeed has added autism classes, working with local elementary, middle and high school students with autism spectrum disorder during after-school programs and now expanding services into counseling, yoga and art therapy classes.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce has appointed Terissa Aronson as president and chief executive officer effective Dec. 1. Aronson served as the Chamber’s Director of Business Services for six years. She was appointed interim president/CEO when predecessor Linda Cox left to become the city clerk for the city of Fort Pierce. After a nationwide search, the Chamber’s Board of Directors chose Aronson who has effected many positive changes for the Chamber in her previous position. Aronson says she is looking forward to a productive year for the Chamber. With strong momentum and a strengthening economic climate, the Chamber of Commerce expects to see growth in the coming year. There is going to be a silent auction, as well as multiple door prizes. the events have always been fun-filled — good food, lots of music to dance to, and a really nice group of people. The Pan American Round Table is not just about scholarships. The Treasure Coast chapter also supports the local low-income community in the following ways: this past week we donated numerous Thanksgiving baskets; we give toys to children at Christmas; we provide school supplies to a selected school in a low-income community; and we have donated clothing to a local domestic violence shelter. All of the above are very worthy causes, and your support is sincerely appreciated. Working together, we can make a difference! If you cannot attend our Fundraiser Dinner Dance, please consider giving the Pan American Round Table a donation for our silent auction i.e: gift certificate, gift basket, product, or monetary gift. We’ll make every effort to make sure that your company gets mentioned at the event and in a future newsletter.

Que rico! Pueblo Viejo a delicious taste of Mexico Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer
nrodriguez@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE WEST — Tucked away on Peacock Boulevard lies an authentic taste of Mexican fare without the expense of a trip across the border. Pueblo Viejo boasts classic mariachi music streaming from ceiling speakers and ornate, wooden seating carved with flowers in bright hues that ooze the flair of a Mexican casa, or “home” in English, filled with love, laughter and the scent of sizzling fajitas seasoned to perfection. The restuarant is family-owned and operated with five locations on the Treasure Coast since 1999. Each location is owned by a brother in the Rodriguez family. The St. Lucie West location, which previously was home to another Mexican restaurant, has been under the ownership of Luis Rodriguez for the past six months, manager Jorge Morales said. Morales described the locations as consistent in recipes with a special devotion to customer service. “All of the restaurants use the same recipes. We also try to give good service ... We try to make
the customers happy,” Morales said. All of the restaurant’s dishes are oversized and easily shareable. A great aperitivo, or appetizer, is the Pueblo Viejo Platter ($10.25). The plate comes with a combination of beef nachos, cheeses quesadillas, chicken Mexican taquitos, or mini tacos, refried beans in a crispy flour tortilla shell, guacamole and sour cream, garnished with tomatoes and black olives. A lighter appetizer is the Jalapeño Poppers ($6.95). The plate comes with the tender peppers, stuffed with battered cheese and deep-fried. The peppers aren’t that spicy on their own, but that’s what the hot salsa on the side is for. A muy bueno, or very good, menu item is the Supreme Burrito ($10.95). It’s a flour tortilla wrap filled with Spanish rice and your choice of ground beef, chicken or shredded beef. All of the meat is fresh, and never dry, so choose away and disfrutar, or enjoy! The gigante, or giant burrito is topped with fresh lettuce, tomatoes and sour cream with beans on the side. An asombroso, or amazing,

PUEBLO from page B1 entree comes straight from the Chef’s Specials list. The Tacos al Gusto comes in either chicken and pork ($12.50) or steak ($13.25). The savory skirt steak is recommended and comes garnished with lettuce and chopped onions in a soft tortilla with cilantro, beans and Spanish rice on the side. You can’t go wrong with any dish that includes the long, flat pieces of the tenderized and highly flavorful cut of meat. A perfecto, or perfect, dessert to finish off your meal is the flan. HUNGARIAN from page B4 thentic folk dances. Many of them were collected from isolated villages and contain dance elements that go back hundreds of years. Twelve couples in the program change costumes frequently, to reflect the regions the dances come from. The dancers are accompanied by the Folk Orchestra, playing authentic, traditional instruments. This lively music provided inspiration for composers such as Liszt Brahms, Bartok and Kodaly. The program at the Sunrise, called “Hungarian Rhapsody,” includes dances and costumes from every region of Hungary. There are dances for couples, dances for men alone, a jumping dance, a men’s dance with tools and even music from Transylvania. That music originated in the Renaissance and was preserved by Gypsy musicians. The music includes the use of the cimbalom, or hammered dulcimer. Maria Ferencz is managing director of the ensemble, which is making its sixth tour of the United States. They will perform
in 60 cities while they are here. Ferencz said that the music is centuries old because people have always loved to sing and play instruments. The program is 90 minutes, with an intermission. Ferencz said that families should bring their children. “It is for any age,” she said. “It’s even for young children. We’re used to performing in schools. It’s very colorful and the dances themselves speak. I think it’s spectacular and the audience responds to it very well. It’s always good to learn about people around the world. Art shows how people lived and enjoyed themselves. People like it and that’s why we come again and again.” The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble performs at the Sunrise Theatre, 117 S. Second St., Fort Pierce, Dec, 4 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $35 and $45. Call the box office at (772) 4614775 or order online at www. sunrisetheatre.com. and plants have changed the Florida environment, impacted native animals, and led to serious issues for residents and land managers throughout the state. The lecture is free and open to the general public. • Jewelry Making with Bobbie returns Friday, Dec. 6 from 5 -7 p.m. We all know that home-made gifts are the most meaningful. Now here’s your chance to wow a loved one by creating one-ofa-kind jewelry designed just for them. Do you have a sentimental piece of jewelry that you would like to revive again or use in more than one piece to share with several members of your family? Oxbow volunteer Bobbie Richards will help you create pieces that are unique. The cost is $20 and includes all materials. Appropriate for ages 12 and older, class size is limited, so reservations are required: (772) 785-5833 or oxbow@ stlucieco.org. (Special offer – get $5 off the Jewelry Making class when you purchase $15 or more of handmade jewelry at the Oxbow gift store.) • The Oxbow’s Brown Bag Lecture features a special presentation from the Busch Wildlife Center on Saturday, Dec. 7 at noon. From panthers to skunks, Busch Wildlife in Jupiter is home to many Florida mammals, some temporarily housed before being released back into the wild, others that become permanent residents because they could not survive in the wild. During this presentation participants will meet some of the sanctuary’s furry, scaly and feathered permanent residents. Learn about what you can do to help protect Florida’s animals and how detrimental invasive animals are to our ecosystems. This will be the last chance to bring any donations of needed supplies for the Busch Wildlife Center. The cost is $5 per person. No reservations are required, but please arrive early as seating is very limited. • Join Miss Kitty for an environmentally-themed storytime at the Oxbow’s Swamp Tales on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 3:45 p.m. Each month the story changes, but the fun never stops. This free story and activity program is appropriate for ages 3-6. • All aboard as the Oxbow’s monthly Art Class teaches participants to make Gingerbread Trains on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 10 a.m. Treasure Coast Art Association teams up with Oxbow to present this fun, nature-inspired art class. The cost of the class is $20 and includes all supplies. Class size is limited. Appropriate for ages 8 and older, reservations are required: (772) 785-5833 or oxbow@stlucieco.org. • Buzz into the Oxbow on Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. for the Bee Keepers meeting. The Treasure Coast Beekeeper Association (TCBA) is a nonprofit organization that provides education
www.YourVoiceWeekly.com about bees and beekeeping for people of the Treasure Coast. Every month there is a new bee-related learning opportunity. These lectures are free and open to the general public. • Join like-minded garden enthusiasts Thursday, Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. for the Oxbow’s Butterfly Garden Committee as they plan and design the Oxbow’s butterfly gardens. Can’t make it this day? You can still be part of this fun group by helping to plant and tend the garden every Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m. Reservations are requested: (772) 785-5833 or oxbow@stlucieco.org. • Oxbow and the Natives uncovers the mystery of “The Vanishing Florida Panther” on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 3:45 p.m. Have you ever heard tales from one of your friends or neighbors who have seen a panther in their backyard? They may not be wrong. Historically the enigmatic panthers roamed all over St. Lucie County. Come and learn about this critically endangered animal at this free presentation designed for children ages 5 and older. No reservations required. • The Oxbow’s Treehouse Time lets the holiday spirit ring on Friday, Dec. 20 at 9:30 a.m. with a Holiday Sing-along. Warm up your vocal pipes and join us for a quaint holiday sing-along with the always entertaining Miss Kathy as she plays some of the most popular holiday carols and other in-the-spirit songs. This is a free program appropriate for ages 2 to 6 with an adult. • Learn to get limber with Tai Chi for Health. Beginner and intermediate classes are held on Tuesdays (Dec. 3, 10, 17) at 10:30 a.m.; Fridays (Dec. 6, 13, 20, 27) at 9:15 a.m. and Saturdays (Dec. 7, 14, 21, 28) at 3 p.m. Tai Chi Yang Form Classes are held on Fridays (Dec. 6, 13, 20, 27) at 10:30 a.m. Note there will be no class on Dec. 24 or Dec. 31. Tai Chi instructors Hildie and Hector Ruiz-Puyana will lead the classes, designed for everyone, including those who suffer from arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis and balance issues. Appropriate for ages 16 and older, the cost is $10 per class or $32 for four classes. Reservations are required: (772) 785-5833 or oxbow@ stlucieco.org. Please note the Oxbow Eco-Center will be closed Tuesday, Dec. 24, Wednesday, Dec. 25 and Wednesday, Jan. 1, but the trails will remain open daily from dawn until dusk. Situated on a 225-acre preserve on the North Fork of the St. Lucie River, the Oxbow offers a rare glimpse of “the real Florida” with nature trails, boardwalks, observation towers and an interactive environmental learning center. The Oxbow Eco-Center is located at 5400 N.E. St. James Drive, Port St. Lucie (across from the Publix Shopping Center). For more information call the staff at (772) 7855833 or visit www.oxboweco.com.

The Port St. Lucie Anglers Club announces its third annual ‘Nautical Flea Market’ on Saturday, Jan. 11. FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
PORT ST. LUCIE — Learning from the comments of past vendors and participants this year’s event has been greatly expanded. Last year a number of vendors had to be turned away due to lack of space. With a redistribution of the vendor area and increase in the total amount of land available for the Nautical Flea Market, The Port St. Lucie Anglers are now able to provide more space for vendors and continue their policy of free parking and admission to the flea market. The club organizers have indicated there will be many more opportunities for attendees to

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Sinbad, the greatest funny man of all time, will have you laughing in the aisles of the Historic Sunrise Theatre on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 8 p.m. Actor and comedian Sinbad arrived on the comedy scene with a “hit’em in the face” style of comedy for over two decades. The basis of his humor comes from everyone he meets, everything he has seen, and everything he has done. Ranked by Comedy Central as one of the top 100 stand-up comedians of all time, Sinbad has built a loyal following by taking audiences’ painful trials or embarrassing tribulations of day-to-day life, throwing them back in their faces, and causing uproar of comedic hysteria. Sinbad is internationally known for his starring appearances in hit movies like “Jingle All the Way,” “Houseguest,” and “Necessary Roughness.” He starred in the television sitcom “A Different World,” as well as his own series, The Sinbad Show. Sinbad has drawn legions of fans from his HBO highly-rated comedy specials; “Brain Damaged,” “Afros & Bellbottoms,” “Son of a Preacher Man,” and “Nuthin But The Funk.” His annual HBO music concert series Sinbad’s ‘70s Soul Music Festival received the prestigious
NAACP Image Award consecutively for two years as the “Most Outstanding Variety Series/ Special.” Sinbad appeared on the FX Television series “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and his long-awaited stand-up special aired on Comedy Central this past February. Most recently, Sinbad was seen in the third season of NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice.” Take a break from Christmas shopping and enjoy some laughs with Sinbad on Dec. 7! For tickets to An Evening with Sinbad, priced at $39/$35 call the box office at (772) 461-4775 or visit us online at www.SunriseTheatre. com. The Sunrise Theatre for the Performing Arts is an intimate venue, offering the best entertainment and state-of-the-art sound on the Treasure Coast. The Sunrise Theatre presents a diverse schedule of national touring Broadway shows, musical and comedy acts, ballet and opera companies with full orchestras, country stars and classic rock icons. ANGLERS from page B17 find just the right nautical item at the best possible price while not have to pay any admission charge for the day. Last year’s event saw several vendors completely sold out of their wares while many individuals were able to find a new home for their unwanted fishing and boating gear. Any and all items related to a nautical theme can be sold and found at the Flea Market including vessels up to 20 feet in length. Last year several boats were sold. The Nautical Flea Market will be held from 8 a.m.to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, at the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens, 2410 S.E. Westmoreland Blvd., Port St. Lucie. The Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens is partnering with the PSL Anglers to hold this event and will provide free admission to the gardens for all attendees. Additional information about the Flea Market and the Port St. Lucie Anglers Club can be obtained by calling Frank Gamber at (772) 224-5029 or through their website at www.pslan-
glers.com. The Port St. Lucie Anglers Club was first organized in 1960 and has continuously been in operation since that time. The Anglers Club now meets on the second Thursday of each month at the Botanical Gardens between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. The meetings are open to the public. Each month a professional in a fishing related specialty is the guest speaker and several times a year special clinics are held for instructional purposes in various phases of sport fishing. A unique and very popular aspect of the club is to match fisherman and women with boats with those who do not have boats to ensure all members get plenty of opportunity to enjoy the skills they have learned at our meeting. The matching of experience fishermen and women with less experienced anglers also is stressed. All of these benefits are available to members. We have young and old members, men and women, experienced and newcomers to the sport. So come on down to our meetings for a fun and informative evening.

I never thought anything could be more exciting than the day we said, “I do.” But moving into our own home is right up there. I was nervous at first. There was so much we didn’t know! Thankfully, we found a mortgage loan officer who specialized in helping first-time buyers. She walked us through every step of our financing from pre-qualification1 to closing.
