IRSC students using 3D printing to help local businesses create parts and packaging Indian River State College students Nick Rotindo and William Hutchison of St. Lucie West prepare the programming for a demonstration of the college’s latest endeavor of 3D printing at the Brown Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship on the college’s Fort Pierce campus.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Three-dimensional printing started as a seldom-seen process many people became enamored with after watching a Youtube video and seeing a machine continuously drip plastic until a 3-D model is created. But, those days are mostly done with 3D printer prices dropping and popularity ramping up. The printers range drastically in size and cost. Some are about the size of an average microwave, perhaps taller, and one model — believed to be the smallest 3-D printer available, is just 8 inches high and 4 inches wide.

Commercial developments picking up the pace in St. Lucie West Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER
bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE WEST — A slew of new developments are coming to fruition in St. Lucie West, making it only a short matter of time until the region is fully built-out. Today’s St. Lucie West stands in stark contrast to what originally stood in the early ‘90s. It started with the PGA Clubhouse,
Publix and Kmart. Now businesses are at every turn and there’s more to come. Developers submitted plans to build a Pollo Tropical restaurant, a Caribbean-inspired chain known for its fresh grilled chicken and traditional sides such as rice and beans, at the Shoppes in St. Lucie West. Menin Development, the company that owns the Shoppes plaza, also has plans for a 10,000-square-foot store (that
hasn’t been revealed) in the plaza next to LA Fitness. A HomeGoods furniture store is also set to be built next to Burlington Coat Factory, but a date has not been set for its arrival. Commercial development is about 67 percent completed, according to an assessment done in July by the St. Lucie West Services District, but residential development is mostly complete at 94 percent. Fountain View Plaza, across
from Carrabba’s Italian Grill, will have restaurants, retail stores and a couple hundred condos, St. Lucie West Services District manager Dennis Pickle said. There is also space next to Tradition Stadium as well as an11-acre plat next to South County Stadium for apartment complexes. Pickle, who’s lived in the area for the past seven years, said St.

Attorney advises public to have an estate plan Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
TREASURE COAST — If attorney Robert Kulas could give one piece of advice to the public about estate planning, it would be to have a plan. “Everyone needs an estate plan once they’re 18,” he said. “You should go to an attorney (who) is qualified in estate planning and have a plan in place. Then you don’t have to worry.” Kulas received an undergraduate degree in English literature from the University of Miami, but he soon realized he had to find another area to pursue to make a living. “Right after graduation, I decided I needed to do something else,” he said. “I went to law school.” Kulas, who currently makes his home in Palm City, received his law degree from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., and started in private practice. “After seven or eight years, I was tired of litigation, divorces and fighting,” he said “I decided to see what I could do where people would leave my office feeling good.” He decided estate planning was
the best way to help his clients. “People come in worried about what happens,” he said. “By setting up an estate plan, we’re able to ease their concerns. A plan in place gives peace of mind.” Kulas said that 60 percent of the people in the United States have no estate plan and no will. While most of his clients are retired, he can set up plans for families with children over 18, who are, of course, legally adults. The plans can give the parents power of attorney and the right to make medical decisions if something happens to the adult child. Planning for the unexpected is a message Kulas conveys to all his clients. Spouses often come in and tell him that they are leaving assets to each other. “If they own jointly, assets go to the survivor,” he said. “What happens when the second one passes, or if they die in a common disaster? What happens if one dies and the other is incapacitated? It could end up in court. “We try to cover as far as we can. Most people say they want assets to go to kids, but what if one child predeceases the parents? There are a lot of decisions to make to make sure it’s the way they want. Lots of things
may or may not happen. You need to trust who you’re working with and tell them the facts. Clients may not have thought of something. We need to talk and discuss it so we can bring points up.” Kulas acknowledges that this is not an easy topic for most people. “People don’t want to talk about death or taxes,” he said. “It needs to be addressed.” To that end, the practice offers seminars to the public. “We give an education so when they do come in, they are prepared,” he said. “It’s usually a story about a married couple with a couple of kids and the things that may or may not happen.” In the initial consultation with prospective clients, Kulas talks about goals, about what they would want if they became incapacitated or died. If the person becomes a client, they go into financial details and discuss trusts, wills and the very important Health Care Power of Attorney, specifying who will make health care decisions for a person if they are unable to do so. “This is more important than a will because it’s while you’re still here,” Kulas said. “We use them while you’re alive. You need to talk to your spouse and
Robert Kulas kids about burial instructions, if there is a specific burial place and where assets are located. It’s important for the people who will take over to know it. Kids often have no idea. “We counsel our clients to talk to their spouses,” he said. “Sometimes, the spouse has never written a check. We tell them that

City approves Somerset charter school move in St. Lucie West Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER
bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com

ST. LUCIE WEST — The Somerset College Preparatory Academy will have a new home. After months of proposing plans to various city agencies and having the decision delayed,
Somerset supporters got their wish at the Oct. 27 Port St. Lucie City Council meeting when the Council unanimously approved plans to build a new school on a 10-acre parcel at the northeast corner of Peacock and California boulevards. “I’m relieved,” Erica Rains, the school’s principal said. “I’m
grateful and thankful to the city and so very thankful to the parents, students and people who have no relation to the school who have showed up and supported us each step of the way.” City council meetings have been unusually packed with many people having to watch the meetings on televisions outside council chambers due to them being filled to capacity. At the last meeting, about 180 supporters attended. If construction permits can be obtained quickly, the school will be built and ready for the 201516 school year, but a 2016-17 opening is more likely. The school currently has 302 students, grades nine through 12, and the new school will have up to 600 students in 2016 with more spots being added in future phases, the plans show. Those projections assume the addition of a middle school, however, which was denied by the St. Lucie County School Board. Rains said 200 of those students would be middle-schoolers in 2016. One of the reasons the school board denied the application was because the school’s plans weren’t innovative enough. A new partnership with the city could alter that perception, though. Councilwoman Michelle Berger said, while the partnership is in its infancy stages, the city will likely offer internships and have guest teachers give lectures at the school. “There’s not a lot of interest in public service any longer, but there may be an opportunity here to get that interest started and allow the school to be a feeder system into our govern-
Erica Rains ment agency, to the county and to the sheriff’s agency and our local agencies here to get public service started right away,” Berger said. City manager Jeff Bremer said he’s taught as a guest teacher at past jobs in similar partnerships. “One of the things I really think is lacking is a concentrating on local government. You have classes that teach you how things are done at the federal and state level, and one of the things I’ve done is go in and teach the kids what we do on the local level,” he said. The Somerset’s Board of Directors, which oversees all 57 Somerset charters, may not challenge the school board’s ruling, however, and is going to decide its course of action Nov. 17. Somerset has never lost an appeal in any of its cases, Andreina Figueroa, the board’s chairwoman, said. “I feel very confident that we could certainly win,” she said. “The issue is the delay.”

St. Lucie Sheriff’s K-9s impress at meeting of Cascades Veterans Mary Kemper STAFF WRITER
mkemper@veteranvoiceweekly.com
ST. LUCIE WEST — A three-man team from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office gave a demonstration with two of their K-9 unit dogs, including a simulated takedown of a suspect, at the Oct. 15 meeting of the Cascades Veterans Club of the Cascades of St. Lucie West. Sgt. Tony Cavallaro, assisted by Deputies Marc Geisler and Brandon Nuccio, showed how the highly trained dogs acted on command. The demonstration also included how, in addition to taking down criminal suspects, the dogs are trained to sniff out narcotics. To illustrate a search, Geisler led the K-9 Jax along a row of folded tables leaning against a wall of the Cascades ballroom — and sure enough, Jax found real marijuana that had been hidden ahead of time. Cavallaro said the dogs also assist in establishing probable cause for searching vehicles for suspected narcotics. “The dogs can smell narcotics in the outside air surrounding the vehicle, which keeps the legal process intact,” he explained. Under the Sheriff’s Office School Resource Division, the K-9s can also detect bombs or narcotics; and yet another mission is assisting in jail “shakedowns” to search for contraband.

herd types, in particular the Belgian Malinois,” Cavallaro said. As he spoke, his K-9, RJ, strained at the leash. At one point, he was allowed to roam the audience, to the delight of the members, who petted the friendly dog. “You can see how much energy he has,” Cavallaro said. “And in their job, they need it. They work very, very hard.” All of the service dogs are purchased overseas, from countries like the Czech Republic, Hungary and the Netherlands, he said. Breeders there train them in learning specific habits before they’re more fully trained by the Sheriff’s Office handlers. “We have vendors that go over and ID the prospects, and then we’ll send someone from (the Sheriff’s Office) to go over and select the likely candidates,” Cavallaro said. “They’re trained using classical conditioning techniques, if anyone remembers hearing of B.F. Skinner (pioneering psychologist famous for developing the technique),” he said. “It’s positive reinforcement, or correction for negative, to get them to do the things you need them to do. “It’s command-task-reward.” So specialized is the K-9 training that they can even help find
Alzheimer’s patients who wander away from home. “Under a bracelet program, (medical) staff can locate a patient through a radio signal,” Cavallaro said. “If someone cuts off his or her bracelet, our K-9s can find the patient by his or her scent.” It takes 400 hours, or 10 weeks, to train a K-9 after it has been given basic command training in Europe. Typically, the dogs begin work at 1 year old and continue to work until they’re 8 to 10, Cavallaro said. “When a dog retires, the handler has the choice of keeping him or putting him in a family member’s care. They need constant, specialized attention, and the handler or his family is best equipped to take them in.” Cavallaro said he and his team enjoy making presentations to schools and other groups like the Cascades Veterans “probably most of all,” as it’s clearly meant for education and enjoyment, rather than real danger out in the field. After a question-and-answer period, the Sheriff’s Office team was thanked and bidden good-

Indian River State College is also getting in on the hype by helping local businesses manufacture parts and packaging to save costs. IRSC faculty and students are creating a plastic package to house a remote yacht monitoring system, created by Yacht Watchman, a Stuart-based company. The company has several monitoring systems that attach to boat and allow the owner to monitor battery levels, location, water levels, hatches and other important information about his or her boat while away via text message or email. Students are working on all phases of packaging production, which include the design, graphics and production. Once the students finish perfecting the prototype, the company will be able to send an order to a manufacturing company to get the mold mass-produced. “We have everything to take from test to the market,” IRSC Advanced Technology director Kevin Cooper said. By having the prototype tested and tinkered with at IRSC, companies save money, Yacht Watchman CEO Jim Knoska said. “We’ve been in business for a long time, but launching it when you’re an entrepreneur with only so many dollars, it’s not easy,” he said. “It’s making it possible and what’s it’s doing is it’s giving us a venue to utilize the skillset of students and the assets university to develop things that
would be very costly.” The students are also creating a metal material to print with, so they can build more commercial parts. “It’s a high-end research project,” Cooper said. “We’ll be able to make metal parts that are usable in multiple industries.” John Zerdi, an IRSC architecture professor, created a fishing lure that has three interchangeable segments that can be swapped out, based on what the angler is fishing for. Cooper said Zerdi is one of many others who have approached him for help in developing prototypes. “The idea is, if you go into an AutoZone, you don’t have a shelf full of parts — you can print a part in 45 minutes if you need a part,” he said. A bullet-proof vest is also on the wish list, made from a printer. “It would be strong enough to protect you from a bullet, but fit you correctly,” Cooper said. Cooper said he’d like to branch out to teach IRSC students from other fields about 3-D printing, such as nursing, because 3-D printing’s largest market is the medical field. William Hutchison, a senior automotive management student from St. Lucie West, said after starting to use the printer in July, he’s going to pursue a career in 3-D modeling and structuring, rather than his major. “This is starting to look even better than my area,” he said. “It’s a new field, and nobody’s really doing much with it, yet.”
if one is handling the finances, let the other do it with supervision for a while, and know where the accounts are located.” The Kulas firm is a family affair. His wife, Roberta, is the office manager and his brother, Andreas, who is also an attorney, runs the Vero Beach office. They recently hired a young attorney to handle elder law and Medicaid issues. “In this area, a nursing home costs $7,000 a month,” Kulas said. “If you plan when you’re young, you get long-term care insurance. People have car and homeowners insurance, while the

It was also agreed to put an American flag in the lobby, “which should happen in any case,” Pescino said.

Centennial’s playoff hopes end in shutout loss Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER

ST. LUCIE WEST — The small crowd of St. Lucie West Centennial football supporters who attended the team’s Halloween night game didn’t get much of a treat. The team’s playoff hopes ended with a 35-0 loss to division opponent Vero Beach (9-0, 3-0 in district play), which secured the District 8-8A championship

at South County Stadium. Five turnovers by Centennial (2-6, 1-2) made it difficult to sustain many drives. “We need to take care of our opportunities,” Centennial head coach Ron Parker said. “We had some defensive stops. We played physical. We ran the ball well at times. We threw the ball well at times. We’ve just got to get better and put it all together,” he said. The team looked well-positioned to give Vero a tough run in the final division matchup of the season during the first drive, though. Led by quarterback Javid Ellis, Centennial marched down the field during its first possession on a 12-play drive, eight of which were runs by Ellis. A missed field goal ended the drive, however, at Vero’s 9-yard line. Ellis had a game-high 116 rushing yards on 30 carries. The first score of the game came on a 1-yard run by Vero Beach quarterback Carter Stanley with 9:12 left in the second quarter. Stanley had 106 yards on 23 carries. Over half of the first half offensive plays for both teams were quarterback runs, which wasn’t much of a surprise from Centennial. But, Vero Beach is typically a pass-heavy team. “Carter’s a great runner, and I feel like he gave us the best advantage. It wasn’t squeaky clean by any stretch, but it worked out for us,” Vero Beach head coach Lenny Jankowski said. “They were dropping eight in coverage at times … so we felt like we could get an advantage,” he said. “We didn’t want any style points, just coming out and doing whatever it takes to win.” Stanley still threw the ball effectively, though, going 13 of 18 for 102 yards and a touchdown, which came on an 18-yard strike to wide receiver Chris Larson,
Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer St. Lucie West Centennial High School quarterback Javid Ellis looked to be a one man rushing crew with his 30 carries for 116 yards against the undefeated Vero Beach Fighting Indians during their match-up at South County Stadium Friday, Oct. 31. The Centennial Eagles lost the game 35-0. taking Vero’s halftime lead to 14-0. Stanley added his second rushing touchdown midway through the third quarter, on a 1-yard dive. Vero Beach added two touchdowns in the first minute of the final quarter on an 8-yard run
by MJ McGriff and an Antonio Davis 26-yard interception return. Centennial takes on Port St. Lucie 6 p.m. Thursday for its final game of the season. “That’s our playoff game, right there,” Parker said.

Textor’s Pulse Evolution adds another hologram to its list Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER
bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com
TRADITION — Pulse Evolution, the new Digital Effects company in Tradition that formed from the ashes Digital Domain left, will be adding a new famous figure – both literally and figuratively – to its list of deceased celebrities it’s making into holograms. American model, singer, actress and sex-symbol Marilyn Monroe will be the newest addition to the company’s lineup which features rapper Tupac Shakur, “King of Pop” Michael Jackson and rock ‘n’ roll legend Elvis Presley. “We are thrilled to showcase our leading celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley to audiences around the world through the gold standard of lifelike human animation created by Pulse Evolution,” said Jamie Salter, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Authentic Brands Group, the licensing agency that manages the Marilyn Monroe and Elis Presley brands.
Authentic Brands also manages the Muhammad Ali brand, but plans to get the boxer back in the ring haven’t been announced. The project is one of many the company is working on, said John Textor, chairman of Pulse Evolution. “We are honored to commit our creativity, technology and passion to the creation of a digital likeness of Marilyn Monroe that will celebrate her legacy, her beauty and her special place within our hearts,” he said. Announcements like this have made it less difficult for the young company to gain traction in the digital effects industry after Digital domain failed, but Textor said give the company another 18 months and people will be able to experience augmented reality through glasses much like Google Glass. Augmented reality would allow the digital likeness to walk about the audience as audience members where lightweight glasses. “Augmented reality is a significant part of our strategy,” Textor
said. “One person can look across the aisle seeing Elvis singing to a woman, and the woman is sitting in her chair, thinking Elvis is singing to her.” Textor said the company went public earlier this month partly to be able to acquire companies that specialize in that technology. The move will allow Pulse to use shares as a currency to purchase companies to allow that vision become reality – or at least a perceived reality for now.

COMMERCIAL from page A1 Lucie West commercial development has been more active than he’s ever seen. “In the last six months, I’ve seen a lot more plans and interest,” he said. We’re not to level of 2005 construction … but the commercial side is moving really well right now.” The old Albertsons store at the corner of Cashmere and St. Lucie West boulevards will likely have a new tenant soon, too. All signs have pointed toward the plaza being converted to a Walmart Neighborhood Market,
which is Walmart’s grocery-store chain that would likely offer a less hectic and crowded trip for those who go to Walmart Supercenters for only groceries. Port St. Lucie’s City Council denied plans for a Walmart market along the northwest corner of Cashmere and St. Lucie West boulevards and, instead, allowed the St. Lucie West Services District to use the land for a large stormwater retention pond. When the city approved the plans to allow the services district to use the land, Councilwoman Linda Bartz said she heard there were plans for
Walmart to take their market across the street. City manager Jeff Bremer said nothing is confirmed, yet. “We know they’re looking at the old Albertsons, but we don’t know if that’s for sure yet,” he said. With a great increase in development comes a great increase in traffic. The original developer plans for St. Lucie West, submitted by the Thomas J. White Development Company in 1986, stated there would be a need to increase St. Lucie West Boulevard to six lanes and Cashmere and Cali-
fornia boulevards to four lanes once development neared completion. The city hasn’t proposed any widening increases, yet, despite frequent heavy traffic, most notably on St. Lucie West Boulevard, Bremer said. The city’s traffic division keeps traffic and trip counts and will let staff know when a particular area passes a threshold, Bremer said. Up to this point, those thresholds haven’t been met, so road widening will wait until then, he said. “It’ll happen when it happens,” he said.

A case against Common Core
T
he federal government is constantly interfering with our lives. Can you name anything that is not taxed or regulated? This reach into our public school system is known as Common Core. Rolled out as being created by the National Governors Association (a Washington trade group) it has been rejected by many states that have refused to put this federal mandate into their classrooms. The effect Common Core is having on our children is devastating. New math, different forms of reading and reading materials are causing stress on our elementary school children. Common Core requires computer testing, which takes up about 10 weeks of every school year leaving 26 weeks for teaching. These high-stakes tests are also affecting our teachers and administrators. Find out what Common Core is doing to our children. The nationally recognized expert on Common Core Dr. Duke Pesta,

Take Back The Night supporters shine their lights during the third annual candlelight vigil, as survivors take back their voice and speak out against the sexual violence and pain they endured.

4th annual ‘Take Back the Night’ looks to shatter the silence and stop the violence ST. LUCIE COUNTY — At least one in every three women worldwide has been beaten, forced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime by a partner, relative, friend, stranger, employer and/or a colleague. Of these crimes, less than 50 percent are reported to the police. Almost 3 million men in the U.S. have been victims of sexual assault or rape. It’s time to make a change. Shatter the silence. Stop the violence. The Inner Truth Project’s fourth annual Take Back The Night will be held on Friday, Nov. 7, 7 p.m. – 10 p.m. in downtown Fort Pierce at the Riverwalk Center, 600 Indian River Drive. The community will come together for a march downtown, candlelight vigil and survivors will speak-out to take back their voice and shatter the silence against the pain they endured. Take Back The Night will include a poetry reading by local artist Heather Wells, self-defense demonstration by Jo Garcia and music from DJ T Boy Cooper. The march through downtown Fort Pierce will be led by the Indian River State College Girls Basketball Team and Youth volunteers directed by Olivia Ranieri. “Domestic violence, dating violence, relationship violence. These are all forms of ultimate bullying where one person exerts control over another. This kind of violence doesn’t repre-
sent power; it signifies weakness to the world,” said Mayor Linda Hudson, Fort Pierce. “Unmask violence by ending the silence. Physical, verbal and sexual abusers are cowards. Shedding light and speaking out on violence and abuse can lead to prevention.” While attending Take Back The Night, participants can visit community nonprofit tables for information from Children’s Services Council of St. Lucie County, PACE Center for Girls, SafeSpace and Suncoast Mental Health Center. The fourth annual Take Back The Night is open to the community. For more information, please contact (772) 200-4599, visit online InnerTruthProject.org, or like us on Facebook at Facebook.com/ InnerTruthProject. manager Traer Van Allen said. “This is the first time I think that we’ve had both of them come down in the same year, so it’s something to look forward to for the fans. I’m even excited, just being a fan of the game.” It’s no guarantee whether fans will see every star player during those games, given the nature of spring training baseball, Van Allen said. “It’s so hitor-miss. You always want to see guys like Prince Fielder, Bryce Harper, Justin Verlander and all the others, but it’s hard to say whether you’ll see them,” he said. “Some guys want to take it easy, other guys want to be in there every game. It just depends on the team and the player. “Even if you don’t get to see a team’s all stars, you’ll get to see important players who in the starting lineup each and every

The hi-flying perks of being a photojournalist TREASURE COAST — Outside our Florida community, autumn is acknowledged by apple picking, changing leaves and rotating the summer clothes for winter wear. Our version of autumn is signified by local fall festivals, slightly cooler temperatures and the engine sounds overhead from several days of practice and performances of the annual Stuart Air Show. Since 2003, I have been lucky enough to be included in the flights made by the participating pilots during Media Day on the Thursday leading up to the weekend. The concept is simple. Print media, television media and Internet media are invited to send their strongest-stomached on-air personalities, writers and photographers to capture some epic images to invite some hype to the show. In other words, this is like a Christmas present to me. My life experiences of flight are minimal at best. I have flown commercially several times and a small aircraft but once, back

fly in a precision four-plane arrangement. These planes at times fly so close to one another that if you were walking on a wing, you could just step over to the next plane. After assessing who their passengers are, they decide how much of their aerobatic maneuvers they will showcase. After my meeting with T-28 ‘Trojan’ retired U.S. Navy pilot Mick Thorstenson, he seemed happy to have been given free rein to fly in any direction and speed his little pilot heart wanted. Thorstenson asked if I had ever flown before, and like a sinner in a church confessional I blurted out that I was 10 for 10 in crash landings on a flight simulator I used to use. I crashed all 10 times. We started with what had become a very familiar lesson in safety precautions, with heavy emphasis on the word “shouldn’t” when saying “We shouldn’t have to use these.” Thorstenson helped strap me into the parachute harnesses. Thorstenson also shared the history of this Navy T-28, built in 1956 and how it is the absolute best of all the T-28 aircrafts flying today. (This would play heavily on me in just a few short minutes).

During all that sensation overload of piloting for the first time, I was taking some photos as well to document the experience. Thorstenson took the controls back for the landing, having recalled my perfect execution of crashing every time in an older simulator.
Before leaving, I thank my pilot took a few photos on the ground and he asked what simulator I had used. I told him it was on Atari in 1984. I think he may have thought it was something less arcade-like. Mitch Kloorfain is the chief photographer for Veteran Voice and Your Voice News & Views.

airport, and then he turns his attention to me. I had mentioned earlier that one of the images I wanted to capture would be something where the plane is inverted and I would have the ground on top and the sky below. He was quick to accommodate, and we cruised inverted for some time while I snapped a collection of images. Thorstenson righted the plane and trimmed the flaps to level us off and asked five words I may not soon forget. “Would you like to fly?” Silly, overworked pilot, I thought, I AM flying. Did he forget I was back here? Then it hit me. He said “Would you like to fly?” not, “Would you like to be flown?” “The control stick in front of you is all you need. The plane is yours,” he said. With that, I slowly moved the stick to the left and went left. Same thing happened on the right side. “That was great. Thanks for the opportunity,” I said though our headphone comm device. “You can roll it if you want,” he said, probably sensing I would want just a bit more. He wasn’t wrong. My next instructions were to bring us down to 3,500 feet and head toward the coast so we could come around and land. I looked at the display in front of me with 16 circular dials of instrumentation, only looking for the one they told Karen Black’s character in ‘Airport 1975’ to look for when she had to convert from flight attendant to pilot in order to land a Boeing 747 after the pilot had been injured. I found the altimeter. I gently pushed the

Contagious diseases: What Florida employers need to know FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
TREASURE COAST — The Ebola hemorrhagic virus has come into the spotlight recently due to an outbreak in Africa and few cases in the United States. Employers must be aware of potential liability when it comes to Ebola and other contagious diseases in the workplace. Employers may only ask current employees medical questions when there are concrete reasons to believe that the employee cannot perform the job or poses a risk to workplace safety due to a medical condition. FMLA considerations Employers with more than 50 employees must provide up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for an employee or her spouse, child or parent who have a “serious health condition.” Although there are so few cases of Ebola in the United States, it is likely to qualify for coverage under the FMLA. The CDC recommends removal of infected employees from the workplace during the disease’s incubation period (two-21 days) to prevent transmission. If an employee exhausts her FMLA leave time before recovering from the virus, then an employer may extend the time, but is not required to do so under the FMLA.

Hobbyists have remote fun with flying Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Ken Bridges of PGA Village is a retired cardiothoracic surgeon. Some years ago, when he was taking flying lessons, he came across a radio-controlled plane. “I said, “What is that? That’s neat; I want to do it.’” That was 34 years ago. Bridges found that flying those planes
was not as easy as he thought. “When I first started flying them, I crashed everything I put in the sky,” he said. “I said it was not for me. When you’re in an airplane, it’s part of your body. When the (radio-controlled) plane is coming at you, the controls are reversed; left and right are reversed. Down is up, and up is down.” Bridges persevered and 18 years ago, when he moved to the area, he joined Sundancers Radio Controlled Club, a group founded

in1988. Today, he is membership chairman of the group that now has 150 members. At least some of the group meet every day at a field at 7901 Germany Canal Road in Port St. Lucie that South Florida Water Management allows them to lease through the county. “We have 80 acres,” Bridges said. “We’ve dug a canal for boats and stocked it with fish for catch and release. We have boats, airplanes, helicopters, float planes and radio-controlled cars. It’s for radio-controlled anything. We have members from Jensen Beach, Stuart, Jupiter, Okeechobee and even Melbourne. We have families and children who come out to spend the day.” Beginners are welcome and training is available. Beginners can learn to fly their own planes or can rent them from the instructors. Club members with their own planes can get free flying lessons. Membership is $150 a year, but spouses and children under 19 of regular member can join for an additional $15 a family. Junior membership for those under 19 is available for $25. Members must also join the Academy of Model Aeronautics.
Bridges recommends that anyone interested in flying radio-controlled crafts get a flight simulator. That’s what got him back in. “They’re so realistic. Anyone who wants to fly should have a flight simulator,” he said. “They cost about $100 and plug into your computer. The graphics are so realistic. It’s the real thing. There’s even a transmitter that’s similar to the one we use. You spend so many hours learning hand-eye coordination. I had to crash 500-600 times. Pilots don’t make the best radio-controlled operators because they’re not in the plane. The group meets every day, although weekends are busiest. “A lot of the guys are retired and many flew (during their careers.) We have a lot of military planes, Technology has come such a long way. There’s every airplane you can imagine. There are helicopters with GPS that go up and come back right where they took off.” For more information about the Sundancers Radio Control Club, visit the website, www.sundancersrc.org or call Ken Bridges at (772) 201-5509.

Emergency food and shelter program funding available FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — St. Lucie County has been chosen to receive $156,639 in funding for emergency food and shelter programs. The selections were made by a national board that is chaired by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from American Red Cross; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; The Salvation Army; United Jewish Communities and United Way of America. The local board is chaired by Cris Adams, vice president of Community Impact for the United Way of St. Lucie County and is comprised of members representing the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, Mustard Seed Ministries, St. Lucie County Community Services, other community agencies and a former homeless person. This board will determine how these funds, and any additional funding that may become available, are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local nonprofits. The mission of the program is to prevent homelessness. The focus of the local board will continue to be rent and utilities with a secondary emphasis on food and meals. Under the terms of the grant from the national board, local agencies chosen to receive funds
must: (1) be private voluntary non-profits or units of government, (2) have an accounting system, (3) practice nondiscrimination, (4) have demonstrated the capacity to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs and (5) if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board. Qualifying agencies are urged to apply. No applications will be accepted from individuals. Public or private nonprofit agencies interested in applying for funds may download the application from the United Way website at: www.unitedwayslc. org. or contact Cris Adams (cris. adams@unitedwayslc.org) for an application. The deadline for applications to be received is Wednesday, Nov. 18, by 4p.m. All applicants must attend a mandatory meeting at noon on Monday, Nov. 24 at United Way of St. Lucie County, 4800 South U.S. Highway 1 in Fort Pierce. Submissions received after that date will not be accepted. The local board will meet shortly thereafter to determine a plan for this year’s local funding. This plan will be submitted to the national board for approval. Funding will be distributed to local recipient organizations after the local board’s plan has been reviewed by the national board. For more information on emergency food and shelter program funding, please call Cris Adams at (772) 464-5300 or visit www. unitedwayslc.org.
St. Lucie County seeks website feedback FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — St. Lucie County’s Office of Media Relations is beginning the process of redesigning the county’s website and is looking for user feedback. Residents and visitors are encouraged to take a few minutes to answer roughly 20 questions about St. Lucie County’s main website: www.stlucieco.gov. The survey is located on the homepage of the website or available directly at: http://stluciecounty.formstack.com/forms/ websitefeedback. The survey is quick and easy,
but will provide valuable feedback as the Office of Media Relations staff begins to redesign the current website for the Board of County Commissioners, which was last redesigned in 2006. The county is working with Vision Internet, a national company that specializes in government websites, to provide a new design and content management system for the county’s website. The new site, which is scheduled to be completed early next year, will feature a responsive design so that the site functions more efficiently on tablets and mobile devices.

Listen to the Natives with ecologist Chris Lockhart Nov. 8 at the Oxbow FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Florida plant life may not be able to talk, but it can tell you a lot about the habitat in which they live. Ecologist Chris Lockhart will lead participants on Saturday, Nov. 8, beginning at 10 a.m. on a naturalist hike through the Oxbow Eco-Center forest to identify native plant species and learn what they tell you about the surrounding environment. This is the second training in Oxbow’s Citizen Science Saturday Series, designed to help residents become St. Lucie County naturalists and grow their knowledge and appreciation of Florida’s unique environment. As you hike along the Oxbow trails you will notice three very different habitats — the hydric hammock, pine flatwoods and remnant scrub. Each supports distinctive plants, from grasses and ground cover, to flowering shrubs and to overstory plants that make up the canopy. Lockhart will aid in your understanding of the variety of plants found here, including the various oak tree species that truly reveal the natural history of the forest. Learning to identify native species can be challenging, but a little tutelage from an expert can make the process much easier. As a field ecologist and CEO of Habitat Specialists Inc., Lockhart is very familiar with native and invasive plant identification and understanding their relationships with various plant communities. Her interest in preserving
Florida’s natural communities is nurtured by actively participating with the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council, Florida Native Plant Society and the Lake Worth Lagoon Initiative. Lockhart is an instructor for the Florida Master Naturalist Program and is interested in the effects of climate change on Florida plant communities. She is a long-standing member of the Treasure Coast Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area, has assisted multi-agency inventories and monitoring and has contributed to the Early Detection/Rapid Response species list. Citizen Science Saturdays at the Oxbow is a monthly Naturalist Training Series that gives participants a chance to work and study with local specialists and experts on subjects ranging from restoration ecology and plant identification to herpetology and skull and tracking identification. Appropriate for ages 16 and older, the fee for this Plant ID workshop and hike is $10. The cost is waived for established Oxbow volunteers. Space is limited, so call and reserve your place today at (772) 785-5842 or send an email to oxbow@stlucieco.org. The Oxbow Eco-Center is located at 5400 N.E. St. James Drive, Port St. Lucie (across from the Publix Shopping Center). For more information, visit www. oxboweco.com. Situated on a 225-acre preserve on the North Fork of the St. Lucie River, the Oxbow offers a rare glimpse of “the real Florida” with nature trails, boardwalks, observation towers and an interactive environmental learning center.

“What would my life be like without music?” This is a question I often ask myself. Growing up, I tried several extra-curricular activities from soccer, to football, to basketball and finally swimming. None of them interested me. Then at 9 years old, I got an electric guitar for my birthday. This began my love for making music. I took lessons for about three years, and then I entered middle school. Due to a mistake on my school schedule, I was enrolled in band in the seventh grade. You see, I never signed up for band. With my parents’ encouragement, I stuck with it and decided to play the saxophone (since they did not need a guitarist). Little did I know that decision would change my life and my future. I’ve always struggled with academics due to a learning disability, and I’ve always been apprehensive about starting conversations because of stuttering. Music is a subject where I can excel. Playing the language of music, I never struggle with stuttering. As the years progressed, so did my love for jazz. By the end of eighth grade, my band director introduced me to James Archer, who began giving me private saxophone lessons.
Event subject to change without notice.

Jerry Block of Discount Office Furniture got into the holiday spirit early this year by making a $1000 donation to the Treasure Coast Food Bank. He had read the brochure from the food bank that indicated that for every dollar donated the food bank could provide 7 meals for a needy individual or family. He thought it would be great to be able to provide 7000 meals for local Treasure Coast residents. He also offered a challenge to other area business owners to make a donation to the food bank. “Nobody should have to ever go hungry, let alone during the holidays” Jerry said. “Let’s help the food bank get the job done” 14744

Get the most out of your marketing!
I’ve been taking lessons from him for three years now. This has been another life-changing experience, as Mr. Archer introduced me to local professional musicians, beginning with the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society. I remember sitting in as a freshman in high school, with Mr. Archer by my side. With my stomach in knots and my hands trembling, I thought to myself, “Will I be able to hang with the big boys?” That was three years ago! Since then, I’ve participated in several events through the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society, from playing with a student ensemble at the Saturday Morning Jazz Market, to playing for children at the Lincoln Park Community Center and then finally at the ARC in Fort Pierce. Now as the new student liaison for the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society, I would like to continue these opportunities to bring jazz music to the Treasure Coast. My dream is to introduce young people to the art and language of jazz. People of my generation just do not understand jazz. I want to en-

lighten them. Now, entering my senior year of high school I’ve played with a few local bands at various venues such as Crawdadd’ys, B-Merry Gastro Pub, Archie’s Seabreeze, Crossroads Tavern (in Jupiter), The Moorings Country Club, and Chillin’ The Most. The musicians who impacted me are the members of the Kenny Clarke quartet of the Treasure Coast. Every time I play with them at B-Merry Gastro Pub, I’m pushed beyond my limits, but only to make me better. Playing with these professionals gives me the motivation to improve my musical skills and the opportunity to connect with fellow musicians. With high school graduation quickly approaching, my goals and direction in life are aiming toward music conservatories such as Manhattan School of Music, Berklee College of Music, New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, and The Julliard School. The next chapter of my life is going to be that of a jazz musician. Austin Routten is the student liaison for the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society.
