Tragedy strikes in the sky Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer

PGA VILLAGE — The airspace between St. Lucie County and Jacksonville was familiar sky to Michael Huber, 60, a family friend said. The PGA Village resident would frequently pilot the 208-mile, hour-long flight to tote his daughter, Tess, 20, to and from the University of North Florida, where she was a student and golfer. Huber and his two daughters, Tess and Abigail, 17, died on Dec. 8 when the family’s twin engine, six-seat 1979 Cessna 310R crashed near Jacksonville Executive at Craig Airport. “That’s how he got Tess back and forth,” said Holly Taylor, director of the PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance. Taylor said she saw the three at the course the day before

the accident. “The three of them were very close and supported each other and were very proud of each other,” Taylor said. “Abbey would always fill me in with Tess at school and Tess would fill me in about Abbey and how much better her game was getting.” The three were members of the PGA Association since before Taylor began her tenure there five years ago, she said. The golf community has suffered a devastating blow, Taylor said. “I got emotional,” she said. “It’s very upsetting.” Abbey, Lincoln Park Academy’s top golfer, recently played in the South Florida PGA Junior Tour Championship where she won first place in her division. Tess, an LPA graduate, was the No. 1 player at the school during her days

PGA VILLAGE — For the second straight year, the sounds of Christmas carols filled the air in the PGA Village. The 90 singers weren’t professionals, but rather members of the community filled with holiday cheer brimming with excitement to help a good cause. The singing, laughter and charity were all part of the Mustard Seed Ministries Silver Bells Holiday Home Tour, held last week.

Giving community members paid $100 to attend four separate holiday parties in one night at different homes in the PGA Village. At each home, was food galore and live and silent auctions to benefit the nonprofit organization. Two large chartered buses transported the guests from house to house. Last year, the event garnered $20,000 for the cause, program director Stacy Malinowski said. “We needed a special event that

Knowledge key to healthy lifestyle Shelley Koppel Staff writer

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

ST. LUCIE WEST — For Charlie Tooch, group fitness and Pilates studio director at Gold’s Gym in St. Lucie West, exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, but it’s only one part. Her business, Brain Food Coach, was hired by Carlye Fabrikant, wellness manager for the St. Lucie County School District, to give healthy cooking demonstrations to faculty and staff. The program, funded by a grant, aims to make it easier for busy people to make healthy food choices. While Tooch has a background in exercise and is a certified personal trainer, she knows that nutrition is the fuel the body needs to perform at its best. “Nutrition is 99 percent of health,” she said. “You can only exercise so much, but you can eat healthy every day. The impact nutrition has on health is tremendous.” Tooch said that the typical Western diet is not conducive to good health. She also recognizes that finances and time are important factors in food choices. She has set several goals for the

meals she demonstrates. ‘They have to be quick, cheap and simple,” she said. “The top three challenges are that people say they can’t afford (to eat healthy,) don’t know how and don’t have time.” Tooch said that those in school, both staff and faculty, are caregivers and nurturers, often taking care of others before they take care of themselves. “I’m hoping what we get to address is spending a couple of minutes on themselves,” she said. “Getting into the kitchen is huge. Statistics show that kids’ success has to do with families and food time and people being connected to their food. I did a workshop with first graders and I asked where a certain food came from. They said, ‘Walmart.’ They didn’t know that food came from a tree.” Tooch said that some of this information used to be taught in home economics classes, but those rooms are often used for events or conferences now as home economics has disappeared from many curriculums. “The learning is not there,” Tooch said. “Even boiling water has become a foreign concept.” Tooch said that she and Fab-

Medical care in the west just days away Tradition Medical Center set for Dec. 18 opening Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer

TRADITION — After decades of waiting, residents in the western portion of the city finally have an acute care hospital to meet their emergency and long-term needs. On Dec. 18, Tradition Medical Center, an arm of Martin Health System, will open its doors to patients with the aim to provide “Hope at Every Turn” for Treasure Coast residents. “We think the hospital is long overdue here,” senior vice president Rob Lord said. “The residents of this community have been asking for a hospital for a long time. We’re so happy to be able to provide it.” Lord said the watery barrier blocking western residents from getting quick and exceptional care has also been abolished. “St. Lucie County has a geographic barrier that runs through the middle of it, the North Fork of the St. Lucie River, dividing eastern and west. Only Port St. Lucie Boulevard or Prima Vista Boulevard or St. Lucie West Boulevard

cross over that river,” Lord said. “Everybody (who’s) west of the North Fork of the St. Lucie River has some difficulty accessing acute care hospital service. This hospital will meet that need.” The six-floor, $135 million acute care facility, located on the Tradition Center for Innovation campus just west of I-95, features 90 private rooms to provide the utmost comfort to patients and their guests, hospital officials said. Upon entering the massive lobby, guests are greeted by contemporary decor and light Earth tones. If the community needs more space, the 201,184-square-foot hospital has the capability of expanding upward three floors to a 200- or 300-bed facility. “It’s less sterile and far more welcoming and warming. We also tried to make better accommodations for visitors and guests,” Lord said. “One of the unique features of this hospital is that if a loved one wants to spend the night with a patient in our facility, they can be here as long as it’s appropriate for the patient and we can do that without disrupting anybody else. And of course the rooms are private, so we should be able to do that very well.” Last week the hospital hosted a grand opening celebration which

OUR MISSION We are here to provide our readers with completely unbiased news coverage. Fun and entertaining features about the communities in which they live. LAKE CHARLES — Their seeds spread like wildfire, and red berries often spell out certain death for segments of well-manicured lawns and native plants they touch. The invasive Brazilian pepper tree, a common sight around town, also causes health issues to some in St. Lucie West and Tradition with sensitive sinuses and allergies. But for one St. Lucie West community, the blossoms from hell have been a blessing in disguise. For the past few years, the trees have provided a sound barrier from zooming cars on I-95 for homes located in the western portion of the gated community, particularly those on Munjack Circle. St. Lucie West Services District staffers removed a 200-yard stretch of the trees on the residential road, spurring complaints of noise and brightness from the highway, the district’s exotic plant removal foreman Gerard Rouse said. The removal process occurred between Oct. 2 and Nov. 27. “Lake Charles Homeowners Association came to us and

asked if we can cut that back, because they want to paint the wall,” Rouse said. “Well the complaints we’re having now after we cut down the pepper trees and the exotics that were behind the wall is that we took away that noise buffer,” Rouse said. Based on permitting requirements, the portion of exotics over the Lake Charles barrier on district property was scheduled for maintenance in the next several months, so Rouse had no other option but to perform a full extraction rather than just a trim to allow for the wall beautification project, he said. “We have a rotation of three and half to four years,” Rouse said. Another tract of approximately 200 yards needs digging up, but Rouse said the district is willing to wait until the Lake Charles Homeowners Association figures out a solution. “I agreed that we will only cut back pepper trees in the amount of buffer that they can put up and when they put up the other half of the buffer, we’ll cut back the remaining pepper trees, so that homeowners are not exposed to I-95,” Rouse said.

BELLS from page A1 was going to be something different, that everybody’s not doing,” Malinowski said. “And you know, we had friends within PGA that would love to do something.” The event was meant to be a one-time deal, but was such a wild success, the Silver Bell Holiday Home Tour jingled into St. Lucie West once again. “People actually came to us and offered to us, we would love to do it,” she said. “It’s a very lowkey commitment. It’s one hour in someone’s home.” “The community is amazing to us because they’re coming out just to support us tonight and pay $100 to ride a bus and look at people’s houses. But the donations that came were absolutely astronomical. I mean it was absolutely unbelievable what we did,” she added. “What a generous community we live in that understand what we do at Mustard Seed and understand how important that need is.” It was the organization’s creativity and reputation of generosity that spurred Dr. Spencer and Tricia Lee to host one of the evening’s stops. “My wife and I were looking for an organization to contribute to and I’ve heard some really good things about the Mustard Seed charities and the work they do,” Dr. Lee said. “And so when we were asked, we really didn’t have to think twice about it.” Each home was impeccably decorated for the holiday season and every host family welcomed guests as family. Andy and Nancy Passeri were the first stop. “I think once I grasped the sense of the mission, it was a no-brainer for me. Simply, I felt that the object of this mission and its goals, are not only noteworthy, but they are so crucial I think in our community,” Andy Passeri said. “And this is my small way to try to

emphasize that.” Hosts AnnMarie and Tony Napolitano echoed the same sentiment. Each guest received a complimentary copy of AnnMarie’s cookbook, ‘Heavenly Delights.’ Regular sales of the book benefit children with cancer, its author said. “We got a lot of excitement knowing that we could give a little bit of time to make a difference in other people’s lives. I’m amazed by the opportunity,” AnnMarie said. Hosts Paula and Roy Friedrich said they couldn’t think of a better bunch to open their home to. “Christmas is such a special time of year and Mustard Seed is one of our absolute favorite charities,” Paula Friedrich said. “They do so much immense good for St. Lucie County.” State Rep. Larry Lee Jr., D-Port St. Lucie, who lives in the PGA Village, attended the event to draw awareness about the wonderful work of Mustard Seed Ministries. “This is just a beautiful thing. It’s for a great cause and it’s so good to see so many people from different parts of the community come together for a great cause,” Lee said. “Mustard Seed does so many great things for our community and this is just the time of the year to be really good about giving.” Mustard Seed Ministries, which has offices in Port St. Lucie and Fort Pierce, is a coordinate of Christian churches of St. Lucie County. The organization strives to meet the spiritual and material needs of needy residents and make referrals to all available relief. Mustard Seed Ministries is an agency of The United Way of St. Lucie County. The organization has an emergency food pantry and gives out clothing and furniture to those who can’t afford it. Mustard Seed also offers gas, rent and utilities assistance. For more information, call (772) 465-6021.

Melissa Bujeda, public information officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, said Huber called in to the Jacksonville tower to notify air traffic control that he couldn’t see the runway. The visibility at the time was approximately 3 miles, Bujeda said during a press conference Sun-

day night. Huber was told to fly around, Bujeda said. Emergency calls reporting a plane crash in a retention pond in the Sutton Lake subdivision began to trickle in at 6:20 p.m., Bujeda said. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash. A preliminary accident notice posted on the FAA’s website states the crash site was two miles away from the executive airport at Craig. Data on flightware.com show the plane was traveling at an altitude of 5,000 feet before going down. It was traveling at a speed of 201 knots before the speed and alti-

tude began to rapidly decline. The aircraft was registered to Huber’s corporation, Hubaire located on Midway Road in Fort Pierce. Huber, a dentist, practiced at his own office at the same address. “We’re not making any comments right now,” a receptionist at Huber’s office said. “We’re grieving.” Abigail’s death is the second LPA athlete in a span of two months. Student and baseball player Christian Medina, 16, died on Oct. 27 from injuries he sustained during an Oct. 23 car accident while enroute to school. Tess Huber sent her condolences to the Medina family in a Facebook post dated Oct. 23 from the Jacksonville area. “Prayers go out to the LPA baseball player’s families impacted from the fatal car accident today,” the post read. “A good lesson can be learned from this: always drive the speed limit and wear a seatbelt!” In an emailed message, St. Lucie County Schools Superintendent Genelle Yost said LPA was thinking about the family. “Students and staff at LPA, as well as others throughout the county, are honoring the memory of Abigail and Tess,” Yost wrote. “We are keeping their mother in our thoughts.” Roberta Huber, mother of Abi-

gail and Tess, is a speech and language pathologist within the school district, Yost said. Abigail Mike Huber was being recruited by Stetson University, University of North Florida and other colleges, Yost said. Family friend Joe Mutter and owner of Mutter’s Hearing Center in St. Lucie West, said Huber was an experienced pilot and good person. The two took an elementary school trip to northern Florida years ago. “We flew together to St. Augustine,” Mutter said. “The trip was good. Mike was a good guy and a good pilot.” And his daughters always came first, Mutter said. “He ran his life and practice around the girls,” Mutter said. Abigail’s LPA golf coach, Matt Walters, said the school is in mourning. Walters called the shining star on the course a “tremendously gifted golfer,” as he recalled how tight-knit the Huber family was. “The three of them shared two loves: each other and golf.”

Peck said. “If people don’t get out and tip and toss (yard items), we will have this happen again,” Peck said. “We do not want to have any more cases.” Dengue fever is a disease transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito, not person to person. In the Western Hemisphere, the Aedes aegypti mosquito is the main transmitter of dengue viruses. In some cases, the Aedes albopictus mosquito has also transmitted the disease. Both of these mosquitos are found in large numbers in Martin and St. Lucie counties. Locally acquired dengue is rare in the U.S. Prior to the 22, the last case was contracted by a resident of Port Salerno in August 2011. There have been no previous locally acquired cases of dengue in St. Lucie County, officials said. Nearly all dengue cases reported in the 48 continental states were acquired elsewhere by travelers or immigrants, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s website. Most dengue cases in U.S. citizens occur in those inhabitants of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Samoa and Guam, which are endemic for the virus, the website states. The 22 cases acquired in Martin County are the nation’s first this year, health officials said. Miami-Dade County has had one confirmed case in recent months. In 2009, surveys suggested that 5 percent of Key West residents were infected with dengue fever. The next year, 66 cases of locally acquired dengue associated with Key West were reported in Florida with onset dates ranging from March 17 to Nov. 30, according to the Florida Department of Health’s website. Symptoms usually appear three to 14 days after the bite of an infected mosquito and include sudden onset of fever, severe head-

TREASURE COAST — Dengue fever’s tight grip on the Treasure Coast has finally loosened. The Florida Department of Health in Martin County announced an end last week to a months-long dengue fever advisory in Rio and Jensen Beach. The advisory was issued in August and put residents on high alert of the mosquito-borne illness that infected a total of 22 on the Treasure Coast. Cases were from out-of-state, St. Lucie, Martin and Palm Beach counties, said Karlette Peck, health officer for the Florida Department of Health in Martin County. The onset of symptoms ranged from May to September, Peck said. “The risk has significantly decreased. It doesn’t mean it’s gone, but if you get bit by a mosquito, it’s less likely that mosquito is infected with the dengue virus,” Peck said. The significant decrease in mosquito breeding grounds contributed to the advisory’s cancellation, Peck said. News reports on the historic outbreak, as well as the proactivity of Martin County Mosquito Control helped educate area residents on how to avoid an infectious bite, in turn lowering the pest’s population and great threat of infection, Peck said. Peck is still urging all Treasure Coast residents to remain vigilant. Although dengue is more common during the warm weather, Peck said residents cannot let their guards down. To prevent dengue, residents should tip and toss any outside yard objects that collect water, where the mosquitos breed. Covering skin with clothing and using mosquito repellant on exposed skin will lessen the chance of infection,

TREASURE COAST — Two local entrepreneurs with innovative ideas and start-up companies pitched their business plans and products to eight distinguished business leaders at a “Shark Tank” event sponsored by the Indian River State College Business Incubation program earlier this month. The event was held at the Brown Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship located on the college’s main campus. The room was filled to capacity with more than 60 individuals, local business people, investors, and other entrepreneurs attending. “The ‘Shark Tank’ event is designed to provide real-world, candid advice and feedback to entrepreneurs with the goal of improving their chances of success,” said Tom Kindred, IRSC Virtual Incubator Coordinator. “We achieved all of our objectives with this first Shark Tank event.” The presenting entrepreneurs are current clients of the IRSC Business Incubator, which is based at the IRSC main campus.

Incubator clients have access to business development services including assistance in obtaining funding, marketing, business coaching links to lawyers and accountants, networking and educational seminars. They have involved everyone from principals to support staff. Tooch said she can relate to her audience as a single mom with a child with food allergies. “For the workshops, I use five ingredients you can get at Walmart,” she said. “That in-

cludes sweet potatoes, beans and corn. You have to be able to afford the food. That’s the bottom line. If you don’t have experience, you don’t know where to start.” Tooch is under no illusions that there is a quick fix to the problem of poor diet. “Mine is an uphill battle, but I’m so passionate about it,” she said. “I am billed as the Brain Food Coach, but that is incorrect.

My goal is to recruit Brain Food Coaches. I don’t tell people what they’re not supposed to do, but what they are supposed to do in a convenient, accessible way. Everyone that gets these lessons has earned Brain Food Coach status. For them to give of their time is an opportunity not to be missed.” Charlie Tooch is group fitness director at Gold’s Gym, 250 N.W. Peacock Blvd., St. Lucie West. She is available to make presentations to organizations other than schools. For more information, call (772) 528-4232 or send an email to charlie@brainfoodcoach.com. the halls of the emergency room and visit patients for neurological check-ups in a matter of seconds. A physician or nurse can tell the robot to go to any room in the wing and VITA will get there without bumping into walls or people, thanks to groundbreaking sensors, said Gina Eugenard-Arty, clinical coordinator of emergency services. The treating physician can appear on the robot’s screen and do a full neurological assessment from anywhere in the world. Vita’s innovative camera also zeros in on pupil changes of the patients to alert physicians of a neurological emergency. “Time is brain, so instead of waiting for the doctor now to physically be here, he’ll be there in a few minutes, so Vita will allow us to save a lot of lives,” Eugenard-Arty said. Having an emergency room in Tradition will also save more lives by cutting back on transport time. Officials expect to treat an estimated 30,000 per year in the emergency room alone. “St. Lucie County is very, very fortunate to have an exceptional fire rescue system,” Lord said. “They will tell you the quicker you get the patients into an emergency room and into the hands of an emergency medicine physician and the wonderful caregivers in the emergency department, the more lives we’ll be able to save.” The hospital also boasts 14 private rooms in its maternal child department, all designed with the family in mind. Each suite has all of the amenities any mother can ask for. The spacious rooms provide an area where mothers and their entire family can welcome their newest arrivals. If a cesarean birth is needed,

surgical suites are nearby on the same floor. Infants with special needs after birth have access to a six-room Level II neonatal intensive care unit. Each room is private. Port St. Lucie resident Jada Pemberton said had the medical center been open for the birth of her infant son, Silas, two months ago, it would have been the obvious choice. “They have the 14 rooms and that was nice, where you labor and recover, the baby is with you at all times. He or she doesn’t get taken away,” Pemberton said. “The couch turns into a bed, they have a rocker for the mom, they have a breast pump in there, they have the Whirlpool tub, like a jacuzzi tub, a flat screen TV, a refrigerator, it’s like a hotel room in there.” The hospital also offers a plethora of other services, including diagnostic imaging, including MRI and CT scanning, laboratory services, generalized and specialized surgery, GI and endoscopy care, inpatient oncology and clinical research. The facility’s location next to VGTI Florida, Mann Research Center and Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies is prime real-estate to perform topnotch clinical research, Lord said. “This makes that a unique opportunity to not only serve the residents of the community, but to serve a bigger constituency, truly anybody who might benefit from some of the research and cures we think can come out of what the wonderful scientists are doing,” Lord said. Tradition Medical Center is located at 10000 S.W. Innovation Way in Tradition. For more information, visit www. martinhealth.org/tradition or call (772) 287-5200.

PEPPER from page A6 Association manager Diana Forbering said she’s working diligently to find an appropriate native replacement for the exotics behind the wall. The wall is scheduled to receive grout work, pressure cleaning and a fresh coat of paint as soon as fair weather hits, Forbering added. “The district said it would try to work with us and allow a right of way to use (that land) to put a buffer,” she said. “I have to put the plan together to present to the district.” She hopes to have the proposal finalized in the next few weeks. Forbearing, who said she understands residents’ frustration, is also working with landscaping experts to find native vegetation to replace the portion of freestanding pepper trees. The perfect plant is one that grows rapidly, densely and requires minimal maintenance, Forbering said. The new plants could cost thousands, Forbering predicts. “We have some funds available for capital improvements,” she said. “We would probably consid-

DENGUE from page A9 ache, eye pain, muscle and joint pain and bleeding, according to the Florida Department of Health. Quick recognition and management of symptoms is effective at ensuring the condition doesn’t worsen. There is no treatment for dengue fever. Beginning on Sept. 13, The Florida Department of Health in Martin County conducted a 10day survey. During the survey, teams from the Florida Department of Health, consisting of health workers from surrounding counties, visited approximately 2,000 randomly selected addresses in the Rio and Jensen Beach area. In all, approximately 360 samples were

er that a capital improvement. I’ll have to talk to the treasurer and see.” The district is required by law to completely extract exotic plants from district-owned wetlands, wetland buffers and upland pine preserves and must perform removal every few years. Brazilian pepper trees in particular, have been a thorn in the district’s side for decades, board members and staffers have said. Brazilian pepper trees belong to a vegetation family that includes poison oak and poison ivy. There are over 700,000 acres in Florida infested with the tree, which originates from Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. Brazilian pepper trees produce a dense canopy that shade out all other plants and provides a very poor habitat for native species, eventually damaging or killing them, according to the website of the Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants, an arm of the University of Florida. People sensitive to poison oak and ivy may also be allergic to Brazilian pepper trees and experience respiratory problems when the tree blooms in September, the website states.

collected. Forty of the samples were returned as inconclusive and are undergoing further testing. The survey discovered an additional dengue fever case, Peck said. The Florida Department of Health is also analyzing information acquired from a community questionnaire, collected during the dengue survey. A report on the information gathered from the questionnaire is expected at the end of March. Those results will give insight into who is susceptible to dengue by examining habits and daily routines, Peck said. When those results are in, health officials will have a clear picture of how far dengue has spread on the Treasure Coast.

Morningside Writers Group still going strong FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

PORT ST. LUCIE — You think you always wanted to write a book? Or maybe you’d like tell your own unique life story in a memoir? If you know where to look, you’ll find that there are clusters of dedicated writers right here on Florida’s Treasure Coast, most of whom regularly gather in small groups to review each other’s works-in-progress. This mutual review process is not the usual case for newsprint writers who must deal with deadlines, or for personal bloggers, but it is a common practice among creative writers all over the country. Some write short fiction stories and novels. Others are working on memoirs. Still others are non-fiction writers, essayists or budding poets. Most all have a common goals: write more effectively and have “their book” published someday. One of the oldest and bestknown major ones locally is the group hosted by the Morningside Library in Port St. Lucie, formed in 1996 by writer Dan Griffin with the purpose of assisting local writers in developing their works. It has been meeting weekly for more 17 years. When Griffin retired, author Sunny Serafino became the group’s moderator. Two years years later, Serafino relocated to Mount Dora. Gene Hull became the group’s moderator and has led the group for the past nine years, during which time membership has grown from about a dozen writers to more than 50. One reason for its success is that getting regular feedback from other writers is a valuable tool for anyone engaged in the writing process. In addition, the Morningside group has main-

tained an open, broad critique format. How it works: Whether a novice beginner or published author, all writers are asked to bring a few pages of their work and provide a copy for each member in attendance. Attendees average about 10 in the summer and 20 in the winter season. The work is read aloud by the writer, then discussed by the group. Everyone is encouraged to offer helpful suggestions and to make written notations on the copy they are provided. Comments are discussed. The writer receives all copies back and can study the written comments during the week. The group’s format is not the in-depth critique offered by some smaller writing groups. Its broad-critique format has been successful from the beginning. The principal benefit comes from the fact the whole group can offer succinct comments on any aspect of the writing without getting consumed in minutia. This instant feedback provides the writer with a consensus critique. Often this is just the encouragement needed by those who may be unsure about the direction their writing is taking. Every Thursday morning year ‘round (with holiday exceptions) the Morningside Writers Group meets its weekly three-hour session, 9 a.m.–noon. All writers are welcome and there is no charge. Attendance in not mandatory. Currently the group includes several published writers, novelists, essayists, and poetry aficionados, as well as novices. For more information, call the Morningside Library at (772) 3375632 or Gene Hull at (772) 4646838.

HCG has not been demonstrated to be effective adjunctive therapy in the treatment of obesity. There is substantial evidence that it increases weight loss beyond that resulting from caloric restriction, that it causes a more attractive or “normal” distribution of fat, or that it decreases the hunger and discomfort associated with calorie-restricted diets.

ST. LUCIE WEST — Workforce Solutions of the Treasure Coast aimed to get at least 30 veterans employed in November. “We had 108 veterans get employment in November,” Jose Tabar, local veterans employment representative for Workforce, said. Or about 360 percent better than hoped for. Tabar said things are definitely looking up for veterans seeking employment. One of the local veterans who found work through Workforce last month is 59-year-old Michael Carrano, Stuart. He got a job with Lloyd Johnson Electric. “They were looking to hire and vet and that helped me get the job,” Carrano said. “I was laid off a couple months ago from my other company and it’s really hard to get a job in your 50s.” Lloyd Johnson said he wanted to hire a veteran from the get go. “I had heard the advertisement on the radio about hiring vets,” he said. “I said, ‘That’s a good idea.’” Workforce Solutions is a state-supported not-for-profit that helps job seekers and employers in Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin and Okeechobee counties. It is one of 24 Workforce Development boards in the state. It has a veterans room at its St. Lucie West office, 584 N.W. University Blvd., and other veterans programs. Tabar said the local employment picture has been getting brighter for veterans lately for several reasons. He said there have been several national and state initiatives in the public and private sectors that have raised awareness among large and small businesses about hiring veterans, such as the radio ad Johnson mentioned. Additionally, Tabar said Workforce has cultivated more relationships with local employers, and word is spreading. “That’s the big thing I’m seeing — employers, they’re engaging us,” Tabar said. “It’s not just us going out there beating the pavement (to talk to employers). They’re calling us and saying, ‘I want to hire a vet.’” Gov. Rick Scott, a Navy veteran, declared November as “Hire a Veteran Month” throughout the state to build on veterans-em-

ployment momentum. Jessica Sims, press secretary at the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, said at least about 25,000 veterans have found work through the department’s efforts this year. “The State Veterans Employment Program also assisted Regional Workforce Boards with the placement of more than 600 veterans, on average, each week during 2013, totaling 25,459 employed veterans since January 1, 2013,” she said in an email response to queries. One reason veterans employment is improving is because the job market is better. On Friday, Nov. 22, the Department of Economic Opportunity released its state employment report for October. The department was unable to produce an employment report the previous month, because of the 16-day federal government shutdown. “The state’s October (unemployment) rate was the lowest since August 2008 when it was also 6.7 percent,” the report reads. And only one county had double-digit unemployment: Hendry. The national unemployment rate in October was 7.3 percent, seasonally adjusted. Florida has been below the national average for eight straight months. There’s wide disagreement about what the veterans unemployment rate is. What’s not disputed is that veterans — particularly young veterans — are more likely to be unemployed, or underemployed, than their non-veteran counterparts. Federal labor statisticians generally put veterans unemployment at about 10 percent. However, the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, and some other veterans organizations, hold that it’s closer to 15 percent. So, why the high unemployment? Numerous reasons are cited for veterans unemployment. What’s generally at the center of those explanations are the all-important resume and interview. “A lot of veterans can’t translate their skills into the civilian world,” Tabar said in a previous interview. “They don’t realize in the outside world, you get paid for those skills.” In short, many veterans are inept at speaking civilian job skills. Conversely, a number of hiring

LUCIE COUNTY — Earlier at the Florida Workforce Development Summit, before peers from around the state, longtime staff member, Caren Belowch, won the inaugural Florida Workforce Chairs Alliance Lighthouse Award. “Caren has brought her heart to the workplace for the past 27 years,” vice president of operations, Glenda Harden, said. “Caren always does whatever needs to be done to get the project/task done timely and efficiently. She takes ownership in her work with a positive attitude and solves problems with little or no oversight.” Recipients of the Lighthouse Award serve as a beacon for their co-workers and not necessarily work directly with the public — their co-workers may be their primary customers. They may be employees of either providers or regional board. Belowch began her career in workforce as a counselor assistant in 1986. Through promotions of secretary, administrative secretary and office manager, she is now the office manager for Workforce Solutions’ (Region 20) administrative offices and the facilities manager for the 14 locations in the region. “Caren is hardworking, caring and loyal; a team player who supports everyone in our organization, regardless of task and responsibility,” vice president of administration, Brian Bauer, said. “She notices ‘gaps’ and makes arrangements to cover them, often

covering for other staff without being asked. Caren has demonstrated throughout the years that she can Caren Belowch always be counted on and as a result has become a pillar of Workforce Solutions.” Workforce Solutions is a private, nonprofit, Florida corporation with a board of directors consisting of private business, economic development and education representatives, community and state agencies, and elected officials. Members of the board represent the diversity of businesses, organizations and trades that operate in the Research Coast Region, including Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee, and St. Lucie counties. Chartered by the state of Florida to create and manage a workforce development service delivery system responsive to the needs of businesses and job seekers, Workforce Solutions offers award-winning complimentary programs and partnerships recognized locally, statewide, and nationally. “Peggy cared for our mom at home during a long illness so Mom could be with the family she loved. But in the final months when Mom’s condition got worse, her doctor recommended Treasure Coast Hospice. They provided expert care for Mom, supported our caregiving and guided the whole family. This was the relief we needed to enjoy time with Mom.”

JOBS from page A18 managers don’t speak military. In other words, they don’t understand how military experiences translate to job skills. To bridge that divide, veterans advocates such as Bob Ravener, Dollar General’s executive vice president and the chief people officer for Dollar General, have launched employment fair series. Earlier this year, Ravener worked with Scott to declare May 10 as

YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER

Gift of entertainment makes holiday bright Italian pianist Francesco Attesti returns to the Treasure Coast with performances at the Lyric Theatre in Stuart Jan. 5 and St. Bernadette Church in Port St. Lucie Jan. 6. He will perform works by Grieg and Gershwin, accompanied by the Academy Orchestra.

PORT ST. LUCIE — One of the best holiday gifts is the gift of live entertainment. You don’t have to worry about size or color and tickets can usually be purchased online in a matter of minutes. For events taking place after the New Year, it is a gift that gives the recipient something to look forward to. One of the nice things about many of the events listed is that the prices are far below what you’d pay in big cities. The St. Bernadette Concert Series still has several great events coming up. The nice thing is that Tom Bold, the creator and director of the series, is willing to mix and match events and put together a personalized package of concerts. For January, Francesco Attesti, an internationally-respected pianist, will return to St. Bernadette for the fourth time. On Jan. 6, he will be performing with a full orchestra and will play a piano concerto by Grieg and Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” The Treasure Coast Youth Symphony returns to the series on Jan. 20 and then the mood shifts, with the first-ever country-flavored concert. Pear, the duo made up of Denis and Lynae Dufresne from Alberta, Canada, will perform Jan. 31. In 2013, they were named Group of the Year by the

FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Fort Pierce Magnet School of the Arts is proud to present once again its annual Holiday Spectacular event, a performing arts concert that will delight all family members. This event takes center stage at the school’s auditorium on Thursday, December 19, 2013. Doors open to the public at 6:30 p.m. and the performance starts at 7:00 p.m. The ticket price is $2.00 per person. Admission is free for children under 5 years of age. The 2013 Holiday Spectacular will include a variety of presentations to display the various performing arts programs offered at the school, such as band, chorus, dance and steel drums. Students participating in the visual arts program are also responsible for the creative scenery that serves as a backdrop to the performers. This year Holiday Spectacular will include celebrations of various

world cultures. Fort Pierce Magnet School of the Arts is the only k-8th grade school in Saint Lucie County offering various performing arts and visual arts programs that complement the school’s academic curriculum. The integration of the arts into the academic content enhances students’ academic learning and appreciation of the arts. In addition, students’ participation in school performances allows them to develop self-confidence and poise for future performances opportunities throughout the community. Fort Pierce Magnet School of the Arts was founded in 1914. Its doors have remained open to educate children for almost a century. Through the 2013 Holiday Spectacular, students and faculty members want to thank the community for supporting FPMSA for all these years. For event and ticket information, contact the school office at (772) 467-4278.

Motown Christmas Spectacular comes to Port St. Lucie Civic Center FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

TREASURE COAST — It’s been a few years since the music of The Temptations, The Miracles and The Capitols dominated the air waves, but the music of Motown lives on in movies, commercials and in a new holiday show that hits the Port St. Lucie Civic Center on Dec. 15. The show promises to be jam-packed with all the hallmarks of Motown — impeccable harmonies, dazzling choreography, flashy outfits and those instantly-recognizable grooves that everyone knows and loves. “The Temptations were always one of my favorites,” says the event’s promoter, Al Cicchese, who’s promoted several successful shows at the Center. “They were the quintessential Motown group because of their look, their sound and their hits - ‘My Girl’, ‘Get Ready’, ‘Ain’t Too Proud to Beg’ – it just doesn’t get any better than that.” This “Motown Christmas Spectacular” features an all-star

line-up of vocalists and musicians assembled from the ranks of the Capitols and the Miracles and former members of the Temptations. The performers, collectively known as The Motown Experience, have each paid their dues performing with Motown legends on stages around the world. Group member Dave Finley still tours with The Miracles, who topped the charts with classics like “Ooh Baby, Baby” and “Tears of a Clown.” This year marks Dave’s 35th anniversary with the Miracles. Another, George Wilson, is a 20-year veteran of The Capitols, who created a dance sensation in the ‘60s with their big hit “Cool Jerk.” “The performers in the Motown Experience know exactly how to re-create the magic of the groups that made those timeless classics,” Cicchese said. On Dec. 15, audiences will hear all the Motor City hits they know and love, as well as holiday classics like “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” and “Silent Night”

The orginal Temptations from 1968. The ‘Motown Christmas Spectacular’ will include former members of the Temptations, as well as from the Capitols and the Miracles. performed in that inimitable Motown style. Accompanying the group, which is flying in from Detroit for this exclusive area

appearance, will be a 12-piece orchestra of live strings and

MOTOWN from page B13 brass, adding yet another level of excitement to those classic arrangements. “This show will be an unforgettable holiday celebration for audiences of all ages,” Cicchese said. “I think the children of the ‘50s and ‘60s will relish returning to a time when they knew every word to every song — and we’ve purposely kept the ticket prices low so they can bring their kids and grandkids, too!”

In the spirit of giving, the evening’s festivities will also serve as a collection drive for Toys for Tots. Attendees are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped gift for the organization. The “Motown Christmas Spectacular” will be performed at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m. Tickets are priced at $29 and $39 and can be purchased on line at www.psltix.com or by calling ShowClix at 1-888-718-4253.
