Nutcracker candy cane City of Port St. Lucie may join state in Digital Domain lawsuit Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER

bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PORT ST. LUCIE — The city stands good chance to cash in on more than $50 million it lost from the Digital Domain bankruptcy. That’s what a Fort Lauderdale-based lawyer is saying at least. Bill Scherer, who’s representing the state in its $20 million lawsuit against former Digital Domain executives, said he wants Port St. Lucie on his side. “The lawsuit is moving rapidly, and we don’t want the train to leave the station without the city having the opportunity to join.” The state’s case is strong on its own, but Scherer said the city’s backing will help substantially. “It makes it a lot bigger. The damages are a lot more. The city suffered $50 million in damages, probably, to the state’s $20 million, so I’d rather have a $70

million case than a $20 million case.” To cash in, Scherer said he modified his original proposal, which gave the city the same terms as the state. Scherer said the new offer is to represent the city at no up front cost, though the city’s attorneys are still working on the final paperwork to get a deal done. The council chose Dec. 8 to wait on a final decision so city staff could meet with Scherer’s people to get details figured out. Among those details is making the legal paperwork match what Scherer said he was proposing. Scherer said he was offering a contingency contract that would require the city to pay only if a settlement was reached, though the deal council had in front of it was one that still charged the city for monthly costs, city attorney Pam Booker said. Scherer said the document

St. Lucie West Service District Supervisor Salvatore Mancuso was pronounced dead at 10:08 a.m. Dec. 12, police said. Two days prior, Mancuso suffered a yet-to-be determined medical emergency while driving his car and ended up in a lake across from Hurricane Grill & Wings

along Northwest Bethany Drive in St. Lucie West. Three men rescued Mancuso from his silver Lincoln Town Car at lunchtime after a woman ran to Hurricane Grill yelling for help. Alton Brieske, a 21-year-old premed student at Florida Atlantic University who plans to be a sur-

geon, was outside the restaurant eating lunch when the woman ran over. “I saw a break in the bushes, and I assumed somebody had gone and drove into the lake,” said Brieske, who is visiting home

Lake Forest group wants to trade cookies for cancer treatment STAFF WRITER

bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com

ST. LUCIE WEST — A group of about 20 ladies from the Lake Forest community aren’t ashamed to ask you for a few dollars. For the past 10 years, the Lake Forest Relay for Life team has out-raised all St. Lucie County Relay teams, getting more than $10,000 each year for the American Cancer Society to fund treatment and research. Relay For Life fundraising takes place year-round, but the actual relays are day-long events, nationwide, in which team members take turns walking around a track. Oftentimes, people sponsor members for however long they walk. Last year the whole organization raised more than $400 million. The team has several ways to raise money. One of the most popular methods, at least among non-members, seems to be food

The cookies, homemade by the members, went for $8 per pound. “It was a great turnout,” team member Pam Milazzo said. Team captain Barbara Monge said she initially joined the team 12 years ago, wanting to give back because she got assistance while undergoing cancer treatment years ago. “They were there for me, and I wanted to be there for them,” Monge said. Many of the members, notably Milazzo, put in a lot of hours asking for donations from business owners, as well, Monge said. “We have a wonderful group of people who want to help and who care,” Monge said. So long, Sal, and thank you for your service, all of it S

ome days, this job sucks. Last Wednesday, I was sitting in the newsroom, reading copy at my computer. Reporter Brandon Zeris was on the other side of the desk at his own computer, when I heard him say, “Sal Mancuso … where do I know that name from?” I answered without looking up. “He’s a supervisor on the St. Lucie West Services District Board. You know, the little guy who comes in here all the time. ” “Well,” Brandon said, eyes fixed on his computer screen: “He apparently drove his car into a pond this afternoon in St. Lucie West.” I hastily went to my email inbox. Former Your Voice reporter Nicole Rodriguez had already forwarded the police report, with a little note: “This is Sal, my boyfriend :( ” Brandon went into action, tracking down a number to reach the young man who smashed out the back window of Sal’s rapidly sinking Lincoln Town Car and pulled him to shore, giving him CPR and restoring his pulse as fire-rescue crews arrived. As cell phone video emerged of the rescue the next day, the story went viral, with most of the world’s major news organizations carrying it. As we gathered information for our own story, we waited anx-

One of the three young men asked Brandon to keep him apprised of Sal’s progress so he could meet him when he was released from the hospital. But it was not to be. I’m writing this with a heavy heart, wishing that Sal would come walking through the door of our office again, just as he did for the first time two years ago. The whole world now knows the names of the courageous young men who pulled a 92-year-old man out of

Salvatore Mancuso was our very first visitor. I knew he was a feisty one the minute he strode into the lobby with a copy of the first edition of Your Voice in his hand. “Thank GOD we finally have our own newspaper in St. Lucie West,” he said. “It’s about time.” He introduced himself and told me we needed to start covering the St. Lucie West Services District meetings. He was on the board. As he reached into his wallet for a donation to help us offset our publishing expenses, I noticed an old black-and-white photo of a young man. “Who’s that?” I asked. The 90-year-old grinned. “That’s me,” he said. “Handsome, huh?” By this time, most of the office staff had come up to the lobby to see who was making all the noise. Sal noticed our Veteran Voice newspaper lying on the counter and told us he was a veteran, having enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942. My eyes lit up. “Would you mind being interviewed for a story?” I asked. I doubt, knowing Sal, that he would have declined, but I wasn’t taking no for an answer, anyway. I whipped out my phone and started taking pictures of him and the photos in his wallet. We did a profile piece on him, which mentioned his four years in the military and his subsequent positions with Grumman

during FAU’s winter break. Veteran marine Mike Markisello was waiting on his meal inside and heard the commotion, too. “I said, ‘I know what I’m going to do. I’m an ex-Marine. We’re going in there,’” Markisello said. Markisello, a former first-class swimmer in the Marines, and Brieske, a former John Carroll High School swimmer, were the perfect pair to help Mancuso. Those two, along with Nikolas Guevara, concocted a quick plan. “I had seen on TV that if you are going to go into a car that’s in water, you don’t open a door because it will sink, so we tried to get behind it and float it back,” Brieske said. But the front passenger window was open. Markisello said the car began taking on water, so they yelled for someone to bring them a hammer. “I knew we had to do something different,” Brieske said. Luckily enough, someone nearby had one in his car and tossed it to them. Markisello and Guevara kept the car steady, and Brieske shattered the left rear passenger window and carried Mancuso out. The water was up to Mancuso’s neck at that point. Mancuso appeared to be unconscious, so Brieske performed CPR on him for about a minute until paramedics arrived and took Mancuso to Tradition Medical Center. Brieske and Markisello were quick to downplay the “hero” moniker, but their story has been covered by national and international news sources, including the Washington Post, Daily Mail and New York Daily News.

“People are throwing around the ‘hero’ word a lot,” Markisello said. “I was in Afghanistan for two combat tours, and I knew heroes. They’re dead. This guy needed some help, and that’s what we did.” Medical examiners are still determining what the cause of death was, Port St. Lucie Police Master Sgt. Frank Sabol said. Mancuso was an elected St. Lucie West Services District supervisor off and on since 1995, making sure the district did everything in its power to represent residents to the best of its ability. Prior to that, he retired as a Chief Quality Assurance Division agent at Grumman Aircraft for the Department of Defense. District chairman Harvey Cutler said Mancuso was known for poring over agenda items to make sure every item was perfect. “He said ‘I played the game to say, ‘I gotcha.’ His Department of Defense job was to see that contract specifications were up to snuff. I wouldn’t want him looking over my shoulder,” Cutler said. “He would pore over agenda items word by word. He did his homework more than any other person on the board.” When an issue he felt passionately about failed to pass, Cutler said Mancuso would do everything he could to persuade others and make them reconsider. “I used to call Sal the (conscience) of the board because he stood up for the public,” Cutler said. “Sal was Sal. He was a winner. He was a dedicated, conscientious, pain in the butt.” A memorial service will be held at noon Dec. 20 at the Sons of Italy, 765 S.W. Dalton Circle, Port St. Lucie.

and Sikorsky Aircraft. He and his wife, Jo, had lived in St. Lucie West since 1989, when Sal retired, but Sal couldn’t stay retired and ran for election to the St. Lucie West Services District Board. And up until last week, at 92, he was still going strong, attending every meeting and being quite vocal about how things should be done. The meetings were often contentious, and Sal would be right in the thick of things. He’d stopped in a number of times over the last two years, sometimes to chastise our coverage (what we’d reported wasn’t what HE thought we should have focused on). Sometimes he just wanted to make sure we hadn’t forgotten the District. “I didn’t see your girl at the last meeting,” he said once. The fact that she’d been on vacation was no excuse. But he thought Nicole hung the moon, and she and I often joked that her “boyfriend” had just called and warned us he was on his way to the office to speak with her about something. We later interviewed him and his wife about their 64-year-marriage for a Valentine’s Day story in February 2013. “I proposed to her with a note on the windshield of her car,” he told us. “She an-

swered me back with a note that said ‘OK.’” The quote that painted him best, though, was at the end of his profile piece. He was 90 at the time, and not up for re-election for another four years. “I should be retired, but I don’t want to retire. My hobby is what I’m doing, and I love it. God willing, I’ll be around in 2016. I’m going to make it. I work hard, and I put my heart and soul into everything I do. For a high school grad, I’m really proud of what I’ve accomplished.” Unfortunately, God had other plans. Brandon had the job of telling Alton Brieske, the pre-med student, and Michael Markisello, the veteran U.S. Marine, two of the three rescuers, that Sal didn’t make it. We were unable to locate the third man, Nikolas Guevara. “It really sucks that he died. It feels like it was all for nothing now,” Michael said, visibly shaken. It DOES suck, Michael. But a good deed is never all for nothing. Keep doing what you’re doing. As a mother, a fellow veteran and a friend of Sal’s, I am proud of all of you. Relay For Life helps fund Hope Lodge, an organization that helps fund patient stays while they are receiving experimental treatment. They gave him a temporary home away from home, Milazzo said. “It was amazing for us to know the money went there, and it was nice of him to say Relay helped him,” she said. “I think most of us are either a survivor or know someone who’s been affected by it,” Milazzo said, noting that she’s lost seven people on her husband’s side of the family to cancer. ST. LUCIE WEST — One of the first family-run small businesses in St. Lucie West, Jay’s Fine Jewelry, is celebrating a proud 20 years of calling the region home. “It’s progress. We’re growing with the community,” Jay’s Fine Jewelry owner Jay Garcia said. “We were the first jewelry store here with Publix, Kmart and maybe two other stores before everything started taking off,” Garcia said when he first opened his store, he thought the area was going to grow a lot. “My friends and colleagues said it was a big mistake. In an industry where trends change with the temperature, Garcia is doing his best to offer customers what’s in demand. “We’re successful because we keep up with trends,” he said. To celebrate his store’s 20th anniversary, he’s offering discounts on some of his more popular pieces: 45 percent off retail on Movado watches, Citizen watches starting at $69, Seiko watches at 50 percent off, and all other jewelry from 35 to 50 percent off retail. Garcia said the anniversary sale is a special one, and combined with Christmas deals, brings prices to some of the lowest levels he’s offered in years. Garcia has had his hand in nearly every facet of the jewelry industry in his 30 years experience, so his shop is more than a series of display cases. “We have a large repair business that also keeps us going,” he said. Garcia employs a certified Rolex watch technician along with two other repair techs. Garcia said he has 30 years’ experience repairing jewelry, too. “I mostly let them handle it, but

If there’s not one penny cost to the city, then fine. “These things can be drawn out for years, and you don’t know if you’re going to get a return on it,” Bremer said. Mayor Greg Oravec said the lawsuit appeared to be an election issue, but the new terms, if they are true, are enticing. “It seems to me if the attorney representing the state is willing to do it on a contingency basis, they must feel pretty good about the case,” he said. UNITED WAY from page A14 • No registration or activation required • Discounts applied automatically United Way chapters in all 50 states have helped to save more than $700 million on prescriptions in their communities. FamilyWize cards can be found locally at the United Way office located at 4800 South U.S Highway 1 in Fort Pierce. People with Internet access can go to www. unitedwayslc.org or to www. FamilyWize.org/rx to print a card, request a card to be mailed or download the mobile app. There are also wonderful resources on the website such as the drug pricing look up tool and the pharmacy finder. Almost every family in the United States today faces health or financial challenges. FamilyWize provides prescription assistance and information to help everyone be healthy, physically and financially. In the spring of 2005, Dan and Susan Barnes heard of families in the Lehigh Valley area who were having difficulty buying the medicine they needed because of the high cost of prescription drugs. They responded by distributing a free prescription drug savings card through family and health centers in the schools in Bethlehem.

The family centers were supported by the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley who then asked 25 of its partner agencies to help distribute the cards to individuals and families in need throughout the area. Almost immediately, Dan and Susan received requests from other United Ways to provide this free assistance in other communities. As a result, they established the FamilyWize Community Service Partnership by inviting a group of local and national companies to join together to provide this free assistance. Currently almost 1000 participating United Ways in all 50 states coordinate the local distribution of the free FamilyWize prescription drug savings cards. Over $700 million in savings has been realized from the use of FamilyWize prescription drug discount cards, and a new goal was established to reach $1 billion in savings by the end of 2015. For more information, visit www.FamilyWize.org. United Way of St. Lucie County raises funds and leverages resources to have real, measurable, impact on our community in the areas of education, income and health. A memorable evening with a Medal of Honor recipient PRESIDENT , UNITED VETERANS OF ST. LUCIE COUNTY

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Roy Brewer (DAV Post 113 chaplain) and I recently attended a dinner in Orlando, where Hershel “Woody” Williams was guest speaker. At 90 years of age, he still has a bellowing voice and a handshake that could crush rocks. Certainly a product of the greatest generation. Woody was awarded the (Congressional) Medal of Honor for his actions on Iwo Jima in February 1945. He was a young Marine tasked to take out Japanese machine gun positions dug into reinforced pill boxes armed with a flame thrower and a .45 caliber pistol.

Also assigned to Woody was a four-man Marine security team to provide covering fire for him and to keep him alive. Over the course of four hours of bloody combat, Woody was able to destroy seven Japanese pillboxes; however, all four Marines responsible for keeping Woody alive were killed. Whenever Woody starts his speeches, he holds his Medal of Honor up, and tells the audience that the medal belongs to the four Marines who died keeping him alive, and that he is the caretaker of the medal in honor of them. Truly a very humble man. It was an honor to meet and have dinner with this icon of the United States Marine Corps, an honor which I will pass on to my children and grandchildren. Semper Fidelis.

Florida Department of Veterans Affairs visits St. Lucie County for upcoming veterans nursing home Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TRADITION — Steve Murray, communications director at the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs, was in town on Friday, Dec. 12. He was speaking with United Veterans of St. Lucie County and others about the upcoming state veterans nursing home, the state’s seventh. “We hope to have groundbreaking by late 2015,” he said at a press gaggle. He added, “We hope to have shovels in the ground by this time next year.” Construction will take about two years. When done, the home on Tradition Parkway will have 120 to 128 single-occupancy rooms, and generate about $7 million a year in wages among nearly 200 workers, Murray said. Addition-

ally, the home will be purchasing many needed supplies locally, generating additional economic activity. But topping of the mind of many locals is this — what’ll its name be? Florida’s veterans homes are named after dead Medal of Honor recipients who had ties to the host communities. Three names were submitted for consideration. One, Murray said, stands out. “(Sgt. Ardie Ray Copas) was just about the unanimous choice of everyone involved,” he said at the gaggle. Copas grew up in Fort Pierce, where he joined the Army. He’s one of the Valor 24 Medal of Honor recipients. In 2002 Congress mandated a review of records to discover if there were Jew-

ish, Hispanic and black service members wrongfully passed over for the Medal of Honor due to possible discrimination. After a laborious, decade-long search, Pentagon researchers found 24 that they strongly believed would have received the Medal of Honor much sooner under other circumstances. President Barack Obama presented the 24 in one of the largest Medal of Honor ceremonies ever. That was on March 18. Copas died on May 12, 1970, while serving as a machinegunner in Company C, 1st Battalion (Mechanized), 5th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division during combat near Ph Romeas Hek, Cambodia. A large force attacked the unit suddenly that morning. Copas’ armored car was hit, seriously injuring four. Although also injured, Copas remounted the burning vehicle to suppress belligerents as others evacuated wounded comrades to safety. Copas died in the battle. Some believe that Copas was passed over for a Medal of Honor not just because he was Hispan-

ic, but because of where he died: Cambodia. Roger Sperl traveled with a grandchild from Fairbanks, Alaska, to attend Copas’ headstone monument dedication in November at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Fort Pierce. He was at the battle, but didn’t know Copas. Sperl was in Company B. “We came to their assistance,” Sperl said in an interview at the dedication. “I won’t say ‘rescue.’ They were doing a good job.” Sperl said that Copas’ Medal of Honor helps wipe a stain from all who entered Cambodia under orders. Sperl said politicians and the military brass still recoil at acknowledging battles on the Cambodian side of the border. He believes that’s one reason Copas was passed over for the Medal of Honor before. “We were 15 miles in, and (President Richard) Nixon said we would only go 10 miles in,” Sperl said. Murray said Copas’ daughter, Shyrell Herrera, sent a letter to Gov. Rick Scott asking that he support efforts to name the veterans nursing home for her father.

The governor and Florida Cabinet will vote on naming the facility as early as the next regularly-scheduled meeting, Jan. 13. The cabinet is made up of the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, Commissioner of Agriculture, Adam Putnam, and Chief Financial Officer, Jeff Atwater. The Tradition Land Company donated about 28 acres to St. Lucie County to bolster its bid to get the next home. Murray said that the land was a gem, largely due to surrounding wetlands that won’t ever be developed. He said that helps assure the home will always have a serene feel, but be close to needed infrastructure, such as hospitals and hotels for visiting family. The closest state veterans home to the Treasure Coast is the Alexander “Sandy” Nininger Veterans’ Nursing Home, 8401 W. Cypress Drive, Pembroke Pines. The next closest is the Emory L. Bennett State Veterans’ Nursing Home, 1920 Mason Ave., Daytona Beach. Bennett was built in 1993. Nininger in 2001. Murray said the last home was built in 2010. That was the Clyde E. There’s also a state veterans assisted living facility is in Lake City. Murray said the FDVA has the needed money for its share to go forward with building a state veterans nursing home, because of changes the legislature made to its trust funds last session. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Dr. S. Darrell Lee stepped in to help a 14-year-boy after he was bitten in the face by an American bulldog mix. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band is one of two spectacular new shows just added to the Sunrise Theatre’s already star-studded 2014/15 season. Back by popular demand, “One Night of Queen” returns to the Sunrise stage. Tickets go on sale to members Monday, Dec.15 at 10 a.m.before they go on sale to the general public on Dec. 22. Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band of 25 years, Steve Lukather, Richard Page, Gregg Rolie, Todd Rundgren, Gregg Bissonette and Warren Ham take the Sunrise Theatre stage for one night that you don’t want to miss on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. Since beginning his career with The Beatles in the 1960s, Ringo has been one of the world’s brightest musical luminaries. He has enjoyed a successful, dynamic solo career as a singer, songwriter, drummer, collaborator, and actor. Drawing inspiration from classic blues, soul, country, honky-tonk and rock ‘n’ roll, he continues to play an important recording, touring, and unofficial mentoring role in modern music. Ringo’s music has always emanated from his warmth, humor and exceptional skill, manifesting in the songs we know and love: “With A Little Help From My Friends,” “Don’t Pass Me By,”

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Former local resident and author Wendy Wolff will be on hand at the Inner Truth Project for a book discussion and signing on Sunday, Dec. 21, at 4 p.m. The Inner Truth Project is located at 2190 Reserve Park Trace, No. 13, Port St. Lucie. Wolff’s first book, “The Letter Writing Project,” released on July 21, was Amazon’s No. 1 Best Seller in the e-book Kindle Store in October. Since the project, she wrote letters to friends, children, husbands, teachers, cousins, neighbors and anyone she could think of. Some she has mailed. And some letters are still sitting in her “to be tossed” pile. “The Letter Writing Project” helped her peel back the layers and figure out what is important in life. Wolff has found out through letter writing what she loves and what she doesn’t love. Some letters she will never have any addresses for, yet she still wrote the letter. With most of her letters, Wolff eliminated the
