Joe Mutter and his niece Tammy Shearer-Carpenter 1966

WE’VE BEEN A TEAM FOR NEARLY 50 YEARS Joe and Tammy grew up together in the small boarder town of Bluefield W. Va. In the early days Tammy and Joe were inseparable, growing up in the same house with Joe always keeping a watchful eye on his younger niece, who was really more like a sister to him. Celebrating birthdays and holidays together for many years. The two became like one, knowing what the other was thinking or about to say before they even said it. Joe would help Tammy with her school projects and Tammy would help Joe find his lost books or toys or help him wash his bike. They were a team then much like they are today. Now, Tammy helps Joe with most every aspect of the Hearing Center. Greeting clients upon arrival with her sparkling personality, working with clients on every aspect of their hearing aids.

Joe Mutter and his patient care coordinator /Tammy Shearer-Carpenter

OUR GOAL QUITE SIMPLY PUT, “BETTER HEARING FOR OUR CLIENTS” After 22 years in Law Enforcement Joe decided to refocus his career path. Joe knew he would need to be involved in helping people and searched for a new career that would allow him to move in that direction. Joe’s brother in law worked in the hearing healthcare field and after some considerable research Joe decided to move forward in the hearing healthcare field. After Joe completed his training and schooling he ended his highly decorated career in Law Enforcement and retired from the St. Lucie County Sheriff ’s Office. Joe was licensed in 2002 by the State of Florida as a Hearing Aid Specialist and opened his first practice in St. Lucie West in 2003 and today, continues to help people as he has done his entire professional career. Tammy, in her career as a professional care giver, had seen far too many times the heartbreak of hearing loss. How the loss would impact not just the patient but the loved ones around them as well. Today and for the past 11 years Joe and Tammy are giving back the gift of hearing to friends and neighbors from around the Treasure Coast.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — In 2009, a crew of firefighters for the St. Lucie County Fire District responded to a fire alarm at a school. There was no fire, but firefighter Fred Barbera noticed that a child had holes in his shoes. Barbera and a colleague went out and bought the child shoes and socks, but Barbera wondered if they could do more to help other kids. He approached Catherine Chaney, who handled of the community relations for the fire district. “I approached the fire chief (Ron Parrish) and he said, ‘Let’s do it,’” Chaney said. “We figured we could buy 200 pairs. We went to the Early Learning Coalition of St. Lucie County and asked them to identify kids who needed shoes.” The group called its effort “L’il Feet,” and teamed up with the Roundtable of St. Lucie County, a nonprofit organization, to collect donations. DID YOU KNOW. . . . ? It was twenty three years ago when Lorraine Walter opened her first Parent-Teacher store in the “North Stuart Plaza” next to Fred Aster Dance Studio. She wanted to have, “at home” educational learning resources for her son Matthew who was three and knew she needed help to launch him into education. Teachers and Parents alike were looking for learning supplies and materials for children ages pre-school through eighth grade and shopped her stores in Stuart and Fort Pierce. Today she has consolidated her two stores into one and is now located in Port St. Lucie and an on-line catalog offering nearly ten thousand items that can be picked up locally saving S&H fees.

Helping People Living with autism Succeed has help spectrum disorder: for adults with autism an inside view Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TREASURE COAST — Imagine being able to talk in detail about neutron stars, but being inept at seeing when listeners are bored. Being capable of comprehending statistical data and turning it into usable market forecasts, but unable to add two single-digit numbers if there’s a clock ticking in the room. Being able to describe how nutrients metabolize, but unable to make a lunch. How would you get along in the world? Pam Christofori, vice president of behavioral health at Stuart’s Helping People Succeed, said too often high-functioning autistic adults answer that question by cloistering in their childhood homes. She said adults with autism spectrum disorder are usually highly intelligent, but too frequently that does little to help them build productive lives. The reasons for that are complex and rooted in the three areas autism affects: sensory processing, social skills and executive functioning. “They’re getting lost,” she said. “They’re ending up in their bedrooms playing video games, or on the Internet.”

Helping People Succeed, HPS, recently started a life-transitioning program for autistic adults. Christofori said the program is 12 hours a week and the cost is based on a means-tested sliding scale from $0 to $36 an hour. “We just opened Dec. 5 and we have five clients,” she said. “Right now, we’re working on getting people in and the word out.” Christofori added, “Right now we have two guys who are 26 and 29. The program is open to those 18 and older.” All five live in Martin and St. Lucie counties, and none received HPS’s services when they were minors. The 26-year-old was only recently diagnosed with autism, although, Christofori said, the family suspected it for years. In addition to starting the adult services, the agency is looking for state, or grant, funding to start diagnostic services for children, Suzy Hutcheson, CEO, said. “Families have to go as far away as Miami and Orlando to get a diagnosis to get any services,” Hutcheson said. “You can get a diagnosis from a variety of different doctors, but to get a comprehensive evaluation to give you an idea of what that child needs, you need a full-scale evalua-

this. Stuart-based Helping People Succeed is working on two projects. One is up and running: an adult transitional service to help those with autism function as adults. With high-functioning autism, a 25-year-old can have the intellect of an astrophysics professor, the emotions and social savvy of a middle-schooler, and the environmental sensitivity of an infant. Additionally, Helping People Succeed — which serves Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties — is working on starting up diagnostic services on the Treasure Coast that can help autistic children get detected, evaluated and the right services. All autism isn’t equal. It’s a very individualized condition. And, in my case, a very personal one. I hope my story helps you understand why Helping People Succeed’s efforts are important to children of on the Treasure Coast. “You have Asperger syndrome,” the psychiatrist told me in his book-lined office. “Very rare.”

During his tenure with us, he was a generous mentor to many business owners and he made a difference in the lives of all those he touched.” When Bryan Gardner, of Fort Pierce started his company, MicroTech Systems, he met McKenzie and they became close friends. “I met him and we took to one another. He understood relationships in the community and how important that was,” Gardner said. McKenzie was well known for his work ethic, often working seven days a week, logging more than 60 hours. “He supported so many worthy causes with not just his time, but financially as well. In fact he did not take a salary for much of his time at the foundation,” she said.

Jobs report makes for a positive community present Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TREASURE COAST — Some folks might have popped the corks a little early this year. “Wow! Merry Christmas,” Odaly Victorio, communications coordinator for CareerSource Research Coast, said when she looked at the latest state jobs report. On Friday, Dec. 19, the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity released its last monthly employment report of the year. The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.8 percent in November, taking the state under 6 percent for the first time since May, 2008. “It’s nice,” Tim Dougher, executive director of the Business Development Board of Martin County, said. “It wasn’t very long ago we were talking about 8 and 9 percent. It’s refreshing to see that number come down.” The state’s unemployment rate started 2014 at 6.1 percent. By October it finally dipped to 6 per-

cent. The state had been slightly above the national average for a few months, but in November was identical with the nation. In November, the not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the CareerSource Research Coast region — St. Lucie, Martin, Indian River and Okeechobee counties — was 6.4 percent, a 1.8 percent drop over the previous year. Martin County turned in the best employment performance for the area in November with a 5.7 percent not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate. St. Lucie was a percentage point higher, 6.7 percent. In October, Martin had a not seasonally adjusted rate of 6 percent, also the lowest in the region for that month. St. Lucie was at 7.1 percent in October. The Port St. Lucie Metropolitan Statistical Area, MSA, — St. Lucie and Martin counties — dropped from 6.7 percent in October to 6.4 percent in November. The area had about 131,700 jobs in November, up about 1,700 over the previous month.

October to May is typically the best employment period for the Treasure Coast, due to its tourist season. However, while the area gained in six industries, it lost about 500 jobs over the year in leisure and hospitality. That was the only industry that lost jobs. “Having broken into the sixes is reason to celebrate, but there are still almost 18,000 people in (the CareerSource Research Coast area) who are unemployed,” Victorio said. The unemployment rate is calculated using a variety of methods. Among them are telephone interviews with workers. Those that are able to work and report not having jobs, but looking for employment in the previous 30 days are counted as unemployed. Discouraged workers — those who are able to work and want jobs, but have not sought employment in the previous 30 days — are not counted in the unemployment figure. Many call this “shadow unemployment,” and it’s inherently difficult to track due to variations for why people don’t seek jobs.

would have allowed them to place signs directing people toward the home. “Quite frankly, they polluted the streets with 600 campaign signs during the election. I wanted 12,” Salveson said. Salveson maintained that he should not have to move his display to a new venue to please the council. “It’s mind-boggling. It’s my stuff, it’s my home, and those are all of my decorations. I’m not going to put them up in a public building,” he said. Salveson said he started a petition to give to the city. So far, there are more than 15,000 signatures to support next year’s Christmas House. “Everyone volunteers in this house. I don’t understand their issue. They said it doesn’t belong in a neighborhood, but the neighbors want it,” he said. On the first night, there was complaint from a neighbor’s visiting daughter about limited parking along the street and there being too much noise, Salveson said. The woman called police but later recanted her statements when she learned what was going on. “It’s none of the city’s business. It’s with people helping people. We’re paying it forward,” Salveson said. Councilwoman Michelle Berger said she witnessed the event and said it was concerning, being the first night. “The applicant was told very directly that this is not a function that is supposed to happen in a residential zoning,” she said. Salveson said he intends on keeping the tradition going. Each year, Christmas House Charities ends the 18-day event by donating toys. “It’s my birthday, and I love doing this. Instead of getting presents, I want to give.”

The organizers decided that the best way to distribute shoes was to have a “Shop Day.” They partnered with Payless Shoes in St. Lucie West and Fort Pierce. “We have ‘Shop Days’ where children come in with parents or guardians and make selections,” Chaney said. “They have $20 gift cards. It’s been great. The children enjoy it and it gets crazy at Payless. We have brought a fire truck and things they’re interested in. We get great comments from the parents.” By the second year, other organizations had signed on and the August Shop Day, chosen so kids would have new shoes for school, distributed 300 pairs, using discounts from Payless to increase buying power. PGA resident and local businessman Larry Lee, now a state representative, committed to a fundraising concert that raised $1,455. Lee sits on the Li’l Feet board. By the third year, two separate Shop Days were organized to make it easier for parents. Shoes are intended for infants to children up to 8 years old. The major fundraising event for L’il Feet is a Boot Auction. There have been three so far. “We teamed up with Art Mundo in Fort Pierce,” Chaney said. “They take old boots and trans-

Jan. 5. At that time, the board could choose to nominate someone right there. One route is to solicit resident interest and interview potential candidates, as if it were a regular job opening. Every member of the public would be open for consideration. There won’t likely be a special election for the normally elected seat, Pickle said. “It would be whoever shows interest in it,” he said. “Business is still early on as far as catching everybody up on what happened, so I’m not sure what route they’ll want to go,” Pickle said. A more likely option is a board-appointed replacement, Pickle said. Everett Child, who just ended his service as a supervisor this year, said he would like to be considered for Mancuso’s seat, Pickle said. Child would likely be the best replacement, after choosing not to run in the past election, Pickle said. Just re-elected supervisor Gregg Ney took over Child’s seat

following the November general election. “(Mancuso and Child) liked each other quite a bit, and Everett had worked with the district for quite some time,” Pickle said. It’s going to be difficult to replace Mancuso’s personality, though, District chair Harvey Cutler said. Mancuso was always pushing himself to better the district, sometimes making his own safety secondary, Cutler said. On one occasion, he climbed the sewer plant catwalk to view a problem, which caused staff to put new rules in place. “His life was this district,” Cutler said. “He had a closet full of all the agenda packets in his home.” Pickle agreed, saying Mancuso did a lot of good for the community. “He liked to make sure that things ran to the way the rules were set up. The board always called him “point of order Sal.” He was always proud of that,” he said. ““We’ll miss the history he had with the District that he had.”

Here’s the thing — I didn’t know I was doing it. When the environmental and emotional stress combined and hit a certain level, something inside me switched and I became inexplicably self-injurious. I later learned there’s a name for it: the autistic meltdown. I had these autistic meltdowns in childhood when my Mom kept yelling at and touching me, but they seemed to stop in my mid-teens when I was separated from her. But there I was one freezing, snowy night in an emergency room with head trauma. The emergency doctor directed me get psychiatric services. Over several weeks a psychiatrist had me take multitudes of written exams. Many asked me to rate myself against “most people.” I argued that I couldn’t rate myself against most people, since the world population was approaching six billion and I had experience with only a few hundred. I told the doctor that there were cultural variables of behavioral norms I couldn’t ac-

count for either. So, how in the world did the authors of these exams propose that I rate myself against “most people?” I now know that this literalism and rigid thinking are part of high-functioning autism and they were likely were the final straws that led to the psychiatrist’s declaration of Asperger’s. These days the World Health Organization and American Psychiatric Association place the pervasive developmental disorder that strongly inhibits emotional and social growth onto the autism spectrum. Unfortunately, the psychiatrist didn’t tell me what Asperger syndrome was. He didn’t tell me about my hyper-sensitivity to sounds, touch, smells. He didn’t tell me about how social development was impeded, leaving me unable to understand basic non-verbal cues. In the lack of information, I thought I was average, that everybody experienced things much as I did. Whatever it was, I remember thinking, “Asperger” and “syndrome” had really bad rings; I just figured the doctor was using fancy language because he could and didn’t think about it. The doctor never referred me to any

AUTISM from page A6 tion.” Hutcheson said that Helping People Succeed has a leg up in starting the proposed new autism-detection program: a building for housing those services. “We have the space,” she said. “We have an office. What we’re looking for is a year’s worth of (operation) dollars.” Autism spectrum disorder is a broad category within pervasive developmental disorders, according to the “Fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,” published by the American Psychiatric Association. On one end of the spectrum, there are non-communicative autistics, those unable to verbally communicate. On the other, there are high-functioning autistics. Most of them can be verbose about favorite subjects, but struggle with routine conversation, small talk, because they can’t read non-verbal cues very well. While the effects of autism vary widely, some things are common. For example, most autistics — even intelligent, high-functioning ones — have noticeable deficits in executive function, the ability to plan and manage small and large tasks, from cooking meals

to buying homes. Christofori said autistics tend to compensate for that by trying to keep things the same. “The inability to organize, people get stuck in rigidity,” she said. “With that executive function, that rigidity really interferes with your ability to interpret what’s happening around you.” She said this often translates to autistic high-school students who have the grades to go to college shunning it instead. They feel illequipped to handle change and the unfamiliar. Autistics also have in common sensory issues. “Noises that we pay no attention to, make their spines tingle,” Christofori said. “Particular decibels of sound and (wavelengths). We have a young man who, if it goes above a certain pitch, he cringes and has to leave the room.” Christofori said the adult transitioning services helps clients identify how autism affects them and come up with solutions, along with teaching life-management skills, such as budgeting. The ultimate aim is to get the autistic adults in the workforce. She said that very often autistics go through lifetimes of losing jobs over easily solvable issues, because they fail to discuss them

She said a minority are autistic. “We’re just getting started,” Hutcherson said. “At most, we serve 75 to 100. This is a brand new effort on our part.” However, Hutcheson said that only recently has there been

their city,” Port St. Lucie Police Sgt. Charlie Lumpkin said. The women posted an online ad stating, “not just one but two sexy ladies waiting to spend time with you!!” according to the affidavit. After the three met at the hotel, they agreed on a price, and then detectives arrested them. The sting was a small part a larger investigation that spanned three months, starting on Sept. 15, Lumpkin said at a press conference Dec. 16. Port St. Lucie’s 10 detectives led the investigations and arrested 56 people and seized 10 guns, two cars, 2.1 pounds of marijuana, 285 pills, 13 grams of heroin, 1.9 grams of cocaine and $16,284 on 11 search warrants, Master Sgt. Frank Sabol said. Police started the annual operation three years ago to close out the year with a spree of roundups to start the new year fresh, Lumpkin said. “We came up with the idea to close out as many cases as we can, make as many arrests, seize as much property as we can,” he said. “And we decided ‘let’s put a name on it.’” Much of the investigative legwork was responding to citizens who complained they were fed up with drugs being in their com-

munities, Lumpkin said. “That’s probably our biggest asset out there is citizens getting involved in their neighborhoods and their communities, not wanting people to do their dirty deeds next door,” he said. Lumpkin said he didn’t believe any of the drugs were being moved to Port St. Lucie from other areas. Detectives also seized any type of property they could connect to drug money, including vehicle rims, guns, Xbox consoles, televisions and pricy basketball shoes. Suspects are first questioned as to how they were able to afford certain items, and, if they don’t have the type of income or proof to support those items, the property is often seized. Lumpkin said he could only recall a few instances when suspects challenged the seizure and got the items back. “Not only do we lock them up here in the city, we also take away their property,” Lumpkin said. “If there’s a way we can make that nexus between their illegal dealings and their property they have, we’re going to take it.” Lumpkin said the department uses the money to support its training and operations and donates whatever they can to those who need it.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — “We’ll drink a cup of kindness, then for auld lang syne,” are the lyrics we all sing as the ball drops and Father Time is ushered out by the New Year’s Baby. Auld lang syne translates loosely to ‘times gone by,’ and reminds us that friends and memories from the past won’t be forgotten. As professional musicians, many of the members of the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society have helped thousands of New Year’s revelers celebrate the end of the old and ring in the hopes and dreams that come with each New Year. If you stop and think about it, there’s hardly a celebration ever that isn’t punctuated by music. There’s something about music that touches us all so deeply and viscerally that just a few notes of a certain song can transport us back to another time in our lives or bring a lump of emotion to the base of our throat. Music can soothe, inspire, motivate, agitate, excite, or cause us to fall in love, and it can intensify any emotion. Children who are taught to play musical instruments fare better academically, especially in studies like math and science, and studies have shown that musical training physically helps develop the left side of the brain — that’s the part that’s known for processing language. They also learn standards and how to take responsibility for mistakes, and they learn self-discipline, the importance of practice, and teamwork. In short, learning about music helps you learn about life. That’s something we’ve strongly believed at the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society for 19 years, and it’s why we work hard all year long to provide music for the Treasure Coast and raise money for scholarships for promising young musicians all throughout St. Lucie, Martin, and Indian River counties. As volunteers and professional musicians, we believe in the power of music and the importance of passing along a legacy of music to students. That’s why you’ll find volunteers from the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society working all year long, donating their time, talent, and treasure to help ensure that there are always plenty of terrific opportunities for music here on the Treasure Coast. It’s also why we encourage individuals to put a small dona-

The History of New Years Celebration

The celebration of the new year on January 1st is a relatively new phenomenon. The earliest recording of a new year celebration is believed to have been in Mesopotamia, c. 2000 B.C. and was celebrated around the time of the vernal equinox, in mid-March. A variety of other dates tied to the seasons were also used by various ancient cultures. The Egyptians, Phoenicians, and Persians began their new year with the fall equinox, and the Greeks celebrated it on the winter solstice. Early Roman Calendar: March 1st Rings in the New Year

January Joins the Calendar

The first time the new year was celebrated on January 1st was in Rome in 153 B.C. (In fact, the month of January did not even exist until around 700 B.C., when the second king of Rome, Numa Pontilius, added the months of January and February.) The new year was moved from March to January because that was the beginning of the civil year, the month that the two newly elected Roman consuls—the highest officials in the Roman republic—began their one-year tenure. But this new year date was not always strictly and widely observed, and the new year was still sometimes celebrated on March 1.

Julian Calendar: January 1st Officially Instituted as the New Year

In 46 B.C. Julius Caesar introduced a new, solar-based calendar that was a vast improvement on the ancient Roman calendar, which was a lunar system that had become wildly inaccurate over the years. The Julian calendar decreed that the new year would occur with January 1, and within the Roman world, January 1 became the consistently observed start of the new year.

Middle Ages: January 1st Abolished

In medieval Europe, however, the celebrations accompanying the new year were considered pagan and unchristian like, and in 567 the Council of Tours abolished January 1 as the beginning of the year. At various times and in various places throughout medieval Christian Europe, the new year was celebrated on Dec. 25, the birth of Jesus; March 1; March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation; and Easter.

Gregorian Calendar: January 1st Restored

In 1582, the Gregorian calendar reform restored January 1 as new year’s day. Although most Catholic countries adopted the Gregorian calendar almost immediately, it was only gradually adopted among Protestant countries. The British, for example, did not adopt the reformed calendar until 1752. Until then, the British Empire —and their American colonies— still celebrated the new year in March.

The early Roman calendar designated March 1 as the new year. The calendar had just ten months, beginning with March. That the new year once began with the month of March is still reflected in some of the names of the months. September through December, our ninth through twelfth months, were originally positioned as the seventh through tenth months (septem is Latin for “seven,” octo is “eight,” novem is “nine,” and decem is “ten.”

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — It’s the 1960s and a bachelor named Bernard is living a dream life. He has an apartment in Paris and three fiancées. They are all, in the language of the day, air stewardesses. One works for TWA, one for Alitalia and one for Lufthansa. Their schedules make his life idyllic, as only one is in Paris at a time. All goes well until a visiting friend from America and a speedier Boeing jet make Bernard’s life a whole lot harder to manage. That’s the bare-bones plot of Marc Camoletti’s farce, “Boeing Boeing,” which will be presented at Indian River State College Jan. 15-17. The play, which was written in French and translated by Beverly Cross, had a seven-year run in London’s West End and has had several revivals, including one in 2008 that won a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play. David Moberg heads the performing and visual arts department at IRSC and is the play’s director. He spoke recently about

Also in the cast is Bernard’s housekeeper, Berthe, played by Marisa Quijano. Moberg said that the production capitalizes on the 1960s aura. “Being a stewardess was a glamorous career,” he said. “They wore pencil-thin skirts. There’s an aura of glamour.” The setting is Bernard’s apartment and, as it’s a farce, there are a lot of doors. “There is a lot of opening and closing of doors,” Moberg said. “As a director, I love doors, but hate them for the set director. They sure are fun.” Next up for the drama department is the classic musical, “Damn Yankees.” It will be presented Feb. 11-15. The drama season will conclude with the musical “Nunsense” March 2629. The Indian River State College drama department presents the romantic comedy, “Boeing Boeing” by Marc Camoletti, Jan, 15-17 at the McAlpin Fine Arts Center, 3209 Virginia Ave., Fort Pierce, Performances are Jan. 15-17 at 7 p.m. and Jan. 17 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for subscription holders and $10 for non-subscription holders. Food Bank receives over $10,000 in one day #GivingTuesday results in 70,000 meals for hungry Treasure Coast residents FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

TREASURE COAST — Through a global online campaign called #GivingTuesday, conducted primarily through social media in December, the Treasure Coast Food Bank was able to raise more than $10,000 in one day. The third annual event coincided with Thanksgiving and the kickoff of the holiday shopping season, inspiring Treasure Coast residents to take collective action to feed the hungry. An anonymous donor graciously offered to match the Food Bank’s #GivingTuesday total, giving participants the opportunity to double their impact on the Treasure Coast. The Food Bank participated in #GivingTuesday through a combination of social media posts via their Facebook and Twitter accounts, augmented through several e-blast reminders, which encouraged supporters to take action in the fight against hunger by donating to the Food Bank. “We know that thousands of our supporters are actively engaged on various social media platforms, so we thought #GivingTuesday was a great way to connect with them,” said Judith Cruz, Treasure Coast Food Bank

CEO. “In a very short period of time, we were able to harness the generosity of our supporters, coupled with the matching gift from our anonymous donor, and raise enough funds to provide more than 70,000 additional meals to those who do not have the means to provide food for their families this holiday season.” On a weekly basis, the Treasure Coast Food Bank serves more than 100,000 individuals who are struggling to put food on their table, including nearly 35,000 children and 12,000 seniors. For more information on the Treasure Coast Food Bank, visit stophunger.org, “Like” the Food Bank on Facebook at facebook.com/ tcfoodbank, and follow them on Twitter at twitter.com/tcfoodbank. Treasure Coast Food Bank is the largest hunger relief agency on the Treasure Coast, providing 10 million of pounds of food to over 200 charitable organizations in Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, and Okeechobee counties serving those in need. In addition to food distribution, Treasure Coast Food Bank provides numerous programs that not only solve the immediate problems of hunger, but help individuals and families gain long-term food security. To learn more about #GivingTuesday participants and activities or to join the celebration of giving, go to www.givingtuesday.org, www. facebook.com/GivingTuesday and twitter.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Home Instead Senior Care completed its efforts this week to provide gifts and holiday cheer to local seniors. In its fifth year, Home Instead Senior Care has partnered with Butterfield’s Pharmacy and Medical Supply, Council on Aging and Meals on Wheels of St. Lucie and Seacoast National Bank to coordinate gift collection and distribution. Many area non-profits, retailers, volunteers and members of the community have participated to donate a variety of requested gifts. The program kicked off at Butterfield’s Pharmacy and Medical

Supply in St. Lucie West on Nov. 14. Donations were collected through December and have steadily been wrapped by volunteers. The gifts were delivered Dec. 22 and Dec. 23 by the Council on Aging Meals on Wheels volunteers. “Over 250 seniors (were) treated with gifts and companionship this year,” said Patricia Strickland, owner of the Home Instead Senior Care office, serving St. Lucie and Martin counties. “It is so heartwarming to know that we can brighten their holiday this year when the need is so great.” Home Instead Senior Care of Port St. Lucie is locally owned and operated by Patricia and
