Mutter’s Hearing Center, Inc. “I fell on my knees and thanked God for bringing me to that Miracle Man, Joe Mutter.” Carmela Buhrman knows a miracle when she hears one. And the 88 year-old heard one loud and clear after more than 20 years of suffering from profound industrial deafness. Buhrman had tried several hearing aids costing several thousands of dollars, but when she met Joe Mutter and tried her hearing aids for the first time, the whole world changed. “I fell down on my knees and thanked God for bringing me to that miracle man, Joe Mutter,” she said. “You would too, if suddenly you were able to hear sounds you hadn’t heard in over twenty years. I was missing out on so much.” “What a gift I have been given. The whole world opened up for me,” said Buhrman. “From the moment I walked into his office, Joe was gracious and approachable. He takes pride in his work and wants to make sure you are happy. Thanks to Joe Mutter, you can turn your back on me and I can still hear you,” she boasted. Joe Mutter and Carmela Buhrman There is no question that Buhrman’s life has changed from being able to hear the sweetest sounds of nature like the beautiful melodies of the meadowlark perched on the pole when she gets her mail, to the relief she experiences when she attends luncheons with friends and is no longer silenced because she is afraid that she will misspeak because she didn’t hear all of the conversation. “Thanks to that Miracle Man, I have no more missed moments, memories, or opportunities. That’s water under the bridge.” Thank you so much Joe!

the tri-county area there, and there’s more accessibility with tourists coming from Orlando,” he said. The Ingham has an extensive U.S. battle history. Vaccine shows promise in cancer prevention to have a substantial risk of disease recurrence. “This is largely because of tumor cells that escape during primary treatment. All it takes is a few malignant cells to continue to circulate in the body until they anchor and metastasize. Because these cells have already survived primary therapy, they are typically drug-resistant and much more difficult to treat.” The new vaccines targets proteins found on the patient’s tumor cells. Antigens, which are substances that mount an adaptive immune response, are genetically matched to the antigens found on the surface of the tumor cells. That is done using genetic and molecular profiling. The vaccine is targeted specifically to the patient’s tumor and should have few of the side effects that are found in most chemotherapy. Knutson, who previously served as director of the ovarian cancer and immunology program at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., said that vaccinations in two groups of patients had just been completed. One vaccine was for breast cancer and the other for a combination of breast and ovarian cancers. “We did the Phase I trials for safety, and we

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — There is no magic bullet for cancer. While diagnostic techniques and treatment have saved millions of lives, the search has continued to find vaccines to prevent and treat some of the most common cancers. On Nov. 18, the Vaccine & Gene Therapy Institute of Florida announced a collaborative research agreement with TapImmune, Inc., to bring the latter’s proprietary, targeted cancer vaccines into Phase II clinical trials for the prevention of recurrent breast and ovarian cancers. Cancer survivors are at high risk for recurrence from tumor cells that were not destroyed during treatment. Keith Knutson, who holds a doctorate in pharmacology from the University of Georgia, is VGTI Florida’s director of cancer vaccines and immune therapy program and the developer of the vaccines. He said that the need for the vaccine is urgent. “While modern cancer treatment regimens have significantly improved remission rates in patients with breast and ovarian cancers, the stark reality is that cancer survivors continue

City Council adding reception to later workshops Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER

PORT ST. LUCIE — Starting next year, City Council workshops will be more welcoming to the public. Rather than start workshops at 1 p.m. as they were this year, the Council will hold them at 6 p.m. on the third Monday of each month so more people can attend, Port St. Lucie city manager Jeff Bremer said. “By starting a little bit later, it will give those folks who work during the day to have the opportunity to get home and then have the opportunity to attend,” he said. The first one in the new timeslot will be held Tuesday, Jan. 20, however, due to Martin Luther King Day being the day before.

Ave. The meeting will be 9 a.m. to noon. “Our entire delegation is looking forward to hearing from Treasure Coast residents on state issues they are concerned about,” Negron said in an emailed response to queries. “The most important thing legislators can do is listen to our constituents.” Martin’s voters were in a mood to keep incumbents in the recent general election. Negron was the top vote getter in Martin County in the recent elections, besides the state’s chief financial officer, Jeff Atwater. Negron handily defeated Democratic challenger Bruno Moore to keep his Florida Senate seat, District 32. The district covers the eastern halves of St. Lucie and Martin counties, along with a northeast section of Palm Beach, and southeast part of Indian River counties. Districtwide, Negron got 66.79 percent of the 175,505 votes cast in the race. In Martin, Negron got 40,756 votes against Moore’s 13,865. That’s 74.25 against 25.38 percent in a race that 87.44 percent of voters who cast ballots participated in. Likely that had a lot to do with the Indian River Lagoon. Negron headed up the Florida Senate’s Select Committee on Indian River Lagoon and Lake Okeechobee that put forth an ambitious wish
The June and December meetings will remain at 1 p.m. for those who can’t attend an evening workshop. “This is a trial run to see how it works,” Councilwoman Linda Bartz said. The Council will also host a reception open to the public, starting at 5:30 p.m. before each meeting for the public to eat and mingle with the council. Mayor Greg Oravec said it could be profitable for local restaurant owners, too. “If this would gain popularity, it would be my hope that we could showcase a restaurant that opened up in the city or is a local proprietor and could feature them as a way to support local business,” he said. Oravec said he’ll cover the cost for pizza on the first go-around, though.
list during the 2014 session for Everglades restoration and water-cleaning efforts with a $220 million price tag spread over three years. Instead it got about $232 million, about $12 million more than requested, out of a $77.1 billion budget the Florida Legislature approved the last session. However, Negron said in a phone interview that getting the appropriations was only the first step. His top priority for the 60-day 2015 Florida Legislature session? “The first is following through with the projects we funded for the Indian River Lagoon and Lake Okeechobee,” he said. The session starts on March 3, and continues until May. Negron said he’ll make certain the funded projects don’t sit on anyone’s desk. Martin County is split between two House districts, 82 and 83. Rep. MaryLynn Magar represents District 82, which covers most of Martin County, and part of Palm Beach. Rep. Gayle Harrell represents the northeast section of Martin, along with part of St. Lucie County. Negron said passage of Amendment 1 will give the Florida Legislature millions more dollars to commit to buying lands for sending waters from Lake Okeechobee southward, rather than releasing it toward the Indian River Lagoon.

The vaccines target proteins that are expressed in the majority of patient’s cells.” TapImmune, the company involved in the collaboration with VGTI Florida, is an immunotherapy company that specializes in the development of vaccines for the treatment of cancers and infectious diseases. This type of collaborative arrangement is typical for the development of new vaccines and medications that are developed at research facilities. “TapImmune has purchased an option to license those vaccines,” Knutson said. “They have the exclusive right to develop and license them from us. The early steps are done by scientists, who make the discoveries. In our type of economic system, capitalism, companies have to drive the discoveries forward. Typically, a company is driven by the potential market.” At the present time, VGTI Florida is working to develop a consortium of hospitals and clinics for Phase II trials of the breast cancer vaccine.

The goal is to test it locally in Florida. There’s a high incidence of breast cancer and, as a result, a number of clinics that could participate.” Keith Knutson, VGTI “The goal is to test it locally in Florida,” Knutson said. “There’s a high incidence of breast cancer and, as a result, a number of clinics that could participate. We have to submit an investigation of new drug application to the FDA and hope to have it approved in the first half of 2015. By the second half, we hope to have trials opened in some sites. What we hope to do is to try to understand whether it will be effective in the shortest time possible. The ideal situation is to take patients recently treated and at risk for recurrence.” The parameters for the study have not been fully developed. Careful selection of study participants helps ensure the reliability of the findings. “We have hired seasoned consultants (who) have conducted advanced clinical trials in breast cancer to understand the best approach,” Knutson said. The researcher noted that a cancer vaccine is more promising now than ever before because of advances in understanding the
biology of individual breast cancers over the last 10-15 years. “We better understand the risk patterns of different subsets of breast cancer patients,” he said. “We also know better how to generate an immune response. Understanding the biology and the immune system has greatly enhanced our capabilities of performing research like this.” Knutson hopes this vaccine is the beginning of a new emphasis on breast cancer prevention. “The available data is that the immune system is effective against progressing disease,” he said. “It supports the concept that stimulating an immune response is a good thing. Ultimately, we want to move the vaccine into primary prevention. This is the first step in a prevention vaccine, in much the same way as polio and measles (are prevented.) There is a lot of work and due diligence. That’s our commitment at VGTI Florida.” For more information, visit the VGTI Florida website at vgtifl.org.

proposals for construction), so we took our time, did our research and met with people in the industry,” he said. In September, the City Council approved bond refinancing on the $39.9 million the city borrowed to create Tradition studios, buying staff more time. “I wasn’t in a hurry to get it done any other way than the right way,” Bremer said. The city had paid about $3.5 million annually on the debt. The new payments are set at $1.4 million a year until 2019, which
U-boats and enemy aircraft. In December of 1942, the Ingham engaged and sank a German submarine, U-626. The Ingham was instrumental as a searchand-rescue ship during the Vietnam War, helping prevent enemy forces from supplying ammunition and supplies to Communist allies in South Vietnam and providing medical support. The Ingham received two Presidential Unit Citations for work during the Vietnam War, the only cutter to receive two such designations. Today, the ship serves as a floating museum and training ground for Navy SEALS, Army Rangers, the FBI and the CIA, Verge said. To move the ship to Fort Pierce, Verge estimates that it would cost about $500,000, so he’s hoping the community supports the move and donates to the cause. St. Lucie County staff is conducting a feasibility study to see if bringing the ship to the Treasure Coast would be a good move. Although much is yet to be discussed, County Commissioner Chris Dzadovsky, who’s been leading the initiative, said the Fisherman’s Wharf Marina near the Hutchinson Island south bridge in Fort Pierce is a likely destination. Some work would need to be done first, he said. A seawall would need to be built, 11 boat slips would need to be removed, and crews would have to dredge the bottom from its current 13foot depth to 18 feet. Yearly operating and upkeep costs for the 78-year-old ship
will only cover interest payments. Once 2019 rolls around, the payments will be increased to $2.3 million and have to be paid by 2043, if the building isn’t sold by then. More likely, however, is that the building will be sold before then. Using a $14 million sale price as a benchmark, in a previous interview, Port St. Lucie Finance director Ed Fry said, if the building is sold, the yearly payments would be around $900,000 until 2019 and about $1.3 million after. The city is hosting an open house 10 a.m. Dec. 10.
total about $200,000, but Verge said those costs are covered by visitor fees. Currently, visitors are charged $10 each to visit, so 20,000 per year would be enough. The National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum being in such close proximity would help the Ingham, Verge said. Dzadovsky said nearly 70,000 people have visited the SEAL museum so far this year, which makes him optimistic for Ingham projections. “If we could get half of those visitors, we could easily cover the cost of upkeep,” Dzadovsky said. Having funding is half the battle. Verge said he only has three people continuously maintaining the ship in the Keys. “If we could get 15, 20 or 25 people to work on it, I think it would work out,” he said. Among the groups he’s pitched it to, Dzadovsky said everyone has been enthusiastic about the Ingham. “The connection with training and tourism is huge,” he said. “I’ve pitched it to the St. Lucie County Development Council, and they support it wholeheartedly. If there is enough support and the vision begins to materialize, Dzadovsky said he’d like to see the ship arrive in Fort Pierce in 2016 to celebrate its 80th birthday. “It’s really a matter of having the public’s support, and that will be predicated on whether we have enough donations and have people who would volunteer to take care of her,” Dzadovsky said.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Get into the holiday spirit with Gerry Polci and Lee Shapiro. They may not be household names, but back in the ‘70s, you bought all of their records. You heard them on the radio, saw them on TV and went to their concerts. So who are they? They’re the former stars of the hit-making factory known as Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. These guys toured the world with Frankie, recorded numerous hit albums with him and sang the lead vocals on songs like “Oh What a Night” — the biggest Seasons hit of all time. When they met in 1973, they were two boys from New Jersey barely out of their teens, and the Four Seasons hadn’t had a charted hit record in years. Along with Valli and songwriter/producer Bob Gaudio, Gerry Polci and Lee Shapiro successfully transitioned the group’s sound from ‘60s doowop to ‘70s pop with mega-hit songs like “Who Loves You” and “Oh What a Night.” Spurred by the runaway success of “Jersey Boys,” the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical based on the Four Seasons’ career, these former Seasons decided to reunite — along with an A-list group of musicians who wrote, recorded and performed with Carly Simon, Cat Stevens, Elton John, Jim Croce, Chicago, Luther Vandross, The Ramones, Carole King, and other mega-star acts of the era -
and give touring one more shot. They now call themselves The Hit Men, and their next tour stop will be at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. Their show is an amazing look back through rock ‘n’ roll history with a sprinkling of holiday hits from their brand new CD, recorded in the style of the artists with whom they’ve worked through the years. You’ll hear fascinating back stories of what it was like being on the road and in the recording studios with the stars with The Hit Men performing great songs from the Four Seasons songbook (from “Rag Doll,” “Dawn,” and “Walk Like a Man” to “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” “Marianne” and “Sherry”) plus other mega-hits that members of The Hit Men helped make famous back in the day such as Cat Stevens’ “Peace Train,” Jim Croce’s “Leroy Brown,” Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain” and Tommy James’ “Mony Mony”). Says music director and former Four Seasons member Lee Shapiro, “This show is a chance for everyone to relive the glory days of rock and roll with a great group of guys who actually lived and breathed the experience. You’ll walk out of the theater exhilarated, excited and wanting more. We guarantee it.” The Hit Men hit the stage at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center, 9221 S.E. Civic Center Place, Port St. Lucie. Tickets start at $37 and are available by calling (772) 2103313.

TREASURE COAST — It’s that time of year to support the Barnes & Noble Holiday Book Drive, now under way at its Jensen Beach bookstore. Helping People Succeed’s Healthy Families program will benefit from this annual campaign. From now until mid-December, a variety of children’s books will be on display behind the B&N check-out area and in a display in the center of the store. At checkout time, staff will ask each customer if they wish to participate in the book drive. Over the years, the Barnes & Noble Book Drive has provided hundreds of books benefitting children in Helping People Succeed programs. There are more than 25 books
in the selection in English and Spanish, ranging in price from $2.99 to $6.99 and in age groups from babies to 5-years olds. Guests are also invited to purchase any special book not on the authorized list, and that book will be included in the donation for Helping People Succeed families. The book drive is a national campaign, coordinated by Barnes & Noble stores to benefit local non-profit organizations. For additional information, please contact (772) 320-0770. MENORAH from page 12 Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, recalls the victory — more than 2,100 years ago — of a militarily weak, but spiritually strong, Jewish people over the mighty forces of the ruthless Greek/Syrian army that had overrun the Holy Land and tried to force the Jews to not practice their religion, engulfing the land and its people in darkness. The miraculous victory of religious freedom was compounded by a second great miracle that took place when arriving in the holy temple to kindle the Menorah, only one jug of sacred oil was found still pure and sealed. The Maccabees poured the one-day supply of oil into the great Menorah and rekindled the Menorah that had been desecrated and extinguished by the enemy. The small amount of oil did not burn out at the end of the first day, but continued to burn continuously for eight days, until the special process for preparing new
oil could be completed. Chanukah, The Festival of Lights — a celebration for all time — is highlighted by the kindling of the Menorah each night of the holiday. “Chanukah is a holiday that propagates the universal message that ultimately good will prevail over evil, freedom over oppression and light over darkness” said Rabbi Shlomo Uminer, director of the Chabad Jewish Center. “Lighting the Chanukah Menorah publicly in the public square reminds us of these events and also serves as a symbol and highlights the message of triumph of freedom over oppression, of spirit over matter, of light over darkness”. Today, Jews all over the world light their Menorah’s, in thanks to G-d, who has saved their ancestors and to the freedom and blessings given us today. Each night an additional light is kindled until, on the eighth day, the menorah is ablaze with eight beautiful lights.

DELEGATION from page A6 Under Amendment 1, a third of the money raised by state real-estate transaction fees — documentary stamps or “doc stamps” — will be mandatorily reserved to the state’s Land Acquisition Trust Fund for the next 20 years. Doc stamps were created in 1968 to fund conservation-land purchases, but the Florida Legislature later shunted the money to the general fund and used it for other purposes through the decades. “Because of Amendment 1, I think we’ll be developing a strategy statewide on water projects,” Negron said. Additionally, the Senator — whose wife is a member of the Martin County School Board — said he’d like to see education reform during the 2015 session. “I head (out) during the campaign, knocking on doors. Parents support testing, but there’s a delicate balance of how much testing we should do,” he said. Negron added, “I think there’ll be a topto-bottom look at how we do our (student-progress) measuring.” Attendees at the meeting will have an opportunity to address Harrell, Magar, and Negron. The Senator said the public meetings are a good opportunity for the public. He noted that the annexation of Beau Rivage from St. Lucie to Martin County started when

Classic ballet set to swing Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

TREASURE COAST — You may think you know “The Nutcracker Ballet”, but you probably haven’t seen it like this. For the fifth year, the Riverside Children’s Theatre’s Dance Conservatory will present “The Nutcracker: In Swing Time.” The production features choregrapher and librettist Adam Schnell’s version of the classic ballet, with music transposed by David Berger, Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington. The prediction is set in a private girl’s school in New England in 1938, at a time before the United States plunged into war. Schnell, who was formerly a dancer and choreographer with the Sarasota Ballet, Nevada Ballet Theatre and Les Ballets Trocadero de Monte Carlo, was familiar with a production by Donald Berg called “The Harlem Nutcracker.” Jazz greats had taken the Tchaikovsky score and adapted it for that production, set in Harlem after World War II.

WYNONNA from page B1 work on lighting crap and huge tours. It gets distracting. (Not having a big production) forces me to be more piss and vinegar. I’m more theatrical and hilarious with my husband. We’re like Ricky and Lucy. We have the best time.” The singer’s husband, drummer Cactus Moser, was in a near-fatal motorcycle accident several years ago and lost a leg. He’ll be there Dec. 11. “It’s like a high school play,” Wynonna said. “The crazier and more predictable, the better. It’s campy, fun and anything goes. I might run off stage and sit on someone’s lap. This is a spontaneous time of my life. I’m wide open and unpredictable.” Wynonna said she tells a lot of stories that help people interpret the songs. For the Christmas show, there will be light-hearted songs, followed by something heavy and intense. “The tour is tragicomedy,” she said. “I have an empty nest, and I cry a lot. Then I’m sassy. It’s tough and tender.” The singer said her husband is doing very well. “He gets all the standing ovations,” she said. “He’s so appreciative and sweet. It’s a miracle. The doctors said he’d never play

Wynonna Judd again. The fans are going crazy. In my opinion, he plays better than he did.” Wynonna’s shoe designs came out of her own needs. “I had a pair of plain, black tennis shoes that were comfortable on stage,” she said. “The band members are half my age, and I’m the sassy mama. I had my assistant get some fabric and my rhinestone genius bedazzled the crap out of them. Everyone, men women and children asked me, ‘Where did you get those?’ I called my manager, and the next thing I’m at a shoe convention in Vegas. I get hilarious mail from all walks of life. They’re 70-yearold women. Men want them, and I said we had to have a drag queen line. They look like nothing that’s out there. I don’t want my name on a bottle of perfume. Everyone’s doing that. This puts joy in their step. It’s not brain surgery. When you get joy out of a pair of shoes, life isn’t that bad.” For Wynonna, keeping it simple and basic has become a mantra. “I’ve been on ‘Oprah’ 18 times,”

she said. “Everyone knows the drama. People know me really well. I really relish the simple things, like talking to my daughter about her life. I want to have fun with my music. I’m an entertainer of the spirit. I want people to get up and dance until they drop. “When you come to a show, you hear my testimony. It’s not Ashley’s reality or my mother’s. You get to see me, and you learn me and know me. You walk away saying, ‘I get it now.’ That’s what I’m most proud of. I say it like it is, and I can make fun of myself. I’m at peace and have a sense of who I am. It’s confidence, not arrogance. I’ve worked really hard for 30 years.”

NUTCRACKER from page B2 The production ended in 2002, and the score lay unused. Riverside secured the rights to it and Schnell reworked the story so that it would work for Dance Conservatory students and could be used year after year. The production features costumes by Travis Halsey, a friend of Schnell’s at the Joffrey Ballet, and the sets are by Jon Moses, the Riverside’s managing director. The ballet master is Camilo Rodriguez. For Schnell, this fifth season has some special pleasures. “The coolest thing, from my perspective, is something I always thought would happen eventually. The first year, kids who were tiny mice would eventually take lead roles. The young lady who plays Clara, Kendra Osborn, was a mouse. It’s her fifth year with the production, and she’s not the only one. I’m continuously impressed by kids who have been in this since the beginning. The dancer playing young Clara was an enchanted toy. She said she always wanted to be young Clara. It’s the coolest thing to see kids commit to the production. They’ve put in five years like I’ve put in five years.” For Schnell, this production has been a journey. “I’ve done a lot of thinking, since before I started this project, about what the “Nutcracker” means to

Americans,” he said. “It’s been told so many ways, from on the prairie, to Eastern European Klezmer to urban hip hop. (It works) as long as whomever is putting it on is true to the kernel at the heart of the story: home, hearth, security and dreams that come true. That’s what makes the story. It makes people feel that family and people you care about are what’s important.” Schnell said that one of the most gratifying things for him is the number of audience members who come to the show each year, even though they have no connection to any cast members. “That they’ve made it a tradition is special to me,” he said. That, and watching the kids grow up.” For Schnell, it’s about the American dream. “Everyone will always love ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and Disney fairy tales,” he said. “It’s what we all love: a happy ending.” The Riverside Children’s Theatre Dance Conservatory presents “The Nutcracker: In Swing Time,” Dec. 11-14 at the Anne Morton Theatre, 3280 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach. Skewers Brazilian Steakhouse has it all
STAFF WRITER
bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Whatever you’re craving, there’s a good chance Skewers Brazilian Steakhouse along Port St. Lucie Boulevard has something to fulfill it. Owner Frank Poma brought a unique type of dining experience to Port St. Lucie in July after Tutto Fresco left the building. After going to a Brazilian Steakhouse seven years ago, Poma thought it would be a great idea to open one locally. Skewers offers two types of dining. They can get the “Rodizio” for $29.95, in which guests start by heading to the salad bar, if they choose, then are served a slew of meats. Or guests can order by the pound — $9.99 for each pound. “You can’t cook at home like this for this price,” Poma said. “Not everyone can afford to spend
$29.95 every night, so I wanted to do something more affordable.” The Rodizio is all-you-can-eat, but drinks and desserts aren’t included in the Rodizio price. From 5 – 8 p.m. drinks are sold two for the price of one, each night, however. And, if you prefer, you can sit at their full bar with an extensive collection of bottles on display. Calling it a salad bar doesn’t exactly do it justice, though. On it there’s white rice, black beans, cheese-and-bacon-covered potato skins, fresh vegetables and different soups each day, among other items. Each Rodizio diner gets a two-sided token, green on one side, red on the other. When guests are ready for the meats, they turn over their token to the green side, and the gauchos will be there shortly with different slow roasted meats, cut fresh

from large skewers. As far the skewers go, there are a dozen offerings, including filet mignon (some are wrapped in bacon), parmesan-topped pork, beer-marinated chicken wings, pork sausages and Poma’s favorite, picanha — a seasoned beef sirloin popular in Brazil. Diners can get as much or as little of each meat they please, so going on an empty stomach is encouraged. Each dish is homemade by Poma’s head chef, who does a wonderful job of preparing it all herself each night. After getting our drinks, my guest and I made sure our tokens were on the red side, then went to the salad bar. She raved about the homemade Caesar salad dressing. I was a big fan of the white rice, black beans and plantains. The beans had heaps of pork throughout. The soup of the day was creamed corn and bacon chowder, which was phenomenal. Going with the theme, it had a lot of meat in it. We flipped our tokens to green, and the gauchos offered us two medium-rare filet mignons. Tender and juicy, they were a hit. Having never had picanha, I
WWW.YOURVOICEWEEKLY.COM wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was delightful. The sirloin had a nice outer crust, seasoned with salt and garlic. The beer-marinated wings were also a nice switch from the traditional, deep-fried variety. I’ll probably be going back to get some by the pound for a football game, soon. After having sampled a few other things, we were given a slice of pineapple, slow roasted in rum and brown sugar. That piece of fruit may have been worth the trip alone. Then came a dessert tray. I didn’t think we had room. My guest had a slice of three leches cake, and I had a piece of dulce de leche drizzled cheesecake. Each were nicely done and topped with fresh fruit. For a nice night out, paired with a large appetite, Skewers offers a lot of options. Skewers will be having a New Year’s Eve party. For $50, guests will be able to attend and have a meal, centered around a carving station. A champaign midnight toast will also be provided. Located at 1184 S.E. Port St. Lucie Blvd., Skewers Brazilian Steakhouse is open from 5 – 10 p.m. Sundays and Tuesday through Thursdays and 5 – 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
