Crosstown area homes to help SWAT be more prepared Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER

PORT ST. LUCIE — For the first time, the Port St. Lucie Police Department’s SWAT team won’t have to worry about dirtying up a home for training. The City Council gave the department full reign, at its Jan. 26 regular meeting, over the 56 houses near West Virginia Avenue the city bought for the Crosstown Parkway bridge extension. Detective Keith Boham said the team will be better prepared as a result. “We don’t get to use houses that often, so it’s a really good opportunity for our team to train in them,” he said. And, when they got the oppor-

Jupiter resident and developer James Hall won the rights to negotiate a $15 million deal for the former Digital Domain site. “We’re really at the point where we really need to sell this building,” Councilwoman Shannon Martin said. “One of the things that’s important is to reduce our debt, and this is an opportunity.
“So, we need to move forward with this, so that we can take those funds, and we need to put them aside so we can make these annual payments.” Hall’s proposal included the $15 million purchase price, rather than the city’s required minimum of $12.7 million, and a $200,000 deposit to be paid five days after
an agreement was made. He also requested a 60-day inspection period, after which, the deposit would become nonrefundable and a 90-day closing period. Council members said they would prefer to reduce those timeframes to 30 and 60 days

Please do yourself, your family and your friends a favor. Go to a guy who is driven by customer satisfaction rather than his monthly profit and loss statement. Give him a try. I am sure you will get the results you are hoping for. Sincerely and best wishes Max Krupo/ St. Lucie West
Mr. & Mrs. John Orlandi St Lucie West
“I remember the days when I couldn’t hear the phone ring, my grand kids laughing or carry on a conversation with my husband. I had to finally admit to myself, it was time to get a hearing aid. Then I met Joe Mutter and the war was over. Joe is a Hearing Aid SPECIALIST, sent to me by God. I think about all of the money I wasted on these other hearing aids and it just breaks my heart. I am so lucky I found Joe and finally got what I paid for” Marianna Law / Juno Beach
“From the moment I walked in the door I was made to feel at home by Tammy who met me and walked me through some very simple paperwork I had to fill out. Joe did a very complete hearing test and I decided to get hearing aids from him. After Joe explained my options I decided to get myself good hearing aids. Joe spent quite a bit of time with me to help me understand my hearing loss and I love my new hearing aids that I got from Joe. I cannot thank my doctor enough for sending me to Joe!”
“It was a great experience, he didn’t rush me and wanted to hear my story .” CeciL Walker/Port St. Lucie

New county administrator sees potential in St. Lucie County Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER
bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com
Howard Tipton started his new position as St. Lucie County’s administrator in November after holding the same title in Brevard County since 2009. Your Voice News & Views asked a series of questions to help introduce Tipton to his new community. Share your qualifications and experience leading up to becoming St. Lucie County’s administrator. I have 32 years of Florida county government experience, which include time as Deputy County Administrator for Orange County (Orlando), County Administrator in Brevard, and Chief Administrative Officer for the Orange County Clerk of Courts. Education includes Master’s Degree in Public Administration (MPA) from UCF and attended the Harvard JFK School Program for Senior Executives in State & Local Govern-
ment. Volunteering has included serving as Board Chair of United Way of Brevard and of the Mental Health Association of Central Florida. How long is your contract for and what is the salary? I have a two-year contract with an annual salary of $167,500. What drew you to St. Lucie County besides there being a job opening? The opportunity to continue in a business I know well, to work with committed and progressive elected officials along with outstanding community and business leaders, and reside in a community that might just be the best place I’ve ever lived. What makes St. Lucie County different from Brevard County? The differences between Brevard and St. Lucie are largely economic. We each have an inlet, beaches, the Indian River, I-95

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The St. Lucie Historical Society welcomes visitors to a preview of the Adams-Cobb Cultural Center and “A Colorful Cattle Culture” special exhibit on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The Center is located in the historic P. P. Cobb building at 100 Avenue A in Fort Pierce, and the special exhibit is held in conjunction with the Florida Cracker Trail Riders’ parade, which begins at 10:30 a.m. in downtown. The Society’s newly acquired upstairs exhibition space chronicles the course of our waterways in shaping local history. The Adams-Cobb Cultural Center features maps, vintage photographs, drawings based on archeological findings and other interpretive materials. These resources will provide the historical context for various future educational exhibits and programs about life along the Treasure Coast and its western reaches. Future programs will span various topics and times throughout the centuries —from the culture of early residents, the Ais Indians, through residents’ contemporary concerns for the environmental and economic balance of the Indian River Lagoon and its tributaries. Jean Ellen Wilson, the Center’s administrator, said St. Lucie Historical Society volunteers will man the Center, ready to provide answers to questions about the rich history of Fort Pierce and its surrounds. The Center itself will provide a central, high-traffic location convenient to visitors and residents who attend downtown functions and who may also seek directions to other cultural in-

stitutions on the Treasure Coast, including the St. Lucie County Regional History Center, the Backus Museum & Gallery and Heathcote Botanical Gardens. The Society is pleased to collaborate with various public and private organizations in establishing the Center and is especially grateful to partner on this project with Alto “Bud” Adams Jr. and the Adams family. Adams, the patriarch of the Adams clan, and his family have made many generous contributions to the arts and cultural mainstays of our community. Adams’ commitment to preserving the P. P. Cobb building, which started life as a trading post in the 1870s, continues the family’s legacy of preserving local history. Bud Adams’ father, Judge Alto Adams Sr., was a history scholar whose scope of pursuits in cultural studies are reflected in the titles, from standards to rare, in the extensive history section of the Adams Library. Although the permanent collection of waterway history in the Cobb building is now a work in progress, the Society’s new exhibition space is scheduled for a grand opening on Saturday, March 21. A future program at the Center in collaboration with the Arts and Cultural Alliance of St. Lucie County will be scheduled at a later date and will highlight the scientific research and photography documenting the interconnectivity of our lands and waters. For more information on the Center, its programs, or volunteer opportunities, please call Nancy Bennett, president of the St. Lucie Historical Society, at (772) 4621795 or Jean Ellen Wilson, Adams-Cobb Cultural Center administrator, at (772) 332-3838.

Keeping up with new tax guidelines The IRS and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services are planning outreach efforts during filing season to remind taxpayers about new requirements under the Affordable Care Act. These projects will highlight the individual shared responsibility requirement, exemptions to the individual mandate and more. The IRS has already posted information about the Affordable Care Act on its website for taxpayers and tax professionals. The agency reported it will continue to work with tax professionals to give individuals the information they need to file their returns. Shared responsibility payment Unless exempt, individuals without minimum essential coverage will make a shared responsibility payment. For 2014, the individual shared responsibility payment is the greater of: 1 percent of household income that is above the tax return filing threshold for the individual’s filing status; or the individual’s flat dollar amount, which is $95 per adult and $47.50 per child, limited to a family maximum of $285, but capped at the cost of the national average premium for a bronze level health plan available through the Marketplace in 2014. For 2014, the annual national average premium for a bronze level health plan available
Michael Repoli through the Marketplace, is $204 per month per individual, but $1,020 per month for a family with five or more members. In January, the IRS announced the 2015 monthly national average premium for qualified health plans that have a bronze level of coverage for taxpayers to use in determining their maximum individual shared responsibility payment. The monthly national average premium for qualified health plans that have a bronze level of coverage and are offered through ACA Marketplaces in 2015 is $207 per individual but $1,035 per month for a family with five or more members. Exemptions The ACA exempts certain individuals from the shared re-

sponsibility requirement. Some exemptions may be claimed when an individual files a return. Others are only available through the ACA Marketplace, and others may be claimed either way. The IRS anticipates that many individuals will seek an exemption based on a hardship. Among the circumstances that may qualify for a hardship exemption are (not an exhaustive list): • The taxpayer was evicted in the past six months or was facing eviction or foreclosure • The taxpayer recently experienced the death of a close family member • The taxpayer experienced a fire, flood, or other natural or human-caused disaster that caused substantial damage to his or her property • The taxpayer filed for bankruptcy protection in the last six months In most cases, individuals will seek a hardship exemption through the ACA Marketplace. If granted, the Marketplace will issue a certificate to the individual, who will enter that number on his or her Form 8695, Health Coverage Exemption. Along with hardship, a number of other exemptions are available. They include exemptions based on short coverage gap, incarceration, income below filing threshold, and more. Self-reporting Individuals who had mini-
mum essential coverage in 2014 will self-report on their return. Individuals will “check a box” to declare they carried minimum essential coverage. The check box is located on Line 61 on Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, Line 38 on Form 1040A, and Line 11 on Form 1040-EZ. Employer reporting Code Section 6056 requires applicable large employers (an employer that employed an average of at least 50 full-time employees on business days during the preceding calendar year) to file information returns with the IRS and provide statements to full-time employees about health insurance coverage. Code Section 6055 imposes a similar requirement on health insurance issuers, plan sponsors of self-insured group coverage, and others. The IRS has issued draft forms for Code Section 6055 and 6056 reporting and is expected to complete the forms, and instructions, in 2015. The new reporting requirements were optional for 2014. They are mandatory for 2015. An applicable large employer must file information returns with the IRS and furnish statements to employees beginning in 2016 to report information about its offers of health coverage to its full-time employees for calendar year 2015. Michael Repoli is a certified public accountant in St. Lucie County.

TREASURE COAST — Actually, there is something new. There are two different commercial vaccines available, pneumovax and prevnar. The CDC used to recommend one or the other but now want everyone to have both. Prevnar was approved in 2011 by the FDA for adults 50 and older — prior to that, it was routinely given to infants and toddlers. Pneumovax prevents serious blood, brain, and lung infections caused by the Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. These infections include pneumonia, meningitis and septicemia. Many strains of Streptococcus pneumonia are resistant to antibiotics. In the U.S., more people die from pneumococcal disease each year than all other vaccine-preventable diseases combined. The best prevention is by vaccination, using a combination of the two vaccines mentioned above. Pneumococcal vaccination should be considered by many. Here are just a few: • Those who are 65 years of age and older • Those over two years of age with chronic heart or lung disorders, diabetes, chronic liver disease, alcoholism, chronic bronchitis, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or emphysema • Those over two years of age with spleen dysfunction (such as sickle cell disease), leukemia, and immunosuppressive conditions such as HIV infection • Alaskan natives and certain American Indian populations If you are moderately to severely ill, your primary care professional
Dr. Tapaswini Trevedi may recommend waiting to get the shot until after you recover. The CDC says you can still get the vaccines if you have a mild illness, such as a cold or low-grade fever. Like all vaccines, both PPSV23 and PCV13 can have side effects, but the risk of harm or death from either is extremely rare. As with any vaccine, check with your doctor for any reasons you may not be a candidate. In my opinion, 99 percent of my patients would benefit from the injection given the minor risks associated with the injection. All of us here at Treasure Coast Primary Care and Treasure Coast Urgent and Family Care wish you the best of heath in 2015. Tapaswini Trivedi, M.D., is a family practice physician with 17 years of experience. She completed her Family Medicine residency at Shands Hospital/University of Florida Medical Center in Jacksonville. Her areas of expertise include diabetes management, thyroid management, dermatology, woman’s health and preventative medicine.

We get there by sharing a common vision, committing to it, and holding each other accountable to attain it. It’s simple and extremely difficult all at the same time. The 1st 90 days have been very positive. Great team and community to work with. Strengths are our location (Ft. Pierce Inlet, I-95, Turnpike), assets include the largest general aviation airport (by acreage) in Florida, world class research facilities, great educational partners including IRSC and the School Board, strong leadership from elected officials at the state, county, and municipal levels committed to improving. Weaknesses, we’re not as safe as we can be and that’s unacceptable for our current residents and for future business development. The Port facility has been relatively dormant and along with the airport are future oppor-

What is going to determine the county’s future success, and how do St. Lucie West and Tradition factor into that? The ingredients for success are all here. The southern portion of the county to include Port St. Lucie and Tradition will continue to grow and develop. The north part of the county has all the potential but requires some additional effort in terms of safety and infrastructure. At the end of the day, we will only be as good as we’re committed to be so let us commit to be excellent.

TREASURE COAST — This year’s presidential budget includes nearly double the amount of funding for Everglades restoration, which would benefit the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon. The total $124 million in funding includes $60 million for the second phase of the C-44 canal project, which is to provide water treatment facilities and retention ponds for nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorous to settle before entering local waterways. Last year’s C-44 budget for Phase 1 and the start of Phase 2 was $38 million. It also budgets for $30 million for projects to help move water south of Lake Okeechobee and $17 million for the Kissimmee River Restoration Project that will help reduce run-off into the

PORT ST. LUCIE — Police are asking the public’s help in locating a man who is missing from an adult living facility along Thanksgiving Avenue. Frank Rhea, 64, left the facility on foot at about 1 p.m. Feb. 5, and its staff members and police are unaware of where he was heading, Port St. Lucie Police Master Sgt. Frank Sabol said. Rhea is known to frequently visit businesses along Port St. Lucie and Southwest Bayshore boulevards. Police searched overhead in helicopters and visited Winn-Dixie and Walgreens, among other stores, but were unable to find any leads, Sabol said. Rhea lived in Sebastian two years ago, but it’s unclear wheth-
Frank Rhea er he was heading north, Sabol said. “It’s kind of unusual that someone goes missing like that,” he said. Rhea suffers from medical ailments and needs medication. Sabol said Rhea sometimes has trouble walking. If anyone has information on his whereabouts, call 911 or the Port St. Lucie Police Department at (772) 871-5001.

BUDGET from page A12 lake. Farmers would benefit, too, with an additional $13 million available to pay them to conserve water in retention ponds, rather than let, nutrient-rich water pollute waterways. “This is a great step forward for our local waterways,” Rep. Patrick Murphy said. “The fact that we were able to get the Administration to commit to these important projects means the passion and hard work of the people in our community have achieved results. I commend the Administration for including this funding, and I will continue to fight for our waterways as the budget moves through Congress.” The announcement comes about a week after Murphy and Rep. Bill Posey refiled a bill that puts a higher funding priority on estuaries with urgent needs and reduces the amount of money spent on administrative costs in the National Estuary Program. The bill originally passed the House of Representatives in November, but the Senate never got to it before Congress closed. “This is yet another call to action for both short-term and long-term solutions to help our local waterways,” Murphy said.

“The fact that we were able to get the administration to commit to these important projects means the passion and hard work of the people in our community have achieved results. I commend the administration for including this funding, and I will continue to fight for our waterways as the budget moves through Congress.” Rep. Patrick Murphy Last year, the National Estuary Program funded 28 estuaries nationwide with each getting about $538,000, totaling 60 percent of the total fund. The rest of the money covered administrative costs. The new bill would allocate $27 million to all 28 estuaries each year from 2014 through 2018, requiring 80 percent to be split among the estuaries, and 5 percent would go toward administration. The remaining 15 percent would be distributed based on need, with estuaries having the most problems with obstacles such as extensive seagrass habitat losses, recurring harmful algae blooms, unusual marine mammal mortalities and invasive exotic species. That would leave about $770,000 for the Indian River
Lagoon. There will be other funds available and given out on a case-by-case basis, as needed. “Many of the nation’s estuaries are experiencing urgent and challenging ecological problems, including our own Indian River Lagoon,” Posey said. “Our bill simply requires that the EPA refocus existing funding to make sure that the money designated by Congress for estuaries is actually spent to address estuary needs.” Governor Rick Scott also had the Everglades in his sights. On Feb. 4, he called for $5 billion over 20 years to be paid to fund the Everglades restoration, beginning with $150 million starting this year, according to a press release. He didn’t say where the funding would come from, though.

ST. LUCIE WEST — Police are searching for a man they say stole a woman’s purse inside the McDonald’s in the St. Lucie West Wal-Mart Jan. 29. Lisa Lima was with her son, Anthony Lima, at about 9 p.m. that night, having a meal, when she noticed a man running away with her brown purse. “My purse! You stole my purse!” she said she yelled at the man, who police said is white male in his late teens to early 20s, slim build, dark facial hair with ‘bushy’ eyebrows, wearing a brown-and-white striped hood-
ie, brown baseball cap and dark pants. The man fled the Wal-Mart and left in a getaway vehicle – a black sedan; possibly an Acura with a spoiler – with two or three others inside. Surveillance footage shows Anthony Lima, 15, jumping on the vehicle’s spoiler to keep up with the thieves, but he was unable to stay on. No one was able to provide a license plate number. Lisa Lima said her purse contained a wallet and mostly bank and insurance cards. If you have any information on this case, call the Port St. Lucie Police Department at (772) 8715001 or Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-800-273 TIPS.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — One of St. Lucie County Tax Collector Chris Craft’s New Year’s resolutions for his office was a new logo. The improved design is much more than bright colors and updated graphics – there is a lifesaving story behind it. Lincoln Park Academy baseball player Christian Medina was killed at the age of 16 in a car accident on his way to school in 2013. Due to being a registered organ donor, he saved many lives. In February 2014, Craft and his team unveiled Christian’s Tree of Life in the Fort Pierce office’s lobby. Registered organ donors and organ recipients were invited to sign their names on leaves and butterflies to place on the tree in remembrance of Medina. The logo’s tree honors Medina and stories like his. Since the tree

was first displayed, the St. Lucie County driver license organ donor designation rate has risen to 52 percent – one of the best in the state. Blue and green were chosen as the two new colors for the logo. Blue represents professionalism, trust and loyalty, while green signifies renewal, health and healing. When the logo’s elements are combined, the memory of Medina shines through. “Christian will forever be remembered for saving many lives with the selfless act of being a registered organ donor,” Craft said. “This new logo is one more way for us to remember him and to spread awareness about the importance of registering to be an organ donor.” For more information on the St. Lucie County Tax Collector’s office, please visit tcslc.com, call 772-462-1650, or email taxcollector@tcslc.com. “Like” the St. Lucie County Tax Collector on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ StLucieCountyTaxCollector and follow on Twitter @SLCTaxCollector.

tunity to train in houses, Boham said the team had to be respectful because those homes weren’t scheduled for demolition. “When we train there, we won’t have to worry about getting mud on the floors,” he said. “It’s more realistic training. We could break the windows, doors; put holes in walls if we need. We can refine our tactics in what we do.” The team typically trains at the St. Lucie County range, the Okeechobee range, Palm Beach County and at Indian River State College’s Treasure Coast Public Safety training Complex. They’ll be training for several different types of rescue scenarios. “We train for hostage rescue, barricaded subjects. If someone is in their house for any reason and we have a warrant and they don’t want to come out, we train for that,” Boham said. “We do officer rescue, so if an officer needs help or has been taken as a hostage, we train for that. We serve warrants, so we train for that.” They’ll also have time for door, window or wall breaching, using explosives or other tools; K-9 searches and “flash-bang” grenade training, according to the agreement with the city.
Photo Courtesy of the Port St. Lucie Police Department Port St. Lucie’s SWAT team will have the opportunity to train in the homes being prepped for demolition for the Crosstown Parkway bridge. The agreement also states no live ammunition will be used during training, though the SWAT Commander, who will not be training, will have live ammunition in his or her weapon. Boham said the team’s first training day will be Feb. 18, in seven of the 56 houses, as long as the homes are fully prepped by then, which involves turning off the power and checking for asbestos. Then those seven will likely get torn down and another seven will be made available for the team’s next training day in March, Bo-
ham said. “If those same seven have not been demolished, then we could possibly use those again or if new ones are available, we’ll use those ones, too.” SWAT training days are scheduled twice a month for the full team, and snipers get a third day, usually at a shooting range in Okeechobee County, Boham said. The move also saves the department, city and taxpayers money. “There’s not that many windows we can break at other houses, and it’s an added expense if we do,” Boham said.

Port St Lucie, FL- The most common method your doctor will recommend to treat your neuropathy is with prescription drugs that may temporarily reduce your symptoms. These drugs have generic names such as Gabapentin, Lyrica, or Cymbalta and are primarily antidepressant or anti-seizure drugs. These drugs may cause you to feel uncomfortable and have a variety of harmful side effects.

As you can see in Figure 2 , as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not get the nutrients to continue to survive. The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. As long as you have not sustained at least 85% nerve damage then your condition can been treated
In order to effectively treat your neuropathy three factors must be determined. 1. What is the underlying cause? 2. How Much Nerve Damage Has Been Sustained. NOTE: Once you have sustained 85% nerve loss, there is nothing that we can do for you.
3. How much treatment will your condition require?
The treatment that is provided at our clinic has three main goals: 1. Increase blood flow
The main problem is that your doctor has told you to just live with the problem or try the drugs which you don’t like taking because they make you feel uncomfortable. There is now a facility right here on the Treasure Coast that offers you hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side effects. (see the special neruopathy severity examination at the end of this article)

Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow.
Dr. John Silva at our Functional Medicine Practice will do a neuropathy severity examination to determine the extent of the nerve damage for only $70. This neuropathy severity examination will consist of a detailed sensory evaluation, extensive peripheral vascular testing and a detailed analysis of the findings of your neuropathy.

The fair was held next to the St. Lucie County International Airport on St. Lucie Boulevard since 1966, but has been in existence since 1964. This is the 12th year at the intersection of Okeechobee Road and Midway Road. The fairgrounds boast a 250-acre site. St. Lucie County and the St. Lucie County Fair Association look forward to the future of having one of the nicest fairground facilities in the state. FAIR from page A26 munity of professionals and individuals all team together as sponsors to keep the St. Lucie County Fair truly the best it can possibly be. All efforts great or small are greatly appreciated by all that attend the St. Lucie County Fair. The fair is truly a “showcase” of what the great county of St. Lucie has to offer. The officers, trustees, directors, staff and association members are committed to the promotion of the areas industries, with the main focus being agricultural education of both our area and the state. This includes cattle and citrus, both of which have laid the background to St. Lucie County’s past and present existence. The future of St. Lucie County, of course, is the youth and the main purpose of a County Fair is to showcase its youth. The St. Lucie County Fair is extremely proud of their youth participation. The School building is crammed full with exhibits from many of our schools from the elementary level to our high school tech programs. In the livestock area you will find some of the best in steers, swine, birds, rabbits, chickens, horses and many other varieties of animals. Whether they show a 2,000-pound bull, make their own quilt or bake their favorite
cookie, many 4-H, FFA exhibits and independent exhibits are recognized as some of the best in the state. The St. Lucie County Fairs’ Livestock is again ready to present one of the state’s largest premier livestock shows and auction, with market animal sales traditionally ranked first or second in the state.

and make $15,000 of the deposit nonrefundable. Hall had retracted his offer Monday morning but reinstated it just before 5 p.m., assistant city attorney Azlina Goldstein Siegel said. In August, Hall unsuccessfully tried to buy the building for the same price, but the council chose to deny his bid along with four others in hopes of finding a more attractive offer. At that meeting, Hall said he plans to keep the building’s intended use – for a digital animation studio but with multiple tenants – which prompted the council to question if he planned on doing business with Digital Domain’s CEO John Textor, who now heads Pulse Entertainment in Tradition. Hall said he considered it, and John Textor denied having any ties to Hall, though, in a past interview, Textor said he would like to get back in Tradition Studios in a multi-tenant arrangement. The Council was skeptical of the chance of Textor being back in Tradition Studios, but some members weren’t as concerned Monday. “I think (Hall) is serious. This is his time,” Councilwoman Linda Bartz said. Councilman Ron Bowen said he hoped the council wouldn’t base its decision on whether Textor would be involved or his past mistakes. “We can’t live on the ghost of John Textor. We shouldn’t make the decision on who (Hall) associates with or works with now. It’s none of our business what he’s doing with the building. “I don’t care what Mr. Hall does with the building. If he wants to rent some of it out to Mr. Textor, fine,” Bowen said. The other offer the city received by the Jan. 23 deadline was a letter of intent to buy the building from Crescendo Development to use for medical offices. Crescendo has experience in running such office spaces in North Carolina, Texas, Ohio, and, recently, Vero Beach. Crescendo’s offer was $14 million with a $50,000 deposit. A third party entered the mix at the meeting. Having missed the deadline, Harry Wardell asked the city to extend the bidding process, so he could make a nine-figure offer for his client, Ghost Town Pictures, LLC, a new digital effects company formed by producers, artists and designers in Los Angeles. Wardell said the company had recently received $70 million to produce a “Shrek-like Western/
Ron Bowen
Greg Oravec comedy film” called “Buddy.” The company, he said, would have brought between 150 and 250 jobs over a five-year period, along with famous actors, producers and directors to star in voiceover roles. Those who dissented in the vote, Mayor Greg Oravec and Councilwoman Michelle Berger, were still skeptical. “This is not a personal decision. This is a business decision,” Berger said. “In a business, if I was wronged, I would not go back into business with that person again,” Berger said, referring to Textor. Oravec said he didn’t have a high level of confidence in Hall flip-flopping on his bid the morning of the vote. He also questioned whether it would be better to use real estate professionals to market the building, rather than city staff. But, he said he wasn’t sure if it would be worth it, anyway. “I do tend to believe that even if we did go out and get a broker and market it, it wouldn’t be enough of a delta , of a difference, to justify the time and expense of doing so,” he said. The ideal situation would have been a buyer submitting a bid that met all city requirements, Oravec said.

TREASURE COAST — Anthony Festa has performed the role of Tony in the landmark musical, “West Side Story” so often that he has appeared opposite seven different Marias. The actor played Tony in the world tour and on the United Kingdom tour. The latter was on very little sleep. “The Tony they had injured himself, and the understudy had never gone on,” Festa said. “They needed an emergency Tony, and I flew out and did a show that night.” Festa appeared at the Riverside in 2012 in “The Full Monty” and recently played Lt. Cable in “South Pacific” in Sarasota. The chance to appear again as Tony in “West Side Story” is a dream. “It’s a masterpiece,” he said. “The music is gorgeous. It’s a wonderful role. It was groundbreaking, and it still continues to be groundbreaking. It’s about finding love when confronted with love, about finding love when confronted by fear. It all takes place in one night. There’s never a blackout, a next day, a next week. When I’m playing Tony, once I hop on that rollercoaster, I go. It’s one continuous
Anthony Festa ride.” “West Side Story,” of course, is a retelling of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” The show had a dream team behind it, with a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and choreography by Jerome Robbins. It tells the story of the Jets, a Caucasian gang, and the Sharks, made up of Puerto Ricans. Tony falls for Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the Sharks’ leader. The show has some of the most

ST. LUCIE WEST — For pianist Mark Jones, attending Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio was like going to a candy store. “They had 328 Steinways,” he said. “It was heaven. It was, ‘Which one will I play today?’” Jones, who studied piano at Pepperdine University when he was 8 and made his symphonic debut at 12, will present an allLiszt concert Feb. 16 at St. Bernadette Church. The free concert is part of the St. Bernadette Concert Series. The popular series is free this year in an effort to make the programs available to a wider audience. Organist Matt Phelps will also perform works by Liszt, both with Jones and alone. The organist just received his doctoral degree in conducting from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and is the newly-appointed music director of West End United Methodist Church in Nashville. Jones, who served as assistant vocal coach with the Dayton Opera and as chorus master for the Treasure Coast Opera Society, noted that this was his very first performance without something by Rachmaninoff or Chopin. “It’s stepping out of the box,”

Mark Jones he said. “I’ve liked Liszt since I was a little kid. My dad had this album of favorite classics. I listened to those when I was 3 or 4. Liszt is challenging technically. He reinvented so many pieces from his early life, reworked them. They’re fabulous.” Jones likes to surprise his audience with the program, but he did say that he would be performing “Funerailles” and his colleague “Fantasy and Fugue on Bach.” Together, they will perform Liszt’s First Piano Concerto. Jones said he is thrilled to be

A past member of the Grammy-winning ensemble Chanticleer, Barber has performed at the Metropolitan Opera House, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. He is also the founder of Artists for a Cause, an organization of performing and visual artists who receive support in order to use their art and talent to improve our community. Local audiences will have two opportunities in February to hear Barber. On Feb. 18, he will perform “Classical for Everyone” at the Kane Center in Stuart. On Feb. 27, he will present the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber at St. Bernadette Church in St. Lucie West as part of the St. Bernadette Concert series. Museum director recalls Backus Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Artist A.E. (Bean) Backus ate breakfast at 6 a.m. with some of his friends. He always had fish, eggs, biscuits and grits, and those dishes are the basis for the “All You Can Eat” Backus Brunch and Raffle, to be held at the Backus Museum March 1. The menu also includes other brunch treats, including freshfried mahi-mahi, sausage, pancakes, fresh-squeezed Nelson Family Farms orange juice and Plant City strawberries. For Kathleen Fredrick, executive director, the staples of the brunch are a tribute to Backus. “Since we are the A.E. Backus Museum and Gallery, we want to stay true, or at least close, to the preferences of our founder, A.E. Backus,” she said. “He was primarily a vegetarian, eschewing the consumption of any creature he could love. As he stated to me many times, ‘Chickens and fish are too stupid to love,’ so he ate them. Cows and pigs are more

It begins with Tony and Maria goofing around and the seriousness kicks in and their souls combine. For Tony, this is what he was searching for when singing ‘Something’s Coming.’ He didn’t know it would be a girl.” Festa does considerable research for his roles, and he found a letter Leonard Bernstein wrote to his wife about “Something’s Coming.” “He wrote that he finally had a song that gave Tony the balls he needs,” Festa said. “In every other song, he was a dreamer and a lover. There’s a powerful young man there.” Festa noted the theme of rac-

I’m very excited about the opportunity to perform there, and I’m super excited do this program. It’s going to show the breadth of (Liszt’s) virtuosity as he made it available for some of us to perform.” Jones said that Liszt was not the easiest composer to play, and that was some of the attraction.

ism that is present in “West Side Story” and in “South Pacific,” where, as Lt. Cable, he sang the song about prejudice, “You’ve Got to be carefully taught.” He said that both shows have a relevance today because racism is still a powerful force in society. In the end, though, it is the powerful Laurents text and the soaring Bernstein and Sondheim songs that make the show what it is. “This is still my favorite role,” Festa said. “I opened the world tour in Italy. I sang at the oldest opera house in the world, on the same stage where Pavarotti sang. It was the most beautiful story on the oldest stage.” “West Side Story” will be presented at the Riverside Theatre’s Stark Stage, 3250 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach, Feb. 17-March 8. She’s so gifted, and it’s fun to make music with her. I tell audiences she’s not just an accompanist but a collaborative pianist. I get ideas from her.” The program will include songs like “Bring Them Home,” from Les Miserables,” “Ave Maria,” a medley from “West Side Story” and David Foster’s “The Prayer.” “There will also be famous classical melodies everybody knows,” Barber said. “I tease the audience that they either know a piece from ‘Rigoletto’ or a pizza commercial. People don’t always know why they know a piece. I’ve tried to pick music people have a relationship with and are already connected to and something they’ve never heard, but you don’t have to know it to love it.” For Barber, the fun is interacting with his audience. “I love my audience,” he said. “I love people. I’d much rather interact and have a dialogue. It’s more fun for them and for me.” For the Andrew Lloyd Webber show at St. Bernadette, Barber will be joined by soprano Shelley Keelor, cellist Jackie Robbins, boy soprano Erich Schuett, and

Tom Bold, founder of the concert series at St. Bernadette will conduct works from 10 shows including “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Evita,” Cats,” “Phantom of the Opera,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “Aspects of Love,” “Song and Dance, Requiem,” “Sunset Boulevard” and “Starlight Express.” This program is on a 10-city tour of Florida and will also be presented at the Lyric Theatre and the Eissey Campus Theatre in Palm Beach Gardens. It’s all part of schedule that keeps Barber busy and on the move. He recently performed in an outreach program in Ontario, giving six performances in front of 4,000 youngsters. It’s part of his mission to improve arts education and show how essential it is to brain and emotional development. “The arts have a unique ability to elicit emotion,” he said. “The highest art is to elicit emo-
tion and (neural) pathways are strengthened by emotion.” As far as Barber is concerned, the more performances he does, the better. “We’re crazy busy, and I love it,” he said. Terry Barber will present “Classical for Everyone” at the Kane Center, 900 S. E. Salerno Road, Stuart, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $18 for Kane members and $20 for non-members. They are available by calling (772) 2237807 or online at www.kanecenter.org. He will present the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. in a free concert at St, Bernadette Church, 350 N.W. intelligent, so he chose not to eat them.” The brunch and the raffle, which includes the prize of a Backus painting, have a serious purpose, which is to raise funds for the museum. The event also serves to spotlight the exhibition, The Power of Patronage,” featuring the private collection of the Binney Putnam family. The collection took 83 years to amass and covers the full scope of Backus’ work. Backus was that rare artist who attracted significant success while he lived. His first important patron was Dorothy Binney Putnam, daughter of Edwin Binney, inventor of the Crayola crayon, and wife of publisher G.P. Putnam. Dorothy Binney hosted Backus’ first art exhibit in 1931, when he was only 25, and launched his career. Binney became a lifelong friend and collector and her third husband, Don Blanding, promoted Backus through a weekly newspaper column. For this exhibition the heirs of Dorothy Binney Putnam have loaned the Backus Museum selected works from their collections. Most have never been exhibited before and many may not be seen in public again. This special exhibition runs through March 6. Fredrick noted the importance of a patron in boosting Backus’ career. “I think it’s essential,” she said. “I see it all the time in my daily life. People contact me and bring in lovely paintings, but no one knows them. If someone is your champion, it’s a ticket to advancement, and the arts is no exception.” Fredrick met Backus when she was 10. “He had an unassuming way,” she said, “He was modest to a fault. With an incredibly keen wit and keen sense of humor. He charmed everyone. He had 1,000 best friends. There are still many who knew him and even if you were a casual acquaintance, you felt close. He left his door open
A. E. Backus and everyone was welcomed to his home. He made people want to support and help him, just to be close. I am a living example.” Fredrick grew up in the area and met Backus at his studio, where kids were always welcomed. Her sister took her over there the first time. “I was totally captivated,” she said. “I wanted to go to his studio, and I can’t paint. His energy made you feel incredibly welcomed. It was the beginning of a friendship that lasted until he died.” Fredrick remembers that when she was 12, she was scheduled to go to summer camp. “He had just had a heart attack,” she recalled. “I thought I should stay, that he needed me. I went to camp, but I sent him letters. He kept the letters for years. He was amazing.” The Backus Brunch will take place March 1 from 9:30 a.m.12:30 p.m. at the Backus Museum, 500 N. Indian River Drive, Fort Pierce. Tickets are $12.50 in advance and $15 at the door. Raffle tickets for prizes including a Backus painting valued at $30,000 are $20 each or three for $50. Tickets may be purchase at the museum Wednesday-Saturday 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. and Sunday noon- 4 p.m. Raffle tickets may be purchased online at www.backusmuseum. com. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — When the skinny kids from Brooklyn that made up Jay & the Americans hit it big, they took stage names. Sandy Deanne, one of the founding members, explained why. “We started as kids,” he said. “We had to take stage names because there were no unlisted numbers. Our parents were awakened at 3 a.m. with giggling girls on the phone. My father told me if my mother was awakened one more time, he’d break my leg.” Sandy Deanne, Jay Traynor, Howie Kane and Kenny Vance were young singers who admired the music of groups like the Coasters and the Drifters. They went to the offices of famed songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who wrote for those groups as well as for Elvis Presley. “We went to audition,” Deanne said. “We had to get past the elevator operators to get in. We sat down and the walls were lined from ceiling to floor with gold

records for “Hound Dog,” “Poison Ivy,” “Stand by Me,” “Up on the Roof.” They were the best guys in the music business. We dreamed we could be with them. We lucked out. They liked us. We were the first white act they signed themselves; Colonel Parker brought Elvis to them. They liked our harmonies, and they liked Jay’s vibrato. They said we were clean cut with a little bit of soul.” There was one problem. Leiber and Stoller named them Binky Jones & the Americans. “It was tongue-in-cheek,” Deanne said. “We almost fainted. We wanted to be Dion & the Belmonts. We went home, too frightened to confront them. Finally we called them and told them we were so happy but please don’t saddle us with Binky Jones. You can’t trademark the words ‘the Americans,’ so there had to be something in front of it. They didn’t want any ethnicity so we said that Jay was a uniquely American name and how about Jay & the Americans? They said, ‘No problem.’” Jay & the Americans went on to have 18 hits and a dozen Top10 records. The group, with hits like, “This Magic Moment,” “Only in America,” “She Cried,” “Come a Little Bit Closer” and “Cara Mia,” comes to the Port St. Lucie

Civic Center Feb. 21 with founding members Deanne and Howie Kane, original member Marty Sanders and the newest “Jay,” Jay Reincke. Working with Leiber and Stoller was like getting a master class. “We saw how a song was crafted,” Deanne said. “The song is the basis of everything, and we learned how to pick them. Those songs have lasted, and someone else will play them. It’s a tribute to the song and the songwriter. “We went to them because of the records they were writing and making. We’d never heard violins on pop records. It was like going to ‘How to Make a Hit Record.’” We sat and listened. Everyone came to get advice. Carole King and Burt Bacharach and Hal David played demos just for their opinions. Jerry and Mike critiqued them.” One of the big hits, “Only in America,” had a story that could have happened only in America. The song was written for the show “West Side Story” and was going to be performed by the Drifters. “We were big fans of the Drifters,” Deanne said. “We wanted to be the white Drifters. They’d heard we had the feel. We hadn’t had a hit (for a while), and we were a bit disheartened. Through the walls, we could hear the Drifters rehearsing ‘Only in America.’ Jerry and Mike asked us to come in to hear

we’d be doing this 54 years later. We played Madison Square Garden eight times. We were New York kids. Selling out Madison Square Garden, you never forget. There were kids screaming our names. It was mind-boggling. We never dreamed it would happen. It was a wonderful thing. We came off the stage bewildered. The audience was standing and screaming and we said, ‘We fooled them again.’” Today, Deanne and his group are enjoying the ride. “Now we go out and tour to give back to all of the fans that bought all of those records and never got to see us,” he said. “We played major cities. We never played the boonies. We’re having a great time shaking hands with people who have old records or albums. Our hair is a little thinner and lighter in color. “They call it ‘oldies,’ but to me, it’s mental memorabilia, and it’s valuable. We’re building new memories, which is nice. We stopped taking drugs a long time ago bad we get high now by the love fest.”

the new song. We asked how come they didn’t give it to us since we were Jay & the Americans. They said the Drifters were hot, and it was for them. We went home disheartened.” The story wasn’t over. The record company refused to release the record, in part because it included the lyrics that a man could grow up to be president and a black man could not, not in those days. “We got a phone call and didn’t know why it wasn’t going to be released. We went running in. We were from New York and we were color-blind. We hung out on the streets with “Little Anthony and the Imperials.” We didn’t see the racial stuff so easily. We got into the studio and a lot of money had been spent for the Drifters. If we recorded it, they could recoup the money spent on arrangements and musicians. They made us record it in the Drifters’ key, which was too low for us. They speeded up and we sounded like Alvin and the Chipmunks, but it was a big hit for us.” Deanne added that more than 50 years later, a black man did grow up to be president. “It took 54 years to be legitimate,” he said. Deanne said that none of them imagined the career they had. “In our wildest dreams, as 18 year olds, we never imagined that

GFWC Port St. Lucie Woman’s Club to hold annual fashion show and luncheon FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The GFWC Port St. Lucie Woman’s Club will hold its Annual Fashion Show and Luncheon, “Spring Is in the Air,” on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 11 a.m., at the PGA Golf and Country Club in St. Lucie West. Guests will enjoy a sumptuous luncheon including salad, hot entrée accompanied by potatoes and vegetables, rolls and butter, dessert and coffee. After lunch, the theme will be highlighted by a fashion show of spring couture presented by White House, Black Market, Catherine’s Fashions, and Suit Yourself Swimwear by Peggy. Tickets will be available
for opportunities to bid on valuable gift baskets and to win door prizes. This is the club’s largest fundraiser of the year and proceeds from this event will help support its focus on education, which last year provided more than $4,000 in scholarships to deserving students at Indian River State College. The GFWC Port St. Lucie Woman’s Club is a nonprofit, non-political, non-sectarian group, whose purpose is community improvement through volunteer service, and which also supports the needs of local charities, such as Hibiscus Children’s Center and the Hacienda Girls’ Ranch. Tickets are $35 and may be obtained by calling Cheryl Zeak at (732) 616-2227.
