River warriors ready for battle

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2014 Capt. Don Voss attaches a symbolic skeletal fish to a fence at Phipps Park in Stuart Thursday, Feb. 6, before what was to be a release of water through The Locks connecting Lake Okeechobee and the St. Lucie Estuaries. The release never happened on that day.

TREASURE COAST — The mere notion that a drop of nutrient laden, polluted water from Lake Okeechobee could be released into the Indian River Lagoon through the Stuart Locks sent river advocates into a tailspin. As Army Corps of Engineers higher ups contemplated releasing water into Treasure Coast waterways last week in anticipa-

TORINO — A rash of brazen burglaries using pillowcases as a means to steal high-value items should leave city residents on high alert, one victim cautions. Torino resident, Alex Rojas, who’s lived in the area for eight years, said his family’s lives were

turned upside down on Jan. 17 after the family of four arrived home from vacation to find their home on Gatun Drive ransacked and stripped of expensive electronics and costly sentimental items. “We came back to a home that was invaded. It was an eerie feeling. We’re trying to find some

WOMEN from page A1 dition that will open in five or six months.” The practice is independent, and not affiliated with the new Traditional Medical Center, but it has added a St. Lucie West office to support the hospital. It is open five days a week and will remain open until the Tradition office is up and running. “We’ve added new doctors and a new midwife,” Hughes said. “We’ll be adding another physician in the summer. I think it’s great to serve an area that’s a little under-served, including western St. Lucie and Martin counties and Okeechobee County. We’ve always wanted to serve Okeechobee. We have 15-20 percent of the births in the county and they have no obstetrics services. They go to Sebring or Martin North. Tradition, the newest, would also be the closest.” Hughes also noted that the practice is rolling out one of the first 3-D mammography units on the Treasure Coast in the Jensen Beach office. The new technology, known as digital tomosynthesis, has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration, but is not yet widely available. The website wwwbreastcancer.org says that the advantages of the 3-D images include less discomfort, less overlapping of breast tissue that could hide a tumor and the ability to record more images from different angles. “It’s a lot more sensitive,” Hughes said. “It will be one of the first in the area and it will soon be the standard of care. It will be in the Jensen Beach office, but when the office in Tradition opens, we will have one there also.” Hughes said that while the practice is expanding, the individual attention each patient receives will not change. “What we’re trying to do is let everyone to know we’re large enough to serve the Treasure Coast but small enough to care for every patient. We’ve been doing it for nearly 50 years.”

BURGLARIES from page A1 peace,” Rojas said. “We went through the initial shock of ‘How could this be?’” Rojas said. After the shock subsided, Rojas sprang into action, creating a list of precautionary measures others need to heed to prevent being victimized. Rojas took the list to neighbors, members of his church and the media. Rojas is urging other Port St. Lucie residents to upgrade their security systems. “People need extra protection for glass shatter,” Rojas said. A back sliding glass door was shattered and a lack of motion sensors in the master bedroom didn’t trigger the alarm system, which was on, Rojas said. Rojas has since added $1,200 in security upgrades — a small price to pay for peace of mind, he said. Rojas recommends outside and inside light timers at all hours of the day to act as a deterrent. Stopping mail delivery during trips out of town is a must, he said. Plastering security system stickers to multiple doors and windows is another necessary measure. Rojas is shopping for an affordable camera system that digitally records footage for a month. “You want to show them there’s going to be obstacles,” Rojas said.

Tell a trusted neighbor to keep a watchful eye over your property during trips out of town, Rojas said. Talk about an escape plan with children, should a forcible entry occur when family members are home, Rojas said. In January, police said they’ve had four home invasions or attempted burglaries in the Torino area, including the Rojas household. Port St. Lucie Police Master Sgt. Frank Sabol estimates the Rojas house on Gatun Drive was burglarized between Jan. 14-17. Pillowcases were missing from the home. An attempted burglary occurred on Gatun Drive on Jan. 14. The bad guys could not gain entry after unsuccessfully trying to break a rear sliding glass door with a brick, Sabol said. A burglary on Lundy Circle occurred on Jan. 16, Sabol said. Thieves made out with jewelry, guns and coins, but did not use the victim’s pillowcases. The alarm was tripped at a home on Chesboro Terrace on Jan. 16, Sabol said. Dresser drawers were left open, but no goods or pillowcases were taken. The city had 16 burglaries from Jan. 9-24, Sabol said. Eight of those had missing pillowcases, but Sabol isn’t sure if they’re all linked. Police are still investigating, he said. Police arrested three pillowcase

burglars on Feb. 3 after they hit two Port St. Lucie homes, one on Floresta Drive, the other on Coastal Terrace. Home surveillance footage and witness statements aided officers in finding the suspects, who were driving a silver Acura, Sabol said. During the Feb. 3 stop, officers recovered stolen goods in pillowcases. Edwin Louissaint, 34 of Miami, Deandre Newsome, 16, of Fort Lauderdale and Ricardo Laguerre, 17, of Oakland were arrested for burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, burglary of an occupied dwelling, grand theft and possession of burglary tools. Sabol’s not so sure that the Torino cases are connected to the arrests, because the jailed men tended to strike the front of homes. The Torino homes were entered from the back. Police are still searching the three men’s South Florida residences to see if stolen items from the Torino burglaries turn up, Sabol said. There have been dozens of pillowcase burglaries and potential copycat cases since last year in St. Lucie and Martin counties. There have been no reported cases in St. Lucie West or Tradition. “This arrest is a huge break in the burglary cases that the Port St. Lucie Police Department has been working over the past year,” Sabol said in a statement. “Police became aware of Louissaint back

you will find his articles to be both enjoyable and worthwhile. Steve Erlanger, publisher and president About Integrity How many times has someone said to you, “Let me be perfectly honest with you?” Have you thought about what that means? Does it mean that sometimes, they are not perfectly honest? Are there levels or degrees of honesty in which there may be an occasion when honesty may not be so perfect? For me … honesty is a basic characteristic that one should possess within their value system and I consider it a zero sum game. You get no extra credit or points for being honest. Honesty means to tell the truth … always ... period. I expect that the people I do business with must be perfectly honest at all times…no exception. Actually, honesty is a fairly simple characteristic to obtain and to identify. The words follow the deed. Sooner or later it is a fairly simple matter to learn the truth and to identify dishonesty. On the other hand, integrity is a much more worthy characteristic. Think of it as a promise. The deed follows the word. If you are to be successful in business, then you not only need to be honest, you must have integrity. People know what to expect from

Peter Perry you. Once you make a commitment to a person or task, you must honor it. I try to live by that down to the smallest detail. Not only in business, but in all my personal actions as well. Actually integrity is not so difficult after all … For example it may be as simple as: returning phone calls, answering emails and letters, showing up for an appointment on time, meeting deadlines and to work at doing things right the first time. I look at it this way: what you say you are going to do. For me there is no greater compliment than for people to say, “I can always count on Peter Perry.” It is a matter of living up to my word, time after time. And since the people I work with can

PERRY from page A6 count on me, I feel that I have every right to expect as much from them. You can always do good deals with people who have integrity, but you can never do a good deal with people who do not. They may be perfectly honest, but it does not necessarily mean that they have integrity to follow through with their promises. In my prior business career as the CEO of a small software company, I tried to establish myself as dependable, especially where my customers were concerned. I did that by never making a promise I could not keep. There were often rough times when, in order to make a sale, I had to guarantee a completion date. To guarantee a completion date that was acceptable to the customer was not always possible, and often the sale hinged on that issue. It may have been tempting to guarantee a date that would satisfy the customer, figuring you could dance around the problem or make excuses when the date could not be met. But I never danced. It was more difficult to sell the customer by telling him the truth and not misleading him. I was more determined to establish the fact

that my word was my bond. It may sound a little corny, but I could never do business any other way. I was the front man for my company. What the customer thought about me, he would think about my company and all the people who worked for me and with me. It was not just my integrity that was at stake, it was the integrity of all of my colleagues as well. So next time someone tells you he will be perfectly honest, dig a little deeper and try to determine if he or she has integrity. Will they do what they say they will do? Better yet, I think you will find that as you continue to strive for the highest possible level of integrity within your own value system, those with integrity will seek you out and want to do business with you. You will reap greater rewards and discover that both your business and personal relationships will become much more fulfilling. Peter Perry is a commercial real

nrodriguez@YourVoiceWeekly.com

ST. LUCIE WEST — Port St. Lucie Police need the public’s help identifying a bold criminal who robbed a woman at gunpoint in St. Lucie West last week. The 67-year-old victim was robbed while sitting in her car in the parking lot of Walmart, located at 1675 N.W. St. Lucie West Blvd. on Feb. 7. Police responded at 5:40 p.m., according to a press release. “The victim told police that as she was sitting in her car, a white female approached her from the driver’s side window, pulled a black handgun on her, and demanded her purse or she would kill the victim,” Master Sgt. Frank Sabol said in the release. The female suspect is described

as a white female, approximately 25-30 years old, weighing 120130 pounds with light hair in a ponytail. She was wearing a green long-sleeved shirt with a white undershirt and blue jeans, police said. The getaway driver is described as a white male with long brown hair and a patch of hair on his chin. Parking lot surveillance footage shows the suspects pull behind the victim’s car in a black, four door car. Police believe the pair’s car may have had an Illinois license plate with a partial tag of CF253. The car left the Walmart parking lot and headed west on St. Lucie West Boulevard toward I-95, police said. If anyone has any information, they should call the Port St. Lucie Police Department at (772) 8715001 or Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-800-273 TIPS.

Woman admits to shooting husband during dispute Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer

nrodriguez@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TORINO — A woman who admitted to fatally shooting her husband during a domestic dispute at their Torino home last week has not been charged with a crime. Valerie Ann Lowe, 54, told police she shot her husband, Laurence Edward Daly, 59, during an argument the night of Feb. 5. Lowe called police after the shooting, Port St. Lucie Police Master Sgt. Frank Sabol said. Police arrived at approximately 10:30 p.m. They found Daly on the floor of the master bedroom with one gunshot wound to the chest, Sabol said. Daly was transported to Lawnwood Trauma Center in Fort Pierce, where he was pronounced dead. Police recovered the .38 Caliber

Smith and Wesson revolver Lowe used to shoot Daly. Lowe was not injured, Sabol said. Sabol said he couldn’t comment on Lowe’s demeanor at the scene. “She did say she shot him during an altercation,” Sabol said. The two married in July 2013, but the union wasn’t all wedded bliss. Port St. Lucie Police responded to two domestic disturbances at the home located on Celburn Drive in September and December. The two had a martial disagreement, but Daly left the home before officers arrived, Sabol said of the first call. In December, Lowe and her adult daughter had a dispute. There were no signs of a physical altercation and no arrests were made, Sabol said. As of press time, the Feb. 5 shooting is still under investigation.

tion of May’s rainy season, dozens of “river warriors” mobilized at the St. Lucie Lock and Dam in Stuart to protest on Feb. 6. Armed with signs and their voices, they chanted “Save our river” in the morning fog. “We need to let people know that we’re still watching. We are keeping track of lake levels. We are keeping track of discharges. We are keeping track of algae. We’re still watching and we’re learning more and more every day and we’re not going to quit until people figure this out, work together and solve this problem,” said Port St. Lucie resident Nyla Pipes. Pipes is also a founding member of One Florida Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated toward creating clean water statewide. Pipes was bracing for the worst, had the flood gates opened. “To be honest, I’m keeping track of my kids, because I want to make sure they’re away from the crowd,” Pipes said. “I don’t expect anything to get violent, but I do expect people to push up against the fences and probably a little bit of a scream of anguish. There’s a lot of frustration.” “This isn’t even anger, it’s more being heartsick,” Pipes said. “It’s right in the pit of your stomach.” The decision making process needs to change and sync, Pipes said. “There seems to be a disconnect between the state, the Army Corps, the DEP, the Fish and Wildlife Commission, the Seminole Tribe and the Miccosukee Tribe,” Pipes said. “Everybody wants things a certain way and it seems like they all conflict. It’s no longer working. Our estuaries can’t handle it and more importantly, our economy in this state cannot handle it.” One Florida cofounder Don Voss agreed early releases could spell disaster for the local economy. “I call it a sucker move, because

there’s a million people here that weren’t here last summer that now will be aware of this, so that could hurt us,” Voss said. “It depends on how our governments handle it ... (They) just have to be honest.” “This is something we have to live with. We never thought it was going to be over in one year. We were afraid this was going to happen. And we’re going to work to change it. This is only going to dedicate us more to getting that done.” Rio resident Rebecca Fatzinger wants the government to know it is destroying the most biodiverse ecosystem in all of North America. “I’m out here not only as a voice for people who need clean water, but for the wildlife,” Fatzinger said. “So many manatees have died, pelicans, dolphins, fish. And it just needs to stop, because you can’t replace them.” “The river is finally coming back from last year’s discharge. It’s just terrible.”

to re-evaluate and prioritize those businesses and industries best suited for helping grow jobs and improve the economic quality of life for St. Lucie County.” One of the top priorities for the EDC will be to identify and maintain the St. Lucie County brand and image that is portrayed to the community in general and companies wishing to expand or relocate to the county. A request for proposal for a local marketing/public relations firm has been created by a special EDC Communications Task Force. The Economic Development Council’s new awareness initiative will: • Refine branding concept for St. Lucie County highlighting the community as Florida’s global logistics center, its abundance of life science research and its exceptional quality of life. • Create an upgraded website using 3-D graphics and interactive tours and maps. • Develop new electronic, webbased and printed collateral materials for the EDC. • Produce a Community Resource Profile aimed at business executives and site selectors. “These are all critical components of establishing a uniform and standardized message about Saint Lucie County and our economic future,” Tesch said. “Right now there are many views and opinions of Saint Lucie and where we are going. Getting everyone on the same page with the same message will multiply our efforts and move us forward in a more concerted and unified manner.” Another critical component of the new leadership and direction for the EDC is the announcement of the creation of a significant economic and market research program. The program, under the direction of John Rhodes, senior principal with the nation-

ally acclaimed site selection and economic development consulting firm of Moran, Stahl & Boyer, will provide a current evaluation of Saint Lucie County’s economic health and identify target industries for jobs. A report from Moran, Stahl & Boyer will be completed within 30 days and will: • Re-evaluate and prioritize target industries. Categorize potential companies identified in research. • Evaluate existing local and regional vendor/supplier clusters • Explore the distribution/logistics industry sectors as a possible target for St. Lucie County. • Create marketing and prospect solicitation initiatives in the following target industry sectors: manufacturing, value added logistics, ag tech and life sciences. “As you can see, we are rapidly making progress in setting the stage for Saint Lucie County’s economic quality of life transformation. Within the next weeks and months there will be new initiatives announced to expand and accelerate job growth and a more positive economic outlook for Saint Lucie County. We look forward to having the entire community including our political and educational partners take part in a new future for Saint Lucie County,” Tesch said. The Economic Development Council of St. Lucie County, Inc. is a 501(c)(6) not-for-profit membership organization whose mission is to encourage a competitive environment that nurtures clusters of industries employing state-of-the-art technologies, a skilled workforce, and that stimulates economic growth through expansion of the private sector within St. Lucie County and Florida’s Research Coast. OKEECHOBEE — Once again, the re-enactment of the Battle of Okeechobee, of the Second Seminole War, will return at the newly created Okeechobee Battlefield Historic State Park in Okeechobee County on Saturday, Feb. 22 and Sunday, Feb. 23. With each annual event, new entertainment and venues are added: This year, Guy LaBree, historical artist, will be attending. The past six annual events drew large crowds. The Okeechobee Battlefield Friends Inc. is coordinating the upcoming event. Gates will be open from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. both days and battle re-enactments will also be held both days; Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. Admission is $10 per car. Seating is limited; it is recommended to bring your own chair. This historic battle, fought on Christmas Day in 1837, was the largest and fiercest battle of the Second Seminole War. A talented cast of re-enactors will portray fierce Indian warriors such as the great Indian war leaders Abiaca, Coacoochee, Halleck-Tustenuggee and Alligator. Some of these great warriors are portrayed by their descendants. As the drama unfolds, it depicts how the Seminoles, greatly outnumbered, battled the massive militia and U.S. Army troops led by Colonel Zachary Taylor and Colonel Richard Gentry of the Missouri Volunteers. The dramatic battle will be narrated by author and historian John Missall.

Experience Seminole and other artisans, pow wow dancing, military display, period vendors and exhibits, a Seminole jacket raffle, Seminole Indian food, living history, cannon demonstrations, 1800s Irish folk music, alligator demonstrations, children’s horse rides, music, fun, food and more! The Okeechobee Battlefield received designation by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in the summer of 2000 as one of America’s 11 most endangered historic lands due to encroaching development. Dedicated state, county, city and Tribal Officials, organizations and individuals partnered to preserve the land and after years of hard work and determination, the site was purchased by the state of Florida for a state park in 2006. The park is located at 38th Avenue, on what was once cattle range and is not yet officially open to the public as the grounds are in the planning and development process. Directions to the park are: From the Treasure Coast: Take 70 West to intersection of 70 and 441 in Okeechobee City; turn left onto 441 South and continue through Okeechobee to 441 S.E., turn left onto 441 S.E. and go approximately one mile and look for signage. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Children’s Home Society of Florida is pleased to announce it has received a grant from the Children’s Services Council of St. Lucie County. This funding will be used to help promote the Heart Gallery of Okeechobee & the Treasure Coast, which is a recruitment component of the Children’s Home Society of Florida’s Adoption program. The Heart Gallery of Okeechobee and the Treasure Coast is a collaborative effort between many nonprofit organizations dedicated to increasing the number of local adoptive families, as well as to heighten awareness of the many children needing families in our community. The Heart Gallery is a unique and stirring traveling photographic exhibit featuring photos of children who are waiting to be adopted. Throughout the year, the Heart Gallery is on exhibit at various locations in Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee, and St. Lucie counties. The children in the Heart Gallery are children who have been removed from their parents due to neglect, abuse and abandonment. They are currently in the care of the Florida foster care system. The children are, in many cases older (8-17 years old), part of a sibling group who wish to be adopted together, from a racially mixed heritage, or be physically, emotionally or mentally challenged. They are all children who want and deserve a home and a loving, supportive family to call their own. Since 2007, the Heart Gallery

of Okeechobee and the Treasure Coast has helped find adoptive families for more than 60 local children from the state foster care system. It has found homes for nearly 60 percent of children that previously would have had a less than 10 percent chance of finding a forever family without the existence of the Heart Gallery. The Heart Gallery also receives funding from United Way of Martin and Okeechobee counties, Children’s Services Council of Okeechobee County, Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers, Department of Children and Families and Devereux Community Based Care of Okeechobee and the Treasure Coast. On the front lines since 1902, Children’s Home Society of Florida is the oldest and largest statewide organization devoted to helping children and families. Children’s Home Society of Florida offers services that help break the cycles of abuse in more families, heal the pain for traumatized children, guide teens to successfully transition into adulthood and create strong, loving families through adoption. Children’s Home Society of Florida serves approximately 100,000 children and families throughout the state each year. More www.chsfl.org. The Children’s Services Council of St. Lucie County improves the lives of more than 30,000 children and families in our community by funding and partnering with quality agencies that ensure that every baby is a healthy baby, stop child abuse before it starts, keep kids off the streets, keep them in school, and keep them away from drugs and alcohol.

Broadway star comes to Riverside Shelley Koppel Staff writer

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

VERO BEACH — The classic Broadway musical, “South Pacific,” was ground-breaking. The 1949 musical, based on James Michener’s “Tales of the South Pacific,” tackled the difficult subject of racism at a time when such topics as interracial marriage were barely talked about. The Riverside Theatre has will present the musical Feb. 18-March 9 and they have announced that opera star David Pittsinger, who played the role of Emile de Becque in the Lincoln Center revival of the show, will reprise his role. He spoke recently from his home in Connecticut about a role that has changed his life. Pittsinger succeeded Tony-winner Paolo Szot at Lincoln Center, which was a challenge that he embraced. “I’ve performed the role more than anyone else,” he said. “I have more than 650 performances to my credit on Broadway, the Kennedy Center and in Los Angeles. It’s changed my life and I have an attitude of gratitude. I have a better approach to opera and a more relevant presence than before I stepped onto the Broadway stage. I can’t say enough about the piece. It’s as relevant today.” The role of Emile de Becque has great personal resonance for the singer. “I have yet to find a role that I can be a patriot from the outside in (until) Emile de Becque,” he said. “When I started on Broadway, the director said, ‘You speak French, you have twins and you have a wife of ethnicity. You are Emile de Becque. You don’t have to play him.’” The 6-foot, 4-inch tall Pittsinger has the

imposing presence to match de Becque’s, as well. De Becque was a plantation owner on that island in the South Pacific and Pittsinger identifies with that, too. “I’m a gentleman farmer in Connecticut,” he said. “I feel there is so much reflected in my true-to-life being. The appeal of Emile de Becque is that he is color-blind. He had a checkered past. He went to the South Pacific to escape prosecution for murder in France. “What you find out through the lyrics is his heart. Everything is at stake (with Nellie Forbush.) This may be his last chance at love. There is ‘Some Enchanted Evening,’ but I think so much more is said in ‘This Nearly Was Mine.’” Pittsinger said he understood the dilemma Nelly Forbush, the young Southern nurse from Little Rock, felt about the whirlwind courtship with a much older man, a man with biracial children. “It’s only two weeks and he says, ‘I know you’re the one,’ Pittsinger said. “It was a lot for her to absorb. It was a May-December romance, and she finds him so continental and dashing. He’s a man’s man.” Pittsinger said that he and Emile de Becque have changed together. “I love being a part of it and I loved watching it,” he said. “I watched, thinking about how I might portray it. I came up with something spontaneous, but de Becque changes as I change, both in and out of ‘South Pacific.’ I see it through my eyes today.” Politics and love of country is another passion for David Pittsinger. As a young man,

SafeSpace announces honored guest Columba Bush for 2014 ‘Every Woman is My Sister’ event FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

MARTIN COUNTY — SafeSpace is pleased to announce this year’s honored attendees at their Every Woman is My Sister event. Columba Bush, Florida’s former first lady and wife of former Governor Jeb Bush, will be an honored guest. Bush has been a champion of domestic violence for many years and is actively involved with the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Tiffany Carr, President/CEO of the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence, will serve as the keynote speaker and tell her own personal survival story. This year’s honorary chair is Martin County Fire Rescue Chief Joseph Ferrara, who has been a strong local advocate for SafeSpace and fighting domestic violence. SafeSpace’s signature fundraising event takes place on March 22 at 5:30 p.m. at Willoughby Golf Club in Stuart and is an event that celebrates survivors of domestic violence who have triumphed in creating safer lives for themselves and their chil-

dren. “Every Woman is My Sister” is hosted annually to benefit SafeSpace, a local nonprofit organization and the only Certified Domestic Violence Center on the Treasure Coast. In addition to providing victims of domestic violence with emergency shelter, SafeSpace offers education and support for families through its various outreach programs and its new Supportive Living Program. In the last fiscal year, SafeSpace served nearly 700 victims and their children and provided more than 11,000 safe nights of service. “Both Columba and Tiffany are two shining examples of champions for the cause, and we’re delighted to have them join us,” said SafeSpace CEO Jill Borowicz. Past keynote speakers have included Denise Brown, sister of the late Nicole Brown Simpson; Victor Rivas Rivers, actor, author and childhood survivor of domestic violence; Dr. Stephanie Haridopolos, survivor of domestic violence and current advocate of

FORT PIERCE — A rare spectacle is about to happen and you won’t want to miss it. Whips will be cracking and horses will be prancing as the Florida Cracker Trail Riders, nearly 170 strong not including horses, mules and wagons, will parade on horseback through downtown Fort Pierce on Saturday, Feb. 22 at approximately 10:30 a.m. The parade celebrates the end of the 27th Annual, 110-mile trail ride commemorating Florida’s settlers and their rugged cattle raising heritage. The parade begins on the corner of North Indian River Drive and Seaway Drive and travels south to the Orange Avenue, heads east and meanders through the Farmer’s Market, turns west on Avenue A and finally commences at Cobb’s Landing by the traffic roundabout on North Indian River Drive. Excellent parade viewing opportunities abound all along North Indian River Drive. This year’s parade is dedicated to Gregory Fredrick, a longtime Fort Pierce resident, who made the cross-state ride with his daughter, Corinne, and wife, Kathleen, 10 times before he died unexpectedly on Jan. 3. An active community volunteer, and an ambassador for the Florida Cracker Trail Association, Gregory loved making the crossstate ride and the opportunity it provided to share his passion for Florida’s unique heritage and the need to preserve it for future generations. Previous parade goers may remember Greg Fredrick as the big tall guy riding the little Florida Cracker mare with the orange and blue “Gator” wraps on her legs. Jetta won’t be making the cross-state ride this year, but she will be in the parade, albeit riderless, in remembrance of the kind man who cared for her so lovingly. Following the Cracker Trail Riders parade, the public is invited to join the riders along the waterfront to learn more about Florida history and this historic

event. The trail riders are eager to share their stories of the trail ride with parade-goers. It is a rare and exciting opportunity to learn about local history, meet true Florida cowboys and have a heck of a good time. Whip-popping demonstrations will be held and there will be plenty of photo opportunities for children and a few hearty intrepid adults to get their picture taken aboard a horse or mule. Of course, carrots and apple slices are always appreciated. Cobb’s Landing will even have the Flatwoods Blue Bluegrass Band playing as a special addition to the celebration. The Florida Cracker Trail Ride is a re-enactment of the cattle drives so lovingly described in Patrick Smith’s must-read-novel “A Land Remembered” which tells the tale of the settling of Florida’s east coast between 1850s and 1960s. Patrick Smith died Jan. 26 at the age of 86. First Published in 1984, “A Land Remembered”, whose plot line centers on Fort Pierce and its surrounding counties, chronicles three generations of the MacIveys, a fictional Florida family that battles wilderness hardships to rise from a dirt-poor Cracker lifestyle in the 1850s to become real estate tycoons in the late 1960s. Prior to the Civil War, a rugged brand of individuals settled along Florida’s east coast and central flatlands. They scratched out a living raising cattle, pigs, vegetables and fishing. These early settlers became known as Florida Crackers; a reference to the cracking sound made by the braided, leather whips they used to drive their cattle rather than a food preference or a particular philosophy. The leather-tough pioneers, known as Cracker Cowmen, from up and down the east coast and throughout central Florida, gathered with their scrub cattle each year; congregating west of Fort Pierce to drive their giant herd across the State to Punta Rosa, near today’s Sanibel. 98 candles for Genny Engler — The pride of Kings Isle Billiards Club! KINGS ISLE — Genny Engler was born on Feb. 21, 1916 and reared in Williamsport, Penn. She married her childhood sweetheart, Rudy Engler. They raised a daughter, Lana (Paternostro) and sons Lynn and Steven. When Rudy retired in 1981, they moved to Stuart residing at the Stuart Yacht and Golf Club. Genny and Rudy were both avid golfers, and Genny achieved a coveted Hole In One there. In 2002 they moved to Kings Isle in St. Lucie West. Rudy’s health was failing and they needed some assistance from daughter Lana and her husband Bob Paternostro, who were both retired and now living in Kings Isle. Rudy passed in 2004. Genny grieved terribly; then decided that she still had a lot to live for. So she joined the Kings Isle Billiards Club and learned how to shoot

pool. She now plays three times a week with the ladies. Of course she is the oldest pool player in Kings Isle. Genny also does a rather strenuous 45-minutes walking/aerobics class three mornings a week. Of course she is the oldest person in the classes. Genny attends a monthly Prayer/Bible Study group at St. Bernadette Church. Of course she is the oldest person in the class. Genny belongs to the Kings Isle Funseekers Club; the Kings Isle. Italian-American Club; and the Kings Isle Solo Club. Of course she is the oldest person in each club. Genny is a dear sweet lady; kind hearted to all; loved by many. When God finally calls her, she will leave behind three children, 13 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren ... and legions of friends who love her as their own mother.

passage way between Fort Pierce and Punta Rosa was the only dry trans-Florida passageway. To the north of Fort Pierce the Kissimmee River and its floodplains blocked the way and to the south lay the big lake and further south the Everglades made passage impossible. Fort Pierce’s historic P.P. Cobb Store, adjacent to the Cobb’s Landing restaurant, figured prominently in the cattle drive. Each day, as the cattle massed west of town, Cobb’s store ran 10 wagons, day and night, taking supplies out to the cattlemen and their herds as they prepared for the month long journey. As they crossed the state they were faced with untold hardship; thieves, snakes, swarms of mosquitoes, swamps and disease were just some of the challenges faced by the cowmen. Once the cowmen survived the long and difficult journey to Punta Rassa the cattle were sold to the Cubans who loaded them on ships and sailed south. The Cracker Cowmen, their pockets bulging with gold doubloons, took their bounty back to Fort Pierce and the P.P. Cobb Store where they purchased supplies and provisions for the coming year before returning to their

isolated homesteads and their eagerly waiting families. Many people mistakenly view the term “Cracker” as pejorative. The cowmen before them and those who participate in the annual commemorative Cracker Trail Ride relish the moniker cracker as a symbol of individualism, integrity, and a heritage nearly forgotten in the rush to develop Florida’s pristine land. Many visitors and residents have no idea that Florida is one of the nation’s top cattle producing states. In fact, Florida boasts the oldest breed of cattle in North America. The cows, known as Cracker Cows, descend from the cattle brought to the New World by Spanish explorers in the 1500s. Left behind by the Spaniards to turn wild, these scrawny cows were domesticated by the Seminoles in the 1800s and in turn by the white settlers who later came to be known as Florida Crackers.

RIVERSIDE from page B1 he served as an intern to Senator Lowell Weicker, a Republican from Connecticut. He even considered a career in public service before his love for music took precedence. Recently, he had the opportunity to perform at a musicale in front of the justices of the Supreme Court. “The musicales are a project of Justices Ginsburg and Scalia,” he said. “They both have a love of opera. I met Ginsburg when I performed ‘South Pacific’ at the Kennedy Center. She approached me and asked me to be a part of a musicale, where American artists perform in chambers with a small, invited audience. It was the experience of a lifetime. It was one of the great honors, as an artist, with my interest in politics, the Constitution and the Supreme Court.” Last summer, Pittsinger portrayed King Arthur in ‘Camelot’ at the Glimmerglass Festival in Cooperstown, New York. It was

another role he relished. “I really enjoyed doing it,” he said. “(Both South Pacific) and Camelot are great iconic musical theater pieces. They require legitimate chops in singing and acting. Operas are forms of musical theater, music meant to be performed on the stage. They’re America’s own form of opera. Americans have cornered the market. It requires a lot of the orchestra and the performers. It’s a demanding puzzle, but when the pieces fit, it’s theater magic.” The Riverside Theatre, 3250 Riverside Drive, Vero Beach, presents “South Pacific,” starring David Pittsinger, Feb. 18-March 9 on the Stark Stage. Performances are Feb. 18, 21-22, and 28, March 1, 7-8 at 8 p.m.; Feb. 19, 22-23, 26-27, March 1-2, 5, 8-9 at 2 p.m. and Feb 19-20, 26-27 and March 4-6 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $45-$70.
