City one step closer toward selling former Digital Domain building TRADITION — And now we wait. Negotiations between the city of Port St. Lucie’s attorneys and developer James Hall for Tradition Studios are under way. The ball is in Hall’s court. Last week, after the City Council voted 3-2 to give first dibs to Hall, the attorneys sent the terms of the agreement to Hall’s agent, Stuart Duffin. The city’s terms are different from what Hall originally proposed. Hall proposed a $15 million purchase price, rather than the city’s required minimum of $12.7 million, and a $200,000 deposit to be paid five days after an agreement was made. He also requested a 60day inspection period, after which, the deposit would become nonrefundable, and a 90-day closing period. The city is shortening those timeframes to 30 and 60 days and requiring $15,000 of the deposit to be nonrefundable. “There is still an opportunity for back-and-forth negotiations,” city manager Jeff Bremer said. “We’re hoping to get it

OUR VIEW done before the next council meeting, so the council can review it.” Bremer said he wouldn’t be surprised to see some back-and-forth and compromising, like any other negotiation, between the city and Hall before it’s all said and done. So, the Digital Domain debacle could truly be on its way to being over Feb. 23. Rather than waiting and taking another six months to maybe decide on a buyer, the council made the right choice by selling. Hall’s potential purchase of

Actress and dancer sets sights on pageant Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
PALM CITY — When Jeanette Marinello took a job with the FBI in New York City, she started as a file clerk and worked her way up to a major administrative post. She also caught the eye of a new special agent, Chris Mazzella. The two were married in 1967. Jeanette and Chris moved to Palm City in 2002, and the two became active in community theater, working with Shiloh Theatrical Productions and the Barn Theatre. Jeanette, a dancer and actress, has performed in shows including “Damn Yankees, “Can Can,” “Cinderella,” “Jekyll and Hyde” and “Curtain.” She recently starred in the Barn’s production of “Amateurs.” Last year, she took on a new challenge, as director of the show “Pin Curls.” Now Jeanette Mazzella, a two-time breast cancer survivor, has taken on a new challenge. She will compete March 7 in the Ms. Senior Florida Pageant at the Regency Park in Vero Beach. The pageant,
for women 60 and over, features 20 women from around the state. Mazzella spoke recently about this latest endeavor, which began when she saw an ad and went online to get information. “It’s not about beauty but about inner beauty,” she said. “It’s for somebody who loves life and is aging with elegance.” To compete, Mazzella had to put together a short biography to be presented the night of the pageant, a 45-second talk her philosophy of life and a two-minute talent segment. The dancer has elected to dance to “Mambo No. 5” by Lou Bega. The contestants rehearse for eight weeks prior to the pageant. Rehearsals include the “evening gown walk,” introducing themselves, the opening number, timing the 45-second spot and learning how to walk around the stage and exit to the side. Mazzella said she wasn’t sure at first what she wanted to do for her Photo courtesy of Jeanette Mazzella talent spot. Jeanette Mazzella of Palm City will compete in the Ms. Senior Florida pageant March 7 in Vero Beach. The singer and dancer will perform a Latin dance for the talent portion of the program.

led the ceremony amidst the couples’ friends and family. The very premise of spending one’s life with one other soul forever is intimidating for many, but these couples are a testament to promises kept. It was a celebration of promises withstanding the test of time; promises to love and cherish one another; promises to stick by the other’s side when faced with tough decisions; and, perhaps most importantly as some put it, promises to work through disagreements to come to a compromise. Some of the younger couples had been together 35 years. The couple with the longest-standing marriage had been together for 57 years, though they had started dating three years prior to tying the knot. Adrian and Barry Goetz said their secret to sticking together for 35 years was communication and sharing each other’s expectations before getting married. “Like what’s a typical Sunday for you going to look like, and what’s a typical Sunday for me going to look like?” Adrian Goetz said, sitting behind one of their original wedding photos. The slender brunette, Adrian, looked about the same as she did 35 years ago
when she donned a white dress. Barry was a bit more toned down this time around – fresh shaved, rather than having a full beard, mustache and long hair. “I was a bit of a hippy back then,” he said with a laugh. Their Sunday expectations aren’t all that different. Barry likes to rise early, play stick ball with his buddies and get breakfast afterwards. Adrian gets to have the morning to herself, but, afterwards, they reconnect and spend time together, often joining in whatever festivities are going on in the community they’ve lived in since near its 2007 inception. The two already had a good idea of what to expect when they got married. Adrian Goetz said they had been best friends for five years before starting to date. As public school teachers in Brooklyn, Barry said he was instantly interested in Adrian. “I was in the school six months before she was, and I saw her walking to an auditorium where all the new teachers were, and that was it.” She was a first-grade teacher, and he was the physical education teacher. They became friends and decided

Deciphering your unifying principles
L
ast month in this column, I spoke about goals and objectives, and I told the story of my goal 50 years ago to acquire a new Corvette. Due to the limitations of space, I did not address what was the motivation behind that goal. Yes, I was a car nut back then (still am) … but what was it that possessed me to be driven toward that goal? Actually, driven obsessively. What was hidden behind the curtain of my outward character which unveiled my true beliefs and disclosed my goal, which drove me into an action plan? What is it that makes me who I really am? Think of it this way: before you establish a goal, you must have a purpose and be true to yourself. And that goal and that purpose must not be in conflict with one’s value system. Perhaps a better way to understand it is when we examine a person’s character. If we observe their actions, we will begin to decipher their beliefs and what is important to that person. When we understand what is really important to that person we may then identify their values. This is what I call a person’s unifying principles.
The Feathered Nest YOUR
Peter Perry This is what makes a person who they really are, how they act and represents the motivation behind everything that they think and do. These values and beliefs plant the seeds which harvest into one’s life journey. In many ways these beliefs reflect and provide the driving forces, the motivation, the wants, desires and every action of that person. A person’s unifying principles are composed of a combination of several values and beliefs. These

represent the foundation on which a person’s character is built upon. It is who they are. All of us have a value system, and it can be very complex to understand, even for the most learned psychologist. Obviously, there is an almost endless list of values and beliefs that can make up a person’s unifying principles. Even though you may be acquainted with the Ten Commandments, the Golden Rule and other standards of good in our society it is for you to determine the standards which will guide you toward your desired goals. Although different for each of us, they would likely include our belief toward some of the following: money, religion, family, country, work, integrity, honesty, education and friendship, to name just a few. We all place a value on each of them

DRESS from page A4 one-of-a-kind sculpture titled “For The Love of the Game” has recently been completed and is constructed with more than 130 Rawlings baseballs donated by the St. Lucie Mets. The donated baseballs represent Minor League Baseball, Major League Baseball, practice balls, 50th Anniversary balls and All-Star game balls. The lengthy process begins with numerous sketches to find the perfect design representing the coastal area of the Treasure Coast of Florida, as well as the coastal artistic flair artist Jennifer Hitchner is known for. The deconstructing of the used baseballs begins by removing each and every stitch. Hitchner has been working diligently to get the dress autographed by each player of the New York Mets team. The dress will be on exhibit during this seasons home Spring Training games at Traditions Field in Port St. Lucie. Model Ashley Wright will throw out one of the first pitches of spring training wearing the baseball dress. Members of the public have the opportunity to win this unique piece of artwork, as tickets will be available at spring training or via hitchnerart.com. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the tickets will benefit Port St. Lucie
American Little League Association. Wearable art, also known as artwear or ‘art to wear,’ referring to individually designed pieces often constructed with sustainable or recycled materials, created as fine or expressive art. Hitchner has created wearable art using nautical charts and boat line from the Coast Guard Cutter Jarvis; plastic soda and water bottles, and even electrical sockets that can charge an iPhone. Hitchner is a New Jersey native that has recently planted her feet in the Treasure Coast of Florida after living in beautiful Oahu, Hawaii. While in Hawaii, she attended University of Hawaii-Manoa and studied fine arts. Her artwork has been on display at Hickam AFB Art Gallery; University of Hawaii Fashion Gallery; Art at Marks Garage; as well as Gallery 14 in Vero Beach. Hitchner plans to connect with other professional sports teams to create more eccentric artwork to benefit the communities. Hitchner has started sketching wearable designs using footballs, wooden baseball bats, leather baseball gloves, golf balls, tennis balls and even hockey pucks. The sky is the limit. More of Hitchner’s artwork can be seen at www.hitchnerart. com or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/HitchnerArt.

Tradition Studios was six months in the making. He originally made a $15 million offer in August, but wasn’t quite taken seriously by council, and I’d be lying if I told you I had any faith in him at the time. He took to the podium and spoke about how cool the digital effects business was and how he’d like to be a part of the industry as it becomes increasingly important in the medical field. He didn’t have an exact business plan and still doesn’t, as far as anyone not named James Hall is aware. But he was serious enough to be the only one of five different potential buyers from the August go-around to bid again. Perhaps the others saw something alarming Hall didn’t. Or, maybe, Hall saw something positive they didn’t. Eventually, the council members saw enough in Hall to not let his bid slip away again. And that’s a good thing. Two rounds of bidding were enough to make a sale. The city probably would have been better served had the council decided to market the building with a real estate professional, but using another six months for another round of bidding would have been a bit ridiculous at this point —
and more expensive. As Bremer pointed out, the important thing is that the building will cost taxpayers less now. “Regardless of the individuals involved, I’m glad they made a decision to go down a path … they went with the one that had a signed sales agreement,” Bremer said. Crescendo Development’s plan to use the site for medical offices would have probably been good, maybe even better, for the city, but that offer wasn’t concrete — just a letter of intent to purchase for $14 million with a $50,000 deposit. Prior to restructuring the city’s Digital Domain bond debt, it owed $3.4 million annually on the $39.9 million it originally borrowed. Now, $1.5 million is due each year as the city is only paying on the interest until 2019. Then the payments go to $2.3 million. But, the payments are going to be even lower now. When the bonds were restructured, finance director Ed Fry estimated they would go to $900,000 until 2019 and to $1.5 million thereafter. The bleeding hasn’t stopped, but it will be more manageable if everything goes according to plan, which is hopeful (maybe foolish) thinking. and tend to view them differently. They lay within the deep recesses of our mind and our subconscious prioritizes them and places varying degrees of importance to each. These values affect the direction of the needle in our moral compass. Some of these beliefs are quite clear to us, while others not so clear. A good example is that most everyone you ask about their view toward money will attach a high priority to it. Yes, doesn’t it feel good knowing that we have a big stack of money in our pockets? It gives us a good feeling of well-being. Being broke without any money is a terrible feeling. Yes, most of us are desirous of money; however, there are also other values within our network of unifying principles at work, which temper our desire to be wealthy at any cost. How does honesty, religion and family play into the equation? Hopefully these may represent stronger values for most of us and can explain why we are all not out robbing banks. Do I want to sacrifice my family for money? Am I willing to be dishonest for the sake of acquiring money that I have not rightfully earned? Am I willing to conduct myself in an unethical manner for the sake of a sale? Sometimes it not easy to decide
WWW.YOURVOICEWEEKLY.COM whether one should say yes or no. When we say something or do something which is in conflict with our values, we feel guilty or uncomfortable. Every person at some time has been in conflict with their values and must decide for themselves what is right and what is wrong. A person must choose between what he or she wishes to do and what he or she ought to do, or between what he want and what society expects of him or her. Your character is an outward reflection of your unifying principles. How we are viewed by others is important to all of us and when we view ourselves in a similar manner, we have high self-esteem. We feel good about ourselves. Our unifying principles and our goals are aligned. These values also play a role in everything that we do, whether or not we are conscious of it or not. So doesn’t it make sense to establish a goal or chart a course in life that is in harmony with our value system? I am still hooked on cars, and my current project is a 1971 Porsche 911. Yes, I am motivated to complete the restoration by the end of the month. It fits right in with who I really am. Recently finished the engine rebuilding process and installed it in the car, but at the same time I must temper my focus and balance my activities with

PORT ST. LUCIE — Four friends had planned a calm night of drinking, watching movies and playing cards, but it turned deadly for one man after an argument. Just before 1 a.m. Feb. 10, along the 1000 block of Southwest Janette Avenue, Jose Nieves Rivera fired at least five shots, killing Heriberto Cintron, 36, who was pronounced dead at 5:15 a.m. in Lawnwood Medical Center. According to the police report, the argument started between Cintron and his twin-brother Norberto Cintron Torres. Torres had arrived at Cintron’s house with Nieves Rivera around 6 p.m., Torres told police. They were drinking whiskey, playing cards and watching movies. Torres and Nieves Rivera had different stories. Torres told police he left at about 11 p.m. because he had to work early.

to date after five years of friendship. Dating seemed like a far-fetched idea at first, but love found a way, Barry Goetz said. “You try not to date and work in the same place, you know? It’s a hard thing to do. But then, after a few years, we decided enough was enough,” he said. Barry said one time-tested principle has been the backbone of their successful relationship. “Just be good to each other.” The ceremony was set to start, and they, along with the others assembled into a line inside the clubhouse. Smith asked them their tips for a successful marriage. Vito Blancato held his chin up and said, “A happy wife is a happy life!” and the others laughed along. Some others throughout the occasion said to never go to bed angry – work out issues beforehand. Before long, the couples were on their way to a brick and concrete

gazebo outside, next to a clear, blue lake. They were all smiles – no nervousness this time around; no potential runaway brides or grooms to worry about; no apprehension from someone piping up if they had any objections, though it would have been funny. Vito Blancato and his wife, Mary, led the line, as they were the longest-married couple of the bunch. They’ve been married 57 years and together as a couple for 60. Vito Blancato served in the Navy for two years during the Korean War. When he returned from his duties overseas, he was invited to a dinner and dance his friends were throwing. “The band leader was a personal friend of mine. We went to school together – lived in the neighborhood – and he was dancing with Mary. So he called me over and said, ‘Hey, how ya doin’, good to see you,’ so on and so forth. Then he said, ‘Hey, will you dance with this lady here. Her name is Mary.

Nieves Rivera told police said Torres originally left after Torres and Cintron were arguing about religion. About 20 minutes later, Torres began calling Nieves Rivera – about five times total, Nieves Rivera told police. When Torres arrived at the house, he punched Nieves Rivera in the face for not answering and pulled him by his ponytail. Nieves Rivera said he had to repeatedly elbow Torres to get free, and, once he was free, tried to leave.

Nieves Rivera said he was afraid Cintron was going to attack him after not trying to stop the fight between Nieves and Torres. Police warn against public against latest area scam: gift card fraud Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER
bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com
PORT ST. LUCIE — Cash is still king — even more so now that police are investigating more cases of gift card fraud. Port St. Lucie Police spokesman Frank Sabol said this is the newest trend their white-collar crime
detective has noticed. “This is the new scam. That’s what people are doing now … and one they’ve seen at other agencies in the area,” Sabol said. Police are urging people to use caution when buying gift cards. The scammers will steal a card from a display and temporarily replace it with a blank card. They then alter the card they stole and return it to the original package
on the shelf. Now that the card is altered, they are able to see when a person uploads money to the card at the register or at home. Using the card’s account number, which is generally visible on the outside of the packaging or by scratching off a security strip, the scam artist can make a purchase or transfer the money as soon as funds are uploaded.
Police urge people witnessing others stealing gift cards, even if they are unfunded, to notify police because it could prevent future fraud. To avoid becoming a victim of gift card fraud, police say to ask cashiers to remove the card from its packaging to inspect whether it has its security scratch-off strip, which covers the access code, before purchasing.

Rep. Murphy takes action against sale of illegal U.S. military medals FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
Shop at Home Service Available
Washington, D.C. — Recently, Representatives Patrick E. Murphy, D-Fla., and Ted Yoho R-Fla., sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder drawing attention to a Chinese e-commerce company, Alibaba, that is selling replica U.S. military medals and decorations. The letter calls for the Department of Justice to investigate the sale of these military medals — the Medal of Honor, Purple Heart, Navy Cross, and others — and calls for swift action with Congressional cooperation and support. Under federal law, the production and sale of any medal or decoration authorized by Congress for the armed forces is illegal. “This activity is utterly disrespectful and an insult to the brave men and women of the armed forces and their families whose sacrifices these awards represent,” said Rep. Murphy. “I look forward to working with Rep. Yoho and the Department of Justice to address this issue.” Rep. Yoho said medals for sale dishonor true veterans who

earned them. “The honorable service, commitment, and sacrifice of our dedicated service men and women are the reasons we have our freedoms and liberties. These medals reflect their dedication and sacrifice,” he said. “We ask the Attorney General to conduct an investigation and request that Alibaba stop providing the marketplace for the sale of these sacred medals. Anyone producing replicas of these hard earned medals and decorations is showing disrespect to the true value and meaning of these honors. We ask the Justice Department, respectfully, to do all it can to shut this practice down.” In this Congress, Rep. Murphy has been working diligently to address veterans’ issues. Recently, he introduced legislation to remove barriers in the Post-9/11 GI Bill to cover the cost of college application fees for veterans. He also led a bipartisan effort with Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., demanding immediate action to address the VA backlog in the St. Petersburg Regional Benefits Office affecting veterans across the state of Florida.

Murphy’s letter to the Department of Justice Dear Attorney General Holder, We are outraged and dismayed that Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce company, is selling replica military medals and decorations. The sale of these military items is a slap in the face to our service members, veterans, and military families who have made extraordinary sacrifices to earn these awards. As you know, it is unlawful to manufacture and sell “any decoration or medal authorized by Congress for the Armed Forces of the United States.” This includes replicas. The Alibaba website makes available for purchase identical replicas of these military awards including the Medal of Honor, the Navy Cross, the Air Force Cross, and the Purple Heart. We have attached screenshots for your reference. These are awarded to members of our Armed Forces to honor outstanding service to our country, to those whose personal acts of valor go above and beyond the call of
duty, for valor and extraordinary heroism in combat, and to those wounded or killed in the line of duty. The sale of these awards is about so much more than fraudulent representation about the receipt of military decorations and medals. It is about stolen valor. We know you believe as we do that the valor and heroism of our nation’s bravest are earned and should not be peddled on a Chinese website. Do you share our interpretation that the sale of these military awards and decorations is illegal? If so, what actions has the Department of Justice taken to investigate Alibaba? What additional actions will be taken, and how can the Congress support your efforts? Thank you for your attention to this matter. We look forward to your timely response. Sincerely, Patrick E. Murphy MEMBER OF CONGRESS Ted Yoho MEMBER OF CONGRESS

ST. LUCIE WEST — It’s a safe bet most people know that the Knights of Columbus is a large, charitable fraternity begun by Catholics to assist other Catholics in need. But most people probably aren’t aware that among its degrees of seniority is the 4 Degree — which was originally designated to include defenders of patriotism, as well as defenders of

Port St Lucie, FL- The most common method your doctor will recommend to treat your neuropathy is with prescription drugs that may temporarily reduce your symptoms. These drugs have generic names such as Gabapentin, Lyrica, or Cymbalta and are primarily antidepressant or anti-seizure drugs. These drugs may cause you to feel uncomfortable and have a variety of harmful side effects.

As you can see in Figure 2 , as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not get the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die” they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning and many additional symptoms. l blood these very smal Figure2: When seased they begin di e vessels becom the nerves begin to d to shrivel up an . te ra ne ge de
The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. As long as you have not sustained at least 85% nerve damage then your condition can been treated
In order to effectively treat your neuropathy three factors must be determined. 1. What is the underlying cause? 2. How Much Nerve Damage Has Been Sustained. NOTE: Once you have sustained 85% nerve loss, there is nothing that we can do for you.
3. How much treatment will your condition require?
The treatment that is provided at our clinic has three main goals: 1. Increase blood flow
The main problem is that your doctor has told you to just live with the problem or try the drugs which you don’t like taking because they make you feel uncomfortable. There is now a facility right here on the Treasure Coast that offers you hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side effects. (see the special neruopathy severity examination at the end of this article)
2. Stimulates small fiber nerves
Dr. John Silva will be offering this neuropathy severity examination to the first 15 callers Call to make an appointment Dr. Silva to determine if with D your peripheral neuropathy can be treated.

Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow.
Dr. John Silva at our Functional Medicine Practice will do a neuropathy severity examination to determine the extent of the nerve damage for only $70. This neuropathy severity examination will consist of a detailed sensory evaluation, extensive peripheral vascular testing and a detailed analysis of the findings of your neuropathy.

the faith. Today, this means 4 Degree Knights look after veterans in need, as well as others. Begun in 1882 by Father Michael McGavney on Connecticut the organization was named after mariner Christopher Columbus, and as a result of Catholics of the time being denied entry in organizations like the Freemasonry. In those days, Catholics were denied entry into unions and other groups that provided a social net for those in need, and McGavney wanted to fill the gaps. In 2013, the Knights, almost 2 million strong, gave more than $170 million directly to charity and performed more than 70 million man-hours of voluntary service. The first three degrees are involved in general charity endeavors, while the 4 Degree, consisting of veterans, does the support work on veterans’ needs. At a recent conference at a St. Lucie West eatery, four members of the Our Lady of Fatima Assembly 3090, based at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, St. Lucie West, gathered to help explain their assembly’s mission. “We support veterans and their families who need our help,” said 4 Degree member Larry D’Ange-
lo, a Vietnam-era Army veteran. “And we help homeless vets. This past Christmas, we collected close to $900 in gift cards.” The 4th Degree also conducts a food drive at St. Bernadette’s, which, up till now, is distributed in Fort Pierce. “But we’re working a location on Village Green Parkway,” said member Dick Banville, also a Vietnam-era Army veteran. “A meeting will take place shortly (between the Knights and county officials) to see whether we can have it.” The Knights collect a heck of a lot of food in their drives. Last year, they collected 3,600 pounds of goods, according to D’Angelo. Each year, the Knights conduct many other fundraisers, such as a Tootsie Roll Drive for handicapped children, and this year, they’ve established a new program where coupons are collected to help serving troops offset the costs of basic necessities, like food and toiletries. Other activities include a toy collection at Christmas, and Breakfast with Santa, with Mrs. Claus and an elf (last year, Joe Lisboa, a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam era, and his wife, Angela, and granddaughter, Paige Loyola, played the roles).

Two years ago, the St. Lucie West Knights attended the funeral of Army Sgt. Justin Johnson, who was killed in action in Afghanistan. Mike Rice, the only civilian in the group, said the Knights also support the Honor Flight, an effort they began two years ago. “We have been very influential in getting them up there, and there was even a 4th Degree who went,” he said. The Knights also maintain a “walk of honor” at a grotto at the church, in memory of those veterans who have died. On Memorial Day, the Knights will hold their pig roast, with “all the trimmings,” for parish members, family and friends. Music will be provided by a DJ, and tickets are $10.

There are 270 members of the Our Lady of Fatima Knights, 87 of whom are 4 Degree, Lisboa said. “Close to 50 percent (of the entire membership) are veterans.” Asked whether the Knights have an auxiliary, the four men spoke over each other in praise of the Columbiettes. “They are our helping hand,” D’Angelo said. “They’re involved in everything we do.” “They work at all our functions,” Banville said. “And boy, do they work.” “We’d be lost without them,” Rice said. For Valentine’s Day, they said they were having a special dinner, which the Columbiettes were going to prepare, but at which the Knights planned to be the servers. Regardless of degree, “We all work hand in hand,” Lisboa said. “We’re very solid.” (For more information on the mission of the Knights of Columbus, visit www.kofc.org)

TREASURE COAST — WPTV and Fox 29 anchor and reporter Jay Cashmere has been named the honorary chairman of the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast’s annual Paws and Claws Gala. He also will emcee the event, which will be held on Sat., Feb. 21, from 6 to 11 p.m. at Harbour Ridge Yacht & Country Club, 12600 Harbour Ridge Blvd., in Palm City. This year’s theme is “Diamonds in the Ruff” as the HSTC celebrates its 60th anniversary of serving the community. The Paws and Claws Gala is the Treasure Coast’s largest and oldest event supporting homeless pets in need. Cashmere adopted a purebred 170 pound Great Dane from the HSTC three years ago. Although the popular broadcaster has been serving as the Paws and Claws emcee for years, he says his interest in the HSTC goes well beyond the event. “The HSTC is as much a part of my family as our beloved Great Dane, Jake, knowing this wonderful organization brought him into our lives,” said Cashmere. “There’s no better feeling than to surround yourself with people who give all their efforts to find forever homes for animals in need on the Treasure Coast.” During the gala, guests can dance to the sounds of Memory Lane and enjoy both silent and live auctions. Some of the featured live auction items include two Lyric Theater “Golden Pass Tickets” which guarantee seats for every Lyric Theater performance in the 2015/ 2016 Season; a one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted gold and diamond pendant specially designed by David
Crandall with Eric Michaels Fine Jewelry; and a destination trip for two, including airfare, to a quaint country cottage located outside of London, England. Hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and dinner also will be served. The cost to attend is $275 per person and tables for eight or ten guests may be reserved. Volunteers Allola McGraw and Beverly Mauermann are co-chairing the event. The remaining committee volunteers are Vicki Brown, Bob Castellano and Maryellen Castellano, Dixie Church, Dana Coates, Ann Corwell, Lori DesRuisseaux, Carol Dippy, Cindy Greenspan, Susan Halliburton, Sandy Jevaney, Marilyn Morris, Alexandra Owen, Carol Plato, Drue Pollack, Carol Silcox, Kathy Skrzypczak, Karen Spriggs, Karen Viener and Kay Ziegler. Sponsorship packages are still available, silent auction gifts are welcome, and the Humane Society is accepting 60th Anniversary gifts in support of this major event. All gala sponsors, committee members, and generous HSTC donors will be invited to this year’s Paws & Claws Sponsor Party, which will be held at Sailfish Splash Waterpark, Thursday, Feb. 19, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Attendees will be served light bites and refreshments as they watch live demonstrations of synchronized swimming and high board diving. The HSTC would like to thank its top sponsors: 20-Carat Diamond Sponsors - Vicki Brown and Ed Botwinick, The Savastano Family Foundation; 10-Carat Diamond Sponsor - Carl’s Buick, Langford Foundation; 5-Carat Diamond Sponsor - Betty Lahti, Wilmington Trust N.A.; 2-Carat Diamond Sponsors - Apex Pav-

In 2014, state Rep. Cary Pigman and state Sen. Denise Grimsley secured funding for the park to open. Construction has begun and the goal and vision for the park to open to the public is soon to be a reality. The annual events have greatly assisted in continuing with the momentum towards this goal being achieved. The Okeechobee Battlefield Friends Inc. is truly grateful for the outpouring of dedication and commitment from the many partners and sponsors who remain steadfast. own chair. This historic battle, fought on Christmas Day in 1837, was the largest and fiercest battle of the Second Seminole War. A talented cast of re-enactors will portray fierce Indian warriors such as the great Indian war leaders Abiaca, Coacoochee, Halleck-Tustenuggee and Alligator. Some of these great warriors are portrayed by their descendants. As the drama unfolds, it depicts how the Seminoles, greatly outnumbered, battled the massive militia and U.S. Army troops led by Colonel Zachary Taylor and Colonel Richard Gentry of the Missouri Volunteers. The dramatic battle will be narrated by author and historian John Missall. TREASURE COAST — You know the songs. From “Do You Believe in Magic?” to “Did You Ever Have to Make up Your Mind?” to “Rain on the Roof,” to “Nashville Cats,” to “Summer in the City,” the music of John Sebastian has been a part of the soundtrack of America for decades. Both with the Loving’ Spoonful and on his own, John Sebastian set the course for a new American sound taken from blues country, rock and jug bands. John Sebastian will make an appearance in our area at the Emerson Center in Vero Beach March 14. His appearance is part of the Masters of Music Series that also features Livingston Taylor, Tom Paxton and Janis Ian. Sebastian is a New Yorker who grew up in Greenwich Village. His father was a classical harmonica player, and his mother a radio script writer. Burl Ives and Woody Guthrie were regular visitors to the Greenwich Village home, and Sebastian was part of the folk music scene that began in the 1950s. His first band was the Even Dozen Jug Band, and his Photo courtesy of Paris Productions skills on the autoharp, guitar Singer/songwriter John Sebastian, who founded The Lovin’ Spoonful and went on to a successful solo career, appears at the Emerson Center March 14 as Part of the Masters of Music series. The last concert in the series, on April 10, will feature Janis Ian and Tom Paxton.

SLC Firefighters Benevolent presents ‘Laughter Saves Lives’ comedy show FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The St. Lucie County Firefighters Benevolent is pleased to present Laughter Saves Lives, a comedy show presented by retired New York Firefighter John Larocchia, on Friday, Feb. 28. The show will star Larocchia and fellow comedian Steve Netta and will be hosted by celebrity impersonator John Santo. Larocchia founded the nonprofit organization, “Laughter Saves Lives,” after losing more than half his squadron during 9/11. The show will be presented at the Elks Club, 343 S.W. Prima Vista Blvd. in Port St. Lucie. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. The evening will also include food and drinks available to purchase, raffles and a 50/50 drawing. “We’re really excited to present this show,” said local firefighter and event chairman Donny Stefani. “Funds raised will go to assist first responders in need as well as our local benevolent association. This is a really good show, nationally acclaimed, so I think everyone will have a great time while helping our local heroes.” Founder John Larocchia was already a comedian when 9/11 happened. Twenty members of his crew perished, along with Larocchia’s good friend and fellow comedian, Tommy Gardner. Larocchia now uses his talent as a comedian to help other first responders, including firefighters, and police officers. Donations are also made to fire, police and military related
charities in honor of their service to others. The event is sponsored by the Hilton Garden Inn PGA Village in Port St. Lucie and the Elks Club No. 2823 of St. Lucie West. For tickets to the event, go to www.Laughtersaveslives.org or call Donny Stefani at (954) 914-5125. St. Lucie County Firefighters Benevolent is a
nonprofit organization made up of local professional firefighters and paramedics. The organization has presented Pink Heals Tour in St. Lucie County the past four years. The group recently unveiled a concession trailer that has a TV displaying kid’s safety videos and sponsor commercials. Like them on Facebook at Facebook.com/St.LucieFirefighters.

Just For Two!
and harmonica led him to accompany Mississippi John Hurt, Judy Collins, Bob Dylan and others. In 1965, Sebastian and Zal Yanovsky, both folk artists, joined with Steve Boone and Joe Butler to form “The Lovin’ Spoonful. The name came from a Mississippi John Hurt song, “The Coffee Blues.” The new group had their first seven singles in the Top 10 at a time when the Beatles and British groups were dominating the landscape. Sebastian left the group in 1969 for a solo career; he and The Lovin’ Spoonful were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. In a phone interview, Sebastian spoke about his career, Woodstock and his famous godmother. Sebastian said that his eclectic background influenced his work. “I had a funny mixed bag,” he said. “My father played classical, my mother wrote for radio, and I went to prep school in New Jersey. There were folk cafés a few blocks (from where I lived.) I heard things like the Harry Smith catalogue, an amazing accumulation of great rootsy guys. Hearing it affected our lives. Burl Ives was around the house, and he talked my father into letting a slightly crazed singer stay. He said the guy would be the great American songwriter.” The guy was Woody Guthrie. He spent two weeks on the Sebastians’ couch. Sebastian’s own work reflects many influences. “Summer in the City,” considered one of the best songs written about summer, has sounds that evoke congested city traffic. It’s reminiscent of what George Gershwin did in “An American in Paris.” “That is precisely the effect we were seeking,” he said. “We had gotten though the verse and chorus and were looking for a middle. We added traffic, like in ‘An American in Paris.’” By the time Woodstock rolled around, in 1969, Sebastian had left the Spoonful and was there as an audience member. That didn’t last long.

“I went because (record producer) Paul Rothschild said it would be a likely place for something wonderful,” he said. “There was no security. The music world was so small and everybody knew each other. I was backstage. It was raining and the crowd was soaked. They said, ‘Now we need someone who can hold them long enough with an acoustic guitar,’ and they’re looking at me. I hadn’t brought an instrument.” Sebastian borrowed a guitar and did a five-song set. Sebastian’s godmother was Vivian Vance, a New York stage actress who gained fame as Ethel Mertz, sidekick to Lucille ball’s Lucy Ricardo, on “I Love Lucy.” Sebastian said she was sort of an Auntie Mame of godmothers. “My mom was in radio,” he said. “They were Midwestern girls who came to New York and had each other as touchstones. I never felt like I didn’t know her. There’s a picture of me at 5 at our Bank Street apartment. I am holding her hand, and I am her puppy. She was unconventional.” Sebastian said that his shows are pretty simple. “I come as one guy and one guitar,” he said. “I am really enjoying playing a lot of these songs. The interaction with the crowd is the reason I do it for a living.” He added that he’d appreciate it if audience members left their cell phones at home. Sebastian said that he has a strong memory of a concert in Florida, including being teargassed by police. He tactfully doesn’t recall the city in which it occurred. “The week before, Led Zep had been through and there was a riot,” he said. The police were anticipating a riot at my show and were there. It was so insane. They were at the back of the theater, facing the audience. The show was full, so people were not allowed in, and they were banging on the doors. The police turned to the doors and the audience started throwing things at the police. They began to gas the audience. Me

ART SALE AND SHOW

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The A.E. Backus Museum will present “Sequined Sentinels - Masterpieces of Haitian Art,” an exhibition featuring beaded Voodou flags from the private collection of art critic, journalist and art collector, Candice Russell. The show will be on view March 12 through May 1. Haitian Vodou flags, with their amazing color and imagery, have become very popular in the international art market in recent years. Russell bought her first piece of Haitian artwork, a painting by noted Haitian artist LaFortune Felix, titled “Ceremony,” in 1985 from an art dealer in Coconut Grove. She was struck by the work’s rich color, heavy symbolism and its central figure, a nude man on a pedestal holding a sacrificial knife. In an interview Russell give to SouthFlorida.com in 2013, she spoke about the painting, saying, “It’s very uncommon and bizarre to see a nude man at the center of a painting like that, but I loved the mystery and the theatricality along with the color palette, which reminded me of Paul Gauguin.”

HAITIAN from page B7 Haitian art is a complicated tradition, reflecting African roots with strong indigenous American and European aesthetic and religious influences. The island of Haiti is a paradox itself, attempting to establish a peaceful democracy amid threats of dictatorship, a legacy of corruption and the rubble left behind by the cataclysmic 2010 earthquake. The Purse Party returns TREASURE COAST — Since it began, The Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast has held many fundraisers to keep it thriving and continuing to be one of the most loved family and kid-friendly venues in the area. Events such as Treasure Fest, Kids at Heart Gala, and the High Tea Benefit have been vital to this nonprofit organization. One of the biggest and most popular fundraisers for the museum is their Annual Purse Party, and it makes its return this spring. On March 9 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., women will gather at the exclusive Harbour Ridge Yacht & Country Club to attend the 7th Annual Purse Party. This fabulous event is to benefit The Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast’s Educational Community Outreach and Scholarship Programs. Guests will enjoy a fashion show provided by select stores at Harbor Bay Plaza, a luncheon and cocktails, as they bid on purses designed by Kate Spade, Coach, Dooney & Bourke, Kieselstein-Cord, Louis Vuitton, Alaia and others. The Purse Party, to date, has raised more than $260,000 for
the museum’s education and outreach programs, which have allowed thousands of students along the Treasure Coast to participate in these programs for free. The mission of The Children’s Museum is to offer children and families a safe place to explore and learn through hands-on activities, educational programs and cultural experiences and to spark discovery and creative thinking. Their mission would not continue to flourish if it was not for the continued support of the community. The Purse Party continues to be one of the biggest and most successful fundraisers for The Children’s Museum. Thank you to our secured sponsors: Carole Kozloski, Marti Huizenga, U.S. Trust, Kathleen Walgreen, Josephine Covelli, Doreen Koenig at City/Ashley Furniture, Marsha Cetta, Lauri Goldstein, Mildred Mariner with the Huizenga Business School at Nova Southeastern University and FPL for making this event possible. Join the fun and excitement and help support education in the community. Tickets are $125. To RSVP or to be a Purse Party sponsor, call (772) 225-7575, Ext. 204 or go to www.ChildrensMuseumTC.org

College sets spring variety concert Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — For Professor John Southall, director of bands and coordinator of music education at Indian River State College, the educational component of a concert is as important as the entertainment value. That is why he spends summers looking though the music literature for new arrangements of familiar pieces. “It’s a difficult process,” he said. “I do research over the summer to find the newest contemporary and traditional jazz ensemble arrangements.” The result is an opportunity to please the audience and have teachable moments for students. He used Glenn Miller’s “In the Mood,” as an example. The classic will be featured in the spring Variety Concert March 5-7, featuring the IRSC Company Singers, under the direction of Dale Rieth, and the Jazz Ensembles, under Southall’s direction. “People see a title and think, ‘I know that song,” Southall said. “When it starts, it is not like the original. Then there’s a specific moment from the original, and there’s an ‘aha’ moment. That’s what I’m looking for. I want to provide literature for our patrons they love and value, and there’s an educational piece, teaching students how to read and interpret key signature and different
rhythms.” In a piece like “In the Mood,” Southall said he talks to students about the historical significance of the piece and why it is so well-regarded. “Glenn Miller write it for his Big Band, and it was Number Obey on the charts for 13 weeks. It was significant then and is very popular today. When the saxophone starts at the beginning, I can hear the audience cheer. This is more than a musical composition. It defined the culture in 1940-1941. It’s just a wonderful, uplifting piece.” The concert will begin with another Glenn Miller hit, “Pennsylvania 6-5000,” featuring the trumpet and tenor saxophone sections. The Ladies’ Company Ensemble will sing two numbers, including Irving Berlin’ funny “Sisters,” and the Men’s Company Ensemble will sing a medley from The Temptations and “Jersey Boys.” The Jazz Ensemble will follow with a new arrangement of Lennon and McCartney’s “We Can Work it Out.” There are several surprises, and then the first half ends with the Jazz Ensemble playing “Night of the Mojito.” After the intermission, the Men’s Company Ensemble will sing “Fascinating Rhythm;” the Jazz Ensemble will play “A Child is Born; The Ladies’ Company Ensemble will sing “Lights” by

If I can provide literature that’s historically significant and uplifting and educates students at the same time, then why not?” The spring Variety Concert will be present by the Company Singers and Jazz Ensembles at IRSC’s McAlpin Fine Arts Center, 3209 Virginia Ave., Fort Pierce, March 5-7 at 7 p.m. and March 7 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for subscribers and $15 for non-subscribers.
