ST. LUCIE WEST — A new residential community centrally located in the heart of St. Lucie West is coming within the next couple of years. At its Jan. 27 meeting, the Port St. Lucie City Council unanimously approved the Lake Whitney Place project without question. The Planning and Zoning Board reviewed the major site plan ap-

The project consists of seven, two- and three-story multifamily apartment buildings with a total of 158 dwelling units and a one-story clubhouse. The site will include 346 parking spaces, which the city requires. The apartments will range from one to three bedrooms, the site application states. The 10.6-acre property is located on the north side of Lake Whitney Place, east of Peacock Boulevard, south of University Boulevard

ST. LUCIE WEST — Owners of one plaza in St. Lucie West expect an extra entrance to boost business. Within the next 60 days, the Shoppes at St. Lucie West will receive a new entrance into the western portion of the plaza, where The UPS Store, AT&T, Stevie B’s Pizza Buffet and Mattress Firm are located. A construction crew will connect the plaza to the adjacent Burger King parking lot for easy accessibility, said Matt Bloomfield, vice president of development for Menin Development, the firm that owns the shopping center. “Access is a bit challenging for this plaza,” Bloomfield said. “We think this is going to improve accessibility to this site and help existing tenants,” Bloom-

“Go to a Guy Who is Driven by Customer satisfaction.... Dear Neighbors, I lived and worked in Washington D.C. my entire life. About 4 years ago, my wife kept telling me that I was talking loud, turning up the TV volume very loud and frequently would not hear what other people were saying to me. So we had the dreaded discussion about “hearing aids”. I researched hearing aids extensively, and decided on Starkey brand and a particular model. I went to a large ENT practice in the DC area after several medical tests (along with high copays), I was handed off to a “technician” who ordered the hearing aids and determined without much consultation what features I would get. She spent about 15 minutes showing me the hearing aids, wished me good luck, and told me “any problems just give us a call back”. I was never happy with them. They cost several thousand dollars and I was totally disappointed. They sounded like I was listening through a funnel and they were uncomfortable. Sounds like traffic and wind and crowded restaurants were worse, not better with the aids. We moved to Saint Lucie West about 18 months ago and my wife saw the ads for Mutter’s Hearing Center and kept telling me I should go and have a professional evaluate my hearing. I scheduled an appointment. When I arrived they were: 1) on time, 2) very friendly, and 3) actually knew what they were talking about. After a complimentary exam and evaluation by Joe Mutter, he told me that he was surprised that I could hear anything with them at all. They had never been set up or adjusted properly from the beginning. He showed and explained why. After asking me about how I use the devices, he fitted and adjusted the electronics to my request. I heard better immediately. When he finished that 1st meeting I said “thanks” I will give you a call if I need anything else.

Max Krupo and Joe Mutter

He took the time to explain to me how they worked, how to maintain them and what to expect from the devices. He was exactly right. I actually wore the devices, up to 12 hours or more a day, then when I went back he would make adjustments to make them better. Each time they got closer to my natural hearing. I have had hearing aids for 4 years and it has only been in the last 6 months, since visiting Joe Mutter that I have actually started wearing them and enjoying normal conversation and tv volume levels, along with all of the simple everyday sounds I had been missing for years. Joe Mutter has the technical skills, training, the equipment and most importantly he actually listens to what you have to say. In the end, he makes sure you are happy with the devices and can hear better than you have in a long time. Please do yourself, your family and your friends a favor. Go to a guy who is driven by customer satisfaction rather than his monthly profit and loss statement. Give him a try. I am sure you will get the results you are hoping for.

STOP IN FOR A VISIT AND FIND OUT WHY JOE HAS BEEN VOTED #1 FOR MANY YEARS

VGTI Florida Excites Young Students with ‘Saturdays with Scientists’ Program FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

TRADITION t— Once again this year, the Vaccine & Gene Therapy Institute of Florida has partnered with the St. Lucie County School District to bring an exciting educational experience to students in local schools by providing a real-world science learning opportunity. “Saturdays with Scientists” was designed for fifth-grade students, and features a hands-on laboratory experience, highlighting a key scientific concept in their current science curriculum. Students get to work side by side with VGTI Florida scientists and learn how scientists actually work. Participating students spend two and a half hours working in a laboratory at VGTI Florida to perform actual experiments. Two VGTI Florida staff scientists assist with the experimental protocol and execution of the lesson plan. “We are proud to have the opportunity to be involved with and encourage the next generation of

According to police interviews with Lowe, the pair had an onand-off relationship for three and a half years before they married in July 2013. The two met on a dating website, police documents state. It is unknown what either did for a living. Daly, who did not own a firearm, spent three years in the Navy and Lowe, a former Army Captain spent 10 years in the Army. Lowe told police she received combat weapons and self-defense training and training in medical techniques. She attended the Citizen’s Police Academy in 2012. Both ran marathons together. Police documents state Lowe owned three firearms, mace, knives and had “installed a security system inside her home after past altercations with other men.” Past altercations include an October 2008 incident in Coral Springs with a man she met on a dating website. He was arrested, but the case wasn’t prosecuted. A month later, she married Daly, but the union wasn’t all wedded

SHOOTING from page A4

Valerie Ann Lowe mined Lowe waited 12 minutes after shooting Daly to call 911. Lowe said she put bottoms on Daly, who was not wearing pants, changed from her pajamas because she believed she would be taken into custody and put the gun in another room, so she would not be shot by police. Lowe told police she also turned on the porch lights and unlocked the front door for police. During a Feb. 7 police interview after the initial one with Lagrega, Lowe told police that she and Daly exchanged blows the night of the argument and denied saying she aimed low when shooting Daly. Lowe was a patient at New Horizons during the interview. New Horizons, located in Fort Pierce, is a facility that treats individuals for an array of conditions including substance abuse and mental illness. On Feb. 11 Lagrega and Assistant State Attorney Bernie Romero visited Lowe at New Horizons. Lowe told the two that she and Daly were slapping each other the night of the argument. Lagrega’s investigation of Lowe’s computer and cell phone uncovered recent activity on a dating website by Lowe and searches on quotas for life insurance policies, the warrant affidavit states. Palm Beach attorney Rubin Spinrad released a statement on Feb. 12 on behalf of Daly’s family. The Daly family thanked the media for respecting the family’s privacy and the detectives who worked the case. They also memorialized Daly as a gentle, God-fearing spirit. “Larry was a loving father, grandfather and brother who demonstrated a love of the Lord and lived his life accordingly,” the statement read. “As this unfortunate tragedy unfolds, we ask that you keep Larry’s memory in your hearts and minds.” “The act of taking Larry’s life and the circumstances surrounding his untimely death is certainly a tragic and unnecessary event,” it continued. “We ask that all those who knew Larry remember his acts of kindness and the love he had for his family and the Lord.”

bliss. Port St. Lucie Police responded to two domestic disturbances at the home located on Cleburn Drive in September and December. The two had a martial disagreement, but Daly left the home before officers arrived, Sabol said of the first call. Lowe accused Daly of being a bigamist, saying they weren’t legally married. In December, Lowe and her adult daughter had a dispute. There were no signs of a physical altercation and no arrests were made, Sabol said. During a police interview with Port St. Lucie Police Officer Sheila Lagrega, Lowe said Daly would verbally insult Lowe when he drank alcohol. The night of the killing, Lowe said she was in bed reading. Daly was sitting on the master bedroom couch playing a game on his cellular phone, Lagrega wrote in the warrant affidavit. “They were arguing over the fact he hadn’t paid her for the bills he is responsible for as he is to pay her by the first of the month,” Lagrega wrote. Daly began calling Lowe a whore and a b-tch, Lowe said. The two also argued over Daly’s ex-girlfriend and money he allegedly gifted the woman with. At one point during the argument, Lowe said Daly was standing directly in front of her. “She told him that he had 10 seconds to get out of her face,” the affidavit states. “She began counting and told him to get out of her face and that she didn’t like it. She stood up and he began waving his hands asking her ‘What are you going to do?’” Lowe told Lagrega he never actually struck her, the affidavit states. The arguing continued as Lowe tried to leave the room, Lowe said. Daly blocked her from leaving, Lowe told police. That’s when Lowe retrieved the .38 Caliber Smith & Wesson revolver from the nightstand. “He came back towards her and they were in the middle of the room. He balled his fist up again and drew back and she ‘Hit him,’” Lagrega said. “When she shot him, he went into ‘theatrics’ and began walking around in circles saying, ‘Oh, what Jesus, I’m coming to be with you, she shot me, I’m coming Lord, I’m coming now,’” the report states. Lowe told Lagrega that Daly fell to the floor and began snoring. She told police she thought he would be OK. Lowe told Lagrega she “didn’t go high near the heart or vital organs or anything like that. I just went low.” After watching Lowe’s home security system, Lagrega deter-

TRADITION — A serial pick pocket thief is off the streets. On Feb. 12, Port St. Lucie Police arrested Aaron Lee Adams, 29, of Cocoa, for grand theft and petty larceny stemming from a series of pickpocket incidents that took place between Feb. 1 and Feb. 12, Master Sgt. Frank Sabol said. Adams struck five times at the Walmart at 1850 S.W. Gatlin Blvd. and once at Publix in Tradition, located at 10400 S.W. Village Center Drive. All of Adams’ victims were women, Sabol said. Wallets were stolen from purses and in some cases, from sweater pockets, shop surveillance footage shows. On the day of his arrest, Walmart security saw Adams in the store. Surveillance cameras caught Adams take a wallet from an 81-year-old woman’s sweater pocket. “The elderly woman became suspicious of Adams and noticed her wallet was missing,” police said in a press release. “Adams played the incident off by giving the wal-

Aaron Lee Adams let back to the victim stating ‘you must have dropped this.’” Police arrived at the store and arrested Adams as he tried to leave through the garden section. Adams was caught on camera in a Tradition Publix on Feb. 1, where he stole from the purse of a 56-year-old woman. To keep from falling victim to a pick pocketing thief, Sabol said to keep a watchful eye over belongings while shopping. “Zip your purses up and put it on your shoulder,” Sabol said. “If you have a wallet, you should put it in the front pocket of your pants.”

The program takes place in the spring semester, comprised of two sessions for each St. Lucie county school zone. Twenty-five students participate in each session, and are chosen from applicants by the science teachers at each participating school. The goals of the Saturdays with Scientists program include reinforcing the student’s inclass lessons with real-world experimental procedures and to show the students how basic concepts taught in the classroom are used on a daily basis by scientists in the execution of their experiments. The program also presents an opportunity for researchers to provide role model experiences in an interactive learning environment. “The Saturdays with Scientists program is a win-win experience for all. The children get the experience of being a scientist in a real working lab setting while our community receives the benefit of more aspiring scientists entering an industry that will contribute to our overall health,” said Andrew Smith, Ph.D., one of the VGTI Florida researchers who works with the students in the

The developer also promised to design neighborhood streets that encourage pedestrian and bicycle travel by providing convenient routes to and from schools, parks and commercial facilities. “Paths and sidewalks are an integral part of the design of the community, providing connections between parcels, and allowing opportunities for seating areas, as well as active recreation,” the site application states. The parcel of land, which is not a wetland, appears to be clear of endangered wildlife, according to city documents. The applicant, however, plans to reinvestigate the potential presence of the threatened gopher tortoise before construction begins. “Although no listed species were observed nesting or foraging on-site at the time of the survey, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission guidelines require that a gopher tortoise survey be conducted no more than 90 days prior to land alteration activities,” documents state.

ST. LUCIE WEST — “We just hired three vets today.” That’s the proud pronouncement of John Jetson, CEO of Jetson Television & Appliance, a big, family-owned company headquartered in Fort Pierce. Jetson himself is an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, and he wastes no words in his support for veterans, and why he thinks they make the best employees. “I find that people who have been in service understand teamwork, responsibility and the chain of command,” he said. The kinds of jobs available are varied, said Susan Harris, director of publicity at Jetson. “It depends on the individual, and his or her skills,” she said. “We have openings for service technicians, delivery drivers, customer service associates and sales representatives. “We really want veterans, because of their experience in the military and in their lives.” Harris said the company has already begun hiring, and will

FORT PIERCE — Big Brothers Big Sisters invites you to The Fourteenth Annual “Taste of St. Lucie” presented by your West Palm-Fort Pierce Lexus dealers. The event will be held Wednesday, April 2, in historic downtown Fort Pierce. With live music, dancing, and a deejay on-site, you cannot go wrong. Imagine being able to sample over 40 of your all-time favorite restaurants, caterers, and food vendors in one fabulous, sunset venue at one tiny price? It’s just $40 per person and $70 a couple and that includes beer, wine or water all night long. And if that’s not enough – it’s all happening to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters, one of the area’s premier mentoring programs. The proceeds from the event benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring programs right here in our own community. Being a Big Brother or Big Sister is one of the most enjoyable things you’ll

ever do. Not to mention, one of the most fulfilling. You have the opportunity to help shape a child’s future for the better by empowering them to achieve. And the best part is, it’s actually a lot of fun. You and your little brother or sister can share the kinds of activities you already like to do. Play sports together. Go on a hike. Read books. Eat a pizza with extra anchovies. Or just give some advice and inspiration. Whatever it is you enjoy, odds are you’ll enjoy them even more with your Little - and you’ll be making a life-changing impact. Volunteering just a few hours a month with a child can start something amazing. So why not apply to be a Big Brother or Big Sister today? There are kids out there ready to get started. Are you? TREASURE COAST — Thanks to the William and Helen Thomas Charitable Trust, Helping People Succeed has received a $5,000 donation to be used as seed money for the beginning of a new “transition” program for young adults with autism spectrum disorder. Helping People Succeed kicked off its after-school programs for students with autism spectrum disorder more than two years ago. The classes first concentrated on middle school students and in the last two years, elementary and high school students have been added to the program. In addition, Helping People Succeed is developing an autism center on Florida Street between Old Dixie Highway and Johnson Avenue, where autism classes, counseling for parents and families, Music & Movement, yoga therapy and art therapy are coordinated. The transition program will focus on young adults (ages 17 – 21) who have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and who want to live and work independently. The William and Helen Thomas Charitable Trust honors a longtime philanthropic couple by supporting non-profit organizations that provide services in education, the environment, medical needs, the underprivileged and other charitable purposes. This is the

trust fund’s second donation to Helping People Succeed, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, celebrating its 50th Anniversary in March 2014. “Knowing Bill and Helen personally, it is with gratitude that Helping People Succeed accepts this gift,” said Glenna Parris, Gift Planning Officer. “They would have been proud of the fact that their legacy continues to live on and makes a difference in the thousands of lives who have been touched by the trust’s generosity.” The William and Helen Thomas Charitable Trust was created to maintain William and Helen Thomas’s commitment to philanthropy and to giving back to the community. Prior to his death in 2001, William Thomas was a salesman for ARCO Company and served as Board Chairman of Enabling Technologies. William Thomas was also a proponent of providing services for the blind. Helen Thomas worked as a nurse and was a staunch supporter of medical education. Helping People Succeed serves more than 4,500 families in Martin, St. Lucie, Okeechobee and Indian River counties. The organization offers a variety of programs and services from Baby Steps, Healthy Families and Music & Movement classes to Employment Options for adults with disabilities, Community Connections and Behavioral Health Systems, including local autism spectrum disorder programs.

ST. LUCIE WEST — Organized developments usually have homeowners’ associations. When they raise money, it’s usually to support their own activities — beautification of the grounds, and so forth. When is the last time anyone heard of one forming a club that raises money for veterans? The Men’s Club of the Cascade community, in St. Lucie West, not only does just that, but in the most fun way possible — at New York Mets spring-training games. “For the past seven years, we’ve been donating money to various veterans’ organizations,” said Charlie Krass, vice president of the Cascade Men’s Club, who is a Vietnam veteran. “During that time, we’ve donated well over $10,000 to various groups,” he said. They do it by manning a concession stand every year at Mets

games, selling hot dogs and drinks. Coming up, they’ll be manning the stand March 20, at Tradition Field, Port St. Lucie, during the Mets-Atlanta Braves matchup. The game starts at 1 p.m., but Krass and cohorts make a whole day of it. “I’m usually there by 9 a.m., and I ask the other guys to get there by 10. And we stay there right up till 4:30 p.m.,” Krass said. In the past, World War II veterans of advanced years have contributed their time “slinging hash.” Now, Krass said, it’s over to the younger generation — mostly Vietnam-era veterans and succeeding eras. This year, the club has decided to donate its fund-raising dollars to Disabled American Veterans Chapter 113, whose post commander, Donna Carlsen, recently became the recipient of the Four Chaplains Legion of Honor award (see Veterans Voice Weekly, Vol.

1000 times rarer than Diamonds Tanzanite is one of the most intriguing and sought after precious gemstones of modern times. From a single known source, deep in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, East Africa. Its infinite supply is expected to last just one generation. Discovered in 1967, it is a wonderful, unique, multidimensional colored stone it rad ates a kaleidoscope of royal blue, violet, indigo, lilac and periwinkle, and has enchanted discerning jewelry buyers seeking rarity and distinction. Tanzanite is a rare and precious gemstone variety of the mineral zoisite. While zoisite itself occurs widely, the random presence of vanadium in the same vicinity under exacting geological conditions more than 585 million years ago created the ideal environment for tanzanite’s conception. Tanzanite’s formation is so rare that it has been described as being ‘more astounding than the stone itself ’, a geological phenomenon.

JUST ONE GENERATION

This geology is rendered even more phenomenal by the fact that the source is limited to a single generation. Those fortunate enough to already own tanzanite, and those who acquire it in the next decade or so will be the only first-time owners. Thereafter, tanzanite will become a precious heirloom.

UNPARALLELED SCARCITY

Diamonds By Terry has designed a one of a kind necklace containing a rare gem quality oval Tanzanite weighing 19.76cts. The size alone is extremely rare in it’s self, not to mention it is set in platinum with 70 round brilliant diamonds weighing 2.55cts VVS-F-G in color. Please come by and view this once in a lifetime treasure you can see it at Diamonds By Terry on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10am-5pm.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Experience the Broadway musical interpretation of the world’s first modern novel in Don Quixote’s “Man of LaMancha” at the Sunrise Theatre on Friday, Feb. 21 at 8 p.m. Written by Miguel de Cervantes, this lyrical and amusing adventure is a classic tale of the triumph of man over his follies. “Man of LaMancha” has had a phenomenally successful run in New York for five years, surpassing the original run of Oklahoma and South Pacific. In the “two hour traffic of the stage” and more than 20 rousing song hits, the show crystallizes the thousand episode-crammed pages in which Cervantes exposes the absurdities of his day. Enter the mind and the world of Don Quixote as he pursues his quest for the impossible dream. Against all odds, a man sees good and innocence in a world filled with darkness and despair. Don’t

miss this superb, imaginative, original and moving musical. “Man of LaMancha” restores one’s faith in and love of theater. Gather toGether at our place, your way VETERANS from page A12 Stuart. This year, Jetson celebrates its 40th year in business. The company was begun by John Jetson and his brother, Scott, under what is known as the “4S” principle — savings, service, selection and satisfaction, according to the company website, jetsononline. com. “Since 1988 Jetson TV & Appliance Stores has ranked in TWICE magazine’s Top100 TV and appliance dealers nationally, and recently cracked the top 40, the ranks of which are usually dominated by national chains,” the website states. Jetson also stays active within the community, Harris said. “Every year near Veterans Day, we host our Annual Barbecue, where we have bands, barbecue, free samples and speakers,” she said. “Booths are available for any vendor who wants to participate.” In 2013, a ‘60s-style band played, and attorney Hugh Eighmie gave free will and insurance reviews as well as answering general legal questions. “And for the first time ever, the VA was allowed to set up a booth to get information out on their programs,” Harris said. Coming up on March 1, Jetson will host its third annual Highwaymen Art Show, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 4145 South U.S. 1, Fort Pierce. John Jetson is a collector of the works by the noted Florida Highwaymen, a group of 26 black artists who painted varied scenes of the Florida landscape from the 1950s through the 1980s.

“They painted from their garages and backyards on inexpensive Upson board, and then on the weekends they would travel and sell their paintings to hotels, offices, businesses and individuals who appreciated the artwork for around $25 apiece,” according to floridahighwaymenpaintings.com. Nowadays, their paintings sell on average for $5,000, according to the website. Some of the artists still painting today will be on hand at Jetson’s event, to speak with or to purchase a painting (which, depending on size, may not be as pricey as the average). Additionally, there will be chefcooked, North Carolina-style pulled pork, and other companies will offer Florida salsa and juice samples. Highwaymen collector Roger Lightlie will be on hand to offer copies of his Highwaymen book and to answer questions. Staying in touch with the community is a part of the Jetson tradition, Harris said, and veterans are a big part of that tradition. “We put a veterans’ insignia everywhere our name is mentioned,” John Jetson said. The company logo features an American flag and the phrase “Owned & Operated by U.S. Veterans.” For him, hiring vets and hosting events for them are an inseparable part of his business. “It’s my way of saying thanks for a job well done,” he said.

Here at The Brennity at Tradition, you can continue living the life you’ve worked so hard for, on your own terms. Enjoy the freedom to participate in as many events and activities as you’d like, or spend your days in leisure. The choice is yours at our beautiful community.

Call (772) 345-2700 or stop by today to learn more about our redefined retirement.

Veterans interested in working at Jetson can contact the company at 1-800-330-7050, or fax a resume to (772) 257-7088. They can also contact Susan Harris by e-mail at susan@jetsononline.com.

Two kids, one disease, one big community hug

LOOKING FOR A DENTAL HOME?

FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

Perhaps you’ve been to the mountain or the coast, hoping to find a gentle experience. Maybe you were tempted with an ivy league ad that offered a super discount. Then, you walked in all smiles, only to find that your great smile needed thousands to repair and your great expression disappeared. If you feel lost in the land of dentistry, perhaps a clearer view that makes sense to you would be helpful. Come to Midway Dental Center for a friendly second opinion…no charge, no obligation!

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Elice Sena and Julian Fraga have something in common, but it’s not something good. Both children are in the battle of a lifetime against the meanest monster ever — cancer. Just eight years old, Elice loves school and reading almost as much as she loves spending time with her younger brother and sister. Her mom calls Elice, “Our first blessing.” Julian Fraga is the youngest of three siblings, and he loves school and art. Unfortunately, Elice and Julian can’t go to school and enjoy class with their school chums; they’re too busy with chemotherapy, blood work, and trying to stay positive despite the brutal treatments they’re on to help them get better. These two little kids are fighting a big battle, and they could use one big community-wide hug of support and love. Wednesday, Feb. 26, the Van Duzer Foundation, along with Elice and Julian’s teachers and

Dr. Strawn and his supportive staff will be happy to answer all your questions and find affordable options.

classmates at Westgate K-8 school, will be hosting an evening of fun and pizza to help raise funds and spirits for Elice and Julian. From 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., every slice of pizza, soda, sub, salad, wing, and garlic knot sold at Big Apple Pizza will mean a donation to help Elice and Julian’s families get over some pretty tough times. Not only will 100 percent of your purchase that evening go to help these two kids and their families, everyone cooking and serving your food that evening will be donating their salaries and tips to help these families. Plus, Traxx Entertainment will be on hand to keep the party going, and Chuck and Lori’s Entertainment will provide bounce houses for the little ones. One Blood will also be on hand, gratefully accepting blood donations and helping register volunteers who would like to help save lives through blood or bone marrow donations. It will be an evening of fun, family,

ST. LUCIE WEST — Dr. Ajay Goyal, radiologist and owner of Diagnostic Radiology Center of the Treasure Coast, is proud to welcome Gerald Grubbs, M.D., as the newest addition to our radiology staff. Grubbs’ expertise will be with prostate MRI scans. Using MRI is a non–invasive way to evaluate patients for prostate cancer. Grubbs’ credentials include a degree from University of Tennessee, fellowship in cardiovascular and interventional radiology at Baptist Hospital of Miami and board bertification in interventional radiology from the American Board of Radiology. He remains one of the leading pioneers of Interventional Radiology. For nearly 10 years Grubbs has demonstrated great virtuosity, completing over 5,000 prostate MRI readings. Grubbs is a co-founder of the DynaCAD 3.0 software used in conjunction with the UroNav fusion biopsy system. This system, which uses electromagnetic tracking, combines MRI images of the prostate with ultrasound in real time. This technique of fusing MRI and ultrasound together provides an enhanced visual of the prostate gland and precise navigation of the biopsy needle to the suspicious lesion. Prostate biopsy has never been as easy or accurate as it is now with the UroNav. As the first interventional radiologist to introduce the UroNav system in the state of Florida, Grubbs has worked closely with urolo-

Sister returns for summer school Shelley Koppel Staff writer

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

FORT PIERCE — Sister is not very happy. Instead of going on a retreat, she is teaching summer school to a bunch of miscreants who don’t appreciate what it’s like to wear heavy robes in the summer. That’s the premise behind this installment of the popular “Sister” shows. This one, “Sister’s Summer School Catechism,” will be presented at the Sunrise Theatre Feb. 28-March 2. Nonie Riley, who plays Sister, has performed in all seven of the shows in the “sister” franchise. She is a veteran of Chicago’s famed Second City Theatre, a training that has stood her well in her roles as Sister. “Second City is improve and you do eight shows a week,” she said. “It’s great training for thinking on your feet. You have to pay attention to what people are saying.” Riley is well-known in Florida as Nonie Newton-Breen; a recent marriage has changed her name, but not her sense of humor.

“Sister is not happy,” she said. “Summer school is for people that goofed around and got into trouble. She’s a little more stern and the ruler comes out, but we’re not allowed to use it.” As in all the “Sister” shows, the audience is a big part of the program. “Phones go off, people are chewing gum or they’re pawing their wives and girlfriends,” Riley said. “You stop what you’re doing and deal with it. You can’t just give them a pass. People don’t like to get picked on, but they really enjoy watching their neighbors get picked on.” At one point in the show, audience members are asked to fill out a card: ‘Dear Baby Jesus, I’m sorry I disappointed you by …’ “We read them and it’s pretty funny,” Riley said. “It pays off big time. Trust me on this one. Some sign their names and it’s wickedly funny, the stuff they put down. I read the cards and stare at them. It’s a lot of fun” While Riley comes from a large

It’s not made in China. It’s a part of our culture and I’d hate to see it go away. My show feels like everyone’s involved. It’s not a one-person show. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Are you ready to make a Dyer Difference? When Will and Tatiana Dyer found paradise and arrived in Florida in 2008, they already had a history of philanthropy and community caring from their home in Ohio. As the owners of Dyer Chevrolet, Mazda, Subaru in Vero Beach and passionate about wanting to continue a tradition of community giving and supporting those who make the area a better place to live, they created a program called the “Dyer Difference.” Each month, a worthy nonprofit organization was acknowledged and celebrated for its community service, spirit and compassion and was awarded a $3,000 check to help continue improving and assisting the community. Fast-forward to 2014, and the caring staff at Dyer Automotive Group is bringing the Dyer Difference to St. Lucie County. With the purchase of the former Bill Shultz Chevrolet on U.S.1 in Fort Pierce just north of Midway Road, nominations are now being accepted for the Dyer Difference Award in St. Lucie County. If you know a nonprofit organization doing tremendous things and helping to make St. Lucie County a better

community, please consider nominating them for a Dyer Difference Award by visiting www.dyerdifference.org and clicking on the St. Lucie County link. Once a month, members of the Dyer Automotive Group team will meet to select one nonprofit organization to celebrate and award with a $3,000 check. Organizations nominated must meet the criteria and show current 501(c)3 status and must be located in St. Lucie County, but the nomination form is simple, user-friendly, and easy to complete for organizations of any size. Nominations are good for a six-month period, and an organization can be recognized with the Dyer Difference Award once per calendar year. If you’d like to nominate an organization or learn more about the Dyer Difference, please visit www.dyerdifference.org today. The deadline for the next award is Feb. 28, so stop by today and show your support of the many caring, committed, community nonprofit organizations in St. Lucie County. Your simple nomination might help them continue the important work they’re doing in St. Lucie County and help continue the legacy of love created by the Dyer family with the Dyer Difference Award. Are you ready to help make a Dyer Difference?

WHAT IS FLORIDA ALL ABOARD? THIRTY TWO passenger trains traveling daily from Miami to Orlando, through our towns, between 7:00 a.m.—11:00 p.m. There are no scheduled stops between West Palm Beach and Orlando! They will simply pass through our towns 32 times per day! With the freight trains, you can expect up to 50 trains per day staring in 2015!

WHAT COULD THIS MEAN TO YOU? • Major increase in traffic congestion, air and noise pollution! • Property values will be seriously impacted! • Boaters west of the Roosevelt Bridge will no longer have unlimited access to the oceans and sand bars as we know today! The train bridge will be down A LOT!!!! • Marine related businesses west of the bridge will be devastated! • Downtowns will be bombarded with trains constantly rolling through our once beautiful tourist destinations. • Loss of revenue to our community! • Cross the rail tracks on the way to work? Expect longer commute times! SOLUTION! Why not lease the CSX tracks to the west? Using the CSX tracks means no additional congestion in our towns, boaters still have access to the ocean, businesses can still prosper and AAF can transport passengers from Miami to Orlando. WIN—WIN! (Kim) “DeLaney said eventually we may see less freight traffic on the FEC tracks anyway. Links between the FEC and the more westerly CSX tracks could allow freight to travel up the central spine of Florida through Lakeland rather than along the coast.”
