PORT ST. LUCIE — The young men who risked their own well-being rescuing a 92-yearold man who drove his car into a lake along Bethany Avenue in St. Lucie West in December, were honored at City Hall Jan. 26. Alton Brieske, an FAU pre-med student, and Michael Markisello, an inactive Marine, were waiting on lunch at Hurricane Grill and heard a call for help from a woman who witnessed the incident. They rushed over and worked together to break Sal Mancuso’s

car window and free him. Despite their heroic efforts, which gained national attention, Mancuso died two days later at Tradition Medical Center. Both were modest at the Council meeting. “I really didn’t want to be recognized for this. I just feel like this is something anybody should do when someone is in a time of need, like Mr. Mancuso was,” Brieske said. He thanked his parents for their influence. “The the way I was raised is a big part of what I do and why I did what I did.”

That state is back to jobs numbers last seen in April of 2008, shortly before a sharp rise in unemployment that didn’t stop for two years and peaked at 11.4 percent in the first quarter of 2010. Hearing properly feeds the brain and it’s ability to understand human speech. Hearing keeps the brain sharp and on it’s toes. If your hearing goes, your brain function is sure to follow. We know that a quality hearing aid, built and designed to give you the best hearing experience possible, is not available for a couple hundred dollars. Oh sure there are $200 hearing aids out there, but nothing that we would ever stock in our office.

“Joe was the first one who could make hearing possible and comfortable. He was patient and kind,” said Dr. Costas. “Joe sat with Aunt Mary until she was comfortable using them and then he made her come back multiple times until he was satisfied. He saved Aunt Mary from a nursing home
Buhrman had tried several hearing aids costing several thousands of dollars but when she met Joe Mutter and tried her hearing aids for the first time, the whole world changed. “I fell down on my knees and thanked God for bringing me to that miracle man, Joe Mutter,”

Youngsters take oath to patriot group FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
TREASURE COAST — Patriotism starts early. The Sons of the American Revolution, St. Lucie River Chapter which includes St. Lucie, Martin, and Okeechobee counties, had a very special investiture at their January meeting. John Auld, chapter president, swore in and pinned the youngest members ever into the local chapter. Five-year-old Maverick Earl Hawley and 1-yearold Sawyer Nash Hawley, of Port St. Lucie, were sworn in as members of the Sons of the American Revolution. Their ancestor is Patriot Thomas Hardy, a private in Captain John Banister’s company, Colonel Job Cushing’s Massachusetts Regiment, during the Revolutionary War. The boys are the sons of Edward and Melissa Hawley of Port St. Lucie and nephews of SAR Vice President and Stuart resident John Sheppard. This special moment illustrates the commemoration of our patriots who fought in that for our freedom from foreign taxation and tyranny in the War of Independence. Each patriot left a legacy to the very youngest of us to remember, protect and forever uphold the ideals for which the American Revolutionaries fought. The Hawley brothers both took and acknowledged this oath.

RE: Your Jan. 30 article ‘Oravec: We need to market PSL better’ While I applaud Mayor Oravac for deciding to not focus on logos and tag lines; rather than look to marketing, I think a better use of resources would be to tackle education. Until the entire county decides to address the two major problems, education and crime, you will be hard-pressed to attract new businesses. Port St. Lucie is currently ranked 60th out of 68 school districts in the Florida. See link http://www.schooldigger.com/ go/FL/districtrank.aspx. Fort Pierce is ranked No. 64 of the top 100 of the nation’s most dangerous cities. See link huffingtonpost.com/2013/12/31/ most-dangerous-cities-flor-
ida_n_4524866.html When a potential business owner looks to relocate his company, big or small, he not only looks for tax breaks etc. he looks for an area with a good solid school system as that’s where his work force will come from. Also, I doubt if too many businesses are interested in moving into a county that has a city ranked as the 64th most dangerous city in the US. I do believe both the school and crime situation can be corrected. It will take a concentrated effort by the entire community. Jim Cooper, St. Lucie West resident

Credit card skimmer found at gas station in St. Lucie West ST. LUCIE WEST — A credit card skimmer was found at a fuel pump at the Mobile gas station along Commerce Center Drive in St. Lucie West. A vendor was doing regular maintenance on the pump Jan. 29 when he noticed the device and notified the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, according to a press release. Detectives said the card reader had no visible damage, making it hard for customers to see any difference. Sheriff Mascara said this is a growing problem everywhere and people should be vigilant with checking their credit card and bank statements.
Here are some tips from the FBI on how to avoid being skimmed: • Inspect the ATM, gas pump, or
credit card reader before using it … be suspicious if you see anything loose, crooked, or damaged, or if you notice scratches or adhesive/tape residue. • When entering your PIN, block the keypad with your other hand to prevent possible hidden cameras from recording your number. • If possible, use an ATM at an inside location (less access for criminals to install skimmers). • Be careful of ATMs in tourist areas … they are a popular target of skimmers. • If your card isn’t returned after the transaction or after hitting “cancel,” immediately contact the financial institution that issued the card.

According to The Economist, credit card skimming is more prevalent in the United States than European nations for multiple reasons. There are physically more credit, debit and prepaid cards in the U.S. than any nation at 1.2 billion and the total number of ATMs is at 450,000. What makes the U.S. a bigger target for crooks is the cards themselves. The U.S. is the only developed nation with cards using a magnetic strip rather than a chip paired with a PIN, which is more secure. The investigation is ongoing.

Cable service confusion a real party pooper Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The St. Lucie County Republican Party’s operations are back to normal after having to shut down shop for about a week. The Party’s Chairman Bill Paterson said the hubbub was from a misunderstanding with Comcast. During the election season, Paterson said he increases services with Comcast – higher internet
speed, more phones – and, after the election ends, he goes back to normal operations. Evidently, someone on staff working in Tallahassee told Comcast to cancel their service, thinking the St. Lucie County Republican Party only stays active for a few months during the election – like many of the groups statewide. “A Comcast employee called me and asked if we wanted to shut down the services, and I said ‘absolutely not. Just restore our old services,” Paterson said.
The employee told Paterson that their conversation was recorded in case they needed to reference the agreement, Paterson said. “I said ‘that was good, we dodged a bullet,’” Paterson said. “Well, Peter didn’t tell Paul, and unbeknownst to me, they decided to cancel it,” Paterson said. “ After hours of being on the phone with Comcast representatives, Paterson said the soonest a technician could restore services was on Monday. “When people called us this last

IMMIGRATION from page A3 to help up to 4.4 million people, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Ricci, an immigration attorney with Rambana & Ricci in Tallahassee, will be holding a seminar from 10 a.m. until noon Feb. 7 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Academy along Indian River Drive in Fort Pierce. “As far as I know, we’ll be the first nationally to have a mobile office like this. We’ll take an RV on the road and give seminars at churches and to civic groups. We’ll prepare candidates for DACA filing and other processes. The R.V. will have Wi-Fi, a copier, a printer and the ability to take passport-style photos. Because immigration is federal, we can practice in any state and plan on concentrating on the south east,” Ricci said. The result will be a GDP increase of more than $250,000, additional tax revenues of $3.2 billion and money pumped into governments from driver’s license fees. Each candidate will be told confidentially whether they qualify for either of the programs. “In addition, each attendee will
learn what type of evidence to submit to (U.S. Customs and Border Protection), costs and fees and strategies for long-term legalization,” she said. The seminars are free. Candidates will learn whether they qualify at no charge, like a free consultation. “Applicants who qualify can hire our services at a discounted rate. Our in-office rate is $500 but our rate for circuit attendees is $300,” Ricci said. Ricci said her goal is to stop the flow of misinformation and help as many potential clients as possible. “We also warn immigrants about the dangers of using notaries (In Spanish the word ‘notario’ means attorney. Unfortunately, unscrupulous notaries public hold themselves out as “notaries” and give legal advice not only committing third degree felonies themselves, but leaving innocent immigrants without status or recourse. We try to educate groups about the dangers of ‘notaries,’” Ricci said. Attendees are encouraged to bring proof of presence in the US, ID, children’s birth certificates and or proof of residency. Although the seminars are free, space is limited and RSVPs are required.

in Martin were suicides in 2013. There were an unknown number of attempted suicides and narrowly foiled ones in the two counties that year. St. Lucie County had a suicide rate below the state average in 2013, a crude rate of 14.4 per 100,000 people. Martin had a rate above the state average for three consecutive years as of 2013. That year, the rate was 21.5 per 100,000 people. In 2013, there were 2,892 suicide deaths in Florida, a rate of 15 per 100,000 people. There were about 180,000 deaths in the state in 2013. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that in 2013 suicide was the 10 leading cause of death in the nation, at a rate of about 12.6 deaths per 100,000 people. To put it in perspective, kidney disease edged out suicide for ninth place, and it followed influenza and pneumonia, along with diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and strokes. The leading cause of death in 2013 was heart disease, 169.8 deaths per 100,000 people. But as hurricane forecasters are wont to say, “The only number you need to be concerned about is one.” It only takes one storm during the Atlantic hurricane season to cause numerous deaths, injuries and lost homes. Every one of those suicides affected innumerable people in unknowable ways. While the walk and educational program are a fundraiser for the foundation, it’s open to all. “It’s not required to offer money, people can come and walk in the name of someone they lost,” Marshall said. The Treasure Coast walk is one of about 300 planned. This year, the foundation expects about 100,000 walkers will help raise about $17.5 million. Marshall said that men at re-

tirement age are the most likely to commit suicide. She said there are many reasons why. However, she said the largest reason is humanity’s innate need to be needed. “A big factor is feeling worthwhile in your life,” she said. The centers estimate that men are about four times more likely than women to successfully commit suicide. Men account for about 80 percent of all suicide deaths. One reason for that is men seem more likely to use the suicide tool that’s the most effective: guns. About 56 percent of men who kill themselves use firearms. Marshall said one of the most important tools to prevent suicide is talking and non-judgmental listening. “I hear that you can’t say ‘suicide’ to the doctor or you’ll go to the hospital,” she said. That’s not necessarily true, Marshall said. “There’s a continuum when it comes to suicide,” she said. “There’s sticking your toe in the water to picking a day and saying ‘I’m going to do it by this means.’ There can be a lot of steps in between.” Marshall added, “What I always tell my clients that almost everyone has had this thought of wanting to disappear or just fall off the planet. It’s a symptom of something else bigger that’s going on.” By talking, she said, folks can identify what’s making them sad and address those problems. Check in for the walk starts at 9 a.m. The walk starts at 10 a.m. More Than Sad begins at noon. The park is at 201 S.W. Flagler Ave. Those who register for the walk will get lunch. TRADITION — Bruce Fong is facing three burglary and three grand theft charges from July of burglarizing unoccupied homes, but that apparently hasn’t slowed him down. Keeping with the pattern, Fong, 39, was arrested Jan. 31 and charged with burglarizing a home along Southwest Meeting Street in Tradition. His arrest came just three days after a hearing for his July charges. The more recent investigation began Jan. 30 when the home’s

FONG from page A12 caretaker said he noticed a stove worth about $1,000 was missing from the residence. He notified the owner, who advised the caretaker to call police, which he did. The caretaker also noticed a washer and dryer combo, worth about $1,200, was moved from the laundry room wall, appearing to be prepped to be taken at a later time. Police photographed the unit, taking note of fingerprint markings and dents on the side, according to the arrest affidavit. Later that afternoon, after everyone had left the property, the caretaker checked the house again and found that the washer/dryer was missing.
The next day, police responded to a Craigslist post, advertising a lightly used washer/dryer combo for $390 that appeared to be the same one they photographed the day before. Police linked the phone number listed on the ad to Fong and called him to schedule a meeting. An undercover officer met with Fong at his residence, and the two talked about the appliance. The officer determined it was the same washer/dryer that was stolen. He then negotiated Fong down to $330, just because, and called in a unit to make the arrest. Fong is facing two burglary counts, two grand theft counts and one count of dealing with stolen property count.

Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer. Symptoms usually appear in the latest stages, when it is the deadliest. Low-dose CT lung cancer screening programs for current and former smokers can detect lung cancer at the earliest stages before symptoms appear, improving the cure rate to as high as 90 percent. – Martin Health System is now offering a low-dose CT screening test for only $99 for those at high risk.

JOBS from page A1 of 2007 before then. Victorio said some job hunters on the Treasure Coast are still feeling pessimistic despite the proliferation of help wanted signs and ads. “We have a little (post-traumatic stress disorder) when we think about what we went through the last few years,” she said. But double-digit unemployment that persisted in some areas of the state until last year is gone. The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity reported that in December Hendry County had the highest unemployment rate of state’s 67 counties, 8.4 percent not seasonally adjusted, followed by Flagler, 7.6, but There was no county with double-digit unemployment for December or November. Martin County has fared the best of the four counties in the CareerSource Research Coast four-county region. It wrapped 2014 with the gold medal, a not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate at 5.3 percent. “The last time we were at 5.3 in Martin County, I think was 2003,” Victorio said. While Indian River grabbed the silver with 6 percent not-seasonally adjusted unemployment, St. Lucie County edged out Okeechobee for the bronze, with 6.2 percent over 6.3. Overall, the CareerSource Research Coast region ended 2014 with a 5.9

percent not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate. St. Lucie and Martin counties form the Port St. Lucie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The MSA also had a 5.9 percent not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate. At the end of 2013, the not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 7.3 percent. The MSA now has about 194,000 participating workers. Slightly more than 183,000 had jobs in December. The unemployment rate is calculated using a variety of methods. Among them are telephone interviews with workers. Those that are able to work and report not having jobs, but looked for employment in the previous 30 days, are counted as unemployed. Discouraged workers — those who are able to work and want jobs, but have not sought employment in the previous 30 days — are not counted in the unemployment figure. Many call this “shadow unemployment,” and it’s inherently difficult to track due to variations for why people don’t seek jobs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the national labor participation rate — the percentage of those able to work, or seek jobs, that do, edged downward over the year from 63 percent to 62.7 percent. Participation rates are affected by a variety of factors that can be seen as positives and negatives. Florida and the Treasure Coast have had an increasing number of workers and lowering unemployment.

You may qualify for a homestead exemption, as well as others FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — If you own and permanently reside in your home as of Jan. 1, 2015, did you know that you may qualify for a homestead exemption? A homestead exemption can save you hundreds of dollars off your annual property tax bill. Deadline to file for a 2015 homestead exemption is March 2. “Homestead exemption reduces the taxable value by up to $50,000 which will save the taxpayer approximately $750 off their property taxes annually,” said Ken Pruitt, St. Lucie County Property Appraiser. “Our commitment is to ensure that all taxpayers receive the property tax exemptions for which they are entitled.” Once a homeowner has applied for and received a homestead exemption, the exemption will be automatically renewed for that property on Jan. 1 of each year; some exceptions may apply. Properties that receive homestead exemption qualify under the Save Our Homes Amendment and may realize additional benefits. If you have homestead exemption on your property, you may also qualify for: • Additional exemption for per-

The new model center will open on Feb. 16 and will feature the new Bridgeport model — a three-bedroom, two-bath, den, two-car garage with 2,306 square feet of living area under air from just $264,990. But if you are looking for a larger home, the Sawgrass floorplan, is the perfect home — 2,987-squarefoot home under air with three bedrooms, a den, two and a half baths and a two-car garage with both a formal living room/family room and two great room floorplan options — from just $329,990. The design was the winner of the Treasure Coast Builders Association Platinum Award Winner from the 2014 Treasure Coast Parade of Homes. For more information or to schedule a preview appointment, contact Deb LeBleu at (772) 2571100 Ext. 5. Also, there is Meadowood, a gated golf and tennis community in western St. Lucie County. Smithsonian lecture series to focus on our environment FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The Smithsonian Marine Station opens its annual Marine Science Lectures Series at the Pelican Yacht Club on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. with Dr. Ilka Feller, senior scientist at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater, Md. Feller has been studying mangroves for 20 years in Florida, Panama, Belize and Australia and is currently using the Smithsonian Marine Station as home for a major, collaborative research project. During her lecture, “Mangroves Marching North: How Fast, How Far, and at What Cost?,” Feller will discuss her research team’s efforts to better understand the impacts a changing environment may have on mangroves, the salt marshes they are encroaching on and all the organisms that depend on both habitats to survive. Additional lectures in the series
include: • Thursday, March 12 — Dr. Jos Verhoeven, Utrecht University, The Netherlands: “Reclaiming, Using, and Protecting Wetlands: How the Dutch Created The Netherlands” • Thursday, April 2 — Dr. Nancy Knowlton, Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History: “Moving Beyond the Obituaries: Success Stories in Ocean Conservation” The Smithsonian Marine Station at Fort Pierce is pleased to once again partner with the Pelican Yacht Club to offer the Smithsonian Marine Science Lecture Series to the Treasure Coast community. As a part of the world’s largest museum and research complex, SMS hosts many of the Smithsonian’s most exemplary researchers in the natural sciences, and this year’s speakers are no exception. TREASURE COAST — For 35 years, SafeSpace has served victims of domestic violence on the Treasure Coast. As the area’s only certified domestic violence shelter, SafeSpace has been able to offer emergency support to women and their children in life threatening situations. Their programs have helped to heal and elevate victims of abuse, both men and women, as well as their families. Now the organization is proud to add supported living to the services that it can provide to women as they evolve from victim to survivor. Using a state capital improvement grant of $440,000 as a springboard to launch a capital campaign, SafeSpace has invested the early proceeds into their buildings in Indian River and
Martin counties. In Indian River, the shelter has been transformed to make supported living available for women without children. These women, who generally will have come to SafeSpace through the emergency shelters in both counties, will be able to reside in the supported living program for up to 18 months while they take steps toward independence through programs offered, as well as seek employment if needed. “Too often victims of abuse who come to domestic violence shelters like SafeSpace will return to their former home and find themselves victims again at the hands of their abuser,” said Jill Borowicz, CEO of SafeSpace. “Financial dependence often plays a role in that decision, so supported living services will help many survivors get a fresh start, have a safe and affordable place to live, and continue to take advantage of
our life-changing programs.” The Indian River facility will continue to offer emergency support to victims of domestic violence 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The full line of programs also remains available to victims and their families, as well as the outreach and education programs that focus on prevention and awareness. But now the facility can house up to 12 women in the supported living program, helping to fill a serious void in this type of service on the Treasure Coast. The Martin County facility has also received an upgrade. An addition to that shelter has raised the capacity to 48 beds for women and their children who face life-threatening abuse and require emergency support. All of the other programs previously

YMCA from page A22 achieve my dreams as a competitive athlete that it will be a privilege to help others do the same,” said Schultz, who has cerebral palsy. He continues to compete in time trials and has recently taken up duathlons. The YMCA is a cause-driven charity that focuses on youth development, social responsibility and healthy living. As with all YMCA programs, people who cannot afford to pay will not be turned away, Foster said. “We provide nearly $300,000 in scholarships each year,” she said, noting that the Wicina endowment actually launches the Y’s

The Smithsonian Marine Station teamed with St. Lucie County and other community partners to create the Smithsonian Marine Ecosystems Exhibit, located in the St. Lucie County Aquarium at 420 Seaway Drive on South Hutchinson Island in Fort Pierce. For those funded through the Jeffrey Wicina Memorial Endowment, “the Y will do the necessary assessments and provide trained staff to accommodate participants’ needs as appropriate,” Foster said. To meet the needs of the entire community, this year’s fundraising goal is $260,500, she said. “As this partnership shows, we can really leverage our resources to make a big difference in the lives of all our residents.” For more information, call Charlene Foster at (772) 286-4444, Ext. 235. The facility can now support as many as 12 women in the Supportive Living Program. Even though the facility is located in Indian River County, it will serve women from all over the Treasure Coast.
SAFESPACE from page A28 offered in Martin County remain available for victims and their families, as well. “These physical changes to both of our facilities will enable us to elevate the level of support and the blanket of safety that we provide to victims throughout the Treasure Coast. Emergency services, our wide range of programs for victims and their families, our new supported living services, and our efforts around prevention and education enable us to have even greater impact as we help victims of domestic violence become survivors,” said Borowicz. SafeSpace is a nonprofit organization that operates programs in Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River counties where families can
escape to a safe environment. SafeSpace offers victims of domestic violence safety, support and education, empowering them to create an independent life free from violence. Emergency shelter, supportive living, and outreach programs and services are available for victims throughout the Treasure Coast. PORT ST. LUCIE — Jeremy LaBianca knows Italian cuisine, and the former partner at Anthony V’s in Tradition has set up shop along Southwest Port St. Lucie Boulevard. Labby’s Pizza and Pasta has been open for about five months, and word is getting around — mostly because of a 30-inch pizza that is attracting customers from all over the Treasure Coast. LaBianca — who said he named the restaurant “Labby’s” as a take-off on his last name — said he’s even had a family travel 90 minutes from Merritt Island just for the mammoth pie. I went with three others last Friday for an early dinner. I walked in and was greeted by LaBianca, working at the counter. It’s easy to rally behind the guy. He and his staff are friendly as can be, and we talked about the Little Italy Fest in Tradition that he cooked for. He gets an extra nod from me for admiring my neck of the woods, Pittsburgh, (shameless plug: Go Steelers!) which we somehow got to talking about after I pointed out a vintage Yuengling beer sign in the casual, or “urban,” as he called it, dining area.

LABBY’S from page B1 He also talked a bit about his two children — of whom the logo features — and his passion for food. “I play daddy, and I play restaurant owner,” he said. The rest of my party arrived, and we sat in the more formal, family-friendly half of the restaurant. It’s a mellow, calming room with tan walls, dim lights and bar with five beers on tap. As customary with Your Voice reviews, we sampled several dishes. We started with the fresh, homemade mozzarella sticks. The mozzarella sticks ($8.99 for six, with marinara sauce) were the best I’ve ever had. They weren’t too greasy, and one of my guests said you could tell they weren’t your typical frozen appetizers. The cheese was my favorite part. LaBianca said he orders Grande brand cheese from Wisconsin. “I only use the best ingredients I can get my hands on. It’s the best quality cheese you can buy,” LaBianca said. We also had some chicken bruschetta ($8.99), the newest appetizer offered at Labby’s. The fresh ingredients stood out, here. The grilled chicken breast was topped with chopped tomatoes and onions, fresh mozzarella and a balsamic glaze drizzle. It was
YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS • ST. LUCIE WEST/TRADITION • FEBRUARY 6, 2015• B3 a perfect, light offering before dinner. Each of also had a cup of LaBianca’s homemade tomato basil bisque, with the chunky tomatoes adding a nice bite. Next, we shared some tortellini and lobster ravioli, each covered in a sherry cream sauce. Each was a hit, and again, the cheese stood out — fresh, creamy and leaving you wanting more, if your stomach has room. They were both cooked al dente. The sauce had nice balance between tomato and cream; not too heavy. I was only half joking when I asked LaBianca if I could have a gallon of it to go. Each of the entrees can be had for $13.99, and they come with a salad and either garlic knots or soup. Labby’s also has Pasta Wednesdays — any two pasta entrees for $20. “I’m giving the highest quality of food at a very moderate price — a middle-income, family-friendly price,” LaBianca said. And of course, if not just to see it in person, we got a 30-inch pizza ($24.99 for cheese; $2 per topping, per half). It’s massive. A slice is larger than my big head. LaBianca had to order special boxes for it, and, instead of plates, your slices are served up on small pizza trays. And quality is not compromised
Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer An order of tortellini with a sherry cream sauce doesn’t skimp on portion size or flavor at Labby’s in Port St. Lucie for quantity. It’s authentic Brooklyn style — thin and slightly crispy crust, topped with fresh ingredients. We split it up and took most home — a small pizza box per slice. “I wanted to do something different that nobody does in the area … it’s become a novelty item,” LaBianca said. There’s also a list of specialty pizzas. Lasagna pizza is their best-selling one, and the margherita pizza follows close behind, LaBianca said. LaBianca is passionate about food. He experiments with new dishes each week and adds weekly specials to the menu. LaBianca
said he made a homemade pesto sauce and wants to add a special shrimp or chicken pesto pizza to the menu. Innovation is the name of the game for LaBianca. “I get bored and come up with so many different things, and make people try them. I just love what I do,” he said. Labby’s Pizza and Pasta is at 3961 S.W. Port St. Lucie Blvd., Suite 113, Port Saint Lucie, Florida. They are open 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4 – 9 p.m. Sunday. They can be reached at (772) 3444748.

YANKEES from page B4 the Yankees Lost the Pennant.” It, in turn, is based on the Faust legend about selling one’s soul to the devil in exchange for a dream. In “Damn Yankees,” a middle-aged man, Joe Boyd, sells his soul to the devil, Mr. Applegate, in order to come back as a young ballplayer who can lead his beloved Washington Senators to victory over those Yankees. The hefty price? He will never return to his wife, Meg, and will spend eternity in hell. To ensure that Joe doesn’t change his mind, he brings in one of the great seductresses in musical theater, Lola. She sings one of the best songs written for a woman, “Whatever Lola Wants.” The students at Indian River State College bring Joe and Lola to life Feb. 11-15 at the McAlpin Fine Arts Center. Director David Moberg, head of the performing and visual arts department at IRSC, spoke about the show. “I’ve never done ‘Damn Yankees.’ he said. “It requires a lot of men, but this year, it seemed like a good idea. Sean Birkett is Joe. He did Tevye in ‘Fiddler on the Roof,’ and he’s got a marvelous voice. He’s playing

The hefty price? He will never return to his wife, Meg, and will spend eternity in hell. both the young and the old Joe. He’s lovely to listen to. Jordan St. Germain plays Meg, She’s a first-year musical student with a lovely voice and they have nice chemistry. Lindsey Grace is Lola and she’s super. She’s dynamite, a real little fireball who sings and moves well. Michael Edward Hurst as Applegate is a big guy. The contrast between the tiny Lola and the big Applegate is interesting.” The cast also includes Allison McDermid as Sister, Erin Farley as Doris, Jerron Thomas as Vernon; James King as Van Buren; Chris Harris as Rocky, Jessica Lesko as Gloria, Thomas Lesko as Lynch, Jaime Martinez as Welch, Brennan Monaco as Smokey, Mary Karla Hernandez as Miss Weston, Austin Peer as the Commissioner and Michael Ladewig as the Postmaster. The large cast also has a contingent of ballplayers and a chorus.
Moberg said that as he blocked the show, he came to appreciate it even more. “It struck me as almost a play with music, as opposed to a musical. The characters are more defined, and the songs make sense as part of the character development. As silly as the story is, there’s an edge that is intriguing, a supernatural-ness.” The department’s musical theater season will end on a light-hearted note, with “Nunsense” March 26-29. Students at Indian River State College present “Damn Yankees” Feb. 11-15 at the McAlpin Fine Arts Center, 3209 Virginia Ave., Fort Pierce. Performances are Feb. 11-14 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 14-15 at 2 p.m. Ticks are $15 for non-subscription holders and $10 for subscribers. Call the box office at 1 (800) 220-9915 or visit www.irsc.edu.

TREASURE COAST — Martin Health System is the first health care system in the Treasure Coast and Palm Beach region to pilot a new initiative designed to enhance the recovery process for surgical patients. For the past six months, two Martin Medical Group surgeons, Phillip Moyer, M.D., and Matthew Peebles, M.D., have been using the ERAS, or Enhanced Recovery After Surgery, approach with the goal of improving patient outcomes and safely decreasing hospital stays. This approach is currently in place at Tradition Medical Center in Port St. Lucie, but will eventually be expanded to other Martin Health hospitals. ERAS was pioneered in Denmark and England and has recently been adopted by several major medical centers in the United States, including Duke University. It represents a paradigm shift in perioperative care by considering all areas of the patient’s journey through the surgical process. It has shown to reduce the length of hospital stays by more than 30 percent
and reduce postoperative complications by up to 50 percent. Reported benefits also include reduced exposure to hospital infection and fewer readmissions. The ERAS approach provides guidance to all involved in perioperative care, helping them to work as a well-coordinated team to provide the best care. Moyer and Peebles work in concert with anesthesiologists and hospitalists at Tradition Medical Center to address the key factors that affect patient recovery: pain, gut dysfunction and immobilization. “This is really a comprehensive approach that starts at the time of referral and engages all members of the patient care team,” Moyer said. “We assess the individual needs of patients prior to surgery with the goal of helping them recover and leave the hospital sooner by minimizing stress responses on the body during surgery.” Individual interventions that help reduce stress on the body include allowing for the intake of fluid and nutrition before and after surgery, using minimally inva-

PORT ST. LUCIE — Author of the bestselling book “Frederick Douglass Republicans: The Movement to Re-Ignite America’s Passion for Liberty,” Smith will discuss the No. 1 challenge facing the conservative movement and the Republican Party: diversity inclusion. Smith’s Frederick Douglass Republican message resonates with those who hold liberty in high esteem. It was K. Carl’s FDR message which inspired Louisiana state Senator Elbert Guillory’s party switch to the Republican Party and conservative move-

The results are both dramatic and measurable. “We are improving patient care and influencing outcomes throughout the perioperative period,” said Peebles. “In colon surgeries, we are seeing patients who feel as good in three days as those who used to take one week to recover.” While the ERAS approach is currently used for colon, gallbladder and other elective surgeries, the hope is that it will ultimately be carried over into many different surgical procedures.
